Title: VENEZUELA
Post by: MinistroRaven on February 07, 2018, 09:29:30 AM
The situation in my country has just worsened and it doesn’t seem to be an end for the terrible situation venezuelan citizens are living.

Here’s some news about a camp of Venezuelan refugees in Brazil

From PADF Twitter account:

Today we inaugurate a school and a clinic for Venezuelan #Refugees in Brazil w/ support from @CanadaFP. ~70K have fled #Venezuela in search of better conditions - Join us in helping refugees! https://padf.org/helpmigrants https://twitter.com/PADForg/status/960562948904284162/video/1

It's sad. Here in Argentina we don't have refugee camps but in the last couple of years there's been a lot of people that have come here looking for jobs and opportunities.
And the saddest part is that there doesn't seem to be a clear ending to what's happening, at least in the near future.

Sorry to hear that. Its sad to see the hardships that Venezuela is facing now.

I'm an outsider to the whole situation, but if you wouldn't mind Raven, as someone who is experiencing it firsthand, do you mind if I ask: what was the progression in your opinion that has led to the current situation in Venezuela? Could things have been differently and how so?

There are multiple factors IMO that led the country to its current state.
For me the most important one: “greed” the government of Chavez was born with the spirit of Robin Hood taking the money from the rich and wealth people and giving it to the poor. Surely, many will say that that was something good, but in fact it wasn’t. With that move many if not most investors were scared away because they felt they investments weren’t protected soon all those that didn’t want to invest in the country Chávez started to expropriate buildings, land, businesses etc. and Chavez NEVER paid back for the expropriations and nationalization of all that he took. Not only that, since 2003 up to 2014 there’s an exchange policy controlled by the government, were you can only purchase a certain amount of foreign currency (dollars, euros etc) a year. It started at $5000 USD per person in 2003 and in 2014 you were only allowed to purchase $700 up to $1500 USD from 2014 up to date you can’t get foreign currency legally, you can only access to it by the black market. With all this situation companies like American Airlines and many others from USA and other countries weren’t able to take their revenue back to their countries  and that just scared the few investors left in Venezuela.
The government took the major lands were in other times out people cultivate the food for the country and also for exportation. They took control of the industry that produced milk, coffee, pasta, wheat flour, vegetal oil, etc they took control of the biggest communication company (its best internet speed it’s supposed to be 10MB but they only deliver at 1MB)
Now, why they did all this, because while a typical Venezuelan citizens has to purchase $1 USD in the black market at 232902 Bolivares the government purchase the same dollar for only 10 Bolivares, now as they control the boarders, the customs, the airports, etc they can import whatever they want at a rate that it’s prohibited for the majority of us and they sell the goods at their own discretion.
Right now, they sell a box with food 8 to 10 items and to purchas the box you have to get an ID pro government called CARNET DE LA PATRIA. With said ID you can vote, purchase food and identify yourself as pro government.
All this as a measure of control, if you want to eat, they will tell you how much and what you can eat, but for that, you have to vote for them. You want a house? Good go vote for them, why not lie to them and vote for someone else? The elections in Venezuela are not free anymore they control everything and if they want to they will assist you in the voting so you don’t get confused at the last minute. Most weapons from our army has been given to paramilitary forces so they control the population.
Chavez was born poor in a poor town, and since day one he said he was resented with the wealth ones. That way while he and his more closest people started to get rich and wealthy the whole country started to fall in an abyss and it seems we haven’t reach bottom yet.
What could have been done differently?
Chavez got to the government in 1998 but in 1992 he failed in a coup d' État he was released from jail in 1996, we could have avoided all this by letting hin rot in jail or by killing him when the chance arose in 2002 no Chavez, no socialism, no debacle.
Right now, the options are a military intervention by the US government and the allies of the continent. Sadly many will die, but, right now, many are already dying of starvation or for the lack of medicines, a friend of mine passed last week because he couldn’t find his blood pressure pills.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has been visiting most South America he had conversation with presidents of Chile, Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, and some others, those are our allies as they all agree that something must to be done to put an end to the tragic my people are facing. The group of Lima, EU, OAS, Canada and other countries are applying economic sanctions to Maduro’s government, freezing bank account with millions of US dollars to agents of the government.

And article about the sanctions:

There's another major thing that happened according to what I've read. Venezuela has the biggest oil reserves in the world and when oil was booming a couple of years before chavez started doing all the things mentioned above, since Venezuela was super rich so the government started subsidising everything and that went very well with people. However at some point the price for oil started plummeting and the state realized they didn't have money to pay for all the subsidies they were giving and that's when Chavez started taking private lands and companies, they needed the money to keep everything as it was. This all devolved into the chaos that we see now.

Yes, well, as I said in a previous post the factors that led to where the country is at are many. And the one you mentioned it’s just another one.
Those lands that chavez took from their owners are just there, doing nothing, miles and miles of lands that before Chavez were very productive land are now being wasted and not a single harvest of anything. In my home state, Lara State it was the biggest potato harvester, amd our state always supplied potatos for the whole country, now, as the goverment took the lands and nothing it’s being seed in those lands they are importing potatos why? Because by doing that they take a high a high commission and full their pockets, and many times they let rot those potatos at the containers and the process it’s repeated over and over again, now multiply that with every single item, milk, onions, rice, pasta, wheat flour, coffee and on and on.

——

On a brighter note for all of us that are against the government:

The International Criminal Court's gears grind exasperatingly slowly. But once that clockwork is up and running, it's not easy to stop.

There are:

600,000 Syrians in Germany
550,000 Venezuelans in Colombia (by far the least talked about crisis) Not counting those venezuelan refugees in Peru, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Uruguay, Chile etc

As a Colombian we see the consequences of this in our country everyday. Hundreds of Venezuelans come here in hopes of a better life (Not that they're going to find something completely better here anyway, but it's not worse). We aren't prepared for this as a country (Specially since it used to be the other way around in the 70s-80s: Colombians fleeing to Venezuela) and the government isn't really saying what the immigrant situation is in here publicly.

Just so the rest of the guys ITT can imagine the inflation: Some Venezuelans in Bogota sell wads of Venezuelan Bolívares for the equivalent of 1 or 2 dollars for people who are into Numismatics here. It's baffling and it's not even the tip of the iceberg

Sorry to hear this, man. I was wondering if you know whatever thing happened yesterday in the Caracas blackout. It seems that something important happened and the News are talking about it here but I can't really understand what it was.

Why is Venezuela "on our doorstep?" Areh

Largely agree with everything else. I am anti-socialist in the US for many reasons, but I don't fully support the "See look at this shithole that can happen here!" as a sole argument against it, any more that "See, this works in this other country, it should totally work here!" There are plenty of other more rational arguments to be made against socialism in the US. Which will not be discussed in this non-P/R thread.

Quote
President Maduro and PSUV can count on the support of maybe a third of the population, at best. A vast majority of Venezuelans, those that still live in the country anyway, are against this government within varying degrees of disdain.

There is a third of the population who support this leadership? And the rest are against it WITHIN VARYING DEGREES?
