Title: STRYPER: Michael Sweet said he is 95% suspicious of having cancer.
Post by: MinistroRaven on February 05, 2018, 04:34:49 PM
STRYPER has set "God Damn Evil" as the title of its new album, due on April 20 via Frontiers Music Srl. The disc was recorded at SpiritHouse Recording Studios in Northampton, Massachusetts. The follow-up to 2015's "Fallen" marks STRYPER's first effort since the addition of former FIREHOUSE bassist Perry Richardson. Perry joined the band as the replacement for STRYPER's longtime bassist Tim Gaines, who was fired from the group last year.

"God Damn Evil" track listing:

01. Take It To The Cross
02. Sorry
03. Lost
04. God Damn Evil
05. You Don't Even Know Me
06. The Valley
07. Sea Of Thieves
08. Beautiful
09. Can't Live Without Your Love
10. Own Up
11. The Devil Doesn't Live Here

STRYPER guitarist/vocalist Michael Sweet stated about "God Damn Evil": "I can tell you this: if you kind of take the best of a handful of STRYPER albums and you kind of roll it up into a big, old fat burrito, that's what you're gonna get with this album. On a couple of songs, you're gonna hear qualities of 'Against The Law', you're gonna hear qualities of 'Fallen', you're gonna hear qualities of 'No More Hell To Pay' — and even 'To Hell With The Devil' and 'Soldiers [Under Command]'. You're gonna get the best of all those worlds in one world.

"We have already said this in private, I don't know if we've said it publicly, and people always kind of sneer when they hear bands say this, and I say it for every album —whatever — I really believe it for every album, 'cause I'm one of those guys that strives to improve and get better. But this is STRYPER's best album. And when it comes out and people hear it, in terms of the songs, the performances, the quality, the audio, the sonic quality, the flow, the feel, the energy, people, I think, will agree — most people. There are always those people that live in denial and just say, 'There's nothing as good as 'To Hell With The Devil',' and that's because they're kind of stuck in the '80s. And that's fine — it's totally fine. I love the '80s too. I'm stuck in the '80s in some ways as well, and that's great — there's some great music that came from the '80s. But, at the same time, I really believe, and I think a lot of our fans — I'll go as far as to say maybe even most of our fans believe that we're doing some of the best music and making some of the best albums that we ever have in our career."

Sweet recently told ListenIowa that both the title and the lyrics of the title track of STRYPER's new album would be "shocking" to STRYPER fans — "moreso than with 'To Hell With The Devil'. When people hear it, they're going to go, 'What? Can you tell me that again?'" he said.

Perry did not play bass on STRYPER's new album due to scheduling contraints. The bass tracks on "God Damn Evil" were laid down by John O'Boyle, who played bass on Sweet's last two solo albums.

Michael is a fantastic singer.  He might be an even better guitar player.  And he's a pretty good songwriter.  And I have to say that there are things about their last three albums that surpass even some of the best things they did in the '80s.  But...sometimes I wish Michael just wouldn't talk.  :lolpalm:

That said, of course I'll be buying this.

Sometimes he is very upfront when saying things. I am looking for a chance to interview him, and I have a couple of questions regarding that matter. Let’s see if I can get that chance.
For me the last two albums are way better than anything they did previously, I am confident they will deliver once again with GDE

Sometimes he is very upfront when saying things.

Oh, no doubt.  I have no issue with that.  The problem is that he is often also very clueless when saying things.  :lol  But, hey, I don't buy Stryper albums for Michael's off-script any more than I watch Home Alone 2 to see Donald Trump.  The music is generally very good, and the lyrical themes are excellent (even if the execution of those themes in the lyrics themselves sometimes misses the mark), and that's more than good enough for me.

I am really looking forward for this release

I personally was turned off of Stryper and anything Michael Sweet-related due to certain comments he stated, which I won't get into this thread, but in any case, I liked the last two Stryper albums so I'm sure this one will not disappoint.  Plus, that album cover.  God looks very vengeful in this one.

I've become a fan of the band from the last two albums, mainly No More Hell to Pay so I'm looking  forward to this.  I don't really give a shit what Michael has to say either or his opinions, as long as this is as good as the last two, he's cool in my book.

The artwork, while being similar to the last 2 it’s really good. I love it, and the titlw thougjt provoking, at least for the Christian fans. There are many in FB saying they won’t purchase the album

The last two Stryper albums are my favorite from them, so I think this one will be at least as good :metal

About the press release in the OP, I thought Perry DID play bass on the album. I got that impression from Michael’s tweets and updates. Anyone know more about that?

I'm guess it has to do with the fact that he's pro-Trump.

I'll probably pick this up. Stryper is a band that I fit into my hit or miss catelogue. Meaning I typically love 3-4 songs per album while the rest doesn't do much for me.

Guessing about how he said the NFL players should shut up and do their job as they get paid good money.  That was in relation to them not standing for the anthem or something.

You beat me to it.

I like it, I like it a lot, even the chorus!

Here’s some info Michael gave about the song plus pre order links etc:

Below is your first look into the upcoming album with tonight's release of our epic lyric video for the song, Take It To The Cross!
Take It To The Cross’ is our answer to many fans asking us to do something a little heavier and even bordering on thrash,” says Michael. “The verses are heavy with a vocal and lyric delivery that's bold and relevant yet the chorus kicks in with a fast, thrashy vibe. We brought in Matt Blanchard (Act Of Defiance / Shadows Fall) to handle the vocal growl on the choruses and the end vamp. This song is 100% high octane.”

We are celebrating our 35th anniversary with the upcoming release of our10th studio album, GOD DAMN EVIL, due April 20, 2018 from Frontiers Music srl. Produced by frontman Michael Sweet, the band returns with their most powerful album to date, doubling down on the hard rock/heavy metal sound that earned them a worldwide fan base.

Fans were initially introduced to the "God Damn Evil" album title and cover art via social media posts on February 5th, which quickly went viral causing a significant amount of conversation from STRYPER fans.

“We thought long and hard about this title,” says Michael in response to thousands of fan comments. “It was actually considered quite a few years ago and it just didn't feel like the right time. Now, with all the evil in the world that we see around us on a daily basis, it made perfect sense. It's a very bold statement yet a prayer asking God to damn/condemn evil. Nothing more, nothing less."

God Damn Evil is the first release since the recent addition of bass player Perry Richardson, who joins original members Michael Sweet (vocals and guitar), Robert Sweet (drums) and Oz Fox (guitar). Perry is best known as a founding member of the multi-platinum band FireHouse.

Rocking since 1984, STRYPER is responsible for such classic '80s metal albums as Soldiers Under Command, To Hell with the Devil and In God We Trust. In fact, STRYPER is the first band to ever have two songs in MTV’s Top 10 simultaneously with their hits “Free” and “Honestly.” After a sabbatical for much of the 1990's, STRYPER returned strong in the early 21st century. To date, the Dove Award-winning and GRAMMY-nominated band has sold over 10 million records worldwide.

"God Damn Evil" is the follow-up to STRYPER’s ninth studio album, "Fallen" (Frontiers Music SRL), which was released in 2015 and debuted at the top of the Billboard charts. 2016’s 30th Anniversary To Hell With The Devil Tour saw record crowds and featured the band’s largest sound and lighting production in nearly two decades.

STRYPER will return to the road this year, kicking off the God Damn Evil World Tour in Milan, Italy on April 28th at the Frontiers Rock Festival. Tour dates will be posted as confirmed at https://www.stryper.com/Tour/tour.html.

“We all see and hear the darkness that surrounds us in our society but with faith and love, we'll always have hope,” says Michael. “That's what STRYPER is all about - powerful music and a message that builds foundations, not walls. We couldn't be more excited about God Damn Evil as it showcases our undying love for what we do and why we do it.”

I don't dislike it, but it's just so different from their previous work it takes a while to get used to. It'll probably grow on me after a while.
Anyway, kudos to Stryper for trying something new/different on this album :metal

I don’t think that’ll be a problem, excepting for the screaming vocals at the back, but that’s just a minor thing. If MS has made it through 35 years of Stryper with the same vocal range (or almost), I think it’s fair to say he can handle this.

I'll probably end up accepting this but after one listen it seems pretty silly if I'm going to be honest.  As I said it will be something I'd probably ending getting a kick out of but to me it's like normal Stryper with a chorus that doesn't really fit thrown in there for no real reason and seems to lack any purpose or flow, but maybe I missed something after only one listen.

I don't see this as anything really out there from their sound.  The growls at the end are pretty damn weak too.  I'm liking the heaviness and despite my comment sounds promising.

The riff kinda sounds like The Trees Have Eyes by King Diamond.

I don't think the chorus really fits. Sounds like he just randomly decided to try out his fight era Halford impression. Sure I may end up with it in my head. Though not because I liked it but because it caught me off guard and made me laugh.

The chorus doesn't fit, that's my main issue.  It's just pretty cheesy and goofy because they are trying to be heavy and evil.  The riff definitely very similar to The Trees Have Eyes by KD, good pickup.  It's obviously got a heavy Sabbath Children of the Grave vibe too.

Is the chorus a joke? When you go for a Halford-like chorus, at least you have to have the voice suited for it. There, MS sounds like a kid on helium. And this comes for someone who has always admired MS's voice and singing. Well, I guess Stryper is not for me anymore.

Yeah, I think just how disjointed it seems put me off.  It still seems a bit thrown together and the chorus just doesn't seem to fit with everything else but yeah, I'm kind of liking the heavier approach.  I actually hope it continues throughout the whole album.

I'm...not sure whether I am looking forward to it or not.  It depends on the type of "heavy" and how it is executed.  I didn't care for the type of "heavy" on the first song.  It doesn't suit them and sounded silly to me.  But we'll see.

if you guys don’t like the first song you have 10 others with the characteristic Stryper sound.

Are you saying the new song is a bit of a false representation of the album?

I don't really care too much about that.  I just want to know if it is the only song that sounds awful.

That's a bit of a shame, although the growls on that song are laughable, if they were going to do something like this, I kind of wished they went a bit further with it.

Sweet IMO needs to alter what keys and such he writes in.  The register he's singing in these days can come across monotone and screechy.

I thought the last three releases going back to Murder By Pride (not including the covers album) all had well-written vocal melodies that really let Michael shine.  But I'm not caring for what I am hearing from him thus far on this one.

I thought that too don't get me wrong.  I think I started that with his last solo album I believe, and am hearing the same here.

I haven't heard any of his recent solo stuff.  But I know the stuff I heard in the '90s didn't do it for me.  It was just sung too clean.  I have always admired his range, but there is something about the timbre of his voice that could be very hit and miss for me, and the solo work highlighted the things that definitely fell into the "miss" category.  The last three albums, even though he still sang high in his range and had a lot of soaring parts, there was just enough grit that I thought most of it sounded really good.

You know, listening to some live songs, and the new track, Sorry (I was searching some live videos for a response to something in another thread, and YouTube kept playing Stryper, so I rolled with it for awhile), I have to say that these guys are easily now one of my present favorites from the '80s scene.

Their studio output in the last decade has been a bit hit and miss.  But there have been at least a few really solid songs on every release.  And from seeing them a few years back and seeing a lot of YouTube clips (and their most recent live album), they continue to put on a really solid live show.  I just have to express appreciation for this band.

Not a fan and don't really have much to comment on, but I saw that Walmart and the dominant Christian retailer are both refusing to carry the album because of the title. That's a damn shame. Partly because it completely misses the point, but mostly because I think it's a great title. I thought that as soon as I saw it in this thread. It can be seen both as a prayer request, as a lamentation, and as a description of the current state of things.

Also, while I like the cover, I'm pretty sure that's Poseidon.

I mean if the title was named "God Damned Evil" would it be a little more "tasteful" in the Christian markets?

I don't personally take issue with the title. However, I do see why some are upset, and it is blatantly obvious Stryper were looking to stir the pot.

Michael claims the title is asking God to damn evil. However, structurally, if they really meant that, the title would read:

God, Damn Evil

>>>They know that. But the took out the comma anyway, KNOWING it would cause a firestorm, and attract attention. It's all a bit...juvenile, honestly.

Again, I don't have a problem with the title myself. But lets call it what it is - Stryper knowingly doing something to blatantly stir the pot and get more people talking about them. And you know what? It worked. Their sales aren't going to suffer because of Walmart and the Christian outlets refusing to sell it. All people have to do is order it on Amazon, and everyone knows that. And oh, by the way, Michael has gushed about just how high up the pre-sale chart the new record is.

Anyone else order on Amazon, and get the "sorry, it is delayed and won't arrive 'til Wednesday" email?

May have to cancel and go pick up at my local place. I prefer that anyway (generally), but had other plans today, which was why I did Amazon. And yes, I have Prime -- still delayed.

I'm about halfway through this album, and I am noticing a pattern:  Most of the songs, at least on the first half of the album, feature heavy, aggressive verses and bridges, and switch to more soaring, melodic choruses.  (Sorry, God Damn Evil, The Valley)  Two things to say about that:  (1) This is really what Styper does well, and IMO, they are often at or near their best when they follow this pattern.  (2) I'm a sucker for this general format.  So, suffice to say that this album is shaping up to be a winner so far, at least after one (partial) listen.

Take It To the Cross remains the one track I don't like thus far.  Maybe I'll eventually warm up to it.  But even if I don't, there is plenty to like elsewhere on the album.

But I'll see what I think after another listen.

IMO, all Tim had to say was: "My love, prayers, and best wishes to Oz, Annie, and their family. Wish him a speedy recovery, and I'm here if he needs an ear."

That would have been classy, and a way to chime in. But instead, Tim makes a point sling mud, when this isn't the time for it. Sad.

UPDATE:

Oz update!

This just happened: Nuerosurgon came in & talked to Oz about his medical history. Nothing shocking to indicate his current situation.

The tumor by the ear is not as much concern as the one by the back of the right brain. They are both inoperable. In other words, she recommends not removing them.

So Oz was given two choices:

1. Operate/do biopsy on the tumor in the back. There will be risk involved, but at least we will have answers to what this mass is. (About an inch)
2. Wait 6 more weeks and see if a new MRI shows growth, or that it stays the same.

Oz wants his quality of life back, and wants to find out what it is. So he has decided to go for option number 1.

Now here is where we need serious, strategic prayer. Please pray for this mass to NOT be cancerous, and that he will recover quickly!
Pray for the doctors hands to be steady & her mind to be sharp with wisdom & Percision skill.

We don’t want to be in fear...we believe that God has a plan for this even though this is a serious & life altering trial!

Please continue to lift us up in prayer! The doctors best guess for cost of surgery is more than we will be expecting—she couldn’t give us a figure.

We love you & thank you for all of your support!

STRYPER Guitarist Oz Fox to Resume Touring After Medical Scare
Guitarist Oz Fox intends to return to the road for most of the dates this fall, after suffering an on-stage medical emergency in August. Oz remains under doctor’s care, and additional testing and treatment will be necessary. However, he should be released to work this fall while his medical team decides the best course of action moving forward.

Tuesday, September 4, 2018 — After heavy touring for the first part of 2018, STRYPER will return to the road this fall for the second half of their God Damn Evil World Tour. And there is good news for STRYPER fans… guitarist Oz Fox intends to return to the road for most of the dates this fall.

This has been a challenging summer for Oz and his bandmates. On August 11th, Oz suffered a medical emergency while performing with a side project in Las Vegas. An on-stage seizure led to the discovery of some previously unknown “spots” on the brain. Oz has been released from the hospital, although additional testing and treatment will be necessary. However, he should be released to work this fall while his medical team decides the best course of action moving forward. You can view STRYPER's original statement here: https://prez.ly/IwM.

Oz was forced to sit out the Australia tour dates earlier this month, and he’ll miss the September dates as well due to air travel restrictions from his doctor. However he intends to rejoin STRYPER on the road in October. Oz handpicked Los Angeles-based guitarist Howie Simon to fill in for him on the September dates, allowing Oz additional time to rest and recover. Simon will be a familiar face to many STRYPER fans with performance credits that include Nelson, Jeff Scott Soto Band, Scrap Metal, Talisman, Eric Martin Band, Winger and more.

"Howie Simon and I have been friends for well over a decade now,” says Oz. "It is great to have him help us out and fill in for me while I am in recovery. I am looking forward to catching some fan videos of him online. He's an excellent performer and his guitar playing outranks so many in the business. In my opinion, it is very important for the band to fulfill dates that have been booked for so long. I am thankful for the continued support of the fans while my STRYPER family and I face this detour in my career, and I look forward to seeing many of you on the road in October and November."

"We appreciate all the support, thoughts and prayers from everyone at this time,” says frontman Michael Sweet. "We look forward to having our brother Oz back as quickly as possible. We're also very grateful to Howie for working so hard learning the material and parts to be able to sit in with us for the time being. We'll do our best to bring you the absolute best show possible until Oz returns.”

STRYPER continues to dominate the hard rock/heavy metal scene with the their critically-acclaimed tenth studio album, God Damn Evil - released in April via Frontiers Music srl.

Saw the show this weekend. What a great gig. 20 songs, they were on at 8:50, and off at 10:35, so 1 hour, 45 minutes, total. It was really nice to see Oz Fox back with them. He looked healthy, and a little thinner, which is to be expected (and probably for the best). His daughter was next to me, and she was rocking out, and Oz pointed at her a few times, and they mentioned their family in the crowd. Perry Richardson sings great in replacing Tim Gaines. Stryper doesn't miss a beat. The band played great overall, and Michael Sweet had a good night vocally. He took a bit to get warm, but once he did, he hit some good stuff. After a bad Sunday for me, it was nice to hear some metal with a message of positivity to close out the weekend.

They played four songs from their latest album, God Damn Evil, seven from To Hell With the Devil, and a smattering of others, including two from Against the Law, which was a nice surprise (All for One, and Lady). The highlights for me personally were "The Valley," "Revelation," "Surrender," and a couple tunes from In God We Trust, which was my first Stryper record, and still my favorite. Unfortunately, the band just hates the slick production on it, and doesn't really perform much from it, so it was nice to get two songs (the title track and Always There for You). Maybe one day they'll do Writing on the Wall, which would make my year.  :lol

I know they play Seattle tomorrow, and a few other dates before they wrap up in mid-November. But if they are coming near, its worth going to see. Really good show.

I have always dismissed this band based on two things - the Christianity thing and Michael Sweet's voice.  There's just something about it (maybe his tone?) that sounded a little goofy to me over the years and it's hard to explain.  As for the religious thing, I have no problem with Satan in my metal, but I just never really wanted anything too preachy on the other end.

But earlier this week I looked at my 1,500 album+ collection and honestly could not think of one record that I truly wanted to listen to.  So it was time to look for something different.  I saw Samsara's review above and decided to give them a shot.  Between social media groups and election season, it feels like we're surrounded by constant negativity, so something with a positive message seemed like a nice change of pace.

So far, I've heard the first two records (Soldiers Under Command, To Hell with the Devil) and the last three (Fallen, No More Hell to Pay, God Damn Evil).

The older records sound and come off as really dated and a touch too glammy (and that chorus to Makes Me Want to Sing that just goes "JEEEEEEEEEESUSSSSS" is so lame.  I love hair bands, but I've pretty much moved on from wanting to hear that style, aside from one or two bands that don't come off as dated.

The last 3 albums are awesome, with heavier riffs, more modern production and great, catchy songs.  The heavier style really suits them and gives the music a nice crunch while showing off their musicianship.  So call me a new fan.  I still don't really need the overly preachy stuff, but I can look past it just as easily as I the very anti-religious/Satanic lyrics of other bands that I like.

Grapp,

Glad you're on board. I just take it as a message of positivity. They are really dynamite with the vocal harmonies and the guitar playing is really incredible.

Grapp, I agree with you on the sound of the latest albums.  And while the writing may not be quite as good as some of the true classics, the production and the slight edginess that Michael has gained in his voice more than make up for it to me.  And it's funny in a way.  It's not like his voice is very noticably grittier or edgier.  But it is enough to push the vocals over the line from cheesy to credible, at least for me.

Yeah.  I'm starting to loosen up on the lyrics a bit as I listen to the band more.  The re-recorded album (Second Coming) is awesome because it takes those older songs and puts the heavier style and production on them, so it's much more beefed up and less glammy.

I enjoy Second Coming quite a bit myself. As you dig deeper, you'll find out that they want to re-record In God We Trust, and some other things they want to do. They have a lot of projects on the plate.

I like that Michael always wants to be busy working on new music and looking for things to make the fans happy and satisfied. I agree that the last 3 albums are the best. The sound, production and writing are spot on :metal

As for the lyrics, I don’t have a problem with them, as I’m a christian

Iconic Rock Band STRYPER Announces 2019 HISTORY Tour
Tuesday, March 19, 2019 — Chart-topping rock band STRYPER will return to the road in May for the 2019 HISTORY Tour — Greatest Hits & Covers that influenced our generation. The all-new HISTORY Tour comes on the heels of the band’s yearlong God Damn Evil World Tour, which concluded in Japan in February.

“The music of our generation was and is timeless,” says STRYPER frontman Michael Sweet. "It was all about the song and musicians who inspired you to want to play. We grew up on bands like Van Halen, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Journey and BOSTON. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn't for the music of these legendary bands. We thought it would be an amazing experience to play some of these songs live and show you, the audience, exactly were our roots lie. We’ll also be incorporating our own hits & videos from 1984 to 2019, and something from Perry’s past as well (Firehouse). We’re excited to get back out on the road and we look forward to seeing you soon!”

STRYPER consists of original members Michael Sweet (vocals and guitar), Robert Sweet (drums) and Oz Fox (guitar), as well as bassist Perry Richardson (formerly of the multi-platinum band Firehouse) who joined the group in 2018.
Exclusive meet & greet packages will be available in most cities. Fans will have the option of purchasing either a Standard Meet & Greet Package or VIP HISTORY Tour Meet & Greet Package. Both meet & greet packages include an opportunity to meet the band, get autographs, take photos with the guys and receive exclusive one-of-a-kind merchandise. However, the VIP HISTORY Meet & Greet Package (limited to 6 fans per city) offers additional merchandise options and a stage tour (hold Michael's guitar, photo in front of Robert's drum kit, overview of gear with STRYPER crew member).

STRYPER continues to dominate the hard rock/heavy metal scene with the their critically-acclaimed tenth studio album, God Damn Evil - released in 2018 via Frontiers Music srl. Rocking since 1984, STRYPER is responsible for such classic '80s metal albums as Soldiers Under Command, To Hell with the Devil and In God We Trust. In fact, STRYPER is the first band to ever have two songs in MTV’s Top 10 simultaneously with their hits “Free” and “Honestly.” To date, the Dove Award-winning and GRAMMY-nominated band has sold over 10 million records worldwide.

God Damn Evil is available now wherever you can buy or stream music: http://radi.al/GodDamnEvil

They were just here late last year. Great show. Seems like they pass through annually. And so does Michael Sweet as a solo act. He's got an upcoming show in our area.

I struggle with Michael Sweet’s voice these days, and everything sounds the same. It tires my ears. Like Tim, I should enjoy it more than I do because it seems quality. There’s just something stopping me loving it. It’s not the lyrics because I couldn’t care less whether they’re singing about their god, Satan or the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

I loved their older albums.

I actually thought their best written, most diverse album was Against The Law.  The new song sounds fine but nothing I felt like playing again.

There's something about his voice that also just doesn't connect with me.  I think it's just the sound and tone of it.  I love him on some songs and not on others.

The music on the new song is killer.  But the lyrics are so cringey -   "he's a holy human sacrifice, nailed upon the cross"

I think I'd accept this band more if the lyrics weren't so obvious and narrative like this.  You can talk about faith and how it impacts your life - weave that faith into human experiences.  Stretch your creativity a little instead of having a number of songs on every album that come off saying "I love Jesus" in this way or that way.

Theocracy seems to be able to do it, especially on a song like Easter.

The thing about Stryper is that they're...well..solid. I can't criticize them because I do think they're excellent, but they really leave me wanting more.

Against the Law has a great somewhat fresh feel and is something a little different, very enjoyable album.  My first was No Hell to Pay and I think that will always remain my favourite.

I completely understand the criticism about the band though.  Those that are iffy on them though, check out the live DVD from the No More Hell to Pay tour.  Can't even recall the name but I think it's Live at the Whisky?  Enjoyable release.

First listen. It’s solid. Nothing jumped out and grabbed me. Liked the guitar work and seemed to be aiming for their 80s sound.

I listened to it once, and have it on a second time as I type this. I like it. Solid. It feels a bit heavier for sure. And I agree that they are aiming for their 80s sound, without obviously updated production. I do like the fact Michael is picking places for high notes, but making sure most of the vocals are in a comfortable range for him. he's been doing that, and I prefer it.

I'll give Stryper this: they've been incredibly consistent since No More Hell to Pay in 2013. I've really enjoyed their work, and have seen them two or three times in that span of seven years based on the strength of those new records.

I loved the old school vibe of the Accept. I'm not complaining about modern day Accept, but there's a bit of lack of variety. Classic Accept had tons of variety on those albums. The Undertaker was a nice change of pace, and it isn't at all what I expected.

Okay, the Stryper was better on the second listen.  I just don't know what makes this 'heavy as fuck' compared to other Stryper.  The solo section was pretty balls out though.  Sweet can come up with a great solo.

I have a few Stryper albums, but I never listen to them. Just seems like everytime I check out a new song, it just seems to let me down.

My first thought when hearing Divider was Holy Shit this is heavy! Not really comparing it with anything else. It was just the feeling I got.

And the other thing about the Accept was that it was not what I expected. I actually found it a bit refreshing because , well, I don't want to call the Tornillo Era samey, but there's just not a lot of dynamics throughout the albums.

Posted my thoughts in the hard rock thread, but I can see what you are saying with the last few being samey.  I reckon Sneap is partly responsible for that though.

Personally, I've been diggin' this latest Stryper record. "Divider" and "Blood From Above" are my favorites, but it's a really good album. Obviously Michael Sweet has zeroed in on what fans want, and he takes a track or two to experiment with, and the rest are sort of dialed in for the Stryper audience.

I like how he got a bit heavier again for sure. Damn solid stuff. Love the solos too. I assume Oz played his solo parts. I hear a difference in the guitars. Given how sick he is, I fear this might be the last Stryper record with Oz Fox. I hope not. The last update was that the tumors were growing again and they would go back into the doctor around the holidays to see what's what and next steps.

Anyway, thumbs up, at least from me, for Even the Devil Believes.

Diggin "Rise to the Call." Nice Priest vibe with the riff. Love how the tune ratchets up at the end. Great note by Michael Sweet.

About them tuning down live - I don't blame them. When I saw them do the To Hell With the Devil anniversary tour, they did everything in the original key. The set of modern songs and other tunes was great. But once they played THWTD, Michael struggled. It was a bit of a bummer.

That said - I saw some footage, I think from Puerto Rico a week ago, where it sounded like they were tuned down, and the songs lost a lot of their dynamics and punch. Personally, I like the stuff from the 80s going down a half-step, but for some songs, it doesn't work well at all (A lot of Tesla's stuff sounds bad tuned down). Back when Tate was in Queensryche and they were down a half-step, it actually sounded a little better. It really depends on the band. I'm hoping Stryper takes a hard look at things, and keeps old songs where it works well, and just cuts songs (even if classics) where it doesn't.

Stryper's music over the last 15 years has been killer. Personally, at this point, other than a handful of old tunes, I'd love to hear them just do modern material.

Michael made a post a couple of weeks ago about him down tuning:

Quote
I was always proud of the fact that we were one of the
few bands that didn't tune down from our original tuning.
We've always tuned to E flat (VH tuning) and did up until
now.
The last few years I've noticed that it's been - little
tougher hitting the high notes. And to sing a 21 song set
(for all of us) was getting a little harder as well.
So, I reached out to @kipwinger and @snareco1 and
asked them what they tuned to these days and they both
texted back "D". I told Kip I felt like a cop out tuning down
a half a step and he said "screw that, you'll gain 10 years
on your singing career"
So, we finally dropped down a half step (D) and I have
found that it's not only much easier to hit the "high"
notes but it's just much easier to sing these songs.
We did an 18 show run and I made it through without any
vocal issues. I was able to retain my range and high end
and sing much more consistently night after night.
I'm a different singer these days (l'Il be 59 in July) but I'm
very thankful that I still get to do what I love to do - play
and sing!
I hope you all enjoyed the tour and I look forward to next time

The thing is, most of Winger's songs down a half-step still sound good. Queensryche (before La Torre) downtuned a half-step as well and the songs were still dynamic and good. Tesla on the other hand...some work, some don't. From the Puerto Rico show for Stryper...eh...what I heard didn't quite do it for me. Don't get me wrong, as I said above, I love the new music Stryper are doing. I just hope when it comes to the old material, they take an objective look at the classics, and just stop performing some of them if it sounds too muddy. Because some of it...does.

But the last several records from Stryper have been incredible. Glad they are still going. Just wish they'd ditch a bunch of the old stuff and play the new material.

The new tunes are sounding good.  Regarding tuning down, I get it.  I used to hate the idea.  But as the bands I have followed for a long time get older, I have come to realize that it is a necessity for a lot of them.  If guys like Michael Sweet and Dave Meniketti that have taken exceptional care of their voices feel they need to do it to sound good through an entire set of material, so be it.

I guess you know it already, but in case you don't, Michael suffered a problem on his retina, and had to go through 3 different procedures to correct the problem.

Oh shit, no I didn't know that.  If I did, I wouldn't have asked and laughed about it.

Haha.  I did for a brief moment thought there must have been something behind it, but thought maybe it's a pirate themed album.  :lol  As someone who has worn glasses/contacts since grade 5, yeah, no laughing matter.  Hopefully he fully recovers.

Apparently he is doing better, the latest procedure they removed some oil from the retina, or at least that’s what I understood.

I am sooooo into this album, it's pure bliss to my ears, not a single weak track.
Michael delivers on each and every song, the melodies are so diverse, the riffs are nuts.
man! I think I have my AOTY

Well, this is the beauty of music. I'm just about finished with my first listen to the record and frankly, I'm kind of bored.

Michael Sweet shines vocally and the guitar work is amazing. Musically, it's all there. But the songs are kind of flat and boring. They aren't BAD, per se. But there isn't a lot of excitement in the songs themselves. The spots where Michael shoots off some cool high notes to emphasize are great, the solos are great. But the songs...I'm wondering if they should have taken a little more time. So much going on with that band, with Oz's medical condition and Michael's scary situation with his eye. I know it was for this reason, Michael wanted to push through and get things recorded. But I also feel the material isn't as strong as previous releases, and maybe it would have been better to have demoed most of these, and then looked to write another batch once Michael recovered and Oz was in more solid shape (I don't know where Oz is these days, other than knowing he's had tumors taken out).

I'm not trying to rain on the parade - I'm a big fan of Stryper. But the highlights for me are the vocal embellishments and the solos, not the songs themselves.

Oz is fully recovered he's been touring with the band and doing great.

I love it even more with each listen, man, my only complain is not getting the Japanese import version to listen to Near in acoustic version.

Oz is not fully recovered. He's good enough while he continues to fight things. IIRC, they took out the tumors that were the biggest. But the one that is wrapped around what controls his fine motor function were just treated to make them smaller...and thus give him the ability to tour. But Oz is not "recovered."

Glad you are enjoying the album though. Obviously, music is like that. What one person finds amazing, another may not find as good. That's the case here.

this was another album I was excited to check out,  Its ok , it has the Stryper signature sound for sure, and I saw them early on, I think it was 1986, and always loved their first releases , I think this is sort of album for me that I will like a few tracks a lot but have a hard time with a whole album of it at a time.  kudos to them for being consistent and still sounding good 30 plus years later

Sounds like the album is a grower but after one listen, I feel the intro song is amazing but then it falls off a cliff from the second song into a sea of mediocrity.  Some wonderful solo sections but I wish they could keep the energy and heaviness of the first track throughout.

I did think that when typing but at least some of the others had a few more peaks as it went along.  This was flat from song 2 to the end.

Michael Sweet shared an update of the upcoming projects (personal and band) a couple of days ago:

Quote
1 - I start on the new @iconicofficialmusic album this week. Tommy, Joel, Nathan, Marco and myself are really excited! Coming 2024.

2 - The new band that me & @alessandro.del.vecchio started is called “SoleDriver”. The album is complete and we’re shooting two music videos at the end of August. The album will be released this year. It’s an amazing album that Ale and myself are very proud of🙏 I can’t wait for you all to hear it!

3 - The new @stryper acoustic album is coming! It’s complete and we’re finally ready to release it!

4 - My inspirational album is finally going to be released worldwide. Stay tuned as I’m certain you will love this album! It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and finally it has become reality. Stay tuned👊

5 - I start recording vocals for the 2nd @sun_bomb album in October. It will be released next year as well. I’ve heard all the music and @traciiguns did a killer job!! Wait till you hear it🙌

6 - The music is complete on another project that was started a few years back with CJ Grimmark oh @narniatheband - once I can schedule writing lyrics and tracking vocals, that album/project will become reality as well. Absolutely stellar👊

7 - Stryper will be recording a new album early next year. I’ll begin writing the music for that album in November/December of this year.

I’m thankful to be able to do what I do passionately love. Music!

Thank you all for your constant support and for helping me accomplish it all🙏🙏

Michael Sweet has shared the following

Quote
Hello my friends,

I wanted to give you all an update on my eyes and my thyroid.

First, my eyes are actually doing fairly well right now. My right eye is still attached (after 2 detachments and 4 surgeries) and although there is still some retinal swelling, I’m very thankful that I did not lose my vision in that eye.

They will continue to observe both eyes (my left eye has two tears and lots of floaters) and I do feel that I have been blessed to be able to retain vision at this point🙏

Regarding my thyroid nodules, unfortunately my left side was biopsied and came back 95% suspicious of cancer. Because I’m a singer, my local doctor recommend that I see a specialist since the risk of vocal nerve damage is at a higher risk during a thyroidectomy.

I met with a specialist in Boston who basically wrote the book on this type of procedure and is able to monitor the vocal nerve to lower the risk of nerve damage. It appears to be a slow growing cancer and at this point, he is recommending removing the left side of my thyroid. Although the right side has a nodule as well, it is however a little smaller in size and they will continue to monitor that. Removing only one side of my thyroid will allow for me to most likely not have to take any type of thyroid hormone medication, and I should be able to get back to a regular quality of life relatively quickly.

Praying for him.

I'll admit, I took that title completely the wrong way. I thought it had something to do with him 95% not believing cancer was real. Makes more sense after reading the post.
