Title: The Terror- AMC Series
Post by: lonestar on January 24, 2018, 12:24:59 AM
Just stumbled across this one, if they do the novel any justice, it should be fantastic.

A real expedition novelized by Dan Simmons, tells the tale of the HMS Terror trying to find the northwest passage, coming to AMC in March...

It's a brutal story, I swear to god I was freezing for the last few hundred pages. Literally freezing. If they can convey that aspect of the story, this thing is gonna be fucked up in the most awesome of ways.

Well...judging from the trailer they may have nailed it because the trailer alone is 'chilling'.....pun intended.

Not quite chilling, but literally cold. The way Simmons portrays the far north, he does it so well that you feel it through and through.

My brother is going to dvr the show, and I'll be checking it out next sunday. I'm unplugged and only have netflix at this point.

I've been looking forward to seeing this show since I heard about it. I was a big fan of the show Rome that was on HBO in the mid 2000's, and two of the actors that were in that appear to be playing major roles in this show as well. Ironically, one of them played Brutus, and the other played Caesar. They were both in GoT as well.

I watched the first half of the episode very early this morning while I was rocking the baby back to sleep and was sufficiently creeped out.  I'm looking forward to seeing what the series has to offer - and having two Game of Thrones actors plus Jared Harris from Mad Men is a huge plus.

I just found out about the series and was about to create a topic about it when I saw this one. I watched the first episode and I am hooked. Anything related to expedition to Antartica and involving mystery, thriller, supernatural immediately reminds me of H.P. Lovecraft writings (like At the Mountains of Madness). I will definitely read the book too.

I hope Cthulhu bid us welcome.  ;D

I've enjoyed the first two episodes immensely. Outside of the great acting thus far....I just really enjoy a show that sinks the right amount of $$ into the production so it feels authentic. This show has that authentic feel....much like VIKINGS....and if you ask me, that's why 'Knightfall' on History Channel was a miss. It felt 'cheap'.

Anyway....looking forward to where this show takes us.

2 episodes in and I'm hooked.  I just wish I had read the book first.

I love Tobias Menzies.  The whole cast is excellent, really.  Looking forward to more.

Third episode cranked it up a notch! Can’t say enough about this acting either.

Watched the first two episodes yesterday, holy crap did they nail the vibe of this one. Very excited to dig into this further.

Oooh this is getting good.  Finally watched episode 3.  I am a little bit bummed that we lost a character that assumed would be on the show much longer.  I don't want to give away spoilers but man, that was brutal.

So did the father - the Eskimo man who died - spiritually inhabit the monster?

So did the father - the Eskimo man who died - spiritually inhabit the monster?

I took it as he was some sort of tribal shaman or spiritual leader?? And that he was training his daughter to take over one day??

And that maybe the ‘monster’ is just honoring them?

Does knowing the answers from the book count as spoilers?

Yes - GTFO!  LoL.  j/k  (but please don't spoil it)   :lol

To gmillerdrake, that is an interesting take I had not considered.  Here is where I think that theory might break down a little.  There was some discussion around the way the remains of the Eskimo man were handled.  (BTW, I do think your observation that he was a shaman or spiritual leader is spot on.)  Didn't the doctor observe that it was being done outside of tradition?  Of course, while he was voicing his concerns, the body was sent down the hole into the ocean.

I'll have to go back and watch it again, but something to the notion that his soul will not leave the earth if his remains are not properly put to rest.  That is why I wondered if his spirit joined the monster and then why the monster visited the daughter and she was not only not harmed, but was given a seal for food.  His soul is now harnessing the monster to be used in revenge and to protect his daughter.

I realize I could totally have this wrong and probably do!

Harmony.... I can totally get on board with that theory. It would be in line with what we’ve seen.

I too was bummed about the departure of that character at such an early stage....BUT....it reallly cranked the story into overdrive!

Thanks and yes it did!

So I'm going to go ahead and ask a dumb question because it has been niggling at me.  I know nothing about this time in history or naval expeditions.  Where the hell is the heat source on those ships?  I see fires outside of the ship on the ice.  But I don't think I've seen anything while the boat was at sail - or since they've been stranded - about how they are keeping warm in there.  Obviously the cook uses fire for cooking in the galley.  But otherwise, I can't figure it out.

Also when I see the actors walking around outside with zero covering on their faces I'm thinking about how quickly one can develop frostbite.  Then I remind myself this is a show and I need to stop nitpicking but I can't help it!   :chill   :D

I would never spoil it, plus I'm sure the series will diverge from the book as they usually do. For me the important thing is to stick to the essence of the book, which they are getting perfect.

I really liked the first four episodes but the fifth was sort of a letdown for me. Also, I think people walking round without face protection in that sort of climate is unrealistic. It's true 'real winter' hasn't set in yet, but they should be way colder then that.

Really digging this show. The creepy vibe and tone of it....the acting is top notch and I like how they incorporate the flashbacks and current time back in England into the story.

No spoilers!  I don't watch it until the weekend!!   :-*

Last week's episode was pretty good.  I felt the flogging scene was a bit salacious.  But without having read the book, maybe it wasn't.  I don't know.

Sort of dredded watching the last two episodes, but it was good. I can live with that ending.

Watched episode 6 last night.  Wow.  I'm even more of a fan of Tobias Menzies.  So happy he will be playing Prince Phillip in the next 2 seasons of The Crown.

My other observation last night was having a feeling watching the isolation and madness stirring in the men inside of a wintery landscape and realizing I'd had that same feeling when watching The Shining so many years ago.

The tension is almost unbearable to watch at times.  So well done.

Finally finished this last night. I liked the ending and the Hickey twist was cool. I thought the show was pretty good overall. I had a hard time following some of the characters so I may watch it again one day. Anyone read the book? Worth reading?

Well, Whaddayaknow? Season 2 Confirmed!

How the heck is that gonna work? Is it based off of more history or are they going to continue with educated speculation?

What an amazing show. As everyone has said the vibe and setting of the show are outright phenomenal. The series is supposed to be an anthology series so season one is just a one season arc. There is apparently a ton of accurate historical backstory on several if not all the characters in the show. The ships, boats, clothes, accents and many accounts are all interwoven into the story.

This show is a very welcome pace from all the other ones I was watching and I'm really amazed with the amazing acting, the dialogue and overall bleakness of the entire journey. I haven't read the book that it's based on but might pick it up. I love the mix of mysticism and dread plus hopelessness depicted on the show. While the demon/creature was more hearsay I imagine in real life, I like how they made it more unassuming on the show.
What a wonderful ride of a show, finished it in days.

I'm reading up on all that is known about the two ships now and was glad to learn that they found the real shipwrecks while the show production was going on.

Season 2 is apparently to be based on the Japanese Internment camps. I don't know how that will pan out going by AMC's history but will wait and see if they do it justice.
I might actually give it a second watch.
Also wanted to add the actress that played Lady Silence I thought was fantastic. Her emotions were so fitting and well portrayed.

This is really cool. As you probably know, the Canadian government have found the wreck.
Divers have explored and filmed it, and here it is for your viewing pleasure.
