Rules
- There will be five rounds.
- No limit on the number of participants. Everyone can join!
- No preliminary rounds. If you join, you're in for all five rounds.
- All submissions must be from albums, EPs, or singles released in 2017. No exceptions.
- In the event of a tie for first place after round 5, an additional round involving only those players will commence in order to determine a winner.
- The length limit for all rounds is 10 minutes. Each participant also has the option of sending one song exceeding this, with a length limit of 15 minutes.
- If at any point you are unable to send a song from 2017, you will be eliminated from the remainder of the roulette.
Rather than points, players will be awarded various stars based on their performance. I will rank all of the songs I receive in a round, and the stars will be awarded based on where your song ranks. The stars are, in order of most valuable to least valuable: Diamond ((https://i.imgur.com/1kwOtAM.png)), Gold ((https://i.imgur.com/KUyp8Oq.png)), Silver ((https://i.imgur.com/x9c3FDJ.png)), Bronze ((https://i.imgur.com/CglH4lS.png)), and Pink ((https://i.imgur.com/vqCNLDJ.png)). There will be a specific number of each star handed out per round, which will be outlined once I know how many participants there will be.
2017?
All of your submissions in this roulette must be from 2017 releases. There are some additional clarifications:
- Submissions from live releases are only allowed if the original studio version of the song in question was also released in 2017.
- New songs added to compilations will only be accepted if the song was not released in any form previously and is not some obscure track from the artist's past.
- Remixes or remasters of older albums that were released in 2017 are not eligible.
- Songs released as promotional material in late 2016 for an album that was subsequently released in 2017 are allowed.
Submitting
- My preference is to receive submissions as Spotify links via PM. I prefer the URI links over URL links, but either is fine.
- If the song you would like to send is not on Spotify, or you can't or won't use Spotify, I would like you to submit a file using MEGA (https://mega.nz/) or via email (address provided at request). Any format is fine.
- If a song isn't on Spotify and you don't have a file for it, you can PM links to me where I can stream the song for free. This includes but is not limited to: Youtube, Bandcamp, Soundcloud, etc.
- Any artist sent to me during the roulette is automatically banned for the remainder, regardless of my thoughts on the song I received. The banned artist list has a list of artists banned during the roulette at the bottom.
- I will accept up to 3 submissions from the same artist/album in a round, but never the same song. If I get the same song more than once, you will be asked to send a different song from that album or a song from a different artist.
-
Here is a list of 2017 releases that I have already listened to. I tried to keep this list accurate by adding to it throughout the year, but I probably forgot to add a few things. Don't be surprised if I reject something not on this list. :p
There may also be albums from artists I am aware of and own previous releases from, but don't keep up with and therefore I didn't know they put anything new out last year. I may or may not reject these submissions, depending upon how familiar I am with the artist's back catalogue.
It was also requested that I indicate my favourite releases from throughout the year, which I have done by putting a gold star next to them.
Finally, there is a Google Sheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13HoWH79GON5y7B_iGiaNv39dvxS-_w-oV9UKGHagSlQ/edit?usp=sharing) version of this list, in the event that some may find that more convenient.

edit: conveniently none of my top 4 albums of the year are on your list so i'm totally set i sent all my songs for the entire roulette
hopefully i don't have to resend? :lol

Fair enough, I knew this theme wouldn't be for everyone.

Depends on whether someone sends any of these in earlier rounds I guess. Also whether other people are likely to send the same artists, with me only accepting three songs max from each in a round on a first come first serve basis, I don't want everyone sending all five submissions upfront to try and beat each other out (probably less likely to happen with your stuff but still).
I might get you to PM me every round just to confirm that you want me to use the appropriate song from this list. And to all other future participants, I'd rather you all just send each song when the previous round has ended.
Also I didn't mention it previously but I intend to post results at different times each round so that no particular users or timezones have an advantage of always getting to send before others. Although being from Australia and having a fucked up timezone compared to everyone else, I'm not sure how effective this will be.
-
Yeah I think I can manage to send some good shit. I'm in :metal
I don't think the rules covered this, but what about singles released (late) 2016 that eventually got featured on the album they were meant for in 2017? (Example of a band on the banned list: Soen - Sectarian got released in 2016 but the full album came out in 2017)
-
I'm in! Got plenty of stuff I could send.
-

You're right, I didn't really address this. I'm inclined to allow it since the song was basically put out as promotional material for the album which was a 2017 release, and I'd consider its "official" release to be with the album or EP. Plus I don't want to have to check every submission to make sure it wasn't put up on Youtube or Spotify in the few weeks before January 1st. :lol
-
In! :metal

I'll join, but like I said in the roulette tracker thread, if some other participants send lots of stuff I have on my list, it could be so that I won't be able to make it to round 5 (in which case I'll take my loss for not being able to meet the requirements). I have about 12 albums that I don't see on your list, so I think it should be okay.
Good to see the stars back! Same scoring system this time? :neverusethis:
-
it could be so that I won't be able to make it to round 5 (in which case I'll take my loss for not being able to meet the requirements).
Rank the twelve by how likely they are to be sent by other people, send the most likely first and work your way down. You might make it through and piss off a lot of people on the way. (https://i.imgur.com/xXwPDs6.png)
I added a new rule to the roulette. Normally this isn't something I would do, but I probably should have had a rule addressing this in there to begin with just in case it happens.
-
I’ll join.
-
I won't participate this time as I don't believe there is lots of stuff I can send :/ but following to discover some new releases as well :tup
-
Just counted, 15 out of my top 20 2017 albums are not on your list. Seems like we might have different tastes :lol
(It does mean that I can count on other people to send DT favourites like Steven Wilson and Mastodon)
-
Feel free to start sending aswell, two people are in already. I will start listening on Tuesday and probably close signups at the same time.
-
Sent!
Based on your last.fm charts and what you have listened to this year, I feel like you should like the song I sent, but it could also massively backfire...
-
I'll join :metal

Is it safe to assume that the them of each round is "Knock my fuckin socks off"?

Is it safe to assume that the them of each round is "Knock my fuckin socks off"?
Except for round 5. That one is 'send the worst song from the worst album you've heard in 2017'.

Well, you can send me something boring and repetitive for a change of pace one round if you'd like. :lol

I'll pop my roulette cherry.
Tough restrictions but I might just be able to scrape together enough material of various quality!

Pretty sure the "Knock my fuckin socks off" would be the change of pace from J Boy.

That's not what your wife said.
-
Turns out of all the things I could forget to put on the banned list, I left out an album I actually liked and one from a DTF fave. I have rectified this just now and so Steven Wilson's To The Bone has been added to the list.
Since there was probably a few of you considering sending a song from that one, I thought I'd better mention it instead of just stealth-editing the list. :lol
edit: Forgot Ayreon too as it turns out.

lol I noticed the glaring omission of Ayreon and Steven Wilson as well :lol

I'll take 'Things regularly heard in the TAC household for $400, Alex".
:lol
So true.
-
I'll probably start listening in about 15 hours or so, if those who have not sent could do so before then, that'd be great. If not I just won't get a chance to listen to those songs as many times.
-
I'm still lacking a song from one person, but everyone else is in and I'm about to start my first listen. :corn
Since we're now locked with 9 participants, I can reveal how the stars will be distributed. This table indicates which star you will get, depending upon where your song ranks.
-
pink stars have no value, apparently :lol
-
pink stars have no value, apparently :lol
Their value is infact greater than 0.
I did consider having the bottom one or two (depending on how many signed up) receive nothing, but with only five rounds I thought that would make it too difficult for people to make a comeback.
-
i mean, the end result is that everyone gets at least the value of a pink star, which makes them in practice worthless
-
Yeah, I guess they are just a holdover from a system where there was something of lower value (nothing). Still, I don't want to remove them now because the point difference between the other stars and nothing could be too great. It worked with ten rounds but with only five this time I think less volatility is better.
-
needless to say i will be attempting to collect a perfect set of 5 pink stars, to defend my crown

I am relieved my first ever contribution isn't going to be met with hatred! Although I reckon I'll be going pink this first round (and the following 4) ;D
-
hi five soupy we can be Pink Pals™
-
hi five soupy we can be Pink Pals™
Now that's a Trademark I can get onboard with! :tup
My mindset since on my first entry.
- This is a cool song I think Bolsters will like it.
*Sends Entry.
- Hmm maybe the song wasn't an instant earworm, should have played it safer.
- Actually maybe the song is too tame.
- Why did I sent that song it's not even the best on the album.
- FUCKING song, I don't even like it myself anymore.
- Pink Stars - gotta catch em all.
-
Typical roulette thoughts :lol
-
I guess it was me you're referring to in the title, yes?
Going for something better than second place this time :)

Now we can get started on the really important stuff.

Jesus H Christ, how do you pick that out from few random underscores!?!?!?
Just saying, I'm pretty confident I'll be able to guess ZERO of these.
-
Be interesting to see how the Brand New songs are rated as something from that album was going to be a later pick for me ;D
-
Wait, someone has to guess a number to find out whether I sent 137 or 451? :lol to be honest the one I didn't send is probably just as good, I knew from the beginning I wanted to send one of those.
I think that long song is Jupiter by Sufjan Stevens, James McAlister and a few other guys, I have no idea what the complete artist name is. That might be home who sent it.
Jesus H Christ, how do you pick that out from few random underscores!?!?!?
Probably because with 2017 the picks are very limited, and I've listened to a ton of music last year and those I didn't listen to I've probably seen in roulettes or best of 2017 threads. That '/' gave away the Brand New song for me.
Oh and there's a song by The Hirsch Effekt that could be either Berceuse or Inukshuk sent by Parama. Why no Xenophotobia??
-

Exactly this, there are like 20 bands I'm pretty confident will be sent here, so I can just check if they fit the underscorses.
Ok, did Train sent 451?
Also,
I guess Sacul sent the other Brand New song and Soupytwist Mew?

I also predict submissions from Tim and I will consistently be the last two anyone figures out.
Probably because with 2017 the picks are very limited,
Does. Not. Compute.
There's still hundreds of albums to chose from. But I guess when you know the tastes and regular submissions of many of the players, then it does compute.
-
Yeah I guess the latter is what I mean.
For example, I haven't read about this album on DTF at all (probably just missed it) but because it's a fairly popular one amongst prog-releases of 2017 I still know the band name and style of music despite not having heard a note of their music: Daydream XI. Probably yours?
-
Nipping in to steal undeserved glory...
Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner and James McAlister - Jupiter.

i'd send something off the latest brand new but i have a feeling someone else will cover that for me (and get a nice shiny star out of it in the process)
thanks for being predictable :corn
even sent the same song I would've sent
i want an R
also the Daydream XI song is Trust-Forged Knife
-
jingly sent The Light in the Dark by Masqued
TAC sent Daydream XI

jingly sent The Light in the Dark by Masqued
I'd say that's impressive, but you probably just snooped on my last.fm. :lol

I also predict submissions from Tim and I will consistently be the last two anyone figures out.
Probably because with 2017 the picks are very limited,
Does. Not. Compute.
I mean, I dunno. I skipped this roulette because, like in Kade's situation, basically almost all the albums I knew from 2017 were banned.
-
Y'all just need to look harder, I had way more in 2017 than I could even get to, heck I'm still looking into the last of the 2017 stuff I missed :lol
-
Y'all just need to look harder, I had way more in 2017 than I could even get to, heck I'm still looking into the last of the 2017 stuff I missed :lol
I just kind of have no real desire to discover a lot of new music I suppose. I've checked some albums here and there from my favourite bands and a few from the bands I didn't know about but that was it.
But hey, maybe I'll find something I would want to check out in this roulette.
-
I shift between wanting new stuff desperately (and listening to a lot of 'new' stuff weeks in a row) to not giving a damn about anything new that's released and returning to my favourites. On a yearly basis I think I'll listen to about 30 records released from that year, in addition to at least that amount in albums released earlier. There's no way I can even come close to some of the end-year lists I see on these forums, where people have managed to listen to and rank over a hundred albums.
-
I've probably listened to around 150-200 2017 albums but only have about 45ish (looking to get 10-12 more at most from what I'm still checking out, dunno)
Year end lists for best albums of 2017 helped a little :lol

Rite??
I'm by no means on Brent-tier level of looking for new releases, but I had about 130 albums I sampled - 27 I purchased; 30 are saved on Spotify, and the rest weren't worthy of repeated listens. There's probably another 30 or so that I got a few songs in before realizing 'not mah thang'... and pulled the ripcord. I'm sure Brent's year end podcast will add at least another 20 to the list.
Ruslan... you're free to check out all my stuff - it ought to be right up your alley.
Kade... you are not - since I'll be likely to use at least a couple in your roulette.
-
I counted 16 artists/albums of last year that I would have sent Bolsters regardless of restrictions, and if for whatever reason I run out of stuff by round 5 there's still the 2017 album bands that I normally wouldn't send Bolsters but I do like enough personally to send them in roulettes. Of those 16, only 1 other than my own got sent (Persefone).
Speaking of, I'm pretty sure which of you fuckers sent Persefone, has to be Puppies at this point right?
-
are you sure?
-
Well yeah, because only you and puppies are left. It can't be you, because you sent Golden Caves - Child of Mine already
:hat :hat :hat
-
screw you :lol
I'm sure that a minute before posting that you had no idea that band even exists
-
Kade... you are not - since I'll be likely to use at least a couple in your roulette.
I'd like to follow this to be honest, but I won't check anything mate. Thinking about my roulette it might be hard to find artists that wouldn't be banned that would appeal to me so I think a lot of this new stuff you guys are checking is probably perfect. You know, looking at Jon's banned 2017 list and you guys saying how much other stuff you have, I could do the same thing, make it a full roulette and probably you guys still wouldn't struggle to find stuff.

TAC: Daydream XI - Trust-Forged Knife
soupytwist: Mew - Twist Quest
Sacul: Brand New - Same Logic / Teeth
jingle: Masqued - The Light in the Dark
Parama: The Hirsch Effekt - Inukshuk
Train: Brand New - 137
home: Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner and James McAlister - Jupiter
Puppies: Persefone - No Faced Mindless
Elite: Golden Caves - Child of Mine
None of the letters on Inukshuk had been guessed but you had it narrowed down to two songs, might as well just end this.
Results on the weekend, most likely Sunday.
-
i'll be totally honest same logic / teeth is definitely better than what i sent. and jupiter is close to it too. i dunno most of the other songs though
-
Fuck yeah, Persefone. Probably the only one I could have sent but even that album I only gave a single listen and didn't spend more time on it like I should have, great band.
-
Hey Bolsters I just noticed in the tracker thread you have Parama listed as the only participant in your roulette :lol
@Persefone: I kinda think that song suffers a bit from overly technical wankery, personally would've sent Stillness is Timeless as that's my song of the year, but still hope Persefone fairs well with our host cause they have a lot of good stuff in their discography
@The Hirsch Effekt: I think Inukshuk might have been the best pick for Bolsters specifically, but personally there's at least 4-5 songs I prefer on that album
137 > Same Logic / Teeth :corn
-
Quick question about them rules.
I have a song I'd like to use in a later round. The song itself was released as a single in 2017, but the album it's on only dropped last week. I'm guessing I can't use it then?
137 > Same Logic / Teeth :corn

I was torn between No Faced Mindless and Stillness is Timeless. I eventually just said YOLO and flipped a coin. I think I may have tried to hard to pick a band that I think Bolsters would like based on his last.fm profile. From here on in I'm just going to send songs from my absolute favorite albums of 2017, consequences be damned...

I'm still on track for results Sunday.
Since I'm several listens in, some impressions: While there's clearly songs much better than others here and despite having little trouble with the ranking outside one or two instances, this was a solid round. I am quite certain that I will check out all eight of these albums, which is great. The songs receiving pink stars probably deserve (slightly) better, but there's nothing I can do about that.

(https://i.imgur.com/1kwOtAM.png) Puppies_On_Acid: Persefone - No Faced Mindless (Aathma)
- This song is a real punch in the face, in the best possible way. I can kind of see what Train meant when he said it's very technical, but honestly I'd rather listen to something like this where the technicality is in short intermittent bursts these days than I would something that goes for 14 minutes and has a solid 8 minutes of pure musical wanking. That kind of thing wears thin on me. This stuff? Not so much.
This song has a bit of an identity crisis, but it works, because it helps to keep things interesting. One minute it's technical prog, then it's fairly death metal inspired, it's almost black metal, and around the half-way mark there's a nice little piano break and chords/synths that give the song some more melodic heft that it somewhat lacked up until that point, before going back to prog again with a cool little rhythmic guitar riff. The structure of the song is pretty frantic really, but each of the things it does are done exceptionally well, and it's plenty catchy to boot, so the one thing you can't say about this song is that it ever gets boring.
Vocally, things are also good. Core-like vocals can be a bit hit-or-miss with me, but I like what's going on here, and the singer doesn't really rely on one particular genre trope anyway; there's lines where he starts out sounding like metalcore only to descend into something I'd expect from black metal. Like the instrumental parts of the song I guess, in that there are a lot of influences here that it goes back and forth between, and excelling at all of them. The clean vocals in the latter half are good too, and at that point of the song it's a welcomed way to change things up. The clean vocal sound reminds me a bit of the style used by Being.
Overall, this is just too :metal for me not to have loved, it pretty much touches on all the things I like without annoying me with the things that I don't like too much, like excessive self-indulgence from prog metal or lack of melody in death metal. A very good choice for a Bolsters roulette, probably why Train seemed annoyed that someone had sent this band before he got a chance to. :tup
(https://i.imgur.com/KUyp8Oq.png) Train of Naught: Brand New - 137 (Science Fiction)
- You know, this song kind of reminds me of that Long Distance Calling track I got in my last roulette. If that's why you chose to send this song and it wasn't simply chance, it was a wise decision.
This song is one giant build-up, and that's fine, because it's done well. I dig these twangy clean guitars and minimal, low-end drumming and these simple vocal harmonies in the intro, and the slow build as more guitars and the rest of the kit are added. But there's a bit more to it than that, the vocal harmonies get additional layers and the singer goes into higher register as this goes on; it seems more elaborate than simply just throwing in another instrument or another part of the drum kit every now and then, even though it does do that too. And of course, the natural conclusion is to just let rip with distorted electrics and a guitar solo, and one final chorus with everything all at once. This song builds its dynamics up very effectively, from its great atmospheric beginnings to the :metal climax.
It's also catchy, that guitar/vocal line shared melody is great and after listening to all of these songs I'd often find that was the thing that would stick with me for a while afterwards. I have to say if this was a deliberate attempt to try to achieve the success of that Long Distance Calling song, it was definitely a wise choice.
(https://i.imgur.com/x9c3FDJ.png) Parama: The Hirsch Effekt - Inukshuk (Eskapist)
- I have to admit to having gone into my first listen of this song with some bias. I knew this was a highly rated album of yours from last year, and I don't really think I've found us all too compatible when it comes to metal. So it was surprising when I actually quite liked this song, and liked it as much as I did.
First, I like the atmosphere in the verses and other lighter parts of the song. There's a rumbling, distorted synth that starts the song off and sits in the background in a lot of places that I like, and there's a natural progression in dynamics from the first verse with just the clean guitar into the second verse with a chugging riff and busier drumming, and I really like the post-second chorus build up; glitchy white noise, a slightly distorted piano playing what I think is an ascending chromatic chord progression? That and the lo-fi drumming build the song up very effectively for the final chorus. The song is just really good at building up, not just with the dynamics and fullness of sound, but these ascending progressions, one in the chorus played by the bass that ultimately gets pulled out by switching to a much lower note at the end. Even the screamy, core-like vocals aren't a detriment for me here, the talents of the vocalist are utilised perfectly to suit the tone of the song at any given point.
That's not to say I don't have gripes. You probably expected that I would comment on the production, so here it is. The intermittent distorted guitar notes during the first verse sticks out like a sore thumb, and I found it rather obnoxious, although as the song progresses it becomes less annoying (probably because there's more going on and it fits in better at that stage). I think the mix works perfectly fine in the lighter parts of the song, such as the verses and that build-up in the second half of the song. Infact, if anything the fact that the production isn't too perfect or clean actually enhances these parts of the song. But the chorus is fairly muddy, there's a lot of boomy low-mid on the bass and kick that causes them to clash with one another, and the lack of high-end (those cymbals in particular) that works for the verses contributes to this muddy/boxy sound aswell. The kick lacks the punch to make it stand out properly in the chorus, but its very strong low end results in it just being a loud thudding noise. It almost sounds as though they mixed the entire song based on what it was going to sound like in the verses but didn't take the time to tweak the mix for the choruses at all, and so the production doesn't work that well in the chorus as a result. But overall these aren't enormous gripes that have a huge effect on my enjoyment of the song, just a little bit of an effekt.
So, the Paraman gets silver in the first round and is off to a pretty good start, still plenty of time for him to fuck that up though I guess.
(https://i.imgur.com/x9c3FDJ.png) Sacul: Brand New - Same Logic / Teeth (Science Fiction)
- Like the previous Brand New track, I really dig the atmosphere and dynamics here. With this one I prefer the lighter parts, and the interplay between clean guitars and vocals. There are some beautiful vocal harmonies in this song aswell, "Well this is the same logic..." is a great example and I like how the slow build-up up to that point is dropped and the song thins out again.
The chorus is probably my least favourite thing, not that it's bad, but it's definitely the weakest part of the song, it's perhaps a bit too much of a generic modern rock sound with the raw, slightly distorted vocals. Everything else is definitely stronger here.
There's some really effective panning in this track aswell (is that an odd thing to praise? :lol), the way the busier, harder guitar lines are hard left and then the drums are used in the right to balance that out; generally you don't see the snare move out of centre much in music, but it gets panned slightly to the right with the hi-hats at any point the guitarist is playing over on the left - but any time he isn't, such as during the chorus, it's back to being dead centre again. I really appreciate this kind of attention to detail in the mixing, changing where things are depending on which elements are present in order to keep the L/R dynamics balanced, and it creates a nice juxtaposition between verse and chorus, as the verses heavily rely on left/right panning but the choruses are mixed to favour the centre over everything else.
Definitely only the second-best Brand New song I received, but still quite good.
(https://i.imgur.com/CglH4lS.png) soupytwist: Mew - Twist Quest (Visuals)
- This is not the first time I've received Mew in a roulette, and if I recall the last one didn't do too well. Although, that was quite a few years ago and my tastes have evolved more than enough since then that I expect I'd probably like that former song more now than I did back then if I were to listen to it again. Anyway, I had high hopes for this song and it didn't disappoint.
The first thing that stands out about this song is the groove on the drums, I like the alternating single and double hits on the hi-hat with the same on the snare, and there's some subtle ghost hits filling out the beat aswell. There is a nice almost ethereal chorus in this song I like too, filled out nicely with strings.
I'm a sucker for a good saxaphone, and that song has that going for it aswell. The earlier use of the saxaphone is this bouncy, almost staccato melody that fills out the second verse, but it's allowed to let loose with some melodic playing not soon after.
All in all, a solid submission and one that I really would have liked to give a much better star to. Alas, there were a lot of strong submissions this round and I unfortunately have to give this song a bronze star. But, giving this song bronze is probably my biggest regret of the round, so I hope you don't loose too much confidence over it.
(https://i.imgur.com/CglH4lS.png) Elite: Golden Caves - Child of Mine (Collision)
- Not a bad song (despite the low ranking) but like a few other submissions this round, I just couldn't get past the "heard it all before" feeling every time I listened to this song. The hammond sound in prog rock/metal has been done to death for one. There's some nice grooves with the drumming and guitar chords in particular driving the song here, during the verses that is, which for some reason I kind of expected from a song that you sent. I think the drummer overall makes the song a bit more interesting in a lot of places, even if again it doesn't seem like anything I haven't heard before. Maybe it's just that he(?) seems to be trying a bit harder? Anyway, having said all that I think that the vocalist is probably the star here, I actually quite like her and it's again something I sort of thought I would take away from something you'd sent. This is a pretty good chorus too really, I like the way the piano cuts above everything else in the mix.
Yeah, I mean this is a pretty good song despite my gripes about it not really breaking the mould in any way. It did kind of grow on me too though, at first you were 100% going to be pink, then I was kind of feeling bad about giving it pink, then it actually managed to break above Tim's song into bronze at the last minute, but I just didn't feel like ranking this song any higher than this.
(https://i.imgur.com/vqCNLDJ.png) home: Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner and James McAlister - Jupiter (Planetarium)
- This song was probably the biggest mixed bag of the round. By that I mean, there's some stuff in here that I really like, but unfortunately my gripes with other stuff had a fairly large impact on my overall enjoyment of the song. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy it, and to be honest I'd have liked to award a better star here, but I just really couldn't bring myself to rank the song higher than any of the previous tracks.
Anyway, let's start with the good. There's some really good atmosphere in this track that I like, the synths are appealing and the vocal style and scat along with the effects on the vocals really mesh well together - the delay on the vox in particular also helps to flesh the sound out a bit. I also like the use of strings in the parts of the song where they appear, and there's a really strong showing from the brass section during the outro aswell.
The things that detracted for me? Well the song can be a little repetitive in places, the drum beats especially. The latter parts of the song when the drum samples are more prominent and playing in quick bursts grated on me quite a bit; I know it's electronica but the overly mechanical sound of the samples is too painfully obvious during this point in the song, whereas it wasn't a problem for me elsewhere, and this goes on for quite a bit and returns for the outro aswell.
All in all I think this was probably the most divisive song of the round for me. I really dig the things that I liked, the lighter electronic sections and the general atmosphere in most of the song, but then there were a few things that dragged the song down in a big way aswell, unfortunately. It probably barely deserves better than pink but I'm just not able to give you anything better this time.
(https://i.imgur.com/vqCNLDJ.png) TAC: Daydream XI - Trust-Forged Knife (The Circus of the Tattered and Torn)
- I'm not sure if you'll be disheartened by where this song ranks or not. I definitely think it's a solid metal track but when it comes to this sort of stuff, I am always asking myself "What makes this stand out?" and while this is definitely an enjoyable track, I can't really say that there is much that does, and that's why you didn't rank higher.
Anyway, highlights. I like the riffing and drumming in this song, the chorus being a particular standout. Don't mind this vocalist which helps, but at the same time it's not really the most stand-out performance either. The lighter middle section is cool, probably my favourite part of the song. I like that it's stripped back with clean guitar, but the drum breaks are fairly busy, and the backing vocals fill out the sound well.
So overall this ain't a bad song, definitely checking out the album... it's just not anything too spectacular at the same time. But at least you beat Chad? :lol
(https://i.imgur.com/vqCNLDJ.png) jingle.boy: Masqued - The Light in the Dark (The Light in the Dark)
- This song definitely isn't bad despite ranking so low, but every time I listened to it I couldn't help but think to myself how unspectacular it is. There's not really anything here I haven't heard before, and I have to use a phrase I think I've used a few times with your submissions and call this "good but not great". Instrumentally it's fine, some decent riffs and I like the drumming, although the keys are extremely generic in both sound and style. The abrupt change going into the chorus is rather jarring, sounds like there might be a slight tempo change there aswell which makes it worse. Neither of these vocalists is anything special either, and I don't really like the female vox. I mean I'll check this album out but this song doesn't really stand out at all.
You're not off to the best start this time, I'm afraid, and as the round went on I just found myself wanting to bump this down more. I really didn't think you'd end up at the bottom of all places, but both Rich and home's submissions kind of grew on me a bit more as I listened to them; yours, not so much.
Feel free to send your next submissions as soon as possible.

Wow, Persefone at #1, amazing! You're gonna love that album (the name is Aathma btw, not Aethma). I'm not going to doubt your song picks anymore Puppies :tup
I was starting to think Same Logic / Teeth would edge out my song but I'm glad you liked both and obviously will check out that album, it's one of my most listened albums of last year and it's still on regular rotation. And about Long Distance Calling, honestly don't like a lot of their songs, the few ones I do like are the instrumental post-metal/rock tunes, so that was just coincidence I guess.
I'll send right now in case I happen to send the exact same song as someone else and get cockblocked.
-

I had to wonder because that song got diamond, it's structually very similar to what you sent, and I know you were familiar with it because you mentioned at the time that I'd like that album.

I see what you're saying about the Masqued track, but I still think you're full of shit :lol. That album very much gave me the same vibe as The Butterfly Effect, and that's a "top" album on the banned list.
If that - and Daydream XI (which was my AOTY) - were the bottom two, methinks our tastes have diverged a bit since your last roulette. I also just listened to the Top 3 tunes and yeah... definitely far too growlie and non-metally for me.

I know what you're saying, The Butterfly Raiser is far from the most original sounding album ever. But I thought it was extremely well executed, very strong melodically, very consistent quality, and I like the vocal performances. This Masqued track just seemed to lack the polish to really make its mark on me; it's not anywhere near the same league as The Butterfly Raiser as far as I'm concerned. Plus The Butterfly Raiser would probably struggle to rank against my top albums from the last few years, it's just 2017 was a bit dull for me overall.
If that - and Daydream XI (which was my AOTY) - were the bottom two, methinks our tastes have diverged a bit since your last roulette.
I do think my tastes have evolved since my last roulette in the sense that it's now more inclusive - there's more that I like now that I wouldn't have then. But at the same time I don't think anything has been pushed out, as it were. I slammed some of your submissions for the same reasons back then as I did this song right now.
-
- But at least you beat Chad? :lol
Well, at least that's familiar territory. ;D

And I thought sending heavy shit would not work out well..
I'll figure out what to send next soon
-
i've already matched my bolsters roulette v1 performance and surpassed my v2 performance, nice :corn
you already have all my songs so i guess technically SENT
-
Wow, I'm really surprised I got the Diamond star on that song, considering some of the other songs submitted.
How am I supposed to follow that up now....?
I'm just going to have to blow my load right here, right now, all over the place... Sent a nearly 14 minute epic, perhaps my favorite song of the year.....
Preparing for massive crashing and burning :corn :corn :corn :corn :corn
-
if it's what i think you sent i'm gonna have to resend one of my entries for the later rounds :P
fortunately it's the entry of mine that was least likely to do well so it's whatever
-
Probably the same song. I may just send nothing but Black Metal for the rest of the roulette...
-
Hey Bolsters can you confirm you got my submissions, I sent it Friday because I'm travelling most of this week, my browser crashed as I sent them, pretty sure it worked.
Oh and thanks for the bronze Star and write up. I'm genuinely pleased you enjoyed the song? Can you remember the previous new song you heard?

I went back and checked, it was Comforting Sounds.

Let's hope you'll like my next entry more! But I haven't really looked at your tastes, I'm just going to send you some of my favourites from 2017 (since so many of them aren't on your banned list)

Eagleheart track is Until Fear is Gone. Listened to this album today, pretty good stuff, need to revisit it. Not sure if I liked this particular song (it's the first one on the album, right?), but overall good stuff.

It's track #2, but the opener is just an intro/seque.

It's track #2, but the opener is just an intro/seque.
Yeah, I think the one that caught my attention the most was the next track with "blood! death! sorrow!" and then high-pitched "something something aaaah!" in the chorus (which was awesome), but I was pretty distracted at work so I'll have to spin this album again.

I might post results tomorrow, but it's more likely going to be Monday.
This round was a bit mixed compared to the last one. The best here definitely isn't on par with the best songs of last round, so a couple of you are getting away with easy diamond/gold stars, and the silver stars this round aren't really comparable to the silver of last either. Conversely, at the other end I think the pink star songs this round are definitely stronger than those from the last round, so some of you are getting the short stick.
Ranking this has been difficult and is not finalised, but I am not going to waste time ranking songs within the same score tier. So just because your song is last in the upcoming results might not necessarily mean it was a song I liked less than the other two pink star songs, it's just that I don't find it necessary to mull over ranking things that are getting the same score anyway. Same goes for the two silver star songs and bronze star songs.

(https://i.imgur.com/1kwOtAM.png) Elite: Lesoir - Gone and Forgotten (Latitude)
- I'm not sure if you remembered, but you actually sent Lesoir to me during my first roulette. That song didn't score though (Chad won that matchup) and it looks like I only ever listened to that album once long ago, so I saw no reason not to allow this song.
So to start with, I like how this song builds up. It has a pretty ambient intro that leads into a verse of clean but slightly overdriven guitars, some pretty active drum beats, and soft dreamy vocals. We don't even really get a chorus of sorts until after the halfway point, and it's driven more by the bass than anything else which is in contrast to everything before. Then the distorted guitars and violins come out for a really epic section that leads into the final vocal section and outro - all of which happens to be my favourite thing about this song.
So, nice build-up and good dynamics, a nice vocal performance, excellent use of strings for a strong climax. Gripes? Well the intro is probably a bit overlong and takes too long to get to the point, given the total length of the song. But I can't really think of anything else to criticise and that's not a big issue anyway, so while this probably would have only been a silver-star song last round, you've managed to do far better in this one. :tup
(https://i.imgur.com/KUyp8Oq.png) soupytwist: Van William ft First Aid Kit - Revolution (The Revolution EP)
- My first impressions of this song were good, but definitely not as favourable as my current thoughts. This song is a bit saccharine for the mostpart, but it's very well done and quite catchy. I especially like the female vocalist, the "wooing" scat vocals accompanied by the busier mix, and there's some tasty brass mixed in for good measure as well.
Really, I think maybe the previously mentioned saccharine sound is perhaps my only real gripe with the song, and I'm probably being a bit pedantic at this point anyway. The song definitely grew on me the more I listened to it and made its way up the ranks slowly but surely, at first I'd have scoffed at the idea of it getting this good of a star but in this round? I can easily justify it. Good stuff.
(https://i.imgur.com/x9c3FDJ.png) Puppies_On_Acid: Der Weg einer Freiheit - Ein letzter Tanz (Finisterre)
- I had a bit of a hard time getting into this one, but the more I listened to it the more I liked the good things and the less I was bothered by the bad. So while not as strong an effort as your first round's song, this didn't end up doing too badly.
This song has some good chord progressions and the perfect, fuzzy guitar tone to highlight the dissonance in them, a perfect example being the extended, slower-paced intro to the song, but remains relevant when the pace picks up. At first the incessant double-kicking grated on me a bit, as it can do when I find it overused, but those parts of the song grew on me the more I heard it. Blastbeats are another thing used quite a bit here that grate on me, and to be honest I'd have preferred a lot less of them, but as I delved deeper I found an appreciation for the way the band changes up things in the blastbeat sections; the cymbal work changes and isn't as repetitive as the kick/snare and brings some variance, and there are little drum fills now and then that alleviate the monotony of them. Still, parts where the drumming has more groove are definitely what I prefer from this song - when the drums stop at around 5:48 and the song slowly builds back up is what gets me going :metal the most.
Having said all that, this was probably more of a risk than you might realise. While I do listen to some extreme metal it is very often hit or miss with me, and while there's a couple of elements that scream "miss" in this track, on the whole you managed to send something that "hit" and did so despite the song still containing some elements of the genre that don't gel well with me all that much. I mean I even found something to like in my biggest complaint about the song (blast beats) which is definitely something.
If anyone recalls, Parama sent all five submissions at the beginning of the roulette and this band was one of them, although a different song. I gave it a listen yesterday and didn't really like it at all, so you definitely made a better choice from this album compared to him, and it looks like you might have saved him from a poor score - if the replacement song I get ends up being good. :corn
(https://i.imgur.com/x9c3FDJ.png) Parama: Enslaved - Hiindsiight (E)
- It seems you didn't fuck up your decent start to this roulette just yet.
So this song has some pretty stark contrast between what I suppose could be called the verses (despite being completely instrumental for the first half of the song) which I quite like the sound of, and have an almost major key sound (I think it's just the chord choices though?) and these short, intermittent bursts of doom metal with harsh vocals. It is perhaps a bit abrupt but I like the change in style, although these parts I don't think are as good and they are a bit generic-sounding though not terrible at least.
Then there's some saxaphone almost out of nowhere which I think really elevates the song, it's not what I would have expected and it adds an interesting flavour or timbre to the song. This outro is decent aswell and I'm glad the last few minutes of the song don't just repeat what we've had up until that point and there's something new. It has a weird tonal contrast, with the sax playing a melody and clean, dreamy and layered vocals; but there's still a dissonance to it somewhat, like there are notes in these layers here and there that conflict with other elements. But I kind of like that.
Perhaps surprisingly, you're still going pretty good so far. :corn
(https://i.imgur.com/CglH4lS.png) jingle.boy: Eagleheart - Until Fear is Gone (Reverse)
- Well first off, this is much better than the previous song you sent, so maybe your new strategy of just sending your favourite things is going to do better? I guess we'll find out in the remaining three rounds.
So this one has a lot more melody to it, stronger riffs, and so it's much more memorable and catchy. They aren't breaking the mold here but the execution is spot on. I think my favourite thing here is the whole solo/instrumental section though; it starts off with some :metal and then there's a guitar unison solo that's pretty epic before letting rip again.
Yeah, this is definitely better.
(https://i.imgur.com/CglH4lS.png) TAC: Loch Vostok - Babylonian Groove (Strife)
- Vocalist is strong in the chorus and the intermittent screaming vox are done well. My favourite part is the lead-in to the guitar solo, the ascending chord progression, agression of the guitars and increasingly harsh vocals build the song up very well.
On the other hand, I'm not the biggest fan of this vocalist in the verses, though strangely he also uses clean vocals in the chorus which I don't mind. I think maybe the melodies or the range in the verses simply isn't as flattering to him. Infact, the verses in general are probably just the weakest part of the track, though that doesn't mean to say I find them bad.
Not that there was much wrong with your first submission, but I definitely dig this much more. Good stuff.
(https://i.imgur.com/vqCNLDJ.png) Train of Naught: Trivium - The Wretchedness Inside (The Sin and The Sentence)
- In a lot of ways, this was a bit different to what I was expecting from Trivium. Previous Trivium songs I have heard were fairly straight-up thrash with core-like vocals and neither of those things traditionally appealed to me (though I've warmed up to this vocal style for the mostpart, I'm still no thrash fan). So, I was pleasantly surprised when this turned out to be much more modern than I was expecting, even slightly djenty-sounding. This style of metal is definitely more appealing to me than what I remember from Crusade/Shogun-era Trivium.
On the good side of things, this is pretty catchy and I like the heaviness. It's a pretty strong chorus and I like the alternating vocal styles. The verses are a nice change of pace as well, being driven by the bass more. Production is also really good, a very clean and modern metal sound.
My biggest gripe here is probably that it is a bit on the generic side in a lot of places, I mean that prechorus with the the kick on the odd beats then guitar and cymbal on the offbeat is very recognisable from many other things, the structure is also extremely predictable, and other than the aformentioned prechorus I don't think there is a single guitar chord in this song that is not accompanied by the kick. But despite that and despite ranking this where I did, it's still a decent :metal track. I really didn't think you would end up getting pink for this but the consistency this round in the mid/low rankings was pretty good and a lot better than last round, and I think this song might deserve better than a pink star...but I'm just unable to give you anything better here. :(
(https://i.imgur.com/vqCNLDJ.png) Sacul: Lunatic Soul - Blood on the Tightrope (Fractured)
- So, as you may have guessed already this song was a bit of a mixed bag and definitely not as strong as your Brand New entry from last round. :\
Let's start with the good: Production and style-wise I quite dig what is going on. I like the strange sound of the bass synth in particular, I think the wide range on the notes in the bassline make it really stand out. I really like the change in atmosphere brought on by the piano in the back half of the song too, and there's a nice solo piano break later on that is a welcome change. Mariusz is on point but I'd expect no less.
On to the bad...despite some legitimate evolution to the dynamics and introduction of new sounds across the song's length, it is still very reptitive at its core. The drum beat remains constant (or close enough to it), and even the bassline I mentioned liking earlier is greatly overused. I think this problem is exacerbated by the length of the track as well, clocking in at over seven minutes.
Overall I enjoy the song, and to the best of my knowledge I surprisingly haven't checked Lunatic Soul before this and look forward to listening to the album. However, the lack of variance hurt this song a fair bit and I can't really rank it any higher than this.
(https://i.imgur.com/vqCNLDJ.png) home: Sleep Party People - Figures (Lingering)
- First off, I really like the style, sound and the mix of this song. The bass is probably the star for me, I also like the alternating lo-fi and full fidelity drum loops. The parts where the song almost comes to a complete stop (is this the shoegaze?) are interesting if abrupt, but welcome changes in the song at a couple of points and contrast against the more cheerful sound of the song with dissonance.
Depite that, I have one pretty big gripe with this song, and it's one that those who played in my previous roulettes are likely familiar with: this song is very repetitive. That cool two chord bass line I mentioned liking before is the only bass line in the entire song, and it gets repeated a lot - even when the bass isn't there, this same ostinato is played by another organ-like synth. The guitar line is similarly overplayed and repetitive. There is a build-up of elements towards the later parts of the song that provide some variance, the drum beat in particular evolves a bit despite still being built on the exact same beat, but there just isn't enough variety in this song for me.
So, on one hand I really like the sound and style of this track, but the overly-repetitive structure was a detriment here and I was bugged by that the more I listened to the song. I did like this more than the pink star songs from last round though (including your own) and am definitely checking out the album...but I am hoping that the rest of the songs have more to them than this one does.

Oh wow. Wasn't expecting this - I only really sent it to showcase the vocals of First Aid Kit, the female voices. Unfortunately their own most recent album came out this year and I couldn't use anything from it.
-
That's probably the only song on the album that sounds djenty to be honest, most of the other songs are a fair bit more alternative metal-leaning so check at own risk. I think it's a fine album though.
This does make me hesitate my round 3 submission though, cause while not metal, that could also easily be categorized as generic. I'll give it a couple more hours.
I only listened to that Loch Vostok album once after I got Yurei in my roulette from TAC, I think Babylonian Groove was one of my favourites next to Yurei, I don't remember well though

Judging from Bolsters' tastes, I don't think he would like the more traditional side of Trivium as much as this song, sending Trivium was generally probably a bad decision. The Wretchedness Inside is top 3 of the album for me though behind Betrayer and the title track.

Any early thoughts?
This is a more consistent and overall higher quality round compared to the last, but there's a couple of songs that aren't really doing it for me yet and it's probably too late in the round for that to change. The high points of Round 1 also remain uncontested.

honestly this is the song i felt would most likely be a hit with you so i'm totally prepared to be totally wrong and pink star it up :corn

(https://i.imgur.com/1kwOtAM.png) jingle.boy: Damnations Day - To Begin Again (A World Awakens)
- Well it took you until the third (of five :lol) round but finally you've sent me something that actually leaves and impact on me and that is memorable. :tup Not the greatest song ever or anything, but solid, and enough to top out this particular round of songs.
I particularly like the vocalist, which is always a plus with Australian bands because I think we tend to have a lot of shit singers in this country for some reason. :lol Not to say that we haven't produced our fair share of great ones that is, but I couldn't tell you how many Aussie bands I've sampled and the one major thing that puts me off of listening to that band is the vocalist - especially when it comes to metal. The transition from "and I feel Alive" into "Tell me all your thoughts" is really cool, both vocally and the way the song transitions from an almost dreamy phase into raw heaviness. I like the overdriven guitar sound too, it almost sounds like it's on the verge of feedback at times which creates an interesting timbre that also cuts through the mix very well. Nice little chill section before the solo mixes things up and introduces dynamics and the post-solo part before the final chorus is cool aswell. Not a ground-breaking track but there's definitely a lot to enjoy about it.
Listening to this one last time while writing up, yeah I definitely dig this singer, I almost can't believe that he's Australian. :lol
(https://i.imgur.com/KUyp8Oq.png) Elite: Semistereo - The Search (Trans Earth Injection)
- Pretty good song, gold star, see you next time.
The good: I like the guitars, it's a nice fuzzy tone for the rhythm and these chords that aren't allowed to ring out really cut through, and the cleans are interesting; it's like the tone is simultaneously bright and dull? Fucked if I know how that works but I do like how it sounds. The bass has a lot of presence overall but especially in the ligher moments (I loves me some bass). Overall this song has great atmosphere in the lighter parts but rocks when it's needed, especially in that latter half. Cool falsetto during the outro.
The vocalist, I'm a bit on the fence about - sounds pretty good in some places but I think he's pushing his limits in others, and overall I wouldn't say his voice is the most appealing I've ever heard. Still, he's not bad per-se. The song could maybe have done with being a bit shorter, but it's not a big deal. I still quite liked this, on par with what you sent last round or maybe even a bit better.
(https://i.imgur.com/x9c3FDJ.png) Puppies_On_Acid: The Thirteenth Sun - Pathways (Stardust)
- Nice chill vibe and not really what I expected given your previous submissions (but that's not a bad thing, if anything I appreciate the variety). I like the active drumming and cymbal work in particular, pretty good sound to this song overall. I think the weakest thing here is when the song gets heavier; the drumming is more bland, the distorted guitar doesn't sound that good in comparison to everything else in this song. But that's just one small section in an otherwise very solid track and it does build into what is a strong outro, so I can't complain too much.
Overall, probably the weakest of the three songs you've sent me but still a solid track. You're definitely maybe almost the guy to beat going into the final two rounds. :tup
(https://i.imgur.com/x9c3FDJ.png) Train of Naught: Arcane Roots - Matter (Melancholia Hymns)
- Some nice variety here which I like. Falsetto vox during verses is an interesting choice but I dig it, especially during this very electronic-driven verse. Infact all of the electronic elements here are pretty good, and I do like fusions of rock/metal with electronica so this seems like a very wise choice for a Bolsters roulette. The song rocks out when necessary and gets a bit heavier and more technical for what is the outro (even though that's only three quarters into the track :lol).
I said I had forgiven strange outros on songs from concept albums in the past, but I still wanted to mention it. I haven't done so yet but it really makes me want to hear the next track on this album because I like the direction it's going. It is rather annoying when bands choose to do this though...I mean, this part clearly does not belong to this song you've sent me, so why isn't it part of the next track or a track unto itself? I don't understand the choice to have the lead-up and essentially the intro to Song B tacked onto the end of Song A. I guess it doesn't matter when you listen to the album as a whole, but it's still mildly irritating. :lol
(https://i.imgur.com/CglH4lS.png) home: Nothing More - Fade In / Fade Out (The Stories We Tell Ourselves)
- This is a pretty solid alternative ballad, but as much as I like it I can't really rank it higher than this. Still, it's your best song so far.
I like a good ballad that still has some power and heaviness to it, and this track does that well. The bass sound is good, plenty of heft in the low end and there's some little licks going into the higher registers that I like. There's a cool slightly more aggressive bit near the halfway mark before everything strips away that I like. The vocalist has a nice voice singing clean and brings some harshness when necessary (it's him in the backing vocals I believe?). I like the delivery and style of "One day you'll remember..." in particular.
On the downside, the mix is a bit muddy and unclear in places. I don't really like the direction the song goes for the outro, it doesn't really fit with the rest of the song in my opinion, I don't like it as much as everything before, and at 6 minutes it probably would have been better off ending sooner instead of taking that little excursion. Still, not huge gripes I guess and I still enjoyed this song, just not enough to rank it over any of the above songs I'm afraid.
(https://i.imgur.com/CglH4lS.png) TAC: Lör - Eidolon (In Forgotten Sleep)
- Well first of all, there was a song Chad sent me in my first roulette where I called the synths "cheesy as absolute fuck" and damn, the casio-keyboard sounding string synth sounds in song are just as cheesy as I remember those in Chad's song sounding. :lol It really put me off when they were very promiment, like that intro; the broken major chord followed by the predictable broken minor played from the top down is probably the prime example. Fortunately they sit in the background for most of the song.
There's some decent riffs and other sections but the song kind of jumps a bit too much between things maybe, and transitions are either poor or non-existent. It's also, despite that, fairly predictable. I can't say I like the vocalist very much, not horrible but I can't hear anything that makes him stand out either.
I think there's a fair bit to like about this song, it's definitely a style that I'm into...but synth sounds, a somewhat poor mix, an average vocal performance (at best) and maybe a smidge of ADHD all kind of dragged this song down a bit, and so I ended up with a rather middling opinion of it overall.
(https://i.imgur.com/vqCNLDJ.png) Parama: Algiers - The Cycle / The Spiral: Time To Go Down Slowly (The Underside of Power)
- Of course the song that you thought was going to be a hit ends up being your lowest scoring yet. :lol I am a bit mixed on this one actually, because there's definitely some stuff I like. The problem is I just don't like those things enough, and there's things that don't do much for me aswell.
So to start off with the good: I like this loud, playful piano that appears here and there, though it's a shame that the piano sinks into the background so much. The upbeat, walking bass line in the chorus (and a few other parts) is pretty cool too, and it sounds great.
Onto what I don't like? I never could get into this vocal style after all the times I listened to this song. The guitar work is pretty bland and I think the guitar kind of takes over a bit too much, especially the latter half of the song. There's quite a bit of dissonance in this song too, and I think the majority of it doesn't work and sticks out in a bad way. The song also gets really cacophonous in places too, there's just too much unrelated stuff going on, and I think the aforementioned instances of dissonance contrinute to that quite a bit.
I might check out this album, but I haven't really decided yet.
(https://i.imgur.com/vqCNLDJ.png) soupytwist: St. Vincent - Los Ageless (Masseduction)
- I couldn't really get into this song much at all, as is evident from where it ranks. On one hand I don't mind the vocalist here, but instrumentally this song didn't really work for me. It reminds me of Taylor Swift's 2017 album Reputation in a lot of unflattering ways; songs driven by pretty boring and obvious drum machines and sparse instrumentation, just like this. Decent melody now and then, but not enough - I don't mind the chorus in this song and the almost wall-of-sound reverb in the background and the vocalist is singing more interestingly. But yeah, overall this song just wasn't doing it for me all that much I'm afraid.
(https://i.imgur.com/vqCNLDJ.png) Sacul: Nine Inch Nails - Less Than (Add Violence)
- I have to admit I kind of almost feel a bit bad about this ranking. Not because I think the song deserves better (it really doesn't) but because I think that perhaps I should have warned you about my feelings regarding Trent Reznor when you sent this; I am...well, definitely not a fan. :lol
I've heard the odd Nine Inch Nails song over the years, never liked anything about it, and it's because I think that Trent Reznor is the laziest music producer I've ever heard. I don't have anything against drum machines or sequenced drumming, but when it's plainly obvious that the producer hasn't done even the bare minimum to make their beats interesting, it annoys me. Reznor doesn't alter velocities to make beats or introduce any other humanisation, and his beats (at least the ones I've heard) lack any kind of groove or flair; they're just extremely stock, plain beats. The songs I've heard in the past all had the same drum sounds, mixed the same way (if I had to guess, I'd say that's because he simply does not mix anything at all) and just flat out boring. Then the overall mixes of these songs just sound like someone recorded everything but didn't actually do anything to mix and improve the sound of what was there. His music sounds like he just makes a simple beat, records a bunch of boring guitar parts, does some pretty plain and flat vocals and then calls that complete. Hurt is about the only decent NIN song I've heard, and even then it's Johnny Cash who elevates that song to greatness and not Reznor himself.
So, this song. I was kind of curious about this one because while I don't remember what songs I've heard in the past, I'd be surprised if any of it was post-2005 or thereabouts. So I haven't heard anything from him in quite a few years. Would this be the same? Well I will admit that it's better than I was expecting, but it still sounds...incredibly lazy.
First, I just plain do not like the mix in this song, it sounds so muffled. Infact the first time I was listening to it, I thought this was an intro technique that I've heard many times before where the song has a lowpass filter applied, cutting out most if not all of the high end. It's something that I hear a bit it electronic but it's also utilised in some rock and metal as well, I don't think I need to provide an example, anyone reading this is probably familiar with what I'm talking about though.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the case here - I was waiting for that moment that fuzz on the distortion of the guitar would appear and cut through, where the cymbals on the drum machine would gain presence and sheen, and for the full spectrum of human hearing range to be present and utilised - I was waiting for the song to come to life, basically...but that never happens here; the entire song is just a muffled mess that makes it sound like I left a jumper hanging over my speakers. I won't deny that sometimes cutting out the high end in a song can create a certain atmosphere that is appealing, but this is a somewhat upbeat track, so it doesn't make sense here. And so I ask myself "Why does the song sound like this?" Well, I think it's because Reznor was too lazy to put in the effort to make it sound any better. Listening to each of the elements of the song, it does not sound like he equalised anything, and so frequencies shared between all of these elements build up and boost each other, mostly in the lower-midrange and make it sound like there's a distinct lack of high end. Basically, he threw all these sounds together with no regard for how they were going to sound together in a mix, and did nothing to improve that once it was put together. He just threw together a drum machine beat, recorded some muddy and unclear guitar chords, threw on a synth or two with some bass and sang over the top of it, the same thing he's been doing for 20+ years now. I'm convinced that the only reason the drum sounds are moderately better than those older Nine Inch Nails songs I've heard is because the quality of drum machine samples and such straight out of the box is much improved from what they sounded like in the 90's, and not because Trent Reznor is doing anything differently at all or has actually honed his craft and improved at all over those 20 years. What little improvement exists is here by accident.
On the songwriting front there wasn't anything offensive here, but nothing really stands out either, pretty uneventful stuff. Didn't like this song all that much, and it's doubtful that I will check out this or any other Nine Inch Nails albums in the forseeable future. :\

This brings us past the half-way mark, with only two rounds remaining, and literally every single one of you is still in the running. :o

Cool, glad you liked that! Fair assessment of the song as well :)
Now the big question is (even though you say everybody's still in the running) of course: what's worth more? two silvers or a gold and a bronze..

Dude, I totally feel you on that transition on the end. To make it worse, this was the first real single leading up to the release of the album, so the first taste ended on a 1 minute transition into a song we couldn't hear for months. :lol
Technically, Curtains was the lead single as it got released a year earlier, but it wasn't sure it was gonna be on the album yet. I think you'll like the album though, lots of those electronic passages

I agree with you on this. I knew I should have changed it! As I said when I send you this with my round 2 selection, I got called away and had to make the choices quickly. - Well first of all, this song blows...
Huh..I thought you'd like that. It's one of my favorite 2017 tracks.
Anyway, sent for Round 4. Hopefully this track has a little more...um...buzz.
-
That's fair, and I agree that the production on that track is muddy - shit's compressed to hell and for no good reason really. I think he's been purposely making his albums sound bad so people have to buy the vinyl version so get better SQ version. About the beats, they aren't any special on that track yeah, sent it because it's a banger but I just love NIN's style a lot :P - was thinking of sending This Isn't the Place as it's a very atmospheric, moody track but when with this instead. His production work can be very good tho, on Hesitation Marks he went synthpop and did lots of very cool things with beats and stuff, only a handful of tracks being any straightforward.
Time to send another pink star contender :metal

So I was planning on doing the results for this round tomorrow afternoon but something has come up, so I'll be doing it Sunday instead. I am sorry that the last couple of rounds have really dragged, but I'm confident that the final round will go uninterrupted (hopefully).
This round is actually very consistent, perhaps the most consistent round so far, and I will definitely regret having to give some of these songs pink/bronze stars.
-
I'll regret having to get a pink star. Again.

i'm incredibly excited for my upcoming pink star :corn

- After a rocky previous round you've made quite the comeback. :lol
I really appreciate what the orchestra does for this song, those big, intermittent string chords in the chorus give some real sonic depth, and I like how the brass instrumentation appears for the last few bars of a verse to lead up to said choruses. But instrumentally the piano is my favourite element, from the bouncy rhythms of the chorus to the acending runs in the second verse, the piano is the life of the song and what holds it all together.
The vocals are strong too of course, standout parts being the chorus itself, the melody on the last line of the chorus and the way it starts ahead of the beginning of the bar, and the interplay between her and the brass and guitar during the post-second chorus section.
Definitely a strong entry and one that puts you back in good standing in terms of score as we go into the final round.
(https://i.imgur.com/KUyp8Oq.png) Parama: Shade Empire - Anti-Life Saviour (Poetry of the Ill-Minded)
- I don't listen to much black metal and I'm sure there's plenty of symphonic black metal that might be as good as this, but if there is then I don't think that I've heard it.
Firstly, this is the kind of black metal that I can get into. There's plenty of dynamic shifts between sections so it isn't full-on the entire time and has plenty of variety and atmosphere, it isn't overly repetitive, the vocals aren't horrible (actually don't mind the styles in this song at all), and the production doesn't suck (which is rather important).
I think the mix is pretty damn good too, they made sure when mixing that it wasn't so compressed that the guitars and drums in particular during the heavier black metal sections wouldn't just drown out the strings completely. I feel that's something they had to be careful not to do because this sort of music often pushes the limits of volume and ends up lacking dynamics, if it were a typical production and the string sections added to it, they'd just be this annoying high-pitched background noise for the majority of the song, and thankfully that doesn't happen here.
But the song itself is really strong structually too. The string sections really elevate what would be just a decent and maybe even somewhat generic black metal track to something much greater, and the extended instrumental sections in the second half of the song with clean guitars give the song a lot of varying dynamics. I like the subdued vocals here too and that they're still very much black metal style vocals despite that subdued sound, and there's some cool textures created with the vocoder. The buildup towards the climax is pretty great too, I like that the lower register string instruments are brought in here to add depth before the metal kicks back in.
Yeah, this is pretty cool overall, you've done well so I can't wait to find out if you fuck it all up next round. :corn
(https://i.imgur.com/x9c3FDJ.png) home: Manchester Orchestra - The Grocery (A Black Mile to the Surface)
- I think you've struggled more than anyone else so far, so I'm really glad that you were able to send something great this time. :tup
I like the thick texture in the chorus of this song, with a fuzzy almost post-rock sound to it and non-verbal (until later) vocals but it's contrasted well with the verses which contain and are driven by the singer and drummer, with this almost cheerful-sounding acoustic guitar providing the tone despite being less prominent. Strong vocal performance and great overall atmosphere to this song, and definitely a really good pick.
(https://i.imgur.com/x9c3FDJ.png) Puppies_On_Acid: Paramore - Rose-Colored Boy (After Laughter)
- I actually received a Paramore song in my first roulette, but it looks like I listened to that album once and then never followed up with this band. I actually liked that song (That's What You Get) and I was curious to see how this would compare.
This definitely leans more towards the pop elements of their sound, but there's still some prominent guitar, I like the mostly melodic almost-lead-playing sound in the verses juxtaposing the fuller chords played in the chorus that flesh the sound out more. There's some cool little interplay between the guitar and synths in places as well, giving the song a playful sort of tone that I like. Vocally a strong song too, catchy melodies and very rhythmic at times too.
Certainly a song that was destined to do well with me, it's just not another round-winning song. :tup
(https://i.imgur.com/CglH4lS.png)TAC: Horisont - The Hive (About Time)
- You know, if you'd sent me this in a normal roulette I'd probably have thought this was from the late 70's or something; they have nailed not just nailed the style of 70's rock but also the production.
Verses are cool, I like the prominent hi-hats and bright organ sounds. Chorus is nice too, I like the retro guitar work and the high-register vocals. I almost can't believe that this is from 2017. :lol Pretty good instrumental section that gives me Zepp/Purple vibes.
I think my only real gripe is that there's this cool little organ section after the first chorus that I really wish was fleshed out and built on more later in the song, it just appears for a few seconds and then there's only some brief allusions to it here and there.
So this is definitely one of the better things I've gotten from you thus far, and I do wish I could have given you silver for it.
(https://i.imgur.com/CglH4lS.png)Elite: Voyager - Misery is Only Company (Ghost Mile)
- I'm passingly familiar with this band but the few songs I've heard before didn't really do all that much for me. I always thought that the music itself wasn't that bad, if perhaps a bit generic as far as prog metal goes, but it was always the singer that really put me off this band. There's just always been something about his pronunciation and/or his accent that rubbed me the wrong way.
Now, this song is slightly different. While there are still moments I can hear that accent cut through, it does not seem to be as thick, at least not enough to bother me anymore, and there are more areas where I actually don't mind this guy. So I think he's either improved from the last songs I've heard or you just lucked out and picked the least offensive song you could have. :lol
I still get the generic prog vibe from this song for the mostpart, but this song has an excellent chorus and I think that alone might be the biggest reason this song was enjoyable, the ascending vocal melody really stands and is very catchy, and I find myself liking it despite the incredibly obvious autotune. It's also less riff-centric which is in contrast to the verses where the guitar and drums are busier.
Yeah, not a bad song at all, although it's a bit of a shame you have to receive bronze.
(https://i.imgur.com/vqCNLDJ.png) jingle.boy: Harem Scarem - No Regrets (United)
- I think the risky thing about sending AOR like this is that it is often accompanied by that feeling of "been there, done that" and I definitely get that from this song. While it ticks a lot of the boxes in the good by being catchy, energetic, and strong memorable melodies, it does sound a hell of a lot like most other AOR I've heard. This was an enjoyable track and not a bad choice at all, I just didn't find much about it that made it stand out against a handful of the other songs this round. I'd have liked to have given this song a bronze star at the very least, infact it is comparable to that other bronze star song you sent, but I couldn't give you better that pink in this round, unfortunately.
(https://i.imgur.com/vqCNLDJ.png) Train of Naught: Nothing But Thieves - I Was Just a Kid (Broken Machine)
- I liked a few things about this one but overall not much stood out in this save the chorus and a few other brief moments, and this is definitely better than a lot of the other rounds' pink star songs, but in this round you'll have to settle for that.
So, my favourite parts are the really light "something to believe in" part before the chorus, I'm not sure what this high register synth is exactly but I like the airy texture to it, and it works quite well filling out the sound. The chorus is okay too, if not anything particularly special either.
(https://i.imgur.com/vqCNLDJ.png) Sacul: Converge - The Dusk in Us (The Dusk in Us)
- I had some pretty mixed feelings to this song. On one hand there's some nice building up and cool atmosphere in the parts of the song with more sparse arrangement...but there were a few things that didn't appeal to me all that much as well, and there was a lack of anything that really made this song stand out in addition.
The vocalist for example basically whispers during the verses which adds to the song's atmosphere, but when things get heavier he either maintains this really monotone, dull style or goes with a rather unappealing screamy style. I think the production of this song brings it down a touch too; once again it works decently for those verses but the chorus is muddy and compressed and in the first verse the vocals seem to be mixed far too low, like the level was adjusted for the verses and not increased for the much louder chorus.
I wouldn't say this is a bad song per se but I failed to really get exicted by it, so it's the type of submission where I'll probably check out the album still but that I can't really rank all that highly.
Let's see if I can get this final round knocked out a little quicker, shall we? Send your songs when you can.

There's just always been something about his pronunciation and/or his accent that rubbed me the wrong way.
Same :lol it's really weird
-
There's also potential for a tie for first place happening at the end of Round 5, so I might outline what will happen in that event now.
Essentially, those players tied for first place will each send me three songs. It can be three songs from the same artist, two artists, or a song from each of three different artists - but you are still limited to music from 2017. This will not be an EP and so I will not take into consideration how well the songs go together, the transitions between them, or anything of the sort. I will probably listen to them all with shuffle turned on, so you pretty much just need to choose three strong tracks.
I will rank these songs and award stars to them like I have been (though with a different distribution), and use that to determine a winner. If there's still a tie after all of this, whoever received the diamond star in the tiebreaker round will win.
I'll link this post in the OP so if anyone needs to reference it again it will be easy to find.

Nothing beats waking up to pink stars :metal
If I wasn't out of the running before I definitely am now, oh well, time to send a risky R5 maybe?

puppies is in first for sure, i'm pretty sure i'm the lowest score still in the running & in the right spot there meaning everyone below me is eliminated & i can only win if puppies & elite both get pink stars while i get diamond (and soupy doesn't get better than like bronze, too)

also i should probably change my song since the one i sent before i dunno if you'd like enough, but on the other hand i didn't know if you'd like this one that much either, so

I second this....for reasons...
-
like anyone picking anything else is doing it wrong; pink stars are irrelevant, we know they're like 1 point or something meager. from the gold star value we can pretty accurate project the diamond and silver star values & then bronze just sits somewhere between silver and pink & is likely not very high in value either
gold star is where it's at
-
Glad that finally someone sent Mastodon :metal (eventhough Bolsters won't care for it)

Considering how the only star you got right in the previous guesses was the one I explicitly told you all the value of, I must disagree with this statement. :lol
-
i mean, if you're gonna be like that, then literally the only possibilities are (assuming that no stars are the same value & that all are worth points, both of which you've said in the past):
Gold - 5
Silver - 4
Bronze - 3
Pink - 2
and diamond is probably just 6, since 7 and 8 were both guessed :corn

considering you said i could win with just diamond, i'm gonna have to assume it's not worth like, a massive amount compared to the rest, & unless you lied to us the other values i just guessed are accurate, so let's go with that; the scores would be:
Puppies: 6 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 18
Elite: 6 + 5 + 3 +3 = 17
soupy: 6 + 5 + 3 + 2 = 16
Parama: 5 + 4 + 4 + 2 = 15
jingle: 6 + 3 + 2 + 2 = 13
Train: 5 + 4 + 2 + 2 = 13
home: 4 + 3 + 2 + 2 = 11

Sacul: 4 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10
This also lines up with this nugget:
But to give you an idea how close it was, you're tied with someone else and the person directly above you both still has a chance.
As well as this nugget:
puppies is in first for sure, i'm pretty sure i'm the lowest score still in the running & in the right spot there meaning everyone below me is eliminated & i can only win if puppies & elite both get pink stars while i get diamond (and soupy doesn't get better than like bronze, too)
am i close? :corn
Reasonably. You could get ahead with just gold, though.
Though that does make me curious as to what "ahead" means, because at most I could tie puppies with a gold star, if he got pink:
18 + 2 = 20
15 + 5 = 20
Note that this is irrelevant of the value of the pink star, because I'm at 14 and he's at 18 if it's only worth 1 point. And 18 + 1 = 14 + 5 = 19 anyways :lol
Besides that tiny inconsistency that could just be a phrasing thing everything else about this lines up, so I'm pretty confident :corn

(https://i.imgur.com/1kwOtAM.png) Elite: Perihelion Ship - The Sad Mountain (To Paint a Bird of Fire)
- Something you tend to do quite often in my roulettes is send me stuff like this. It's a style/genre I've heard a lot from and that submissions can generally be described as "good but not great" - but you have a tendancy to pick out things that either have a modicum of originality, or just have a really great sound to them, and occasionally something with both, which this song is.
I mean let's face it, hammond organs and mellotrons are pretty overdone, but I can't honestly say I've heard many songs that contain both - but then in this song they both get utilised simultaneously. The result is that the sound in the chorus is quite familiar but refreshing at the same time, as the organ and mellotron sounds play off of each other and blend together to make something pretty original sounding.
Add to that some pretty cool riffage from both the guitarist and keyboard player, some often busy but not overcomplicated drumming, and excellent use of dynamics...yeah, this pretty good stuff. My only real gripes are that the vocalist's clean style is maybe not the best but he's not exactly bad, and does pretty well when going harsh. I can't think of much else to complain about really, this is just the good stuff.
(https://i.imgur.com/KUyp8Oq.png) jingle.boy: Vandroya - Beyond The Human Mind (Beyond The Human Mind)
- So, this was a top 5 song of last year did you say? You might have been better off sending your top stuff (that wasn't already banned) than trying to send something you thought was similar to one of my favourite albums from last year (Masqued).
So there's no surprises in this song, but it ticks a lot of boxes on the "good" side, and everything is executed well. A pretty good female vox performance? Check. Plenty of orchestral and piano for depth and variety? Check. Epic? Check. Catchy? Definitely a check. I'm also glad that this song doesn't get too carried away with really long instrumental sections.
I know you had a harder time in this roulette than my last, I'm not sure if that was the 2017 restriction or not. This song is basically what I expected to get from you. But, what took you so long? :lol
(https://i.imgur.com/x9c3FDJ.png) Puppies_On_Acid: White Ward - Homecoming (Futility Report)
- Well if there's one thing you can take away from this roulette (whether you won or not), you were by far the most consistent player, as you are the only person who scored silver or better in every round. This song continues your legacy of sending consistently good shit, once again appealing to most of the things I like in this genre and avoiding the more egregious elements. More saxaphone too, so I think you've been taking note of what I liked about other tracks, which has served you well.
I think the only reason this didn't rank higher than Elite's submission this round is that the vocal style, while not unappealing, has no variety to it and is fairly guttural. The sound gets a bit cacophanous at times too, like there's a bit too much happening at once and certain frequencies overwhelm the mix temporarily. But there's still good dynamic shifts and this outro is pretty great (everything from the piano onwards). Pretty good stuff even if I have a couple gripes and even if I probably like your previous silver-awarded songs more.
(https://i.imgur.com/x9c3FDJ.png) TAC: Cřnstantine - In Fading Light (Esthesia)
- While this is perhaps another song that is not breaking the mold in any way, it's saved by a few elements that elevate it above some of the other stuff you and Chad have been sending me. For one, I really dig this chorus and it wins the unofficial award for "biggest earworm of the round" (which is worth 0 points though I'm afraid). Probably my favourite of the songs you sent (though Horisont isn't too far behind) and finally you get something better than bronze. :tup
(https://i.imgur.com/CglH4lS.png) soupytwist: The War On Drugs - Pain (A Deeper Understanding)
- I can definitely see why you'd send this to someone who listens to Dire Straits based on several things though most of all the vocals, but fortunately for you I quite liked the somewhat dreampop-like sound of this song, so even though you get bronze (and miss out on Catching 'em All) I did think this was a pretty alright track and to be honest, I can't really find much to complain about - I guess it just doesn't have that something extra to make me want to rank it above too many of the songs this round.
(https://i.imgur.com/CglH4lS.png) home: Mastodon - Roots Remain (Emperor of Sand)
- Mastodon happens to be the third artist I received here that was also sent in my first roulette. That song was The Motherload, sent by Sacul, and it wasn't exactly my favourite song from that roulette. :lol I knew they had a new album out last year and that it was reasonably well-received on this forum (judging by the Top 5 Albums of the year thread) so I knew I'd be getting Mastodon again, and was curious about how the band had evolved.
Well you've already seen which star you got for this song so it's no mystery that I didn't love it, but I didn't mind it at all actually, and it was a pleasant surprise because I must admit I went into this with low expectations, which you managed to thankfully surpass.
The first thing that stands out is that there's more to differentiate the verses and choruses in this song than The Motherload, which was extremely same-y. The verses here go at a faster pace and rely on riffs more, but the chorus goes for lighter drumming, broken chords on the guitar, and higher register vocals. But the chorus takes second place to the instrumental section which is actually quite good and gives the song some dynamic variance.
Overall a very decent song that I am glad was able to remove my biases against the band, and I look forward to checking out the album now.
(https://i.imgur.com/vqCNLDJ.png) Parama: Venenum - Trance of Death - Part III: There Are Other Worlds... (Trance of Death)
- This was this round's "mixed bag" song, in the sense that it has things I genuinely enjoy but there's a lot of stuff that I don't really like all that much. And yeah, probably more on the not liking side since this is down at pink-level.
So, I don't mind the intro at all but then it leads into a section that does not appeal to me at all. I'm no into this breathy, almost spoken word harsh vocal style here. I'm not into the thrashy, blastbeat stuff either. Thankfully the song chills out and there's a slower paced section which I actually quite liked, there's more interesting riffing and melody and the drumming is better. The second solo section is decent enough too.
Once we get to around 10 minutes though the song gets extremely repetitive. On one hand I like the sound of this section, but on the other it just gets dragged out for way too long and the blastbeats ruin it towards the end anyway. So while I dig some things about this song there's a lot of elements that I don't like and it is just far too long, to be honest I looked forward to hearing this song the least every time I sat down to listen to these nine songs.
You were lined up for bronze early in the round but other songs started to grow on me, and you ended up here. Good thing you hate winning I guess.
(https://i.imgur.com/vqCNLDJ.png) Sacul: David Bowie - Killing A Little Time (No Plan EP)
- Well you kind of expected this so I won't feel too bad about it, though I wouldn't go so far as to say "hate" regarding this song. I like the sound for one, the prominent bass and thud of the kick give the song a powerful low end that works in contrast to the vocals and cymbals.
The downside? The song is pretty repetitive, in particular that one particular drum beat that underlines the vast majority of the song, but the guitar grated on me quite a bit as well. The song unfortunately seems like it goes for a lot longer than it actually does as a result.
(https://i.imgur.com/vqCNLDJ.png) Train of Naught: Zeal & Ardor - Come On Down (Devil is Fine)
- Turns out Parama was right about something. (https://i.imgur.com/xXwPDs6.png) There were some decent little guitar moments here and there (1:04 to 1:36 is an example) but a lot of the other stuff didn't really sit all that well with me. The drumming is pretty boring and I don't like the vocal effects and constant repetition of the title of the song, and that huge scream might have worked going into a climax of some sort but the repetition of it diminishes any impact it could have had. This is definitely not one of the better things you've sent in this roulette I'm afraid.

by my math elite wins, which makes this his third roulette win in a row :lol
i probably should've changed my entry to red oak tree by hacride but i wouldn't have won regardless with how much you liked both elite's and puppies' songs, so no real loss

Yes, as everyone would have already guessed, the winner of this roulette is Elite! Although you probably had far less to choose from than the other participants because of the crossover in our tastes, that same crossover apparently means that what was left over was also appealing to me, and you did a better job than anyone else. So congrats on your third win in a row! :eek
I'll also give a shout-out to the Pupster, a newcomer who didn't play in either of my previous roulettes but did very well here all the same, leading or being tied for the lead right up until the very end, and was also the most consistent player, never scoring lower than silver. :tup
Well, I suppose everyone wants to know what those stars were worth this time. Parama was very close but I tricked him by doing something I've never done before: I used half-points. (https://i.imgur.com/xXwPDs6.png)
That makes the final standings look something like this:

Like last time, I also made a best-of playlist, though this time I've just put them all in alphabetically instead of trying to put them in any kind of logical order.

Funny thing is, I was going to send that exact track by Perihelion Ship, but I could have sworn I saw that album in your banned list (apparently I didn't look at it hard enough), so I went with White Ward instead. Anyways, congrats to Elite! :tup
Also, Perihelion Ship's first album is superior, imo. :metal
-
the gap between pink and diamond was really narrow, huh :lol

I did say I wanted this one to be easier to catch up in, since there were only five rounds.

this is the best i've ever done in any of your roulettes, regardless :corn

By far.
Funnily enough I found that Shade Empire album saved in Spotify earlier today, given how far down it was it'd been there a while, so good thing for you I never actually got around to listening to it. :corn

..and so ends my first roulette.
I really enjoyed it, thanks Bolsters - and Congrats to Elite.

Whaa :o
I did not expect to wake up to this, honestly. Thanks for the Star Trophy; the third time of playing it worked out :)

That certainly seemed the case, yes. I didn't think my final entry would actually take the win, but I'm glad it did nonetheless. It's a good track from a good album. Thanks for having me! Your roulettes are always fun to play in and the scoring system really makes it exciting until the end. I'll catch up with what all the others have sent through your Diamond Playlist and I guess there will be stuff in there that's appealing to me as well.
Thanks for the excellent hosting!

You know, I had this track saved for the final round for some reason. If you had sent it in a previous round, I would have been screwed with not a whole lot of stuff as a 'back-up'. And yes, their first album is better, but that one's not from 2017 :P

Glad you enjoyed. Yeah, that Masqued decision was clearly the wrong one. As for my other pink star... I was just trying to mix things up a bit. I'm happy with 4th here, and glad I was able to give you a couple that ranked well.
Nicely run Roulette here Dave. :tup

Thanks for hosting this! ;D
I think our tastes aren't that well of a match, given most of my top 20 albums of last year aren't on your banned list, but I didn't really focus on similiarites anyway. Rather I just sent some of my favourites, glad you at least like Manchester Orchestra :D
-
I do intend to check out all five of the albums your submissions were from, maybe I'll find more to like in them.
This is actually the list of albums I will listen to as a result of the roulette...it's almost all of them. :lol 37 out of 44.

Even my two pink's get a 'check-it-out' rating! :tup
I'd be interested in a follow up (eventually) on what were the top 10 albums. Sometimes, a mediocre song can come from an absolutely killer album, or vice-versa... even a crappy album can have a gem or two buried in the sea of filth.

proud to be responsible for 2 of the 7 you hated :lol

Nice, don't forget about adding Hesitation Marks :P
