Title: G3
Post by: bosk1 on December 29, 2017, 12:19:24 PM
There isn't a thread on this, and I'm not sure where I saw it posted when it was announced a few months ago.  Anyway, for those who might have missed it, the lineup this year is Joe Satriani (of course), John Petrucci, Phil Collen (European leg has Uli Jon Roth in place of Phil).  U.S. let kicks off in Seattle January 11.  https://www.satriani.com/G3/

Anyone going?  I will likely be at the 1/13 show.

My sister bought her husband tickets to the Seattle show. There was talk of me going but it isn't really my thing and my sister kind wanted to go too - she got him two tickets and wasn't clear that the intention was for the two of them to go, not for him to take a buddy.

They are performing on Valentine's Day in DC, and before I got a chance to ask JP if he could change the date  ;) when I met him before the Balto show, he had to leave.

Philly is a possibility the following Saturday, unless I feel like driving up to Battle Creek MI that night instead  :lol

???  You don't want to spend Valentine's Day with John Petrucci?  Does not compute...  (although I can see how some might lean more toward wanting to spend it with shirtless, oiled up Phil Collen instead)

If it includes Kip Winger and JP, for me it's a yes.

Thinking about tickets for the Pittsburgh show, pretty pricey though, looks like more than what I paid to see DT in the same venue a couple months ago.

So, enlighten me a bit.  How does these G3 tours work?  Is it mainly them doing covers of their most respective work?  Is there a backing band handpicked by Satriani?  Do these guitarists play together and do some other covers and improvisation and jams?

Each guitarist gets a set with a backing band (each guitar player brings their own backing band). Typically, the guitarists that play these tours have original instrumental music of their own to play. Not sure if Phil does or not. But JP will play stuff from SA and a couple new solo songs he’s written, and JS has a huge catalog of stuff to pick from.

So each player does their own set with their own backing band, and then the encore is all three guitarists coming out together and jamming on a couple popular cover songs, with the backing musicians cycling in and out. They do stuff everyone knows, like Hendrix, Deep Purple, etc...

^Yeah, that.  And for the encores, they extend the solo and basically turn them into huge extended solo jams where all three guitarists trade off and go crazy.  For example:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oj9zdyqs1-0

I'm going to the January 16th show. I was going to skip it at first because Phil Collin doesn't really capture my imagination but I can't pass up Satch and JP. Besides, Mrs. P really wants to go (probably to watch me geek out).

As the day gets closer, I'm actually wondering what Collin has up his sleeve, considering the company he'll be with. It could be interesting.

I was all set to buy tickets for Wallingford CT on 2/8 but that changed when Marillion decided to come to the states and the closest show to Connecticut was Pittsburgh. So I opted to buy tickets for that instead and make it an overnight road trip.

Still...it could wind up being a game time decision to still go to G3 in CT.

I got tickets for the Austin show. Not sure if I’m going to dtay for the full Collen and Satch sets. Will probably see the Satch seist before deciding.

This would be my 2nd time seeing G3 with JP. I first saw him in 2001 in Denver. I was a college student back then and drove 12 hours from El Paso, TX to Denver and drove back after the show straight to work. I probably took 5 yrs out of my life in doing that.

Not sure if this means anything, but when it came up at our family Christmas, only my sister, her husband, and I knew who any of these guys are. But my 70 year old mom wanted to make it very clear she knew who Def Leppard was and was surprised my dad didn't. In fairness to my mom, they were my favorite band in the late 80s.

I think Phil Collen is an interesting addition. He has a bluesy project called Delta Deep. Not something you'd expect from him.

Interesting G3 lineup.

I've gone to a G3 show years ago with the lineup of Satriani - Petrucci - Gilbert. It was a great show but I left around the 3 hour mark into Satriani's set. It was just too much weedly weedly for my ears. :lol

I'd go again only if Guthrie Govan ended up on the bill.

So...tour starts tomorrow.  Been listening to Suspended Animation to get ready.  I had forgotten how good some of those songs are.  It reminds me of a good mix of LTE and Satch, which isn't a bad thing.  I just don't listen to guitar-based instrumental music all that much or I would listen more.

Bosk, if you get to talk to JP at the show you're going, would you mind asking him if he plans to finally record his 2nd solo album this year? I really like the 3 new songs he played in 2012, but all we have are bad quality audience recordings on youtube.

Sure.  And while I don't know anything at this point, I would think the odds might be decent since he likes working with Mangini on the solo stuff, and he has easy access to Mangini now.  And he also is not busy with DT stuff for the next little bit.  So, it is certainly possible.

If you wanna know who John's backing band is (small font for those who may not want spoilers):

Dave LaRue and Mike Mangini.  Not surprising, but a good fit, IMO.

Has JP ever toured with a different bassist on G3.

The same guy played for JP when I saw G3 over 10 years ago.

Post by: bosk1 on January 11, 2018, 12:05:10 PM
I know JP has been on G3 six times, but I don't know who played bass for him on all those tours.  LaRue would make sense though.  He has a strong prog/fusion pedigree, having played with Dixie Dregs since '88.  He has done projects with Petrucci, Rudess, Portnoy, and Sherinian, so he is VERY connected to the members of DT.  He has also worked with Satriani and with Steve Morse, so he is well-connected with G3 members even outside of Petrucci.

I'm not familiar with most of what he has done, but I like his playing that I have heard.  I met him briefly when his solo band did an opening slot in a tiny place up here a year or two ago.  Seems like a nice guy, although he wasn't very talkative at the time.  I joked that I was disappointed there was no Blue Ocean in the set, and he laughed.

Honestly, I mostly know him from Flying Colors, and various youtube things, and the dude is still impressive enough that he's one of my favorites. Something about his general style just really speaks to me in a way that most bassists' don't.

I’ve seen videos someone posted on youtube, I’m on my phone right now and can’t link them, but just search G3 2018 on youtube and you’ll find them.

JP opened the set with (SPOILERS)... The Wonder Woman theme (Hans Zimmer), it sounded amazing  :metal
Then, he played Jaws of Life, Glasgow Kiss, Glassy-Eted Zombies and Cloud Ten, don’t know in which order, though.

The Reno show was REALLY good.  The only real downside was that it was one of the loudest shows I have ever been to, and the kick drum out loud volume had a tendency to cause the guitars to overdistort and blur together, so the mix sounded VERY muddy at times.  Phil Collen had the best mix.  JP's was very muddy at first, but got better through his set.  Satch's mix was a mess, honestly.  I couldn't hear his backup guitarist at all most of the time, and there were plenty of times I couldn't even tell what Joe was playing.  And that is even with ear plugs to deaden the volume a bit (and thank goodness I had them--it would have literally been painful if I hadn't had them).

Phil Collen's set was surprisingly good.  His band has a CD that is going to be released.  JP had an advance copy Phil gave him, which he showed me.  Phil's band was really fun and talented.  I enjoyed his set more than I thought I would.

JP's set was tight, and had a good selection.  It started off pretty dark and heavy, which was a nice contrast to the other two sets.  The Wonder Woman instrumental to start it off was really cool.  He was pretty proud of that one.  He told me afterward that when he saw the film, the soundtrack and score immediately jumped out to him, and he thought to himself that he just HAD TO take that main them and do a heavy guitar version of it, which is what led to him working it up for G3.  Interestingly, Glasgow Kiss has probably been my least favorite from Suspended Animation, but I really enjoyed it here.

Satch was Satch.  I enjoyed it for what it was.  But honestly, I was just waiting for the jam.  And, man, the jam was REALLY fun.  I loved the selections.  And using the singer from Phil's group was perfect and really made them feel like complete songs rather than just a familiar backing track for these guys to solo over.  That really gave it a different vibe from past G3 jams, and it was a welcome change.

I'm still debating whether or not to see them in Toronto next month. I've seen two G3's: Satch/Eric Johnson/Petrucci (John had MP in his band, and he completely stole the show!) and Satch/Steve Morse/Petrucci.

I should have seen them a third time, with Satch/Fripp/Vai, but got stuck at work on the day of the concert.

We were there as well.  I really like that venue.  Where were you guys?  We were fifth row (row E), in the right hand block of seats just on the right side of the aisle (pretty much right in front of JP during his set).

EDIT:  Also, I have to say: I didn't pick up or listen to Suspended Animation when it came out, so I was pretty out of the loop on this album for the longest time.  But it is probably one of my favorite guitar instrumental albums, along with Shift by Travis Larson Band.  (I also really like Rodrigo Y Gabriela's stuff, but that is such a different style that I don't really put it in the same discussion)  Damage Control is just SO good.

We were in the 3rd row, on the right, the inboard aisle seats. (wish we were on the other side, but great none the less) I was clapping so much during JP, then I got the point, and nod from him (really, my hubby saw lol!) and made the night even better :). It was so fun. What was really great is that my hubby, who likes a little "happier" rock than I do, really loved the show. And my 19 y/o son, who likes the heavier stuff and just started the guitar about 3 years ago, said "well, that was eye opening".  A great family night out lol! Poor guys, I drown them in DT all-the-time. I love that venue. I don't notice the musical issues that you do, so for me loud, close and comfy seats were awesome. I have never really gotten into instrumental only stuff, but I have to say JP's guitar playing is changing my mind. Somehow it does a great job of filing in for the missing vocals. I will definitely be checking out more of this music.

I have seen Fripp opening for G3 and PT. WTF made anyone think a rock crowd would want to listen to an ancient dude playing "soundscapes" or whatever the fuck it was? Certainly at the G3 show, the crowd gave him a pretty hard time.

Can't remember where you are located.  But if you are in the Sacramento area, you might be interested in this event later tonight:  https://shinesacramento.com/events/

Travis is an AWESOME instrumental guitar player, and the shows at Shine are a nice experience.  And it is an all ages show.

Suspended Animation is really fantastic, honestly the strength of that album is what makes me wish JP would release something else, even an EP or something would be cool.

Wow. The new songs JP is playing are monstrous. What's with the intro Wrath of the Amazons (According to setlist.fm). Is that an unreleased JP songs or is that a cover from someone else? My wife joined me and had couple of interesting comments about JP: a) the intro was cheesy for her and b) she thinks JP is the "darkest, heaviest" of the 3 guitarists, which was true. JP's tone was heavy AF (which I loved).

Another interesting comment from her was that Keneally looks like your typical old husband that walks everywhere with the wife  :rollin But the guy can sure play. She was very impressed when MK played guitar on one hand and the keys with the other.

You know there's a saying that kids and drunks are the only people who tell you the truth. I would add a "prog fan's wire" to that list.

Good show in CT last night. I applaud Phil Collin for being ambitious and being part of this tour but it was obvious he was not the reason for the turnout. He had an ok reception after he finished. I enjoyed his set. It didn't exceed any expectation, its pretty much what I expected going in.
JP got a standing O which was nice.
I bolted out on the very last number with all 3 guys in favor of not being stuck in gridlock leaving the venue so I don't know what the final response was.
To me, this was a nice show but not a must see event. I had a good time so that's what counts.

My trip to Pittsburgh to see Marillion next Tuesday is what I'm really jacked for. That will be a nice little road trip.

I'm totally not understanding the whole "not selling Suspended Animation CDs at the gig".

I mean, there must be a reason.  To the outsiders like myself who don't know how things work it makes no sense.  Say you've never heard JP before (shocking, I know), and he just rocked your world live, and you can't get the songs legitimately?  It's not even available digitally (iTunes) but the "Evening With" is.

I understand (sort of) not trucking thousands of CDs around with you, but a few small boxes would be great, even people that own it would probably buy it if they were doing a meet&greet and get it signed.  But to not even have it available digitally really baffles me.

Can someone ask JP why he's not or can't sell that CD any more?  Even just to have a real reason as to why, I'm sure many of us would like to understand.

I know it's out of print but I"m curious as to how difficult it'd be to get a small batch of cd's ready for the gig. I also don't understand why he wouldn't sell the cd.

Strongly considering going to G3 in Chicago next week. Not really a fan of watching guitarists be guitarists though. I literally only want to go to pick up a copy of Suspended Animation. I'll update in a couple days if I'm going for sure or not, but I'd be more than happy to pick up CDs if they still have some.

Generally speaking, I feel the same way.  And with Satriani specifically, I simultaneously am in awe of what he is doing on the guitar, along with the skill and sense of melody he brings, while also being completely bored to tears.  But I still think it is worth going, for a few reasons:  First, Phil Collen's set is really fun and different.  Second, Petrucci is a joy to watch, and the heavier, darker vibe he brings to the table is different than the typical guitar instrumentalist.  Along those lines, at least for now, G3 is the ONLY opportunity you will have to hear Wrath of the Amazons and Glassy-Eyed Zombies, both of which are pretty fun songs.  Third, the encore jam is SO much fun!

Ehhhh. I dunno. I'm just not into it. I don't care about Phil Collen, and Satch being Satch is not something that sounds very exciting or interesting. The new Petrucci stuff would be cool (WOTA is just the Wonder Woman thing right...?), but I kid you not, it's just the sale of the album that's drawing me. If I could just get it online I would, but SOMEONE won't get more copies printed... or release that second album that's been on the table for over 10 years :) :)

Probably. If the CD isn't there then fuck it I guess I'll stay. Is the order static? If JP isn't playing first, I don't want to sit through Collen and/or Satch. I. literally. only want the CD and I can't get it anywhere, so... yeah. Don't judge me.
Title: Re: G3
Post by: bosk1 on February 14, 2018, 02:01:01 PM
Is the order static?

Yes.  JP is in the #2 spot.  I've said my piece, so you can do what you want and I won't judge.   But I'll just add:  Collen's set isn't what you might expect given his work in Def Leppard or what you might expect at a G3 show.  Most of his relatively short set is comprised of blues-based hard rock with either him or a female singer doing the vocals (and BOTH are really good singers).  She also does the vocals on Highway Star, Superstitious, and Goin' Down during the encore jam, and she rips it up!

But there.  I've said my piece.  I'm done.  Either way, enjoy.  :)

EDIT:  Okay, one LAST pitch for JP's set:
1.  WOTA is at 32:06 here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dw2bn1Q5ZYE  Do yourself a favor and at least check it out.  Seriously.  (First bit is basically intro.  It doesn't REALLY start until about 34:10)
2.  He also plays Cloud Ten, which I had forgotten is not on Suspended Animation either.  So going to that show, you actually get THREE unlreased songs.

Okay, now I'm done for real.
Title: Re: G3
Post by: The Walrus on February 14, 2018, 03:20:19 PM
bosk, have you ever been called persistent before?  :lol "Blues-based hard rock" just made my decision to not watch Collen so much easier. Okay, you got me on JP, I'll probably arrive late and watch him. But I want that CD, damn it! That's all that matters!

(I worked for the better part of a decade with two older fellas who missed no opportunity - zero, zilch, nada - to rave about Phil Collen, and I just never got it. I like Def Leppard, but don't give a rat's behind (pardon the language) about watching Phil Collen play solo  :lol)

:lol  I know, I know.  It's just hard to digest that you'll be there and have a ticket, but not even try to see the show.  I'm letting it go now.  :)

But if you DO happen to watch any of Phil's songs in the link above, skip to song #3.  The blues stuff is really cool.  But the first two songs aren't that, and they are the type of stuff you wouldn't want to watch.

This is NOT aimed at Kattoelox, since I said I wasn't talking to him anymore in this thread, but...  :lol   ...man!  Phil's singer was MADE to sing Mistreated.  Their cover is the best version I have ever heard by a HUGE margin.  And Down in the Delta is a pretty fun track too.

If Joe released a DVD of this G3 tour, it is an automatic purchase from me.

I just checked ebay and discogs and all the reasonably priced ones are from, you guessed it, the Russian Federation. Noooope. Not paying for bootlegs. Not chancing it. Everything else is stupidly expensive. $90+. Now one can argue it's the same price as buying a ticket and getting the CD and leaving, but shut up, I'm at least going to watch JP  :lol

Now, if you do have a copy to send me, DO IT! But someone already asked me to pick up a copy for them too, so here we are. This is happening. Ya'll can make fun of me after I come back and Phil Collen played a 20 minute Stevie Ray Vaughn impression entirely with his face and I missed it.  :lol

My recommendation, and you can take it or leave it:  Get there at the start of the show.  Have a drink out in the lobby.  When Phil gets a few songs in and the songs with vocals kick in, if you like what you are hearing, go in and check it out.  If not, stay at the bar and read DTF on your phone.  Then go in and check out JP's set.  Then come back and hang out at the bar during Joe's set.  Go back in for the encore jam.  Thank me/profit.

Yeah, sad that I'm not going (especially since I had splurged for a nice ticket), but it's for a good reason. What started as my aunt and uncle coming up to visit for the weekend from North Carolina has spontaneously turned into a full on family reunion at our house Sunday night. Should be 20 people here.

Bosk is full of wisdom on this page, Firewings.  Wisdom you may even have heard before...   Go see JP, and have fun.  Phil Collen wasn't my cup of tea, but you might like it, so it couldn't hurt to get there in time, buy the last copy of Suspended Animation, see what you think.

Satriani was good.  I'll confess to being a little bored at times during his set (whereas with JP it felt like I blinked and then it was over), but for the most part it was still a good set and I'm glad I caught it.
