Title: Your favorites of these overplayed classic rock songs
Post by: KevShmev on November 18, 2017, 08:17:53 AM
Seems like these songs were always near the top every year back in the day when our local rock radio station did their Rock and Roll 500 every year.  For those of us who used to listen to classic rock radio, these are all songs we have heard a million times. But which ones do you still like the most, after so many listens?

You can vote for up to 5.

I will go with:

Bohemian Rhapsody
Tom Sawyer
Stairway to Heaven
Layla
Gimme Shelter

I am burned out on many of the others.

That poll reads like a track list to one of those compilation CDs they used to advertise constantly on TV in the 90's.

I would not complain if I never heard one of those songs again.

I voted Comfortably Numb, Tom Sawyer and Bohemian Rhapsody.

Some of the option are so damn overplayed that I've come to loathe them. Hotel California is the biggest culprit here. I don't even want to have to listen to that track again.

Bohemian Rhapsody, Stairway to Heaven and You Shook Me All Night Long

The Who. All others are in second place.

I picked, The Who, Rush, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith..
I think Boston - "More Than a Feeling" and YES - "Roundabout" should be on that list.

More Than a Feeling and Purple Haze were the other two I considered including.

Not surprised to see the Doors being the only group to get shut out so far.

HArd to pick my faves. Of that list, I would Tom Sawyer, Smoke on the Water, and Iron Man are the standouts at the bottom. They aren't remotely in my Top 5 or even 10 of favorite songs by their respective bands.

These days I can at least tolerate hearing:

Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long

Won't Get Fooled Again actually makes me mad if it comes on somewhere, I can't stand it anymore. Or, really, any of The Who's hits

Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rush, The Who, and Queen. Arguably my five favorite bands among all of these, so I had to go with their songs. Almost went with "Dream On" though - I don't listen to Aerosmith very often, but I do like that song.

-Marc.

This post makes me mad, but vive la différence. Can American politics be summed up in any more concise lyric than "Meet the new boss same as the old boss?"

Not to derail, but another cool question would be who has seen what songs performed live by the original artists?

I have only seen Comfortably Numb (albeit by Roger, not PF) and the Won't Get Fooled Again by the most recent Roger/Pete tour. The fact that Pete can still do that knee slide thing he does at 70 makes me sad I'm 40 and can't walk up the stairs of my house without losing my breath.

It's pretty accurate, I just think it's an annoying song to begin with  :lol

Queen, Rush, Pink Floyd, Eagles, Led Zeppelin.
Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb is one of my favourites songs ever so... Tom Sawyer is a song that had started my adventure with Rush.... Bohemian Rhapsody ia pure classic, it never get's bored/ Stairway To Heaven are very magical, and have a one of a kind atmosphere... and Hotel California reminds of my younger years and evenings spent in car with my Dad :)

Bohemian Rhapsody is proof that you can write a prog epic in a short song.

Yes, BR is prog.

I have seen Pink Floyd do Comfortably Numb twice... with one year in between
I have seen Deep Purple do Smoke on the Water twice... with 29 years in between
And I have seen Rush do Tom Sawyer once...

Sadly I havent seen any of the others

I've seen Sabbath do Iron Man, The Who (and Pete solo) do Won't Get Fooled Again many times, as well as Tom Sawyer and Comfortably Numb, both multiple times.

Pete's such a fucking gangster, he IS rock and roll.

Bohemian Rhapsody, Aqualung, Comfortably Numb, and Tom Sawyer for sure. The last slot could go to Iron Man, Won't Get Fooled Again, or Smoke on the Water, but I picked Won't Get Fooled Again. I actually didn't realize that some of these are considered overplayed. :lol

The only one of these I actually can't stand is Free Bird, and honestly it's not because it's overplayed.

I went with:

Stairway To Heaven
Freebird
Dream On
Tom Sawyer
Bohemian Rhapsody

Comfortably Numb. I actually actively hate Bohemian Rhapsody, it is far, far and away my least favorite of the options.

I'm the other way; I love all those songs, and about the only one's I'm really tired - and "tired" isn't the right word, it's just that I don't care for them much - are The Doors "Light My Fire", and "Layla".

"Gimme Shelter" is one of my favorite songs of all time by any band ever, and I can listen to it all day long.

In no particular order, I went with:

The Eagles - Hotel California
The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter
Jethro Tull - Aqualung
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Rush - Tom Sawyer
Title: Re: Your favorites of these overplayed classic rock songs

Eagles
Zep
Floyd
Rush
Queen

Hotel California, I could play that song 100 times in a row and never get sick of it.

Bohemian Rhapsody (Easily my favorite of the bunch. Just a badass song. Freddie was a genius.)
Layla (Clapton's greatest work.)
Comfortably Numb (David Gilmour's greatest solo.)
Hotel California (Once again, the solo is what makes this song.)
Stairway to Heaven (It's the most played classic rock song on the radio for a reason.)

This is a hard poll.  I was very much anti-'70s for a LONG time growing up.  Part of that was I just didn't like the overall '70s rock sound and production very much.  Part of it was just misplaced rebellion on my part of getting into '80s hard rock as my first real passion in music.  So songs from the late '60s and '70s, as well as bands from that era that were releasing songs into the '80s that still had that '70s sound, were something I avoided like the plague.  I have since come to appreciate a lot of stuff from that era, although I still have a bias against some of it (more for the sound/production issue than anything else).

I went with the following:
-Smoke on the Water:  I am hot and cold on Purple, just depending on the song.  This one is such a blast to play live with a band that it holds a special place for me.
-Iron Man:  (somehow, I missed and clicked the Stones instead--oops)  This was one of the first hard rock songs I knew and loved.  It is also the first song I learned to play on guitar.  I can't say I was ever really a Sabbath "fan," but their "hits" from the Ozzy era are some of the first hard rock I was exposed to.
-Comfortably Numb:  Probably my favorite song on the list.
-Tom Sawyer:  Not a Rush fan by any stretch.  Not even a little.  But this is one of a handful of songs from them that I really like.
-Bohemian Rhapsody:  The "Wayne's World section" alone earns this song a spot.  This is another band that I am hot and cold on.  I really like some songs.  But I cannot consider myself a fan of the band as a whole, as a lot of their stuff just doesn't connect with me.  But "The Game" was the first album I ever bought in my life, so they will always be a special band for me.  But good song.

Won't Get Fooled Again just missed for me.  It was the next song up and would have gotten chosen if not for the others on the list.  The Who are definitely one of those bands that I wrote off in my younger years that I have come to appreciate much later in life.  Hate to say it, but I owe that to CSI Miami and DT covering their songs, or else I might never have given them a chance.  Hey, whatever it takes, right?  :lol

Rush, Queen, Zep, Sabbath, and Floyd.

Hotel California needs to die in a fire.  Same with Layla.

Of those, I voted

Tom Sawyer
Won't Get Fooled Again
Gimmie Shelter (one of maybe only 5 or 6 Stones songs I really like)
Aqualung
Light My Fire

As far as Light My Fire goes....I just really like the long jam in the middle.   If we're talking about the 3 min radio version, forget it.

Rush - Tom Sawyer
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

I picked

Stairway
Iron Man
Aqualung
Tom Sawyer
Won't Get Fooled Again

It pained me not to include Smoke on the Water or Bohemian Rhapsody, but I couldn't remove any of the others.

I've never been a huge fan of Freebird, but the end of it rocks.
Hotel California is fine, but I would probably call it overrated.
Layla is good, but the ending is boring.
I hate the Doors with a purple passion.
Not a big Stones fan, and Gimme Shelter isn't even one of their songs that I know well.
Dream On is good.  Probably would be #8 on this list.
Never been a Floyd Fan.  Always found them fairly boring.
You Shook Me is not a favorite of mine.  If the selection had been Back in Black or For Those About to Rock, it would have been much tougher not to include in the top five.

Long after we've all shuffled off this mortal coil, people will still be singing Bohemian Rhapsody. Queen somehow managed to successfully marry the two seemingly disparate elements of popularity and complexity to create a timeless anthem for the ages.

If I related this before, I'm sorry, but about a year ago, I was driving my daughter home from school and she asked me if she could go to this dance at school.  She went on to say something about how she wanted to see her friends, but was unsure because the last dance the music was really bad.    I said sure, and because I can, I put on Stairway and told her - sort of tongue in cheek - how this was the song that ended pretty much every dance I've ever been to.  Fast forward to me picking her up from said dance, and me asking how it was.  She looked at me with this look on her face and I said "what happened?  Music suck?"  And she said it was fine until the last song.   They played Stairway, and some boy asked her to dance and she didn't know whether it was slow or fast or what...

Point is, 45 years later, and two generations later, they're STILL playing that fucking song at school dances.   I can't wait until my seven month old grandson dances to Stairway at HIS first school dance...

The one song that was a staple, beyond all the pop hits and rap, at my middle/high school dances, was You Shook Me All Night Long. Stairway seems like an odd pick to me. It takes a while to get going...

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
