This thread is already awesome because I've been trying to remember the name of Native Construct for like a week now, heard about them recently . Thank you. Gonna check them out right now. Heard about that album a while ago and it's been bugging me for days. And yes, you have some mighty fine albums in that list!

I'd like to recommend a heavy, dark prog metal album called Magnisphyricon by Sons of Seasons. It's Kamelot's keyboardist's side project. The first album is good but this album is so awesome I think most prog metal fans would love it. It's smart like Kamelot (makes sense, Oliver writes for Kamelot as well), but has real darkness and power to it, and an amazing singer. "Bubonic Waltz" and "Soul Symmetry" are killer.

Lots of great albums there in the OP mate.  Burn the Sun is one of my fav albums of all time, perfect prog metal.  CM, Pyramaze, Serenity and VP all brilliant bands in general.

Blind Guardian are brilliant, but I thought that album was pretty shit.  Twilight Force was one I always meant to check out too.

Andy Timmons is a gun but I find it hard to find a full album of killer stuff from him.  That Insomnium is amazing, and I also love One For Sorrow, Shadows of A Dying Sun and Across the Dark.

I'm a huge Roine Stolt and Yes fan, but that Anderson/Stolt album was a major disappointment. It's not bad; it's just so bland.

My number one answer is

Superior - Ultima Ratio

A great German band that really didn't get the praise they deserve. Favorite song is Fallen.

Pretty much anything by this band from Finland called Poets of the Fall.  Their Signs of Life, Carnival of Rust, Twilight Theater, and Clearview albums are pretty darn good and pretty much stacks up quite well when it comes to that modern rock/alternative rock sound.

Thought Circus Maximus had the chance to make it big. The First Chapter was a great debut, and the growth they showed with Isolate established them as a potential songwriting force. But it seems like they never fully capitalized on their potential.

No worries, NC are amazing!  Thanks for the recommendation, Sons of Seasons is brilliant! Right up my alley, unlike another Sons of.....  ;)

No idea, so underrated! Nine is one of my favourite albums.  They also got a bit of extra exposure during the 1st Chapter/Dramatic Turn of Event album cover drama!

I gave the new Blind Guardian another shot and love it.  Andy Timmons Revolution is very consistent.  Check out There and Back Again by Twilight Force - its a lot of fun!!

Glad you like SoS. :) Zierler has one album called 'Esc' that is really good, you'd like that too, assuming you haven't heard it. The song 'Rainheart' is really cool.

+1 for Superior - Ultima Ratio!

Such good piano and vocal work. Enjoy the concept too. Had to search far and wide just to get the physical cd of it.

My all time favorite Superior song is Until The End. Especially the Ultra-Live version.

Hard to know what someone else's radar picks up or not, but I'll drop an honourable mention to:
Earthside - A Dream in Static

Metal. Maybe prog metal, who knows. Genres are pretty much useless anyway.  :lol

Here's a link to Spotify, for those who use it:

This had so much potential, I still wonder what went wrong.

Took me many listens but I eventually 'got it' - its no Flower Kings or Yes though...

Didn’t Poets of the Fall do a song for the video game Max Payne 2? Late Goodbye or something like that. The name sounds familiar and if I remember they sounded really good. I’ll have to dig deeper into their discography

Oh, sorry!

I have a bunch of stuff I could share as well. On the forums we have this game called 'Roulette' in which people send music to a host. The host scores the music based on what he/she likes. Excellent way to discover new music in a fun way. Be sure to sign up for one if you're interested.

That would be correct.  Late Goodbye was on Max Payne 2.

I Love Superior, and enjoy Ultima Ratio, but I've never considered it better than Younique or Behind.

I haven't heard Behind as that is one hard to find album. I prefer physical releases.

Try out the Anciients from Canada.  They have two albums out and I like both about the same.  The albums are Heart of Oak and Voice of the Void.  They are a nice mixture of harsh vocals and clean vocals

I feel exactly the same. It could have been improved if the instrumentalists were more prominent in the mix and if JA didn't sing over EVERY SECOND OF THE MUSIC. He just dominates over what I can vaguely hear as really interesting musical passages, and I get fatigued from hearing his voice by the 2nd track. I know they're working on a 2nd album, and I'd like to hear some vocal interplay between him and Roine, as well as some extended instrumental sections.

So thanks to DTF I have definitely discovered the following:

Progressive Metal
Seventh Wonder - Mercy Falls (thanks Tomislav  :tup)
Circus Maximus - Nine
Native Construct - Quiet World

Prog Rock
The Dear Hunter - Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise

Metal
Insomnium - Winter's Gate
Agalloch - Marrow of the Spirit/The Mantle
Vektor - Terminal Redux

Quiet World is great and one of the stand out albums on this list.

Hard to know what someone else's radar picks up or not, but I'll drop an honourable mention to:
Earthside - A Dream in Static

Metal. Maybe prog metal, who knows. Genres are pretty much useless anyway.  :lol

This Earthside album is also amazing and an unbelievably strong debut (just like Quiet World actually).

As for me, I'd probably add:

Artificial Language - The Observer (thanks Train of Naught for pimping this)
Astronoid - Air
Black Crown Initiate - Selves We Cannot Forget
Children of Nova - The Complexity of Light
Chthonic - Bu-Tik
Crippled Black Phoenix - Bronze
The Hirsch Effekt - Any/all of their albums
Ihsahn - Arktis
Mandroid Echostar - Coral Throne
Megosh - Apostasy
Oceans of Slumber - Winter
Odd Logic - Penny for Your Thoughts/Effigy
The Ongoing Concept - Handmade
Pressure Points - False Lights
RX Bandits - Gemini, Her Majesty
Shining - International Black Jazz Society
Thy Catafalque - Meta

Most of these bands/albums were discovered via DTF and that is why I will never leave  :heart

Great mention. I’ve been singing this album’s praises since I first heard it. Such a refreshing take on progressive music in a genre that was getting stale. Easily a top three debut album in my CD collection.

Bump. Search function brought me here.

Twilight Force. I was jaded on power metal for years for a combination of reasons but ProgPower put the fire back in my soul for this music. I wrote off Twilight Force as just another Rhapsody clone... and over the weekend I gave Heroes of Mighty Magic a listen. HO LEE SHEEEEEIT. WOW. Those orchestrations. Those vocals. Those melodies. The speed, energy, and intensity. The orchestrations sound straight out of Howard Shore's LOTR soundtracks with this film score quality I've never heard in another metal group - not from Tuomas Holopainen, not from Philippe Giordana, not from Luca freaking Turilli. Truly unique, and blew my miind, I'm so upset I wrote this group off and spent the last 2 years ignoring this album.

And now they have Alessandro Conti - vocalist for Luca Turilli's Rhapsody - as the singer, which means only more great things for the future. All in on these guys. Wow.
