Curious to see Train of Thought in your top 5, Dave. Not that I'm criticizing, just not often one you see in the top 5, especially alongside The Astonishing. What about that album resonates with you so much? That goes for anyone with ToT up high. A large part of it is sentimentality. Train of Thought was the first DT album to be released after I became a huge fan of the band, and my anticipation was as high as it's ever been for an album by any band. It didn't disappoint either, in fact it blew my socks off. I was in awe then - and still am now - at how a band could shift between moods so brilliantly. I've seen a lot of people describe that album as relatively 1-dimensional (i.e. predominantly metal), and perhaps it is, but it also has some of their most beautiful moments (the end of Stream of Consciousness, for example, or the finale of ITNOG). I still think it's one of the two best metal albums ever written, along with Master of Puppets.

As for Train of Thought, just like Dave_Manchester, I don't find it one dimensional at all. I've never really understood that criticism. Still a fantastic album for me...but then, I've always been more of a metal guy.

I like TOT a lot, but I feel it was heavy just for the sake of making it heavy. It's not balanced at all, just a lot of heavy/in your face tracks, and Vacant. That's why I rank it 9 on my list.

Ranked the albums in tiers, but listed them chronologically after that, because it's not really fair to ask me which is better or worse in a particular tier. Note that the bottom tier is not BAD albums, I just have particular things I tend not to like about them, which keeps them from being enjoyed all the way through.

My thoughts on why someone would put ADTOE so low (like I did) is the inconsistency. While it does have some of their best material (Bridges, Outcry, Beneath the Surface...), it also has some of the worst stuff they ever wrote (BMUBMD, Lost Not Forgotten...) Also, I've never been a huge fan of BAI (it's not bad, but the way people drool over it around here is, IMO, cringe-worthy - it's got a serious case of "longest song on the album syndrome").

I'm in the "they ripped off Images and Words" camp. Bridges and Breaking All Illusions are the only two I really go back to anymore. I can forgive BAI for being LtL part 2 because it's still a great song. This is the Life is pretty good too. The rest of the album is just boring re-treads of better songs and songs that just kinda suck.

I'm in the "they ripped off Images and Words" camp. Bridges and Breaking All Illusions are the only two I really go back to anymore. I agree on the fact that some structures/arrangements are very similar between the two, but that doesn't prevent me form ejoying the album, which, once you forget about it being "IAW 2", is quite amazing and has some incredible moments from all the 5 members of the band :metal
But it's fine that you dislike it, it just surprised me because it's the one out of the MM era albums that most people tend to prefer.

By that mark, you're not allowed to enjoy any songs with the standard verse-chorus structure except the first one ever to have that. It's ridiculous! Stop putting all these restrictions on your taste, and it will become a ton healthier as a result.

You do realise that like, 90% of DT's songs are only slight variations on the standard verse-chorus structure, right?

It's not about just sounding the same. OTBOA and LNF are literally stretched out versions of PMU and UAGM. Metallica's One and Fade to Black share the same structure but are completely different songs. Same with Endless Sacrifice and Sacrificed Sons. Lost Not Forgotten is Under a Glass Moon. Finkle is Einhorn.

The Astonishing was much better than I remember, but that they may have been a result of trimming it down to 20 songs. BC&SL has not aged well for me and makes me even more happy that MP left because his fingerprint is all over BC&SL and SC.

This is all from personal preference. I am not going to sit here and dissect each track from each song and say how each album flows or doesn't flow. But I will say this.
As DT is my favorite band, you'll notice that from I&W through SFAM the releases were totally unique from the others and that's what, in my mind, used to set apart DT for other bands (regardless of genre). It was also a mark of an incredible band. To be that diverse and yet that good was unparalleled.
In addition, each album has strong tracks. Although Systematic Chaos is my least favorite from the band, I really dig the song, The Dark Eternal Night.

9-12 are all different kinds of average, so they're pretty close. If you want to argue that BC&SL is "better" than SC I wouldn't necessarily disagree, but SC is more enjoyable. ADTOE loses to both on account of the flat production.

I've probably listened to The Astonishing all the way through thrice and it hasn't clicked with me at all, but I don't really feel like I've given it a really fair shake, so I generally don't include it in rankings.
LSFNY is far and away my favorite live DT album, but that's more because of the DVD.

OK. I am into this for a bit over 2 years now - since I made the greatest discovery ever. DT has more than 1 song.
I have been in the honeymoon stage pretty much the whole time and not until the last couple of months willing to listen to anyone else. I have kind of expanded a bit with Symphony X and Joe Stump. Love Metallica less now....
After 2 years I pretty much know all the music now and my list has changed a few times, but I think it's fairly settled now. I decided I really needed to listen to several albums to make a determination between 3 and 11. So for the last week or so I have been pounding DT. It has been wonderful and I am nowhere close to being burned out. :heart

4. BCSL - everyone is so down on this, I love every song and never want to skip and the covers are great also. I will be listening to this more.
5. Awake
6. IAW - I suspect it is lower than typical because I didn't start out with them and this album.
7. The Astonishing - I prefer heavier, but I saw it 3 times and now Love it every time I turn it on. When I hear the NOMACS at the very beginning I am immediately transported to the concerts and where I fell in love. James does such a great job with the different characters. I have listened enough to really tell the difference.
8. TOT
9. SC - I like ITPOE 1 and 2 together better.
10. Octavarium - It has 3 of my fave songs and my all time fave - Ocatvarium, but I cant get into the rest as much. I love the art, the originality of how each song goes up 1 key to make the octave.
11. FII - I really like this one too ::)
12. DT12 - a few greats
13. WDADU - I have to have JLB ;D
I could easily switch around 4-11
