Greetings DTFers, and welcome to my third roulette. All are welcome, first seven people to jump in will be accepted, and Chad is already in cause he talked me into doing this silliness. I'll take anyone but appreciate people who are active and responsible in sending songs, I hate to wait. As for my half, the speed of this will depend on how my work goes, but I would like to get one to two rounds down a week. There will be no to little writeups, I will more or less just shit talk songs or give them brief praise. Here's the 411.....
RULES
Eight players, eight rounds, one person will be eliminated each round. I will announce at random intervals throughout the week whose safe from elimination until only two people are left, then the elimination will be made. For the first four rounds, their will also be a golden ticket given away that will provide immunity from elimination to the best song. Additional rule: because of the addition of the tenth person, I am adding a "Floating cut", this will be one elimination made at any time, in any round, for any reason. I will try to make it about the music, but it may also be just because you're a Dodger fan.
ROUNDS 1 through 4---- 7 minute maximum song length, NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
ROUND 5- 10 minute song length
ROUND 6- two songs from same artist, one must be an instrumental. 15 minute max
ROUND 7- Two consecutive songs from the same artist, songflow will count heavily. 20 minutes max
ROUND 8- Send me an album
FORMAT
All submissions will be PM’d to me for ease and convenience, and except in very special circumstances, I will insist on Spotify links (so I can make a playlist with each round to listen to on my commute) exceptions may be made but please make this easy on me. Once an artists is submitted, they are banned, I don't want competing songs from the same artists.
ME AND MY TASTES…
So I was turned on to prog at a very young age, having older brothers who were cranking Yes when I was a wee lad of 7ish. By age ten I was intimitaly familiar with the likes of Yes, The Who, Rush, Triumph, Pink Floyd and The Kinks. In high school my one brother and I set ourselves a bit apart when we discovered Marillion and through them my favorite band IQ. A few years later I made my first great discovery on my own when I heard Pull Me Under come on the radio. Marriage, fatherhood, divorce, and chronic alcoholism set in, and I found no new music for the next fifteen years. Then came the mutual discoveries of sobriety, DTF, and Lady Obscure Music Magazine. My new drug was music, and I craved all sorts. Mainly found by artists submissions to the webzine or by random searches on Bandcamp (and their mutual user suggestions, a brilliant tool for finding new stuff) I quickly amassed a sizeable library, but I’m always willing for more, hence this roulette. Another thing, there's a good deal of more well known artists I have missed, to the quick and attentive go these spoils.
I like rock, hard rock, metal, and some punk. Prog is my first love, and with that comes prog
metal. Power and symphonic metal will usually play well, but I can be finicky about it. I really love good d'jent, and I mean good, there's a lot of stuff that's being produced in garages and basements across the world that is very sub par, but hidden among it are some real miracles. Growl vocals are cool, but must be done...tastefully. As you can see from my banned list, I am all over the place but have given some markers as to what I really dig.
THE BANNED LIST
Here goes, and I know I missed some things since this is just copied off my phone. Artist with one or two stars are liked and loved by me a lot, and get tons of play time. Artists with three stars are all time favorites. Also note, pretty much anything that appears on American classic rock radio (Kansas, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pat Benatar for example, pretty much everything from the seventies and eighties) is also banned. Submit if you think it’ll slide by, but I doubt it.

Really frightened by the whole elimination and immunity concept but at the same time really intrigued by some of the round themes (read: last 3 rounds I won't make it to anyway).

Looking at the banned list,
A) Man there's a shit-ton in there that you got me in to
B) I recognize more than a few that I had a hand in
C) Only one act in there that I have (had) on my inventory of bands to use :fistpump:
Also... math. If you eliminate one person per round, then there will only be one person left for Round 8. Is there going to be a non-elimination round, or are you going to take 9 entrants?

No, this is the hidden clause that makes it possible that no-one wins the roulette, if the only participant in round 8 fails to impress Lonestar enough with the album he sent.

Alright, I've read the first post now. Round 6 sounds a bit difficult, that is if I'm even going to be in the competition by that point. My goal is to make it to the Round 8, by the way.

Sorry for the intrusion, but out of curiosity... how do roulettes work? I've read the rules but the ultimate goal escapes me - it is to promote new music and allow people to discover new stuff, with the "winners" and "losers" determined by how much the roulette host likes the song or the band proposed?

Parama... YOU are not on the list. Irrespective of Orcus, there are *9* players in the first round (the 8 I listed + you). Your post suggested you thought there were only 8 players in the first round.

And heck, while we're still awake, let's let someone wake up to the feeling of safety, of knowing they ran the gauntlet to round two. I think I have a clear winner for this round already, but the cut is gonna take a few more spins.
One song I know will be safe (though not the winner) is In Exile by The Pineapple Theif. A solid prog track, well constructed though a bit on the predictable side. Overall a worthy submission by a band that I knew would deliver. Tomislav, you my friend are hereby safe for round one. Feel free to talk shit and mock the other guys...

You know, one thing I noticed is the mood in which you listen to songs as well. I gave them a spin yesterday after a fairly brutal weekend at work, and all the moody, depressing wrist slashing songs just brought me down (like yours Ruslan), whereas the more upbeat rocking songs clicked. It's hard to pick a fave, because they're all so damned good - the difference between the 'best' and 'least best' tune on that album is minimal. The hooks in the chorus on Space Whisperer just ... well ... hook me.

I don't agree with Parama that Bloom is their weakest album, because I actually think it's their best. The first one is good, but lacks the tight and crisp production, the second one is great, but I can't get into some of the songs, and Bloom is fantastic. The one they released 1,5 months ago called 'In Contact' is slowly climbing to the top of my favourite releases from this year as well. Some great stuff on there, although it didn't seem that way upon first listen. Great band - and I thought you'd like them :)

Evermind and ToN, both of your songs were, for me, average at best. The Leprous song had some good moments, but that last minute or so of falsetto chorus was painful after a few times. I think there was just something about the vocalist that I just couldn't agree with, and the song was a bit blah in general.
The Ihsahn song was bleak at best, I kept waiting for it to get really going but when it did it just kinda fizzled for me. And Parama called it in that the doom growls just didn't agree. By no means does this mean I don't like growls, or even doom-ish ones, Anciients is one of my favorite recent bands, but these just didn't do it for me.
The edge barely went to Leprous, and because of that, Train of Naught, you sir are cut. Thanks for playing, and please hang around to heckle and give these other guys shit.

I'll tell you, it was even spookier for me. Tuesday night, I was checking with RJ on a few Canadian bands. I'd decided on The Hip - and this song - but didn't send my note to him with the 'story' until Wednesday morning. I was going to finish it off by stating that Gord was still fighting the cancer, and decided to do a quick Google to see exactly how he was doing. The news had broke only 2 hours before I typed the email. I was holding back tears most of the day - unsuccessfully at times. The outpouring of tributes and emotion around the country was beyond words.
So yeah... disturbingly eerie.

Gave the tracks a few spins today, and now I have two fighting for the top spot, and three fighting for the cut, so let's let some of the middlemen off the hook...
TAC- Iris Divine was some good shit, a band I'll surely be checking out more of. In most other rounds this one could've had winner potential, but the top songs were very strong for me. Very strong. No matter, you sent an excellent track, and I thank you. Go get a beer and relax my friend...
Elite- You had immunity anyways, but the Voyager track you sent would have been enough to keep you in the game no matter. Voyager is a band I've sampled a few times but never dug into them, I think there's something off putting about the singer's vocal style for me, but the music and the track in particular are more than enough to overcome that. Enjoy the down time, and get ready to be vulnerable again next round...
I think that's enough for now, gotta get some more listens in before I go further. And with the top songs, they're so close, I may give a bonus for the second place song, the two are so close, and both were right into my wheelhouse, just killer fucking tracks.

I think I was just more thrown off by having an instrumental out of the instrumental(ish) round, and also it just seemed to tease at me but not take it anywhere. There's a certain sound to it that did appeal to me, which is probably what saved you (check out Tempel- The Mountain, this track reminded me of that one which I love). King- Wow man, just wow. Such a complex and rich song, yet clean and playful. Loved every second of this. Got a heavy Haken vibe off it, which will always get you into my good graces for sure. This song was just fantastic man. Thank you.

For what it's worth, Anciients has been getting about twice as much play as any other band this last six months. That's where I've been at. I listened to the whole Soen album, that shit is fucking KILLER :o

Evermind- So your track was...not sure how to put this...generic to me. It seemed so cookie cutter prog power metal. It sounded like every other band that leaves me totally uninspired to travel to Atlanta to see the Prog Power festival. And those keyboards were just too much man. While there was nothing particularly wrong with the track, there also was nothing that made it jump out to me. Tracks like this are why jingle has never won my roulettes :D
Parama- I don't want anyone to think the harsh vocals are an issue, I love many bands with them. However the opening, wanna be artsy spoken word shit just made me want to skip this song every time on my playlist, and for the last couple days I did. While it did build up into something resembling a tolerable song, I learned that I don't have that much patience.
Parama...seems your self fulfilling prophecy is about to come to fruition...you are cut my friend. And King, even without immunity, you'd be safe. No winner, but safe for sure, decent track though just a bit too uppity and positive for me.
Of the remaining four tracks, one is the winner and the other three are still on the cutting block, this is an incredibly difficult cut, all the songs are on a fairly even level in likeability for me.

I'm not the biggest Beardfish fan as I only know their last three albums. Mammoth wasn't my thing at all, The Void was okay and +4626-COMFORTZONE is awesome. Looking around DTF, I think I might be the biggest fan of their latest :lol almost perfect for me (maybe even 2015 AOTY which was great year)

Nice! Glad you enjoyed it. Their music can definitely get chaotic but the musicianship is top notch. That song is from Ire Works which I love and another album I'd recommend is One Of Us Is The Killer in terms of getting into their style.
Just to clarify, the win gets me immunity for the next round, correct? I know it's gloves off for the remaining rounds after 4.

So all three songs were quite different. Elite, your song was good, it just for some reason didn't click with me. The Beardfish song, again was good, but it was fairly standard prog fare of which I've heard more than a lifetime's share of, nothing really jumped out at me. Mother's Cake was a decent track, but the vocals were just against my grain and stylistically it was a bit out of what I dig.
I think in the end, it was the vocals of the Mother's Cake track that did it for me. Tyrias, I'm sorry, but pack your bags bro...you're going home...

This was a classic case of two ballads that annoyed the shit out of me because the singers didn't know when to let the music play. On one hand, the legendary Mr. Van Zant emphasizing that yes, he's going down the Brickyard Road for the bazillionth time, with backup singers saying...you guessed it, Brickyard Road. On the other, we have a singer oversinging what had the potential to be a decent track to criminal proportions. Subtlety, it matters man.

I remember hearing all the hooplah when Passing Light of Day came out, Album of the Year was all over my FB feed about it, so I felt obliged to give it a listen and just remember being very underwhelmed in general, enough not to bother going back. Maybe some older stuff would do better, who knows, but the singers voice just didn't do it for me. That was probably what made the choice between the two, that and it was Ruslan's third time on the block.

It's the only Oceansize album I know and I didn't like it that much until today when I relistened it and was blown away.
I was thinking about sending Opeth but I wasn't sure about growls :-\ Bleak is awesome, one of the songs that got me into them.

I have heard some of Pale Communion, and did enjoy that. I also know it's a big diversion stylistically from earlier albums, which is why Opeth remained on the non-ban list. We'll see if earlier Opeth will garner my favor. I can imagine if someone sent me something off Anathema's last album, it'd get hammered, whereas most anything off Weather Systems or earlier-ish would score well. See if early Opeth falls into that realm, I don't have the blatant animosity I used to with growls, and love them when used right.

OK winner time. In a round of mostly outstanding songs, it was pretty tough to pick a best, but one kept drawing me in a bit more than any other. Tomislav, you get the "W" for this round... Your song was breathtaking. Had the right mix of just about everything, and so well executed. Gonna be digging in deeper to that band for sure!!!

Ok folks, it's that dreaded time.....
So we got two very different songs, both of which I enjoyed, but of course one had to go...Demians was a new band to me, and had some solid moments, but where it shined, others shined more. Of course I'm familiar with Opeth, though I never really dug into any of their past work. Just never got around to it, and I used to have a heavy aversion to harsh vocals. Since I've grown out of that, I seem to accept it more, and it shows in how I did enjoy Bleak. In the end I had to go with staying power. Which song stuck in my head after spinning both? Which one did I not want to go through the patience of waiting for it to develop? And in the end Opeth stuck out more.
King, I'm sorry big guy, but I'm gonna have to cut ya. Thanks for some killer tunes, and hang around for the heckling and shit talking.

blackwater park is a solid album but i'd definitely recommend ghost reveries from opeth before anything else. top-tier album imo, at least top 20 of all time for me
i'd also say isis' panopticon is up there too so this was just generally a good round for bands i dig :lol

I would say they're about equal. Your selection is the genre I love, Agalloch is the genre I used to severely dislike until these two tracks.
Seriously though, I received those two Agalloch tracks in my roulette and while at that time I was fully in non-growl mode, these two tracks blew me away. This is the 10/10 score I gave that I don't regret in the slightest. This was probably the best thing I received in my second roulette, W.A.S.P. and Edenbridge (the other two 10/10) included. I can't express enough love for this sequence of songs.

An instrumental prelude is ok as long as it's a separate track on the album, like how 99% of Euro power metal bands have an instrumental opening track into the second song, that's cool. But if it's one track with a long instrumental opening, that's a no-go.
As to the scoring, it'll be the overall impression of the songs. A really good track can overcome an average instumental for sure, but of course that depends on what your opponents send.

Wasn't at all into the 1st half of Dream House; 2nd half was good, and I enjoyed the instrumental. Same with the instrumental from The Ocean was good, just too short as a prelude.

I don't know Dvne (I thought that was a typo of some sort, but apparently that's the actual band name!), but for all my affinity towards power and prog metal, I just can't get into DGM, I find them too generic and bland. The Secret Pt. 1 is one of the better songs though.
Still, if I were to pick, I would give a win to TDH.

I'll admit, DGM is probably my weakest submission of the last few rounds, but it's a good 1-2 punch for some prog/power with a bit of edge. Plus, Pathosray won a round, so there is a soft spot for Italian Metal in RJ somewhere. What I really wanted to send was over the 20 minute limit, and I didn't feel like trying to sneak those tunes in.
But, as Han said to everyone... "I've got a bad feeling about this".

As two you other two.... this one came down to the nitty gritty, and I went with my round theme as the tie breaker. Chad, your stuff was pretty standard Italian prog metal, a hit or miss with me. It's quality stuff no doubt, but it wasn't out of the park good. Tom, Deer Hunter is good stuff as well, and it was the transition that did this one for ya, so smooth, subtle, a great piece of music. So, Tom, you're into the finals as well....
Now....for the surprise guys.....Tom and Rich, you guys are gonna have to wait a bit before you submit an album, cause you see, in the background in Personal Message land, we've been running a loser's bracket, and the current leader needs to face off against chad to see who gets back into this thing. Now, you may think this is unfair, but they have an insurmountable task ahead of them to win the whole thing. As in all double elimination tournaments, each player has to lose twice to be out, so Tom and Rich, while you only have to submit one album, the winner of the loser's bracket will have to submit two, and BOTH of those albums need to be better than your guys. One bad track, and that fucker is cut.
So, as to the loser's bracket, we got Train of Naught against Orcus. ToN submitted Native Construct- Mute and Orcus submitted Nevermore- The Godless Endeavor. Orcus, your track was solid, I wasn't too hot on the vocals, and the lyrics were comical at best, but musically it was an ass kicking. ToN, your track got a ton of heat in PM land, and that heat was well deserved. This thing was all over the place, a schizophrenic mess. If white girl drunk was a song, it would be this. There was potential there. but they just couldn't stick to it. So Orcus, you're on to the loser's bracket finals against Chad...

Two very different, and good but not mind blowing submissions...
Orcus, the intro (first seven or so minutes) was absolutely sublime, and I was very eager to hear where it went, but it just didn't go anywhere for me.
Chad, this track was quite competent, with some excellent passages, but like a teen boy getting his first taste of a lady, was all over the place.
I'm gonna give the win to Chad here, though it was a bit close, I just thing his song had more overall substance for me. Orcus, thanks for playing, but I'm sorry man, your trip ends here.
Ok, for those in the finals here's how it goes.... Elite and Tom, send me an album. Chad, send me two, and specify which one you want to put up for play first. Fair assessment of my track. I felt the same when I first heard the album, but then after catching the band (most of the band at least) at RoSFest in May, I went back to it, and this album just clicked. To be fair, any 28 minute song is going to be in a few different places.

So I'm gonna go ahead and finish this now. My workweek is gonna hit high gear through next Monday, so I don't think I'll have time to post later, and honestly, I don't think any more listening will change the standings...
Jingle- Alithia- To The Edge Of Time- Decent enough, with some outstanding instrumental work, but the vocalist just didn't really click for some unexplainable reason.
Tom- Brand New- The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me- Very powerful, a certain grower with some serious chops, but for me it just hung on a dark and needlessly morbid feel.
Elite- Wilderun- Sleep at the Edge of Earth- Someone was paying attention, or managed to see how much I spun Gloryhammer on Spotify lol. A nice blend of folk, symphonic, and hard, without getting generic, this album kept fresh throughout. And for me, the one thing that really makes it stand out, when I'm driving, this is the one I want blaring with the windows down. And in the end, it's how it makes me feel that really counts.
And our winner is Elite!!! Congrats man, and a huge thank you to all the players, I had a blast. It was really nice to dig back into the roulette game. I'm always amazed at how much great music is out there, there were no really bad songs in this thing, just good and great.

Interestingly, their first album is quite good too but the folk aspects have a bit of maritime feel to them. It's like an American Pirate/Folk/Death Metal album :lol. I dig it a lot, but it's not for everyone.

Yeah I wasn't a huge fan of their pirate metal debut lol listened to it once and had no desire to ever listen to it again

Interestingly, their first album is quite good too but the folk aspects have a bit of maritime feel to them. It's like an American Pirate/Folk/Death Metal album :lol.
None of it is original material, they're metal versions of old American folk songs.
