Title: MP forum Roll Call
Post by: Hourglass Prison on September 19, 2017, 01:30:47 PM
Hey all! In light of recent events, I just wanted to make a thread for any newcomers from MP.com. I used to post there (under a different name), and was honestly looking to spend more time here, so...I guess that works out.

Any other MP Forumers here? If you're new here, I can honestly say that this is a good community.

Yup, I used to post there as a similar styled username. I post once in a blue-moon, with the most significant period in 2007. I occasionally lurk there overall though, and it's nice to see a lot of the same people still posting. I just couldn't still post there, in light of some of MP's statements after him leaving DT. Plus I was more of a DT fan, than a MP fan meaning his side projects and stuff. I miss the collective nature of all topics being in one place.

I am not an mp.com member, but I know there is (or was) a lot of cross-pollination between here and there.  For the sake of us non mp.com members, what are the "recent events" you mention?

I can change mine to Alpha again. Asia's first album was a little too poppy for my tastes, but when Alpha came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically... The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost.

Okay, okay, but really, this is a great forum and I'm glad to see lots of people migrate over.

Long time lurker , first time poster here. I visited the forums at least once a day at MP ( not a frequent poster for a long lime ). But I'm thankful to be here now , thank you admin.

Many years of Diablo 2 on one screen and MP Forums on the other . Man , I didn't have to quit D2 so cold turkey though good grief. Oh well you guys are here , life continues. Peace brothers.

I posted in MPs forum under the same user name and usually a sun avatar from about 07' until the split. His antics after the split put a sour taste in my mouth so I bolted from that forum....even had the mods delete my profile for good from there.

Came over here and been here ever since.

Present and accounted for. Same everything, minus the post counts and elder status. Well, I finally capitalized the P's. Drove me nuts for years. Feels weird being a noob.

Going to take some time to get used to some of the new names. Might have to create a spreadsheet to keep it all straight.

I'm also glad I no longer have to look at Belichick so I'm fine with Stad's keeping Gene as his avatar.

Welcome to DTF gents.... :RJ:

For those who are into that sort of thing, a long-term little game of sorts is to try to find and figure out the codes for the 100s of hidden emoticons on the forum.  Many are username related.  Others are not.  You just have to experiment.

Same username that I used in DT.net in early 00s and on MP.COM 03 to this date. I'll quote what I posted on the SoA thread:

part 2 of my rant.

I was part of the DT.net boards 2001/02. I remember that there was a lot of trolling that got out of hand in late 03 that got dt.net shutdown. I remember Mark Bredius was the admin, so he kept only website for promotion purposes. So I migrated to mp.com. A lot of cool people over there and relatively safe space to discuss TOT album. And I stuck there through many shutdowns and bans. Then Mike quit the band, and I thought that was it for the site, as well as my loyalty to Mike. I was so angry that he left the way he did. Selfish, heartless, cold.

Fast forward 7 years DT has released ADTOE, DT, TA. No album has really clicked for me. While Flying Colors and Winery Dogs did. That's why I stayed away from this place (as you can tell bc I joined here in 2011). I didnt want to shit on your parade.

This seems like a cool place to discuss music. Hopefully we can get past DT and maybe you guys can introduce me to new music.  :hat

Anyway looking forward to be part of this community.

It is 100% ok to say any DT material doesn't click with you. It isn't a full-on lovefest here. There is a fair share of DT criticism here, and it is largely done with respect to the band. After all, we are, or were, all fans of DT at some point.

The General Music forum is a great place to learn about new bands, or discuss old, longtime favorites.

Just to highlight this important point - we're all free to express our opinions and constructive criticism is welcome, but do so respectfully to the band (current and former members) and to other DTFers.

Anyway, warm welcome to anyone who has recently joined us!

Sad to see it end like that but it was just a vehicle for us. You guys will make this here a home.

I looked back at my post history and saw this thread was created right when MP split from DT and there was a swathe of people rushing in this place
https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=17325.msg620970

That thread had my first post. Same username on both forums, in fact, I think every forum I register I use the same name. Can't believe how fast time passes by sometimes. That thread I linked was about 7 years ago.

Glad to see some more MP Forum flotsam washing up on these shores. I'm dave_manchester from there of course, nice to see the old faces and meet some new ones. Now if someone could just convince The Fish to haul his fin on over here we'll have almost all the regulars.

I kinda liked him, too, mostly because he just kept bouncing back up like a six month old retriever despite the endless slap downs. I don't think I've ever known anyone stick so doggedly to their own interpretation of science in the face of so much fact-based evidence to the contrary.

On another subject, has Bails made it over?

After a while I started reading his posts in the voice of Professor Frink from The Simpsons. "....dropping the tracks' upper peak limit down -6db's, so when I create the new peaks and dynamics, they will reach as high as -4db's, but never past -3db's, boo HEY boo HEY!!!"

As for Bails, he lurks here but I don't know if he has an account yet.

I just read page 1 of that FLAC thread for s & g.  Nice job, Chris Hinton.  Not that I have the background to judge, but your replies contained more actual content than the other guy.  I too am/was mostly ignorant of compression, and didn't understand how the term "lossless compression" wasn't inherently contradictory.  But since smarter people than I have created it, I trust that it is not.  Reading your replies made me understand that the algorithm can reconstruct the "missing" bits, thus perfectly recreating the source string.

He seemed to backpedal his argument to say that the decompression algorithm can theoretically stumble in is function, producing inaccuracies in the output, but that's pretty weak.  Anything like that which may happen must be so far below the noise level of all the other parts of the system.

Here!  MP.com member since before the crash, frequent poster in the past, not so much lately except for the infamous FLAC thread.

In which you delivered, if I remember correctly.   Someone else came in with some touchy-feely pseudo science, and I think I learned 98% of my digital copy reproduction knowledge from your reply.

A few of us delivered (portnoy311, gborland, et al).  Those are the threads I go for anyway -- science, nerdy, and geeky.  Who remembers the Moon Landing threads?  That guy pissed me off to no end.

I remember that one. Cannot recall his avatar or name off the top, but if you said it I'd be like oh yeah him! That was hilarious in that at every single turn, he was refuted yet kept going. That is a thread that would end up in the P/R section here I reckon.

That would have been the infamous GlassDream.

D'OH! Thought I was replying about the FLAC thread.  The moon landing thread was something else entirely.  That one made my brain hurt.

Sorry King, I was kidding. I just named the first person that came to mind on the forum that had a memorable exit. Sorry to mislead, I thought it was funny. I just learned he was 7th here too, but looking through 7th's posts there doesn't seem to be a difference besides use of capitalization.

Funny addendum to the SeventhSon story. MP Forumers may recall I had some blazing arguments with him in the two political threads over the years (one of which culminated in my removing my old account and taking a break from the Forum for everyone's benefit). I generally couldn't stand him, I thought his posting style was too often designed to rile people up and take discussions on stupid tangents, and I assumed that he couldn't stand me either.

After he got kicked off MP's place he came over here and PMed me, of all people, to ask how to join in the P/R forum. I briefly told him how to request admission, and that was that. I consciously avoided him in the posts he made on here, and stayed a mile away from his P/R threads.

Then, some months later, shortly before he got banned from here but knew it was about to happen, he PMed me again and gave me his e-mail address and social media info, and said he'd love to keep in touch (I haven't, but I did have a clear the air exchange with him, because I was completely taken aback by the difference between the person who posts as "SeventhSon/7th", and the person who was now writing to me as himself).

The point is, in private he's actually a very different kind of person, which I suppose is predictable. He listens in a way that he doesn't in public.  Most of what he did was shtick (perhaps even 'trolling'), which was frustrating, because when he wasn't doing that he had interesting and informed things to say on a variety of topics. But his deliberately provocative baiting of "the left" and insisting people "own" positions which he'd dreamt up for them wasn't conducive to proper and calm discussion in my opinion, and I wish he hadn't felt the need to do it.

In my 10 years of going to MP's forum, Seventh was the only - the ONLY - person I genuinely could not stand. For a few months I tried to reevaluate him but I'd say the last few months of his stay there were unbearable. Some of the things he said, whether he believed them or not, were truly reprehensible.

A very brief story, I recall meeting an MP Forum member at my first Dream Theater show last fall, and talked to them about some of the things we had learned about Seventh over his time in that thread. I don't think I'll forget the look of shock/horror on their face when they heard about his views, haha.

Still - I don't wish him ill at all, but I am so glad I missed running into him here. I really do hope he is different in person and that he was hamming it up a lot here, but who knows. I hope he takes care of himself and is well.

Just want to say welcome to all the guys who have migrated over.

This forum really is a wonderful place. I rekindled my love for DT about 3 and a half years ago. I joined this forum and ended up falling in love with the General Music Discussion (which is where I post 90% of the time). It really is a great community and there is a wide variety of musical tastes here. I can't even begin to list the amount of new bands I've discovered thanks to this forum  :heart

I don't even really consider myself that big a DT fan to be honest. I know I'm not the only one who came to discuss DT but stayed for the community (and to discuss everything but DT  :lol)

Enjoy

It was "7th", and he had a Bruce Willis/Die Hard avatar.

I'm with Dave; I had one personal exchange with him and it was like a completely different person.  Very nice guy, lucid, practical, in my case generous.   I know about being argumentative and not let something go, but I hope to god I'm not as all over the map as he could be at times.   We had threads that literally started with him arguing "A", against others' "B", and ended with him arguing "B" to whoever would listen, all with a soupcon of "Libtards" and "snowflakes" sprinkled in.

Pretty funny. Just visited the Forum and 2 little troll posts have shown up in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum. One from epic member SteveJohnson, who's been absent for quite awhile, and moderator Nippett.

I had also noticed that all the other forums had not been locked down when it all went down.

Steve's- https://www.mikeportnoy.com/forum/m3003796.aspx

How long can winter color your every word?

Lethean?

I'm thinking I want to change my name.  This one is fine, but I like Lethean better. (The song is better too).  The forum help has instructions for changing your display name, but they don't seem to match what I'm seeing.  Does anyone know if a user can change their display name?

When I joined here I did it under NOMACS but asked Bosk1 to change it to MR and he did it fast
Nomacs is cool. :)  But I get wanting to return to your identity, which is how I felt too. :)

Who from the regulars are we still missing now? Fish, BrickGlass, Colin007, Ben (Jewish chap, don't remember his surname, Rosenburg?), pullmyfinger, adhargis, MusicTriviaNut, and the Australian contingent (Ink and Paul Sommer). Who else? And does anyone know if Tupaloop has an account here?

pullmyfinger it's already here with a different user name, I'll wait until he reveals himself

Lots of capitals and emoticons, tied with a pro-MP stance rule heavily in favour of it being PMF. Lack of bold text does provide some doubt, though!

It's nice to read a little pro-MP sentiment from him in those threads. Provides a modicum of balance :lol

I haven't seen it since my first or second post but there was one of those "I am not a robot" verification deals at first.  The one on here has some tough characters to read on a particular background.  It also might have something to do with my color vision deficiency.

So - the JT thread is where I would have gone to talk about the shooting. I know there's a political forum here but you have to be here a while before participating (makes sense).  Can we discuss it at all here? If we leave the politics out of it?

I don't even know that I have all that much to say, but, this is pretty awful. I have not watched any footage yet. I can't imagine what the victims went through.

You've been around for nearly a year and have 150 posts, so you should be able to request access to the P&R boards.

General Discussion should be free from political and religious discussion, but that's not to say that major occurrences like this can't be discussed at all, just that the discussion shouldn't be a political one.

I found out about it late as well - was in a hurry this morning and didn't listen to any news.  Then when I found out I realized I have 2 friends vacationing there - both are fine, though one was out when it happened and saw people start running in the streets.  He went back to his hotel and apparently there were reports of 3 shooters on the news and possible bombs.  What a nightmare just to experience that much; but to have been right in the middle of it is something else entirely.

I think I only lightly participated in those discussions, but I did read a lot of them, and wow.  I can rarely (very very rarely) tell the difference between an mp3 and a wav.  To claim that you can tell the difference between  lossless compression and a wav?  I'd like to put that to the test with a blind listening test.

Yes. But there was someone claiming they could tell the difference between a wav and the lossless compression formats like flac.  I don't think anyone else was buying it. :)

Post by: Stadler on October 16, 2017, 09:11:08 AM
It's my understanding that it is.

For me, I am skeptical of any claim that we can knowingly and reliably hear the difference (on a consistent basis) between the higher scan rates and lossless.   I think it's like anything else; we WANT to hear a difference and so we do, for whatever reason.
Title: Re: MP forum Roll Call

Title: Re: MP forum Roll Call
Post by: faizoff on October 23, 2017, 10:14:33 AM
Me personally, I can tell the difference between 128 KBps and 320 KBps mp3s. I do, however, have a very tough time telling the difference between 320 and FLAC/WAV. It was only a few years ago when I upgraded my computer and had a newer audio chip and a good pair of noise-cancelling headphones that I could sorta tell there was a difference between them..

Now since I buy a lot of bluray audio albums, I can really hear a good difference in the full BR format and the mp3/flac counterparts.

But in the end I settle for 320 for most of my music on casual listen, when I want to really immerse myself, that's when the blurays come out.

Another thing I noticed, I've tried the premium versions of  Spotify, Google music, Amazon prime and Microsoft Groove music. I find the best sound ones to be that played by Groove. Everyone else has something always lacking. In this case I'm talking about playing the tracks on my iPhone with the stock headphones, the same tracks sound the best on Groove, too bad that service is closing out after end of this year.

My Spotify experience got a hell of a lot better when I set the download/stream quality to 'extreme' and also used the options in the audio settings to personalize my own experience. Put your headphones on in a quiet environment and follow the instructions as it plays beeps and adjusts the playback to your hearing. Pretty cool stuff.

I'm not familiar with it, so no. But I just looked it up, and see that the portable music player is $450 on Amazon. Even if I could tell the difference, I don't trust that I wouldn't lose or drop the thing and damage it. My iPod still works, but I have dropped it a few times, and while I'd be upset if it broke, I'm not afraid to carry it around and use it.

It took me a few months, but I made it.  I actually joined DTF several years ago when Portnoy left DT (even have the email still to prove it!), but for whatever reason had to rejoin with a brand new account recently (using the exact same login/account info).  I figure my account probably got deleted due to too much inactivity on my part or something.

Anyway, I always liked the MP.com and DTF communities- been around both for a long time- maybe 12 years or so, though I rarely post.  If no one remembers me (no worries!) I used to have good (and very civil/thoughtful) discussions with Bails, Stadler, Dave in Manchester, Spunky, and lots of others.  Aside from music discussion, the stuff that some might remember me from were topics like copyright and creator's rights, future of music under streaming/free distribution models, whether music/art can be objectively better/worse than other music/art, and tons more.  I had to mostly pull out over the last couple years- had to lurk because I just didn't have enough time to keep participating in the conversations at the level I felt I'd need to.  So lurk mode is the usual for me these days.

My real claim to fame, and I doubt he even remembers this, was turning Dave in Manchester on to Moon Safari!   :coolio

I for one am really sad it's gone, it's been a big part of my online presence for about the same time as you. I used to go there quite frequently even after the forum closed to read on discussions on various bands, shows and movies. I think I was there just a week or so back before it closed. yeah for nostalgia alone it really holds a ton of history. I spent some time on there over the last 9 months compiling a list of 80's Pop Hits. There were 2 topics on there that were extensive that I may not have been able to get anywhere else.

I may still use The Way Back Machine, if for no other reason, but in trying to compile release dates for certain albums (I'm trying to compile an Albums Calendar List for my blog).,as you often conflicting info from different sites. But using the actual Search Function on the Forum is a lot easier/quicker than weeding through many pages on the Way Back Machine.

I was a member for quite a long time and it was my on-line home. Although I didn't post much (still don't) I followed along daily in most conversations. I discovered an awful lot of great music there that I would have never been exposed to. I also met my bass player who became one of my best friends. He wasn't a member but his buddy Dave Neff (RIP) was Nerf.
Sometimes I wonder what became of some of the members that I don't see here. The was a fellow-can't remember his name, that was in every thread. I don't think I ever met him in real life but I know he lived right around me here in Glenside PA local to the Keswick theater? I believe he was also active at the Spocks Beard forum but I could be wrong about that.

It didn't add up at the time, really out of character, and I've occasionally wondered about it when reading your posts here. Just goes to show you never know what's going on in someone's life when you read their posts. Really good to hear you're doing better now.

Edit: just read why this thread was bumped. What a shame the forums have gone for good :'(

I used to live on Two Street in Queen's Village in Philly.   The Prog Nation show at the Tower Theater was my first DT show (I know, I know; for all the times they played Toad's in New Haven, that's embarrassing).  Saw Fish at the TLA, too.   There were a couple of Philly area people on the board.  I remember having a convo with a dude out in front of my house - block party - and I remember getting vibes like he was on the board, but I felt stupid asking him. :)    Another guy is a friend, and I still keep in touch via text, but we met up for the Marillion show at the Keswick (met Mark Kelly out front on the sidewalk, too!).

Nice to know the story around that. I remember that epic period and wondered what was going on. And I echoed this in another thread, but it's very cool to see the classic kirk avatar.

That site was my first online presence. I was also at DT.net but bailed as it was toxic after getting into a nasty fight with someone. I post here about as much as I did at MP's place. Visit probably dozens of times per day but don't post much. If it wasn't for the UFO thread here my post count would be a lot lower.

Gone is octobarns, the Gaahl thread and all of the awesome SteveJohnson photoshops, among many other things.

Good times.

The octobarns and Gaahl threads were pure gold! Was the blastbears thread over on MP too? Or was that here? I can't remember, but that thread was great too.

It was my place. My home away from home. What the local record store used to be but more. Many great conversations over the years. Some lowlights and many highlights. I remember vividly sitting in front of my computer for the Score show and reading posts from those who were there. Wey was a great mod. I still miss it, but in an odd way, it was a blessing when it shut down. I was addicted and life was passing me by. I've accomplished so much since those days. And yet, I truly miss it and all the people there.

Mr. Cymbal.
I tried to type a couple of sentences like that once and it was an absolute nightmare. I can't imagine doing that in paragraphs every single post. That dude had a real commitment to his style.

I was going to say that in my post.  That one post took me like 20 minutes, and that DOESN'T count the editing when I found out that some of the colors I picked were illegible.   Man. The only thing I can think of is he set a macro or something.  Or a font (I never checked if each letter was always the same color/size).

I always wondered what happened to that guy or where he is now.

And who was the guy that would always respond as 2 separate people, but 99% the second person never said anything?

I was at The Forum since the early days. I can’t remember if I joined before the crash or just after, but I know I was reading it around the time it started. The Genesis, Rush, and Marillion discography threads over there played a huge part in those three becoming my favorite bands. I also remember lots of dumb random stuff that happened there that I tried to explain to friends in real life but you just had to be there.
