Hey Samsara - it is all ages. :) Depending on how old your kids are, it could be cool, or it could be something you want to avoid. I think PP attendees are awesome, welcoming, friendly, you name it. There's also a lot of drinking and people don't necessarily behave as they would in front of kids. Someone brought their 12 year old this year and it seemed to work out, but the kid was only there for days 3 and 4 and wasn't there for every set.

Hey there. Thanks for that. We are very selective on what we take our kid to, as she is young (she'll be almost 10 by this time next year). We usually make sure it is seated. Appreciate the info. What we would probably do, if we did it, would be each of us (my wife and I) would each attend separately, and then maybe bring our daughter for a couple things here and there. But it probably won't be feasible. But it's killing me because I'd love to finally see Kingcrow.
It's rare for me to say this for ProgPower, but the 2018 lineup is a lock for me, I will be making my 2nd trip to the festival.
I'd wager a c-note that JLB will be touring - I saw a snippet of a video interview with him saying as such. Pretty sure Redemption would too with the intro of Tom.
I'll still go unless Triosphere and Vuur also cancel. Imagine if Tarja cancelled as well, everyone will want their refunds then.
I would be hurt as well if I had to be subjected to Tarja.
As you know, we are returning to Atlanta to play ProgPower this year and are extremely excited to do so! We're going to pull out all the stops for this and want to make it an evening to remember. And we will be filing it for a new DVD!
These things cost a lot to do right -- and we managed to pull it off with help from you all last time on Kickstarter. We'll be doing the same thing this time.
Does pledging also get you your ticket?
That's weird. I usually consider buying my ticket as my pledge.
PPUSA just trolled the fuck out of James and DT. Mike and Derek are gonna have a heyday with this!

@Kattelox, all those songs were awesome live when I saw them last weekend. Get over it.

With all due respect, no. JLB was my main draw to this festival (I was going to see him years ago and couldn't, and I've been hyped for a year because I knew I'd finally get to see him now) and SoA is the last band I want to see there, particularly because of Derek and Mike, so I'll be making a 10-hour trip to skimp on not just 2 bands but 3 now. Don't tell me to get over it (I've already dropped $250 just for the hotel) - if you want me to stop posting, then just nut up and say so, but don't tell me that, because I wouldn't tell you or anybody else that. Also, I, unlike you, don't like the album at all. This is the PP thread... I get to post if I'm not attacking anyone, right?
So wait..is SOA taking the slot?

You would know this if you had Facebook or Twitter.
Bosk... I (and as Kattoe mentioned, lots of other people in the many SOA threads) am with Kattoe on this - I just don't think it's an enjoyable album. I haven't been motivated to go back and spin it even once since it dropped. If it ain't someone's cup of tea, coupled along with everything else related to the fluster-cuck going on with PPUSA at the moment, it can come across (especially as a mod) as a little bossy to tell someone to get over it.

No, I get it. And I think I acknowledged both of those points.
Anyway, on topic:
But I can tell you that my information is directly from the source.
So, I talked to my peeps, and yeah, we are in fact drawing the WRONG conclusion from that announcement. Any assumption that DT made James cancel is not accurate. A more official clarifying announcement should be coming soon. But I can tell you that my information is directly from the source.
Man, the shopping cart thread has damaged the two of you.
Now, kiss and makeup. :D

As to the bolded first, I'm not telling you as forum admin to get over it and not post. I'm just posting as a music fan and forum member that you need to get over yourself. :)
Look, I get the frustration. You are perfectly entitled to that. I sympathize with the fact that you don't like them, and that James was a big reason you were looking forward to this show. It really sucks for you and others in the same boat that this happened, and I feel bad for you.
I'm just saying that SOA's set is really awesome, so there's no reason to slag them and what they are playing just because you personally don't like it.

Hey Madman, there's one Labyrinth that's going to kick ass at ProgPower, that's for sure. :)
Hey Madman, there's one Labyrinth that's going to kick ass at ProgPower, that's for sure. :)
:lol
Yup! That'd be the place to see them play it!
I've always been a bigger fan of the metal side of DT than the prog side but I thought Labyrinth was really a cool balance. I was shocked out how well songs like Coming Home went over at the show I was at (which I find to be really generic) and how dead the crowd was for Labyrinth. So I will be eagerly anticipating bootlegs of that show.
It’s come to my attention that there’s been some backlash toward Dream Theater regarding my decision to pull out from my solo band’s appearance at ProgPower this year. This is my decision to pull out and has absolutely no bearing on DT. If anyone has any issues, it should be with me and me alone. Any vented frustration should be directed towards me, not DT. I thank you all for your continued support, and I look forward to bringing my solo band’s performance to you all when the time is right! Best, James.
I'd actually like the studio excuse more if it was him and Matt Guillory in the studio working on a new solo album :(

Here's another thing I wonder about the whole situation. Doesn't he have a new band now? Isn't it pretty much JLB's band but with him singing (and the former screamer of Amaranthe)? Could this have any involvement in the cancellation, as in, the rest of the band is moving on from JLB?
Was there really any backlash towards DT? I honestly didn't notice it here. Personally, I blamed JLB all along. :lol
Also, the correct answer would have been:
Unfortunately, two members of our band had other engagements. The rest of us considered bringing in replacements, but with my recording schedule we didn't feel we could devote enough time to the rehearsals required to give the fans the show they deserved. Good band chemistry takes time, and we simply didn't have it.

Honestly, I kind of wonder why THAT project didn't take the spot then. That way the only major change is the new screamer.
Was there really any backlash towards DT? I honestly didn't notice it here. Personally, I blamed JLB all along. :lol
Yea pretty much the way I felt. Even if the initial statement made a lot of remarks about DT, it still always felt ultimately as JLB's "fault"

Acknowledged that I could be wrong, AND I could be letting my own bias in favor of DT cloud my view, but I get the sense that James is just stepping up and "taking the bullet" for someone else in this situation. But admittedly, that is ultimately just speculation on my part. There are just too many things that are strange and don't add up to me though.

I'm really not sure if you're asking which two members, or pointing out that there are only 3 members in the band. In the latter case, I really don't care for JLB so I have no idea what his band looks like. In case of the former, the clever way to have done it would be to not disclose which two members. Leave it a mystery, which would appear tactful but also make it difficult to see through the bullshit. Was there really any backlash towards DT? I honestly didn't notice it here. I was asking which two. I thought you knew/read something that indicated another member of his band would have a conflict, because as it stands, the only issue seems to be with James. But if you were just coming up with a BS option for them to use as the statement for pulling out... I don't think that would have satisfied anyone any more than what was said. Except to possibly divert the blame from James.
Maybe he just wasn't comfortable coming out and saying, "My voice was in shambles by the end of the DT tour last year and has yet to fully recover." :P
*Day 2 Roster Change*
Folks,
Making this show happen is one of the most fulfilling experiences in the world. But as you can imagine, it can be equally as frustrating. I’m afraid we have to announce a lineup change on day 2. We are heartbroken to announce Dream Evil has to cancel their ProgPower appearance once again.
With the visa petition approved on March 23rd, the band proceeded to book their visa interviews. 4 out of 5 members had no issues during that process and their visa was issued normally. The 5th member was notified when booking his interview that his passport number had been blacklisted due to a “previous conflict” and he wouldn’t be able to have a visa issued until at least January 2019. Upon further investigation, the US embassy in Stockholm found out that Dept. of Homeland Security blacklisted his passport number because in a recent trip with his wife to Mexico, they “flew into US airspace” - without actually landing in the country!
Over the years, we have seen several issues with USCIS and DHS in regards to visa approval and denials. We have never, however, seen anything as absurd as this excuse. He has no criminal background nor there is a history of misuse or illegal entry in the country. We are still perplexed by how crazy of a reason this is. Even our visa lawyer is baffled. We spent a long time trying to work this out with them. Embassy calls. USCIS calls. Lawyer calls. Milton personally involved one of his congressmen who was able to assist in clearing visa issues in the past, but no luck this time. And since this is a vital member for their performance, the band has no choice but to pull the plug on the show.
I will say this... in no way, shape or form this is the management or the band’s fault. They were diligent in working with us at every step of the way and eager to make it happen given the previous cancelation. I have no doubts we’ll eventually get them over here. Hopefully the third time will be the charm.
A replacement has already been confirmed and we will be announcing it later today.
Thank you,
Milton & Nathan
I don't even like Dream Evil, but that's ridiculous and super disappointing because I know several people who were jazzed to see them. It's even more silly when it's just the one guy who they couldn't approve. How stupid and unfortunate.
I hope the replacement is good...
ANGRA SET NEWS!
Day 2 headliners Angra’s headliner performance will be comprised of a special set split into two parts.
For the first half, the band’s recently release and critically-acclaimed album “ØMNI” will be performed in its entirety. This will be the only time they will do that in North America. The second half will be entirely comprised of songs that you, ProgPower USA fans get to choose. This will also be the only chance to get a special non-tour setlist!
You can start voting for the songs on the link below. Keep in mind the poll closes on August 7, a week from today:
https://progpowerusa.com/angra-setlist-poll/
As a reminder... there are still a handful of tickets available for days 1 and 2. ;)
Thanks everyone!

Trump: Securing the borders one PPUSA band member at a time.
I certainly hope he's right about that.Trump: Securing the borders one PPUSA band member at a time.
Milton's comment in a PPUSA Facebook group was that he feels this situation was more about one inept employee working for a government institution who was being a dumbass, rather than the US' immigration policies as a whole.
And the Dream Evil replacement is.... Doro
This will be interesting
I actually know little about Doro, and from what I've been youtubing, it's a lot of hit or miss for me. Seems like it could be a fun performance though and cool to get the opportunity to suddenly see her.
Sucks Ben, you may still be able to sell the tickets though, for day 3 and 4 id think for sure? It's right around the corner so thats a pain though to have to suddenly figure this shit out.
Maybe you should just have your friend come for Saturday, and whatever he manages to see Friday night? There are still people trying to sell tickets and it gets harder and harder the closer it gets.
I bought mine a couple years ago from someone on the Progpower official forum. If you'd rather something more secure for selling:
https://www.stubhub.com/progpower-usa-tickets-progpower-usa-atlanta-center-stage-theatre-9-7-2018/event/103781159/ (https://www.stubhub.com/progpower-usa-tickets-progpower-usa-atlanta-center-stage-theatre-9-7-2018/event/103781159/)
Only one ticket listed there for $209 (before fees). You can probably lower your price and get a sale I'd think.

Highly doubt I'll get to Atlanta unless something amazing is on Fri/Sat...but man I hope Secret Sphere ties onto a tour with one of the bigger bands(like Gloryhammer is doing this year), I'd love to see them live.

They will either play PP only or they will not play the US at all. No band (especially a smaller one) has ever or will ever be announced as a US exclusive and have it changed later.

I would suspect that "US Exclusives" means that PPUSA is going to be the visa sponsor.
I guess Portnoy didn't get that message.

Yo this festival changed my life and it's not even over yet. JFC the hype was real. Progpower is the greatest event.
Reports from my friends there are that Redemption kicked serious ass, and I've seen more than a few saying that Sons of Apollo could have been the best PPUSA set ever.

That's a bold fucking statement.
Not even close to being the best band at PP. :) But I suppose they were for those people.
The Redemption’s setlist on setlist.fm is correct, including the guests appearances? Thanks!
So how was Alestorm? Not seeing a ton about them on FB.

10 hour trip sounds miserable, I'm already back

Yup. It was insane and better than SOA imo

Agreed. Plus you can't beat Ray Alder as a special guest. :)
Finally made it back home. Long ass back to back flight.
Is there a listing of the 2019 bands already?
confused by Poets of the Fall getting an invite, not sure how they fit in.No kidding, they're an alt rock band.
how can this festival have their line-up complete for the next year already?
Sorry to say, I'm not even in the same neighborhood as the fence right now. :lol
Would definitely like to check it out one year just because of the atmosphere and whatnot, but if I'm gonna pay for airfare in addition to the concerts there's gotta be at least a couple bands who are draws for me. Only reason I'm doing ProgStock this year is because it's practically in my backyard.

And to grope me. Admit it. You want to squeeze the Charmin.
Apparently Redemption performed their set list for the cameras before the doors opened yesterday. And of course filmed the actual show too, but I guess their blu-ray will be a lot of the footage from before the real show and then cut into the crowd shots. Kind of sucks when I heard that, but I guess it's a one time thing and they wanted to make sure it was right (especially the history of mics not working from the first 2 days).
Also, Chris Poland coming out was sick. That was a nice surprise and I'm definitely surprised that their cover of Peace Sells is going to be on their video.

Most of the footage will be from Friday night; we did a song Thursday morning that we did not do Friday night in order to make room for Peace Sells, and we did Threads with Tom singing, so those will be used from the morning show.
Peace Sells will be on the audio CD that comes out but not on video. Different economics to play music that is sync’d to video versus just audio. So that was indeed a special moment reserved for those st the show.
And yes, it was sick! :)

Psychotic Waltz I'm not familiar with, but given how much I enjoy Deadsoul Tribe they would certainly be great to see.
People haven't heard of Pretty Maids? Evergrey? Demons & Wizards (Iced Earth + Blind Guardian you faux-metalheads/old people!)? Threshold? Seventh Wonder? You all disappoint me. Next year's lineup is just fine. Who cares if you don't know them... you have a whole fucking year to sample them FFS :lol
Stadler, get out of your rocking chair and go listen to Pretty Maids, I can't believe you've never heard of them. They're a hard rock band from 1981 you old fart :lol

Peace Sells will be on the audio CD that comes out but not on video. Different economics to play music that is syncd to video versus just audio. So that was indeed a special moment reserved for those st the show.
And yes, it was sick! :)
He's heard of, and HEARD, them. I sent Pandemonium to him in his roulette. Bill... it was the song with the Obama clips as the intro.
Just my two cents: I don't think Tom Englund is a good frontman, at least not from that Redemption set. Disclaimer: I've never seen him live before, even in videos, but I was told he plays guitar as well, and this was his first show with the band (second if you count the special set). He was trudging around the stage looking bored out of his mind and his singing had zero energy and emotion. Not sure what's up but it was just boring to watch considering the high energy of almost every other band (a few guys around me agreed). They're simply not for me, but at least the rest of the band was heavy, tight as hell, the lights and production were great, and Vikram defines what an energetic keyboardist should look like on stage, what a delight he was to watch. Very nice guy too and a joy to talk to.

Vik is indeed a great addition and a wonderful person. More important for Tom I think, other than being "just a singer" in Redemption is this is really the first time he's spending a whole show singing somebody else's lyrics, their vocal melodies, over their music. Tom is great at writing for himself, and his singing with Evergrey is top notch, especially if you go back and listen to the emotion oozing from an album like In Search of Truth. That said I still believe that he isn't quite the right fit for Redemption. That said I enjoyed the hell out of their set.
I watched some videos of Redemption's set on youtube and while I noticed some of the same (and have read similar comments on Facebook about the show), I'd give Tom a giant break on that. it was his first shows with the band and probably his first time as a frontman without having a guitar that he can hide behind when he's not singing. I'm sure it takes some time to become comfortable with that, and some comments echo it, where they've said that he looked more relaxed later on in the set.
He's always been amazing in Evergrey. :metal

I know nothing about Doro's music but her set was fun as hell.
I did see them open for Megadeth in 1988, with Sanctuary 3rd on the bill.

I don't get the duck jokes.
So that's an actual photo, not a photoshop?
:rollin That is amazing.
EDIT: I'm not sure which is more amusing--the fact that the duck is real, or the fact that that band is.
Other highlights of Alestorm:
At one point, several fans got down on the floor and pantomimed rowing a kayak.
There was also a singer dressed as a shark during one of their songs (Hangover, I believe it was).
Finally, their closing song was Fucked by an Anchor.
Just a truly wonderfully demented band.

It still amazes me that after 4 days since the show, and everyone is still talking about DUCKY. I really picked a good one for my first ProgPower.
Tarja: Amazing live singer, but I got distracted by the keyboarist's ongoing issues with the sound, as well as Tarja's outfit where it looked like she was always about to fall out of the top.
Hey, I didn't get a duck..
Hey, I didn't get a duck..
You didn't ask.
Be honest. Did you have to get your son to post that GIF for you?

Sorry if this was shared already by someone else but today I uploaded Anneke paying tribute to Chris Cornell with her beautiful rendition of Like A Stone. Sorry I missed most of the first verse but I got the rest. Enjoy.

Thanks Ben! That was my favorite part of the Vuur set because it was just her and a guitar.
She is extremely pretty.
Chad, that sounds amazing. Wow, I'd pay good money to see that.
Definitely need to dig into her own catalog of music after that set. I can't get this damn Cornell tribute out of my head. The way she sings the melody is haunting me :lol

I think you might enjoy My Mother Said. Thats a good song that showcases her vocals.

I met Jingle.boy once. What a jerk!
Well Ducky wasn't killed in NYC last night, in fact, Ducky didn't even get thrown into the crowd.
See ya there cram :metal
Yeah that's one I'm in full agreement with cram on. Insomnium isn't the kind of music I usually enjoy at all but I put on Winter's Gate and wooooow that is a good album.
Poets of the Fall - I have the Ultraviolet album and I'd say this band is an outlier of the festival. This isn't metal and I don't connect with it.... until I do. The thing is, I listened/watched a bunch of their youtube videos and really had no interest. They just didn't seem like they were for me. I still got the digital download because I figured I'd give it a shot. I actually really like the singers voice, the guy sounds great and if I am going to see them (well I could do a food break or something, but I would like to check all the bands out for a little at least) maybe it's best I just listen a little more, maybe their singles aren't what interests me type of band. Anyway, I listened to the album and didn't care for it at first, but then my gf broke up with me and all of the sudden I found myself listening to this and feeling a connection. Standstill is not my music at all and yet, right now, I feel like it's one of my favorite songs. It brings a tear to my eye, seriously. I don't know if they play this one, but if they did, I think I'd be crying at progpower this year :lol But otherwise, My Dark Disquiet is a really awesome song. I don't love the album and still kind of feel this music isn't for me, but I find that it hits some of my current emotions and I actually can connect with this.

For those familiar with Poets of the Fall - what album or albums do you think will make up the majority of their set? Maybe their newest? I have yet to listen to them, but I know there are people who are really excited for them so I'm curious.
Cramx - really glad that you're enjoying Legends of the Shires so much. :)

Likelihood of me being there is increasing. Got the :tup with Mrs.jingle; got 1 of my ITEC Live tickets sold. Now I just need to get a hold of a Day 3/4 ticket, and figure out rooming scenario. Any of you buggers want/need to split a hotel room? Air BnB? What's everyone's accommodation plan?

Just announced that Pretty Maids has been forced to cancel due to a last minute band member change (the replacement's visa won't be obtainable in time for the show). Curious to know who will take their spot.

Same, got to set realistic expectations but my first thought was, how about Kamelot? Tommy will be there for 7th wonder and their full tour kicks in right after that. Only issue is, they have an atlanta tour date a month later.
Well if a band was named in that thread on facebook, its not happening and Kamelot was named. I thought that was "too high" of a choice really but thought maybe it could work given the timing. And it seems like changing like for like may not be an option so maybe they will get a prog band in that spot
We’re excited to share with you the replacement for Pretty Maids for this year’s ProgPower’s Day 1.
Insomnium has moved up to the headliner slot on Wednesday. Given their track record in both sales and touring, it’s a no-brainer of a decision. The band will now get a 90min set and present material from their career. Their new album drops in October, and perhaps a sold-out show can convince them to do one or two live debuts. 😉
We also welcome the return of American metal staple Sanctuary to perform their classic album “Refuge Denied” in its entirety. We expect nothing but a crushing set by them. The band worked hard to make this happen quickly, and thus have our gratitude.
Thanks to all of you for the support and understanding of our cancellation circumstances. As Glenn said, we’ve been put behind the eight ball, but we’re confident this change in plans delivers it at the same level.
Now let’s sell the fuck out of this show.
-Milton & Nathan
I've never listened to Sanctuary but since they're playing an entire album that makes it way easier to get into them. I'll check it out and expect a killer show. :metal

I'm listening to it now. I've heard of them and thought they were Thrash (which they seem to be) so that's kind of cool as it's a bit different than the prog/power.
Like Marc, I'm a big PM fan, so losing them is a big downgrade. Hey we're top 5 (probably top 3) most anticipated act for my tastes.
Secret Sphere's album A Time Never Come is good. I prefer the original version but the rerecording with Michele Luppi is worth hearing. I bet they'll play a couple from that.
If you go back it better be because you're getting cheaper drinks :metal :lol
Galneryus and Demons & Wizards are the two bands I'm most psyched for. Galneryus is going to blow the roof off the joint and imo should be headlining that night. I'm SO excited for their set.

Do you have any idea what they'll play? They have a lot of music.
Wouldn't they likely lean towards their English lyric songs/albums? So far, I've only listened to the Ironhearted Flag albums, and it's 100% English. Looks like their recent output is majority Japanese, but older output is majority English.
Demons and Wizards - 2 albums, and this is the headline act? Are they gonna do BG and IE material too? I dig Hansi as a vocalist, but musically it was just 'ok'.
That's odd. I don't hear any Haken at all in CH.
By 'like Haken', what I mean is super talented prog-metal outfit that gets all wanky and technical just because they can, the writing is bland an uninspiring, and vocally can't say much more than "it doesn't suck so bad". I mean, the vocals are better than Voyager, but that's the nicest thing I can say. :neverusethis:
That's just me though.
Psychotic Waltz - meh. Decent musically; good vocally; the one album I listened to had a terrible hollow sound to it. I'll give one or two more albums a run.
I don't know Sorcerer at all. Any particular tracks I should listen to?
Chad, for CH, I'm not sure what you heard,
I don't know Sorcerer at all. Any particular tracks I should listen to?
I really have no idea why they're labeled as "Doom Metal".
Good thing jingle saved them for last. :)
Sigh... Wind Rose canceled. Replacement to be announced in a few hours... fingers crossed for Paladin, or maybe Theocracy, but I hope Paladin.
That's three down now. :-\
Chad, you should give Paladin a shot (especially if they get announced). Their latest album came out in spring and it's like aggressive thrashy power metal (with some growls) and it's super energetic. Also might have my favorite album art of the year. (https://www.metal-archives.com/images/7/7/0/9/770998.jpg?5042)
IT'S HAPPENING!!! Paladin to replace Wind Rose!!! Get listening, Chad :2metal:
IT'S HAPPENING!!! Paladin to replace Wind Rose!!! Get listening, Chad :2metal:
They only have one album?
While cleaning the house, I made a playlist of Demons and Wizards setlist from Wacken (minus the BG and IE songs). ABout 60 minutes in length, so fucking good. Had two listened while cleaning (2 hours scrubbing the house down) and really like them. I've said before it feels very similar to BG, but it's more metal I think. This is just a good collection of songs. One month from today we will be back home depressed about how last weekend was so damn awesome :metal
I wouldn't mind them going back to just having Thursday, and making it really strong, and having Wednesday be more low key - alternate sets for bands already playing one of the other nights.
Paladin only has the one album, so you should definitely give that a go before the fest is possible! Really good workout tunes.
Glad you're doing it for this year too!! But as long as the Artmore parties happen, I ain't seeing shit in the room. I'll be wasted with everyone in the yard :lol
I too fail to understand why people wouldn't book all four days, but to each their own. With flights as a fixed cost, the incremental lodging and ticket costs blend out the days, and make a full four-day 'festival' still very affordable. I get some might not have sufficient time off, but people traveling in are gonna need to take at least 1 or 2 days off.
:dunno:
Maybe they need to limit the number of international acts - if the cost of visas has been a huge drain on them, then only sign 2 or 3 international acts, and 5-6 domestic ones. It's not like there's a lack of them. Question would be, are they still out of pocket for Wind Rose and Pretty Maids visa fees? If so, then while I feel bad, those are the risks you take as a promoter. While I'm on one hand sorry for the situation they are in, on the other hand, no one put them there but themselves. If the acts aren't enough of a draw to generate sufficient ticket sales, whose fault is that? Not mine. Also not my fault that visa fees/processing times are ridiculous. Solve that problem by booking US acts.
You can't please all the people, all the time. Frankly, with the loss of PM, Day 1 is 50% tripe for me now. I honestly don't think I'm sticking around after Secret Sphere. Day 2, better, but the first 2 acts are just ok.
What's the deal with the courtyard party? Is the Artmore getting bitchy about it?
Word from certain reliable birdies is that James dropped at the last minute because he "wasn't getting enough money" to play. Whether that was his words or his agent/manager's, I dunno, but that was the reason given. Let's just say James is on PP's permanent shitlist.
Chad, for CH, I'm not sure what you heard, but here is the full Bloom album https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoIOobEZ_P4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoIOobEZ_P4) The first two songs you should check out and then literally check out if its not for you. I absolutely love how this album starts (not a bad track on this album either but it starts so strong).
Chad, if you're already there, for Caligila's Horse, I wouldn't skip them. I mean, I'm with you totally on them, but I bet they'd be worth the watch live.
Sounds awesome. I wish they had this when I was younger.
But, once they showed the videos. I was underwhlemed. Last year had one of the best lineups.

Yeah. If anything, when in five years another young modern prog-nerd on this forum will try to shame you because "how do you not even like Leprous and Haken, man", you can say to them "do you know who I am? I saw Caligula's Horse live on In Contact tour!"
Or actually do skip them if they're not your cup of tea, your call.
Chad's going to spend 33% of the festival at the venue, 33% of the festival getting lunch, and 34% in his room watching Pretty Maids videos. :lol

No need to. I'm not enthused about either of those bands either. As it turns out, I probably won't be there Wednesday anyway. If I was, I'd give Insomnium a shot - there are a handful of bands with harsh vocals that I like.Chad's going to spend 33% of the festival at the venue, 33% of the festival getting lunch, and 34% in his room watching Pretty Maids videos. :lol
Not far off! lol, jk.
@ Lethean, that is most likely what I will do. I'm there, so I'll give it an honest go. But if I can't sit thru Sanctuary, I'm certainly not coming back for Insomnium. Them and Barren Earth are the acts I'm pretty sure I'm not going to subject myself to. #ComeAtMe.
Listening to Psychotic Waltz right now (Bleeding). A much more enjoyable listen than their debut album.I listened to some of the debut and thought it was OK. Bleeding was pretty enjoyable.
That's really unfortunate.
Now, I'm curious why they pulled out?

Visa issues mostly. With Secret Sphere and Ancient Bards, they had the visas approved but the consulate appointment was going to be to far out that they wouldn't be able to make the gig.
UGH WTF, Secret Sphere is really good and I'm just starting to really like them >:( >:( >:(
I essentially don't really care much about day 1 at this point sadly. I don't have time or honestly much more interest to start digging into these bands. I'll check it out, I'll be there, I will support the festival, but I am just sooo bummed it's way too close for bands to be dropping now. Didn't they just print all the shirts?!
Chad, we going to watch Pretty Maid videos?

THEOCRACY?? See you guys there! ;D
Theocracy replacing any band on that bill is a win. Seriously.
Honestly, that song was better than many in your top 50 albums from other power metal bands I checked out. Maybe this actually is a good thing then :lol
It's definitely not better than what's in my top 50 :tup but that is the record I tell everyone to start with so yeah :metardica:
It's definitely not better than what's in my top 50 :tup but that is the record I tell everyone to start with so yeah :metardica:
wel of course you would say that, I don't recall Theocracy on the list :lol I just think based on the two songs (I listened to Tim's as well) they are a bit more of what I enjoy in power metal vs. what it seems like you enjoy (and obviously there is overlap). I'll probably move them up my list of bands to check out more in the next two weeks.
Honestly, Theocracy and WHW is much better line up than Ancient Bards and Secret Sphere, in my opinion.
All of the bands that dropped off because of visa issues were from Italy, unless I'm forgetting someone. I wonder if that's a coincidence, or if there's something going on there.
And this is why I can't ever see myself buying ProgPower tickets far in advance. You never know if the lineup that's announced is going to resemble the lineup that plays. I know it's not easy, and I know they obviously would like more than anyone to not have this happen, but of any festival I've ever been to ProgPower has far and away the worst time with bands dropping and needing replaced.
A lot of people go year after year; some people go as many years as they can. I don't know how many people that is, but I think it's a significant amount.

Good - you won't let off a gas bomb that will gross out everyone like what happened last year :rollin
True, Ducky will be hard to beat (and I literally beat it, well more stomped)
I got my redone Progpower 2018 Day 1 video up now which features Ross the Boss, Gloryhammer, Nocturnal Rites, and Voyager. Looking back, that's a super strong line up for day 1. Man, what a good time that night was. :metal :metal
ProgPower XIX Day 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JRRHukIWEY)
I did all the processing for the remaining 3 day videos so I'm planning on putting them up as we get closer, spacing them out from my current videos to keep content coming out on my channel. Already planning, mentally, how I am going to do my videos this year.
I just watched the part with the girl singing the italian opera with Fabio :metal
Oceans of Slumber, yea, meant for slumber. Not for me really. Doro were a lot of fun, I'm not totally into them, but she really brought the energy and performed well, it was fun. And I got the most footage of Angra because well, they were awesome that night. 19:17 in this video for between Doro and Angra when Benjamin got bit by an ant :rollin

Haha OMG. Can't believe I didnt see that at all.
Labyrinth and Redemption were the highlights of day 3 for me. The absolute highlight was Ray Alder's surprise appearance with Redemption. Probably the best surprise in the history of the festival for me.
That sucks! Who would do that? I talked to Ray later that night and he said he wasn't allowed to leave his hotel room to avoid being seen. :)Labyrinth and Redemption were the highlights of day 3 for me. I think I was more surprised and excited for Chris Poland's appearance, since someone had spoiled me about Ray Alder being backstage.
Also, I really liked Labyrinth, but didn't get to see too much of their set since I was on the SOA signing line.Really? I hope you didn't crush any of the poor people who were standing in line to get an autograph...

Signing table, and no incident. MP's response was great and it was my first time meeting him, but I always heard he was really nice in person and I can only confirm that. He just asked for me to defend him more here since he feels he gets ripped on here. JSS/BF/BS were all nice and solid to meet as well, DS was the only one who just wasn't interested, had nothing to say back, and didn't even move his head up to look at who's ticket he was signing. Kind of just confirmed the negative things I've heard about meeting him.
Please tell me K-lox wasn't out combing his hair during their set.

Is PPUSA going to stick with the 4 days? Or is it going to be reduced to 3? There was a lot of frustration this year with visa issues and slow ticket sales for Days 1 and 2.
Dude... you have no idea how much I'm praying for IQ to be in the roster announcement tomorrow!
I'm just not seeing it...I think IQ may be too proggy for PPUSA. I mean, they've been doing PPUSA for 20 years now, and IQ has been there the whole time. You think they'd have had them already, along with other traditional proggers like Fish and Marillion.
Don't get me wrong man, I'd be there for sure, I just don't see it happening.

I ran into Chris Petersen from Cellador aaaand he was in a very strange dark place and all he wanted was cocaine and titty bars
Then again, I was working construction back then. :)
Please tell me K-lox wasn't out combing his hair during their set.

In the ATL, at least when I was living there, "cocaine and titty bars" wasn't "a dark place", it was "Tuesday night". Then again, I was working construction back then. :)
Is PPUSA going to stick with the 4 days? Or is it going to be reduced to 3? There was a lot of frustration this year with visa issues and slow ticket sales for Days 1 and 2.
Still 2 days, with Day one in the loft (as Cram referenced).Dude... you have no idea how much I'm praying for IQ to be in the roster announcement tomorrow!
True... but with Road of Bones being on the heavier/darker side, a new album this year, and (as you suggest) possibly an already available visa, maybe this is the year.
Never deprive anyone of hope!
No IQ folks... And the lineup isn't worthy of a trip for me...
ProgPower USA 2020:
Day 3:
Shattered Skies
Witherfall
Eternal Tears of Sorrow
The Night Flight Orchestra
Jeff Scott Soto (Queen tribute)
Conception
Day 4:
Arion
Thank You Scientist
Beast in Black
The Gathering
Ihsahn
Turilli/Lione Rhapsody
It's amazing the polarity of opinions ... I'm seeing lots of posts on FB saying this is the most amazing lineup evar. And other than Katt, it's seemingly universal here that this is a big bucket of meh (at best).

I spot a jingle
Does anyone really give a fuck that Jeff Scott Soto is going to show up and do a Queen tribute. It can only blow.
Also you think everything blows. :lol
I just met Hansi and Jon, the fun never ends here
It was awesome seeing Kattelox again and meeting cramx and jingle. Let's do this again next year.
Lethean is a vampire. Wouldn’t have turned out anyway.
Lethean... sorry I didn’t get a chance to see you after D&W. I didn’t make it to the Artmore as I wasn’t feeling so hot - and had a terrible night. Picked up a bug or food poisoning, and I’m dyin this morning. Hope the Threahold meet/greet thing was awesome for you! So jelly. Best set of the show for me.
Bigger debrief later when I’m at a laptop, and feelin better.

Where is your Theocracy swag?
curious to the reception to Poets of the Fall.
curious to the reception to Poets of the Fall.
Mostly very positive. Solid crowd for them, but yea, definitely not the biggest reception and some people bitched online. They really were good though. Played a heavier set, did some awesome guitar solos that match anyone else playing the weekend (except maybe Syu). Other than reading it online, everyone I spoke to had a very positive reaction to them. My Dark Disquiet is on my playlist :metal
Yeah, let's just say that my wife would not be as cool as Chad's. :lolYou are supposed to bring her with you.

I'm going to try to make it next year. We shall see how that goes... :corn

Back to reality. ;D
Who's playing Days 1 & 2 next year. I'm gonna buy tickets regardless if I can attend or not. Can always sell them if life happens to interfere :lol
Stadler, I've met Firewings and have now met two members of DTF but *someone* from the MP forum remains elusive....

It'll happen. We were close with that... was it Angra? Based on the feedback, it'd be cool to go to ProgPower next year; problem is, I'm not sure I've ever heard of even one band.

Day 2 however is fantastic and I got maybe my favorite clip of the entire festival which was a brief 3 second chat between Jingle and Tom during Evergrey's set :rollin I'm not sure I want to spoil what he says but it's so funny and innapropriate plus Tom's quick non reaction :rollin
Day 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1C203_RkmA0) is up which isn't one of my best videos, but here's my Day 2 video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZj0u6JiFYU) which I really think came out well to capture everything including the intro Galneryus signing part and the keeping of my ticket stub (plus friday evening atlanta traffic).
Well, as it stands right now, Day 1/2 is gonna have to be hella good to get me there. Day 4 is only almost a total dud for me (Arion is the only one that I have any interest in).

What is next year's lineup?
Turilli/Lione Rhapsody is nothing like old school Rhapsody - I think Chad sent Dawn of Victory, which is unlike anything Luca's done after he left the original group. Sorry, I'm that guy. Had to. :lol

Well, it still has Fabio. :P
Eternal Tears Of Sorrow, Witherfall, and Shattered Skies would be awesome!
What's this "sponsoring" thing I keep hearing about? Is that like a GoFundMe for the band or something? Where instead of funding the event through tickets (or in addition to it) you pledge some money to a specific band?
What happens if the band cancels or has problems with visas? Are you royally screwed out of five hundred bucks?
@Lethean: I'm really happy you gave Galneryus a fair shot (even moreso in hindsight after watching Threshold :lol). They're a very niche taste, but the following they do have is diehard, and I'm so proud of the audience for giving them the energy they deserved. (And for the drink, there was no freaking way I was leaving the chamber during D&W - especially during Valhalla!!)

You can pass it on to another band at the fest, or 'pay it forward' so to speak for a band that will play the next year. It's not refundable though.
Valhalla - no biggie. :) The sing-along wasn't as long as it's been for BG, so it's probably for the best we didn't try to duck out then.

I was here for BG a few years ago, my first PP, but that was before I ever went to the Artmore after parties, that year though did the sing along go long into the night/morning? :lol Also, loved reading your write up today on the beach, also Kat's I read yesterday. I've got to do one as well, I mean to just been busy.
Demons and Wizards - honestly, 10lbs of meh in a 5lb bucket. I’m a middle-of-the-road BG fan, and not a fan of IE at all. I enjoyed listening to the D&W albums leading up to the fest, but live … Jesus H Christ … the rhythm section was the epitome of ‘brick walled’. It’s like the sound engineer just pushed all the levers to the top of the board, and delivered a tsunami of bass and drums. It probably wouldn’t have mattered who was playing, anything was going to be a let down after that Threshold set. It’s ironic how they closing - and best - song is their least heavy. Fiddler on the Green was a great way to end it.
Seventh Wonder - Cram is gonna rage at me for this, but they were my biggest disappointment - probably because I had such high expectations. It wasn't a bad set by any means, but I gotta air my grievances - and there are a few. First, they sampled in Tommy's backing vocals, and at times it was as prominent in the mix as his lead line was. On MORE than a few occasions, he was holding the mic down at his side, and his (backing) vocal line was coming in loud and clear. It was tantamount to lip-sync'g, and very off putting. Next, as the headline act for day 3, you'd think they'd put on a longer set than 90 minutes. There was no need for the keyboard/drum jam. Why not give us The Great Escape in full? Where were songs like Victorious or Funeral Pyres? Those would have been PERFECT songs for the PPUSA crowd. The setlist was rather disappointing, tbh. Lastly, Tommy's vocal was way down in the mix, at least from where I was standing on the floor - about 4 rows from the rail, right side of the floor. There were many times I had trouble actually hearing him over the music.
My turn now ...
Evergrey - I've seen Evergrey 2 or 3 times before, and they are a top-10 prog-metal band for me. Loading up the set on the last three albums was just fine, and it was a heavy-af set. All 5 of them were on point - Tom sounded great, and is a terrific front-man.
Subsignal - they were indeed awesome. I ended up right behind Matt Smith on the rail - it's so cool to see the bands taking in other acts as fans. They were so tight and clean. Really good set, but unlike Theocracy, they did none of the songs I was hoping to hear. C'est la vie. Still a very good set - probably the least metal act of the whole show, but that was just fine with me. I love all 5 of their albums, and Arno sounded phenomenal on the mic - except when it crapped out on him. This year went really well as far as mic problems - only one time during the whole weekend (unless it happened during Mayan or something). There was a song or two I would have liked added to their set, but I was down for anything and it was all good for me. Walking with Ghosts seemed like an odd choice at first, but it turned out really well.

But other than that, they were great!! :lol
Caligula's Horse - still napping.... though I hadn't planned to watch them. Like Lethean and Seventh Wonder, I should like these guys, but something doesn't click. That's too bad - I was really curious about how you would like them live. Quite a few people said they weren't expecting to like them, thought they'd only stay for a song or two, and wound up staying for the whole set. They were intense.
Threshold - Set of the show for me. Love Threshold (though clearly not as much as Lethean… who I could tell was on cloud 9 being just a little off to my right inside the rails). The setlist was awesome, though it was mildly unsettling not hearing Mac’s voice on Mac-era songs. Glynn did a fine job on them, but Mac is just so unique, it took a little getting used to. Johanne is a show in and of himself. I probably spent the most time watching him - whether drumming, or just being a character in the mellow moments. I love Legends of the Shire, so doing 8 tracks from that was just fine by me… but I would’ve been ok if they had dropped one of the 10+ minute tracks for a couple of others from their library. Considering I’m a Damian fanboy, I was hoping for some of those tunes, but wasn’t at all surprised that there weren’t any to be heard.
Clearly D&W is so heavy Chad can't lift it. Stick to the lighter stuff like Threshold ;) :lol

Just because Threshold is clean (er than D&W) doesn't mean they aren't heavy. Same with Evergrey - who were just as heavy as D&W, just not in a 'brickwalled' way. You don't need a wall/wave of sound to be heavy :-*

I'm not sure where you were for the set but I was right up on the stage to the right for the whole show (and in front of the barricade for the first 2 songs) and I thought the sound was fantastic. I've not had good experiences with the sound on the left side of the room, but on the right side this year it sounded excellent to me. I could hear everything clearly anyway.
In all seriousness though yeah the rhythm section is pretty loud but I like it that way personally. And Jon Schaffer is the world's tightest rhythm guitarist. That guy is just insane. Friend of mine said he got carpal tunnel just watching him pick :lol

HAHA, that's a great line.
I was indeed on the left side of the bowl right on the stairway between the last 2 sections ... so yeah, maybe that had something to do with it.

I truly lost interest after Mac left. I am really not a fan of Damian's voice.
Did any of you guys that met Matt Smith ask about a new Theocracy album?
I'm very much looking forward to this. :metalDid any of you guys that met Matt Smith ask about a new Theocracy album?
No, but Caligula's Horse is making a new one :neverusethis:
I didn't honestly. I should, but somewhere along the line, I lost my interest in Threshold.
I always thought Glynn sounded like a blend of Mac and Damian.Did any of you guys that met Matt Smith ask about a new Theocracy album?
No, but Caligula's Horse is making a new one :neverusethis:
Also Glynn sounds - live too, at least in my opinion - similar enough to Mac. I liked his stage presence, really good frontman.

I think you should give it a listen sometime if you liked them before. I don't want to over-hype it because things hit us all differently. But I think there's a chance you'll enjoy it and if you wind up saying "meh", well, no harm done really.
I’ll run through the album tonight.
I’ll run through the album tonight.
It's a great album. I would check the Mac era albums as well. The run from Hypothetical, Critical Mass, Subsurface and Dead Reckoning is stunning.
I've never heard of that. I just checked Amazon, and they only have the mp3 album version. I wouldn't be against that. I freaking love Critical Energy. Although the DVD (which I also have) is tough to watch due to the vocal overdubs. :lol
OK, tons of excellence on Legends Of The Shires, but holy shit, that is one log album. By ears started to glaze over a bit, but I made it through!!
The vocals are so much better than Damian Wilson.

I know - it's cringey at times. But like you, I love it anyway - listening to it. Surface to Stage was a "fan club" release and I think physical copies are sold out.

Did he say pussy by the note? WTF does that even mean.

Pretty sure most people at PPUSA knows Henrik is a hound.
I believed I commented on all of this already. 3 years ago, Evergrey was at PPUSA to do a listening party for the release of The Storm. All weekend, Henrik (guitar player) was on the prowl for some tang everywhere and with anyone. So, after he did his solo, and shredded for quite a bit of it (on Cram's vid), and Tom commented that "he thinks he's getting paid by the note", I shouted out he was getting "pussy by the note". And, later in the evening at the Artmore after party, he was chattin up a few of the finer ladies.
So, all in proper context.
Nothing like shouting out an inside joke at a venue with 1000 people crammed into it :rollin

I got a LOT of footage of Caligula's Horse. Since I ended up sitting with a decent view, just figured I'd let the camera roll as I drank my vodka club and enjoyed the show. I figured people would really enjoy seeing that song as long as it is to record :lol It certainly was one of the best, if not the best, single song of the festival.
:sadpanda:
That was hard to watch Glenn's video. Feel terrible for them all.
I'm also glad the announcement came, but sad for the festival. I'll absolutely be keeping my tickets for next year and chipping in when the Go Fund Me is set up.
It sounds like Mindmaze and Darkwater are in for next year based on Facebook posts.

Tossed it a few bucks too, wanna make sure it's around whenever I decide to get off my ass and make the trip.
I'll make my own damn conga line. In the courtyard. With blackjack, and hookers
