I don't normally participate in long form threads here due to time restraints, but now I have the time, energy, and desire to run a roulette! I have never participated in one of these, so I apologize in advance if I do something wrong or out of the norm. For simplicity's sake, I am using TAC's rules as a template.
1. Nothing complicated. 10 people (+/- depending on interest)
2. 8 rounds.
3. No eliminations
4. Scoring from 1-10 points per song
5. Submit by Wednesday Night, my thoughts and rankings posted Sunday night.
6. Submit your song however it best works for you. If it doesn't work well for me, I will update this.
7. If you are torn between 2 songs for a round, I will allow everyone to use a Wild Card, which means you can send two, and I'll use the best one. You can only use this Wild Card ONCE.
Sign up now! More details to come!
Stuff I love, and am saturated on:
• Classic Rock. When I was growing up in the PNW in the early 90s and grunge was taking over everything, I was confounding my friends by listening to stuff like The Wall and Quadrophenia. I still love, and listen to, classic rock today. My wheelhouse, my go-to music.
Stuff I love to listen to, without really identifying with particular artists:
• Techno. I love to dance (said the straight, white, married, 40 year old). And I can still dance till 4am when the techno is good.
• Disco. Fuck off. It’s awesome. And see above.
Stuff I enjoy listening to, but am far from saturated on:
• Prog-Metal.
• Symphonic Metal.
• 80s glam/hair metal.
Stuff I hate: Rap and country. Yes I am that person. And jazz.
Stuff I hate that dtf.org likes:
• Genesis, King Crimson, Marillion, lots of growlie stuff, Genesis.
Stuff I am ambivalent about: Everything else. I am clueless about what is popular these days. I know there is a singer named Taylor Swift. I could pick her out of a line-up of average-looking blondes. I couldn’t name or identify one of her songs.
Bands I am saturated on:
- Dream Theater and all Mike Portnoy-related projects.
- Ayreon, Iron Maiden/Solo Bruce, Circus Maximus, Deep Purple, Nightwish, Queensryche, Sym X, Within Temptation
- Any major artist in the "classic rock" genre or any classic rock radio staples and one-hit wonders Don McLean, "American Pie." .
- Any major artist that got heavy rotation on MTV in the 80s.
Bands I want to get in to more:
- Kamelot, Epica, other symphonic metal artists
- Second tier and lesser known rock/meal bands from the 80s and 90s - think (sorry Bosk) Y&T.

I've had me the roulette itch for a while. Don't know much about your tastes, but I've got an internet connection and figured 'what the hell?'
I'm in like Flynn.
-
The roulette game is picking up at a time when I really can't commit to one :\
I'd love to join but I should probably stand aside at this point, until I have time to go all in. I'll follow along for sure though.
-
Wanna see banned list first so I have some idea of what your tastes are before I go ahead and send some awful metal you'll hate
-
Wanna see banned list first so I have some idea of what your tastes are before I go ahead and send some awful metal you'll hate
Good call. I actually struggled with your roulette dude as I had a limited amount that I thought you'd actually like, that you hadn't already heard. Damn you :getoffmylawn:
If Cool Chris's banned list gives me plenty of options I could possibly enter :corn :corn :corn
-
Pardon the dumb question, but the "Banned" list is my list of stuff I don't like/want to hear?
-
banned list is artists you're familiar with & know a decent amount of stuff from
i color code my banned list with stuff i like/dislike too but that's not really necessarily, the goal is more to get a sense of what kind of music you actually do like & which artists can't be sent because you already know them
-
Pardon the dumb question, but the "Banned" list is my list of stuff I don't like/want to hear?
No, it's more like a list of all the stuff you already love and listen to. It's all the stuff that is 'banned' because you don't want to be receiving songs you already know. We can then also get an idea of your tastes.
To be fair you can also add bands to your banned list that you don't want to be sent. Like, my banned list was all the bands off my iPod but I could've added something like Guns n Roses as I really don't like them and wouldn't want to receive something by them!
-
Makes sense. Will post updates on banned list, stuff I like, and more later tonight.
-
Hey I guess I can join this. I have plenty of terrible music for you to hate.
-
I will join, too :tup want to see you band list but there is always stuff to send so I'm in
-
ME! ME! ME! ME! ME!
-
It's been too long since I played a roulette. If you'll have me, I'll join.
-
also i should said consider me tenatively in but if your banned list is all like, classic rock and lighter prog metal i won't have much to send so :lol
-
I'm not sure if our tastes are really a match, but I'd like to join!
-
The OP is mildly helpful. I suppose if I go a couple layers deep into my library I won't run in to any problems. Usually, people post an actual list of bands that equates to "don't bother sending cuz I already know them".
Do you have a last.fm profile by any chance?
-
You must hate Genesis a lot :lol
-
i am gonna take that as "don't send any growls, ever, or you'll get a 0/10" then
okay. well. i have some stuff at least :lol
-

I do not, but I will update my post with more detail later.
I don't hate all growlie stuff. My limited experience has just not been favorable.

I'm in if there's room!

BROTHER!!

When I was growing up in the PNW ...
So I'm not picking on Chris because he's surely not the only one who says this, but isn't the Pacific North West redundant? I mean, they don't say Atlantic North East, right?
Isn't it clear to everyone that the North West is on the Pacific???
-
It is just something I have always heard this area referred to. *Shrug. I say it because I don't want to say what city I live in, because it wouldn't mean anything to anyone outside the state, and I don't want to say Seattle, because that isn't where I live, or even want to be associated with.
-
why don't you want to be associated with seattle :(
-
I am about 20 miles, or 1.5 hours by traffic, outside the city, and not even in the same county. It is also a not-so-subtle jab at my distaste for Seattle's politics.

Are we good to go now? Questions:
Any theme's? What submission format do you want - YouTube, Spotify, mp3s (if so, we'll need an email address to send them to)? I also like to ask people what their goals are with their Roulette. Is it to get some wicked-awesome songs you're not familiar with? Just for shits-and-giggles? Are you ok with expanding on bands you 'kinda' know, or are you wanting to discover completely new bands you know nothing about? All of the above?
Oh, and as I always say when starting a roulette.... you're all playing for 2nd place, bitches.

Good questions.
Round themes will be added to first post later this week, with round 1 to commence next week.
You can send either youtube links, the actual files, or the name/artist if on Spotify via PM (is that how everyone else does it)?
I would like to expand my musical horizons, yet at the same time, I know the genres I like and don't like, so don't try to convert me to a fan of Rap/Country/Genesis. When I get in to a band, I tend to go all-in, so will post a list of those bands later. So I would prefer to be exposed to bands I may have heard of (here, most likely) but don't know anything about.
-
Is there place for one more player? :P
-
So do we send by end of day today?
-
I was going to wait till next week, so please don't feel the need to rush.
Sacul, I will add you to the list and update later.
Ok, I updated the first post. We will commence with the first round song's due a week from today. Remember, I want to hear some good music that I haven't been exposed to so I can build up my listening library.
-
So, you're not going to do a 'banned artists' list?
The OP is quite helpful, but in the event someone does send a track you know or an artist you've heard before, is it ok to resubmit?
I can send later today, or next week. Whatever suits you best.
-
I'm still interested but don't have a ton of stuff for a few of these rounds :corn
-
I'm still interested but don't have a ton of stuff for a few of these rounds :corn
You don't need a ton, just one good song.
-
Pretty sure I'll have plenty to send in this roulette without too much deliberation. The themed rounds actually make it easier.
Chris, what are your thoughts on thrash metal? Basically, the 80's round you're likely getting thrash :metal
-
I never got in to thrash at the time. It was probably too \m/ for me. Now it is one of those things I have more appreciation for, and will enjoy at times, but won't go out of my way to listen to. Which makes it a good pick for this!
-
Round 1: Open
Round 2: Song off a live release
Round 3: Song released in the 1980s
Round 4: Instrumental
Round 5: Song with both male and female lead vocals
Round 6: Song with cookie monster vocals
Round 7: Song released in the 2010s
Round 8: Epic Round - define epic as you wish
Love the themes. I also did a Live Round. I always discovered bands through their live albums, and love live music. Everyone in my first roulette bitched about it.
-
I don't own any live releases besides like a few live bonus discs that came with cds I bought so :corn
-
I always discovered bands through their live albums...
Me too! I knew of Pink Floyd and their radio hits, but I became a huge fan after listening to Delicate Sound of Thunder of all things! Live tracks always welcome!
-
Well screw you guys. I sent my song. :lol
-
Disqualified for sending too early!
-
Love the themes. I also did a Live Round. I always discovered bands through their live albums, and love live music. Everyone in my first roulette bitched about it.
I did not! I love live albums too, and there's lots of songs that I prefer the live release over the studio.
Love these theme's as well. I'm pretty sure I know exactly what I'm sending for a couple of these rounds already. Wonder who's going to punish you with Green Carnation in the final round? :lol

-
After seeing the themes, I have a boner. This is going to be fun (although, with over 1,500 CDs, I'm not sure I have more than ten songs with "Cookie monster vocals" and if you exclude DT, maybe none. Does Lemmy count as "cookie monster"?)
-
No, pussy.
;D

HAHA. :tup

To be clear about the wild card submissions... are you going to listen to both songs equally, and simply award the higher score, or (like Tim), are you going to chose which is better after 1 submission, and use that as the entry.
Just want to be clear.
-
Was there a song length limit? Can't remember if it was mentioned anywhere. Gonna send today hopefully :tup

In the first case... you'd listen to BOTH songs 4, 5, 8 times... however many times you plan on listening to the submissions before rendering scores - then which ever song gets the higher score, that's the one that counts. In the second case, you'd listen to both songs ONCE, then decide which you like better, and listen to THAT song 4, 5, 8 times ... however many times you plan on listening to the submissions before rendering scores.
Capiche?
-
Capiche. The second option.

Hey everyone! Note that submissions are due in by Wed night, I need songs from the below:
Twosuitsluke

home
Sacul
Also, I appreciate those who are sending me actual files. This is not necessary though. If the song is on youtube or Spotify, I can find it that way.
-
Sent a band I've never sent in any previous roulette, which is sweet. I think this will be right up your street though :hat
-
Also, I appreciate those who are sending me actual files. This is not necessary though. If the song is on youtube or Spotify, I can find it that way.
I am not up on uploading tracks, so I am sending youtube links. Would you rather I email the songs?
Are you listening strictly on your computer?
-
Youtube links are fine, or just send me the name of the artist and song. I am listening to the songs on my desktop and my tablet with headphones.
-
so has this started :corn

Note: I changed a couple of the Rounds in my first post. I didn't like the restrictiveness of them. Results from Round 1 coming soon.

So it looks like a bunch of pussies complained about the cookie monster round. Damn, I had a great song lined up!
-
So it looks like a bunch of pussies complained about the cookie monster round. Damn, I had a great song lined up!
Well, I KNOW I had a great song lined up. I think people who do send a song with growlie vocals should get an extra point!

:metal
It'll bring a 5 up to a 6! :lol
-
The only complaint about the Cookie Monster round was from my delicate inner soul. You are still welcome to send growlie songs, there just isn't a round dedicated to them now.
-
Who called the wahmbulence? Was it Stadler?? ;D
NO way would I send them, especially knowing you don't like them. Me, I hate them! ;D Ruins great music.
But there was an album that came out last year, and other than Death, it was the first growlie album I've ever bought.
-
How the fuck did I miss this?
Oh well, following. I don't really have time at the moment, anyway.
So it looks like a bunch of pussies complained about the cookie monster round. Damn, I had a great song lined up!
There was a growlie round?! You amateurs would have been screwed against me!! :yarr
-
wolfking, I haven't wrapped up Round 1 yet, if you want to join in. I was going to post my results this weekend.
-
You're going to get growls regardless!
-
You're going to get growls regardless!
Of the most grotesque kind...
-
You're going to get growls regardless!
I'm in. The "real" participants will still treat it like a growlie round. I'm not a huge fan of growls, but there are lots of instances where they work appropriately.
-
I've always liked growls when it's not full on throughout the whole song. When it's used like an effect, like an emotion in that angry moment in a song.
-
I've always liked growls when it's not full on throughout the whole song. When it's used like an effect, like an emotion in that angry moment in a song.
Ditto.... 100% growls ain't for me. When it fits the theme of the music and lyrics, I can be ok with them.
-
I mean, there was a time when I couldn't stand growls. The more I got until metal though the more I realised there was amazing music I was missing out on because I couldn't get past the harsh vocals.
I remember specifically that I fell in love with a few Pantera and Children of Bodom songs. They were kind of my gateway bands that I just couldn't stop listening to. It might be easier for me because my ear is always drawn to the instrumentation, primarily. Before I knew it the harsh vocals didn't seem so harsh anymore and I couldn't imagine those bands without harsh vocals.
I'd definitely say to anyone to try and persevere, especially if they dig a band musically. I mean you never know, people's tastes can change over time. Plus, with growls and harsh vocals, there is a wide variety and you may find you can tolerate a certain style even if you hate all the others.
-
I am not good at grading things. Here, I am struggling grading each song on its own merits, versus grading it in relation to the other songs in the round. There were 3 GREAT songs and 2 very good songs this round, which made the others pale by comparison.
TAC: Innerwish - Rain of A Thousand Years
9
Really liked the music, got hooked from the beginning. The "Hey Heys" seemed contrived and cliché, but a small blemish on a near 10.
Tomislav95: Ghost - Square Hammer
8
1st listen: Eh, this is ok; 2nd listen: Pretty good; 3rd listen: I am digging this; 4,593th listen: Damn this is the catchiest song I've heard in a long time!
Jingle.boy: Magnus Karlsson - Not My Saviour
8
Solid entry. Seen the name float around dtf.org but never heard any of his work. Reminded me a little of Evergrey but better.
Shadow Ninja 2.0: Nightingale - Lucifer’s Lament
7
Good track, didn't knock my socks off, but will check out more of this band. Vocals didn't fully impress me, but worked with the song well, and certainly weren't a detriment.
Twosuitsluke: Witchcraft - If Crimson Was Your Colour
7
A great driving song. Killer riff.
Stadler: Angels and Airwaves - Secret Crowds
5
Thought I would hate it when it started, but ended up liking it more as it went on. Found myself enjoying it more without watching the video. Resolved to not watch any videos throughout this roulette.
Parama: Earthside - Mob Mentality
5
Most challenging submission to evaluate this round. At times it sounded like a metal band decided to write Bond theme. Which could be a good thing. Someone make this happen! Wanted to like it more than I did. Not a bad song, but didn't fully resonate with me. Felt like it was trying to be too grandiose for the sake of grandiosity. Will check out other songs from them though.
Elite: Caligula's Horse - The City Has No Empathy
4
Band sounds like they have potential.
Sacul: Janelle Monae - Tightrope
3
Well here is a Clayton Kershaw curveball. This is so far out of left field, I am not sure what ballpark I'm in. This…. just isn't my thing, I don't even know how to rate this song on its own merits. I wouldn't give it a second listen if not for this thread. So after a couple spins, my call..... high and outside.
home: Mew - The Zookeeper's Boy
2
Didn't care for this at all. Those high and whiny vocals… aiieee!
Kingshmegland: Mr. Invisible - Thank You Scientist
1
Terrible. Stopped after a minute. Revisited later. Still terrible. Way to kick off week 1 of the roulette like the Pats kicked off week 1 of the NFL season.
-
Growls: I don't hate them, yes sometimes they worl well and I enjoy them. I just don't like them enough to devote a whole round to it. I will welcome any and all growlie songs and judge them fairly.
-
lol @ mr. invisible getting a 1 wow :corn
everything below my score is the stuff i actually know here, nice
i'm half-tempted to send this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZL-yYWxQMA) for the live round but pretty sure i'd get booted out of the roulette if i did
-
Wow, never seen such a low scores for Earthside, Caligula's Horse and Thank You, Scientist! So just to be clear, you never actually managed to even listen all the way through Mr. Invisible??
-
i'm half-tempted to send this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZL-yYWxQMA) for the live round but pretty sure i'd get booted out of the roulette if i did
Oh, I never realised they released a live album. I should check that out :lol
-
:lol
That one-line review!
-
Cheers for the invite earlier Chris. I still would have turned it down as I'm pretty busy at the moment. Some of those reviews at the bottom were funny as hell too.
I mean there were rumors, but I was definitely not expecting it.
That's just fucking awful man, I feel and hope things pick up Jon. Fuck companies that can just do this shit. The more time goes on the more corporations care less and less about humans and it's all about the bottom dollar.
-
Man, this Thank You Scientist is some original funky shit. I wasn't keen after a minute either Chris, but you probably should have kept listening.
The chorus is great and the verses sound like some old school Michael Jackson or something.
-
YEAH, wtf! :lol That song and album is killer!
-
Thank You, Scientist are easily in my top 5 DTF discoveries! Great, great band :hat
-
I'll take it. Clearly, you're more of a 'metal' guy based on these results.
Tim... great submission. One of my favorite songs from 2016
-
I did listen to all the songs all the way though, and not just once. My reviews are meant to be a little silly, but an accurate representation of how I felt about each song. I didn't care for that Thank You Scientist at all, and there were so many other good songs that it just got buried regardless.
-
No need to explain Chris. Not your cup of tea. I miscalculated.
-
Kingshmegland
1
Way to kick off week 1 of the roulette like the Pats kicked off week 1 of the NFL season.
:rollin *
* Laughing at the Pats reference, NOT at Kingshmegland

Is that Mr. Invisible song a clear and good representation of the whole album?
-
I did listen to all the songs all the way though, and not just once. My reviews are meant to be a little silly, but an accurate representation of how I felt about each song. I didn't care for that Thank You Scientist at all, and there were so many other good songs that it just got buried regardless.
That's sweet man, no need to justify. Loved the simple and to the point writeups.
-

There is heavier songs on the album.

Holy moly! Okay, need to check out more of these guys then for sure.

Pffff what whiny vocals, mesmerizing vocals you mean!
Going to fail again with some funk :hat

Resolved to not watch any videos throughout this roulette.
I think I see where you're coming from here - an official video could hurt or help the score, so you're going on sound only... especially since not all submissions would have an official video release. However, for this live round... most (all?) songs will invariably have a live video release as well, I'd think watching the 'concert' footage (at least once) would be warranted.
Sending shortly.
-
Alright. I need to hit one out of the park. Sent!
-
Sent the round winner, unless anyone beat me to the punch :corn

Correct. With new music, I want to experience it for the first time on a purely aural level, and judge the music accordingly. I don't want any other (mis)conceptions about the band to taint my scoring. In that one instance, I thought the video was marring my opinion of the song, and realized I enjoyed it more not watching the video.
For this round, I will only listen to the song first, and then watch the live video, if there is one, on subsequent listens,
-
Unfortunately, there are no live videos of my song. I mean there are plenty of them, but just not THAT version, which is really the only version that counts.
-
I actually sent a video which I usually wouldn't so
Sorry about that :P

Same for me as well.

Sucks for you guys. Song and video sent.
Assess will be kicked. No bubble-gum chewing though.

So basically what you're saying is that your song is not strong enough on it's own, it needs some fancy shmancy video to help sell it?

So blind people can't go to concerts you insensitive bastard!
;D

Fuck 'em. Pretty sure I could elude them if they got testy. :lol
-
Great stuff this round. 5 songs are at least 8s, if not higher. Am planning to get results up Friday night. Just waiting on Sacul.
-
heck yeah 3/10

Parama, yours is the song I'm having the hardest time rating.

Mine didn't need a video. :)

Automatic loser of the round.

:lol
Meeting Nick really threw you off Home.

He probably enjoyed that Heineken he had left and then some. :lol

Round 2 - Live Tracks. Tried to rank each entry based on the song itself and the performance equally. I tried not to compare performances as live songs are always going to sound different based on era, recording, venue, etc.... Full disclosure, I didn't listen to any of the studio versions of the song prior to assigning scores.
Jingle.boy: Avantasia - Promised Land (from The Flying Opera)
10
The roulette's first 10. And I'm all out of bubble gum.
Stadler: Rainbow - All Night Long (from David's Hall 1983)
9
Couldn't type three words in an email to my boss while listening to this with the amount of headbanging going on.
TAC: UFO - Rock Bottom (from Strangers in the Night)
8
I liked the music more than I liked the song, if you buy that. The song was good, but the music was a virtual clinic.
Shadow Ninja 2.0: While Heaven Wept - Vessel (from Triumph:Tragedy:Transcendence)
8
Never heard of this band. Impressive first listen.
Parama: Pain of Salvation - Iter Impius (from Be Live)
8
Only have heard a small smattering of PoS, none of it sounded like this. From my limited knowledge, Be is a concept album, which makes it a little different evaluating a song on its own (correct me if I am wrong here)
kingshmegland: Sieges Even - Tidal (from Playgrounds)
7
Solid entry from a band I've never heard of.
Sacul: Anathema - Untouchable Part 1 (from Universal)
7
Good submission, but falls short of the top tier of songs I got this round.
Tomislav95: Iced Earth - A Question of Heaven (from Alive in Athens)
6
Didn't care for the vocals, but the music was awesome.
Twosuitsluke: The Dear Hunter - Home (from The Color Spectrum)
5
Never given this band a good listen despite seeing it all over dtf.org, glad it got submitted. Good song and performance, but tough competition here.
Elite: Pain of Salvation - Handful of Nothing (from Ending Themes)
4
Not great, not terrible, not memorable.
home: Vulfpeck - Animal Spirits
3
Maybe in the same county as FunkyTown, but definitely outside the city limits. Still, got my foot tapping a little bit.
-
BE is a concept album but most of the songs are confined to their own spaces regardless. Iter Impius is basically one of the fan favorites though (placed near the top in the recent PoS survivor, so :lol)
i've no clue what to send for most of these rounds so i'll try to scrounge up something
-
I was hoping for a bit better than a 5 but I'll take it.
I think this kind of confirms that I need to send stuff with a classic rock/metal vibe to win. Not sure if that's how I want to play it? I might just send stuff out of your comfort zone (but not too far out) to see if I can find you something you like.
I'll send when I get a chance.
Also, respect to home, flying that Vulfpeck flag in the face of 3/10 scores :lol
-
i sent my next three 2/10's, should be good times :metal
i have like literally nothing for round 7 though. the only 80's albums i have are... wdadu, a fates warning album, and operation mindcrime. like that's literally it. nothing else
-
You can't not care for Matt Barlow's vocals :o but at least you liked some of it
-
Full disclosure, I didn't listen to any of the studio versions of the song prior to assigning scores.
Well this is not right, you listened to the studio version of my song. Now your pm asking me which version of the song you should listen to makes a lot more sense. :lol
sent some Roosterwave :hat
-

I struggle with this in almost every roulette I'm in. I've opted now to send what I like in the hopes that someone will discover something. I'm not going to pretend I'm something I'm not and send a bunch of death metal that I pulled off the interwebs randomly. I have enough music in my collection that even for banned artists, I can probably send SOMETHING that the host hasn't heard before.

The Striking Viking comes through for me.
@Stadler/TAC... nice selections. How did I know you'd be sending UFO? Chris... are you going to post the standings? My be the only time I have honors. :lol
-
:lol
-
Alright then.. I'm going for lowest score and shortest write-ups from now on :tup
-
A short write-up isn't my way of being dismissive of a song. I am just not one for long reviews or details about how a song resonates with me.

Wasn't Be, or excuuuuse me, BE a bit divisive among the PoS fan base?
-
I mean probably more than the albums preceding it but less so than the Road Salt albums for sure
-
That's a high score for All Night Long, and Chris, how have you never heard that song before? That does not compute.
And J Boy, you better sig those standings while you can...

I had not heard that song before. My knowledge of Rainbow is minimal, as it is with UFO (I only know Doctor Doctor and only know that because of Maiden's cover).
-
Man that's cool that you can get turned onto older bands you just never checked out. Ok. Going to send a song soon.
-
Some bands just flew right under my radar. Of course this was pre-internet days, and I had very few friends who listened to the same type of music as me, so unless I heard it on the radio or stumbled across it somehow, it would have been easy for me to miss.
-
Tomislav95: Iced Earth - A Question of Heaven (from Alive in Athens)
6
Didn't care for the vocals, but the music was awesome.
Oh wow. This is one of my all time fave live performances from anyone ever!

I hear ya. There are lots of bands that were just off my radar as well - Rainbow and UFO being a couple of them. And as Kade found out in my last roulette, W.A.S.P.

It helps if your radar is turned on.

Bear in mind, gents, that I submitted a (somewhat) rare live version with Joe Lynn Turner on vocals. It was a b-side to the "Can't Let You Go" single (I think) off of Bent Out Of Shape. Even if he had heard the song, I would bet a steak dinner he didn't hear that version.
-
So you're saying you'd stake a dinner on it?

Sent. I'm really excited to see what score I'll get for this, it could really be anything from 1 to 10 :P
-
yes, that is in fact how Chris' scoring works :corn
i feel like i should get a pretty decent score for what i sent this round but i'll probably end up with my worst score yet

Tim, nobody lives upstairs anymore in the house. Sucka!

:yarr
-
i mean, unless i'm wrong and you're gonna give out a 0 one of these rounds
-
I try and be honest in my scores. They are graded on a bit of a curve. I already have a potential 9 and 10 this round, so the bar is set high by those entries. A song would have to be really bad to get a zero. But then I haven't scored home's entry, which had vocals from a chicken.
-
Sent.
Sorry if I'm a little late. I didn't put anywhere near enough thought into this entry. Quietly confident though
-
Sent.

Sorry Sacul, Twosuitsluke beat you to the punch on your entry. And a solid one it was.
So please submit a new song, and I need Elite's song and I will be ready to post the results.

Saculite strikes again
also nice one luke :lol
-
Well, had to delve into one of the few fogey roulettes I participated on before to send some stuff that got me a good score. Re-sent.
-
Saculite strikes again
also nice one luke :lol
:hat
I felt like I copped out a little on this one. I stand by the song and I love it but I knew it was likely an easy score. Gonna think of something a little more 'out there' for my next entry.
-
I only know that band as an old co-worker was having a midlife crisis and wouldn't ever shut up about Myles. She even named her self-pleasure toy My Little Electric Savoir.
-
ahh, after burger
luke are you excited for EP round results
i know i am excited to share them like jesus christ i am tired of hosting my roulette but i'm D O N E now

Jingle.boy: Lords of Black - Ghost of You
10
Not a perfect 10, but a 10 nonetheless. Joining Innerwish and Ghost as my top 'Gotta check out more of these guys' from this roulette so far.
kingshmegland: Forgotten Suns - In Harms Way
9
Afraid this would be general forgettable prog-metal but was impressed with the musicianship and songwriting.
TAC: Glass Mind - Your Name In Silence
9
Great song, expected whiny vocals based on TAC's comments but I thought they were great and suited the song well. Heard some subtle DT influences.
Twosuitsluke: Alter Bridge - Blackbird
8
Hit the ground an average 5. Then the chorus hit, ok, maybe a 6. Guitar solo starts, damn, at least a 7. Then the outro made it an 8.
Parama: Baroness - The Line Between
7
Solid, fun rocker. I like how this song doesn't sound like it is from any particular era. It could fit in and been popular in the 90s, 00s, or today.
Sacul: Throne of Chaos - The Window
7
Good song. Was afraid it was going to get too proggy around 2:40, but it turned out to be a nice musical break that added complexity to the song.
Stadler: Night Ranger - Penny
6
"Penny I got your number, You know you gave it to me." I've had this happen to me…. Drunk chick gives you her number at the club and when you call her she doesn't have any clue who you are. Awkwardness ensues. Have you ever realized you never hear the word "Ensuing" without it being directly followed by the word "Kickoff?"
Elite: Stone Temple Pilots - Trippin' On a Hole in a Paper Heart
6
I know STP and that one hit song they had, or did they have more? No idea, but this one didn’t sound familiar at all. This is what I would think of as typical mid-90s alt rock. Which I never really got in to. Cool instrumental break, sounded jarringly out of place upon first listen, but when I listened to it again I thought it was really well done.
Shadow Ninja 2.0: Editors - Munich
5
Kinda cool, but nothing memorable.
Tomislav95: Paramore - Hard Times
2
Sounds like a lower-tier dance-y song from the 80s. Maybe intentionally? I wouldn't have liked it then, and don't like it now.
home: Igorrr - Vegetable Soup
1
Music was ok, then a rooster or a chicken came on. Who incidentally gave the best vocal performance on this song.

Jingle and TAC get some separation after Round 3, but there is a log jam not too far behind them.
Round 4: Instrumentals. People on here, at least with DT, tend to go ga-ga over instrumentals. I never did. I feel like vocals give a song focus, a voice (figuratively) and most instrumentals, while they can be good, are worse off for that lack of "voice." Challenge: Issued!
-
Twosuitsluke: Alter Bridge - Blackbird
8
Hit the ground an average 5. Then the chorus hit, ok, maybe a 6. Guitar solo starts, damn, at least a 7. Then the outro made it an 8.
Nice. It probably was a bit of cop out sending this song but I'll try and mix it up a bit from here on out.
Parama: Baroness - The Line Between
7
Solid, fun rocker. I like how this song doesn't sound like it is from any particular era. It could fit in and been popular in the 90s, 00s, or today.
Not sure I would've sent that song but nice, nonetheless. Incidentally, I was thinking of sending a Baroness instrumental in the next round (as I think their instrumentals are some of their best tracks). FYI, I would've gone for either Green Theme or Stretchmaker :metal
-
That Glass Mind album is killer. They turned into an instrumental band with their last album and EP. Never really understood why - I loved their vocals. Good thing I wasn't going to use the instrumental from that album - I think it was #5 option on my list.
Forgotten Suns are also awesome. I don't play that album enough, but every song on there is 4 and 5 stars.

My triumph will become a reality soon enough.
-
Either The Line Between or Chlorine & Wine would be my fav baroness song so that's why I sent it :P
Also yeah blackbird is alright
Still think it goes on a bit longer than it needs to though
Also geez poor home :lol
-
Kingshmegland gave me that Forgotten Sons track in my roulette. That's a great tune.
Lords Of Black, huh? That is a good album. A 10 though?? Hmmm..

Yeah, grading instrumentals can be tough.

Oh damn still haven't sent my entry.
Really? That's a shock. ;D
-
Oh damn still haven't sent my entry.
Same. I'll have to get on this tonight.
-
Remember that I am actually ahead of schedule. My Round 3 Results are due this weekend, Round 4 submissions are due Wednesday the 4th.
As TAC said, these rankings are harder for me. But good submissions this round so far. Lots of artists I've read about, mainly on here, but not familiar with their work.
-
Elite: Stone Temple Pilots - Trippin' On a Hole in a Paper Heart

haha, yeah, they had a few hits including this one.
Blackbird is killer indeed, great send. I don't know much here besides that. Bolsters sent me Glass Mind in my roulette and it was pretty good. From what I've heard of Lords of Black, it didn't impress me, but might be time to try again since The Ferrymen have come around for me.
-
Twosuitsluke, Sacul, Stadler, Elite... "The waiting is the hardest part...."
-
Sending tonight, I promise!
-
Don't get John Caged
-
What??? Are you talking about this being my response if someone sends me a song with growlie vocals?
-
I can't decide!!!
-
Everyone who doesn't submit on time in my roulette submits John Cage - 4'33" by default, which is 4 minutes 33 seconds of silence
-
Who is John Cage?
-
No longer waiting on me, bitches.
-
I thought John Cage was the guy from Mortal Kombat. The Wikipedia tells me he was a pretentious composer who's biggest claim to fame is not writing anything and passing it off as music.
Stadler, do you realize how close you came to being disqualified from this Roulette? :getoffmylawn: I will overlook your transgression, this time, as I was somewhat pleased with your submission after my first (blind) listen.

What's Mortal Kombat?

What's Mortal Kombat?

What's Mortal Kombat?
Trolling??
If not can someone please send the MK theme tune in TAC's roulette??? for the love of God!

I've heard of Mortal Kombat, in name only. It's a video game, right? But I have definitely never heard of John Cage.
-
Correct, tournament fighter game big in the 90s, especially due to the blood, which was pretty rare back in those days. I was a Street Fighter II guy myself.
Hadn't heard of John Cage either.
Waiting for 2 more songs. So far, I have a 10, a 9, nothing below a 5, and one song from the Band Who Will Not Be Named.

Can't win if you don't play.
Go big or go home.
It's all about the journey.
I'm running out of cheesy reality TV aphorisms. But I struggled with this round for days, back and forth, not wanting to resort to the easy (any of 15 Blackmore instrumentals that I have/love) and I kept coming back to THAT SONG. And I figured... what do I have to lose?
-
Well, shit. I sent a song that's not an instrumental apparently (didn't look well enough...). Will send again in a bit!!

So glad you specified 1986 Kelly McGillis. Best thing I've read today. :rollin :rollin
-
Easy Stadler, you submitted a highly questionable song, by an artist I have repeatedly documented I hate, including in this very thread. So, no, you do not get Kelly McGillis c.1986 making you a sandwich, to say nothing of falling for you.
On topic, you know what always bothered me? Why does Iceman bite down when Maverick tells him he is dangerous? Is he trying to show how tough he is? How nice and bright his teeth are?

HAHA, that got a laugh out loud. Sorry, I got too big for my britches there for a second. :)
As for Iceman, that's a good question that I don't have the answer for. That might be "acting". :)
-
I haven't decided on a round 6 song yet but I'm thinking it may end up another instrumental, cause sending instrumental stuff is the only way I can really send some of the bands I'm big into right now :B
-
Round 4: Instrumentals, or The Log Jam. Definitely the hardest round to score, top to bottom so far.
TAC: Heavenly - Hands Of Darkness
10
Superb blend of musicianship, creativity, melody. Everything a metal instrumental should be.
Jingle.boy: Beyond the Bridge - Triumph of Irreality
9
Thought this song doesn't really get going till about 1:30. From there, it is gold.
Twosuitsluke: The Black Mages - Force Your Way
7
This was cool. They get in, rock, get out. Nothing extraneous or unnecessarily wanky. Thought the space-y effects weren't necessary.
Parama: East of the Wall - Precious Memories
7
Didn't like the main riff enough to score it any higher. The riffage starting at 3:30 was killer though.
Tomislav95: Mark Knopfler - Going Home Local Hero Theme (Night in London)
7
Sounded mediocre at first, but kept feeling like coming back to it, and liked it more and more each time.
Stadler: Genesis - Wot Gorilla?
7
Stadler asked me to listen to the song without knowing the artist, which I did and evaluated as such. This is a nice, concise instrumental with some good musicianship. The keys alone make this a good song. The drumming make it less so. This is a 6, but +1 point for going with a risky pick.
Sacul: Air - La Femme d'Argent
7
Best youtube comment: "If I owned a space station I would play this in the lobby." Not my bag at all, but I dug it.
Elite: Riverside - Reality Dream III
7
Solid 7. This band has been on my "Check them out" list for a while. This song doesn't dissuade me of this.
kingshmegland: Frost* - Hyperventilate
6
Feel as though I should like this more than I do. Just didn't fully connect with it.
Shadow Ninja 2.0: Buckethead - Sled Ride
4
Not a song I see myself coming back to, but a fun little ditty.
home: Sigur Rós - 03 Untitled (Samskeyti)
4
How the hell do you pronounce this band's name? Decent song, piano melody got a little repetitive.

Halfway home! Highlights so far: Innerwish, Lords of Black, Ghost.
Round 5: Songs with both a male and female on vocals (meaning more than just Oohs and Aahs backing-type vocals)
-
I'll gladly take the 9, but 6 for Hyperventilate is wrong... just wrong. That would have been my #2 choice to send, so I'm glad I went with Triumph of Irreality - and yes, the first 90 seconds is a slow build.
Stads... you know what it takes to send Genesis in this roulette?
Now... how much of a chance do I want to take in this round??

To each his own but yeah, that instrumental kicks all ass. Just not Chris's cup of tea.
-
imo that beyond the bridge album gets better as it goes on, the last few tracks are stellar but the stuff near the start is still at least pretty good, wouldn't call that particular song a 9 myself though
also samskeyti is beautiful :'(
-
I'll take that. The Black Mages have generally been more of a miss than a hit, when I've sent them previously.
Some great songs here. Sad to see Buckethead and Sigur Ros scoring so low :tdwn
-
Of course I've heard of them, I've heard their music, I know even a little about them (they're from Iceland, lots of falsetto vocals...) but I've never heard their name said. How DO you pronounce it?
-
Dunno, I say it Sig-oor Ross. I'm probably wrong though :loser:
-
Well a 4 is still twice as high as my best score so far :P
Also about the pronounciation, from their website: si-ur rose (the i is like the i in "hit". "rose" is said very quickly) :https://download.sigur-ros.co.uk/sigur.mp3 (https://download.sigur-ros.co.uk/sigur.mp3)

For the record, I did not submit this: https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=john+lennon+chuck+berry&view=detail&mid=23C24C1F40DB54C5E98823C24C1F40DB54C5E988&FORM=VIRE

I'm at a loss with what is wrong with "Bing"? I use Explorer, because it's a pain in the ass to load alternate browsers on the computer (it's an old work computer that they just let me keep). I type "john lennon chuck berry" in the box at the top, and then on the next page, click the link that most closely looks like what I'm looking for.
Later in the video, at the start of "Johnny B. Goode", Chuck looks at John, says "Johnny!" and points at him. "Be good." and starts. Really cool. It's also really cool to see John Lennon, one of the all-time greats, and the guy that by all accounts was the driving force in the early years of the Beatles and got them to the point where anyone could actually say with a straight face "We're bigger than Jesus", fawning over Chuck like a school boy.
-
went ahead and sent out the rest of my roulette entries for this one so i can comfortably sit back and lose with style
i basically have no clue what you like and dislike besides "growls r bad" & my pick for round 7 is probably gonna be rejected but what the hell i tried & got to send no less than three songs off albums with growls on them
i'm also one step closer to my dream of having sent the entirety of The Apologist across all roulettes I've participated in. except I won't do that because I don't ever think tracks 9 & 10 will be worth sending but I've sent tracks 1-6 and 11 & 12 now thus far
-
I'm at a loss with what is wrong with "Bing"?
Just busting you because Bing is used by you and about 7 other people. :lol
It was a very cool video - Yoko's wailing notwithstanding.

If you click the link to the in my post you can hear the pronounciation (it's an audiofile on their website). It's soft but not completely silent if I hear it correctly.
-
Basically the same as if you read it in Spanish :lol
-
I don't know how to read anything in Spanish.
Having a hard time scoring this round. No 10s and no 1s to set the curve. Everything is getting bunched up in the middle. Waiting for Sacul and Twosuitsluke to wrap this baby up.
-
I sent TWO 10's, so 20?
:neverusethis:
Interested to see which song you chose. I'm assuming it'll be the more recent one. I just wanted to share the older one with you, being a Classic Rock guy.
-
oh yeah i forgot this roulette has wildcards too
maybe i'll send one
-
Yes Parama, this might be a good round to send a Wild Card.

I've sent a wildcard in this round too. Highly likely I'll need to resend one...or both :corn

Sent.
-
Round 5:
Tomislav95: Vanden Plas - Vision 8ight - Misery Affection
9
Great song, the slow build was so nice, the vocal harmonies were great. Excellent lyrics. Is this song representative of this band's material?
Elite: The Devin Townsend Project - Supercrush!
9
One of the top names I seem to see on dtf.org that I have never checked out! I am generally not a fan of the "Wall of Sound" approach, but this song makes it work! Whoa, is that Anneke vanLongname singing? I can't decide if I think she is hot or not! Sometimes she is amazingly beautiful, others she is very pedestrian. Maybe she is a Two-Face #Seinfeld! Anyway, oh yes, the song! I really enjoyed this! A song that is going to bust your balls, but do it with finesse! Note: Twosuitsluke wanted to sbumit this, but Elite came in first!
Stadler: Alice In Chains - Brother
8
Grew up in the birthplace of Grunge (and Heart), but wasn't in to it during its ascendancy. I didn't like eveything that AiC released, and this one eluded me. But when Alice does it right, like they do here, they are the best at what they did. Maybe a 'hot take' here, but Jerry Cantrell is one of the most talented musician/songwriters to come out of the 90s, and for as big as AiC made it, his talents were held back here, he could have gone on to even bigger things.
Jingle.boy: Firewind - Breaking the Silence
8
Nothing particularly memorable about this song, and it didn't do anything to distinguish itself in this round, but it is a rocker and made me want more of this band. A safe pick with me, 88 mph fastball down the middle; but only worth a double, maybe stretched to a triple.
Twosuitsluke: Oceans of Slumber - Winter
8
Note: This is Twosuitsluke's Wild Card. His first submission was Steven Wilson - Pariah. It is also this round's Blake's Brass Balls entry, with the Scott Farrell vocals. Dare I say I liked how they worked in the song, providing a pleasant counterbalance to the powerful female vocals. Great music, soloing, all around great song.
Sacul: Steven Wilson - Routine
8
Beautiful music from SW, Some of the best I've heard from him in my limited experience with his material. I've been critical of his whiny 'Peter Gabriel in Genesis' vocal style, but when it works, it works well, as it does here.
TAC: Alice Cooper - Millie and Billie
7
This made me think of Meat Loaf. Not the food. Nothing makes me think of meatloaf. Thankfully. This song is much more appealing than meatloaf. I get why they closed the way they did, but I thought it could have either ended on a stronger note, or a more cacophonous one. This one ended on a bit of a whimper. Note; TAC's Wild Card was Project Aegis-Angel In The Ashes.
Parama: Bodies of Water - Under the Pines
5
That was an annoyingly jarring keyboard intro. Is Derek Sherinian in this band? Intro was longer than it should have been. Gained momentum after that and got better, unfortunately that was half-way through the song.
Shadow Ninja 2.0: Diablo Swing Orchestra - Voodoo Mon Amour
5
Didn't think I'd make it through the first listen. But did, then came back to it later, and my ill feelings went away. 99 times out of 100 I dislike horns in my rock. This might be the 1 though, they made it work. The vocals were the weak link for me in this song, which hurts on around with a vocal theme.
kingshmegland: Beyond the Bridge - The Struggle
5
What was up with the opening vocals? The gal vocalist came in to help, and turned it in to a good song. The last third of the song it felt like they were singing over each other, instead of with each other. I really liked the music though, and that kept my ears intrigued. I liked the Beyond the Bridge instrumental I got last round much more than this song.
home: Iamthemorning - Lighthouse
4
Piano reminded me of my sister's piano recitals I went to when we were kids. Not a knock on the talent, just not what I want in my music. Really liked the change at 4:00, from there I enjoyed it much more. Up till then it was a little too weak for me.

Coming out of the midway point, the top two continue their stride. Will they risk an extra push to secure a victory? Will they play it safe and hope the other one falters? Will someone catch them down the home stretch? This is where champions are made.
Round 6 is open. Fire away!
-
i'd considered oceans of slumber but figured the harsh vocals would be too much of a turnoff, shows how wrong i am i guess :lol
-
Even though Chad is still leading, lol @ him for not being the one to send VP!!
Chris, VP are amazing, get into 'em!
-
i'd considered oceans of slumber but figured the harsh vocals would be too much of a turnoff, shows how wrong i am i guess :lol
That's why I used it as my wildcard. I thought the harsh vocals would kill it for you Chris. Glad you liked it but also a bit gutted I didn't manage to send Supercrush! before Elite :getoffmylawn:

This absolutely.
Totally fair assessment of my song. Definitely played it safe with that pick. And King... dude, I already sent Beyond the Bridge! Your 17,000 song library surely had other male/female tracks.
-
The Beyond the Bridge got so many rave reviews, but I just could never get into it. I've tried so many times, it just did nothing. Might have to get the cd out and try again.
-
So Chris, do you mean to tell me that Project Aegis would've scored less than a 7? That does not compute.
-
So Chris, do you mean to tell me that Project Aegis would've scored less than a 7? That does not compute.
It probably would have been a 7. I gave each song an initial listen and went with Alice as 1) it was your primary choose and 2) it was the more unique choice, and 3) I wouldn't have ranked the alternate any higher.
-
Hmmm. The Project Aegis is an 11!
-
Got half my entries for Round 6 already, and everything so far is at least a 7. Keep 'em coming guys!
-
Have I sent? I can't remember.
-
Not that I have seen.
-
Sent the band that I now consider my #1 band of all time!!
-
Have I sent? I can't remember.
Good to see that your participants are well invested in your roulette Chris.

shadow ninja is like that in every roulette tbh
-
Sent.
-
Just waiting for Home now, who hopefully isn't bowing out to secure the number one draft pick in the next roulette.
-
Oh oops, I though I'd sent already
Ok, sent a song I discovered five minutes ago :P
-
Way to devote some time to your decision! :p Results tonight if you guys are lucky.

Well, I thought about my previous entries and that didn't work :p

Probably via the same amount of effort that a participant can send a song he's only heard once. ;D
-
To be fair I might just look up obscure 80's songs and send them without even listening to them for next round, I have to nothing
-
It's a whole decade, it isn't the most restrictive category ya know :p
-
Yeah I literally do not listen to any music from this decade though :lol
-
Yeah, I don't think I have anything from the 80s either, at least nothing that everyone hasn't already heard.
I'll dig up something.
-
Round 6:
TAC: Theocracy - Laying The Demon To Rest
10
TAC, sensing the lead in sight, comes strong in this round. This is about as epic as a sub-10 minute song can be. I haven't said much about lyrics because I usually listen to a song's music a couple times before I really begin to absorb the lyrics. After this song set in, I went in to the lyrics deeper to see if they were as good as I thought they were. They were.
Shadow Ninja 2.0: Triosphere - Driven
9
Loved the female vocals, very unique. Feminine, but with a hard edge to them. Add some killer riffs, and you have a winner! Short, concise, punches you in the face and pulls a Seinfeld, leaves you wanting more.
kingshmegland: Fates Warning - The Ghosts Of Home
9
Dabbled in FW back when I was getting in to the genre and didn't see the appeal. I started at the beginning, and John Arch was partially responsible for my lack of interest. I knew they got another vocalist down the road, but I didn't care enough about the music to care at that point. This is by far better than any FW I remember listening to. Did they get that much better this far in to their career?
Jingle.boy: Echoes - Rude Awakening
8
"Cut the music! What I'd like to have right now is for all you fat, out-of-shape, dtf.org sweathogs to keep the noise down while I show the ladies what a real man looks like." This was great. But who are these guys? Do they even have a Wikipedia page? A lot going on in a 6:30 song, cacophonous, mellow, powerful. Vocalist hit every section perfectly, impressive considering the variety of parts.
Parama: Venenum - Trance of Death: Part II: Metanoia Journey
8
Parama says "Excellent riffs, great sense of atmosphere and buildup, and some great melodies too. " Sums it up perfrectly for me. Some killer riffage, and excellent musicianship all around. Of course the first YT comment I see is:" Crazy drumming skill. It's like Phil Collins plays Death Metal." So, yeah, -1 point for comparing this to anything related to Phil Collins. Was hoping for some vocals. Alas, I never got them. Listed to other material from this album. Glad this song didn't have vocals.
Twosuitsluke: Coheed and Cambria - Welcome Home
8
Another apparent dtf.org darling I've never checked out. Good music, great lyrics (as I said before, lyrics don't usually catch me after the first couple listens.) Everything comes together in a nice package.
Elite: Jolly - Joy
7
Good modern rocker. Nothing flashy, just good solid rock. Initially thought the vocals would bring the song down, but they were quite good, fit the music well.
Stadler: Panic Channel - Loophole
7
Good song but didn’t' do anything to stand out among the better songs this round.
Tomislav95: Enchant - The Thirst
6
Reminded me of less-awesome early 80s Rush. Assume there is a heavy influence there. A little too proggy for my taste, but can see the appeal of these guys to the proggier among us.
Sacul: David Maxim Micic - Where is now?
5
Would have been a great instrumental. The vocals are all over the place and do a disservice to the music.
home: Sorority Noise - A Portrait Of
2
"I don't really have any musical talent, but I had a guitar and I'm pissed about something, so what the fuck." Middle section (approx 1:00-2:00) was rockin' pretty hard though.
-
Awesome! Theocracy is my favorite 2000's band. I was worried Laying The DFemon might be too heavy, but I struggled to find a song of theirs that is that strong. But they are awesome and have many great songs. Their last album, Ghost Ship, from last year is great.

Round 7 is a song from the 1980s. I didn't want too many open rounds, but also didn't want too many restrictive rounds. I thought this was a good compromise. I grew up in the 80s, but was young enough to have missed a lot of good music from those years.
To be more specific and hopefully helpful, if it was MTV a lot, I am probably familiar with it, but not automatically. I was born in 1976, so am more familiar with the latter part of the decade. I was mostly in to anything 'pop' or 'rock,' anything thrash was too heavy for me, anything rap was too crappy for me.
-
Two old bastards in the lead battling in an 80's round. Epic.
-
Theocracy is awesome, but I jus couldn't get into that song.
Triosphere is also awesome - and was an option I almost used.
King finally gets a respectable score. Deservedly so.
Echoes... you're not gonna find much - this is about it. https://www.therecordlabel.net/progressive-rock/echoes/
-
wait i could've sent fates warning all along for the 80's round? dang :lol
there's like, one of the literally two albums i actually own from the 80's gone
also yeah you def wouldn't like the rest of that venenum album. i love it but i'm weird
-
"I don't really have any musical talent, but I had a guitar and I'm pissed about something, so what the fuck."
Oh yeah you have to be completely talentless to write a riff like the one at about 0:40 and such an intense ending. :loser:
-
i don't know why chris hates you so much but he really hates you
-
Enchant too proggy? Ok :|
I think I have plenty of 80s music in my library, will dig through it when I'm home.

I mean yea, I like it a lot. They aren't a band I listen to a lot nowadays but they're still relevant. I just have so much music, post-80's, that I would send before this.
I honestly don't send any songs in roulettes that I don't love myself, it seems a cop out if I do that.
-
Growing up in the 80s I would love to hear certain albums that were recorded not in the 80s. One thing I can say is one of my favorite sounding albums from the 80s was Rush power windows it was a perfect blend of all instruments in a digital era that was brand new.
-
Dang! I have to resubmit as Chris knows the song and says he would give it a 10/10. Gutted
-
what was it?
-
It's a song by one of Sacul's fave bands that just managed to get released at the tail end of the 80's. Need any more clues?
-
Yes. The name of the band? 😂
-
i don't pay attention to what sacul is listening to these days
-
Yes. The name of the band? 😂
Spoilsport :P
I sent Head Like a Hole by Nine Inch Nails. Missed out on a 10/10 and now I've had to go and send a band whose vocals can split opinion....this will probably end badly.
-
Chris was going to give Head Like A Hole a 10?? No f'n way. I gave it a 6 and that was generous.
-
It's a cool tune Tim. I loved Trent Reznor's work with Bowie.
-
So it's me?? :lol OK. Wouldn't be the first time.
-
:lol
No comment.

In this case, no ... for once it's not you.

NIN generally sucks so i'm gonna say it's probably not you but i've never heard that one so i dunno
-
Yeah tried to send that one too some rounds ago :lol I kind of doubt Chris will enjoy more NIN but I could try in other rounds I guess.
-
My friend had whatever album Head Like A Hole was on, and I was borrowing it all the time just to listen to that one song. I can name only 2 other songs by NIN.

Anyone who submitted The Reflex would have been asked for an alternate, as that was probably one of my favorite songs from that time, as I didn't own the album, didn't know anyone who did, and only ever seemed to hear it at the local skating rink.

Anyone who submitted The Reflex would have been asked for an alternate, as that was probably one of my favorite songs from that time, as I didn't own the album, didn't know anyone who did, and only ever seemed to hear it at the local skating rink.
:tup
I posted about that song back in the 7 Songs for 7 Days thread
-
Duran Duran Arena was probably my most played cassette for a long period of time, and I hated how it didn't have The Reflex. It was also the first time I recall my mom taking any interest in what I was listening to and how it could affect my character. Maybe she thought I would start wearing eyeliner.
Need Home's song then I can post results.
Also, I had an idea for a bonus round that I thought was interesting, but I didn't know if everyone was losing steam on this roulette with one round to go. Thoughts?
-
Do it. Why not?
-
Ooh. A bonus round.
You mean home hasn't sent yet? WTF?
-
I'm game for more rounds.
-
i'm about out of music you wouldn't hate so bring it on
-
This round isn't related to music. *spoiler* I hesitate to go with it as I don't want to skew the end results, but it is a two-horse race at this point, so it might not matter.
-
You mean home hasn't sent yet? WTF?
It’s not like it really matters for his score anyway..
-
Hey you haven't lost untill it's over of something :P
Sorry man, it took me sometime to find a band I listen to with output in the 80's (besides acts you know like Queen, Pink Floyd etc) but I just realised there's this amazing psychedelic rock band who was active in this period. I'll send in a few minutes :hat
-
It took you six weeks to find a song from the 80s?
-
Nah I forgot about the theme until the round started and was away for most of the weekend
-
This round isn't related to music. *spoiler* I hesitate to go with it as I don't want to skew the end results, but it is a two-horse race at this point, so it might not matter.
Well, one horse and one ass. :neverusethis:

kingshmegland: Fates Warning - The Ghosts Of Home
This album took everyone by surprise with how good it is. Ghosts of Home has become a top 5 FW song at least, and the new album is top 3. Their Ray Alder era is a bit all over the place, but Theories of Flight is the best starting point. Parallels is their classic but is a bit more commercial but is one of my, and a lot of others fav albums of all time.
-
Wolfking knows what's up.

Perhaps, but it's not even the best song on the album. That's reserved for The Light and Shade of Things. Seeing that live is easily my best concert moment this year so far.
-
I actually prefer The Light And Shade Of Things too. Both great songs.
-
I'm up for another round...
-
kingshmegland: Stone Fury - Break Down The Wall
9
What I would expect from a quality 80s rocker. Great 80s high vocals, without being screechy. Awesome chorus.
Elite: Savatage - Gutter Ballet
9
I don't know how Savatage flew under my radar for so long. Cool 80s song without sounding too "80s." Cool soloing, guitar work sounded a little early Maiden to my ears. Nothing wrong there!
TAC: Tesla - Cumin' Atcha Live
8
Read that they would open their concerts with this. Pretty kick ass sounding way to start a show!
Shadow Ninja 2.0: The Moody Blues - The Voice
8
Note SN2.0's alternate pick was Tom Waits - Downtown Train. This was a great song. I was in to 70s Moody Blues, and had a greatest hits album that was mainly the 70s stuff but had a few later songs on it too. I liked those songs too, but not nearly as much as this one. Such a pleasant voice Justin Hayward has.
Stadler: The Outfield - Every Time You Cry
7
I am sure this chorus got the ladies waving the warms and the dudes waving their lighters at the arenas. The verses weren't very inspiring though, and bring this one down a little.
Twosuitsluke: King Diamond - Black Horsemen
7
My goodness did these vocals make my anus pucker! Great music without having memorable riffs. Tasty guitar solos. Not sure what to make of the vocals. They fit the song well, but I can't help hearing someone Dickinson doing the song more justice on the mic (but that could be said of most rock songs).
Sacul: Talk Talk - Life's What You Make it
5
Standard 80s fare, I could see this being in a good movie soundtrack more so than being a good standalone song. Lyrics were a bit of a drag considering the message they were going for.
Jingle.boy: Max Webster - Battle Scar
5
Jingle's first stumble! Is this crappy a Rush song? Why so repetitive?
Parama: Stevie Ray Vaughan - Lenny
4
I can't tell if I've heard one SRV, or two, or all of them, they all sorta sound the same. I'm not really a blues guy.
Tomislav95: The Cure - Push
4
This song seemed really short. I started it up, went through some filing, and it was over before I felt like got in to it. Why is the intro so damn long? I feel like I have heard better Cure songs. This one isn't a dud, but not very inspiring.
home: Gong - Flying Teapot
3
Never did any drugs, never got in to psychedelic music. Coincidence? Made me think of not as good Ummagumma at parts.
TAC: 61
jingle.boy: 58
Twosuitsluke: 50
Stadler: 49
Shadow Ninja 2.0: 46
Elite: 46
Kingshmegland: 46
Parama: 44

Sacul: 42

That Stone Fury song is awesome. I had that album back in the day. Sadly the album did not age well. But that song is still great.
-
BONUS ROUND
The world is such a miserable place. And while music can cheer us all up, nothing can brighten a day like a good laugh. And for this round, making me laugh is exactly what I want you to do!
The rules for this round:
• Send me a clip on Youtube – it must be available on youtube.
• It can be anything: A movie/TV scene, stand-up comedy bit, videos of people falling down, etc…
• Clips must be less than 3 minutes long. If you only want me to watch a segment of a clip, make note of the timestamp where you want me to start and stop viewing.
I will score each submission according to how much it makes me laugh. There is no blacklist. If it’s something I’ve seen a hundred times before, and it still makes me laugh, it will receive a high score.
-
Whoaaa I got a top score :D
-
Well, I scored higher than home :>
-
Chris, glad you liked the Tesla song. It does indeed rock. They were a great band. A 70's band trapped in an 80's band's body.
Actually the first track I brainstormed to send was Helix- Deep Cuts The Knife.
-
Actually the first track I brainstormed to send was Helix- Deep Cuts The Knife.
That's a killer tune.
-
Well, I scored higher than home :>
Donald Trump scored higher than Home. :)
-
Welp. :|
I barely scored higher than Home. Oh well. C'est la vie.
-
Savatage and King Diamond! :metal
King Diamond grows on you Chris. At first too I was like, 'what the fuck is this?' but now he's one of my favs of all time.
-
I sent Flying Teacup not Flying Teapot (they're different) but whatever.
Never did any drugs, never got in to psychedelic music. Coincidence?
You're missing out man
-
Sent my bonus round clip :lol
Hope you like, it tickles me every time!
-
I've never done drugs and I do enjoy me some psychedelic music tho :P
-
Some of you are sending in Round 8: Epics songs. Don't let the Bonus Round interfere with that. I don't have a strict definition for epic, so define epic however you wish. I won't dismiss anything on the basis of it not meeting a standard of being "epic."
-
Is there a length limit in the final round?
I have yet to send my funny video as well though.
-
No length limit. I will say that while some of my favorite songs are 20+ minutes (Echoes by Floyd, 2112, A Change of Seasons), I can't think of any songs longer than those (~23 min) that I have any affinity for.
-
Ok so I f'ed up everyone's comedy clips and lost track of who sent what. So..... just send me your Round 8 songs :)

A classic Rodney scene.

Forgot to send one, but I've always loved this short sketch by Kay & Peele, Weird Playlist (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMQ2qGmJOVM) and would have definitely sent it.

Chad, that's amazing. I sent Bill Burr on females.
Check out all 5 parts. #3 is my fave.
-
Never heard of Bill Burr. Thought that was the Smashing Pumpkins guy. The College Humor vids are usually great. Rodney is a Only-First-Name-Needed legend.
Good epics coming in. Need 3 more (Elite, I think you need to resubmit, check your PM).
-
Elite, I think you need to resubmit, check your PM).
I don't think I've submitted anything yet?

Bill Burr is one of the best comedians imo :tup
I sent one of my favorite scenes from Office https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vmb1tqYqyII

You also need to watch Bill Burr on heavy metal, and power ballads. Hilarious.
-
I've never seen a single Bill Burr clip.
-
I've never seen a single Bill Burr clip.
I just saw him live a month ago.
-
Elite, sorry I messed up my file of who sent what. I got everyone else figured out but was unsure of your status.
Waiting on you, Twosuitsluke, and Sacul.
Just realized I got two songs from the same album. No issue with me.
The first three minutes of Home's song is already his best submission.
-
Sent some 2005 epicness
Sorry for the delay, been a crazy day at work :yeahright
-
Still ahead of Sacul
-
Sent some 2005 epicness
Cassandra Gemini? I almost sent that.
-
i sent a 12 min epic from 2017 because i don't have a ton for chris anyways :corn
it's good though so it's okay
-
Sent some 2005 epicness
Cassandra Gemini? I almost sent that.
Nope :corn
It's not from a band you would call prog, at all, but this song has epic written all over it :hefdaddy
-
Hoping to get results posted tomorrow!
TAC has an 11 point lead over 3rd place. He is guaranteed at least a 2nd place finish. With a 3 point lead over Jingle, can he bring in Mariano Rivera to close it out? Will Jingle pass him on the home stretch?
-
J Boy will have to get a 13 to tie me cuz I sent a 10! ;D
-
Tim throwing the smacketh down!! :metal
-
i'm just hoping for a score above 5 for once :corn
-
I have nothing below a 6 this round so far, and yes, I have scored Home's song.
-

My song better not be it. >:(
-
Nah it's my song no worries
-
Round 8 results!
Sacul: Riverside - Hybrid Times
9
Is this rock? Is this metal? Is it prog-metal? Is it electronica? Is it from a Metroid game? No idea. But it is great!
Jingle.boy: Tangerine Circus - The Conspiracy
9
Great song, a mixed bag of what a prog-metal epic should include.
kingshmegland: The Network - No More Pain
8
Good epic prog rock song. Lots of layers, sections, diveristy, didn't feel as long as its 17+ minutes.
Stadler: Whitesnake - Forevermore
8
My knowledge of Whitesnake begins and ends with their Self-Titled album, thanks to MTV and the video with the chick dancing on the car. Wouldn’t have guessed this was the same band. Great song. Stadler's Wild Card was: The Grateful Dead - Terrapin Station
Parama: Tetrafusion - Perfect Silence
8
Beautiful intro. Had a Gabriel Knight vibe (if anyone gets that reference). Instrumental sections all over the place, mostly good though, strong vocals.
Shadow Ninja 2.0: Keldian - The Last Frontier
8
First submission was Highlander, after TAC sent it in. "A different type of epic" he says about the Last Frontier. Epics don't have to be long! Get in, kick ass, get out. Awesome.
home: Mastodon - The Czar
8
Home scores big in garbage time. Face-melting guitar, very doom-y, eerie feel to it.
TAC: Lost Horizon - Highlander
8
TAC brings in Mariano Rivery to close it out. Not a perfect 1-2-3 inning though, a little repetitive at times. Harmonies were majestic.
Elite: Headspace - Daddy Fucking Loves You
7
Awkwardest song title in my little roulette. Really liked the gear it kicked in to around 4:00. Took a wrong turn around 6:30, got back on track quickly, finished up strong. A bit of a mixed bag. Probably not something I will revisit, but a good listen.
Tomislav95: Mastodon - The Last Baron
6
Not too bad, but nothing too memorable. I liked the faster parts more than the slower parts, but do appreciate how balanced the song is for a 13 minuter.
Twosuitsluke: Avenged Sevenfold - Strength of the World
6
Didn't know anything about this band till Portnoy joined them after leaving DT. Some cool instrumentation here, didn't feel very "epic" though. Vocals didn't do anything for me.
-
FINAL STANDINGS

WRAP-UP
Thank you all for participating! I got exposed to lots of new bands, some I knew about but didn’t know any of their material, others I’d never heard of. Highlights are: Innerwish, Ghost, Lords of Black, Heavenly, Avantasia, Anathema, and Genesis*. Best song submission goes to “Square Hammer,” which I realized I liked more and more after I scored that round. If it is customary to give the winner a prize, I can throw something together for you TAC.
*Just kidding.
-
hybrid times is actually definitely the best song here, that album is one of the best prog metal albums of all time imo
-
Congrats Tim!! Great win!!
-
Indeed an excellent time was had. Great job keeping this thing moving Chris. Hope you enjoy all the new bands you're gonna have to make time for.
Congrats to Timmy as well. I'll get you my pretty.... and your little doggie too!
P.S. Glad you enjoyed The Conspiracy. Tangerine Circus is a band straight outta DTF ... Our very own hostage taker - DarkLord_Lalinc - is the keyboardist for the band. I'd been waiting for the right time to use them, and this was finally it. The album is fantastic if you happen to be able to give the whole thing a spin. The Dark Lord provides some of the vocals as well - I'm just not sure which tracks.

Yeah, he's active. And you only need to follow the post-your-pic thread (though, ironically... he hasn't posted there in a while). He was often posting pics that was always himself and at least 1 (usually more) hot chick(s). He earned the reputation of 'hostage taker'. Shit, he even took mrs.jingle hostage once - on ProgNation at Sea. Damn... that was almost 4 years ago!

Tim, what a fucking final submission, epic Lost Horizon song. Congrats.
-
Tim, what a fucking final submission, epic Lost Horizon song. Congrats.
When someone says epic, it's always the first song I think of. I haven't used it before because I just don't think it's for everyone. In the first round, Chris mentioned the "Hey"s in the Innerwish as being cheesey, but I was committed to Highlander. When I heard Chad's epic, I was worried. I thought Highlander might get the Battlescar treatment.
-
Finally you really like one of my entries :lol Like Parama said, fantastic record, check it out.
Thanks for hosting this :tup
-
My first passing grade in this entire roulette :lol
Thanks for hosting this!
-
I like The Czar more than The Last Baron as well so it's ok ;D
Thank you for running this roulette and I'm glad you liked some of my stuff, check out Ghost's Meliora :tup
-
Chris, here are a couple of other things I considered for this roulette.
For the Live Round, here is another track from UFO's Strangers IN The Night.
Love To Love
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M687f5m6QZw
For the 80's Round
Helix-Deep Cuts The Knife
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1BL4yx6chM
For the Epic Round
Theocracy-Mirror Of Souls
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6n1kMsLbc8
-
Oh, I would have sent Hybrid Times as well, since that song is absolutely fantastic, but I had already sent Riverside in a previous round.
Also the first time I see The Czar get a higher score than The Last Baron. The latter is the ultimate track on that record and one of Mastodon's finest as far as I'm concerned.
-

I didn't think they were cheesy, I did think they were the weakest part of the song, and a bit cliche and forced.
All the epic round songs were very good, and the separation between all of them was small. It was the one round where there was not a clear one or two songs that I thought stood above the rest. Nor were there any that were duds.
-
Thanks, Chris! Literally my highest finish ever, and first time not in the bottom three!! Yay!!
By the way, that Whitesnake song... his voice sounds so good, so warm in that song. The only time he sounded better (in my opinion) was on the Starkers in Tokyo acoustic record ("Don't Fade Away" is a must listen from that album).
