Who is your favorite singer, guitarist, bass player and drummer. And if its a close call, then feel free to add a runner up.
For me its:
Singer John arch of Fates warning (Very close runner up is bruce dickenson)
Guitarist Jim Matheos of Fates warning (runner up is petrucci)
Bass player Steve Harris of Iron maiden (runner up is geddy lee)
Drummer Neil Peart of rush
-
Freddie
Petrucci
Chris Squire
Peart
-
I'm a wannabe singer (always loved singing and I actually took lessons for some years), so I have a definite answer for the singer spot: Bruce Dickinson.
I'm not musically intelligent enough for the other instruments so I just happen to like musicians from bands I love... I'd say for the other spots:
Guitars: JP
Bass: Steve Harris
Drums: Mike Terrana just because his solos are so badass
-
Bruce, Petrucci, Geddy and Neil. If I were to choose a keyboard player as well, I'd go with Jordan.
-
Singer: Geoff Tate, as long as you can travel back in time to about 1993 and bump him off before he turns into a colossal turnip.
Guitarist: Marty Friedman on lead, James Hetfield playing rhythm.
Bass: Geddy Lee or Random Jon Poole (of various Ginger Wildheart projects. Also in the Cardiacs but mostly as a guitar player).
Drums: Neil Peart.
-
Michael Kiske
Michael Schenker and Gary Moore
Steve Harris
Mike Portnoy
-
Singer: (t) Steve Walsh and Freddie Mercury (Walsh in his prime is my favorite, but his prime was less than 10 years)
Guitarist: Alex Lifeson
Bassist: (t) Geddy Lee and Chris Squire
Drummer: Neil Peart
-
Singer - Freddie or Dio, depending on mood
Guitar - Brian May, JP, or Vinnie Moore
Bass - Billy Sheehan or Geddy Lee
Drums - Peart or MM
Keys - Jordan - no competition for that one!

Drummer: Mike Portnoy
Keyboard: Jordan Rudess
-

Guitar: Petrucci
Bass: Geddy

This is actually kind of easy. The only one that is even a debate is bass.
Singer: Freddie Mercury
Guitar: Ritchie Blackmore
Bass: Chris Squire
Drums: Neal Peart
-
Singer: Daniel Gildenlow/Anneke Van Giersbergen
Guitarist: John Petrucci
Bassist: Dave La Rue
Drummer: This is too hard, but I'll just say prime Portnoy, but the list is long.

I agree, picking a drummer is hard. I pick Peart because I see him as the Jack Nicklaus of drums, changed everything. Portnoy would be Tiger Woods, started fast and faded. But sometimes Gavin does things that make me use a lot of profanity because I can hardly stand how good it is.
-
Freddie Mercury
Brian May with Steve Vai very close runner up
John Myung
Mike Mangini
-

Other than the "faded", that's kind of me. Give the nod to the guy that came first.
-
I'm not so much thinking of this as my "favourite" in each category (although they're all "one of..."), but it's more a case of who would it be cool to see together as a supergroup. Fantasy band draft time!
Vocals: David Longdon
Guitar: Bryan Josh
Bass: Dave Meros
Drums: Nick Mason
(Keyboards, because all the good bands have them: Andy Tillison)
-
My only undisputed choice at any instrument would be Michael Schenker on guitar. Rock/Metal guitar would never exist in its current form without his influence on practically everyone in the genre'.
On vocals it would probably be mid 90's-onward Ray Alder. Of course, I have a huge place in my heart for the big 3 (Dickinson, Dio and Halford). Geoff Tate from '83 to '93 also ranks very highly for me.
Bass is a tough one. If John Myung had a more prominent sound/presence in DT I would probably choose him. Steve Harris could be an easy choice. Joey Vera is amazing in everything that I've ever heard him do.
Drums would probably be MP. GH with Porcupine Tree is amazing.
-
Vocals: Tommy Karevik. Runner up Ross Jennings. LaBrie in his prime is pretty solid too
Guitar: Petrucci. Runner up Guthrie Govan
Bass: Myung
Drums: Portnoy. Runner up Mangini
-
Singer: Freddie, or Peter Gabriel (yup, seriously)
Guitarist: JP
Bass: Pat Badger
Drummer: Gavin Harrison
-
Singer: Neal Morse Runner Up: Russell Allen
Guitarist: JP
Bass: Dave Meros Runner Up: Randy George
Drummer: Portnoy Runner Up: Blake Richardson
-
Right, keyboards: this is the hardest of all, but by a nose (over Richard Christopher Wakeman) would be Tony Banks.
-
Singer - Phil Anselmo: Racist stage antics aside, in his prime, his screams were pure power and his cleans were beautiful.
Guitarist - John Petrucci: The perfect blend of melodic and technical. Everything that a lead guitarist should strive to be.
Bassist - Cliff Burton: This one is more personal with me being a bassist myself, and Cliff is the biggest reason why I started playing the instrument. In a genre that usually puts the bass in the background, Cliff made his playing stand out, adding fills and flair to his basslines and taking solos. I know it doesn't get much love on these forums, but the first time I heard (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth was a revelation. It showed me that in metal, a bass could be used for more than doubling the rhythm guitar and could have it's own identity. Cliff Burton helped shape who I am as a bassist and as a musician today.
Drummer - Mike Portnoy: Nobody makes their hi-hats sing like Portnoy. I could listen to his isolated drum parts and still enjoy them as if they were a full song.
Bonus musician!!!
Keyboard - Jordan Rudess: He's not called the Wizard for nothing. His technique is unmatched, his compositional and orchestration skills are amazing, and his mind for technology is revolutionizing music applications.
-
Singer would be tough. Joe Lynn Turner comes to mind as a very top contender.
Guitar = Paul Gilbert
Bass = Billy Sheehan
Drums = Mike Portnoy
-
Singer was really hard for me. Bruce, Dio, Russell, Haggar. Landed with Neal just beacuse he's been my favorite artist for the last year or so.
-
WOW! A Joe Lynn Turner sighting! Nice! I love his voice.
Kaos, do you mean "Russell" as in Russell Allen (no bueno) or Jack Russell (voice like velvet)?
-
WOW! A Joe Lynn Turner sighting! Nice! I love his voice.
JLT has always been one of my favorites. I found the list of others I'd compiled:
Steve Perry
Ian Gillan
Sammy Hagar
Paul Rodgers
Joe Lynn Turner
Paul Stanley
Robin Zander
Don Dokken
Jeff Scott Soto
Prince
Roy Orbison
Pat Dinizio
Tommy Shaw
Michael Sweet
David Coverdale
-
These "choose one artist" threads are very hard, i could list a lot of people in each category. I'm not going to think about this too hard...
Singer: Freddie Mercury, Mike Patton
Guitarist: Steve Lukather, Alex Lifeson
Bass: Geddy Lee, Les Claypool, Billy Sheehan
Drums: Neil Peart.
-
WOW! A Joe Lynn Turner sighting! Nice! I love his voice.
Kaos, do you mean "Russell" as in Russell Allen (no bueno) or Jack Russell (voice like velvet)?
Russell Allen. I know you're not a big fan Stads and the best Russell is not the aggressive Russell (AMOB). Listen to V (album) or the Odyssey (song) and his voice is amazing. Also, the guy is beast live.

I saw him with AMOB and with TSO for the Christmas show. MUCH better with TSO even though he only sang a few songs.
-
Vocals: Ian Kenny (Karnivool)
Guitars: Alex Lifeson, Chris DeGarmo
Bass: Jon Stockman (Karnivool)
Drums: Tomas Haake (Meshuggah)
Keys: Diego Tejeida (Haken)
I think DeGarmo and Lifeson would be an interesting duo. Stockman drives a lot of the riffing in Karnivool, so I would be interested to hear what sort of textures the Lifeson and DeGarmo duo would create on top of that.
-
Impossible to narrow it down to one or two but here's my try
Vocals: Bruce Dickinson
Guitar: Steve Lukather or Eddie Van Halen
Bass: Mark King
Drums: Jeff Porcaro
And ask me tomorrow and I will create a different list.
-
Totally impossible to narrow the singers down to one - even 3 is hard, anyway,
Singers (in order of discovering them): Dio, Marco Hietala, James LaBrie
Guitar: Ritchie Blackmore
Bass: John Myung
Drums: Mike Mangini, Ed Warby
I just have to add
Keys: Jordan Rudess
Composers in rock/metal/prog: John Petrucci and Arjen Lucassen
-

I love your rhythm section and Luke kills on guitar.
-
Singer: James LaBrie, Lee Douglas, Sharon Del Adel, Michael Kiske
Guitarist: Eddie Van Halen, John Petrucci
Basist: Jonas Reingold
Drummer: Mike Mangini, Gavin Harrison, Neil Peart
Keys: Kevin Moore (I'm serious)
-
Right, keyboards: this is the hardest of all, but by a nose (over Richard Christopher Wakeman) would be Tony Banks.
He would be my pick, too (by a hair over Kevin Moore).
Singer: Freddie, or Peter Gabriel (yup, seriously)
Peter Gabriel would be near the top of my list for favorite singers. Just an awesomely unique voice. :tup :tup
Keyboard - Jordan Rudess: He's not called the Wizard for nothing. His technique is unmatched, his compositional and orchestration skills are amazing, and his mind for technology is revolutionizing music applications.
There is no doubting Rudess' talent and innovation, and he would be one of my favorite keyboard players (top 5 maybe), but he is similar to Mangini in that he is such a technical wizard with his instrument that he sometimes loses his way and focuses too much on technique, and often at the expense of melody and feel.
-
Singer: Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz) Not saying he's the best, but his voice just clicks with me.
Guit: JP
Bass: Les freakin Claypool! Only one mention? Come on y'all!
Drums: MP
Keys: JR
-
Singer is the hardest one for me - overall front man is David Lee Roth but if I think about the singers that I have become obsessed with (tracking down all their stuff) at some time and who are versatile enough to sing across my main genres of interest (AOR,hard rock, metal) then two names come to mind. Jeff Scott Soto and Mark Free.
Guitar: EVH
Bass: Marcel JAcob (RIP)
Drums: Alex Van Halen/ Mike Portnoy
Keys: Kevin Moore
-
Singer: Simone Simons, Bobby Darin, Sarah Brightman
Guitarist: John Petrucci & Steve Rothery (most underrated guitarist I've ever heard)
Keys: Jordan Rudess - no contest, even before he was in DT
Bass: TBA
Drums: Neil Peart
-
Singer: Ann Wilson r/u: Jon Anderson, Steve Perry
Guitar: Eric Johnson (some of his solos move me like no other music can) r/u: Alex Lifeson (Caress of Steel through Permanent Waves), Petrucci
Bass: Chris Squire (RIP-if I could play any instrument like any one person, it would be bass like Squire) r/u: Geddy Lee
Drums: Barriemore Barlow r/u: Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, Carl Palmer (if you've seen him live-OMG!), Phil Collins (before he turned into a pu**y)
Keys: Tony Banks r/u: Rick Wakeman, Jordan Rudess
-
Singer: Daniel Gildenlow
Guitar: Mark Knopfler
Bass: Geddy Lee
Drums: Brann Dailor
-
Singer: Daniel Gildenlow
Guitar: Mark Knopfler
Bass: Geddy Lee
Drums: Brann Dailor
Brann Dailor is not quite at the Neil Peart level, but he is close! Most talented drummer of any working band today!

This is SO not meant to piss on your choices - their YOUR choices! - but I have to say... I don't get Jeff Scott Soto. He strikes me as a sort of minor league version of Joe Lynn Turner, who (despite being a GREAT singer) is a sort of second tier guy himself. What am I missing?
Also, props to the Les Claypool mention, and the numerous Ann Wilson mentions. She's EASILY my favorite female vocalist, and probably in my top five if I expanded my list.
-
Russell Allen or Amanda Somerville
Jon Schaffer
Greg K.
Mike Portnoy

I dig the hell out of Jeff Scott Soto. Don't forget, he was the voice for Malmsteen before JLT was. My favorite JSS offering:

Jeff Scott Soto's performance on Marching Out is a TAC Top 5 Vocal.
-
Bruce Dickinson
Glen Tipton
Adrian Smith
Yngwie Malmsteen
Steve Harris
Blake Richardson
I put 3 guitarists because I could.
-
Singer : Bono. Billie Joe. Noel Gallagher, james Dean Bradfield
Guitar : The Edge, Mark Knopfler, Billie Joe ( for rhythm chops ) James Dean Bradfield, Petrucci
Bass : Claypool, Mike Dirnt, Myung
Drums : Gavin Harrison.
-
Blake Richardson
Who is this?
-
Blake Richardson
Who is this?
He's from Between the Buried and Me, probably not your thing Tim. I'm not really into the drummer side of thing compared to guitar and vox, and while I thought Portnoy would probably be the option for me, this guy I think is amazing as I'm really into BTBAM at the moment. Not sure how he's rated amongst drummers but I think he's great. Just thought I'd throw his name out there.
-
Cool. Yes, I've sampled them.

And that's as far as it went haha?
Probably wouldn't be my fav of all time, but right now, yeah.

WHO'S IN?!?!
ICED DANISH has a nice ring to it.
-
This difficult as a lot of my favourite muscians like Steven Wilson, Casey Crescenzo, Syd Barrett aren't necessarily at the top-game of their instruments but rather are amazing composers.
Singer: Darroh Sudderth, Ian Kenny
Guitarist: John Petrucci, David Gilmour
Bass player: Jon Stockman
Drummer: Marco Minneman, Mike Portnoy, Brann Dailor
-
But I thought I was gonna drum......

you can drum in my Metalcore band called " we're over dream theater "
-
Keyboard - Jordan Rudess: He's not called the Wizard for nothing. His technique is unmatched, his compositional and orchestration skills are amazing, and his mind for technology is revolutionizing music applications.
Whenever I see stuff like this, I wonder whether you've ever heard stuff by Rick Wakeman.
----
Vocals: I'm inclined to go with Daniel Gildenlöw here. James LaBrie '92-'95 is a good second spot.
Guitars: So many guys to choose from... Gotta go with Guthrie Govan. He's the best out there today. John Petrucci takes the second place - the guitar playing I've drawn most influences from myself. David Gilmour would be a fine candidate as well.
Bass Guitar: Jaco Pastorius, I guess, though I must admit that I don't really care for bassists most of the time (sorry)
Drums: Mike Portnoy (runners up would be Tomas Haake, Marco Minneman and Gavin Harrison)
Bonus Keyboards: Rick Wakeman
-
Only living people...
Brent Smith - vocals
John Petrucci - guitar
Pete Trewavas - bass
Neil Peart - Drums

Drummer: Jon Bolton, local to Seattle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fj1FsDI8SDc)
-
Vocals: Zaher Zorgati (male) & Nana Hedin (female)
Guitar: Probably Steve Lukather. I'm not that into individual guitarists.
Bass: Nate Phillips & Louis Johnson
Drums: Dennis Chambers/Mike Portnoy/Steve Gadd. So many great ones to choose from.
-

Ox,
The Professor.
None of them are the best at what they do, but they all make me smile when they do their thing. Richard Wright would be my no-brainer keyboard choice. Others that always put a smile on my face are Halford, Glenn Hughes, and Gavin Harrison.
-
Singer: Ray Alder
Guitarist: Alex Lifeson
Bassist: Chris Squire
Drums: Brann Dailor
Keyboards: Kevin Moore
-
Singer: I don't know, honestly. Probably either Simone Simmons (Epica) or Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering) as my favorite female vocalist, and either Thom Yorke (Radiohead) or Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie) as my favorite male vocalist.
Guitarist: John Petrucci (Dream Theater)
Bassist: Geddy Lee (Rush)
Drummer: Neil Peart (Rush)
