Yup, we should do a meet up as well before hand.

I snagged one of those VIP balcony tickets too.  It's not often those go on sale to the general public and for only 10 bucks more.

OMG thanks for letting me know gotta buy my tickets now. I made a promise not to go back to Irving plaza regardless of who played, because of some stuff that happened a few years back with foo fighters...but I think this is worth it. Going for sure

I passed on the VIP cause I had no idea what it was. I guess I'm just a regular guy that night.

:lol the VIP is nice because you just have an option to go onto the balcony for a better view, could also chill in the pit.  I've honestly never got a balcony ticket at Irving or other similar venues so when I saw the option for not a bad price I snagged it up.

Knocking around catching this, but it'll be 800 miles South of me rather than 880nm NE. The choice between cheaply doing this very well or expensively doing it like a bum is really no question at all.

Honestly, this is the best place for this thread. This is a show for Dream Theater fans, and the purpose of putting this thread here is so any fans attending can plan a meetup.

I don't interpret "Once in a lifetime" as one gig. I think its once in a lifetime in the sense that after he does, how ever many shows he does, you won't get another chance to see it.
Like if you missed The Astonishing you won't ever have a chance to see it live in its entirety.
So I'm fine with the once in a lifetime tag.

Also, not many are fortunate enough to be able to do the cruise so that was a unique gig that's different from a real venue.

What is the laughing for?

You guys seem to be taking the "Once in a lifetime" as literally a once only performance. It simply means its a once in a lifetime chance to see these shows. It won't be repeated after the dates are played.

Definitely. I don't really have an issue with him using that tagline, just a little amusing for someone who has the good fortune to catch two of these performances.

Oh, your roll call was for the New York date, and I'm not going to be there, but at a different time. The Barcelona one is a festival I'm attending (Be Prog! My Friend) and the Tilburg gig I'm going to with my mother, because she wanted to go and because it's close to home.

Not laughing for any specific reason, a pretty weird smiley choice I guess :P

Even if Mike was still in DT and this was a DT show, I'd probably still give it a miss but certainly not interested in seeing this with a covers band.  12 Steps is not really my favourite DT material, they're not bad songs on their own and would like to see Glass Prison again some day but no desire to see them all in one show.  Also just seen DT do ACOS so not really into seeing this band cover it.  I thought Mike may be planning to do that song and am guessing that's why all discussion of DT is now banned on his forum as they stole his thunder a little.  Main draw was 12 steps of course but ACOS would still have been much more of a selling point if the real DT weren't out playing the song themselves.

I wish Mike all the best with the shows of course as we would likely not have had DT without him but am glad Dream Theater never did this show and probably never will.

I'm not trying to call you out specifically, Peter, but referring to this as a "cover band," IMO, is dismissive and misses the point that one of the guys who wrote this material has assembled a band he feels is more than capable of executing the material live in a way he feels it should be executed.  This isn't at all comparable to a situation where you just have a bunch of random guys who have no connection whatsoever to the original music throwing it into a set just because they like it.

I don't know, I think cover band may be the closest label to it though being that it is not DT.  However, having the writer of the music performing it does make cover band sound a bit off, but not sure what other way to describe it.  I mean, calling them Haken may be more closely to being correct.  I just don't see it as technically wrong (cover band that is).
Title: Re: The Shattered Fortress Roll Call!

But why do we even need to label it to begin with?  It's just a side project Mike put together to celebrate this particular music.  In fact, if we're going to put a label on it, why not just call it what it is--a side project?

Well its the internet so of course it's going to get labelled as something although I do agree, it doesn't need to be labelled, but that also doesn't mean it won't get labelled and I personally still feel like cover band most closely resembles what they are.  Are they a side project?  I guess that label works too.

Eh, if someone wants to call it a cover band, that's fine with me. I mean, it's more facetiously than anything. But in reality it's MP and 4 other dudes, none of whom I've ever heard of, playing DT tunes.

Haken is his band and they are AWESOME! Check them out, you'll dig them.
Eric Gillette is also in the lineup, and he is the red hot guitarist from The Neal Morse band, and he is an amazing vocalist

As far as labeling this show as anything, I couldn't care less. Its a rock and roll show with musicians I love playing music I love. Calling it whatever is inconsequential to me.

You are correct, people will put a label on it. I'm just saying I simply see it as a Mike Portnoy show with kick ass special guests. I think this show is going to be a blast and a diversion from work and stress, so I'll just label it as a great night out in the big city to decompress.

Also, I know this isn't a case for everyone, but it is a one time experience so just got to soak that in.  I've only seen MP once since the split (with Winery Dogs) so it'll be kind of nice to see him doing DT again, hopefully he is having a blast doing so.  Plus the rest of the band are fantastic musicians as stated.

Not trying to be dismissive but it is a band playing another band's songs so not sure how you can call this anything but a covers band.  OK it has one former member of that band (the drummer, not the singer or even one of the soloists) who was the mastermind of the songs lyrically but he has put together a band to do cover versions of the songs live.  Transatlantic and LTE were side projects playing original material, this is not that.  If this turned into a real side project playing new material then I would be very interested to hear what they came up with as they are talented guys.

I'm sure Mike would like to see this as something like Roger Waters going out playing Pink Floyd stuff with a new band or even Mark Knopfler playing Dire Straits stuff but Mike was not Roger Waters or Mark Knopfler in Dream Theater.  He was more than "just" the drummer clearly but he was not the voice of the DT nor did he write the huge majority of the songs on his own.

Again, I have no problem with him doing it and hope the shows go well as these songs mean a lot to him and I'm sure to some others who've been through similar experiences with drug and alcohol abuse.  It's just not something I'd want to see live, even if it was the real band playing the songs, and it makes it easier to say no when it is not DT themselves.

I kind of simultaneously get it and agree with him while also agreeing with you.  At its core, yeah, it's a DT song, and it's something they've played a bunch, and it's a fan favorite.  It makes sense for them to play it, and there's no reason why they shouldn't.  But I think that where Mike is coming from is that it is a very personal song for him as well, and it just doesn't feel right for them to be playing it without him.  I get that.  I don't agree that they shouldn't play it, but I get it.  And that said, I get that he also feels it would be odd for both bands to be playing it at the same time, but I disagree with his decision to pull it from his set for that reason.  If he wants to play it, he should play it.  But on the other hand, there is plenty of material to choose from, and an epic that long after the 12SS would be exhausting.

I'm with you. I guess the comment just caused me to pause because I figured MP would have come to terms with this sort of thing years ago. The band is going to play songs he wrote lyrics to, even songs with lyrics he considers very personal. That's part of the repercussions of his actions. I mean, when he left all this stuff got sorted out, so I'd get it if Mike just left like last year and this was the band's first major tour since his departure and they chose to play ACOS. But it's been, what almost 7 years since he left?

I'm totally with you that he shouldn't not play it because they are. If he wants to play it, go for it.

That was a very balanced comment from MP. Of course, he should play whatever he wants to play, but I get him not wanting to end his shows the same way DT currently does.
Title: Re: The Shattered Fortress Roll Call!
Post by: Peter Mc on June 07, 2017, 07:17:02 AM
This was the discussion that made Mike shut down any DT related thread on his forum and ban any new threads being set up.  I thought at the time it was because he was pissed that DT would do this when he was probably intending to play it on his tour.

My own feeling is this it totally makes sense and is apt for DT to play ACOS on this tour more than any other.  I also get why Mike may not want them to play this song without him but, if that's the case, he should have negotiated this in his exit agreement as Tate did with Mindcrime. Otherwise he cannot expect DT to ignore what most fans consider to be their greatest ever song for the rest of their career.

I don't think it would be right for DT to play Best Of Times without Mike and I don't think they will as those lyrics are very personal to Mike's relationship with his father and it was written for him and played to him before he died.  ACOS is far more universal though, about life and death in general, so much so that I never realised that it was about the death of Mike's mother until years later when I read it somewhere.

Don't get me wrong, I would love Mike to be up there with DT playing ACOS himself and there was a tinge of sadness when I saw it on the tour but it was still awesome to see it again after all these years.

I'm curious to know what that means. For certain, it wouldn't be like he'd put together a band just to play only DT material. But, does that also mean that none of his bands/projects will never ever again include a DT song in their set (like what was done on the first tours for both Flying Colors and Transatlantic)? If this new band with Derek is prog-metal, I can't imagine them not at least including a bit of ACoS and/or something from FII in the setlist of the first tour to help fill it out.

Not buying it.  This is actually a smart move on his part.  He knows that anything remotely interesting and/or controversial he says spreads like wildfire through the 'net, so now the buzz will be "Come see MP play DT songs for the last time!"  Which could potentially boost ticket sales a bit.  A very calculated, shrewd move.

If this new band with Derek is prog-metal, I can't imagine them not at least including a bit of ACoS and/or something from FII in the setlist of the first tour to help fill it out.
Exactly. Neither can I.

Maybe. Not sure that's it though. He just seems like a guy that "thinks out loud".

I was assuming he meant this was the last time he would put together a group to specifically play DT material. I also assumed that he would still be willing to cover a DT song here or there with the other projects you mentioned.

All just my assumptions though.

This was exactly my experience.  I just thought it was a beautifully written song about experiencing loss but had no idea it was specifically about his mother until I read about it.

I get how he may feel about it but if it is such an emotional song, why did DT play the Simpsons theme and the baseball game "Charge!" melody during the SFAM tour.  I mean, I can't listen to that version because it seems so cheap in an otherwise deeply moving song.

TBOT is much different lyrically though.  It is very blunt with very specific memories and recollections.  That would be pretty awkward for DT to do and for that reason I doubt they'll ever do it.  Instrumentally though or as an excerpt here or there if they ever do a medley is totally kosher as far as I'm concerned.

Anyone attending tonight's show? I'm excited as hell and I would like to get the setlist and pic from the merchandising.

The setlist is here: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/mike-portnoys-shattered-fortress/2017/koko-london-england-53e4cbed.html. I am excited to see the show next week in Holland, but given MP's normal creativity and making sure people hear new things, I would have expected a more varied setlist. Except for Home the SFAM + Awake stuff is exactly what DT played on their 2014 tour. Oh well, I am sure it will be agreat show anyway.

Set list is decent even allowing for the fact that I personally wouldn't be that desperate to see the 12 Step Suite.  For those who do like that stuff that's a good set.  Reactions on twitter seem really positive (although I'm only seeing MP's retweets so they would be!) no reason to think this isn't reflective though.  Glad the show went well and people are enjoying it.  According to setlist site, there are 3 guitar players, if that's right that's awesome that they need 3 players to replace JP, he really must be a beast!

It was an excellent show. Seven musicians, Eric Gillette took most of the lead guitar and could (in my opinion) have carried it on his own - he is quite superb, and sings well too. The keyboard player was excellent. The vocalist was excellent too, could easily front DT.....

As this was the first night, there's no guarantee Mike won't shake the set up a bit?

I would say it's a slight possibility, but given that all the rest of the musicians needed to learn these songs, it may be asking much to ask them to learn even more songs.  So my guess is no rotation.

Also, tickets are still available for NYC, if you are on the fence about going, check out some videos maybe you'll change your mind.

Ive seen a ton of people say this and it would be funny if it was actually true. Eric plays all the solos and plays them flawlessly. MP has commented on this, he wanted to use the full Haken band and Eric and he said Eric could more than handle this himself but he thought it would be cool to have rhythms for solos that JP recorded in the studio and be able to do them live.

Bumping this thread since the show is approaching us.

Was wondering if anyone is interesting in doing a meet up before the show being that it's a Sunday so no work to come from making it much easier to grab some drinks/food before hand

Should be in for a meetup beforehand. Nick will be napping on my couch in the morning after flying back in from Chicago, not sure what our plans are beyond that.

How long have these shows been, anyway?
Doors open at 7, and I assume MP doesn't take the stage until 8pm.

I'll likely be taking NJ Transit in, so I'm trying to see if I can realistically make the 11:15pm back to Jersey. If not, I guess it's gotta be the 12:15am  ;D

If doors are at seven, that would mean MFP takes the state at 8, and his old man at 9.

Yea, the headliner won't go on at 8.  I believe Next to None are the openers so they'll likely go on 7:30 or 8 with MP going on at 9.  That's my best guess.  You might still be able to catch the NJ transit train at 11:15 if you are OK missing some of the end and catch a cab to Penn Station.

I booked a hotel room so I don't need to worry about catching that long ass 75 minute NJ transit train and it's much closer to work on Monday to just stay there (plus I can hang out around the venue after).

Should be in for a meetup beforehand. Nick will be napping on my couch in the morning after flying back in from Chicago, not sure what our plans are beyond that.

TSF songs were never really my favorite tracks by DT (besides TGP  :metal) so I wasn't always so excitied to see the songs, but more so for the experience.  But been listening to TSF tracks today and I am getting pretty pumped for this.  Especially for MP's home town crowd, I expect a really fun show.

I'm in the same boat regarding 12S, but TGP alone would be worth the price of admission. And it's a good setlist. It'll be a great show.

Yeah, for me the TGP is easily the best of the 12SS songs, though I do like the other songs to varying degrees. TDS is probably my least favorite of them but I'm still looking forward to watching the guys tackle that ending unison. SETLIST SPOILERS***Seeing as Scenes from a Memory is my all time favorite album from any band, I'm quite happy with the rest of the setlist :lol***

Yea, a great selection of the non 12SS songs and I feel the same, TGP is the my favorite and TDS is my least, but those are also the only two songs of the setlist I haven't seen DT play.

Yea, not sure where, but definitely going to be in the city before the show for a meet up.  Maybe a bar that'll have the 4pm NFL games on.  I'll probably start heading into the city once the Giants are getting beat by the Eagles.

I would say take a shot every time Eli gets sacked, but you'd be drunk before you even get to the pre-show meet-up. :lol

I'm coming into Grand Central now, but I'm not allowed in bars.

Meeting up at a bar for this event seems kind of ironic when you think about it.

Anyway if any of you see a teenager in a Whalers hat, feel free to say hi!
