Title: Anyone treat their yard for ticks?
Post by: Sir GuitarCozmo on March 29, 2017, 09:51:30 AM
So Saturday, it was a fairly nice day for March.  We were all out in the backyard with the dog, doing some yard work and such.  We'd recently gotten him a Seresto collar, which has very handily kept fleas and tick at bay for two years of using them.  Mrs. C. picked two deer ticks off him.  They likely would have fallen off or died, due to the Seresto collar, but now I'm half afraid to even go out to the back yard to work on shit.  Is there any sort of yard treatment we can put down to help fight them off?  Take into consideration the fact that our back yard is about a quarter of an acre of open yard area, so it's a pretty decent amount of space that needs treated, with a wooded area on one side.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I do. In the Spring and Mid-Summer I use the granules and spread them in my yard. I think it's usually the 'Bayer' brand. It works pretty well for all the little insects. Additionally, I have set up a really nice bird feeding 'station' so to speak at the back of my property (about 20 yds from my house) that attracts a large variety of birds. Along with the free food I give them they help out a lot with the mosquitos and bugs also.

Hmph.  I get eaten alive by mosquitos in the summer when we're out tending the garden, so maybe setting up a feeder or two back there would help with that.

Yep. That's the exact product I use. And having a feeder certainly helps as those birds will eat a ton of the insects as well. I love our feeders

Love it Gregg!  :lol

Okay, cool, I'll check it out.  I'll have to look into advisories for animals coming into contact with it.  The dog goes out there to run and likes to roll around on the ground, so that may present issues.

That is an issue. It needs a day or two to settle in. We have to do quick in and outs with our dog when I apply it.

I didn't want to spend time or money on it at first, but my roommate gave me an ultimatum around Halloween: it ultimately came down to 'tick or treat.'

Well, true, but that doesn't mean I want him creeping about my yard uninvited.

It's really tough to treat your yard for ticks. You can try something called Sevin dust, but any of those things will also take out beneficial insect like bees, ladybugs, etc. Some things you can do are to keep up all your leaf litter, get rid of weeds in your yard, keep your grass mowed short, keep bushes trimmed back. But also keep in mind you've probably got a bunch of warm blooded critters hanging out or traipsing through. You can try to restrict their access.
