Polls & Survivors Tracker Thread
This thread is meant to replace the “Ongoing and Upcoming Survivors Thread” (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=12336.0) which has a first post that hasn’t been updated in over 9 years.
I will attempt to archive all old Polls, Survivors, Leagues, Heal or Hurt, Power, or any other games played. I will also organize them by band/artist/topic for easy access.
If you are planning on hosting something, please comment below, and it will be added.
I will work on an archive. You can save time by commenting with a link to old games you’ve hosted if you have them.
Any questions comments or concerns, feel free!
Remember, this forum is solely to have fun and entertain ourselves with the music (and other stuff) that we love. Have fun with it, but don’t spoil fun for others by trolling results.

Some adjustments / suggestions about Ayreon/Arjen Lucassen Survivor which you're free to ignore or add to the thread:
The link you provided in the OP for Ayreon/Arjen Lucassen Survivor leads to the Prediction Contest thread. While this is fine, the actual Results and Discussion thread can be found at this link: https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=49314.0
But, while I'm at it, if that's not too much to ask, I'd like both the Results and Discussion thread and Prediction Contest thread to be featured in the OP, as this is something I've never saw done at DTF before, and as I consider both of the threads as an integral part of the experience. Should you think this is unfeasible, I ask to simply adjust the link so it would direct folks to the actual Results and Discussion thread. :tup

Fwiw, I'm waiting for the Marillion survivor. Six years since the last one, and the band have released two albums since then. And I've bought all their albums except This Strange Engine, Somewhere Else and Happiness is the Road.
EDIT: I say that, looking at the participant figures in the 2011 Survivor, it might not be worth it. Once again proof that if it's not metal, it gets no love round here...

We had Avantasia survivor ran by Chad (jingle.boy) I think in 2014. I might do it again for 2018, not sure though.
I'd love to do a Blind Guardian one, but yeah, I think you're right, it won't get enough voters.

Yeah, I've thought about running another one since then, but the numbers were so much lower than any of my other survivors that I just didn't think there'd be enough interest in doing another one. I'm planning on doing Genesis next after DT, but if there's enough built-up interest where I can get, say, at least 9 or 10 voters actively participating, then I'd be down for it, but I know there are a lot of Marillion fans who are divided by their works, being fans of either their earlier material or their later material, and fewer who like both, so I'm not sure how many Marillion fans here would actually participate the whole way through.

It's been five years and nearly two months since I last did the Genesis Survivor, so I think it's time to bring it back. I shall plan to begin it in the coming weeks, so I'll have the main discussion thread set up in the next week or so, and then by the end of May, I'll get things rolling! I want to try and get more participation in it this go around, at least 12-15 if possible, though I know a lot of Genesis fans really enjoy both major eras of the band (usually one or the other), but I hope that, in the time since I last did it, there are plenty of new Genesis fans on DTF!

Sorry for double posting but I wanted this post to be well visible for interested ones ;) While TheCountOfNYC has been found and answered about Metallica Survivor, I just want to let You Guys know that I have been preparing HELLOWEEN SURVIVOR 2017 :metal We will go through all Helloween studio albums including 5 track EP from 1985. But that's not the end. I also have prepared 42 non-albums and b-sides tracks for this survivor and the album tournament :metal So we can easily speak that we have in front of us Mega Helloween Survivor 2017 ;D First we will start with casual type of survivor - album by album and voting out the least favourite songs. Next, somewhere in the middle of Helloween's discography, I will launch Helloween non-albums and b-sides song survivor, and after we deal with all the albums, album tournament will start. Hope I will find some participants in here, I ran once Helloween Survivor here long ago and it was fun :) It will start between nearest Monday and Wednesday :) :metal Be prepared :)

I've recently been thinking of starting a Symphony X survivor once I'm finished listening through their discography (currently up to The Odyssey). Would anyone be interested? I know the last one wasn't held that long ago, but seeing as that one was never finished (& may or may not have been run by a robot :lol) I was thinking I could start it up again? Thoughts?

So, it's been a few months since I last stepped foot into the Polls/Survivors subforum, but I think I have an idea of what I want to do next, and it's kind of a doozy...
The Neal Morse Mega-Survivor, including sub-survivors for:
Neal Morse Solo/Neal Morse Band (prog solo albums only, no Songs From November or worship albums)
Spock's Beard (the first six albums, then the rest because, why not?)
Flying Colors (the two that are out, three if it comes out by the time we get to it)
Transatlantic (the four that are out, five if it ever happens)
Misc. Songs Neal has Played and/or Sung on (subject to change, perhaps upon suggestions)
Each survivor would run as its own, but then I would take a selection of those and run a MEGA FINALS Survivor to find the BEST Neal Morse song!
Thoughts? Comments? Questions? Ideas and suggestions? Am I crazy? Maybe...

So, not many Tool fans around here huh? ;) But, I will leave my question here also - as Queensryche Survivor is coming to an end because we have only one album left, consolation and the finals I want to ask You Guys if somebody would be interested in Deep Purple Survivor? I always wanted to do this here, Deep Purple is a classic band that deserves any, even the smallest attention in every minute ;) It's a good moment to do this, Their last album Infinite is out there for quite a while and unfortunetely it seems that it will be last DP album. So it's a good moment to sum up DP classic discopgraphy ;) What do You think? :yarr

And yes I agree. But, I know Iced Earth very well only from the first album to The Horrow Show, so it would be a good way to get known with these albums with Owens. Maybe, if no one will want to start it, I'll try to run it after Helloween Survivor, that would be cool, I think :)

Idea: we've had survivors and we've had leagues, how about a "Dream Theater world cup"? we could use the same rules of the world cup:
- 32 teams / songs qualifying (13 albums x 2 winners make 26 finalists - do an album survivor first to award more slots to albums that fare better)
- 8 groups of 4 songs each with the mini-league format
- From then on, direct matches with elimination one against one until we reach the finals!
Maybe since the qualifying would take forever with the usual survivor format, it could be done quicker by having a single poll to pick up the winners, like:
- Vote your favorite DT albums (top albums get more songs)
- Vote your favorite songs off this and that album (top 2 songs, and more songs from the albums that fared better in the albums poll get more songs)
- Have 32 songs qualified
- Maybe do a single poll on those 32 songs, in order to estabilish top seeds (we don't want A Change of Seasons, Octavarium and Metropolis in the same group mh?)
- Sort all the 8 groups and use the World Cup template to lay out the road to the finals (Winner of group A against runner up of group B, and so on)
- Have the mini-league for the 8 groups, and then the knockout stage until the finals
Sounds fun?

Yeah,sounds good IMO. I've done something similar with Helloween albums, with more partiicpants it would be a cool fun :)

I toyed with the idea of having a world cup format. Could be fun. Only problem is that I think if you have the songs fairly distributed, it would be very predictable. But give it a whirl if it sounds fun to you.

Seems like a good idea. Maybe the qualification bit needs some tweaking, but I don't really know how else we could do it. Surely if we're going to do a poll of the 32 songs to determine seeding, then that will give us a pretty good indication of who will win the whole thing.
But the idea in itself is very interesting, and could revitalize the Dream Theater tournament.

regardless of the format you're going to use, the songs that win will always be very predictable. hell, add Learning to Live and Breaking All Illusions (maybe SDOIT) and I can hand you the top 5 right there.

Just redo the top 16 from the last league or survivor there's no point dicking about for half year just to end up with nearly identical results

But in my suggestion we'd go quickly through the qualification - since the point should be to mimic the world cup and have 8 groups of 4 songs and then a knockout stage, the qualifications should not be done as a survivor, voting each song out at a time, but with a direct single poll.... 1 poll to determine the favorite albums and which albums get more songs, and then each album gets a single poll to vote the favorites, rather than the least favorite one song at a time. You'd have 1 + 13 rounds that can be done in 2 weeks, or a single month with the 48h voting time format.

No, this has beenproven untrue countless times. It has to do with the results actually changing over time, because the composition of the teams change. Dream Theater's song will however always stay the same.

I would like to announce that Iced Earth Survivor is being prepared at the moment :) It will have pre survivor part of course which determines the amount of songs that qualify from each album into the finals. It will have artwork survivor part as well, because IMO Iced Earth album covers deserves it. It will start probably somewhere in the beginning of August, maybe faster so You have a lot of time for relistening Iced Earth discography. ;)

Oh wow, as someone who considers The Mars Volta (one of) their favourite artist(s), I should really look more into their bonus tracks, have not heard of most of those! This survivor would be a great opportunity to do that, though I quickly youtubed some of the stuff and it seems for example Caviglia is just a 2 minute passage with nothing really to it

What's weirder is the reason why they had to split it up at all. Apparently they had to split it because they'd only be paid an EP's wages if they released a 5-track album. Like, I don't care what label you are, 76 minutes is not an EP. :lol

Hmm, I'm not sure if I can do this. Noctourniquet is super inconsistent for me as I love 3 or 4 tracks on it but don't really care for the others. Octahedron is the same but I only love about 2 and the others aren't as bad but the highs not as high either. Amputechture, Deloused and Frances are all god-tier for me (Frances being the 10/10) and Bedlam just a tad below it

Bedlam is my favourite TMV album and I'm curious about all the bonus tracks of that album that I've never heard before. It's like they had a second cd of b-sides. I was aware of all the other bonus tracks though.
They are not one of my favourite bands but I have listened to all their albums.
I never got Frances The Mute, I simply didn't understand the wasting of time in that album. I didn't have an explanation about 7 minutes out of 12 of Miranda or about almost 10 minutes at the end of Cassandra Gemini. It passed 8 or 10 years since I listened to that album and I've never did it in full probably. Plus, I downloaded a very bad recording of the album when I was 15 or something because of ignorance about what kbps would mean. I could try again to listen to it, but I have doubts about the reevaluation of certain moments of the album. Amputechture suffers from the same problem (always skipped the first and last track) but contains my two favourite TMV songs which are Tetragrammaton and Day Of The Baphomets.

Well, now that this thread is active again, I'm just gonna say that I listened to Bedlam again yesterday, & now I kinda agree with Parama. It's awful.
Also I've been having second thoughts about doing the survivor, since I only really enjoy the first 3 TMV albums, & even then I have heavily edited versions of all of them. :/

The new Dream Theater album Distance Over Time will be released in 3 weeks time and I thought some time after that we can do a DT album championship if there is enough interest in it.
My plan is to run the 14 DT records in a round robin championship, so there would be 13 rounds altogether. In each round every album would play against another and you could vote for the best of the two in each of the seven matchups. The winner would get 2 points, the loser 0. In case of a tie both records would get 1 point. This way we could get a pretty accurate DT album pecking order. :metal
What are your thoughts? Shall we do this? If yes, when shall we start?

It's been a couple years since my last Survivor, and three years since the last Spock's Beard one, but I've done SB every 3 years since 2010, so I think it's time for me to do the 4th Spock's Beard Survivor here.
I'll probably take it slow to start, and do 2-day rounds and run two albums at a time to start with. I'll probably get the home thread up and running soon, but not sure when I'll get around to starting the first rounds. So, please keep an eye out for that!

Can I make a proposal for this thread: that we add the name of the champion song from each survivor listed here, as a sort of Hall of Fame/Roll of Honour thing? It might involve a little bit of work, but it's only a case of clicking through each survivor listed and seeing which song won, then adding it to its listing on this thread.
