Meet JP at your local Costco!
-
:lol So, I was just hanging out at my local Guitar Center, when suddenly...
-
:lol
-
MPs favorite guitarists. And Steve Lukather.
-
That was awesome. JP was actually pretty animated. Normally he's so laid back he almost seems like he has no personality.
-
Well, if you REALLY want to see him animated, go to a meet and greet and ask him in person whether he was lip synching on the ADTOE or Along for the Ride tours. :lol
-
Damn he's so short! And Gilbert is so deaf :heart
-
I love Captain Lee, the guy is just full of happiness and enthusiasm for what he does.

With an entirely new setlist, they seem to have a lot on their plate for this 1.5 month gap in touring. Jordan seems to have been at NAMM for days now. And I'm sure they all spent time with their families on the holidays. I guess it's really only MM that needs to learn new material. Even so, it probably takes a bit of time to re-learn songs that they haven't played in years, as complex as they are.

PMU, Metropolis, LTL, UAGM and TTT are the five most played songs according to setlists.fm, so I don't think it's gonna take that much work to re-learn the songs.
Also I'm pretty sure they could play PMU and Metropolis in their sleep. Those songs have been played to death especially.
-
There's gonna be a lot more than that on the setlist. Likely one of 8VM/ACOS, too. I mean, I realize these guys are good and all. But they have about 3 hours of material to memorize and play to a click track. It's really amazing what they do.
-
I'm not sure they're going to use a click for this. I mean, they might. But the vibe I got is that they kinda want to keep this tour leg loose, so it would not surprise me if they ditched the click for this.

That would be mind bogglingly awesome.
-
I would also love that.
I think there are a few reasons MM is practicing more than everyone else. The obvious answer is that he hasn't been in the band as long and there are going to be at least some songs he hasn't played before. But I also get the impression from the videos that he likes to rework his drum parts every time. JP and JR stay pretty faithful to how they originally recorded the music.
Plus the guy seems like a practicing freak, even more than the others.
-
That is all true. But as I said in the other thread, while there definitely is plenty of "new" (to him) material in the set, they also picked a lot of the "favorites" from the last 3 tours so that he would not have to learn an entire set list from scratch and be overwhelmed. So that is why, for example, you are going to see BAI in the set.

I hope they don't use it. I also hope that, if they don't use it, they add some extra instrumental jamming or something in. There was a lot of that on the IW tour so it would fit...
-
Awesome interview!
In terms of the guys doing other stuff before this new tour kicks off, I'd bet DT only rehearse together for maybe a week tops (probably less) before the tour starts. They are professionals, practice is personal, rehearsal is relational. They will all show up extremely practiced and prepared knowing their parts, so they will probably only need a few days tops to rehearse.

Indeed.
Maybe a return of some extended jamming spots?
-
Dude, don't play with my emotions.

:lol It would be the perfect storm of DT changes. Set list with all of I&W, plus an epic, and other tunes, plus no click, plus some jamming....

So no elaborate visuals for this tour?

They can and have done elaborate visuals without a click, if that's what you mean, but it requires more work from the crew.
I wouldn't get my hopes up for it though. I expect they'll stick to the click, since that's what this lineup is used to, and for ease.
It rhymes, so it must be true. :P
-
Honestly, I don't think so either. For people like JR and JP it's a boon since it keeps them from possibly fudging their solos when the inevitable "live speedup" happens. And I'm not sure from their vantage point they even notice how the spontaneity of the performance suffers.

I loved this video. :lol

OMG did you ask him that?? What did he say?? :lol
Because the further they got into the ADTOE tour, the less you heard his voice, and the more you hear the track. The AFTR tour, almost completely just the track... other than I think TOT. Also BTS and TSM on the ADTOE tour wasn't a track.

That would be awesome!!! I was thinking the same thing. And one of the things I loved about the 2015 tour was that they ditched the backing tracks. It seems the one thing you can count on with DT is that they change things up. Even if they use the click or the tracks for one tour, it doesn't mean they'll continue to forever. Same goes for static setlists in my prediction... They're enjoying it now, but I bet it will change again eventually. Then will be the interviews with "Yeah, one thing on this tour was that we decided to go back to rotating setlists, so if you go see a show on this tour and another one the next night, you might get to see something new..." etc...

I didn't "ask" him about it, but I brought up that it was being discussed on the forums. I believe it was on the Along for the Ride tour after LALP had come out, and people were erroneously saying he was definitely lip synching on there as well as on the current (AFTR) tour. So, I had the benefit of a couple of things to know better. First off, I was there for sound check before the show. James did not come out for that sound check, so there was no singing. But without James singing lead, I could hear the backing track clearly and hear all the harmony parts, which are all James. That backing track is the loudest thing you hear at the shows in terms of the backing vocals. Second, during the show itself, I was about 10-15 feet from JP, and I could hear him singing. Not through the P.A.--but I could hear his unamplified vocals because I was so close to where he was (obviously, because of how loud the P.A. sound is, I could not hear him all the time, but there were definite moments where I could). So I knew he was actually singing, and no just lip synching over James' pre-recorded backing track.
So after the show, I brought up the rumor that he was lip synching, and how people need to understand what is actually going on. His response was basically along the lines of, "WHAT?? How could people look at me and not know I am actually singing? That's ridiculous!" But he also pointed out that, in his words, he isn't anywhere near the vocalist that James is, so it was intentional that his voice is VERY low in the mix on the vast majority of songs (exceptions would be, for example, his harmony call-and-response parts on The Silent Man).
But his reaction was funny. He was kinda miffed, but kept his sense of humor about it.

Let me just make it clear that I am NOT saying they aren't using a click or backing tracks. I have no idea. But I just got the general feeling that this tour is going to be more loose, so it would not surprise me if they did not use a click for some or all of the show. By the same token, it wouldn't surprise me if they DID use one either.

That was hilarious how Gilbert started interviewing everyone and suddenly a wild Steve Morse appeared. :lol
-
Awesome! :lol
-
Wow, I barely recognized Paul Gilbert. I hadn't seen him in anything since the first Yellow Matter Custard, which was 13-14 years ago, so there ya go. I guess he ages just like the rest of us. :lol :lol

They can and have done elaborate visuals without a click, if that's what you mean, but it requires more work from the crew.
It's also not nearly as impressive. One example would be the screens used for Prophets of War. They put the "TIME...FOR...CHANGE" lyrics on the big screen but were a split second behind. A split second might not seem like a big deal but when the words only last four a half a second, the lag is noticeable.

Yup. Adore his videos with Chappers.

How to play guitar, in three words or less (with JP at the end)

Cool video. It's fun to see them in a less formal setting. JP seemed like he was in a good mood.
I never imagined this thread would have setlist spoilers, especially since the tour hasn't even started yet, but I suppose it would be better not to assume. I should just avoid all things DT for a few months until I see them. I know some people love to find out ahead of time, but I always prefer being surprised.
-
Just watched it earlier today.
Check Music is Win channel if you like watching Youtube videos :P he is great guitar player and also very funny.
-
That video was awesome. Just serves to further highlight why I like PG so much. Outside of guitar playing, he's just such an amazingly likeable guy.
Also, Los Lobotomys. That's a name I hadn't heard in a long time.

Steve Morse & John Petrucci interview each other, also from NAMM

Man...that should be the new thing. Musicians interviewing fellow musicians.

Then check out "Face to Face" with Rick Wakeman interviewing guests like Brian May, Tony Iommi, Jon Lord etc.. Some of it is on youtube. :-)
