Two members of Tower of Power, a group that has been an R&B institution for nearly 50 years, were hit by a train Thursday night as they walked across tracks before a performance in their hometown of Oakland, but both survived, their manager said.

Calling it an "unfortunate accident," manager Jeremy Westby said in a statement that drummer David Garibaldi and bass player Marc van Wageningen are "responsive and being treated at a local hospital."

Garibaldi has been with the group since 1970. Van Wageningen is substituting as bass player.

I've met Garibaldi on a couple occasions...he's an amazing drummer but a bit of a prick, at least to the people at the clinics I attended. Be that as it may, I'd never want to see him hurt. Sucks.

I saw him at one clinic and he welcomed us all to come up and get autographs and talk and as we all lined up he started talking with his drum tech and basically ignored every single person who came up to him other than to sign a glossy photo. When it was my turn (I was perhaps 14), I said it was really great to see him play and thanked him for the clinic. He never stopped talking to his tech, never broke eye contact, took my photo, signed it, and handed it back to me without any other acknowledgment that I was there.

Still, he's an amazing drummer and this accident is just freakishly weird. At least they are recovering.
