Title: I'm new...
Post by: Scottjf8 on November 22, 2016, 01:17:01 AM
...to Dream Theater, (mostly) altogether.

I'm one of those rock and metal fans who knew of DT but couldn't name one song that isn't titled "Pull Me Under." It's not like I don't dig prog rock, since I'm a HUGE fan of Rush, and even dig older Genesis.  I even saw them live once, when they opened for Maiden in 2010.  I guess I'm lucky enough to say that I saw them with MP before he left the band.

However, in the last few months, I decided to check out some DT stuff, and holy shit have I been missing out on some really amazing stuff.  I've (strangely enough perhaps) started with the most recent stuff that they did with MP and worked my way backward...  so far, I think Nightmare to Remember is a current favorite song...  I really like most of the Black Clouds album, as well as Systematic ...  I've listened to some of the Mangini stuff, but something like the Astonishing is so much music, it's hard to take in...  and I think that the album is designed to not pick and choose stuff to listen to, but take in the whole thing as one big story (as I presume JP intended to when he wrote the story/concept.)

So hi, my name is Scott, and I'm discovering some really good shit...

Welcome to DT forums!  So glad you decided to get into their music. There are so many great albums to take in.  Its a long journey worth taking, so enjoy the ride! It's hard to tell people which album to start with. I've had good luck with Octavarium, which is a good representation of what they are all about. Just one example..

SFAM was the first DT album I ever heard (also the first prog album I ever heard) and was instantly sold. You should give it a try  ;D

I discovered them back in 2010 and have never looked back :)

If you like the heavier side of DT, spin Train of Thought from start to finish - one of the best progressive metal albums ever recorded in my opinion.  Also, don't neglect Six Degrees or the live DVDs like Scenes from New York, Live at Budokan or the Score DVD.  Though I always dug their music, I actually became a full fledged "fan" watching DT DVDs with the audio commentary on.

Only thing I would add is perhaps try not to underestimate some of the live stuff. When listening through their catalogue, I often came across a live versions of certain tracks that gave me a new point of view on a song and got me more interested and excited about the original.

Just because there structural similarities doesn't mean the songs sound or feel similar. In that case every pop song should sound the same because of the A-B-A-B-C-B formula they go for.

I've been on the DT express since 1991 but I am always happy to stop to let new passengers on!!

If you like heavier stuff, go with Train of Thought or Octavarium or even Falling into Infinity

If you want Proggy Stuff, try Images and Words or  Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

But my favorite DT album is AWAKE!

I am very excited for you!  I am new about 1 year into DT. It has been the most enjoyable year of music for me ever.  I have had a continual turnover of
favorites, but I think Scenes from a Memory has always been on top. I saw them on tour 3 times last year - just Wow!!  The only problem ( if you can call it that),
is that I can't listen to other music now. I have been trying. But I always just want to get back to DT music.  It satisfies me in ways no other music does.  I started with the heavier stuff, and have grown into the more "proggier" stuff - which can me different things to different people I think.  The fun part is after a while when you have skipped songs because they don't nab you at first, and then you listen because you have time or whatever. And then it's like "oh! new favorite!". And example of this for me was 6:00 from the Awake album.  Have fun!!!! :metal

Agreed. For me it's Octavarium (title track). I never got into the album back when it came out. I always liked Panic Attack but everything else was forgettable. But now all these years later I can't stop listening to Octavarium.

It's weird because I didn't listen to any prog at the time.  I was more of a metal guy, and still am, so the rest of the album was interesting, but didn't immediately click.  I liked it, thought the band was fantastic, but it was hard for my first experience listening to such long tracks.  My neighbor in my apartment building, a chick I hardly knew, lent me I&W and Awake and that's when I really got hooked and then enjoyed Octavarium a lot more.  It's probably on the lower half of my DT album rankings, but definitely has a special place in my heart as well as Panic Attack since that was really the track that got me to look more into DT (well after listening to them cover the entire Number of the Beast album  :lol)

Yea, funny story.  Met her in the laundry room on my floor.  She not only lent me those albums which I didn't realize at the time how big of masterpieces they were, she also introduced me to the TV show Lost.  I started watching with her in her apartment with her friends.  She was really cute too.  But then her weird boyfriend moved in a couple months later and we hardly hung out again.

1.  I'm finally getting into Octavarium (the song.)  It's growing on me... I hated the opening Jordan jerking off part, but since someone said it's his "ode" to Pink Floyd (Shine on you crazy diamond) I get it more... I've listened a few times and it's growing on me.

2.  Today's my birthday. :)

3.  Voices might be one of my favorite songs ever from DT.  It's so good.  And "In the name of God."

4.  I'm kinda bummed how late to the party I am... and I know, always welcome...  however, it sucks to know how much awesome music I'm liking that I'll likely NEVER hear in concert.  I hope one day I'll get Dance of Eternity, but that's more likely than songs like In the name of God, ITPoE, Octavarium even...  I don't see them playing shows in the next few years and playing some of these older epics...  or even something like Stream of Consciousness..  I wonder if MM even knows any of those types of songs.  I know he learned ANTR for the tryouts, so since he learned it, why not play it?  I looked on setlist.fm and they haven't even played ANTR since the last MP tour.  C'mon guys.

5.  My DT12 vinyl showed up the other day... it's awesome...  except, MM's drums don't sound any better.

Happy birthday, Scott.

It really is a fantastic song.  But at the same time, it really is a bit much for a new fan to take in.  For something that long, just give it time to grow on you.  You might also really enjoy live performances of it.  Have you checked out Score?  I would recommend buying it and sitting down to watch it.

As far as the opening of Octavarium, I really love it, despite that it can feel like kind of a chore to get through when you are wanting to get right to the song proper.  But it is such an atmosphere builder.  Since DT have never been shy about hiding their influences, even very specific influences in their songs, I always thought it would have been awesome if they did the four-note B♭, F, G, E progression from Shine On in live versions of Octavarium.  Maybe some day.

C'mon guys.

Well, the thing about DT is that they are REALLY good about trying to rotate almost everything in at some point.  REALLY long songs and ballads are a challenge (long songs because of the amount of set time they eat up, and ballads because you can only play so many, and they usually have a couple of new ones each album).  So it wouldn't surprise me if ITPOE never came back again in full.  But I think they know how revered Octavarium is, so I would expect it to return at some point despite its length.  I think the others that you mention are also pretty likely at some point.  You just have to be patient.

The other thing is, there are really good live performances of most of those songs captured on the band's live releases.  As I posted above, if you haven't started checking some of those out, you might want to think about it.
Title: Re: I'm new...
Post by: cramx3 on March 22, 2017, 10:48:04 AM
My only concern with seeing some of those songs live is that DT isn't getting any younger and they haven't had rotating setlists in awhile.  The positive is that they do a really good job of playing different songs each tour so there is always the chance the next time around they do play one of those songs.

The Score opening of Octavarium is much more of a chore for me to get through than the studio version. I really like the studio version. And I don't like how much faster tempo of the Score version. It's still great though.

There's a podcast called "Dream Theater Radio" and the guy seriously breaks every album and song down.  It's insane good....

Also... I wonder...  what would DT be like today if Portnoy hadn't left?  Would we have had the last 3 albums?  I really don't think he'd have gone along with TA.

As to the last question, I think he absolutely would have.  First off, this sort of thing is right up his alley because he absolutely loves concept albums and he loves Broadway-style productions.  It isn't the type of album he would have come up with on his own because that's not how he writes.  But that's okay because he wouldn't have been in on the writing anyway, since JP wanted it to be composed strictly by the two members of the band who play compositional instruments.  So if we assume they still would have arrived at this point in time with JP wanting to write The Astonishing exactly how he wrote it in the real world, I absolutely think MP would have been onboard.  Second, JP is very assertive, especially when it comes to his creative vision.  While he seems to be very welcome to accept creative input from others (e.g., the changes the label and Desmond Child wanted on FII, and input from band members on songs he has primarily composed), we can also point to clear instances of him bringing in a mostly finished product that ends up not really being touched or changed by the other band members (e.g. Wither).  If he felt strongly about doing a concept album, I don't see any reason why he would have had a problem asserting himself in that regard with MP being in the band.

Wasn't there word that the idea, certainly not set in stone, for the hypotetical DT11 with Pornoy would have been a concept album? and then an evening with tour with the concept album in the first set and the Twelve Steps in the second.

I am pretty new also (a little over a year).  I don't really feel bad about missing as I can just listen to them all the time and it remain pretty fresh :). And Octavarium was one of my earlier favorites.  I love the long lead in, but one of the things I dig about DT is the orchestral aspect, plus so much anticipation and build up - I do hope to see that live some day......
I did see them 3 times last year :rollin and hopefully more later this year when they come back to the states. I just can't get over how much I am enjoying their music!! I feel a little ridiculous not wanting to listen to anything else, but when I try, I just want to go back to DT.  Hope the honeymoon lasts a looong time. My hubby and 18 y/o think I am nuts, but oh well, I know they are happy to let me drag them to the concerts.  My son - Mr. Metal - I have to have Megadeth, thought TA was not good, but then we went and saw them in Anaheim - about 3 feet from center stage - he had :metal a big change of attitude and said he will go see DT with me anytime.  One by one, I will bring my rocker friends to the Great side of music...

I can't imagine Portnoy taking such a hands off approach for a concept album.

When my college roommate and I started getting into DT and obsessing over every album, we would both tell each other that DT ruined music for us because nothing else was close to as amazing as them.   :lol  Obviously that did not happen, but I totally understand the feeling of not wanting to listen to anything else as you discover their catalog.

So the other day I was listening to ToT with my bose headphones and heard something I'd never noticed, the "chanting" the last verse on ITNOG. I had to crank it to hear it, but pretty cool.  More than just the "glory glory hallelujah part...

I've never been able to hear that very clearly.  I need to try to find a way to isolate that and listen to it.

Off topic, but, what ever happened with the Jammit isolated tracks?.. Weird that the 6DOIT and TOT's tracks were never available..

I didn't pick that up until after listening to it a few times. It's so faint that it makes it sound haunting. I love it .

If you're talking about the section that starts around 12:58, I noticed it from the first listens, it's not that buried.. :|

So after listening to the 8vm song a hundred times, I learned (thanks Mattheous on Discord/reddit) that the verses leading up to "trapped inside this Octavarium" is each referencing the 8 songs on the album, in order.

Shit like this is so crazy cool.  Also how each song on the album is in each different key, going from F back to F for a full octave.

Ten years of listening to the album, and this is news for me. Fantastic.

The backing vocals I have noticed, but clips? I'll have to give it another listen.

He actually says "Root", "Second" (...) and "Octave", which was the original name for the song/album before they changed it due to its similarity with the album Octane from Spock's Beard, released earlier the same year..

About the clips, even if with some effort you can hear them all, the most listenable are The Answer Lies Within, I Walk Beside You, Panic Attack and Never Enough.. The rest I can barely hear them..
