Title: Tulsa and Grand Prairie back to back..my experience
Post by: dtrocker25 on November 17, 2016, 11:10:12 AM
DREAM THEATER IN OKLAHOMA .well that in itself is saying something...the Brady Theater is an older venue with lots of character..i almost felt sorry for the people who paid for the closest seats..they were old folding chairs..i was in the first section on floor with actual seats which were old and close together but fine ..The band was tight..great sound and lights...it seemed to get louder as they got everything dialed in and by the Encore of As i Am...Spirit. .then Pull me Under everyone then could fully see and hear why DT is a machine of epic proportions...James was incredible..period..JP on A New Beginning melted ears off...Mangini technically amazing playing..JR and JM world class as usual..probably 1200 ppl in attendance.
Crowd was energetic and some stood through out...

Now Grand Prairie...not disappointed in band at all..but..larger venue..ive seen them play there before and sound was always great but this time it started off very tingy..Mangini turned down way to much...Johns guitar tone was way off compared to Tulsa..i was in a pretty good seat 2nd section back just left of center yet it sounded way  off ..it got much better 2nd set and encore...crowd was probably 1500 to 2000.very subdued until late in the show and encore
..James was  stiil good for back  to back shows..
Overall the trip to Tulsa was the better experience. .the smaller venue made for a much richer sounding and visual pleasing show..i wish they could have played Bass Hall or Dallas Symphony location..it was a fun back to back DT weekend and would do it again. ...hopefully  I&W 25 will roll thru

Sound at Nextstage varies depending on what the band wants to do. Often times it's excellent, but with DT it's usually weak. In this case it was loud as fuck, even by my standards. That didn't help with fidelity. The venue has one of the best bottom ends I've ever heard (seen Yes there plenty of times), but it's woefully underutilized with DT since they always want JMX inaudible. For the life of me I can't figure out why they insist on playing there. It's a nice venue, but ill-suited for them. I always assumed they were just set in their ways, they were married to the Bronco Bowl, as well, yet every other city seems to see them play all over the place.

The Majestic is exactly what they want in a venue, and it's appropriately sized for them. Music Hall at Fair Park would work, although it's still 3500 seats, which is 2000 too many.

And I'm not sure there were 1000 people there Sunday night. It sold better than I expected, but the coverage wasn't particularly dense and they didn't offer that many seats to begin with. I'm guessing they sell a 2k seat configuration, and if it was half full it wasn't by much.

In Tulsa it was crisp..loud..clear..could hear Myung perfectly...could hear everything Mangini was doing..especially cymbals. ..Grand Prairie not so much..i did enjoy the video presentation and the Nomac sequences much more than i thought....very cool

I managed to see Symphony X and Blind Guardian at the Bronco bowl maybe in 2001...not sure what year it was. Where you there as well?

Nah, missed that one. Was never a Sympony X fan. Coolest show I saw at the Bronco Bowl was this one:

Went to the Tulsa show and agree they sounded amazing. The Brady is such a great place, despite being an older venue. I was nervous that the crowd would be less than it was and I was pleasantly surprised at the energy level especially from Hymn of a Thousand Voices on. I saw the show in Boston on the first leg and I loved it, but the Tulsa show was better. I thought the encore was brilliant as my biggest complaint about my first viewing was that it was a bit anti-climatic.
