Title: Insane things that rich people spend their money on
Post by: Orbert on October 24, 2016, 12:18:56 PM
In an alternate universe, Orbert is a multi-billionaire and likes to buy things that normal people cannot, because it makes him feel special.

Today, his package from St. Eriks arrived, and his hot female butler opened it and brought it to him:

They are perfect.  Five of them, in perfect condition:

Of course, they look like potato chips.  They are potato chips, you uncultured swine!

Certified, premium potato chips from St. Eriks.

His butler presented one to him.

He fired her, for daring touch one of his potato chips.  Bummer.  She was hot.  But rules are rules.  That's okay, the next one will have bigger tits.

I am completely serious (https://www.sterikschips.se/eng).  Over $50 (U.S.) for a box of five, and you can't have any, because they're all sold out.  Alternate Orbert bought the last box.  If a Star Trek-type event happens and universes collapse into one and I ever meet this alternate Orbert, I will punch him in the face.

I can't see any of your pics at work. Forgive me for not commenting on what they are.

This is always the first thing that comes to mind when I dream of that kind of money. I know it probably seems weird in a world full of yachts and private limos, but if I had my own private RC facility, I'd me a happy man. There'd be a massive wood/metal shop off to the side as well.

Well, at least Alternate Orbert properly referred to them as potato chips, and not "crisps" or some other such nonsense.

I don't understand only buying the most expensive things simply because you're loaded.

If i had like 50m in the bank I'd obvs get a few things but I wouldn't blow it on Lear Jet flights to Paris to eat at the Ritz or Hilton or whatever every single night...

That seems pretty cool to me.  I'm not sure where you'd draw the line, but an RC track would be on this side of it for me.  I like model trains, and having a huge shed in the backyard for setting up my electric trains would be awesome.  I see this as being along those lines, feeding the hobby.  Some hobbies take more room than others.

If I was into boats, I guess the analog would be owning a private lake for just my boats.  That's over the line for me, so I guess it's all relative.

Speaking of which, if I was ridiculously rich, I would spend an obscene amount of money on beer. Instead of making 15 different trades and trips to breweries until I can get my hands on it, I could just pay the secondary market price and drop a grand on a rare barrel-aged stout.

I actually just moved to the Dayton/Cincinnati area, and I don't think there's all that much out here that people are interested in. I was between Pittsburgh and Cleveland before. Voodoo (barrel room stuff especially), Jackie O's (also known for barrel-aged excellence), and Fat Head's were usually the most sought after, though Fat Head's distribution has expanded quite a bit now. The Brew Gentlemen in Pittsburgh are also making insanely good northeast style IPAs, but they don't distribute.

Those potato chips are pretty mental.

Having said that, there are apparently people who pay for gold flakes on their dessert. Literal gold grated on to their ice cream or whatever.

FIVE CHIPS?   That's the first handful, and only to get the taste before I dig in for more.   If I'm "rich" I'm going to make sure whatever I buy there are more than FIVE.   FFS.

For me?  TRAVEL.   I'm not big on luxury things - a pair Bruno Magli's are just lost on me, but I would GO places.   Oh, and I might have a boat to go those places.   And I'd have 7.1 instead of 5.1 surround sound.  And the 100 inch TV instead of the 60 inch.   And the nanny.  For me, not the kids.   For me.  And she'd look like Leah Gotti.

Ah, yeah, don't know of any noteworthy breweries out that way. I have had some excellent BA beers from both Voodoo and Jackie O's in the past, and some tasty Brew Gentlemen growlers at a holiday bottle share last year.

I wouldn't change much in my lifestyle more than a nice house in a good neighbourhood basically and a nice car however the one thing I would spend money on is travel. I would travel the world and visit places i've only seen in movies or read about. Go to antartica and see polarbears, visit remote tropical islands like pitcairn islands, roadtrip across the US, see the hobbit houses on New Zeeland, go to Australia and encounter a wild Blob and stuff like that.

I recall one time, when watching the Travel Channel, that a restaurant had this pizza that cost like $2,000 and it had some fancy olive oil and caviar and stuff like that.  I'm sitting here thinking surely this sort of pizza cannot taste that good where it is worth spending $2,000 on one box?  Like what's the difference in taste between a $2,000 pizza compared to a $5 frozen pizza bought at a convenience store?  It can't be that big of a difference in taste to spend another $1,995 more?

Up until now probably nobody had ever heard of St. Erik's. Now we're all talking about them. Might prompt somebody to try their beer if it's available. Moreover, if we're being honest, there isn't one of us that wouldn't want to try one of those chips, just so we can ridicule it. If those people were smart, and I suspect they are, they'd find away to mass produce those things at 95% or so of the quality and charge $3/bag instead of $1.29 for the Lay's equivalent. They'd sell a bundle from people who now know who and what they are and want to find out what the fuss is about.

edit: Oh, and small house in a large compound somewhere in the NW. And a vacation to Europe and Asia, with a few days in Munich to have my customized BMW manufactured.

I would like a nice house, big enough for me and my family with a couple of extra bedrooms for guests.  I would also like a study.

I'm not much of a car guy, so that wouldn't be an area of blowing money.

The main "stuff" I would spend money on would be music, books, and movies.  I would also travel, and build a home addition for a music room/home studio and lots of instruments to go in it.

But I'm not buying 5 potato chips for $50.00.

Probably.

If millions of dollars showed up in my bank account tomorrow, not much would really change.

I would pay off my school loans and probably buy a 3 bedroom house somewhere in a rural area. Everything else that I want or do as hobbies I can pay for with just regular money from working.

I would probably buy those potato chips though

Not to shit on people's parade or anything, but I actually think about this a lot, and I think all of a sudden "being rich" would be a far bigger pain in the ass than the upside of a boss home theater and great potato chips would overcome.

I think we forget that people like Trump and the Kennedy's were born into it (and so had the infrastructure in place) and Cuban and Gates gradually worked into it (so were able to adjust and accumulate) and so they are equipped to handle this wealth.  I'm comfortable, but I'm not "rich", so I'm not equipped.  I can see all the second cousins and past acquaintances (note I didn't say "friends") coming out of the woodwork with their "Hey, if I only had $50K, I could really get my rap career going! I'll give you a piece of the upside!" and their "Hey, you remember when I took care of that speeding ticket for you?" asking for a little sliver of the pie.  We were talking about this a couple weeks ago when the lottery was some insane number, and when I calculated JUST our parents and the kids - blood family - at the next generation (meaning, my daughter, my wife's kids from a previous marriage, and our nieces and nephews) it was 16.   Then, my brother and my brother-in-law are both with women who have kids from a previous marriage and those kids are both good kids and included in the fam.   So that's another 5.   Add close cousins to me (and my wife) and that's another 8 or 10... now all of a sudden, if you give any serious money, you've taken tens of millions of dollars out.

I might just bury it in the backyard.   After my trip to Munich with el Barto (he doesn't know it yet, but I'm ordering a car too).

Mo' money mo' problems

Totally valid point about people not equipped to become instantly super-rich. But I don't get this "mo money mo problems' mentality. Does wealth really make life more challenging? Is it so hard to not spend all this money on 3rd cousins, blow, and $10 a piece Pringles?

To some people, it is hard.  Don't know why.  Maybe, some people has that "wants to be a baller" mentally and actually wants to live it without understanding certain ramifications/circumstances.  This leads to another question.  Is the curse of winning the lottery actually a curse, or just a rare occurrence of unfortunate events after a person wins the lottery?

They really do.  If the question is whether or not they're "worth" 10 bucks each, that's up to the individual.  Or not.  To some, price really is no object.  These chips are the bomb, I like them, I will order a box.  To me, that's nuts, but they don't give a shit what I think anyway, so we're good.

I think it is.   How many people know - I mean KNOW, in the sense of making decisions based on this - that money is how you make money?  Meaning, you can take the principal of your winnings and put it in a vehicle that generates the money you use for your potato chips and blow.   Meaning, you don't walk in to a titty bar with a briefcase filled with $20s (as was done in one case; not surprisingly, the guy got rolled and later claimed bankruptcy).  People who know about money and know about how money works, buy the strip club.  It sounds facetious - and in some cases it is - but there IS a difference between "spending" money and "burning" money.  Mark Cuban owns a plane, sure, but it's written off through the Mavericks, and I imagine when he's not using it, someone else is and they're paying for it (probably Mr. Lottery Winner, who doesn't know better).

Then there's the difference between "the purchase price" and the "maintenance price".   Sure, you buy that boat for a $100K, no big deal, right?   Except, did you know that it needs a slip (could be as much as the boat, with an on-going fee)?  Gasoline/diesel for boats is EXPENSIVE.   Winterizing.  Captaining (if you're not so inclined).  Mooring and dock fees when you take it somewhere.    Cars;  "Oh, I'm buying a LAMBORCHINO!!" not realizing that you can't drive that as a primary car, and you're a fucking idiot if you put it in your garage.  So now you have fees there... all this stuff adds up, and can in some cases (houses, boats) double or even triple your investment.  So if you're not good with money to start with, and you're not protecting your principal, you're going to be in trouble before too long.

Finally, I don't think people realize how much free shit the really wealthy (as opposed to rich) get.   If you can make money for someone else, you can avoid paying for things.  Do you think celebrities PAY for the drinks and stuff at clubs?  Tickets?    Do you know how good it is for a club to have Kim Kardashian or Kanye West at their club?   If they're cool, they drop a couple hundreds on the staff and what not, but they're not paying for the same shit you, Mr. Lottery Winner, is.

It figures Jackie would have the lowdown on Mr. Cage and his wacky spending habits.

Superman comic #1 though.  No problem there.  When you've got money, you buy what you want.  Octopus, shark, albino cobras, that's all silliness.  But an actual collector's item, that's cool.

What Stadler said.  I would be terrified to come into tens or hundreds of millions of dollars.  At least I know I would need sound legal, tax and insurance advice (unlike his Mr. Lottery Winner), but from who?  Who can you trust?  You may be able to trust close family, but they don't likely know anything about managing such money.  How would one select a real professional in these areas?  This would cause me huge amounts of anguish.

Been there, done that... Well I've done both, but young and eager is the better beaver. They usually taste like sweet roses as opposed to a dusty old house plant.

But we're talking about a nurse.

I just think that if someone was in charge of your physical well-being, and on your personal payroll, it would be prudent to have a more experienced nurse. Being young might mean they have a more modern education, but I feel that much of what they learn is on the job.

Ok, here's a good one for the thread....

This is a pic of a cut of meat we got at work, it's a grade A5 Matsusaka wagyu ribeye steak, and runs about $80 a pound, untrimmed our price. For the customer, we're charging $24 an ounce....

(I tasted some of the trim, better than anything I've ever had by far)

I'm a nice, well-marbled ribeye's biggest fan, but that really looks like overkill to me. Maybe it's just the lighting in the picture, but it doesn't look very appealing.

Also, how do you slice it to sell by the ounce? Do you slice off a steak and tell them what it costs afterward, or take your best shot when they ask for 13.2794 ounces?

It's not the lighting, it is that marbled. And it's out of this frikkin world... As to how they do it, I'm not sure, it's on the night a la carte menu and I'm a day banquet guy. I do know it's a 3 ounce minimum, so maybe they have it blocked off in 3,4, and 5 ounce portions and cryo-vacced. I'll try and remember to ask the chef tomorrow.

Here's something that I thought is pretty insane for rich people to spend money on.  Playing poker at the highest stakes against the top players and not be rattled at all if they lose a lot.  I recall Guy Laliberte (Cirque Du Soleil founder) losing like around $20 million dollars in online poker and, to him, it was probably didn't affect him at all.  Any money he does win goes to his One Drop Foundation.  Heck, I watched, a few days ago, on Twitch of an gas trader guy name Bill Perkins (another wealthy businessman and amateur player) and he was playing Omaha online and was figuratively lighting money on fire and he was playing and streaming on a moving yacht.

Ahhh, I can only imagine what it would be like to be filthy rich and lose a lot of money playing poker and have it not affect me or my wealth at all and just chuckle in the end, knowing I'm having a fun time playing against the top players at high stakes.

Now that is a pool.  And I'm thinking if you can afford a pool like this, then paying someone to take care of it for you isn't an issue.  It's just a regular expense, like your electric bill, which you don't worry about either.

Indoor pool would be a must. Maybe one inside a conservatory so when it's raining you can see / hear the rain hitting the glass and be indoors in your pool all warm.

I've always been fascinated by people who don't play but collect vintage guitars.  Some collectors throw down millions of dollars for old beat up instruments.  I suppose there is an investment aspect to it though I think the market is topping out now.  I can understand why a performing/recording musicians may invest in something like that, but non players who stick them in glass cases make me scratch my head.  Beautiful instruments need to be played in my humble opinion.  Norman's Rare Guitars is one of my favorite youtube channels.  It's cool to see all the vintage instruments they trade and the great musicians who buy them.  A lot of those cats have custom/signature instruments built just for them, yet they'll go into Norm's and drool over a vintage axe like a kid in a candy store.

Yeah, that is interesting. I've seen Joe Bonamassa, who seemingly owns more guitars than I can count, in a few videos there, and he's always super excited.

Right, but he's a player, and a damn good one AND he actually uses vintage guitars and amps on stage.  When you see him cranking out riffs on a Les Paul, chances are it's a six-figure vintage model.  But, like some businessman who buys them up and keeps them locked away, not even on display, I trip on that because it is something I'd never do personally.  I suppose they could be interested in the rich history, the investment value, or just the artistry of guitars, I just can't imagine having instruments I didn't play.  Honestly, I can't think of anything I'd collect that I didn't personally use.  I guess I'm just not the collector type.

On Charlie Watts buying cars to sit in, now that is such a British rock god kind of thing to do.  But, the guy has been super wealthy most of his life so I suppose at some point you just figure what the heck.  But, sheesh, if I had a bunch of slick rides I'd certainly be driving them at least once in a while!

Oh, I totally agree, I was just kind of throwing out a comment about Norman's Rare Guitars. I actually revisited one of those videos, and Joe Bonamassa was talking about exactly this topic, saying that they need to encourage the next generation of collectors who actually play, and not let all of these guitars end up hidden away in some rich guy's house, never to be seen.

I've stayed away from this thread for a few different reasons. But, I'll just say that ones purchasing habits and power are relative to ones own experience and circumstance. There are things I do and buy that people would think are excessive.  But by no means am I a billionaire.  Far, far from it. But I'm doing okay,  and I don't really care what people think about whether my purchases are insane or not.  For example,  I fly first class every time I fly, if possible.  I'm an old dude,  and I hate being in a small-assed, cramped seat in coach. Besides, I've earned the right and have the means to do so. I know people who think I'm crazy for doing that.  But I think it's far cheaper than a Wheels Up or NetJet membership (although I came close last year of jumping into that game). The point is, I don't think some of the things I spend my money on are crazy or insane. But I know people who think I'm nuts. But, I know I'm blessed. I grew up in a lower middle class family.  So, I  didn't have much growing up. I had enough,  but my family wasn't wealthy. Mrs. Vox grew up the opposite.  Her family was old stock exchange, trust fund rich. Interestingly I'm much more materialistic than she is. I like to spend money on friends, andfamily.  She had to fight the "she's a rich girl" moniker her whole life.  So, she's not into material things. But I want to enjoy life. I'd probably buy those damn potato chips.  Hell, I bought Mrs. Vox a pound of the worlds most expensive chocolate a few years ago. And over the past 6 years or so I've invested well into the six figures, on a pretty amazing collection of rare Scotch. Insane? I don't think so.
