Wow. That was really in-depth and clearly explained why they ranked the albums this way.
-
Black clouds over Dramatic Turn of Events? Well there's problem no.1
-
Well, at least they got the correct albums in the top 3 (well, actually, they didn't; but I can forgive anyone who puts Images & Words in their top 3 since it is so iconic and does have so many good songs).
-
Train of Thought is too high. A Dramatic Turn of Events and Octavarium are too low. The Top 3 are almost perfect. I would put either Images and Words or Six Degrees on top.
-
We can all quibble about the order based on personal preferences, but at least he got the top 4 (even though my order would be different) and the least best (SC) correct. Good to see some love for DT12, instead of throwing near the bottom like far too many seem to. :tup :tup
I will quibble, however, with leaving When Dream and Day Unite off, as well as calling SFAM universally acknowledged as their best album (that person has obviously never been to this forum :lol).

I think it would scare him.

That's a tough exercise and I think there is a topic about that. It will take time but I will make my ratings one day. I do agree with position 1. But not with many others but it is such a matter of taste.
-
That's my top 7 :D only change could be 6DOIT and Awake but I love them almost equally so I'd ok with it.
-
At least the top 3 is correct, even though I'd argue the order. I guess I can concede 4th place too. TOT isn't a bad 5th choice, but from there it all goes to complete shit.
-
Everyone's (well, most are) talking about this how the ranking fits to their own while all I see is a generic ranking that isn't very well written. Looks like it was made in about 10 minutes.
-
It's always a shame to see Systematic chaos so low. I like how some of the newer albums are in the middle, The Astonishing certainly deserves a good position. The top four is predictable but great.
-
Lists like this are not designed for the die-hards on DT forums, but are useful for potential new fans who are looking for a way in. Still fun to read :-)

12- Systematic Chaos (2007)
garbage list

Falling into Infinity at 11 definitely stands out as a major WTF. It has its faults, but is still pretty darn good overall.

garbage list
I know, right? Should have been at 13 once WDADU was included.

:loser: :loser: :loser:
Yeah FII at 11 is really wtf. It's obviously supposed to be 12th.
-
Always fun reading these lists. It's not ordered the way I would do it, but that's not really the point. Sounded like the guy really loved all of the band's albums after the bottom three or so.

Nice one. :lol

FII is top 5 DT album :|

All things considered, I agree more with this list than most others I've seen around the web.

Yeah, it's at least reasonable. Personally I'd move some things around, but generally it's as valid as anything we'd see around here.

Yeah.
I wouldn't rank Octavarium so low, but it kind of looks like a list I would make.

garbage list

This is wrong on so many levels.
On ADTOE: "The fact they released an album after Portnoy's departure is shocking." No it's not shocking! It just proves that DT are about more than one man, and they came out and produced their very best work.
Octavarium is also too low.
-
ADTOE is your favourite DT album? :O
-
Yes. You have a problem with that?
-
I can't see why anyone would. I wish it sounded better, and it would be middle of the pick on my list, but it's still a damn fine record. :coolio
-
Yes. You have a problem with that?
Of course I don't, but it surprises me. I've never heard anyone say that's their favourite.

:tup For sure. One of DT's best.

It's definitely not one of my favorite album of theirs, but it does contain two of my favorite Dream Theater songs ever. It also has its own particular vibe which is kind of unique in the band's discography. So I'm happy that they've made it.
As for the list, it looks to me like it's a pretty standard one. I don't have much to say about it. I almost wish that they would have included When Dream and Day Unite and put it in the top three. At least it would have been more interesting :lol
-
Below is my ranking. FII in the 5th spot. Also, the fact that prog report didn't include WDADU automatically makes it a garbage list. Is everyone suppose to think that WDADU is DT's worst album so just don't bother to include?
1. SDOIT
2. I&W
3. SFAM
4. Awake
5. FII
6. ToT
7. ADTOE
8. 8VM
9. SC
10. BC&SL
11. WDADU
12. DT12
13. TA
-
Yes. You have a problem with that?
My, aren't we a bit cranky?

Concur. Still my least favorite despite the ToT - BCSL run.

ADTOE is a top 5 easily and technicaly their highest degree of difficulty musical performance among the 4 last album.
-
If they had only moved TA to somewhere in the top 3, and had FII a bit higher, it would be very close to my preferences.
-
I still will never understand how people can rank Octavarium so low. It takes what they tried to do with Falling Into Infinity (more accessible songs that maintain their basic elements) and did it better and then ended the album with what is arguably their best song in the title track (I think it is and most fans rank it at least top five).

Octavarium is a tough album to rank for me. Octavarium is one their best songs, but then you have songs like Never Enough, Panic Attack, and The Answer Lies Within, that bring the album down a few notches. TALW is a good song, but when you have great songs like These Walls, The Root Of All Evil, and Sacrificed Sons, it's tough to be considered above average. So, basically I understand why some people rank it low.
-
I think the title track is one of the most overrated songs ever to be honest though the Razors Edge part is still pretty good. But yeah the album as a whole is probably one of my favorites. SS is EASILY my favorite song off that album though, will never understand the universal love for 8vm (song).
-
though the Razors Edge part is still pretty good
you highlighted the worst part of the song and still don't like it :loser:

My ranking of Octavarium not that far from the bottom (it would be 9th probably if ranking all 13 albums) has more to do with how good many of their other albums are than it does about its quality. Octavarium is a very good record, but many others are just better, IMO.
However, I am not sure I see the comparison to Falling into Infinity. Just about every DT album has a couple songs that, international or not, sound like attempts at being accessible, so they aren't isolated in that regard.

It's my #2. I like it better than almost everything they've done, but IAW is untouchable.
-
ADTOE is probably my favorite DT album, but I haven't really attempted to rank them in a pretty long time. I think it would be close with IaW aswell though.
-
IMO, FII would be a top 5 DT album if it had looked liked this:
New Millennium
You or Me
Peruvian Skies
Hollow Years
Raise the Knife
Hell's Kitchen
Lines in the Sand
Speak to Me
Eve
Trial of Tears
-
I'm doing a top 50 best albums right now, and 8VM is just a flawless album. I do not see anything wrong with and their title track, I consider to be one of the most greatest and pleasant to the ear. Razor's Edge is awesome, the solo, but I think the piece that takes the cake would either have to be "Someone Like Him" or "Full Circle."
Makes me smile everytime.
