Not many women listed. Whats up with that ?
-
No particular order
James La Brie
Peter Gabriel
Eddie Vedder
Natalie Merchant
David Gray
Ray Alder
(young) Geoff Tate
Steve Perry (cheesey, but the guy's got pipes)
Robert Plant
Ed Kowalczyk
I'd put Bono and Yorke up there, but the charm of their voices, for me, rests primarily in how perfectly they fit the music. It's difficult to think about them outside of the soundscapes their voices work within...
I also love Karan Casey and Deirdre Scanlan's vocals (Solas is a favorite band)

Ray and Ed. Excellent choices ! Aside from your more obvious selections. Good list !
-
Not many women listed. Whats up with that ?
I think mainly because most of the music people on this board listen to is generally sung by men, or at least lends itself to male voices. I personally don't like female singers in metal, but I listed a couple from other genres whose voices I do like.

The topic was not top 10 metal vocalists was it ? I listen to much more then metal personally.

No, but look at any thread of people's favourite bands/artists and they are generally rock/metal bands, which are usually fronted by men. It's only natural that most of their favourite vocalists will be from these bands. That's why there are few women in this thread.
-
Anders Friden (In Flames) - while not the best voice, his style and use of whispers/screams is a big part of in flames
:tup
That's why I almost put him on my list. His voice is pretty average and his actual singing ability isn't anything remarkable, either, but DAMN if he isn't fun to listen to.

Birch Boy, I'm going to murder you in your sleep. Or when you're awake. Same results either way.
Yeah, that's a good video to post. But even though Claudio is awesome, I raise you "Learning to Live," "Heartattack in a Layby," "Deadhead," "Hallowed Be Thy Name," "Thunder Road," "Won't Get Fooled Again," "San Jacinto," "And You And I," and "Bohemian Rhapsody." Plus, there are much better Claudio videos to post.

Wow that was fantastic. I hadn't heard that performance before.
And you say he's still not in your top ten?
Yeah. He's great, but the ten I've posted are just sorta godlike. Its kinda the same reason Geddy Lee isn't in my top 10. Claudio is a lot closer than Geddy is though.

Eh? In his heyday, Tate was absolutely stellar, and would be a worthy addition to anyone's top 10 list. And nothing wrong with JLB, either. Neither are in my top 10, but both are great when looking at their whole body of works.

-
Cristina is very underrated. She has a great rock voice, just a mediocre band and a less than mediocre male co-singer.
This. I actually started listening to Lacuna Coil entirely because of the remake of A Tout le Monde that Cristina Scabbia did with Megadeth in 2007, I absolutely love the way her voice and Dave Mustaine's sounded together.

Daniel Gildenlol
Jared Leto (30 Seconds to Mars)

Ronnie James Dio - Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio
Maynard James Keenan - Tool, A Perfect Circle
Chris Cornell - Soundgarden, Audioslave
Mariusz Duda - Riverside
Yes, I know that's 11.
I'm adding another to my list:
Brent Smith (Shinedown)
While I do think Brent Smith has a good voice, he really can't reproduce his material live, as far as I can tell.
When I saw Shinedown, he was absolutely brilliant... except they didn't play Simple Man. :(
-
Not in order:
Matt Smith (Theocracy)
James LaBrie (Dream Theater)
Reese Roper (Brave Saint Saturn)

Ronnie James Dio (DIo, Rainbow, Sabbath)
Geoff Tate (Queensryche)
Rob Halford (Halford, Judas Priest)
Jeff Martin (The Tea Party, The Armada)

Daniel Gildenlow (Pain of Salvation, ex-Flower Kings)
Freddy Mercury (Queen)
Floor Jansen (After Forever, ReVamp, regular on Arjen Lucassen's projects)
Jorn Lande (solo, Masterplan, Ark, millions of other things)
Regina Spektor (solo)
Devin Townsend (various solo projects, Strapping Young Lad)
Dan Swano (Nightingale, and about a million other bands)
Tomi Joutsen (Amorphis)
Christina Aguilera (solo)

There are plenty of amazing singers outside this top 10 of course.

Freddie Mercury
Ronnie James Dio
David Coverdale
James LaBrie
Bruce Dickinson
Paul Stanley
Anneke Van Giersbergen
Steve Walsh

Mark Knopfler's voice suits Dire Straits but he definitely isn't a singer ;D. Although he has gotten better more recently.
On songs like Sultans OF Swing he's sort of talk-singing.

Wow, a 12 year bump!!

Freddie Mercury
Ronnie James Dio

Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth)

Maynard James Keenan (Tool)
Honourable mentions: Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave), Andy Kuntz (Vanden Plas), Neal Morse (Transatlantic).

Steve Hogarth
Steve Perry
Kip Winger
Paul Buchanan
Phil Collins
Peter Gabriel
Nick D’Virgilio
Ted Leonard
David Longdon
Eric Martin
Mark Hollis is the other guy I wanted to get on there somehow.

Oh boy ... only 10? I'm going with a combo of quality AND quantity (ie, disqualifying vocalists who've only fronted 3-4 albums - ala Matt Smith, Michael Eriksen).
Robert Plant
James Labrie (up to DT12)
Floor Jansen
Steve Perry
Russell Allen
Damian Wilson
Jorn Lande
Rik Emmett (homer pick)
Tommy Karevik
Ted Leonard
That seems about right.

Karevik is a good call, forgot about Damian, gonna go edit my list to add him. It was hard to leave Rik off for me, but he was a firm #11.
-
Freddie Mercury
Bono
Ann Wilson
Johnette Napolitano
Gene Simmons (it says "FAVORITE", not BEST; I love his voice, like on "Plaster Caster" or "She's So European")
Paul Rogers
David Coverdale (not when he screams, but when he sings, like on "Starkers In Tokyo")
Anneke
John Wetton (or Jon Anderson; it's a close call)
Greg Lake
No, no Bruce Dickinson; number one FRONT MAN, but not pure vocals.

Russ

Ronnie Milsap. That's excellent. :)
We do need clarity, though, since not all of those are "one name worthy"; Russ Parrish or Russ(ell) Allen? Rob Thomas, Halford, or Zombie?
-
Isn't the Haken singer named Russ something.
Side-note... I notice NO ONE has mentioned him in 3 pages.
-

Ross Jennings. I’m not even sure if Haken fans like his voice.
-
I'm a Haken fan, and his voice is ok, but I'm definitely more about the instrumentation than the vocals for them.
Russ Parrish
Rob Zombie
Annthony Kiedis
Bruce Springsteen
Ronny Milsap
Elvis Costello
Babs Gonzalez
Not sure beyond those 7.

Haha, Rob Thomas would have been a good one too. Actually, Matchbox 20 is a bit unfairly derided in music snob communities, there are some good tunes on Mad Season in particular, "Bent" was always a favorite. I also considered Russ Ballard, Anderson, and Taff, but even though Parrish isn't a vocalist as far as I know, I had to put one outright joke in there.
-
Russ Parrish
Rob Zombie

Bruce Springsteen

I assumed Ann Hathaway. She was unexpectedly good in Les Mis.

Christina Aguilera
Phil Anselmo
Mariah Carey
Brad Delp
Lzzy Hale
James Hetfield
James LaBrie
Amy Lee
Freddie Mercury
Brent Smith

I'm only including vocalists whose songs are mainly sung in English. In no particular order:
James LaBrie
Ray Alder
Michael Kiske
Lee Douglas
Chris Cornell
Mariah Carey
Freddie Mercury
Mikael Akerfeldt
Mike Patton
Ronnie James Dio
Fuck it, 10 places are clearly not enough. It's impossible to me to reply to this thread without mentioning
Robert Plant
Myles Kennedy
Anneke van Giersbergen
Björn Strid
Maynard James Keenan
Russell Allen
Lianne La Havas
Daniel Gildenlow
Rob Halford
Whitney Houston
Saint Saviour
James Hetfield
-
Good to see Lee Douglas getting mentioned. Her dynamic with Vincent is really quite special.
-
Christina Aguilera
Phil Anselmo
Mariah Carey
Brad Delp
Lzzy Hale
James Hetfield
James LaBrie
Amy Lee
Freddie Mercury
Brent Smith
I forgot Brad Delp on mine. And Ben Orr from the Cars; WOEFULLY underrated as a singer.
-

Severely underrated artist, though I can see why (She hasn't done much solo projects and isn't even the main singer of Anathema) but still... Her voice is absolutely unique. Really shows how you don't necessarily need a huge vocal range to stand out in a song.
-
In no particular order:
Rik Emmett
Ged
Paul Rodgers
Mariusz Duda
David Gilmour
Sir Paul
Tommy Shaw
Mike Patton
Steve Perry
Chris Cornell

Lzzy Hale

Brad Delp is probably my favorite male singer of all time.

Russ Parrish
Rob Zombie

Who's Russ? I googled "singer named russ," and this was the first result: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russ_(rapper)
There are a lot of "Robs" and at least two "Bruces" who could be obvious.
I'm guessing "Ronny" was meant to be "Ronnie," as in Dio (otherwise, Ronny Milsap would probably be the obvious one).
And "Babs"?
-
I suspect he meant Allen, Halford, Wilson, Dickinson, Dio, and Presley.
-
Glenn Hughes
Tarja Turunen
Tomi Joutsen
Jorn
Dio
John West
Michael Stanne
Ann Wilson
Rob Halford
Rob Dickinson
-
I suspect he meant Allen, Halford, Wilson, Dickinson, Dio, and Presley.
The problem is, not all of those are "obvious". Russell Allen isn't on my top 50 vocalist lists.
-
But he is for a lot of DT fans. Is there a vocalist that's more obvious in any of those slots?
-

Well, that's just it; obvious for who? For me "Russ" alone would be Russ Ballard, from Argent, and who wrote like six songs for my favorite artists (Kiss, Ace Frehley and Rainbow have all done songs by him).
-
1. Freddie Mercury
NO ONE ELSE MATTERS!
-

I suppose if you're primarily a classic rock fan it might be less obvious. But Symphony X is an objectively closer artist in style to DT than Argent is, and Russ has not only toured and performed with DT, but was in a band with Portnoy, so there are pretty strong connections.

Rob Dickinson
Brother of Bruce?

Joe Lynn Turner

Nephew Cousin, I think.

I heard he sounds a lot like Bruce Halford.
-

I hear ya. I could probably go 100 deep into a favorite singers list before getting to Allen, and even then not sure he'd made the next 100. He is not in any band that I actively listen to, ever.
-
1. Stu Block (Iced Earth, Into Eternity)
2. Maynard James Keenan (Tool, A Perfect Circle)
3. Sammy Hagar (Van Halen)
4. Lizzy Hale (Halestorm)
5.Ronnie James Dio (Dio, Black Sabbath, Rainbow)
6. Brian Johnson (AC/DC)
7. Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave)
8. Bruce Dickenson (Iron Maiden)
9. Blaze Bailey (Iron Maiden, Blaze Bailey)
10. James Labrie (Dream Theater)
And yes, Blaze is on my list. He was not the best fit for Maiden, but man can that guy sing. Also, his live version of Clansman he did a few years back is my fav version of that song. Killer vocalist.
-
Rob Dickinson
Brother of Bruce?
NephewCousin, I think.
I heard he sounds a lot like Bruce Halford.
Singer, guitarist and songwriter, cousin of Bruce who was the frontman for cult indie rockers Catherine Wheel.
Not in the music business now for a few years.

Sounds nothing like...
