Title: What Do You Miss Most About Your Childhood
Post by: Prog Snob on May 26, 2016, 05:37:44 AM
I have some deep questions again, so this is the first one.

What do you miss the most about your childhood?

The freedom from responsibility. Other than keeping my room clean and doing my homework, I basically had no responsibilities at all. Now with a wife, 3 kids, career, etc, I sometimes feel smothered by responsibilities.

The fact that my biggest concern in life was whether or not I was going to be able to watch Legends of the Hidden Temple at 6:30 every night.

The freedom from responsibility.
That, for sure.

Also, recess, nap time, and Saturday morning cartoons.

Like most have said, the innocence of youth.  Carefree no worries about life in general.

Now the fun thing I miss is having 3 months off from school.  Imagine having 3 months off from work?

Coming home from school at 3-ish, and going outside and just experiencing nature for the four to six hours until dark.  Walking through the woods, swimming in the lake behind my house, riding bikes on the old abandoned rail lines...  I watched my fair share of TV, don't get me wrong, but there was a period every single day (especially during the summer) where we were out in the woods.

The lake had two beaches (one on each side) and houses along the shore for about half of it, and the other half was undeveloped woodsy area.   Most of the woodsy area was swamp (when they later cleared it, they found nests of rattlesnakes!!!  We never saw them when we were traipsing around, though we stayed clear of that area because of the swampiness) but there was one lot that was unbuilt, in between the main beach and the line of houses along one side.  There was a little grassy knoll, where I could go and lay down in the sun on the grass, but no one - litereally no one - could see me, unless they were in a boat immediately in front of me on the water.  And I would bring a book and my AM radio and lay there in my old world.   The lot was developed and a house is there now, but I will always remember that space.  (This is why "The Analog Kid" is one of my favorite songs ever; that lyric captures that place and time as if Neil was sitting there with me.).

The innocence, the lack of knowledge and understanding. Ignorance is bliss and back in the day, I didn't have a care in the world. I didn't realize how cruel the world truly can be. The realities of life that one can not escape.

I miss laying back on the grass at night, gazing up at the stars and feeling like anything was possible.

I also miss early 90's hip hop.

I miss Snick and watching nickelodeon in the early 90's.

I miss getting lost in the woods and riding bmx bikes. I miss actually enjoying going to the beach.

I miss the time before cell phones and constant and total connection. I miss the simplicity of how it used to be.

I miss being happy

I posted a while back that the thing I missed most was that the only thing that mattered was the record I was listening to.

I my that time when I was becoming musically aware, when the passion really grabbed me.

I miss my maternal grandparents.

I miss going outside on a hot summer day. We grew up on the ocean and the ocean breeze would come through the window.

I miss the baseball game of the week on Saturday afternoons. It was the only time I could see NL teams.

I don't think anyone's actually articulated it this way, but the total living in the NOW.   On my street, I lived at the bottom of a hill, and there were about six or seven houses going up until the road sort of turned to the right and leveled off a little (but still went up).   There was a stone wall that ran parallel to the road, and about 5 to 10 feet from the curb (it varied).   There were a few trees in this strip as well.   We would sled ride, and we would come down from about three houses up into the "flatter area", then down the steep part to my house, and at my house we'd have to execute a sharp left turn into my side yard, then down through my back yard.   If we missed to the left, we hit the stone wall, missed to the right we were out in the street, and missed the bottom turn and you hit another stone wall.

I can remember waxing up my sled, and at about 12 or 14 years old, bringing pails of water out to ice down this strip so we could go faster.  I can tell you I would shit myself now at the idea of doing that, but then?  Bring it on, pussies! Let's ride sleds!!!

Just the innocence and not really having to care about anything but yourself.

Granted, I do everything I can to still live like a kid in a grown ups body.

I also really miss gym class in school, getting to play organized activities everyday is really fun and something that I don't get to experience anymore.

Not me. Being that I was a tall, lanky, uncoordinated late bloomer, gym class was the bane of my existence in junior high. Couldn't have been done with gym fast enough. Haha

As for what I miss, aside from the responsibility aspects many have mentioned:
Summer vacation - three months off from work every summer as an adult would be amazing. So ready for tomorrow to be over and the long weekend to start.

The thrill of new music discovery - I still get this every now and again, but nowhere to the same extent, and not as often. I used to obsess and delve into new albums that clicked with me. Vapor Trails and SFAM didn't leave my car player for months after their release. I don't get that excited over new music like that any more, but I still keep trying.

Functioning on four hours of sleep - In my mid thirties, I'm ready to hit the sack at 930 or 1000. Used to be able to stay up till 200 am playing guitar or video games and go to work at 730 the next day. I'd be useless if I tried that now...

The Lego US headquarters is about 5 miles from where I live, and my father-in-law just celebrated 30 years there late last year.   Like a kid in a candy store...

(There's a LEGO store where employees get discounts, but there is also a "special" room where only employees can go to get special stuff; sort of like the "as-is" room at IKEA).

I miss all of the days playing baseball in the streets

This is a simple, yet great answer.

As kids, we were always playing street hockey, wiffle ball, soccer or tackle the man with the football (a classic!).

Street hockey was often a contest to see how many times we had to move the nets out of the street for a car. :lol :lol

That's all my youth was about...baseball.  I read every book I could get my hands on, knew every last statistic and record, and loved watching every game.

I never played hockey. It was either baseball (or some form of it) or football.

So many forms of baseball - wiffle ball, stick ball, or just good old baseball.  And I was a big baseball card collector in my youth.  In fact, I recently dug up by many baseball cards I still had saved and gave them to my 11-year old nephew, who loves baseball.  He was thrilled. :coolio

I for one loved Kotow's original reply. It cracked me up.

I suppose I miss the lack of responsibility, but with that came a lack of freedom. We tend to romanticize childhood, but it also sucks in its own ways. People are telling you what to do all the time, you are basically stuck in the same place 24-7, you have no money for beer and gourmet cheese, and you worry about stupid shit that doesn't matter at all.

I do miss having summers off and spending all day at the library. Yeahhh.

Spending about two weeks every Summer at my Grandparents house in the country with two cousins of mine.  The Grandparents would let us do stuff (within reason, of course) that our parents would never let us do in a thousand years.  We'd be there over 4th of July and my Grandfather would get tons of fireworks and he let the three of us shoot them off on the 4th.  That was a blast (no pun intended).

Also, Christmas at my Grandparents when I was a kid was a magical time.  Since I'm now grown up and my Grandparents are dead, Christmas sucks.  It's not what it was.

The ability to truly live in the present. To be able to play games with friends and get so caught up in it, nothing else mattered. I can still somewhat do that, and meditating certainly helps but it's nowhere near as easy as it used to be.

An adult imagination, man, it's just not as wacky as a child's imagination.

These days somewhere on my body always hurts.

I miss when that wasn't a thing.

I can piggy back on that. I certainly miss being able to do anything without wondering if it will cause an ache or a pain here or there.  I am probably in better shape than the vast majority of 42-year old men out there, but the aches and pains get more frequent as we get older. :censored

The fact that my biggest concern in life was whether or not I was going to be able to watch Legends of the Hidden Temple at 6:30 every night.
That show was awesome! I always would jump when those guys would jump out and grab the contestant and I always felt that if I was in their shoes, I would crap my pants. It was always so tense to me as a kid.

They still show reruns sometimes on one of Nickelodeon's 90s channels. And I just googled it, apparently they are gonna make a TV Movie based on the show with Kirk Fogg making an appearance and Olmec, obviously.

That's what I miss from childhood. 90s Nickelodeon. We had our shows and it was something that I will always remember. I for some odd reason always recall coloring and watching Hey! Arnold.

The lack of responsibilities. No job. No bills. No money. No having to 'manage my time' (though I do a shit job of it, generally). No worrying about the future.

The optimism. I could do anything, be anything. Being a cynical, pessimistic arsehole may be more practical, but it sure as hell ain't as fun.

The friends. Many have moved away and I no longer see them anymore.

Agree with Adami: Late 80's and early 90's culture. Largely pop-culture really. The cartoons, the movies, the TV shows, and the absolutely ridiculous fashions. Most of it is still around in some fashion or another, but there was something about being in the moment with it, being there when it was big, when it was everywhere.

Not childhood, but more post-adolescence/early adulthood, but college. I loved college. I only went to a community college so this isn't nostalgia for dorm/party life, but just college and that time in my life. I loved just learning stuff. I loved how free I was to do almost anything I wanted (I had some money from my jobs, a car, and time), but I wasn't yet burdened by all the responsibilities of adulthood. I could hang out with friends every weekend until 4 in the morning, making midnight runs to Taco Bell, and playing Smash Brothers and Dungeons and Dragons until we could longer function. Many of my friends hadn't moved yet or gotten married and had kids so there was always somebody around to do something. See a movie, play some video games, or just something.

Yeah, I was walking through a mall the other day, and I spotted a few kids, about age 7 or so, just randomly sprinting off at full speed, then stopping without blinking an eye or breathing a bit. I thought to myself, even after a year plus of no smokes, I'd still collapse dead if I sprinted the same way. :lol
