Yes. DTF's biggest F&J fan here. It's the album I've been waiting for them to release for ages. Easily the best thing since When The Storm Comes Down. Jason Bittner is insane on this.
-
These guys are awesome! Their last few albums have been excellent., the Cold was awesome!
-
Bravewords has a very favorable review
https://bravewords.com/reviews/flotsam-and-jetsam-flotsam-and-jetsam
This album is excellent.
YtseJam, I'm not a fan of The Cold, or the whole Neilson/Simpson era. They rocked pretty hard, but there was something missing.
I was thrilled to see Michael Gilbert and Kelly Smith return for Ugly Noise, reuiniting 4/5 of the original band, but I was fairly disappointed with it, although it's grown on me.
To me, the new s/t is easily the best think since 1997's High, which effective ended the 6 album run of the Classic Era.
-
I think Simpson was awesome! He kept the musicianship at a higher level and more groove. I love these guys and AK's voice!

Hey that's cool. Any love that F&J gets around here is good love.
Both No Place For Disgrace and When The Storm Comes Down made The TAC Top 50. The new album really reminds me of them, particularly No Place.
-
:metal Did you see them when they came around last year? Not sure where you're from
-
Unfortunately, my days of going to clubs to see heavy metal bands are pretty much behind me.
I'm a half hour south of Boston.
I saw F&J at least a half dozen times from '87-'95 in both Providence and Boston.
If you're interested, I'll try and find some pics. I know I have them from at least 3 shows.
-
Definitely! I saw them at the El n Gee in New London and at Toads place. Troy Gregory Era and then Jason Ward

Oh shit.. You're a fogey too! And local! Troy Gregory was awesome. They were never the same after he left, IMO. The new album comes the closest to that era.

I have Photobucket open, and apparently I have a couple of pics scanned in. I know I have ton more but here's a couple.

This was the Doomsday tour with Michael Spencer on bass. What was cool about this show was that they were opening for Celtic Frost, but for some reason Celtic Frost didn't play. So we got extra Flots!!
I have never seen anyone headbang like Michael Gilbert.
-
I might have to check the new album out if it is that good. I won't bother re-posting what I have said many times in the past, but my interest in the band was very limited. I saw them for the first time touring in support of the Drift album. I went and bought that album and LOVED it. Easily my favorite from them. I bought a few others through the years and never really cared for them much. Didn't dislike them, but they just didn't hold my interest. But I thought their live album, Once in a Deathtime, was really good too.
-
Tim, when you get a chance can you give a ranking of your top albums from F&J
-
I saw them for the last time in support of Drift, which at the time I thought was very weak. It's aged well though. It was the 5th of what I consider the first 6 albums as the Classic Era.
After 1997's High, the drummer, Kelly Smith, and guitarist Michael Gilbert (the guy in the Snoopy shirt) left and were replaced Craig Neilson and Mark Simpson. They released a number of albums, Unnatural Selection, My God, Dreams Of Death, and The Cold. Personally, none of these has really hit me like the Classic era. Smith and Gilbert returned for 2013's Ugly Noise, so even though it was a return of the Classic Lineup, the album was very slow to click.
But the new one kicks total ass. It is reminiscent of No Place For Disgrace, which is quite different from Drift. Songs are very fast and aggressive.
-
I'm definitely going to check this out but I'm more excited for the new Death Angel. Criminally underrated band.
-
Tim, when you get a chance can you give a ranking of your top albums from F&J
No Place For Disgrace
When The Storm Comes Down
Cuatro
High
Doomsday For The Deceiver
Drift
Unnatural Selection
My God
Ugly Noise
The Cold
For some reason I never got Dreams Of Death, the third of the Simpson/Neilson era.
I'd say the new one would land about 5th. Doomsday and No Place are the thrashiest and the new one is quite like them.
-
I'm definitely going to check this out but I'm more excited for the new Death Angel. Criminally underrated band.
I played them on my radio show a lot in college, but it was really the vocals that held me back on them. They had a great version of Cold Gin if I'm not mistaken.
I would not behoove anyone loving Death Angel.

Yep...killer version of Cold Gin. Since the 2004 come back, each release has been better and better. I thought Act III was their peak but I'm glad to have been proven wrong.

I think No Place for Disgrace is an absolute masterpiece and a must have for anyone in their metal collection. Doomsday is a classic much like kill em all was. Drift is an excellent transition from Cuatro where they broke their stereotypical sound and Cuatro has a special 90's vibe. Here are some of my favorites for anyone who wants to hear excellent music with a singer who can sing check out some of these as they've evolved. BTW great pix!:

You know, I can't say I go out of my way to listen to this album. But here's the thing: I do listen to the new Fates Warning quite a bit, and F&J is up next after them on my phone and my work computer, so it often comes on if I don't actively skip to something else when the FW album finishes. And I really enjoy it (or at least the first few songs in the cases where I end up changing it halfway through) every time. The first 4 songs get my head bobbing and feet tappin'. And I notice that, despite not listening to it all that much, it's so straightforward and catchy that I know the songs on the first half very well and am constantly either mouthing the lyrics and/or air guitaring the solos (when nobody is walking by my office, of course).
EDIT: And added this thread to the A-Z index of band threads thread. Not sure why there wasn't an F&J thread in there.
-
It's a great album, Top 3 for me this year. But It's a also great Flotsam album. They haven't had an album this good and consistent in a looooong time.
And Jason Bittner nails it on this album. He has a similar style to Kelly Smith, so it has a classic feel, but Bittner is much stronger.
Life Is A Mess :metal

Act III is one of my favourite ever albums. Pretty much perfect from start to finish. Rather eclectic but remembers its thrash heritage with a couple of blistering songs. And then you have Stagnant and Room with a View... brilliant.
Nice to hear someone else likes When the Storm Comes Down, by the way! I loved it on release and still love it today, despite the 'interesting' snare sound.

WTSCD is one of the ultimate "air drumming" albums!

Just listening to the s/t. As is often the case, I hadn't been thinking about this album in awhile, and it just came on after Fates Warning. Diggin' it. :metal TAC, you still listening to this one?

It's in the van! :metal
Haven't played it in a couple of months. I've gone through a UFO and now a Maiden binge, so that takes a lot of time.
But yes, it's awesome!!

Did you guys hear Jason Bitner joined Overkill? :xbones

Did you guys hear Jason Bitner joined Overkill? :xbones
Oh really?? Is he in both bands now? He was fantastic on the last F&J.
-
Yeah he was. Originally I think he was going to be in both but now it appears he has left F&J for Overkill. I happen to love both bands so I'm not totally disappointed.
-
I think Overkill is a bit more financially stable, but I'm an F&J guy. Overkill is OK.
-
I'm more of a fan of their classics. The Years of Decay is the best :metal
-
I honestly didn't pay any attention to them back in the day. I'm not very familiar with their back catalog. I've got their last 3 or 4 albums, but not the latest. I sampled a few tracks and decided not to shell out any cash for it.
I saw them open for Slayer in 1990.
-
Ohh man definitely worth checking out..

I just saw that. Interesting, because he had injured his shoulder and was unable to play with Fifth Angel in April. I assume whatever treatment he got helped immensely for him to be taking on a thrash tour. Good for him!
-
That IS interesting.
I realize it's about 10 shows, but how can you be so injured to play FA, but only 3 months later expect to play F&J?
-
I saw that too but I don't know anything about him. Sounds like he's just filling in
-
All I know about this band is that Jason Newsted was in it. What should I check out?
Also was Jason an influence to the band's sound or just a passing member?
-

Jason was one of THE founding members. After they released their first album in '86, Doomsday For The Deceiver, he joined Metallica.
They have been releasing albums ever since.
Doomsday is old school 80's thrash. It sounds a bit dated.
Personally, the two albums they released next are two of my favorite albums of all time.
No Place For Disgrace (1988)
When The Storm Comes Down (1990)
The s/t they released a year or two ago is excellent.
-
I've been listening to Flotsam and Jetsam a lot over the past few months and concluded that few bands have been this inconsistent. Some albums sound like they were recorded in a garage with minimal effort and not a single standout track, and others are unbelievably awesome. In my opinion, Cuatro (1992) and The Cold (2010) are easily their finest achievements, and I'll continue listening to everything they put out in hopes that a new one can impress me as much.
-
Cuatro has certainly aged well. I thought it was a huge step down from When The Storm Comes Down at the time.
I have trouble getting into The Cold.
-
When I was a kid, I fell in love with "Wading Through the Darkness" because of Headbangers Ball. I ended up buying Cuatro and Drift, but for some reason only listened to them a couple times. I'm glad I finally decided to give them another chance! The Cold surprised the hell out of me because their previous few albums had been so underwhelming. Right from the start--with eerie keys and Eric A.K forlornly singing "You tell me I'm the devil and then scratch my flesh with your horns"--it sounded like this band had finally woken up and had something to prove again. It's a really dark and ferocious album but it's also probably their most melodic because of "The Cold," "Secret Life," "Blackened Eyes Staring," and especially that amazing ballad "Better Off Dead."
-
Interesting. The Cold was never even on my radar. I'm going to have to check it out. But I agree about the "inconsistency" comment. They are a very hit-and-miss band for me.
-
The Cold is freaking amazing. :hefdaddy
-
I have been sampling it on YouTube while at work. Thus far (track 6): THIS IS AMAZING!
-
Enjoying my first ever run through the self titled album.
Monkey Wrench :omg: :metal :metal :metal :omg:
-
Yeah Gregg, that last album they did was fantastic.
-
I agree, Tim. Definitely purchase worthy.
So now I'm really curious about what I've been missing, thus, I'm listening to The Cold. I'm nearly through it and really enjoying the experience. There are a few songs that I'm not as keen on as I was with the self titled album, but I still love a few of the tunes.
Here's a couple of impressions I have about the band and their sound overall (so far). Number one: the aggression doesn't feel forced, which I find really uncommon in metal bands of a certain age. I'm not getting the "menopause metal" impression I usually get from such acts (I'm looking at you Adrenaline Mob). Maybe the down to earth, common man, lyrics really help, but I chalk it up to my second impression: the vocals are excellent! Their singer really sells these songs and the anger, regret, frustration, despair, hopelessness, of the lyrics with his effortless delivery.
Would listen again.

That is what first attracted me to the band in the Drift era. Spot on observation.

When The Cold came out, I just could not really get into it. But I just spun it while cleaning my pool, and damn, some good stuff I overlooked. This album has some great guitar solos, something that F&J is not really known for.
Gregg, you mention the lyrics and the singer. I was thinking about something Grappler said in the Crue thread, about how honest he found the Crue in the 80's. That was exactly what I was thinking about Eric Knutson. That guy's the real deal. There is no pretentiousness about him whatsoever.
I've been a F&J fan since they have been around. I saw them on their first tour, unfortunately it was just after Jason Newsted left.
Greeg, did you know Eric Knutson's son was on American Idol?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dxEysNzEDo
He looks just like him. I'm trying to find a video with Eric in it. I do remember there being one where he was there. My understanding is that he did not grow up with Eric, and may not have even had contact with him. That's what I remember.
-
Flotsam and Jetsam are absolutely amazing! Eric AK sings his balls off and their music is so powerful that if they don't energize your batteries you're probably already dead. Their last album was sick! This was our bands main influence and I was happy to hear them getting air play on sirius at least.
-
Amen, Brother.
I'm going to spend some time with the Simpson/Neilson era over the next few days. Spun The Cold earlier. Have Unnatural Selection on right now. :metal :metal

@ Ytsejam..found this footage from Toads on YouTube. Saw this tour in Providence.

F&J released their latest album last week.

This album is incredible.

Hopefully the music is better than the cover art ;D
-
It's better than the first draft:

-
I like the draft better actually - always had a soft spot for the Stay Puft marshmallow man.
-
The world's most overrated movie.
-
Man these guys just get better with age! I think the album artwork looks cool, better than DT's last few and upcoming anyway. Nevertheless, F&J rule. Eric AK is so awesome :metal
-
Man, I love these guys. Just saw this clip on FB and made me realize how lucky we are to have bands like this still

They have something going on at Sonic Perspectives on Friday?
-
So I've been listening to my promo copy of the new Flotsam. HOLY SHIT, what an incredible record. I'm a casual fan of Flotsam. I know a bit of the old stuff, and then paid attention when one of my favorite drummers, Ken Mary joined. Well, Blood in the Water builds on the last album in a HUGE way.
Thrash, technical, powerful, melodic. INCREDIBLE album. DO NOT hesitate to buy it when it is released. Just intensity from start to finish. whenever we get back to concerts, Flotsam is on the list for me. I meant to go on the last tour (they played a tiny club near me), but had a conflict. I won't miss them the next time.
-
I'm on it as soon as it's released!
-
Been starting to dig into this band. Spun the End of Chaos twice and it's a ball cruncher, love it! I've checked on Tim's suggestion to No Place for Disgrace and am now checking the re-recorded version, which is cool. Some amazing riffing on here actually, really good. I think I'll work backwards and maybe go the self titled next.
Damn, they have a lot of albums.

I actually listened to the self titled today. That's a great album.

Chris Poland on Misguided Fortune??

And The Jones. Yep, that's him for sure, nice.
-
Does Chris Poland guest on the No Place re-record? I didn't know that.
-
Does Chris Poland guest on the No Place re-record? I didn't know that.
It's unmistakably him on those two tracks. I'm just going by ear but I'd have to look it up to confirm. Tone, style, phrasing, gotta be him.
-
I don't have it, and honestly, I've never heard it. The original No Place is an iconic album for me and it's perfect the way it is.
You must have an amazing ear. I wouldn't know a Chis Poland style if he plugged in his amp in my living room.
-
I really could do without the Elton John cover. WTF is up with that?
-
yeah, it was an odd choice.
-
Halfway through the self titled and this is a good one too. A bit more variety and an old school feel to Chaos, which is nice and it's some stomping metal.
-
The s/t has a lot more of an old school feel. A song like Life Is A Mess has a classic feel. Plus Jason Bittner's drumming is quite reminiscent of Kelly Smith's.

I thought you'd like the title. ;D
It's an interesting song musically, but it's a bit different than the rest of the album it's on. That album is METAL!
It's from 1999's Unnatural Selection. It's the first album after they switched two original members, with Mark Simpson replacing guitarist Michael Gilbert, and Craig Neilsen replacing drummer Kelly Smith.

Yeah, that's Troy Gregory, who played on No Place and When The Storm Comes Down. He was great live, but those two albums stand out on top for me. I loved his influence.
-
I'll get onto US then next.
-
This new record smokes! I never really dug the last one for some reason, but the new one has a lot of aggression in the riffs, which I love!

This album...

..is FUCKING AMAZING!
-
Can't wait to check it out. Hoping there's a chance I'll be able to grab a copy instore, but I think that's a pipe dream.
-
I'm waiting for my Father's Day Amazon card, so it'll be a couple of weeks before I have my own copy.
This is a great album though.
-
Bah, why would I think this would be available in store. :lol
-
Yeah, streaming this one now, it's a cracker. Similar to the last one but just excellent. The Walls is fucking beyond amazing.
-
The Walls is so damn catchy. That should’ve been a single.
-

It's out of the same mould as Recover from the last album. Fucking love that one too.
-
Had a couple of more listens to Blood In The Water over the past couple of days. This album is amazing. One song I've been really digging, buried in the back half of the album, is Reagression. That tune rips.
And holy shit, Ken Mary! :hefdaddy
-
So I have a confession to make and i'm not joking here, i've heard the name Flotsam and Jetsam before but for some reason always assumed (i'm being real) it was a country/folk band or something like that. I recently saw Ken Mary playing a cover and new nothing about him and did some googling and found out he played in this band. "Oh cool, versatile drummer" I thought, had a search.... thrash metal :omg: :lol
Maybe i've mixed them with some other group?

I never thought they were country but I only started checking them out about a month ago. I didn't think they were thrash, but I don't know what I thought they were.
-
Troy Gregory was sick and it's too bad things didn't work out with him.
Unnatural Selection and High are their two worst albums. Everything else is gold! I just got the new CD and will pop it's cherry today! :metal

Cool interview with Ken Mary. He seems like a great dude.

F&J's first album, Doomsday For The Deceiver, was released 35 years ago today! :metal
Gonna have to spin it today.
-
Good idea! I remember in high school my girlfriend would say I was the desecrator when that song would play. I used to let her drive my truck if she'd do it topless and she had big ones. So picture a chevy truck with bouncing boobs blasting Flotsam coming at ya! :metal
-
:lol
WOW!
Can't wait to hear your Hammerhead story. :lol
-
I purchased a cheap mp3 copy of this for the car. Pumping it on the way to work this morning and holy shit, this album is fucking incredible. I thought it was solid when I first streamed it but this fucking rips! Gotta get a copy on CD. You can't help but to feel more manly listening to this shit. Some barnstorming riffing going on here. fucking powerful!
-

Definitely. This is a great album.

I'm very selective lately about what cd's I buy now but I ordered Blood in the Water, this album is blistering. Ordered a copy of End of Chaos as that was in stock too.
-
That’s money we’ll spent. The s/t before The End Of Chaos is great as well. They’ve been on quite a run.

Love the Cactus guy intro.

They actually sounded great even though they looked like my sister. There must have been 10 people and 1 cactus there. :metal

Eric sounds amazing here, and all round a ripper performance from all really.
The cactus thing was classic and the crowd of 10 people was fucking hilarious.

Got my cd's of the last two albums and been spinning them the last couple of days. These guys are fucking amazing. 2 incredible balls out metal records. So underrated.
The new one will easily be top 3 of the year for me.

Flots' set at Hellfest Saturday.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpP6MnGTc7o
Great set.
I just sat and watched the whole thing. WOW!!
Apparently their drummer Ken Mary had a passport issue and can't do the Euro tour. The drummer here is Marco Prij from Cryptosis. The kid is only 26. Learned the set in a week.
Mary's passport issue was that to go to Europe, you must have at least 90 days left on your passport expiration, but he only had 72, and seems to have been stopped at the airport. Yikes...and the band still pulled this off. Amazing band.
And holy shit, I'd swear that was Melphina on bass.

Neat!
Oh, and speaking of Cryptosis...their 2021 album, Bionic Swarm, is great!

Listening now. Wow, I like it. Was expecting the worst for the vocals but these are fine. Old school thrashy.
