Title: mikemangioy's Roulette II: An Unexpected Tourney (WE HAVE A WINNER, LADS!)
Post by: mikemangioy on May 12, 2016, 07:01:09 AM
Less then a year after my first roulette, here I am again!
It's earlier than I've predicted. Lots of people actually passed their turn to host roulettes, so it's my turn again now, and it was a really pleasant surprise!

After ignoring the horrible pun in the title, let me just say thanks once again, to all those who have participated in last year's roulette. Some pretty big discoveries were made because of you and most of all, I had a lot of fun. But let's come straight to the point here.

New year, new roulette, new rules.

Last time I opted for 8 rounds, with 8 contestants. This year, I've decided to step things up a bit, so we'll have:

THE TEN ELEVEN CONTESTANTS

1. Sacul
2. Train Of Naught
3. splent
4. Elite
5. Tomislav95
6. Scorpion
7. Parama
8. twosuitsluke
9. stadler
10. Tyrias
11. Evermind (surprise last participant)

These guys will fight for
THE TEN ROUNDS

ROUND 1: Openers
ROUND 2: Open round
ROUND 3: Joyous round
ROUND 4: Open round
ROUND 5: Instrumentals
ROUND 6: Open round
ROUND 7: Dark round
ROUND 8: Open round

6 contestants get eliminated at this point.

ROUND 9: Last round (Unique/Epic round)

As you can see I went for really simple rounds themes, because I like to keep it simple in this sense, and more honest (I just want new songs, dammit.). The next roulettes might get more complicated, though.

From this moment you can send for ROUND 9 - THE LAST ROUND

-------------------------------------------------------------
To have a general idea of my tastes I suggest you to have a look at:

My most recent top 50 albums list (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=43527.msg1942787#msg1942787)

I've been in a lot of roulettes lately, and besides, you didn't play in my v2, so out of cat pictures and power metal you get only cat pictures.

Hey, that's pretty smart. Double the songs, double the chances of winning (but you'd songblock yourself).

I still didn't send anything because I don't know to play safe or not. I'd rather risk but I'm pussy :sadpanda:

Let's hope that I can do better than the last time - though if the first couple rounds go meh I might just take the Shadow Ninja approach - saying fuck it and just sending something that I happen to be digging myself.

We'll see.

If this doesn't get me points then I really don't know what will. Everything is crossed I don't bomb out again  :lol

Well, no way to drop out until round 8 here, so you'll have to fuck up more than once :lol

Good point, this could get interesting *painful* for all involved.

Mikemangioy, do you still listen to a lot of straight forward metal? I mean, I've moved towards progressive metal because with a lot of new metal I hear nowadays I feel I've heard it all before. I do still get blown away by some metal bands but it doesn't happen as often as it used to.

Would you say you have gone the same way or can I get away with sending straight forward metal bands you may not have heard?

I have the same question with regards to Riverside: they are both on the partially banned list and on the list of "songs that I got in the last roulette", yet they aren't on the list of bands that you'd be open to hearing other songs from, so... what gives?

Heeereee areee some tidbits for ya.

Groovy and catchy. I really like this singer's voice. The middle part reminds me of Rush, which actually makes a lot of sense.

What the hell is going on  :rollin

This song is not too bad, but it's a bit too genre-standard and predictable.

This feels very huge, I'm really enjoying the vibe of it.

Really chilly and groovy. Could fit great in a movie or a videogame.

I'm surprised this isn't all over the radio.

Incredibly stunning. Love everything about this.

This makes me feel like it's 2000 all over again.

This would probably fit better in the context of the album.

I have a feeling that it could benefit a lot with another singer.

*snip*

Fine.

ROUND 1: OPENERS
THE RESULTS

Well, you've asked for them. Well, actually.. they were coming anyway. Here are the results for the very first round of the roulette.

Evermind
Vanden Plas - Vision 11even*In My Universe

While this song isn't something exceptionally new, it has grown on me on the last couple of listens. I like the way the song opens up, and damn, this singer is really wicked sounding. Works well with the sinister lyrics. Overall, an enjoyable song, maybe it drags a bit, but it's fairly good.
8/10

Train Of Naught
Xerath - I Hold Dominion

This song is one of the biggest sounding pieces of music ever sent to me in a roulette. The song starts with this cinematic intro, and it cuts to the band which progress in a slow, heavy and glorious march. The song moves along with the vocals, which (as Train wrote in his PM) are insanely Devin Townsend-ish. After this, a cool riff plays and the song kind of repeats itself. This song has a huge vibe, and I can say that I enjoy the hell out of it. It's badass, it makes you feel on top of a cliff while there's a furious battle raging on at its foot. My only complaint it's that it is kind of incosistent, the various parts don't flow really that well with one another, but I don't know, maybe it just requires more listens.
8.5/10

Tyrias
The Struts - Roll Up

This is a little fun tune. I didn't know these guys and it surprises me that this isn't all over the radio. The song is incredibly catchy, with typical glam rock lyrics. Now, Tyrias, you used the world 'pop punk', and I got terribly scared. Pop punk can be good, like all music, but at times it's really hard for me to enjoy it, especially because of the vocals. But to my surprise, I like this singer a lot (he reminds me of Freddie Mercury) and this doesn't sound that pop-punkish like you said. I've been having EVERYBODY WANTS EVERYBODY WANTS stuck in my head for a while now.  it's a fun and enjoyable song for what it is.
8.5/10

Tomislav95
The Sword - Acheron/Unearthing the Orb

This is an instrumental overture to The Sword's album "Warp Riders". Considering this is a concept album, I think this would work better in the context of the record. For what it is, it's an okay instrumental, I love the stoner sound production of it but sadly, that's it. The riff are somewhat heard before and it doesn't really go anywhere, so yeah.. kind of a let down.
6.5/10

Scorpion
Need - Lifeknot

Never heard about these guys before. This was kind of hard to figure out, but in the end it grew on me. At first it sounds like Rammstein, then it's Riverside, and then some Nu Metal band. Part of them make me feel like it's 2000 all over again  :lol
The song flows good though, and I really like the chorus. Overall, it's kind of a weird track, in the "bad" sense of the word. It sounds a bit confused with its ideas, but it's totally decent.
7.5/10

twosuitsluke
The Black Mages - The Skies Above

So, this is supposed to be a 'Final Fantasy' cover band, with songs from its soundtrack, and their original composer on keyboards. Now, the music is decent - some nice 80's power metal vibes. The things that ruin it for me are two:
- The flow: the song starts with a beautiful piano intro that gets abruptly interrupted by the main guitar riff, which is in a different tempo and time signature. It's a bit of a punch in the face. The song then, towards the end, slows down again, and while the transition there is better than the intro, it still feels somewhat awkward.
- The vocals: This guy is undecided whether to be Pavarotti or Jorn Lande. It's pretty bad. I think the song would benefit a lot with another singer.
5.5/10 (sorry to let you down, my friend  :-\)

splent
Angra - Spread Your Fire

I chose Angra within the artist that can be resent because Temple Of Hate, last time, was amazing. A fun, fast track that never let go throughout.
And so, resending this band was a good choice?
Eh.
You chose a particularly standard sounding song that, while good, doesn't bring that fun element that the other track had. Once again, not a bad track, but somewhat standard sounding and predictable.
7/10

Stadler
Genesis - Eleventh Earl Of Mar

I've explored a bit of Genesis' early work because, honestly, who the hell didn't? They are one of the absolute classics of music in general, really.
This song is the opener from the second album without Peter Gabriel, Wind And Wuthering.
One thing stands out here. Phil Collins. Such a tight groove and great vocals. I really enjoy it! The middle clean part reminds me of Rush, which makes a lot of sense. Also, there's a bass line that is fucking amazing! This song has quite the groove going. Also, it may be the best fitting 'opener' that got sent.
9/10

Parama
The Ocean - Mesopelagic: Into The Uncanny
Back when this album came out, I've seen it mentioned here and there, so one day I went on wikipedia to see what it was all about. Turns out, this is a concept album that takes place from the surface, to the lowest point in the ocean, and each song is darker than the one before. That, to me, is a great concept to have in an album. I've never got around to listen to it, but man, thank you for sending this. Now I will for sure.
This is an incredible song. It works well in everything it does. The vibe is amazing, and the chemistry in the band too. The song is dynamic, it constantly shifts, but in a very subtle way. It's incredibly coherent throughout, and I also like the vocals a lot. Also, the opener vibe is there. What more to say? It's stunning. I love everything about this. It's not perfect, but it's close.
9.5/10

Shining - Fisheye

Once again, I knew these guys, but I wasn't familiar with any of their material. I know they have saxophones inside big metal tunes, but that's about it. But I certainly didn't think they were this mad.
This song sounds literally like Rammstein on acid with english random lyrics. Or at least I think they're random.
With that said, I have an incredible time listening to this tune - it's completely batshit insane. The thing is, it doesn't quite fit the theme in my opinion, so I have to rate it a bit less than I would normally. But don't worry, it's still pretty high.
ONE THREE SEVEN FIVE

8/10

Sacul
Ed Harrison - Tachi

The current champion. I was curious of what you would send me, but in the end I kind of knew what to expect when I saw what you sent. A chill, trip-hop-ish instrumental song, that could fit well in a videogame and/or a movie. I like the vibe of this, although I'm not sure how it could work as an opener. I wouldn't get back to it, but it's a nice track overall, so yeah, a fair
7/10

So, that's it. First round has come and gone. The competition, though, has just started. Here is the chart:

Parama (9.5 points)
Stadler (9 points)
Train Of Naught, Tyrias (8.5 points)
Elite, Evermind (8 points)
Scorpion (7.5 points)
Sacul, Splent (7 points)
Tomislav95 (6.5 points)
twosuitsluke (5.5 points)
---
You can now send for round two, which is an open round. Send whatever.

First I thought it was ordered from least favorite to favorite and I was like :omg: but 8.5/10 is great! I'll take it. No shame losing to The Ocean either, that's one of the best songs of the album IMO but it's all quality.

I think you'll like Xerath, I would agree some parts feel kinda disjointed at the beginning, but I figured since you like BTBAM and Native Construct you'll learn to live with it at some point, and the other songs are much shorter for the most part and feel more coherent anyways. I just love the huge orchestral opening of this one and that moment the riff kicks in with that scream is :2metal:

I'll decide on my open round song in a bit, reading some of the complaints on the songs of this round I think I have something good planned.

Exactly this.

Now, I'll try to stray farther from convention for my next submission. Like I said, I'm not here to win.

Well that could have gone better  :lol I really wanted to send The Black Mages and that song fit the theme better than most of their songs. I knew it was a bit of a gamble regarding the vocals. Hope it hasn't put you off checking anything else out by them though as they released 3 albums and only about 4 tracks had vocals at all (one female, one all in Japanese, one with minimal vocals and TSA).

Must try harder. Liking the sound of the songs by Xerath and The Ocean. Will check out all the competition before sending round 2.

For what it's worth the Black Mages song I got in my roulette wasn't bad.. it was also an instrumental :lol vocals do seem to be the biggest complaint here so I'm getting kinda curious about those.

Xerath and The Ocean are both amazing, definitely do

6.5 is a decent score :lol I think I got 8.5 for same song in Parama's roulette (or Shadow Ninja's?) for opener so I thought why not try to send it again. Should've gone with other song I'll probably send in one of the future rounds anyway. Whatever...

Checked out all the competition now. As predicted I liked Xerath and The Ocean. Liked The Ocean more and can see why it won the round. As Mike said, I like the sound of the concept of the album and will be checking that out soon.

I quite liked the track by The Sword too. Heard them way back on one of the Guitar Hero games and liked them, they seem in the vein of bands like Wolfmother and Priestess. I'll get around to them one day, really like the cover art to the album too.

Listened to some Shining before and this song was anything but predictable, has me interested but may take a while to get around to it.

The rest was cool but nothing else I will necessarily check out, already have that Angra album and may get some more in the future.

I've honestly never had a problem with the vocals in The Skies Above. I'm one of those people whose ear generally focuses on the guitar and drums. If I'd sent The Black Mages in an open round I wouldn't have sent that song (maybe Dancing Mad instead but then that could be considered a bit of a gamble too). Maybe I should have thought about it a bit more  :loser:

Also, Mike didn't like the transition between the piano into and the guitar kicking in, I love that bit. I love the pause and am anticipating the moment I can air guitar along  :lol

TIDBITS

When it comes to ballads, this is the style that I like. Really quiet and passionate.

I can't quite put my finger on what's going on here. This sounds like thrash and black metal had a baby who's high on steroids  :rollin

Really reminds me of the artist you've mentioned.

Love the sheer energy that this song brings to me.

Still haven't got into this one as much as the others.

Nice and catchy. Not what I'd expected from this band.

Beautiful melanchonic stuff. Really reminds me of Opeth.

I really like the vocals in this one, they make the song, if you ask me.

Good melody, but a bit redundant at the end of the day.

There are some good ideas here, it's taking a while, but I'm growing into it.

Never was a huge fan of this guy's voice, and since this is pretty melodic, we'll see how it goes.

All of these could be mine in theory, but I'm pretty certain it's the first one. The others just don't quite fit the song that well, and "quiet and passionate" is a perfect description of the song I sent.

Love the sheer energy that this song brings to me.

Still haven't got into this one as much as the others.

Nice and catchy. Not what I'd expected from this band.

Good melody, but a bit redundant at the end of the day.

There are some good ideas here, it's taking a while, but I'm growing into it.

Yeah.

TIDBITS

Love the sheer energy that this song brings to me.

Nice and catchy. Not what I'd expected from this band.

I really like the vocals in this one, they make the song, if you ask me.

I think these are the only ones that could be mine. I highly suspect that the one about the vocals is most likely to be mine.

Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Finally. Finally guys, some free time to write down these freaking results after nearly two weeks of wait. I'm incredibly sorry. This should be fine from now on. With that said, it's time for....

ROUND 2: OPEN ROUND I
THE RESULTS

This was overall an okay round. I liked the songs enough, but not even nearly as much as round 1. Let's see here:

Tyrias
Patrick Watson - Lighthouse

This is a very sweet ballad. I love the very subtle strumentation and low dynamics. I also enjoy the vocals, and the amazing reverb effect they have. It really wouldn't be the same without it. This song makes me picture a calm voyage through space and an enjoyable day of rain at the same time. It's very evocative. Then towards the end it explodes in a kind of march, and it's a nice pay off, of course, although I much prefer the first part of the song. When it comes to ballads, this is the style I like the most.
8/10

Train of Naught
Soilwork - The Ride Majestic

This song reminds me of a bunch of bands, namely Avenged Sevenfold and Trivium. You're lucky I'm not one of those guys who despises metalcore to the bone, but rather enjoy it, especially because it's very fun to listen to, even though it's not that original. And that's what I do with this song. I have a lot of fun. The chorus especially, is very catchy and just makes me want to headbang along, which means that the song works. Good stuff.
8/10

Tomsilav95
Vektor - Tetrastructural Minds

As you all guessed, yes, Vektor was sent in this round. And what can I say? It's a complete chaos of melodic guitars, screeching vocals and Tom Araya-esque high pitched screams. I mean, it's surely fun and amusing to listen to, but it doesn't have a lot of consistency, to me at least. But yeah, it's a blast nontheless, so it's not too bad.
7.5/10

splent
Yes - Machine Messiah

Yes are a dangerous entry for me. They are incredibly hit or miss for me. Either they write some of the most fun and eclectic songs, or they bore me. This.. was not one of the fun songs. I don't know what it is, but no matter how many times I try to listen to it, the song fails to grasp my attention. I guess it's bad luck.
5/10

twosuitsluke
The Dear Hunter - Waves

I constantly see TDH mentioned everywhere on Facebook and the internet in general, so when I saw you sent them I got pretty excited. I can't say I expected this, though. This reminds me a bit of Imagine Dragons, but really, overall, it's basically a mainstream pop rock song, and I thought this band was progressive rock  :justjen
Well. Well. This is a great song, though. I really like the vocal lines and the passion in them. The catchiness is there and I enjoy the lyrics too. I wish that the instrumentation was a bit more prominent, but the song is great enough with what it has.
8/10

Scorpion
Ihsahn - Celestial Violence

Damn. First of all, I know Ihsahn is pretty much a legend both for having taken part of Emperor and for basically creating Leprous. I never tried to get into him, I absolutely have no idea why, because this stuff is amazing. It's an incredibly intimate song, with vocals that remind me of Opeth. The chorus, though, is when all hell lets loose. These vocals, man.. they really hit me. Both the harsh and clean. This is an incredible song, with a great emotional impact. Impressed from the first listen.
8.5/10

Sacul
Kyuss - Odyssey

Hit. Recently I got into a little band called Royal Blood, which consists of a bassist and a drummer. The bass is incredibly fuzzy, so fuzzy it sounds almost like a guitar. I enjoy that sound. Of course, I'd enjoy this.
It's a badass song! The riffs are pounding, as the drums are - there's an incredible level of energy throughout this song, (even though not as much as I Hold Dominion last round :P) and you can feel the electricity, when you listen to it. Amazing!
8.5/10

Stadler
Marillion - White Russian

This nice groovy piece of music is next. I quite like this song, the vocals especially. There's a sheer aggression to them, I don't know what it is that make them so powerful. UZI'S ON A STREET CORNER is a great repeated line, and the 'where do we go from here' is equally as good. The rest of the track is okay I guess, but if you ask me, the vocals make this one.
7.5/10

Parama
Sòlstafir - Fjara
I would be okay with this song if it would've been less repetitive. I mean, it's the same melody over and over again. And while there are cases when that type of songwriting works (see Swans), this is not one of them. Yes, it's a pretty emotional track, and I love icelandic(?) lyrics but it's the repetitivity that ruins it for me.
6.5/10

Elite
Pain Of Salvation - Iter Impius

Resending an artist isn't shaping up to be good strategy.
I like this song less than I did last time with Used. I think that the vocals don't really do it for me. I like Daniel's voice well enough, but when used in the right context. He has this very expressive voice, but at times it seems kind of exaggerately emotional, as in this track. Since the vocals are basically in forefront throughout the piece, this has got me very small interest.. seems to be that PoS is not for me.
5.5/10

Evermind
Anciients - Raise The Sun

This is a really nice song. It took me a while to appreciate it, but it delivered. I guess that's because it resemples Opeth a lot, regarding structure, style and vocals too a bit. It could be a bit more original in that sense, but I think it delivers.
8/10

Stadler (16.5)
Train Of Naught (16.5)
Tyrias (16.5)
Parama (16)
Evermind (16)
Scorpion (16)
Sacul (15,5)

Elite (13.5)

Personally, my favourite thing about this song is the epic ending, starting from "racing the clouds home", and then there's that fantastic melody with "we place our faith in human rights". Uzi's on a street corner is probably my least favourite line from the whole album. :lol

I knew Scorpion sent Celestial Violence but damn, that's TDH gone aswell. I'm glad you liked both aswell as my song though :tup that's the whole purpose of roulettes and I consider it a win too if you liked those.

TDH was on my mind for next round though, so now I have an easier time picking my song, I know what I'll send and normally I wouldn't be super confident but I think it fits 'joyous' pretty much perfectly.

Sending NOW (sent)

The Parama Escape Plan

Second edit:

Just reading through other writeups now.  :metal for getting into Royal Blood as of lately, I have a bad feeling the second album will not live up to the debut judging from the new song but they are just amazing, you liking them gives me a new window of opportunity for this roulette. It's one of my favorite bands in the genre if not favorite, based on what we have from them now.

TDH are not really easy to define with just one label (pop-rock or progrock or w/e), you'll see, should probably start with Act IV, the album Waves is on.

Just curious, the themed round 'Unique', is that something you'll elaborate on more when the time comes or is this round just anyone's interpretation of unique music? Need to know this because I have an album/song I consider very unique, and I want to know if it would be a waste to hold on to it, especially because we can't even be sure whether we'll make it to that round.

I love happy/uplifting/joyous (whatever) rounds btw, I don't think I ever had to pick from so many different shit in a roulette but I stand by my choice. I'm going to have a hard time picking something that fits the dark round though :lol

I didn't comment about The Dear Hunter by the way. Yes, Waves is kind of a poppy song but it doesn't really represent them as a band. I played it safe with that song. I'd second what ToN said and get Act IV immediately. Waves works well as part of the album as a whole but if you listen to maybe A Night on the Town or Wait then they are very different sounding songs that show how varied their sound can be. I still haven't got around to listening to Acts I-IV consecutively with the lyrics yet but I'm 100% sure my love for the band will grow even more at this point, and I already love this band a LOT!!

Act II is better than Act IV though.

Act IV has a special place for me as it was the album that REALLY got me into this band. I just personally think it's way more consistent than Acts II and III (I also think it doesn't suffer from that dragging feeling that Acts II and III that have at points). I do enjoy every single one of their albums though.

TDH is one of the only 'big' bands that I miss, I think I'll have a listen to Act IV relatively shortly.

BTW yes, you'll get tidbits as usual, and from this round the blurred list. Stay tuned.

TDH is one of the only 'big' bands I have the guts sending in roulettes as of now, usually when people don't know the big bands it means they tried and weren't fond of them, but for The Dear Hunter no one really knows the range of their sound so it's always worth trying when you kinda know the hosts tastes.

Apart from Xerath it's probably the band I've gotten the best reception of in roulettes. Kind of makes me curious what a full ranking of bands sent in roulettes based on their average scores would look like, too bad it's virtually impossible considering all the different parameters come into play and the amount of time it'd take.

BTW yes, you'll get tidbits as usual, and from this round the blurred list. Stay tuned.

Yeah, the whole I-IV run would definitely be optimal, hope you'll have luck finding those others. If you like the more serious side of TDH aswell you're all set, you're in for a fun ride. And it's basically one big musical experience spread over 6 albums (Act V and VI are yet to be released though), huge concept albums are my favorite thing ever.

Not sure why this song exists, but it makes my day more interesting, I confess.

Quite a different entry from you, this time around. Love the choral vocals here, it's pretty fun.

Having recently read and watched The Great Gatsby, this fits incredibly well in the mindset of that story.

This song is quite good, but it's not the most fun I've ever gotten out of this particular genre.

This is probably the less creative song you've sent me. It's not even that happy so.. eh.

This is basically a cheesier version of Rush, and that's not a bad thing.

Quality entertainment. That's all there is to say about this one.

This sounds like a song straight out from a campfire or a musical. It's quite easygoing, if you know what I mean. Not that awesome, but still
enjoyable.

It's certainly not the best I've heard from this band, but it doesn't need to be. It does its job greatly. Reminds me of early Coldplay,
which is a good thing.

I like the groove in this song, and I think it would fit greatly in a movie. The chorus is catchy at it makes my head bob a lot. It's pretty infectious overall, also
because of the bassline.

I fucking love songs like these. You probably hit the soft spot for me right there. Insanely reminds me of a band from my country.

Looks like this is mine, and by the looks of the song placements Parama is taking the lead here, with Tyrias in second place? But it looks like I'll still be very much in the game with this score :metal

You spoilerous fuck

But WHERE IS THE BLURRY PIC MAN
Tbh, I thought the blurred list were the rankings I put after the tidbits. I haven't been following roulettes a lot lately so I'm wrong, I think.

But.

Here they are!

ROUND 3: JOYOUS ROUND
THE RESULTS

Damn, what a round. The reason why I like themed stuff like this is that I enjoy each different interpretation of the theme, and yeah, at times themed rounds are even more varied than open rounds. This was one of those cases, IMHO.

Tyrias
Caravan Palace - Suzy

Damn. If this doesn't make you happy, then I don't know what else. This is an incredibly fun electro-swing song. As soon as you told me the genre, I knew that I was in for some crazy piece of music. And I was not wrong. This manages to be extremely catchy and upbeating, but also captivating. I love the use of the bass synth united with tons of acoustic instruments. And the vocals, man.
Also, having recently read and watched The Great Gatsby, this fits incredibly well in the mindset of that story. Great, great sumbission.
9/10

Stadler
Asia - Open Your Eyes

This rather standar classic rock tune didn't exactly stand out in this round. It's something I've heard quite a lot before, and didn't really want something like this in this round. It's not even that happy so even more, this might be the song that didn't do a lot for me, compared to the other stuff you sent.
5/10

splent
Triumph - Magic Power

Now, this is another classic rock piece. But it does the job better. It's catchy, it's fun to listen to, puts a huge grin to my face. I don't know what it is, probably mainly the groove, but this song is pretty much the epitome of 'cheesy happy'. And I fucking adore cheese. You could define this as a cheesier version of Rush, the vocals really remind me a lot of Geddy Lee. The only letdown is that it's a bit repetitive, but eh, I can overlook that. It's a pretty nice song overall.
8/10

Tomislav95
Ensiferum - One More Magic Potion

I'll start with saying that the main riff is one of the coolest folk metal riffs I've ever heard. With that said, this song is cool enough. The vocals are a bit out of place in my opinion, but not that much. They don't distract me from the atmosphere at all, I just think that they would work better if done clean.
What to say about this? It's definitely a good folk metal song. I've heard much happier and more fun songs from this genre, though, I admit. But yeah, decent entry nonetheless.
7.5/10

Train Of Naught
Moron Police - Stomp That Goomba

Another case of 'love at first sight' , just like with Suzy. I mean, look at that title. Look at that friggin' title. It's such a fun song. It has cool riffs but also this crazy attitude, resembling Twelve Foot Ninja and System Of A Down, like you said, Train. It's great from start to finish, quality entertainment. Nothing else to say.
9/10

Sacul
Anathema - Dreaming Light

Sacul has sent this Anathema song. Anathema is a beautiful band that writes beautiful music. I know what of their albums and it's pretty much a trip through the clouds. This song stays of that idea. It's certainly not the best I've heard from this guys, but it does its job greatly: melodies, strings and piano intertwine in a gentle lullaby that soothes me a lot. Yes, this is like drinking a cup of hot milk before going to sleep. Also, it reminds me of early Coldplay, which is a good thing.
8/10

Parama
The Hirsch Effekt - Cotard

So. This song. This song is many things. First of all: incredible songwriting. It's pretty melodic and happy but can be fucking crazy and heavy, staying coherent throughout. It's an incredibly fun song, that throws at you so many ideas at ones that you can't help but be amazed. This was quite a surprise, infact. I fucking love songs like these. You probably hit the soft spot for me right there.
The instrumental section even works as 'joyous' since it's so good and fun, that I grin like Marco Minnemann each time. The crazy bits remind me of Destrage quite a lot, but the noisy production makes everything even more crazy and grand.
Possibly the best song yet in the roulette.
9.5/10

Elite
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - Pena

Rich, you could've sent many things. And you've chosen this.. thing. Now, as much as I love fucking batshit crazy stuff, when they're out of context I'm left kinda dizzy. This was pretty much that case. Like you said, it made me laugh a lot, but also question my entire existence and the human race's purpose.Hell, I'm not even sure why this song exists. It definitely makes my day more interesting. I just don't get why wasting some good points on this. Man, I guess I would've done a similar thing though  :rollin
6/10

Scorpion
Cat Empire - Fishies

This is another pretty fun little song. The instrumentation is very nice and serves as a really chill song that I enjoy a lot. I like the groove in this song, and I think it would fit greatly in a movie. The chorus is catchy at it makes my head bob a lot. It's pretty infectious overall, also because of the bassline. The piano solo is great, too. Really great, dynamically too.
8/10

Evermind
Bodies Of Water - Gold, Tan, Peach & Grey

This song is a bit strange. The intro really reminds me of Bent Knee, but then the song goes full indie rock. But it's not even straight indie rock, its texture is pretty thick: trumpets, a bit of ambient and just a splendid wall of vocals that really animates and makes the song interesting for me.
8/10

twosuitsluke
The King Blues - Let's Hang The Landlord

This is pretty much a straight rock song with a slight punk feel to it, and while it's definitely decent, it didn't really bring any form of joy or happiness to me, except for the fact that it sounds like a song straight out from a campfire or a musical. It's quite easygoing, if you know what I mean. The vocals don't quite do it for me, they are a bit too gang-ish. So, not that awesome, but still enjoyable.
7/10

---

This was a damn good round. Make round 4 even BETTER!
Here is the current chart:

Tyrias (25.5)
Train of Naught (25.5)
Parama (25.5)
Scorpion (24)
Evermind (24)
Sacul (23.5)
Stadler (21.5)
Tomislav95 (21)
twosuitsluke (20.5)
splent (20)
Elite (19.5)
Looks like there's some strong tie in the podium. Things will get more interesting.

You can send round 4, another open round. Make it great!

Awesome, didn't think I'd still be tied for first after that teaser but seems like it grew on you.

I was a bit unsure about this one, but only because there's like 5-6 just-as-good songs on the album, it's really up your alley and I bet you'll dig it.

I want to think a bit about round 4 now, I've had 2 bands on my mind but they couldn't have been more different from eachother :lol I'll probably send tomorrow.

Placing Anciients and Agalloch in the same category because "they both use growls" is prpbably the biggest generalization ever :lol theyre nothing alike. You probably sent trip-hop or something electronic or something? Idk

So far I've sent prog metal, prog metal, and..... prog metal :lol thats a bit of a stretch but they all had prog metal twitches. For this round I went with something Id like to call a fusion of progrock and jazz. Thats a dead giveaway if you know the band though.

OOOkay nice to see the competition going on here.
Everyone's in, but unfortunately listening will have to begin Monday, since I have a couple of music academy-related things to do this weekend. But this smells like a nice round, so I can't wait.

WTF  nobody posted for 5 days

eh, whatever. Tidbits!

Nice, didn't get a song like this in the roulette until now. Sounds like a funky pop vibe that I can dig. Not bad.

You've hinted at some pretty hit or miss type of vocals in this band. Well, I quite like them. They are fun to listen to, and this song's groove makes it quite good, otherwise it would be pretty stale.

As far as classic prog goes, I'm realizing just now what I've been missing on. I think I'll work on this band.

Strange mishmash of influences, and while I usually like songs like this one, this time there's something that I don't like, but I can't tell what. Still, a good song.

Sounds like Porcupine Tree met Santana, basically. Nice song, a bit too long for what it is, IMO.

Still didn't get into this one, though I love that bass line.

Very different from what I'm used to hear from this band. Intriguing.

Woosh, avant-garde black metal? Wow, this sounds nuts.

I like the low-key and gloomy atmosphere. The vocals are spot on.

Nice ballad, although I've heard far better as far as ballads go. Maybe with more listens I'll get into it.

This piece of music is chaotic as fuck. This particular band bores me after a while, but this song grabs my attention more than others do.

I would say mine is the bass line one, based on the badassery of the baseline. Also on the fact I know you've tried this band out before.

The first one is the only one I can really see being mine. Maybe the second one, if you have low standards for what's chaotic. So, losing my lead I guess?

Alright folks, here they finally are!

ROUND 4 - OPEN ROUND II: THE RESULTS

Very good round, certainly not better than last round, but I prefered it to round 2 for sure.

Train Of Naught
The Reign Of Kindo - Let It Go

Nice, different tune as opposed to what you usually send me. There really is nothing much to say about it: it has a nice jazzy/funky feel and a pop mentality, it's one of my favorite crossovers of genres so you got me there. It really is a pleasant song that makes me light-headed, in a good way. Not bad at all.
7.5/10

splent
Kansas - Song For America

This was certainly a surprise, since I only know Carry On My Wayward Son, and it was damn good yes, but I didn't expect full-on classic prog by this band. This shows how ignorant I am  :rollin
Well, anyways, Song For America is a great song. Kansas have a sound that stands between Yes and Genesis, and I can hear really well both influences in the track. It's fun, happy and adventorous, just how I like my classic prog. I will check out at least their classics, Leftoverture and this album, I think. Advice is welcome!
8.5/10

Tyrias
Kontrust - The Butterfly Defect

You guys must've liked last round, you just keep sending happy songs  :lol
This was a strange mashup of genres between Devin Townsend-ish hooks, spanish tribal vibe and alternative metal atmospheres. While it works, I can say it's not one of the best songs of its kind I've heard, but it's certainly decent and not a bad song at all.
7.5/10

Tomislav95
Beardfish - Comfort Zone

This song = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyhF5zYKyDY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyhF5zYKyDY)

Even if the similarity between the two is incredibly evident, I really enjoyed this song. It has a good Porcupine Tree vibe, but still manages to have quite its own sound. I really liked the vocals, they sound very in the part, let's say. Only thing is that I think it overstays its welcome a bit.. but that's a minor nitpick. Good song overall.
8/10

Stadler
Fish - Sunsets On Empire

A good ballad. Nothing exceptional, but it does work. Reminds me of U2 a lot. It makes me rock left and right, and yeah, it's pretty emotional in the end.
7/10

Parama
East Of The Wall - The Apologist

Now, this is how you use dynamics in music. This song is admittedly a bit all over the place, but one can't deny its grasping vibe of desperation and darkness. One thing I really like is the bass line after the intro. Really groovy and a bit creepy sounding. So while I didn't quite get into this as a song itself (if that makes any sense), I respect its intentions, vibe and structure.
7.5/10

twosuitsluke
Coheed and Cambria - The Willing Well III: Apollo II: The Telling Truth

What a badass tune! Groovy as fuck and explosive. You mentioned that the vocals are hit or miss in general. Well, for me they're a hit for sure. The tone enhances the badassery and uniqueness of this song. I really have a good time while listening to this track so I will probably check out this album.
9/10

Evermind
Lunatic Soul - Gutter

Since I enjoy Riverside, I expected to enjoy this too (It's Riverside's bassist/singer solo project). I did.
This is one of the most gloomy and eerie songs I've heard while not being dissonant at all. That is a great achievement for me.
The vibe of this track just grabs you and never lets go, it's incredibly well written. And I freaking love Mariusz' vocals in this one.
Great track!
9/10

Scorpion
Sigh - Amnesia

Nobody sent me black/doom/avant-gard metal 'til today  :rollin
But I think it is a good investment. This is quite a mental song, and I enjoy the state of mind it carries. Although I think it's a bit too long.
I like how it jumps constantly from black, to jazz, to electronic vibes, it really grabs my attention.
8.5/10

Elite
Meshuggah - Dancers To A Discordant System

The title of this song perfectly describes Meshuggah's music. That's it. The song itself is quite menacing and dark, as all Meshuggah tracks are, in the end.
My problem with this band is that they have these incredibly long songs that stay the same throughout, so my concetration keeps going off and on and off, and I inevitably lose both myself and my interest. Not all bands are capable to do that, so I don't know if they work or not, but still, I respect them, but they're not my cup of tea.
The problem applies to this song less, as it has more of a focused idea, but still, there's something that drives my attention away.
7/10

Sacul
Sigur Ròs - Brennisteinn

Usually Sigur Ròs make beautiful, heartwarming and shivering songs. This one is no exception but they do it in a more dark way. It's a catchy track too, and it doesn't overstay its welcome like a lot of post-rock tunes do. So yeah, very different from what I'm used to listen by them, but nontheless, it's very intriguing and I freaking love industrial vibes.
8/10

---DA CHART---

Tyrias 33
Train Of Naught 33
Parama 33
Evermind 33
Scorpion 32.5
Sacul 31.5
twosuitsluke 29.5
Tomislav95 29
Stadler28.5
splent28.5
Elite26.5

You are all incredibly close to each other. Anyone could win at this point  :rollin

You can start sending for round 5 which is an INSTRUMENTAL round. I expect something good. Go read the description if you want, in the main post.

It's almost scary how Tyrias and me have gotten the EXACT same score in every single round so far :lol I'm glad to still be tied for first after what seems like a not-so-good result compared to the first 3, but I don't think I'd do too well sending the same sort of songs as TROK as this is clearly my favorite band and maybe even favorite song in the genre, so it doesn't get much better IMO.

Guess who I'm sending for the instrumental round guys :neverusethis:

wow didn't even realise this.

The thing is that it's getting harder for me to sit down and listen to the songs in a row. I'm just buying my time for good results, instead of giving poor judgement in a short time (one listen), although this time I was slowed down because the entries were kind of slow to get here. But yeah, sorry, last time was better.

BTW yeah, tidbits on Tuesday and results on Wednesday. I'm trying to make the best out of it, it's the busiest time in my life probably.

Sounds like Infected Mushroom, with electric proggy guitars.

I don't tend to like post-rock as much as I did with this track.

Given what you said, I think this could work better in the context of the album.

Such a fun track. And relaxing too.. and to think this band toured with much heavier artists. Love it!

Paints a beautiful picture in my head. Like I'm alone on a hammock sleeping on a beach.

Amazing use of acoustic instruments. Really enjoyable.

This sounds straight out of a Bond movie title sequence. I'm not even a fan of 007 but this could really work in it. Amazing stuff all around.

A bit repetitive, but it works in the context of the track. It gets obsessive at one point.

Unexpectedly groovy, but a bit boring song, so far.

This is quite an experience, even though it's only 4 minutes of music.

Interesting, quite heavy for a band like this. This is an album I've always wanted to get into, sounds promising.

Here we go with the results of this instrumental round:

ROUND 5: INSTRUMENTAL - THE RESULTS

Train Of Naught
Lechuga - O Vurdon

I'm not a big fan of latin music as it is, but if more styles of music are incorporated, hell yes.
This confirmes my tastes, as it's pretty great. It starts out completely latin-sounding, and the prog metal blends in progressively. Great and fun track. Sounds like Infected Mushroom, with electric proggy guitars, but as ridicolous that may sound, it still is consistent throughout. The only thing I don't like is the outro: the song ends too abruptly.. but then again, the rest is great.
9/10

Tyrias
Russian Circles - Mlàdek

I don't tend to listen nor to like post-rock, it's too "deep" for me. This song right here, is an exception. Everything is wonderfully slowly built up to the outro, where all hell breaks loose. There's nothing else to say, really. It's pretty badass too.
8/10

Tomislav95
Camel - Rhayader

With the last listen of this I just realised: this incredibly reminds me of Ayreon. Anyways, Camel is a band I see pop up here and there, and I know they are pretty great as far as classic prog goes. I need to check out their album, but this song isn't really the reason. It's good enough, but it would work better in context, maybe. So, thanks for reminding me!
7/10

splent
Thank You Scientist - Suspicious Waveforms

Wow, I mean, wow. I knew this band was based on brass and blues, jazz and progressive, but I didn't know they did it this accurate. Seriously, while listening to this song, I started snapping my fingers. I never do this, and it's sign of incredibly believable songwriting. This band tours with Haken, toured with Periphery and Coheed & Cambria.. and that's really mindblowing. I was willing to check them out already, but this sold me. The song is funky, jazz, blues and prog.. and it's all fused so well together, that it instantly reminded me of Weather Report. It has the same kind of vibe, which is incredibly fun to listen to.
9/10

Scorpion
Buckethead - Hills Of Eternity

Scorpion sent me this ballad from the man with many albums (264. I'm serious).
This unites both a sappy atmosphere and a catchy melody that relaxes me a lot. It really aints a beautiful picture in my head, like I'm alone on a hammock sleeping at the beach. I totally expected other stuff from both you and Buckethead, but this was great enough.
8.5/10

twosuitsluke
Baroness - Stretchmaker

Similarly to Buckethead, this is another ballad.. it has the same vibe, but it sounds very different at the same time. What I like this time is the feel of summer, and given that it's finally started, man, this fits my mindset right now, even though I'm friggin' busy. I'm relaxed at the same time. And this song describes that. Amazing use of acoustic instruments too, you can almost feel the fingers on the frets. I really like this track.
8.5/10

Stadler
King Crimson - Red

After many difficulties, finally this song was sent  :lol
When I pressed play, I was literally blown away, as I didn't expect such heaviness from King Crimson. Makes sense, this is one of Kurt Cobain's favorite albums, and another one of the 'to listen to' list. This song does a good job as an opener, the riffs are cool and strange, just like the band. The only thing is, it's pretty streched out in my opinion, and repetitive. But not bad at all.
7/10

Parama
Rosetta - Absent

When you said 'Enjoy the violence', I thought I was getting a regular metal piece, maybe with blast beat and stuff. Nope. You are just too good to be so predictable. Absent is a.. voyage through the human will for violence. A twisted 9-minute song that with one single riff, creates such pathos.. Yeah, it's pretty repetitive, but that's the point there. It makes sense. The song gets really obsessive near the end, and you're there, with your hands in your hair... It's creepy. Really creepy, what this song does. Still, it's not as much as Clara did in the last roulette, but it's really eerie. Thank you for playing with my soul!

Elite
Have A Nice Life - There Is No Food

I really have no clue about what to say about this one. It's just.. a tremendous experience of music in just 4 minutes. There's this simple keyboard line that repeats on a loop, with an telephone-like sound. Then the low note hits. It's like a punch in the stomach, it's like diving in the ocean. It's beautiful, you can even hear fainted, stuffy voices.. This song is how you do ambient. With short songs that leave trace.
9/10

Sacul
Ulver - Glammer Hammer

This is a track from a band that is beloved on this forum. And given this song, I'm not that attracted to Ulver, really. This is from their newest album with an unpronounceable name, and it's just a groovy keyboard track with a beat. Nothing much really.. It didn't hit me as opposed to some of the other amazing stuff of this round. Maybe try again with something else next time!
6/10

Evermind
Jon Lord - Sarabande

Having recently rediscovered my love for Deep Purple (Ian Paice played in my town with my school academy's teachers.. it was a mindblowing experience), I got pretty excited when you sent this. It's a masterful piece of music, with an orchestra, a jazz vibe and it could sound really good in a movie, I'm thinking 007 or something like it. Your story about Jon Lord was very moving and I cannot imagine the heartbreak, so this made it all more special. It's an amazing track, sounds historical, it sounds grand and so, so fun and groovy. Even the drumming is great! Great entry all around.

Finally a tiebreaker round, only two ties in the chart right now.

So, finally we're at the middle point of the roulettes. 5 rounds were played, 5 now  await us, not counting the last one. Buckle up, after round 8, 6 people will get eliminated!

I know I've been a slowpoke, as always, really, let's see how I do with the latter part of the roulette. Next round is an open round, once again. Send!

Glad to have that round of the way without too much lost, the only instrumentals I actually listen to are post-rock.

Now, let's try and regain that lead.

Okay I had no idea mine could've been the Infected Mushroom tidbit :lol I don't hear it, but then again I only know a handful of IM songs.

Glad you liked it, I can understand the complaint about the ending. It's might just be my favorite instrumental ever so I'm glad not to have it bashed into the ground lol

Who woulda thought that the pessimistic Russian would be in the leads! It's at this point that I'm going to send some more random good stuff instead of basing stuff of your tastes and bands you like.

I'll send soon but I may have to think about it a bit, I find open rounds way harder than themed ones because there's so much to choose from.

Perhaps I should've send this very song to Train instead of the instrumental I picked for him.

Glad you liked it so much. Now I'm going to screw up the next three rounds and get eliminated. :lol

Can I send for the next 3 rounds already in advance? I'm going to be on holiday camping and most of the time without internet for 10 days a week from now, and I don't want to hold everything up.

If you're worried I'm going to steal away possibilites from other people by sending earlier, I'm pretty sure all of my stuff is obscure enough no one else would send it :P.

Sent a song off one of my favorite indie-rock albums

I think that would be fine Tyrias, and in the slim chance that someone does send one of those bands/songs you could maybe send 'substitute' songs along with them or something.

That's what I did. I'm not really all that confident I'll get back in the first spot with the 3 songs I sent, but I did promise to send mikemangjoy stuff outside of his comfort zone, and I try not to go back on promises. I'm curiously awaiting results.

I probably asked this before but I forgot: With themed rounds, do you partially rate the songs on how fitting they are to the themes or is it like you check if it fits the theme and then you rate the song on its own.

Asking this because I have a lot of songs with dark subject matters that aren't all that dark instrumentally but I think they're very good songs nonetheless.

Dark lyrical subjects won't work. I sent Absolute Priority - Fear of the Night in the dark round in his v1 and I've got 3 points reduction or something.

Yeah I was planning to go with a heavy metal tune but if you get point deduction for it not sounding dark enough I'll probably end up just sending some depressing shoegaze or black metal or something :lol I don't have any dark stuff in the vein of Swans, or Circle Takes The Square, some extremely dark shit I've gotten in my roulette.

I do, actually.

Could be, but the music has to have also some darkness to it. I didn't find it in Ev's song, personally.. but anyway, you'll see once I write the description of that round.

Anyways, bad news for y'all.
I have a wedding tomorrow, so I'll leave for three or four days. I won't be able to listen to the tracks at all, this should change on monday, or even saturday/sunday.

Results tomorrow, but as of now:

TIDBITS GALORE

I'm not that much into this genre, but the grooviness and fun of this piece makes me like it quite a good lot.

Digging the latin vibes in this tune.

The second half is nothing compared to the first one, infact it does feel a bit inconsistent. It's the only flaw in an otherwise excellent track.

I can almost taste the groove, like, it's in my mouth. It's insane.

Very interesting track, I love the vocals. Meaning both vocalists. The song represents its title at best.

Catchy and quirky tune, I can dig it. I regret not exploring this band since it's pretty huge, but I think I'll get around to it.

Sick vibe, the songwriting is amazing here. Feels real dirty at certain points.

Unexpectedly circus-y-like. Not that I'm complaining, mind you

What a track. Reminds me of Opeth in certain points, but overall it's an excellent song from start to finish.

Kind of standard riffing going on, but the sheer energy in this one makes it good.

Man, I have no idea where this comes from, but it's how I'd like to party.

I'll just go ahead and give you the

ROUND 6 - OPEN ROUND III: RESULTS

This was a particularly good round, easily the best one along with round 3 so far in the roulette. There's not a single song I don't enjoy.

Let's dive into it:

Train Of Naught
Foals - Inhaler

You pointed out this being an indie-rock song, and yeah, I can see it. But the thing is, this is the most fun I've ever had with an indie-rock track. It's also one of the most unique of its genre, so it definitely caught my attention.
I love the instruments in it, the general sound production and the groovy atmosphere in this. Also that sudden heavy chorus is a highlight.
Cool track!
8/10

Tyrias
Gorilla Rodeo - ...And The Devil May Care

This was a pleasant surprise, literally. After a gloomy intro, which doesn't tell you where the song is going (I mean, after that intro the song could go anywhere), the track transitions into latin-country-rock glory. Another case of the 'one of the most unique and enjoyable songs of this genre'.
I mean, this one is really really fun to listen to. I like the singer's voice, it fits well with the music.
8.5/10

twosuitsluke
Machine Head - Halo

Other than the fact that they toured with Metallica and that there was one song of theirs on a Guitar Hero game, I know little about Machine Head. But I know enough to know that The Blackening should be a really good album, and finally I get around to test it.
Impressions?
Well, the first half of the song is good enough, a groove metal melodic piece, that is decent enough. The real magic though starts after the guitar solo, as you yourself have stated in your PM  :lol
After quite an heavy breakdown, the guitar solo keeps things going and at one point there's this gorgeous guitar harmony going on for a while, and it's just the two guitars, nothing more. That was a jaw dropping moment. After that the song quiets down, to explode again in full glory.
This song is a bit inconsistent because of that, the second half is incredibly superior than the first. But overall, great stuff there.
9/10

splent
Jean-Luc Ponty - The Trans Love Express

Some fine musicianship in this one. An extremely groovy (I can almost taste the groove, it's insane) instrumental track that cuts right to the point and gets my head bopping from the get-go. The guitar work is quite good, and overall this kinda reminds me of Rush. Nothing much else to say.
8/10

Parama
Oceans Of Slumber - Winter

Yes, Parama, you guessed right.
This fucking song.
Now, how is it you keep sending outstanding stuff, is out of my mind. Please, teach me your ways.
This song is, simply put, pretty much perfect. The thing that stands out is how the lyrics accompany so well the music, this sounds like winter. Just like Opeth sound like autumn and desolation. It's the same feeling I get, and that's hard to accomplish.
Plus, the female singer is an incredible addition to this vibe. She has such a great voice too.
At one point, some brutal screeching vocals enter and make the song even more eerie, and this is another singer I really enjoy.
This is just a wonderful composition, I should really check out this band, never even heard of them.
9.5/10

Stadler
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Knife Edge

This is another historical band I should've really checked out at this point, but didn't.
Quite a catchy song, that plays with dynamics really well, the riff is quirky, I enjoy it. The instrumentation of this song, in general, are really cool, almost playful. It gives me an idea of a fun jam session with a band, I can really picture it in my head. Good song.
7.5/10

Tomislav95
Red Fang - Wires

Quite a fun song, this is. I love the dirty riffing, with the fuzz effect. As I've already stated, stoner rock production sounds great for me, and this song does bring that to the table. Everything is so electric here, I'm almost arfraid to touch my headphones fearing to get electrocuted or something. So yeah, what I really dig here is the vibe of the track.
8/10

Evermind
David Gilmour - Faces Of Stone

Good old David Gilmour. Unfortunately I never checked out his solo career, but it sounds like it's quite the stuff. This song is quite unique from what I know about him: it has circus-like brass sections! It kind of blew my mind. It's beautiful to hear those Pink Floyd soundscape in modern production. There's one part that really reminds me of Hey You, and David sounds like Roger here, acting-wise. I have no idea what the song is about, but it does sound like it comes from a concept album. A strange mix of new sounds and nostalgia.
8.5/10

Scorpion
Wilderun - The Garden Of Fire

This is an insane progressive-death metal song. Reminds me of Opeth but it's also something completely on its own. At the beginning it sounds like Native Construct to me, then as the vocals enter it gets super dark. The song then continuosly alternates between clear and distorted vocals, with a couple of really nice orchestral spots. The songwriting is great, throughout its ten minutes the song never gets boring or repetitive. Folk acoustic guitars, growls, cinematic orchestral composition.. just everything you might want from this type of music, done greatly.
9/10

Elite
Textures - New Horizons

I was missing some djenty stuff in the roulette (apart from Meshuggah last round), and here it is! While some of these ideas are a bit predictive and over-used in general, I can get a kick out of this thanks to the sheer energy it has! The vocals really drive the track, it sounds anthemic. So yeah, I have a feeling that this song live ought to be mind-blowing. Nothing that original but it's good nontheless!
7.5/10

Sacul
Zardonic - Vigilante

I don't know where this comes from, who made it, and why you sent it. I just know that this is how I'd like to party. It just feel wrong to listen to this song while sitting. This is the type of music to get people pumped, even the lyrics tell "Get up again come on come on come on".
It's an electronic base, with hip-hop type of vocals, heavy guitars and dubstep sounds every once in a while.
Just amazing and fun times with this song.
9/10

---

What a great round! Not even a vote below a 7.5. I bet you want the charts, huh? I'll give ya sum charts:

Evermind 51
Parama 51
Train Of Naught 50
Tyrias 49.5
Scorpion 49.5
twosuitsluke 47
Sacul 46.5
splent 45.5
Tomislav95 44
Stadler 43
Elite 43

You can now start to send for round 7 (somebody already did, actually), which is the dark round. I'll just put the description for this round here:

Either if it's discordant chords, a sinister drone or generally doomy atmosphere, suicidal/homicidal thoughts or even more fucked up stuff, I really love the gut wrenching feeling that dark songs are capable to give to me. I'm looking for that, I'm looking for stuff that makes me feel a little uncomfortable but just as much for me to freaking adore the music. Or, something similar, that makes me want to cry a lot. The choice is yours. Send away!

Yea, maybe the second half of Halo is better but it's because it builds to it. You've got to half the first half of the song so you can build to the climax. It wouldn't work if it was all climax  :lol

Think I've got the perfect band for the next round. Not seen them mentioned here on DTF as far as I can remember. The founding member and driving force behind this band suffers with depression I think and has said in many interviews that he's wanted to end it all many times.

Fair enough. :tup

I was literally going to send Machine Head for the next round but figured that just 'dark subjects' wouldn't cut it for this round, as it's going to be graded for how dark it sounds aswell I assume. Was gonna go with my favorite, A Farewell To Arms. Mike, you really need to hear this album, it's right up your alley :metal

Textures hasn't really clicked with me. Checked out the new album upon release and it has been my least favorite album of the year since :lol given, I've almost only checked out stuff I was really sure of liking so far, and this was more of a random spotify lurk.

I think I'll stick with my submission, it kinda fits. :P

I think my submission is likely to just fit the theme and be dark as fuck. But it won't end up being a song I would ever send in a roulette otherwise.

You've said you want dark, I'll try to tick the boxes for lyrically dark and also with an ominous feel.

Will send in the next 24 hours, sorry for the delay. I want it to be DARK!!

Sent some noir, which according to Sacul isn't really noir, so there.
When I think of noir, I think of this (https://youtu.be/xY1wBUrdRFg), Ulver's Perdition City (particularly Hallways of Always), and the Twin Peaks soundtrack.

i guess i wouldn't care so much about trying to fit the theme except
1. i'm actually doing good in this roulette
2. you take theme into account a heck of a lot in determining scores, apparently
3. the music i find "dark" is the kind of music i am absolutely positive you would hate (black metal, doom metal, drone metal etc.)

so basically that's why i still haven't sent yet

Distorted bass is one of my favorite 'dark tropes', this tracks has tons of it.

This song has a trippy vibe that makes me obsessively bop my head. Does that mean it works?

Beautiful atmospheres, but the vocals kind of ruin it for me. Haunting lyrics, though.

This sounds straight out of a noir movie. The story behind it is incredibly sad and horrible, makes the track even more moving and eerie.

Nice bluesy vibe going on here. The lyrics are sad and you can hear the anger in the vocalist, amazing performance.

Totally reminds me of Ayreon, especially of some songs on 01011001.

Sounds like a bearable version of Guns 'N Roses. Can dig, although I really can't see the dark aspect of this track.

Haunting atmospheres, love the sound production in this. The choice of this particular album cover is really well done, it captures the vibe
really well.

Everything feels like black pitch in this song. Probably the 'darkest' of this round, theme-wise.

Could be any of these. Leaning towards the album cover one or the one where the vocals ruin it. Though like I said I have no idea what the Italian lyrics mean so IDK if they're that haunting, they sound pretty haunting though

I have literally zero doubt that this is mine:

"Sounds like a bearable version of Guns 'N Roses. Can dig, although I really can't see the dark aspect of this track."

I won't explain it now in detail, but it's basically a singer predicting his own death, or at least singing about the inevitability of his (way too soon) death, and the kicker is, he actually DID die, in real life, about a year after the song was recorded, of the same thing he sang about.

Here we go, folks!

ROUND 7: DARK ROUND - RESULTS!

Now guys, unfortunately I had to cancel my PM inbox for the new round, 'cause I thought someone was going to send, and there was no space left.. so yeah, I have the results but I can't remember who sent which song, sorry for that. Please identify yourself so that I can write the chart again  :lol

Chelsea Wolfe - Colour Of Blood (Tyrias?)
This track has a haunting and eerie feel throughout, thanks to its deep bass which in contrast with the falsetto vocals creates like a dissonant feel that leaves me uneasy. I've heard a lot about Chelsea Wolfe and her latest album so I was glad to get an entry (well, actually two, but you'll see) from her. I can definitely see where this is going, but I would've liked a more interesting song.
6.5 points

Obsidian Kingdom - Away / Absent (Elite?)
Away / Absent is a 7 minute and a half tour-de-force through the fury of Obsidian Kingdom. The energy is very high, but it's not exactly all vivid, infact, the production (especially talking about the vocals) leaves the track with this 'oblivion' feel. So yeah, it is kinda scary and menacing, but I don't think I see the dark stuff completely. Still, good song.
7 points

Woods Of Ypres - Distractions Of Living Alone
As far as the music and lyrics go, this song is tragically beautiful. Doom metal-ish slow rhythm and lines about suicide.. what more can you ask from a dark track? The answer is better vocals. No matter how beautiful this song is, the vocals aren't just my things. The guy blurts out the lyrics which are very personal and intimate, but he has such an.. invasive voice that it really ruins my immersion. A shame, for the track is great by itself!
7 points

Billie Holiday - Strange Fruit
Can I say it? I'll just go ahead and say it. Perfect choice.
This freaking song is from 1939, and it talks about the lynching of afroamericans during that period, when they hanged the bodies on trees. And this song creates a perfect dark vibe. I love Billie's voice and you can actually hear her fear in it. The production is what it is of course, but it adds to the experience. It sounds like something out of a noir movie, for me, and it works incredibly in the context of this round.
9 points

Thrice - Beggars
When I said dark I also meant pretty depressing, and here we go, infact. The chord progression is predictable, yes, but what drives the song is the vocalist. It's not that long of a song, but man the vocalist of Thrice delivers an incredible, emotional, great performance. He screams out lyrics about how unfortunate one life can be, how sad and how terrible. 'In this life we are beggars all' is a wonderful line that encompasses those feeling beautifully. The final guitar riff is incredible too.. another perfect choice for this round.
9 points

Amadeus Awad's Eon - Noir - This is Evermind, I know it
From the intro, this sounds like an Ayreon song straight out of 01011001. Now, that album was already dark per se (talking about how the human world was just a creation of aliens which life was ending thanks to technology, and repeating the cycle), this song has the same kind of vibe. I like the folk instrumentation, it's what really drives the song along with the vocals. Also, Gavin Harrison on drums. It can get a bit stale, but at least it's a catchy, gloomy track, with a nice guitar solo too.
8 points

Mother Love Bone - Chloe Dancer / Crown Of Thornes This is Stadler, I also know it
Didn't expect a song like this to be the longest of the round. Well, singers talking about their death isn't new for me, since I'm a big Nirvana fan, and I know how dark that stuff can get, but I don't know why I can't actually feel the same thing here, even though the topic is the same. Overall this song is pretty great, a good hard/blues-rock feel, basically like a bearable version of Guns 'N Roses, I  just personally can't get a dark kick out of it. Maybe there are other tracks of MLB that are better in this aspect.
8 points

Novembre - Verne Train of Naught.
Here we go with the italian band I had no clue of. What the hell was I thinking? This stuff is great! Beautiful atmospheres, nice melodies with the guitars, all intertwined with melanchonic vocals. The second half, with the italian lyrics is even better though.. that's a very touching moment of music, that reminds me a bit of Steven Wilson, lyrically-wise. Musically, instead, the song gets slower and darker, and it gets big, with huge vocal harmonies that send shivers.. beautiful stuff coming from my country.
Also, the music is perfect with an artwork like that. Beautiful.
8.5 points

Tryptikon - My Pain
This is probably the darkest song of the round. It starts very slowly, with just a piano and drone. Then a machine drum (?) appears, and some female vocals (Fall asleep in my arms, never to wake up ever again), which already create a pretty eerie and sad atmosphere, which is enhanced by the monologue afterwards. This is a perfect blend of sad and creepy, that in this round, works perfectly.
8.5 points

Gorillaz - El Mañana
Trip down the memory lane, as I was a big fan of 'Feel Good Inc.' when I was a kid. This is from the same album, and man, Gorilazz do freak me out a little. You don't know their faces or how they look like, or at least I don't. To me, they'll always be just the cartoon versions.
Anyways, as to the song, it's pretty sad as far as this band goes, but that's pretty much it. It's not that interesting compared to other stuff I've listened from them, but it's decent.
6 points

Chelsea Wolfe - Carrion Flowers Sacul.

Yeah, I had to accept just another CW entry because it was already pretty late when I got this, and I wanted to start listening ASAP, so, to not drag it out further, I just closed an eye. Well, was it worth it?
This song is pretty much just like Colour Of Blood, just a bit more energic. Yeah, not sure that's the right word. It's more 'doom' whereas the other one was more 'avant-garde'. But yeah, the vocals and the bass, again, are great contrast to one another, but this time the vocals kind of ruin it for me since it's a bit of a repetitive song, but whatever, it's good enough.
7 points

Okay, for the chart I'll just wait for your response, but you can start sending. Remember, round 8 is the last one with every contestant, then six of you are getting eliminated, so, make it great!

I sent the Thrice song. You should definitely check out the band, Beggars is probably their best song, but they have a lot of quality stuff all the same. Vheissu is a good album to start with, if you're interested, as is the Alchemy Index, but that one is a lot longer than Vheissu (it's actually four EPs of around 25-30 minutes each).

I dunno what my favorite thrice song is. they operate on 9/10 a lot but I can't say they have one amazing standout song or anything, at least to me.

To me, Beggars and Daedalus are my one and two, pretty easily.. Like, they have tons of great songs, but nothing that reaches the brilliance of those two songs. Red Sky kinda comes close, but not quite.

Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns was mine.

Maybe "dark" isn't the right word; it's more forelorn and fatalistic.  Those lyrics, of inevitable death and destruction really paint a picture for me.   It's the sound of a man giving up, and even love isn't strong enough to stop that.

Pretty sure you guys hate me right now but I haven't had a single chance to even begin the listening until now. I had preparations and rehearsals for my music academy final show, plus a concert these days. But now it shouldn't be too bad.. I think.

I'll have a good listen to the stuff now and then tomorrow again, so hopefully in a couple of days I'll have the results up.

I'd be fine with that if it's needed to be honest. The roulette has been fun but it's obviously not the best time for our host, could also postpone it and put it on a hiatus if that's possible.

Also I sent my best song this round :corn honestly probably my favorite song of my first roulette looking back at it now and it didn't even get a 10
Title: Re: mikemangioy's Roulette II: An Unexpected Tourney (ROUND 7 - RESULTS)
Post by: mikemangioy on August 03, 2016, 05:05:22 AM
Okay guys here's what I'll do:

Once the results are up (tomorrow morning), I will cut the last three rounds since I don't want to finish up in late september basically  :rollin

There will be just another round with the four people that are staying, and it will be the final round, and you can chose between 'unique' (which was going to be round 9) and 'epic', though time limit is 20 minutes now. That's it.

I won't do an hiatus because I already have tons of pressure on me personally (because I hate not having the time to do this), and having an hiatus would cause even more of that. So, prepare yourselves!

Oh damn, really torn between the unique round and the epic round now! The one I planned for 'unique' is a bit riskies but I feel like it could pay off tremendously. Guess I'll wait until the results to decide.

Here we go finally after two weeks of wait! These are round 8's results, and they're all good, the good news is. Not even a bad song in this batch!

Let's dive into 'em

ROUND 8: OPEN ROUND IV

Sacul
Tim Bowness - 'Sing To Me'

To start things off, this is a beautiful melodic song. It has dreamy atmospheres that definitely remind me of early Porcupine Tree works, and infact, if I understand correctly Steven Wilson has something to do with this album, as I remember him posting the album cover on Facebook a while back. So yeah, kind of a safe choice there, but it worked! It has a beautiful hook that doesn't overstay its welcome in my head, and the instruments aren't invasive and don't ruin the immersion in the song at all. It's like sticking your head in the clouds!
8.5

Tomislav95
Paradise Lost - 'No Hope In Sight'

It's kind of rare to hear a doom metal song so short and catchy. Well, let me get this straight, it's not really catchy. It just doesn't have the redundancy that other songs of the genres seem to have, and to me they can ruin it. It's well built thorughout, and it seems infact to be the most popular song by this band. It's not mindblowing, but it's certainly well done.
Funny thing, the main riff reminds me of Hell's Bells, heh.
7.5

Parama
Slice The Cake - 'The Holy Mountain'

Man, will you just stop not sucking?! It's getting embarassing. Well, here we go, this song by a band whose name made me think I was going to get another 'Moron Police' type of song, instead is a fucking huge Prog Death metal epic. This is called The Holy Mountain for a reason, guys. The soundscapes are vast, the impact is massive and it's really emotional. The best part of the whole track is the second one, where a long spoken part builds up to the last fadeout. The vocalist of this band takes the cake (:neverusethis:), but man, let me say that to build a huge atmosphere like this takes some talented musicians. Amazing stuff all around.
9.5

Train Of Naught
Rishloo - 'Landmines'

You pointed out The Mars Volta being a huge influence on this track, and while I definitely see that, there's one thing that keeps popping up in my mind:
MUSE.
Like, early Muse, Showbiz and OOS. This has the same insanity, eloquency and emotion to it. And production too, the sounds are basically the same. The resemblance is great in my eyes, but it doesn't ruin the track. Infact, it's a great track, I have tons of fun listening to it.
8

twosuitsluke
Cyinc - 'The Space For This'

This song starts beautifully melodic and then explodes in a frantic question-throwing song, as the title gets repeated with great fury. It really is an impactful track that leaves me with a nice taste of Cynic, I wanna hear more after this track. Great stuff, it left me unsatisfied and looking for more!
8.5

Tyrias
Azedia - 'Something'

A perfect example of the right thing at the right time. I needed music like this right now, in my life. Is this trance-pop or something? Well, it works. It gets me to another dimension of.. complete peace. This was an unexpected entry, even if it was yours, Tyrias, and I reacted to it very positively, it immediatly hit the spot for me. As the beat dropped a huge smile on my face was drawn and it never gets away while I listen to it.
9

Evermind
Phideaux - 'Gift Of The Flame'

Love the folk atmosphere in this. I imagine a prairie while listening to this. It's a nice track, light-sounding, although it doesn't really get anywhere consistent in my opinion, but it lets itself listen smoothly so I like it for that.
7.5

Elite
Trauma Field - 'Life Passed'

Rick, you're pissed. I know it  :lol I'm sorry about not having enough time for this roulette, I really wish I could. But in the end I think I didn't do as bad of a job, I mean, we're here, the last round is around the corner, I just needed to shorten what was already pretty long.

With that out of the way, this was an interesting entry. When I first started listening I though ' not another doom track please ' , but, similarly to Paradise Lost, this track didn't bore me. It has nice songwriting, it's catchy and it doesn't let go of my attention. The guitar solo is really great and the strings in the end add a touch of emotion to it all. Real nice track!
8

Scorpion
Dir En Grey - 'Vinshuka'

At first I thought Dir En Grey (which are pretty popular here, believe it or not) were a scandinavian band, so you can imagine my face when I heard friggin' japanese lyrics.
Other than the surprise, man, these guys are on fire!
Every two minutes the song turns itself around and offers new and more fun stuff. It is a built-up listen, some of this stuff is really crazy. It has me interested for sure. Will check more stuff. But man, if this is an indication of how they sound like, I'm sold.
9

Stadler
Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - A Simple Game Of Genius

Eeeeeh it's okay. I mean, it's not bad, but I expected a bit more by this band, seeing that I like it more than Oasis itself. I guess I see why it's only an iTunes bonus track, it has its ideas, but it doesn't do too much to them, and it goes on for seven minutes so.. yeah. It's not a bad song, but it could do more, in my honest opinion.
7

splent
Worlds - 'Little Lens'

Haken meets Yes meets 80's new wave.
Never even would've thought of such an intertwined mix of influences, but Affinity prepared me for this, it was just unexpected.
And... it's good. It's interesting to say the least, I've never heard about this band.. when did this song even come out? Huh.
Overall, it's  fun track, I love the off-beats in it and the vocals. The bass is also real groovy in this one. One of the most interesting entries in the whole roulette.
8

------------------
So, here we go. After 8 rounds and almost three months (   ) we get to see who gained access to the final round. And those would be...

SCORPION, with 67.5 points
PARAMA
TRAIN OF NAUGHT
and EVERMIND, with each 66.5 points!
aaand last but not least TYRIAS with 65 points.

Man, dat even score. For the final round the scores will not count anymore. I'll just pick the song I like most and the person who sent it will win the roulette! It doesn't matter anyways, since you're pretty much all tied.

To the rest of you, which I respectfully and dutifully salute:

Twosuitsluke (64 points)
Splent (62.5 points)
Sacul (62 points)
Tomsilav95 (58.5 points)
Elite and Stadler (58 points)

You were all amazing players, and each of you sent some really great songs that I will certainly relisten and possibly explore further. Thank you guys so much for participating and for your patience with me. Like, really, a huge shoutout for that. Once again, I'm so sorry.

Enough of that though, let's get this thing done! Send me ROUND 9! THE FINAL ROUND!

With unique btw, I mean a song that you think doesn't sound like anything else you've ever listened to. So yeah, if it's unique power metal, it counts. Could be anything.

Now that my first choice was rejected because I'm too stupid to read the banned list apparently, a few questions:
What is your definition fpor epic? Just long, or can it also be rather short, but with an epic feeling (at least according to me :P)?
How do you judge if it's unique enough?

Also, is there a time limit?

I'm already regretting my choice for this last round. I should have sent something weirder, like that awesome 17 minute orchestral dubstep track I'm listening to right now. Not that I don't like the song I sent, but it's just not out-there enough.

I had no idea what to send, so I just sent a song that I really love myself, and if mike ends up liking it, all the better. I didn't expect to go this far anyway, so I might as well just go with my strategy of sending stuff that I love myself, and we'll see where that takes me.

You guys are ready for this?

FINAL ROUND - THE RESULTS

I'm not gonna rank the songs though, I'll just say my thoughts about them. And shortly, since I need to pack, I'm leaving tomorrow  :lol

Let's get into this:

Parama
Thy Catafalque - Molekulàis Gepézetek

Wow, you surely were aiming for both epic and unique. Never heard about this band and I understand it's from Hungary, so, crazy hungarian avant-gard black metal is a first for sure  :lol
Even though this type of music usually bores me a bit, this works really good as background music, but also drags you into the listening experience. I like the change of style towards the middle section with the 'Mr. SaxoBeat' type of sound. It gets back to crazy towards the end, which is never bad.
Totally mad and fun track to listen to!

Train Of Naught
Waken Eyes - Exodus

What I like about this track is the structure. It's a typical prog-epic structure but it has its subtle twists that make it interesting. I really like the acoustic march-type interlude with the samples going on, it's possibly my favorite moment in the entire 18 minutes, and also the main riff  :metal :metal
In the end though, I feel this is too much typical and heard before, I mean, there's a solo that's incredibly reminiscent of The Count Of Tuscany and overall, the vibe is pretty DT and Symphony X-ish, which is not a bad thing at all, but, with a song like this it overstays its welcome a bit, I think. Not a bad tune at all, though.

Tyrias
Agalloch - Fire Above, Ice Below

I had already heard 'In The Shadow Of My Pale Companion' by Agalloch, the song I mean, and it struck me as incredibly powerful and immersive. I genuinely loved it from the first listen, but never went again listening. I regret now doing so, 'cause this song had a similar effect to me. It took me a couple of spins, but man, such vibes. I like the use of the whispered screech, a nice departure from standard black metal stuff. The acoustic guitars provide to the pathos of the track in a great manner, it gives me a 'desolated mountain' type of vibe. It's incredible stuff, I don't even know how to describe it.

Evermind
Need - Orvam

As of today, this is a song I really needed to hear. A particular thing happened today in my life and I heard this song and it was plainly talking about me (even though in the end my situation got resolved, thankfully). Orvam is.. one of the most emotionally exhausting tracks I ever heard. It reminds me of the vibe The Death Of Music (by Devin Townsen, you should really check it out.) gives me. Everything about this is amazing, the production, the lyrics, the musicianship, the structure, it just is a great way to end the album. And let me tell you, the final spoken part, even though I can't speak greek, sent chills down my spine. I later read it is a Baudelaire poem. An incredible track.

Scorpion
Grayceon - War's End

There are a couple things that really stand out about this track: one is its dark and sad vibe. The other is the really subtle jazz drumming. It may not sound like it, but that shit is hard.
Overall it's a great track to listen to, even just for the production, although it has not too much going on, but I appreciate you sent an important song for you.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, these are the five tracks that were sent. After enough listens, I had a clear winner in my mind. It isn't really what I expected based on previous rounds but eh.

No, but really, congratulations to Evermind and to everybody else. I'm gonna make a playlist out of the best stuff that was sent, which will look slightly like this:

The Struts - Roll Up
The Ocean - Into The Uncanny
Genesis - Eleventh Earl Of Marl
Shining - Fisheye
Ihsahn - Celestial Violence
The Hrisch Effekt - Cotard (btw I got really into them this past month, insanely good band, thanks Parama.)
Caravan Palace - Suzy
Moron Police - Stomp That Goomba
Lunatic Soul - Gutter
Lechuga - O Vurdon
Thank You Scientist - Suspicious Waveforms
Jon Lord - Sarabande
Machine Head - Halo
David Gilmour - Faces Of Stone
Wilderun - The Garden Of Fire
Zardonic - Vigilante
Billie Holiday - Strange Fruit
Thrice - Beggars
Tim Bowness - Sing To Me
Cynic - The Space For This
Azedia - Something
Dir En Grey - Vinushka
Slice The Cake - The Holy Mountain
Waken Eyes - Exodus
Agalloch - Fire Above, Ice Below
Need - Orvam

So, as you can see, pretty much each of you has sent a great track to add to my library! Nice job guys, I've really enjoyed the roulette, as far as the roulette went. I did not enjoy delaying the stuff at all, but eh, it was worth it, at least now it's finished.

Thanks for participating, everyone!  :metal

Congrats Ruslan, I really don't remember much from that Need song since you sent it to me in my first, apart from the spoken words at the end, but I guess I should revisit it and maybe the album.

I'm glad I could introduce you to some cool new bands mike, especially Moron Police, since that was the one and only band I knew I just had to send in your roulette more than anyone else's. Glad it stuck with you.

It's a shame I didn't win with a write-up like that, but I'm glad anyway you loved that track so much. The entire album is amazing and I've made a habit out of listening to it when it snows for the first time in a winter. It's absoultely perfect for that mood, somewhere between calm, euphoric, cold and slightly depressing. I love how that album makes me feel such conflicting emotions at the same time.

Congrats to Evermind, though. I'll go check out that track, since you loved it so much, just out of interest.

You were so close, man.

Train, I started to check out the rest of the album and laughed my balls off at "T-Bag your grandma".Jesus.

Haha yeah that's not the subtlest of album openers.

I've taken quite an appeal towards "Steve Jobs Is Dead, But I'm Not" and "Go Home, Bitch!" lately
