Hello and welcome! This is my first try at a survivor and what better way to start than with my all time favorite band. Here's how it's going to work: the top two songs from each album will automatically advance to the finals while the third place song form each album will make it to the consolation round. The top three songs from the consolation round will then advance to the finals. I will not be running this in chronological order. I will instead be running it in reverse order of my favorites so that the next album up will be a surprise every time except for the last. I will be starting with non album tracks which will include the four Beyond Magnetic songs, the two songs written special for S&M, I Dissapear, and Lords of Summer. To prevent multiple tiebreaker rounds, I will not vote in a tiebreaker round and will use my absent vote as a second tiebreaker in the event that the first tiebreaker round ends in a draw. Before the start of the consolation round, I will be running an album survivor as well. Please refer to this thread if you have any questions or suggestions. Have fun and may the best song win!

Awesome! Will be participating in pretty much everything (though maybe not in Reload and St. Anger). I love most of the non-album songs, haven't listened to the Beyond the Magnetic songs in quite a while but I remember liking at least two of them.

This may be chance to learn post-Black Album albums better. I know few songs from every of those albums but it's not cool to vote for song you don't know. But I'm in for first 5 albums for sure.

In all seriousness though, Lulu isn't technically a Metallica album. It's a Lou Reed album with Metallica as his backing band. Since it's not full on Metallica and none of the songs stand a chance in the full tournament, I elected not to include it.

Ride is probably my #5 right now but I don't like Death Magnetic :\

I do wanna make a point that the distance between my number 1 and 6 is minute while the separation between 6 and 7 through 9 is immense. I love Ride the Lightning but the problem is how short it is. Most albums have one or two tracks that are mediocre but the album is long enough (50 minutes or more) that those tracks don't seem like a big deal. At only 44 minutes in length, Ride the Lightning is too short to compensate for what I believe to be mediocre songs (Trapped Under Ice and Escape) and the fact that they're consecutive tracks on the album makes it worse. That's almost 10 minutes of a 40 minute album that's subpar. As good as the rest of the album is (and the other six songs are phenomenal), having a quarter of an album be way below the standard of the rest of it is a problem. Once again though, I do love this album. It's just the glaring drop in quality for a good chunk of it that puts it below five other albums that I feel don't have that problem.

TBA? :lol Your album rankings get more and more interesting. Should be an interesting album for DTF to rate as well. I personally think some of the "deeper cuts" on the second part of the record are better than some of the hits.

Honestly, I'm starting think that most of their albums are close enough in quality that I won't be too upset about most likely rankings... but I probably won't be happy about where KEA, which I rate below everything but SA, ends up.

Since in the last posts everyone is annoying each other expressing an opinion someone else doesn't agree with, I'll join in: if it was up to me, I'd have My Apocalypse WINNING the survivor.

I love Metallica's instrumentals. I don't think S&R is quite as good as Ktulu, Orion or TLITD, but I think it's worthy of a place next to those three. But I suppose it was obvious in the RTL survivor that many people do not share my feelings about the instrumentals.
My Apocalypse will definitely be my first vote. Though it's not a bad song, it's definitely the weak spot on the album. But nothing on DM is among my least favorite Metallica songs. Aside from SA, those are all on Reload and KEA.

But it DOES matter.. I not only think is the undisputed number one, but also that is far, far... FAR better than both MoP and AJFA.. Besides a couple of pretty good songs, I don't get the love for them..

I agree with that on MOP. I think that one is probably their least melodic album and really just doesn't have as much to love as its massive reputation would make it seem. I think Orion is a stellar track. And I like Thingy a lot. The rest aren't bad, per se, but this album is not nearly as good as either its predecessor or its successor.
I'd put AJFA probably just above DM. I think both are really good albums that also have their problems. But One and To Live Is To Die are both among their best tracks, while S&R and The Unforgiven III aren't quite at their level (very good, though).

One record is so iconic it became the first metal album to be preserved in the U.S. Library of Congress while the other is often considered to be the worst metal album ever made. They aren't even close.

Yeah, no way I'd put SA anywhere but last. But MOP is definitely very far from being their best album IMO.

Fortunately, I don't get carried away by what most people think or what any library has to say about an album of music.. ;)
I think MoP is a great song, and Battery is good.. Well, the same goes respectively to SA and Frantic.. The difference is that I don't like any of the rest of the songs in MoP, while I enjoy a couple in SA (DW and SMA).. Having said that, I don't feel SA is clearly better than the other one; they ARE actually very close IMO.. Idc about what the world has to say about it.. :eek

While it changes nothing about the actual point (which is that other people's opinions shouldn't affect your own at all), the U.S. Library of Congress—one of the world's largest libraries—preserves material of cultural significance, and does not apply that singularly to books.

These last two albums are gonna be very hard for me to judge because there are so many songs between them that I want to see in the finals but there's only room for two to three from each album. There's songs like The Shortest Straw and Damage Inc. that I think deserve a spot in the finals but they may not even make it to the consolation round. It's gonna be difficult to see most of these songs on both remaining albums get eliminated.

That's how I feel about Justice. I would love Dyers Eve to go to the finals, but it's going to be hard to argue why One, To Live is to Die, or Blackened shouldn't.

AJFA is the odd one since Frayed Ends is my favorite there but it's maybe the least favorite song of the album for most.

I was thinking of running a mini survivor for the new album after a month of it being out so everyone has time to digest it. If enough people show interest, I may do both and run the first one right after the finals end.

Thank you for running it! Master is a very good choice as champion :metal pity I couldn't get Creeping Death on the podium however!

I'm glad that there's someone else who likes III the most.
They should do a medley, starting part II after two verses of the first, or something like that. And ending up with the last chapter.
But that takes away the first song's solo which is one of Kirk's best.

Then you'll definitively not like the medley I've done of the three songs the last time I did a Metallica compilation for my mp3 player:
- Only first verse and chorus of the original
- Two verses and choruses of the second mixing it with the end of the song
- Out of the ending comes the last part of the third one, the final chorus only.

So later today I am gonna start up a Hardwired...To Self Destruct survivor just for fun. I figured with the album out for a month today, people have had the time to digest it and can fairly judge what they like and don't like. The new version of Lords of Summer will be included making it a 12 round survivor with 13 songs.

Because if for some reasons You cannot, I can do it with honor and pleasure :) Please don't be offended with my question that I want to take Your place or sth like that ;) I just like DTF survivors :)

I didn't participate in the Hardwired's survivor because I was still listening and processing the album back then and didn't want to be influenced by these results, as small as could've been the impact of them on me anyways..
Now, this bump is actually making me see that the only one song that is my clear favorite from the album was the actual winner of the survivor.. So wow to that.. Song is too obscure and yet so damn great, weird in a good way and melodically epic just like everything I happen to adore from the Metallica's songs I like the most..
Also, I think it's safe to say that HtSD is their finest work to date, right behind DM.. :metal

I was actually thinking about doing it again starting in September. If there's enough people interested in participating again, I'll happily run it again. Now that I've actually run a full survivor and learned how it should be done, I feel like this one could be done better. Also, while I did run a HtSD survivor, I would love to see how the album fairs against the rest of their discography and how the new songs do in the full survivor.

There's a Metallica podcast that started up earlier in the year, "Metal Up Your Podcast", that's been pretty cool. They've done album by album breakdowns, Top 10 Song lists, etc. The two hosts are touring musicians. So, they have a little different insight than your typical fans.
I'd be down for a Survivor.
