Title: Great Performances In Disappointing Movies
Post by: Accelerando on March 20, 2016, 02:41:59 PM
Thought this would be an interesting topic. Sometimes a strong acting performances can make the unbearable ever-so-briefly watchable. What are you favorite acting performances in otherwise bad or disappointing movies?

Morgan Freeman in Street Smart immediately comes to mind for me

Michael Fassbender in Prometheus.

So much this. He was amazing. The movie was kinda meh, though I enjoyed most of it. Not as much as him.

What's a nice cage pillow ?

It's a magical thing. But seriously, even in the most badly written movies that have not a chance of being good, that man gives it his all. And sometimes more :lol
The one exception maybe being Left Behind. The whole thing was very meh. But then again, how could it have been any good?

Also the actor who played Charlie was *ok* but you spend the whole movie thinking " why didn't they just get Tom Hardy ? "

Matchstick Men is one of the best, but I'm biased because I love movies about grifters.

I really liked Matchstick Men as well.  I thought Nicholas Cage was the shit back in the early 2000s, but like someone else said, quality control filter is seriously lacking.

Has he not paid off his debts yet ?

He has done a few critically acclaimed movies here and there. Like "Joe".

he's got quite a few bangers:

Con Air
Face/Off
The Rock
Valley Girl
Adaptation
Moonstruck
Snake Eyes
Lord of War
Rumble Fish
Raising Arizona
National Treasure
Leaving Las Vegas
Peggy Sue Got Married

unfortunately there's a lot of mash as well.

Loved him in Kick-Ass as Big Daddy..

National Treasure is more mash than banger for me, but it was kinda silly fun. Did we get a signature freak out in that one? Maybe it was the second one, can't remember..  :D

the part where he's burning is pretty weird tho, how he calls out.  its not quite 'not the bees' level but its close.

Those Nicolas Cage movies are great (some of them, anyway) in spite of him, not because of him.

you take that back!

but yeah nah seriously I don't get why people hate on him so much.  I reckon he's quality.

Cage has a very campy style that a lot of people really like...or dislike.  I don't mind him sometimes, as long as the film is entertaining, but put his acting style in a poorly written film and it's just ugly.

Yikes! That was a fun movie, and he was the worst part of it for me. Though I do enjoy "COULD WE GET A CUP OF COFFEE IN HERE?"

See, I thought it was an OK movie, and he was easily the best.  He held it all together.

"How in the name of ZEUS'S BUTTHOLE did you get out of your cell?!  I only ask because in our current situation, well, it could prove to be useful information. MAYBE!"

There's probably still more juice in the Nicolas Cage tank yet  :), but here's a couple of other suggestions:

  • Ryan Reynolds in Blade Trinity.

First thing i'd seen him in. Him doing rom-coms after that didn't seem right.

He's been in a few superhero movies now. Blade 3, X Men Whatever , Green Lantern and Deadpool as far as I'm aware.

Whilst I did enjoy the movie I also have no desire to see it again.
