Title: Your least favourite, popular Dream Theater song?
Post by: Gh101 on February 29, 2016, 04:37:45 PM
Is there a song by the band, that is popular but for whatever reason, no matter how hard you try you just can't get into it, for me, this has to be A Change of Seasons. I've given it plenty of listens, and I can appreciate the musicianship but I just don't like it that much.

(I don't mean songs like, You Not Me, or Status Seeker)

A Change of Seasons is one of my favorite songs by anyone--back when Dream Theater could write long songs.

For me, Octavarium or Illumination Theory probably.  I hate the forced epic-fests.

Panic Attack is popular due to Guitar Hero, but I don't think it's that good.

There's a few that people generally like but I don't enjoy all that much. Space Dye Vest would have to be the biggest offender though. People worship this as Kevin Moore's masterpiece and one of the all time great Dream Theater songs, but I feel that it's among their worst.

I think Count of Tuscany is popular right?

I really don't get that song at all, save for maybe the guitar swell parts.

I'd say for me it is Metropolis. Probably one of DT's biggest fan favorite songs, but it doesn't do much for me.

Breaking All Illusions come to mind. It's a good song, but i wouldn't rank it anywhere near top 10 DT songs like most. It isn't even my favorite song on ADTOE (i prefer Bridges, Lost and Outcry over it).

Count of Tuscany, Illumination Theory and Stream of Consciousness do nothing for me too.

If I HAD to pick one as "worst offender" it would probably be The Ministry of Lost Souls. I think it's the one bad song on an album of at least passable music. I actually love most of the rest of it, but I know most people's opinions will be the opposite of mine: they LOVE that song, but HATE the rest of Systematic Chaos. I just don't care for the "story," and to me there is nothing special or original about the music

There are a few songs I skip every time despite most people seeming to gush over them:

Constant Motion
Sacrificed Sons
Octavarium
The Dark Eternal Night
A Nightmare to Remember
The Count of Tuscany

Six Degrees. I was so amazed at the awesomeness of the first disc when it came out, I couldn't get over how mediocre the title track felt to me. And it didn't help I never had the time or patience to try and get in to it. I thought when Score came out (and seeing it on the setlist was a huge disappointment for me) that it was now or never when it came to liking that song. And I am still stuck on never.

Maybe it's me, but I don't really see TMoLS as really being a popular DT song. That said, I agree that the song is nothing great, altho the second half is far better than the first half that just seems to drag with it's overdramatic melody.

I already several songs listed that I wouldn't call popular, at least for what I'd count here (although they're songs that I personally love and would call underrated if anything).

The big one that others have said is ACOS. I do like the song, but it's one of their weaker epics imo, and it would struggle to make my top 50. The other big one for me is LTL. Again, I like the song, but for me it's the weak link of IaW rather than the standout. And Scarred.

For the most part I love most of DT's popular stuff, and love a lot of the less popular stuff more than most.

Learning to Live. It is good, but it just sounds too dated for me. Like wearing black leather pants while playing that late 1980s/early 1990s bass groove type of datedness.

My comments on the songs of Division 1 of DT the League as they are ranked right now (11 rounds so far):

1. A Change of Seasons (good but not the best ever)
1. Octavarium
3. Breaking All Illusions
3. Learning to Live
3. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
3. Take the Time (doesn't deserve to be that high)
7. Metropolis
7. Scarred
9. Finally Free (a bit overrated, but okay)
10. Lines in the Sand
11. Home
11. Illumination Theory
11. Surrounded
14. The Count of Tuscany
14. Voices
16. In the Name of God
17. Trial of Tears
18. The Spirit Carries On
19. The Glass Prison
19. In the Presence of Enemies
21. Endless Sacrifice (can't believe it's on first division!)
21. Fatal Tragedy
23. Beyond This Life (it would be second division for me, but okay)
23. Bridges in the Sky
23. Space-Dye Vest (not in my top 50, even before TA)
26. Under a Glass Moon (this one is bottom tier!!)
27. Disappear
27. The Mirror
29. Misunderstood
30. Blind Faith
30. Lifting Shadows off a Dream (this belongs to the third division)
30. Stream of Consciousness

By the way, the only one that should be considered popular even if it's not in the list is Pull Me Under, their only hit. I think it's fair it doesn't appear in this division.

I think I can say my least favorite of their popular songs is Under A Glass Moon.

Under a Glass Moon
Voices
Space-Dye Vest
Blind Faith
In The Name of God
Breaking All Illusions
Disappear
Lines in the Sand
Trial of Tears

Honorable Mentions to ACOS, Illumination Theory, ITPOE and Outcry.

I have 2:

1) The Glass Prison: I love the Intro, the arpeggios and the main riff, but all the rest is extremely boring and forgettable...the vocal lines and the instrumental section have no inspiration at all, and are way too long.

2) The Dance of Eternity: it just sounds like a "remake"of the instrumental section of Metropolis Pt I and an attempt to break the world record of time signature changes in a song. But, apart from the "5 over 4" riffs and the ragtime section there are no exciting melodies or ideas, it just sound like a long odd-time practice exercise.

The Spirit Carries On is easily my #1 choice for this. The only part I actually like is the sentence starting with "Move on, be brave".

Also Lifting Shadows off a Dream seems to be popular according to the survivor, that's one of my least favorite songs aswell.

We all seem to have a different view of which songs are popular. :lol

Going only by the DT league listing (so far) that fischermasamune posted and taking only the top 20 from there, the ones I'm not really very interested in are:

Scarred - it's an ok song but really does very little for me.
Surrounded - has some really nice stuff, but not one I find especially exciting.

That's probably it. Though some others that are super high up in the ranking, like Metropolis, I don't love as much as a lot of the fanbase. I still find it a great song though, so I don't think that counts.

Octavarium is a mistery to me. Sometimes I believe Portnoy has about one hundred and eleven usernames here and that he keeps coming here just to vote for this song on the DT League. Itīs not even epic - itīs overlong. Itīs not even grandiose like IT or CoS (of course the mixing they were doing at that time does not help). The lyrics that Portnoy wrote, mentioning books and albums he likes, I just canīt NOT hate them.

Of course there are many songs that are popular but that are just ok (or meh) for me - Count of Tuscany, Blind Faith - but at least those songs I can see why people love them. But Octavarium is a bore... itīs really a mistery. Iīll try to listen to a live version of it, maybe Iīll get what the fuzz is all about.

The song has won 71 straight regular season matches, and it's going for a 3rd straight championship. The thing is really loved around here, MP clones or otherwise.  :lol

Octavarium is about as epic as they come. I don't find ACOS to be grandiose at all, and IT feels like retread of the older epics, but not as good. No mystery or conspiracy here; Octavarium is just a great song. :tup

The big stand out for me is Octavarium.  Intro is ok, if "inspired by" Pink Floyd a little too much for me.  The end of the song is spine-tingling stuff from JP in particular, truly epic.  The stuff in the middle though is just plain dull for me, some of the dullest stuff they've done in my opinion.  Usually I'm just not prepared to wade through 20 min just to get to JP's solo at the end.

There's songs lower down that list like Disappear which I'm not keen on either but yeah, if Octavarium is joint top as their best song ever then that's a big no for me.

8V the song for me. By a mile. It should be a song I love with that Floydian intro and influences splattered all over the place but
it does nothing for me. And as far as that album goes, I played the living crap out of it for months and my daughter loved it too
but when I try to go back to it I never make it through the whole thing. I hear DT coming too close to their influences and it
hasn't aged well for me.

If by popular you mean singles/videos released by the band, I'm not big on "Constant Motion."

If by popular you mean among DT die-hards, I don't think "Metropolis Pt 1" is the gold standard that many think it is.  It's a freaking great song, don't get me wrong, but I'd put it in bottom tier of Images of Words.

Do we mean popular in this forum, or popular in the general public? Because if it's the latter, then only Pull Me Under qualifies

Anyway..

The Spirit Carries On
The Count of Tuscany
Illumination Theory

Octavarium the song has some silly parts, but it's still good. It will always be behind ACoS for me, but it's good!

I'd say The Great Debate. It's not that I hate it or anything, it's just that the song doesn't click with me. Kinda like a girl which you understand how other like her, but she just doesn't appeal to you in any way.

And in case it's popular... The Dark Eternal Night. I loathe that song twice as much as you all loathe The Ministry of the Lost Souls.

The one that immediately leaps to mind for me is Six Degrees, I've just never really enjoyed it that much for some reason. Same with the album as a whole really and it actually annoys me that I don't like it as much as others do when I regularly see it ranking so highly on people's lists  :lol I really wish that one day it'll finally click with me - either the song itself or the whole album - but I doubt it'll happen now. Probably doesn't help that I've always seen the title track as more of a collection of individual songs, but lets not go down that road again  ;D

Good summation for me. Though I would add the lyrics are rather good. Those guest vocals are terrible but for some reason the majority of people seem to like them. And that intro is bad and goes on way too long.

Briefly, as to 'Six Degrees':  treat it as a vinyl album.  Give parts 1-4 a listen, and then come back to it later on for the remainder.  Parts 5-8 would probably be my favorite 'side' of their discography.  I had just started following the band when this came out.

I wanted so much to like IT.  And there is so much to like in it, but it doesn't jell for me as one piece.

Of the supplied list, there are many that I've snipped out segments that I don't like, so they wouldn't be in my top 30.  The rap in 'Glass Prison', choruses in UAGM and 'Sand'.  I love the intro and the ending to 'Count', but deleted the middle vocals.  I much prefer the edits of 'Lie' and 'Home', but don't like 'Mirror/Lie' because together because they are too heavy for my liking.  Yet I like 'Enemies Pt 1' and 'Constant Motion'.  Go figure.

'Pull Me Under' not in Division 1.  Interesting.

I think some of DT's longer songs fail to hit the mark. Illumination Theory and In the Presence of Enemies have never done anything for me, and tbh the only good section in that 40+ minutes of music is the Dark Master chorus. Both just feel like really long songs rather than epics

In the Name of God fits the bill as well. When I try to think of the various sections of that song I can never quite understand how it manages to fill 14 minutes. I also think it has one of the worst choruses in their catalogue and LaBrie does not sound good on it. The riff in one of the verses is cool however, and the bass line underneath the noodly-woodly section always gets me going, but the actual soloing goes on for way too long and seems to exist just to fill time.

I'm not quite sure where people stand on The Shattered Fortress and Outcry but I've always felt they're pretty uninspiring.

Also not sure on Losing Time/Grand Finale, is that considered popular? I've always thought it was an uninteresting way to end a great song and LaBrie's voice is a bit meandering on it if that makes any sense

Lines in the Sand. I don't know what's really amazing on that song besides JP's solo. Maybe is about the guest vocals or the DS's noise/stuff.

Good summation for me. Though I would add the lyrics are rather good. Those guest vocals are terrible but for some reason the majority of people seem to like them. And that intro is bad and goes on way too long.

I didn't realise this was a popular song with fans, but it's definitely a 'skipper' for me. Agree on the guest vocals - not a fan of those at all.

I jump on the "Lines in the Sand is not so great" bandwagon as well. Good lyrics, live it works, the slow section is beautiful, but all in all, I consider it one of the lesser epics of DT.

If "Lines In The Sand" is a "popular" DT song, then it is  easily my least favourite.  Doug Pinnick ruins it for me.  I like most of FII, too (and REALLY like the "Director's Cut" of the album) but this song is one I skip.

Not the hugest fan of Burning My Soul, The Great Debate or Never Enough either.    I will say, though, it is a real struggle to find songs I don't like; even the ones I name, it's not the whole song but just parts that I don't like.  99 times out of 10, it's the vocals I don't like.  I don't like the guest vocals on LITS, I don't like the chorus vocals on BMS, I don't care for growl vocals in general, so...

I actually don't mind Forsaken too much. I see it as a gateway song that has the potential to attract new fans. It's one of the songs on youtube that I remember discovering and making me want to find out more about DT.

I definitely wouldn't say it is representative of DT as a whole though (or anywhere close) ..

Octavarium, no question. The intro drags, the first two sections are ok, Full Circle is just meh, Intervals is amazing and then Razor's Edge might be the single biggest letdown in DT's discography.

A Change of Seasons (I do like some of the instrumental parts a lot though)
Octavarium (other than the synth solo, continuum solo, and Razor's Edge which are perfect, this drags on waaayyy too long for me)
And most of the 12-step Suite

I doubt if it would help. I have almost three times as many as that, I've been a big fan for over 20 years, I read TONS of DT-related posts before I even HEARD of DTF, and I'm STILL trying to figure it out.

For example: I'm still trying to get my head around how much HATE there is on here for the first album WDaDU.
There are TONS of other examples I could come up with, but you get he idea...

The orchestral break is by far my favourite part of the song too, even though the flow in and out of that section is weak. There are other cool sections of the song that I like too, but overall a patchy and cliche epic that doesn't live up to many of their others.

Not sure what's so hard to understand.

Even if you don't think the songwriting is largely amateurish (which I do), the production makes the songs sound like shit and Charlie Dominici's voice is awful.

I mean, there are lots of opinions that I can see being strange, but I don't see how in the world this one qualifies.

I don't mean that the orchestra sounds bad by itself. I meant that it doesn't fit with the rest of the song. I think it would have sounded better if they had done something else with that part of the song. Even having the band play a more "rock and roll" version of that same piece, or play along WITH the orchestra would have been an improvement. But other than that, it isn't a bad piece of music.

While I agree, as I have said several times before, that the production DOES suck, I still think the songs for the most part are as good as a lot of what they did after, and some of these songs are even better than some of their later stuff. And as I have also said before: I have been on other sites before I was ever on this one, and there were at least a few people who said that they thought it was their best album, and part of the reason for that was Charlie. I don't agree with that opinion, and while I DO agree with what Portnoy said about his voice not being strong enough for them to keep him in it for the long haul, like they did with James, I don't think his voice was THAT bad. I actually thought he sounded pretty good on a few of the songs, such as Afterlife and Only a Matter of Time. Also there are a lot of people on here who like at least four or five of the individual tracks from it.

Though there is no song I "hate" or even "don't like AT ALL" by DT, there are some songs I don't seem to like as much as others do.

The Killing Hand (always felt that song being somewhat unfinished)
Lifting Shadows (they have done tons of better ballads)
Surrounded (except the CIM version with the "Mother" part, that is awesome. But this song with the I&W sound is just too 90 for me.)

Not sure if it's "popular", but I never liked Through Her Eyes, due to the drum loop. It could have been a cool bombastic ballad a la Spirit Carries On but as it is, it's just very cheesy to me.

The second half of the song is gold.  It's the drawn out vocals on the main verses that I find really annoying.   It's OK, but not worth the hype it gets.  And certainly my least favorite from SFAM.

LitS is a really good choice too.   Never cared for it.    ...and I was looking forward to that too because we got the leak that Dug was making an appearance, and I was a really big KX fan.   Sadly, it was one of those things where the reality didn't live up to the ideal.

Without having a list of DTs popular songs handy, it's hard for me to answer the question. I tend to think that Octavarium is DTs most overrated song, in that most fans rate it very highly, and I think it's definitely not deserving of the high ratings that it usually receives. But in general I'd much rather listen to Octavarium than TMOLS or Sacrificed Sons, both of which I see as being popular songs, and neither of which I particularly like.

The three I would say are PMU, TSCO and Metropolis. I actually love the studio version of PMU, but live they can never pull it off as well (especially the intro); and I could do without seeing it again, having seen it performed live numerous times.

TSCO is a great ballad but live it's overplayed. Could stand to do without ever seeing it in the live set again.

I just don't get all the love for Metropolis - it's a decent song, but nothing that grabs me the way that LtL does. And it's another one I could do without ever hearing again live unless they change it up again as they've done on some previous tours.

I would agree on PMU and TSCO. I love both still, but PMU was a huge grower and didn't stand out to me for a while just because of how awesome I&W is. TSCO is really good as well, but also suffers from being one of the weakest songs on an incredible album. Of the handful of times I've seen DT live, TSCO was also the only song where I didn't hesitate to take my bathroom break.

Personally, I'd say Space-Dye Vest and The Looking Glass. The first I feel somewhat kills Awake's momentum and ending, coming off of Scarred's fade-out and such, and it features my least favorite KM lyrics. It's a moody, mellow song and a good song, just too angsty for me and a bit less involving than their other ballads. The latter isn't as much a fan-favorite as others listed. It's divisive, but those who like it seem to really like it. Unfortunately, it's one of the few DT songs I will always skip, I just find it boring and the things I like I can find in other songs phrased similarly but much better. Too many Rushisms and the solo is too reminiscent of ToT without being as good.

Ha! No clue as to how many times I've listened to the songs on CD/iPod, but your post inspired me to go thru the setlists of all the shows I've seen, and no surprise, TSCO was at the top of the list, having seen it 23 times (all in complete form). PMU was second highest with 17 times complete and 5 as part of a medley, and Metropolis was in third place with 14 times complete and 7 times as part of a medley. Surprisingly, some of the others that I've seen quite a few times are songs I (thus far) have not tired of seeing live, such as Home (16 times complete, once in single edit form), Endless Sacrifice (18 times complete) and Learning to Live (9 times complete, 12 times as part of a medley), altho that last one is my favorite DT song of all time, so I'm a bit biased towards it.  ;)

Was very interesting to see how many times I've seen certain songs - was surprising how many times I've seen some songs, and how few for other songs considering how many times I saw them and how often these songs were in the setlist.

Pretty much - the only difference was that the intro was abbreviated a little and had more of a Tool-vibe about it (which I really liked - would love to see that intro brought back again). As for why, it was simply to allow more time for other songs. You'll notice that this was only done during the second North American leg of World Tourbulence where they were co-headlining with Joe Satriani and had roughly 90 minutes of stage time.

My least favorite popular song would have to be Pull Me Under. I'm sure its not that popular now, due to the same reason I no longer like it. It was entirely over played. I always have a hard time picking my absolute favorite DT song. I can be certain it is usually between three songs: Metropolis 1, Learning to Live, and A Change of Seasons.
Those are also my top 3.

My least favorite popular song would have to be Pull Me Under. I'm sure its not that popular now, due to the same reason I no longer like it. It was entirely over played. The song got played on every tour for their entire career with MP. Jesus that song got old. I can't listen to it today without rolling my eyes.
While I agree that I don't ever need to hear PMU live again (unless they change it up significantly) and it's true that MP included PMU in the master setlist for every tour, by no means was it played at every show or even close to that. MP was always very good about mixing up the setlist and not having some songs that were played at every show (unlike Iron Maiden for instance, where 1/3 of their show is the same songs they play on every tour, or even Rush who has a handful of songs that always get played).

As for why, it was simply to allow more time for other songs. You'll notice that this was only done during the second North American leg of World Tourbulence where they were co-headlining with Joe Satriani and had roughly 90 minutes of stage time.
Thanks for the info! Makes sense. It just seemed weird to me, when considering that they extend a lot of songs/instrumentals.

I think it's really interesting to see the divergence of opinions in this thread, not only with to respect to what people count as a good or bad song, but also with respect to what counts as a popular DT song. The whole thing is a mess, and I like it!

A definition of popular would be the ones they've most played live; the ones featured in RB or GH; or the singles (especially the recent singles with music video).

Thanks! "Most" is kind of a vague term, but if that's the definition of "popular" that we're using here, then I'll still stick with my choice of Octavarium, but I'll change my second least favorite song to PMU, not because I dislike the song (on the contrary, I like it after all of these years), it's just that it's been played so many times live that surely it counts as one of the most popular songs, and out of the most popular songs it's the one I'd least like to see live. Except for maybe TSCO. Or TMOLS. Or...

While those criteria might work for many bands/artists, I don't necessarily think that they apply to DT's catalog for the most part. Certainly all of DT's epics fit none of those criteria you've listed, yet I would say most, if not all of them are popular among DT fans. Conversely, some songs are singles and have been played more often, but don't seem to be fan favorites.

So I think a better definition would be the ones that the fans in general love the most - the ones that are talked about most amongst the fans at concerts, in general conversation and online in such forums as this one.

I guess I meant popular amongst the general population, not hard-core forum-posting DT fans.

I get that, but first of all, this is being posted on a forum full of hard-core fans. On top of that, I'd still wager that most (non hard-core forum-posting) fans of DT are going to love the epics and other songs more than what the average joe fan of most mainstream bands/artists would. So I'd say my point still stands but feel free to disagree.  ;)
