Title: Good Comedy Sequels.
Post by: Kotowboy on February 25, 2016, 12:03:25 PM
So sequels to good comedy films are usually pony.

Name some good ones.

I vote for Hot Shots Part Deux.

I think Jump Street and Anchorman had great sequels just as worthy as the originals. Good call on Austin Powers, the 2nd one is my favorite of them all.

22 Jump Street was fantastic.

Hangover 2 was not, but I like it anyway, in spite of its obvious faults.

Ah Clerks 2 was a fantastic sequel, how could I forget. Wayne's world 2 was good as well. I enjoyed it.

Honestly it only came to mind because I can see my copy of Dogma from where I'm sitting :lol

I don't know what a Jump Street is, but I agree with you on Anchorman. I first saw the sequel, and a month or so later I saw the original. I think that the sequel is much better to me because Steve Carell had become an important actor on his own, so that might have been a factor in him having more/funnier scenes in the sequel.

Ah Clerks 2 was a fantastic sequel, how could I forget. Wayne's world 2 was good as well. I enjoyed it.
I was just going to say Wayne's World 2! I was 13 when I watched it for the first time, and I was a huge Aerosmith fan back then, so I did enjoy the movie (plus, you have Christopher Walken). I still think it's as good as the first one.

Like many of you said, I also think Austin Powers 2 is really good, but I didn't like the sequel's sequel. That was too much for me. I liked the Japanese twins at the beginning, though.

I can think of very few and they've been mentioned: Jump Street, Austin Powers and Clerks.

Comedy sequels suck so fucking bad the vast majority of the time.

I think both sequels to The Naked Gun are very good.

Also: recently I watched a cool 1978 movie called All You Need Is Cash, a fake documentary on a fake band called The Rutles (with cameos by George Harrison, Bill Murray and John Belushi amongst others). There was a sequel in 2002 called Can't Buy Me Lunch, which I think is very good (and includes cameos by Conan O'Brien, David Bowie and Jimmy Fallon, amongst others).

Airplane II

No. it's bad. not even by the same crew. Just the first film again.

Christmas Vacation is probably the best example.

Would you count Hot Fuzz and The World's End as sequels to Shaun of the Dead? Technically they're not, but there are connections.

Otherwise it's a thin line to pick from. I'd say Naked Gun 2 ½ is pretty great (not as good as the first), and a guilty pleasure of mine would be American Pie 2.

I was thinking about the Cornetto trilogy. They're just the same actors. Not in the same universe or characters. Not one recurring character.

The most you could call them is a thematic trilogy. A guy who has to overcome his shortcomings wins the day.

It's the same but it's still good.

I'm going to second Austin Powers and Wayne's World. Both perhaps even funnier than the first movie.

I really liked Zoolander 2, not as good as the first one but still had me laughing for the most part.

Hangover 2 was decent enough as well.

And I'll second The Naked Gun sequels, pretty funny

I gotta disagree with American Pie 3. ( Wedding ).

I thought it was not only painfully unfunny - the production values were *terrible* like they shat it out in a weekend.

Yeah, I watched it several times as a teenager - never liked it. I didn't care for the Reunion movie either.

From the direct-to-video ones, I only watched two. I didn't like those either, although I love the song at the end of Band Camp - played by Matt on bagpipes, the marching band, and later on by the original artist. I just learned it's called "Aeroplane" by Tal Bachman. Really simple, but lovely pop-rock song.

American Pie 3 had some fun gags, but what really bothered me is that they made Stifler even more annoying. Like, he was annoying in his own way in the first two films, but he still felt somewhat relatable and felt like a character. But in the third movie (and going forward) they pushed it to the max, and he played the character differently. That high pitched laugh, being even more crazy than before, to me it had the similar effect of over-acting. He was funny in the first two because he felt naturally crazy, but then it felt like he was trying too hard to be crazy, and it wasn't fun anymore.

They're pretty close, but I probably slightly prefer Christmas as well.  Its's crazy that the Christmas sequel was so good, while the European one was just okay and the Vegas one pretty bad.

Yes. For whatever reason, when I was younger I always assumed that the European vacation was the third film and Christmas the second, but nope. Would have made more sense if the first two were great and then it declined. I like all 4, but Christmas and the original are definitely the best. European is alright, Vegas has some laughs, but overall the worst.
