I nominate myself to start this thread. I love this song. Dream Theater has never had a shortage of songs with an epic feel. However, Our New World just gives them a TRIUMPHANT ANTHEM. It's short, very singable, does not have a long instrumental to break the triumphant vibe, and the lyrics and music both exude a very positive feeling. It's my music before I start my class. :lol
For me, it is like Van Halen's Jump or Journey's Don't Stop Believing. Not necessarily the artist's best work, but the song I would listen to to lift my spirits up.
-
Agreed. It's a great song on its own, but totally triumphant within the context of the story. I can actually picture standing up and cheering at the live show during this moment - hopefully no one gives me strange looks...
-
One of the highlights on the album, for me.

Yeah, actually, that is a really good take. I agree. And as I posted a week or so ago, the chorus may be the biggest ear-worm the band has ever written.

Just realized that Savior In The Square and Our New World are the same riffs....
How did I not notice that before

The only reason I noticed it is because I saw someone mention it in another thread :lol
-
I also find the song rather reminiscent of "The Way It Used To Be," which I think is a totally underrated gem.
-
Yes, it is fantastic.
-
Killer riff, that is actually harder to play than it sounds. JP is so good at taking simple ideas and adding a lot of ornamentation to make them more interesting.
I read in his Guitar World interview that he was going for a Van Halen-esque guitar tone and I think he surpassed his goal! Reminiscent of Jump or Panama, but still unique and awesome.
Rhythmically this is also typical of DT - deceptively simple. That last bar of 7/8 throws me off sometimes. I think that's the reason why sometimes a few vocal lines in this song sound "abrupt" for lack of a better word, but JLB pulls it off astonishingly well! :metal
-
It's funny that at first everyone was saying how great it was, then everyone turned on it saying how overrated it was, so I'm glad to actually have an appreciation thread for it, because I still absolutely love it. :lol
It reminds me of that About to Crash upbeat rock song vibe, which instantly drew me to it. I like the rockier riff reprisal of the Saviour in the Square intro, and it's got perhaps the most general lyrics of the album that work well out of context, which makes it a great anthem in its own right.

Best "song" on TA :metal
-
Why "song"? It's a song. :lol They're all songs.

You know what bit is cool? Just before the 3 minute mark coming out of the guitar solo when the guitar plays the one note version of the riff, and the bass comes in doubling it, then outro chorus.

Glorious moment. Applauded John Myung for that.
On, another note, Gabriel, play the music for us:

I love this song. Although, lyrically, the chorus is kind of bad since every line ends with "world", but in the context of the song it works. Great guitar solos too!

That moment is a bit odd. Sounds like a bit of a stumble.

Reading the OP and some of the posts in this thread I begin to see why people think this song is special, I like it but I don't share that appreciation for the 80's mainstream rock arena anthem Queen/Journey folksy sing along mode.
-
I love how Faythe and Gabriel essentially adopt Xander and the lyrics fully embrace it. I bet this will particularly be a character high point for Faythe in the context of a novel or a play.
-
Best song on the album, by a solid margin. It's care-free, and deceptively simple songwriting. Great performance by James.
-
This song is great. I can definitely hear the Van Halen type vibe, but when I first heard it I was reminded of a Mark Tremonti/Creed vibe. Love the chorus, too. That sounds like something I've heard before but can't put my finger on it at the moment.
-
Loved this song. JP really shines in this one.
-
I love it! Great song from start to finish! The VH vibe is gorgeous, as is the singing.

I get a Kings X vibe, anyone else?

1st verse gets to me every time. Very touching song.

Came here to say this. Yes. Very much so. Like something off of one of their late 80's, early 90's albums. Self titled? Dogman? maybe? Something around that area.
But officially throwing my hat in as this being my favorite song on this album. Such an amazing vibe from it. JP's riff gives me goosebumps.
-
I never got a King's X vibe from it. But if I had to vote whether it reminds me more of King's X or Van Halen, I would say King's X. I don't get people saying it's got a VH vibe. And that isn't a knock on Van Halen at all. Heck, they were one of my most-played bands when I was in high school. I just don't get a VH vibe from this song.
-
I'd say it has Eddie's FUCK album tone.

Nah, Ty Tabor's tone all the way. A bit more rich and modern... but still. With that little slide chop-y walk in the phrasing?
This song in particular is what it reminds me of.

Oh, okay. Yeah, now that you point out that particular song, I can see it. Good catch.
-
it will be a world hit single !
-
Yea this should be a single and video for sure. Even outside of the story, it's still a positive song.
-
The Van Halen comparison I made is not really about the sound or style of the song, but more of this song being anthemic, which VH excelled in.
-
yeah...
Been eargasming over this song all evening. In headphones with it cranked all the way up.
Last song to do this for me was Count of Tuscany. There are other songs on this release... but dis one is mine. :heart
That riff... that drop into the chorus.. the harmony. Unf~ yes. Thank you.

Stupid question time. Is the first solo guitar or keys?

@ 1:21? Most definitely Guitar :metal
-
Oddly enough, when I heard the small part of it in the trailer video it left me pretty much indifferent. But now that I heard the whole song, it's definitely one of the standout track of the album for me. The main guitar riff and the chorus are awesome :metal

Yeah, maybe wishful thinking on my part that JR and JP alternated solos in this song. :lol The ending of the solo blending into the background keys fed to that fantasy.

You be craycray, Koko.

The deceptively simple ones are often my favourites. :tup DT has always been great at making more complex music sound accessibly simple.

Anyone worked out the tunings for this?
I've figured it out in just a drop D tune on a 6 string. Wondering if there's a more accurate way to play it though. When I try to use some the fingerings he uses on the MB demo vid, doesn't seem to work out right.

Looks to be down a whole step rather than drop D. He's playing that first power chord with the pinky on the 7th of the D string, and it's sounding an A rather than a B.
-
If this is the next single, Roadrunner should really push to get this one some radio play.

Mmhm. I kiiiinda thought that as well. But didn't want to start detuning randomly without some input :lol
Ah well... sounds pretty close with a drop D. Missing a bit of depth on some of the chords but sounds great playing along with it. First JP riff I've been this driven to figure out in a while.

This should help. He plays the riff in this video....But he could just be playing the riff in whatever that guitar happens to be tuned to.
Drop D sounds different to D std.

Yeah. gotta fake the sound of the 7th string though with that Drop D. Don't have one of those >.>
-
I was thinking it had more of a Journey kind of feel off of one of their newer albums like ARRIVAL or REVELATIONS.
-

It's 100% drop D in this video.
-
You're right. I can't count.

I can sorta hear that.
-
But holy crap that guitar is perfectly intonated.
If I played all those high double-stops on my guitars they'd all be a hair out of tune.

Of course it is. It was probably pulled off the setup table and handed right to JP just before they hit record >.>
Although the better quality instrument, the better it holds intonation. Going from an $600.00 Fender to a $xxxx.xx dollar Gibson solved so many issues with that :lol
Created a different one with my wife... 0_o
But worth it
-
How well intonated is your wife ?
( insert your own G string or "D" jokes here )

Well played and timed perfectly.
