Title: Serious DTF split-screen project
Post by: DarkLord_Lalinc on January 28, 2016, 09:53:22 PM
Hey, guys.

This has probably been talked every now and then in here but I would really like to formally make it happen. How awesome would it be to record a cool tribute to DT using the skills of people from the forum?

I'm a keyboardist, and I'm up to produce and mix the whole thing (I mix music for a living, so I'm really at home doing such task). Are there any interested musicians? We could do a poll later on to decide which pieces it would be really nice to cover. It would be awesome it we did something from The Astonishing, given it's still something incredibly new!

So far, the members who are in for this are:

splent: Vocals
DarkLord_Lalinc: Keyboards/Production
Nihil-Morari: Keyboards
Pragmaticcircus: Keyboards/Guitar/Bass (as per needed)
IDontNotDoThings: Bass
home: Guitar/Keyboards
Lynxo: Guitar
ASacrificedSon: Drums
elite: Guitar

Note: The idea is to record more than one song. It would be nice having some diversity by having different members come in and contribute in different ways.

Once the 'first' 5 musicians are set, we're putting the songs in a poll so we can decide what are we gonna do.

EDIT:

FIRST SONG: Another Day.

DarkLord_Lalinc: Keyboards - Strings
home: Keyboards - Piano
ASacrificedSon - Drums
splent - Vocals
IDontDoNoThings - Bass
Lynxo: Guitar

Sounds cool.

I can contribute as a bass player. I can't promise I'll be any good, but I can try. :loser:

I'd love to do vocals.

You should start doing some things, man. :metardica:

Hey, in all seriousness, it's extremely cool you're up for the challenge!

I'd love to do vocals.

And I would love if you sang. I love your voice! I watch your facebook clips all the time, splang.

On a related note, given most of us are from different parts of the world, the interested musicians need to have a decent recording setup for this to work at a professional level. It doesn't have to be all recorded in a nice and big recording studio, but a good mic (in case of vocals or a guitarist/bassist recording through an amp) should do the trick.

I'd love to participate! I play piano/keyboard. I can't play all of Jordan's crazy sections so I am not sure of how much use I can be. Still, great idea!

We can easily get you an easier part of one of the songs! Thank you for your interest!

If we're to make this happen soon we need at least a drummer and a guitar player. Any volunteers?

Thanks, I appreciate that.

My wife teaches at a music studio that has some adequate recording equipment. I'm not 100% sure if I can hook a computer up to it, but I'm 90% sure there's a way. I just have to get permission to mess with it. Otherwise I'll have to wait until I can get up to visiting my parents where my dad has a pretty good setup, but I don't know when that will be.

I think so far the one I think we can pull off from the new one is "Chosen".  But I haven't heard anything after that yet.

That's one easy, and it would really be awesome to pull something off The Astonishing. We still need a bass player and a guitar player.  :D

So I heard TA for the first time earlier today, & I waited for a while to let it sink in, but I think the one I'd be most keen to cover would be A Life Left Behind, so I guess that would be my recommendation.

Also:
We still need a bass player and a guitar player.  :D

I'LL DO IT :neverusethis:

I could do guitar parts if they are not too difficult... I just saw tabs and a cover of A Tempting Offer and something like that certainly possible for me to play. I will have to figure out how to play it on a 6 string (I have top heavy strings which still sound good when turned down), but that won't be too big a problem.

So if you're up for doing guitar (home), does that mean Darklord_Lalinc is doing keyboards again? Either way, we still need a drummer.

DarkLord maybe put something in the OP with the members of the project (so far). We can list possible songs there too.

Here's a short list I've come up with of pieces that wouldn't be too overwhelming to those who want to participate (I say let's see how this goes with a relatively "easy" song, and if all goes well we can choose something a little more difficult).

Another Day
To Live Forever
The Spirit Carries On
Solitary Shell
I Walk Beside You
Chosen
Begin Again
Our New World (that may be a little tough, but it's on the easy side DT wise)

If we started with doing easy songs for samples, I wouldn't really have a problem with that, just as long as the final thing isn't so easy that it's uninteresting (to play). I'll start going down this list when I get time & I'll post back here ASAP.

Come on drummer and better guitarist than me  :hat
Perhaps we should post something in the DT discussion subforum, I think a lot more people check that subforum.

By the way I can certainly play all the songs above on piano without problem (if I can figure out the notes, though I already have sheet music for some of them) Guitar would be a bit more difficult for some :\

Act 2: Nicolas wakes up in a glass prison next to the count (of Tuscany) Overhearing the sound of the NOMACS they are able to both summon and then sell their souls to the dark master....

I've just recently set up a home studio so I would be all for doing this. :) I'm a guitar player and would be happy to help out, as long as the song isn't one of their crazier ones! To Live Forever might be fun!
I have purchased both Cubase and Positive Grid Bias FX so I definitly have the means to get a great tone out of it. :metal

I can do complex guitar, bass and piano if it's needed. And for a bonus, I can help create our fan concept.

How far will this go though? If it's good can we sell it on CD (after copywrite stuff)?

The idea is to make a compilation of various songs, played by different people if we have the response! And have more than one person per instrument if the song benefits from it, as well. So, for example, if we cover a song from The Astonishing it would be awesome if I play the piano parts while you play the orchestral parts. Would you like that? I'm counting you in!

I can do complex guitar, bass and piano if it's needed. And for a bonus, I can help create our fan concept.

It would be really awesome, you should totally create the fan concept. I'll include you also in the instrument list.

I don't know yet how far, depends on the response from both the musicians interested in this and the reception by the people of course. I guess we shall see *in Lord Bug voice tone*

ME!
I play the drums and I have a decent recording equipment! :)
Though one problem: I can't do those crazy crazy double kicks Mangini does on some songs and I'm not as fast as Mangini. He is too technical.
And The Dance of Eternity will be pretty messy....but I take drum lessons and have my own kit. It's not extravagant, but I have the basics.

No prob, it's good to have you on board! Technical details later on, such as recording formats, video, etc.

Well, for the time being we're complete!

Alright, here now comes the juicy stuff. Time to vote for which songs are we gonna cover! What do you guys propose? I had a poll in mind, in which everyone proposes one or two songs and we vote for the ones we want to cover the most. I'm open to suggestions, of course.

Also, your video needs to be recorded. I'm not asking for 4k quality video, but some nice video in the best def you possibly can afford should be enough!

Just a suggestion here...but maybe we should start with an easier song? Nothing brand new but something that everybody knows that isn't something like Dance of Eternity? Some suggestions from me:

Pull Me Under
To Live Forever
Strange Deja Vu

In order of preference:
A Life Left Behind
Three Days
Moment Of Betrayal
The Gift of Music
The Path That Divides
When Your Time Has Come

As for video, I'm not entirely certain as to what I can do with that. My family's video camera broke down a while ago & the only other options I have are my webcam (which is shit) & my iPod (which also has a shit camera). I'll see what I can do about it though.

Title: Re: Serious DTF split-screen project

I think we can eventually do something from the Astonishing... maybe we don't have to right away. I mean if the consensus is let's go astonishing I'm all for it, but maybe we should do something that's been out longer than 5 days and let the album soak in a bit (although getting something fresh and new out there would turn heads).

I agree with Lynxo though, let's start with something on the easy side (at least for DT). I'm all down with To Live Forever, as it's not on an official CD, and it's not super complex, but difficult enough we can do it.

I have to figure out how to synch video and recording as well :lol

Well I'm almost done with the first song on your list: Another Day (except for remembering the whole thing & playing the transition from chorus 2 to bridge (at full speed)), & after that I just need a way of recording it. To Live Forever was the 2nd song on that list, so I'd probably be doing that anyway.

Then again, I've only heard that song like twice, so I don't know how I'll go quite yet, but I'll take your word on it being easy (I do remember it being rather calm after all).

I have to figure out how to sync video and recording as well :lol

Try counting yourself in

Well, the most easy way is that someone creates a click track that everybody uses. And then in your case, you hook up your microphone to your computer and hit record on your computer and on your video camera (doesn't have to be at the exact same time, you could always sync it later).

Then, when you have a take you're happy with, just send a WAV file and a movie file (MP4 or something?) to whoever is in charge of putting it all together. :)

I'm not opposed to doing something from Astonishing, absolutely not! I just think that for our very first project, it might be more fitting to do something simple to get everybody familiar with the process. So instead of focusing on hunting down tabs (or learning by ear) we spend our time setting up the environment. :)

I agree that doing a short not too difficult song first would be a good idea. What about War Inside My Head? The keyboard part is very doable, I've got sheet music for it :p (and it's only 2 minutes)

I can record my keyboard directly into the computer so sound quality won't be a problem. I don't have an amazing camera, but if the quality of the one I have is too low, I can probably borrow something  :tup

I'm definitely interested in this, though I'm nursing a blister on my fretting finger so I'm not sure if I'll be available for the first song.  :tdwn

I have access to a home studio with video and can play on a 6/7-string and acoustic. I can't handle the crazy JP solos, but I'm decent at riffing and less complex solos (Lines in the Sand, Goodnight Kiss).

Alright, it's amazing this project is having so much feedback! But we need to post some guidelines.

1) The audio has to be professionally recorded. That means, there has to be some decent recording equipment involved (interfaces, microphones, DAW manipulation, etc.).
2) The video has to be recorded as well. If you have an amazing video camera feel free to use it, but don't worry if you're stuck with your iPhone camera (like me lols). Just try to make the video look the best it can (under good lightning conditions, good stabilisation, etc.).
3) You'll send all the files to me. I'll create a dropbox folder specifically for this project in which everyone involved will be able to post their material. I'll be in charge of putting it all together.
4) We need to decide the songs we're gonna record. There's been some really cool suggestions so far, but what would you think if I take all of these songs and put them in a poll? The poll shouldn't last more than a week to make this faster, so I require your cooperation to make it quick. Once we have 3 or 4 songs that we're all okay with, we start recording!
5) Please, record yourselves with the original track as a guideline. We're playing the songs in their album tempo. and that makes the most sense.

Once again, I'm open to any suggestions! And thank you for the interest! The response has been awesome so far by you guys. Let's make of this something amazing.

Is the audio quality in this video good enough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VY0LtZhCCE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VY0LtZhCCE) That's about the recording quality I can get (perhaps slightly better if I tweak some stuff or use another DAW or plug in)

Another Day would be a fun song to play!

By the way, does anyone know if the sheet music from Jammit is accurate?

I'm fine. Don't worry.

About videos and recording... is the expectation to do everything in one take? Like if I need more than one take, I know that will affect the video, so... I hope that makes sense.

you could perhaps record audio and video seperately, as in first record the audio track ( in multiple takes) and than make the video. But I am not sure if that's okay...

I don't have any problem with your tracks being a result of multiple takes. However, there has to be a video of every take so it can be edited.

Guitarist with good recording equipment checking in. Capable of doing quite a lot of DT's stuff, if needed. Well, basically anything except for crazy solo sections (Glass Prison, Home, Blind Faith, This Dying Soul). I have a 7-stringed guitar as well. I'd be happy to contribute if needed. If you want to see what I do, here is a random live video of my band (https://youtu.be/SRXiepXKK8Q). (I am the guitarist :) )

Anyway, good luck :D

Excellent! I'm counting you in. Very nice to know you have a 7-string, so you'll totally be considered for such songs that require it.

I was thinking earlier: What would you guys think if we made a poll to know who's gonna play each song? If we have multiple guitarists, we can make the whole thing much smoother.

The poll sounds like a really good idea. I have a few songs I'm eager to record.

If I don't get any dramas during recording, I should be uploading my part in around 15-30 minutes (waiting for my iPod & laptop to charge).

I have to double check with my wife and see if I can record at her music lesson studio at her work. If not, it'll be a bit before I can record as I don't have recoding equipment here at home. My dad does, but it'll be a couple months before I make it up to the 'rents

Uhm, I could do it, but I don't play the sax that often these days. There are some DTF'ers that play the sax though and they could likely do so better than me.

DarkLord, is it okay if I send you the music and the videos separately as a WAV and a MP4 and you sync it up later? I'll have to record at least three tracks: clean, rhytm and leads. :)

I could do the guitar to Another Day, it's not really a difficult one at all, but I don't think I can record it before somewhere next week. The reason I said I'd rather not record saxophone is that I don't play sax very often and I don't really feel comfortable recording myself with it, whereas there are tons of videos of me on Youtube with a guitar. I might have a go at the sax later this week and see if I can make it sound right, if not I'll stick to guitar for this project.

Reminds me what format you want the recording in… Do you want it as an MP3? FLAC? What?  The reason I ask is that once I do get a recorded, and I have no idea when I'm going to, hopefully within the next two weeks… I do have audacity and I can use that to splice all my takes together into one track.

Well, I've got a Midi keyboard so I have to use a DAW to get sound ( I used Ignite). Then I just set stereo mixer as standard recording device and used the camera on my laptop to film, and since stereo mixer is set as recording device it also records the sound coming from the DAW.

  My camera's awful

Maybe I can return to this later on but for now I'd like to drop out of this project.

The most annoying part about the solo are those random upward sweeps in the second to last solo.

So...... I'm super late to this party, but sign me up for one of the next songs you guys want to cover. I'm a 21 year guitar vet with some solid chops, and I have a pretty solid semi-pro recording studio. Definitely up for rocking some Dream Theater tunes with some strangers  ;)

Hey! It's nice to have you on board! Lots of the folks are struggling with the first song, so I'm thinking of preparing another one for the time being while we get Another Day all set up.  :D

Hi Folks !

If you need one more keyboardist ... piano or synth oriented stuff
Here is what I can do with Kevin Moore style but I can try Rudess stuff as well (Solitary Shell, Begin Again or other Astonishing songs).

Gah I keep forgettting to do this.

It's going to be a while. I have umpteen zillion concerts within the next couple of months. Life of a music teacher and an assistant conductor.

Easy splang, no one except home has sent me any files.  :lol I guess this didn't work out the way I hoped it would. Maybe we could begin recruiting some of the members that have written and do some other songs while we can get Another Day down straight?

Hey guys,

New member here. I'm a drummer that has been playing for about 20 years. I've always wanted to collaborate and do some covers over the internet. Is this project still happening? I would love to be a part of it. I have my own recording equipment and I'm very well versed in Dream Theater material (at least up until Black Clouds). I'm available to jam out!

I was wondering the same thing.  If any complete instrumental tracks are done and Splent is too busy to lay down vocals, I would be happy to step in.

Songs I've been playing lately:

Afterlife
The Root of All Evil
Most of SFAM
6:00
Solitary Shell + About to Crash (Reprise)
A Change of Seasons
Peruvian Skies
Stream of Consciousness (minus the ridiculously fast first solo)

I think so far the one I think we can pull off from the new one is "Chosen".  But I haven't heard anything after that yet.

That's one easy, and it would really be awesome to pull something off The Astonishing. We still need a bass player and a guitar player.  :D

Hey! just saw this post on the forum.
Please check out few of the cover i have done on YouTube.
I would be really interested in doing a Dream Theater Tribute.
Kindly let me know what you think of my playing and tone.

We could invite 7 famous drummers to audition, film the entire thing, and then release it as a documentary.

Can I play the role of Derek Roddy, whereby I audition, get rejected then say I never wanted it in the first place and post lots of pics of me with snakes?

Can I get some snakes to help make this happen?

Anyway, while we're getting a drummer, what song should we start on? I've personally been practicing Dystopian Overture every now & then but I'm still pretty far from perfecting it (especially 1:45-2:03), so... any suggestions?

Update: I've got most of the rhythm down for DO except for memorisation & playing the fast part at 2:01-2:03. Still open to song suggestions we could do, but mostly I'm just posting this to make sure no-one's forgotten about this thread. :dunno:

Yes.

But since I am a guitarist as well, it's pretty pointless to play the same stuff. I just looked at Dystopian Overture, both the 'rhythm' and 'lead' parts and I could play both without any problems. I would just have to practise a little.

If we want to keep this moving, I think someone should create a new thread with either a poll or with people voting to at least finalize a song choice. That's a start.
Then make a basic backing track for everyone to use to keep things synced (better than trying to play along to the studio version), and set a hard date for people to submit their contributions. Then put together what we have into something finished. See how that goes.

Projects like this often have trouble getting off the ground because everyone's doing their own thing and forgets about it, but I know we have the talent here to put together something if we push it along.

Good idea, I'll get on that as soon as I know what everyone here's comfortable with. We already have:
- Dystopian Overture
- Another Day (which is what we were going to do the first time, still VERY concerned about vocals)
- plus the list of songs that Elite put up earlier (I think SoC would be a good choice personally, plus I knew all of TROAE at one point)
- that other list before in the thread that had Another Day & To Live Forever on it

Here's the poll as it is: https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=49020.0. If anyone has any other suggestions, let me know so I can add it to the poll.

I guess Metropolis is too cliche? :lol Looks like a pretty good list. I'd favour something shorter for the sake of getting something done. If nothing's happened yet, I don't like our chances of putting together a complete ACOS for example. So many parts.
Actually, it might have been an idea to have multiple choice so people can choose every song they'd be willing/capable of participating in, especially if you have a lot of options with not a lot of votes.

Sorry I stopped answering in this thread, guys. Organizing took way too much time and honestly I kinda forgot about it (it's been almost a year since I made it lol). We should all focus in the new thread and leave this one to die a nasty death.
