So after reading predictions and discussions about the new album, I've been really fascinated by how different peoples' preferences and opinions are. Of course this has always been the case for me, which is what makes DT and DT fans some of the most interesting things.
So for the release of the new album, I've created this short survey to quantify just what people think! I know it's early, but plenty of people have heard it through promos, and some have even received their legitimate copies already. The survey does take that into account by asking for how many times you've listened as well as knowing when your response was submitted too.

I'd appreciate your guys' thoughts! And as I get more responses, I'll create some slightly more in depth analyses of the data.

Even though we have to give our username, are our results anonymous? (to the rest of the forum, I mean)
-
Results are indeed anonymous. You don't even have to give your official forum name really. I have it set so you can change your answers, but in case that doesn't work, you can always take it again, message me your name you used in your original submission, and I can delete those responses from the spreadsheet. That's the only reason I stuck that in.

Cool. Since it says it's mandatory, I didn't want to risk you dismissing it because I put in a name like "Poop Dagger".
-
:lol Usually it's pretty obvious when people are trolling with responses. I won't hold Poopy Dagger against you.

I shall be known as "Excrement Scimitar".
Actually, that could be a song title for Cattle Decapitation.

People have accused my regular opinions of being trolling, so that could also be a concern for me. :lol

Looking at the results I am pleased to see we all love Three Days.

Where are you seeing the results? Was it when you submitted your answers? Did I miss data?!

Words fail to describe how much I love Three Days, I really hope it's not just the hype talking.

Though I should say, when people view the responses, they can see all the names entered. They can't see which other responses correspond to those names, but everyone can see that robwebster has either come back simply to chime in or someone is having a bit of fun with identity theft. :lol
-
I'll take the survey either this weekend if any of the local record stores will have the new DT at reasonable price or if I will be able to catch the official RR stream or something, or some weeks later when my copy arrives from Amazon.

Eighteen months, practically two years, you've been off gallivanting around in a personal life, depriving us of your wit and wisdom and all we get is two words? This development is way more upsetting than any potential disappointment I might feel at finally finding out what the fucking NOMACS eyes do. What do they do?! Why aren't we being told?!

welcome back!! sorely missed!

Done.
I'm in the meh territory.
-
I listened to the album (files) a few weeks ago and I got the final set today. Well, not bad.... but light years away from their great level on IAW or Awake.
It's better than Systematic Chaos, Dream Theater and Black Clouds IMO.
Final rating 5/10

A New beginning is my favorite so far.
-
I'll check the survey out, but not until I've had time to digest the album properly. Normally takes me a while to get to grips with new music, especially with something like this!
-
Very cool reading everyone's responses to the album. Three Days is, indeed, an amazing song.
And not that it matters, but I got a kick out of seeing the highest percentage of fans got into the band in 2003 (when I got into them). Right on!

Just finished the 1st disc and to be fair, it's ok .. No more... Will take a few more hearing i guess
But please tell me you didn't fill out a survey about the album after one listen of half of it?
-
Definitely a nice idea. Gonna get right on it. :tup
-
Three Days the albums most "metal" song (my opinion) seems to be the favorite right now. Which is odd because in the "elements of DT" question metal only got 4 votes.
Not trying to be snarky or anything just thought it was an interesting tidbit.
-
Current results are fairly interesting in and of themselves, but what I'm most interested in, Implode, is whether you'll be able to do any cool analytics once you've got a bigger data set. So, say, people who loved these previous albums were x% more likely to love The Astonishing, or whatever.
And yeah, the love for Three Days is marvellous.
-
Why did so many people become fans in 2003?
-
Yes, I definitely plan on doing things like that! There's so many combinations of variables, it'd take forever to test all the correlations. So feel free to make suggestions for things you want tested!

Anything that stands out really. It's a good dataset that you're collecting, but not so vast that it would take too long to test lots of different things out.
I'm totally a data analysis geek so let me know if you want me to help out. :D

-
I have heard the album 3x
Composing a concept album is hard... this is a spectacular failure!
I must edit my first rating... from 4/10 to 2/10. It's the worst DT album in their catalog.
-
huh... someone has posted as me there... and it's not me.
Welp. The name is kind of meaningless, so I'll keep the response there but change the name if you'd like.
-
Doesnt matter if the entry isnt like an obvious troll
-
I voted now just after finishing my first listen - I wouldn't normally rate things straight away but I can update later after more listens.
I see my pick for favourite track was the most popular one among other too though.
-
Haven't done any in depth analyses yet, still waiting for more responses. I know you guys are out there!
But it the mean time, here's a little bit about the average rating of all the albums. So on the first day, this is where The Astonishing stacks up according to DTF.

I favorite part is that implies there are worse, non-DT albums in their catalog. I want to know what those are!

Man, just seeing that little tidbit from Implode makes me very excited about this thread.
I'm such a nerd. :lol
-
Man, looking at the results makes me happy because of the age group chart. I remember begging my Mom to drive me to the record store for the new release "Permanent Waves" by Rush...LOL!! Looking at all of the younger fans into DT is AWESOME!!!

Can't argue with the top 3 or the bottom 1. :tup All hail the new holy trinity!
And a lot of people gave Awake a lower rating than I did, so don't blame me! :lol
-
It was very hard to pick my favorite song. There are so many good ones. Went for Three Days, but it could be TGOM, A Life Left Behind, MOB, Brother, Can You Hear Me?...
I rated TA as 9/10. The question is whether TA will resist the test of time. It can grow to be my personal best, but also get old and be the second worst (after WDADU).
-
Can't argue with the top 3 or the bottom 1. :tup All hail the new holy trinity!
It's actually a big four, silly :-*
-
I enjoyed taking this survey and reading the overall results, thanks for making this.

Same! Three Days was the track that immediatly stood out on my first listen, I love it. Nice to see so many people agree :)

I'll stick with the three correct ones, thanks.
-
Voted/commented/etc. However, I didn't pick a favorite song, because I simply can't yet. There's WAY too many songs to easily say *this* one is the best. Upon first listen it was Three Days without a shadow of doubt, but now I don't know. There's at least 13-15 songs that I consider top tier, but it's going to take a while for me to pick a discernible favorite.
-
I'm starting some of the fun analysis now. I'll just say right now, that obviously this is a very small sample size when compared to the population of DT fans, so take all of these conclusions with a grain of salt. Also, the results I'm going to highlight are all significant using a=.05. In the end, I'll probably post a link to all the stats data for fun, but for now I'll point out the highlights.
First I've done a comparison of album rating and preferred aspect of DT, which I thought would be a good way to make sure my math is checking out since some of the conclusions shouldn't be surprising. The significant results are as follows:
- People who prefer Prog are more likely to rate TOT higher. (Wasn't expecting that.) (has since become insignificant with more responses)
- People who prefer Metal are more likely to rate I&W lower.
- People who prefer Metal are more likely to rate 8VM higher.
- People who prefer Metal are more likely to rate DT12 lower.
- People who prefer Pop/Melodic are more likely to rate 8VM lower.
Some of these seem strange, but keep in mind the sample size with these responses in particular are very small. I think other comparisons will hold more weight.
Ignore this. I screwed it up and fixed it here: https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=45705.msg2093269#msg2093269

Yeah, that doesn't look right. :lol
-
Yeah the sample sizes for "metal" and "pop/melodic" were very low. That first finding is an interesting one though! Can't say I would have expected that.
-
Yeah, these results do seem a bit arbitrary unfortunately. But like I said, it'll likely be better with other variables. Almost everyone just answered that they didn't care about labels with that question anyway.
-
Here's something a lot better. I'll include some data here. I'm comparing the ratings of albums between people 30 or younger and people older than 30 (about a 60/40 split in the survey). The columns below are the albums, the average ratings for each of the two age groups, and the p-value, which for non-stats nerds, is basically the probability that the difference between the two averages happened simply by chance. If that number is lower that .05, then I can make the claim that the actual average ratings from the two groups are indeed different.
Album <= 30 > 30 P-value
WDADU 5.19 5.10 0.353
I&W 9.07 9.01 0.361
Awake 8.33 8.50 0.189
FII 6.94 7.09 0.203
SFAM 9.29 9.38 0.239
SDOIT 8.96 8.62 0.007 <--!!
TOT 7.69 7.48 0.122
8VM 7.88 7.60 0.071
SC 6.30 6.43 0.274
BC&SL 6.50 6.75 0.127
ADTOE 7.76 7.83 0.353
DT12 6.87 7.18 0.075
TA 8.14 8.09 0.424
Although a lot of us probably think there are many differences between these two groups, the data show only one significant difference: The younger crowd likes SDOIT more. :P
-
I'm late to the party but I really felt that I needed to listen multiple times to take it all in. I LOVE IT!
There are a few parts that seem to be a bit slow but that might change. I specifically was looking for these "slow" parts during a session last night and upon careful examination the "slow" part were appropriate and I enjoyed them more knowing that they should be there.
I'm finding plenty of the harder/metal type sections to satisfy me, which was a concern due to the reviews before it was released.
Clearly, this is a phenomenal performance by James, as others have said. I'm not usually into DT vocals but this release has changed that.
I also think it's the PERFECT time for this type of release. Funny because you'd think with the luke warm response that DT12 got that they would have decided to do something big, but JP was already working on it. I think sometimes we just need to trust them, they know what they're doing. :)
:metal
-
This development is way more upsetting than any potential disappointment I might feel at finally finding out what the fucking NOMACS eyes do. What do they do?! Why aren't we being told?!
Obviously, once the correct number/sequence of eye clicks were completed, the NOMAC summoned robwebster.

Im surprised to see ADTOE got such a low score. I was sure it was more highly regarded here.
-
Nice work here. But what happened to Six Degrees?

I forgot it, which in turn caused all those to be off my one album.
Here's the corrected data:
Album <= 30 > 30 P-value
WDADU 5.19 5.10 0.353
I&W 9.07 9.01 0.361

ADTOE 7.76 7.83 0.353

So actually it's SDOIT that the younger people like more. Go figure.
-
Which of course also means I messed up with the last test I posted. :lol Here's the accurate data:

That means the significant bits are as follows:
- People who answered Metal rate I&W lower.
- People who answered Metal rate TOT higher.
- People who answered Metal rate ADTOE lower.
- People who answered Pop/Melodic rate TOT lower.
That makes way more sense. :rollin
-
That makes way more sense. :rollin
I was reading through the older results and thought they were peculiar. The new ones definitely feels more right :lol
-
That makes so much more sense. :lol
Implode, with the age one, I'd be really interested in seeing it broken down by the 5-year blocks the survey asked about, but maybe starting with <20 and going up to >40. That should give reasonable enough sample sizes.
-
Participated. Interesting survey. :tup
