It's this time of the year again! 2015 is coming to an end, and we already know some huge releases are dropping next year, so let's tally them up in this thread!
This thread will feature the dates of the albums being released in 2016. I did the previous year edition, and Zantera did the two editions before that, and I think Nick did the 2010 one and I can't remember the rest of them. Anyway, I'll be adding the albums I know of, mostly in the power / progressive metal genre, because that's where my interests in music are, and I'll also try to add everything that pops up in my promo box, but there are so much music made out there that I'm bound to miss a lot of releases - and that's when you guys come in. If you know any album that'll be released in 2016 and currently isn't on the list, do us a favour and post the relevant information in comments.
I can't promise the instant updates due to my other commitments, but I'll do my best to keep this thread updated - I updated the last one at least once a week and I think the schedule for this one will be more or less the same.

Fine by me. Thank you!

If Guns N' Roses don't belong in the "I'll believe it when I hold the album in my hands" section, I don't know what does. :lol

Nothing entirely sure yet but a 2016 Avenged Sevenfold release is very likely, probably belongs in the "I'll believe it when I hold the album in my hands" section for now.
-
I think both Thank You Scientist and East of the Wall are working on new albums at this very moment so 2016 seems likely for both but there's no official announcement for either yet
-
that wouldn't surprise me about East of the Wall, as they released a split EP with a cover this past year, so they have been active recently.
-
Looking at my list, trying not to repeat anyone.
Jan. 15 - Panic! At The Disco - Death Of A Bachelor
Feb. 5 - Elton John - Wonderful Crazy Night
Feb. 19 - Wolfmother - Victorious
Bowie, DT, Megadeth and Steven Wilson already appear to have been covered, so these are the only definitive dates I have for now.
-
March 4th: Tiles - Pretending To Run
Also, the next Karmakanic album should be due out something next year as well. I also think Roine Stolt's brother, Michael Stolt, has a new solo album as well.
-Marc.
-
Add new Destiny Potato album to be released in April :P
Am excite. :caffeine:
-
Jan 29th also has Nordic Union s/t - Frontiers project involving Eric Martensson and Ronnie Atkins.
Feb 26th - Headspace/All That You Fear Is Gone
Others in the virtually certain category:
Starbreaker - they confirmed a 2016 release last year, but no title yet I believe
Thunderstone - confirmed on FB that the album is mixed and mastered
Circus Maximus - looks like they released the album cover on FB yesterday
Soulspell - They gave us artwork a title back in November (The Second Big Bang), but no release date ("Coming Soon")
Lots of others that are rumoured/writing/recording, but that could be an endless list.
-
Alright, I added all of the definite ones. How did I forget Headspace and Tiles?
As for the "likely" / TBA ones, I'd like to keep TBA list as non-bloated as possible, and as some of the bands SoundscapeMN mentioned were featured in 2015 Release Date Calendar TBA section since January, I'm a bit wary of adding them. I've added Fates Warning as I definitely remember them saying all the music is done and they're aiming for first-half-of-2016 release, Marillion is already there in the doubt-list (it's kinda reserved for the big bands :lol ), but I'm doubtful about the others.
SoundscapeMN, if possible, can you narrow the list to the bands you're almost certain they'll do a release in 2016? For example, I know Daniel from PoS said he's writing the new stuff with Ragnar, but there have been no word (as far as I know) about 2016 and knowing how Road Salt II was repeatedly delayed, I'm reluctant to add them to the list until any official announcement.
(I know Tool are on the list, but this is more a joke than anything else.)
-

Agreed 100%. Even bands that are writing/recording I wouldn't add. Just the ones that have publicly announced a title or have indicated that it's in final production stages (such as Thunderstone). It's likely if they've gone to the effort of mixing/mastering, then an album will be coming out within the next 12 months.

without a release date or any info, there's no certainty, but the list I posted above is mostly artists who have written and/or recorded music for a new release.
I mean go ahead and just add the ones with actual release dates, but odds are most if not all the other artists on the list I posted above will have an album coming out in 2016, so they'll be added eventually.

The Mercury Tree
Radical Face - The Family Tree III: Leaves
The Woods Brothers - The Woods Brothers
Dream the Electric Sleep worked with producer Nick Raskulinecz last Summer; I don't know why theiir album wouldn't come out in 2016 if they spent a lot of time and money in the studio working with him.
The Mercury Tree the last time I saw them in September, said they were looking to release a new album this fall, and that at that point, all but 25% of it was recorded.
Radical Face had a lengthly email about their next record and more or less certain it would be coming out in the early part of 2016

"Hey there,
So things are on the move again. I am now completely done with both The Family Tree: The Leaves and the full album of all The Bastards (it includes volumes 1 – 4 of the EPs). They have been mastered, all the art is done, release dates are being set.
I wanted to get something out this fall, since that's when The Leaves was supposed to be done and available. Then life got very dark and strange, and we're still dealing with that, so that record won't be available until early next year."
-
Yeah, I already added all the albums with release dates. I'll add the five you've narrowed the list down to now. :tup

I've read a title and it doesn't sound fantastic! :lol

Well, it's more like EP than an album. It's the outtakes from HCE and re-recorded Don't Hate Me, 37 minutes in total.

Their last one was really crap IMO, I hope they can find a bit of energy and give us something better.
-
I really liked On the 13th Day, one of the best since the reunion imo. I have Escape from the Shadow Garden but haven't really listened to it.
-

New Obsidian Kingdom? oh gosh

Why are Marillion in the IBIWIHIIMH section? Do they have a history of delaying album releases? We know they're in the studio, so it's pretty trustworthy that an album will be here in 2016.
-
Added everything, thank you guys!

We had them in the previous year list, and I recall some people saying they weren't sure with anything about Marillion until they've got an official announcement of the album, so I just lumped them in that list. If it's bothering anyone or incorrect, I'll move them up to TBA section.

Well, I saw an announcement from the band on Facebook just today (or yesterday? I don't recall) saying that they'd still be in the studio through January, and that pre-orders are still available until the release date, but only til the 31st of December can you pre-order to have your name in the special edition. I think they'll be done by the end of January, which likely means a late-spring or early-summer release, but DEFINITELY in 2016.
-Marc.
-
New Obsidian Kingdom? oh gosh
Yup. I've heard some of the samples they've published online, and sounds pretty interesting.
-
Cloudscape - Voice of Reason - Jan 8th.
-
You should add Destrage in the TBA, the title is also TBA.
-
I'll add everything after the New Year celebrations.
Mike, any link to that Destrage album announcement?
-
Guess you can put Withem officially in the Date TBD category. This was on FB this morning:
As they've been mastering for at least a month, pretty sure it's a safe bet for 2016.
-
Hopefully someone else cares about this:
March 1st: Blaze Bayley - Infinite entanglement :metal

A.C.T - Trifles and Pandemonium (live) BR / DVD out in the early days of spring 2016
-
The Neal Morse Band is meeting this month to write/record music, and Neal has stated that he hopes to have a new album out by the end of the year, possibly in the 4th quarter (I'd guess either October or November). He should also be releasing MORSEfest 2015 at some point as well, but both of these don't have any confirmed release dates, but they're both very likely to happen within the next 12 months.
-Marc.
-
I don't know if anyone's interested, but I'll put it anyway. Also, I believe Tremonti's Dust is billed for an April release.
April 1st - Black Stone Cherry - Kentucky

From FB this morning:
Dear THUNDERSTONErs! This is the day you—and we!—have been waiting for:
We are extremely proud to announce that our sixth album, APOCALYPSE AGAIN, will be released 1 April 2016 through Sakara Records/Sony Music (Finland), Marquee (Japan, S Korea, Taiwan), and AFM records (ROW). The first official single, THE PATH, will be released 10 February 2016. We are heading to the filming studio tomorrow to shoot a video for the song with our dear friend and video wizard Owe Lingwall, whose credentials include luminaries such as Meshuggah, The Rasmus, Stratovarius, and Amorphis.
Says Nino: ”This is in many ways a return to form—not just in a nostalgic sense, but going back to what we started with and creating something new at the same time. We really wanted to honour all the fans and friends who have stuck with us from the beginning, and I think everyone who picked up our first album all those years ago will be massively happy with APOCALYPSE AGAIN. We sure as hell are! Expect melody overkill, sing-along choruses, fast lead runs and overall arse-kickery! We’re back!”

On another note, shouldn't Metallica be in the "I'll believe it when I hold the album in my hands" section?
Also, I was going to say that A7X if album period trends are consistent that they should have an album out this year for sure, but then again, with their Warner Bros lawsuit that is now happening, who knows now.

Noticed on the OP that Eric Gillette's "The Great Unknown" is listed for May 2nd, but it's not out yet. May 2nd is when the presales began for the album. I couldn't find a solid release date from his website, though, but I can't imagine it to be no later than August - if I had to guess, it'll be out next month (June).
Also, Jonas Reingold sent an email out from Reingold Records a few days ago. The new Karmakanic album, "Dot", will be out in July.

Been waiting that 22 album for a long time, I hope it comes this year!!!!!!!!!!
yeah same here. At least their Social Media presence has been more regular this year. I shot them a message on twitter a few months ago and they said it should be coming soon. https://twitter.com/22NEWENERGY/status/689833224202231808

Pre-orders for Chevelle's new album "The North Corridor" begin in five days and you have to pre-order from their website to get the bonus track, but I can't seem to find the actual release date. Just the pre-order date. ???
EDIT:
Jun. 3, 2016 - Paul Simon - Stranger To Stranger

Added everything and more albums. Keep them coming! :tup
Not sure what's up with Destiny Potato - their album listed as TBA in April and I couldn't find anything with a quick google. Sacul (or other Destiny Potato fans), help me out.

Meshuggah has an album coming out this year. There's no exact date yet but they've officially said "fall 2016".

Oh dang. I knew they had an album coming out this year, but I was not aware that it was going to be July until this post. Heard Live It Well. Sounds pretty promising.
-
Regarding Eric Gillette's new album, I just received a shipment notification email earlier today, so the album is beginning to ship, but I'm not sure what the intended release date it. Perhaps it's this Friday, along with Frost* and Big Big Train? His website still isn't very clear on the matter...
In other prog release news, Karmakanic's next studio album finally has a release date in July 22nd, so that can be updated.
The new Neal Morse Band album is set to drop in September, but before that, Neal's Alive Again live concert video set is coming out on August 5th according to Neal's recent Inner Circle newsletter.
-Marc.

Hope so. I liked Vice Verses but 2014's Fading West did very little for me. This new one has a deluxe edition with three extra songs if you're interested, but I don't know if that's a store-exclusive thing or what.
-
I'll try to update this thread on weekend.
Also, just so I don't forget this:
July - 8: Wolverine - Machina Viva
-
June 3 - The Strokes - Future Present Past (EP)
Sure it's just an EP, but it is nice to get something new from them. I really liked the last two albums. Looking like it might be digital/vinyl only, though.
-
Witherscape - The Northern Sanctuary - July 22nd
-
Denner/Shermann - Masters of Evil - June 24th
-
September
9: Local Natives - Sunlit Youth
-
Two upcoming albums that I'm very excited about, hopefully someone else shares the excitement:
of Montreal - Innocence reaches (August 12)
Van der Graaf Generator - Do not disturb (September 30)
-
June 10 (Yesterday): Garbage - Strange Little Birds
-
how haven't we acknowledged new Paul Gilbert (SO good) and upcoming new Orbs?!
-
June 14 (today): Cosmograph - The Unreasonable Silence
-
A couple of updates from albums I've ordered/received:
ERIC GILLETTE's new album came out last week, I got mine in the mail on June 9th, so I can only guess the "official" release date would be Friday, June 10th?
KARMAKANIC's upcoming album DOT will be coming out July 22nd.
CIRCA: (the band with Tony Kaye and Billy Sherwood) have a new album of 4 epic tracks, titled VALLEY OF THE WINDMILL, coming out on July 8th.
And finally, Neal Morse will have a new live album out on August 5th, titled ALIVE AGAIN (after the epic track from his last album). Still no word from him on MORSEfest 2015's release date, though I'm sure he'd been busy gearing up for MORSEfest 2016!
Oh...and if its not on there yet, the next Neal Morse Band album, a 2-disc concept, will be out in September sometime (hopefully as far apart from Marillion as possible so I have enough time to enjoy one before the other!).
-Marc.
-
Karmakanic's an automatic buy for me. All of their discs have been either good or great. Jonas Reingold is one of my favorite musicians of all time.
Thanks to this thread I discovered a great band I had never heard before and that is "Thunderstone" :o :o :o
Seems like a lot of their older stuff is out of print or only available used and at some fairly steep prices. I was able to get my hands on three of their albums from Amazon.com, though. I bought the new one "Apocalypse Again" and almost tossed it because I thought the opening track was a bit suspect, especially lyrically. But holy shit these guys are great :metal After a couple of spins of Apocalypse Again I went up on Amazon.com and grabbed MP3 copies of Tools of Destruction and Evolution 4.0. $5.99 each. Can't beat that! :hat
-
Mumford And Sons put out a collaborative EP today. Bun E. Carlos is putting out a solo album, and from the way the cover looks it seems he will make damn sure that you remember he was the original drummer for Cheap Trick. Heart's also got a new studio album coming out July 8. Couldn't find a small enough image to post.

From the Kansas FB page:
KANSAS ANNOUNCES FIRST NEW ALBUM IN SIXTEEN YEARS
THE PRELUDE IMPLICIT TO BE RELEASED SEPTEMBER 23
JUNE 21st, 2016 - KANSAS, America’s legendary progressive rock band, will release their intensely anticipated new studio album “The Prelude Implicit” on September 23, 2016. The album is the first new release in 16 years for the band that has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, and is famous for classic hits such as ‘Carry On Wayward Son’ and ‘Dust In the Wind,’ to progressive epics like ‘Song for America’ and ‘Miracles Out of Nowhere.’
“The Prelude Implicit” features 10 all new tracks written by the band and co-produced by Zak Rizvi, Phil Ehart, and Richard Williams. KANSAS’s signature sound is evident throughout the album. It showcases Ronnie Platt’s soaring lead vocals, David Ragsdale’s blistering violin, Williams and Rizvi’s rocking guitar riffs, the unmistakable sound of David Manion’s B3 organ and keyboards, Ehart’s thundering drums, and Billy Greer’s driving bass and vocals.

Update for the new Neal Morse Band album - it is no longer coming out in September, but is now being released on November 11th.
Also, Andy Tillison just sent out his newest solo album this week, and people around the world have been getting their copies, so I would say the release date could be labelled as July 22nd. It's titled DURCH, or Machte es Durch (though the cover puts "Machte es" in parenthesis before and above DURCH.

August 19th - Lindsey Stirling - Brave Enough
Heard her previous album, Shatter Me, quite different from what I would typically listen to, but I liked it. Pretty good background music. Heard some tracks from her next album, and it's good enough for me to be intrigued of the album.

Could be because I was kind of busy to update this and was only putting the updates from this thread into the Calendar and then I said I will update this with other albums this weekend which I still didn't do, because I planned to do it on Sunday when I had enough free time to do this and also get some writeups done for an upcoming Ayreon discography.
Which reminds me, I should fire up the next Kamelot Survivor post right now.

It was completely absurd that A7X were even regulated to that category in the first place.

Not sure how well liked this band are around here but Witchcraft released Nucleus on January 15th :tup

I honestly don't remember how they got into that category. I'm not a fan of them, so I'm not really sure.
Now that I'm back from vacation, I'll update this list later this week.

by the way, is a 2017 topic going to be created soon? I might be willing to create and maintain it if Evermind isn't up for it again this year.

Yeah, with all the real life work-related stuff happening in my life now and the other DTF projects I'm committed in 2017 (namely Arjen Lucassen Discography and Survivor and who knows what else), I think it'd be for the best if someone else took over this. I have no objections about you taking over, if it matters. In fact, I'm glad you will be taking over since you were one of the guys who constantly posted updates in this thread. :tup (and you've got far more seniority over me when it comes to the time we spent at DTF, so there's that too.) I will also give you some updates about those weird power metal bands that will slip under your radar.
I promise I will update this thread tomorrow, too.
-
ahh, I know about time priorities, understood.
Yeah, I'm kind of a new release hound, and my blog is kind of about that as well.
I'll plan to create a topic rather soon then, and try and stick to the certain release dates, etc.
-
Probably about time to unsticky this thread.
