So, my girlfriend surprised me today with a record player for my birthday. I could not be more excited. I've never played vinyl before and I'm really looking forward to starting a great collection. I'm tormenting myself over what my first album should be :lol
Any fans or collectors of vinyl here?
-
I want to get some more vinyl, but I need a better turntable (and money). I REALLY want Thrice's Alchemy Index collection on Vinyl.
-
Any prog Genesis makes you feel like your in the 70s. Ahhhhhh
-
My collection:
Thrice - The Alchemy Index
Boris - Pink
Boris and Sunn 0))) - Altar
Kayo Dot - Dowsing Anemone with Copper Tongue
Yes - Close to the Edge
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada, Yanqui UXO
Between the Buried and Me - Colors
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over the Sea
-
Thrice - The Alchemy Index
die.
Kayo Dot - Dowsing Anemone with Copper Tongue
I would die to have Choirs of the Eye of vinyl, but I don't think it was ever pressed, was it?

I'm "kind of" a vinyl collector... I've got about 50 or 60, but a good portion of those are just my mom's old records. Regardless of where you start, I'd recommend taking a trip to Mr. Cheapos in Commack (Mayfair Shopping Center on Jericho Tpke). That's where I do the vast majority of my non-online vinyl shopping. (There's also one in Mineola, but its nowhere near as good as the one in Commack).
Anyway, if you're a Floyd fan, you can't go wrong with the Dark Side of the Moon 30th Anniversary Edition vinyl. That's as good a place as any to start off your collection :).

Abbey Road - The Beatles

Thanks for the rec! I'll definitely check out the shop. I've been to quite a few record shops in Manhattan and Brooklyn so I'll have to revisit them as well. I'll check out the 30th Anniversary edition, I love PF.
Can anyone recommend a decent (read: not terribly expensive) set of speakers?

Hey Goon, this thread made me laugh. Next you should try Atari! :lol
There's nothing cooler than opening, say, Maiden's Live After Death or Kiss Alive 2 and seeing those giant stage photos. But seriously, CD's are so much more convenient.
-
One of the coolest things about Vinyl is you won't believe some of the deals you'll find. Just go to a record store and you'll find a TON of albums you probably wouldn't buy for full price, but for $1-4 you can get on Vinyl and check out.

:lol Thanks, TAC. I know that CDs are more convenient and I'm sure I'll keep buying them. But as someone who primarily consumes his music digitally (via the internet) I'm looking forward to having new listening experiences. One thing I really like to do is just sit and listen to an album with no distractions. However with my entire music catalog available at the flick of a thumb anywhere i am it becomes so tempting to do other things simultaneously.

I would always notice this when I went record store browsing with my friends. Can't wait to check out some old music I've been meaning to get as well as stuff I've never even heard of.

Slippery When Wet for $2. True story. Fuck yeah.

Nah, you'd hold out for one autographed by a Space Invader!

I have an Atari 2600 with hundreds of built in games sitting around somewhere. Last I checked, it worked perfectly. Let's play boxing. :corn

i have around 150 vinyl records i think, and i love them all to death. TO DEATH.

I still have most of my vinyl. About 3000 albums worth. Me = old.
-
I just bought a used copy of Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life for 5 bucks :)
Saw it at Virgin Megastore an hour later for $45.

This. Or any copy of DSotM. Listening to it on vinyl is like some sort of continuous orgasm.

Heres the list of vinyls I own, not counting duplicates and not counting the boxes of vinyls my dad has in the basement.

Abbey Road - The Beatles
This or Dark Side of the Moon.
Seriously. Do it.
If...CD's are cigarette smoke.......................Vinyl is cigar smoke....the sound is so thick...it actually hangs in the air longer for you to hear.
Happy listening.
My old man had some Zappa on vinyl....also not a bad place to start. I don't remember the songs, and I'm not a huge zappa fan I just remember thinking....wow.....could this sound ANY better?
-
I have Dark Side of The Moon, Animals, Wish You Were here on Vinyl.
And King Crimson's In The Court of the Crimson King. That is a vinyl must-have.
-
^I'm really pissed I don't have any of those on vinyl yet...
Though I have The Wall, which sounds great, and plenty of other amazing albums.
-
I have Richard Simmon's 'Reach' on vinyl.
That is all.
-
Hope someone can help me ?
I will be traveling to Boston in July and I would like to buy some vinyl, so does anyone know so good new or secondhand record shops please.
Thanks
Les
-
why do you need to go to boston to buy vinyl?
-
I'm the opposite of you, i have some Vinyls but not a record player, also noob in this, 3 weeks ago i bought Close to the Edge and Classics by Yes, this saturday will be LZ II
Buy some Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin, it should be a good start imo

I have seen many stores in Boston that buy/sell used stuff. I think you should check out Newbury Comics, I don't think it's the largest but it's a nice place to start. Or, just walk around Harvard Square, I have seen at least 4 stores there (one is planet records on the JFK street).
-
Hi and thanks for the reply's
brakkum I will be on holiday
reneranucci Thanks for the info ;D
Thanks
Les

OK I'm and old fart here ~4000 on vinyl, depending on what you like. Chicago's first 2 are great on vinyl, Alan Parsons is a good start too. If you can find a decent copy of Marillion's Misplaced Childhood it's verrry nice. ANd if you feel like splurging a little find the First LTE on vinyl, it's a double album for ~$30 but it blows the CD away
-
I consider myself a vinyl collector. I have 3500 records. I love having classic stuff on vinyl as well as new stuff.
My most recent purchese was the new Iron Maiden- Flight 666 Double Picture Disc Gatefold :metal
-
Do you guys play your vinyl or just collect it?
-
Do you guys play your vinyl or just collect it?
Well i do both. The cheap-os that i buy for a buck or 2 i listen too, but if i buy new records especially limited editon ones, i leave them sealed.
-
I have Queen's A Night at the Opera on vinyl, I believe (it may be another Queen album).
I used to own a nice record player, but I sold it for some cash. They are really great for listening to music to.

Same! Really good album. Picked up a copy a year ago in a local shop for 99 cents and it plays perfectly

same here, i got it super cheap, and its probably my cleanest sounding record, not to mention the songs are top notch. this is how the 80s should have been. RIP.
-
My Black Clouds & Silver Linings double LP came in last night and boy is it purrrdy.
-
I play 95% of my vinyl.
-

Both, I don't buy it unless I'm going to listen to it, the only sealed copy that comes to mind for me is Steve Vai's "Passion and Warfare"
-
Did anyone else get the LTE vinyl yet? Holy F$#%!!!! it sounds great
-

Nope, haven't even heard of it actually. :blush Which album is it? LTE1? LTE2? Or the new live album? And where can I find a copy? :)
-
I'm trying to more vinyls to cover my rooms walls along with the necessary posters.
My mom has a SIGNED prime condition Led Zeppelin vinyl. Unfortunately, she is too paranoid it will be stolen or I will drool over it and ruin it, so she put it in a safe at a bank.

...
There's nothing cooler than opening, say, Maiden's Live After Death or Kiss Alive 2 and seeing those giant stage photos. ...
I remember those moments from my youth. I would sit and stare at the photos for hours while listening imagining what it would be like to see them in concert. (I was not allowed to go to see Kiss when Alive II came out- too young).
-
Bump from the dead! I'm gonna head out to Mr. Cheapo's today on Zep's months-old recommendation :D Hopefully I can get some cool shit.
-
My latest haul from last week was as follows:
Billy Joel - Greatest Hits Volume 1 and 2
Yes - Going for the One
Aerosmtih - Permanent Vacation
Boston - Don't Look Back
I also saw McCartney's debut solo album and the debut Queen album... might go back to pick those up next week. They also had Tomato by Yes but I couldn't tell if it would skip or not. I wish they let you test out the vinyl before you buy it.
-
I had a mini vinyl festival while I was cleaning earlier today.
I listened to Rush's All The World's A Stage and Moving Pictures, Marillion's B'Sides Themselves, A Rush boot from the Signals Tour in Rotterdam in 1983 (I forget the name right now) and an episode of Jim Ladd's "Innerview" Radio show featuring Neil Peart talking about Moving Pictures from June 1981.
Analog bliss.
-
My updated Vinyl collection:
Yes - Close to the Edge
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Thrice - The Alchemy Index box set
Sunn 0))) and Boris - Altar
King Crimson - Discipline
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Yanqui UXO
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists..
Boris - Pink
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
ISIS - Wavering Radiant
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Converge - Axe to Fall
Choking Victim - No Gods, No Managers
Between the Buried and Me - Colors
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Kayo Dot - Dowsing Anemone with Copper Tongue
I have been somewhat on a vinyl binge lately. For me it really adds a different level to my music listening experience. It adds a somewhat personal touch to it. I plan on using some of my Christmas money to add a few more to my collection. There is a great store around here that sells hard to find vinyls from experimental and punk bands.
-
My updated Vinyl collection:
Yes - Close to the Edge
:metal :metal :metal :metal :metal
Some of the newer vinyls I acquired recently...
Empire Strikes Back Soundtrack
Genesis - And Then There Were Three
Genesis - Abacab
Led Zeppelin - Coda
Stevie Nicks - The Wild Heart
The Police - Reggatta de Blanc
Elton John - Friends
Elton John - A Single Man Picture Disc
-
My most valuable vinyls would be: #0140 of the 2000 Follow The Reaper (Children Of Bodom) picture vinyls printed, a 1980 pressing of Iron Maiden, but under Harvest Records (they were only printed under Harvest for a very short time), and a limited edition 1989 remaster of Black Sabbath's Sabotage on clear vinyl. :metal
-

I have this aswell! :metal

Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over the Sea
God, I wish I had this on vinyl, such a remarkable album.

One thing I love about Maiden's vinyls is that you can see all the little easter eggs/nuggets/hidden things on the albums. I never noticed the little peace-sign-face thing on the wall behind Eddie, and that that little bin says "LITTER". If you look on the Powerslave vinyl, you can see hieroglyphics of Mickey Mouse, Indiana Jones, the phrase "Not Sid Was Here", and other little things.

Wot? No Guinness?
That vinyl was a good find for me... saw it at a record show for $8 and snapped it right up :)

As of now, my vinyl collection is

Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden (rare 1980 Harvest pressing)
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Black Sabbath - Sabotage (1989 limited edition remaster [clear vinyl])
Children Of Bodom - Follow The Reaper (limited edition picture vinyl, #0140 of 2000)
AC/DC - Back in Black
The Who - Tommy
Van Halen - 1984
Ted Nugent - Free-For-All
-
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over the Sea

Agreed, every song is grade A material, and as a whole the album is unlike any other.

Do you guys go record hunting at shops or buy online? I personally enjoy the excitement of not knowing what you're going to find walking into a record store, as apposed to buying online. I like the novelty of sometimes finding crap, and then finding a gem buy looking through piles/shelves and feeling very accomplished. But that's just me. :D

Cheapos rocks. I remember back in the late 1990s dropping like $70 bucks there, and walking away with 20 CDs. Not sure if prices are that low still, but yeah.
As for vinyl, I refuse to buy new vinyl unless it is something really special. It's too damn expensive. I buy used vinyl from back in the day all the time, but that's spending 4.99 per LP. This crazy crap with vinyl being 29.99 or some insane amount is ridiculous.

I'm fortunate enough that there are still record stores that carry vinyl within an hour or so drive from here. I almost never go in looking for anything. I let it find me.

Tac, Kiss Avile @ with the tattoo's inside!!!!!!!! Also the Picture inside when you open the album is one of the best live pics ever.

Just bought the original Billy Joel - Cold Spring Harbor pressing for $15. Its a different mix and his vocals are slightly sped up so his voice sounds higher. :lol Can't wait to listen to it, I've been planning on buying this for some time now.
-
I go to shops, but there are also record shows that I try to get to... my brother and I travel on occasion to them(since he's the vinyl collector of the two of us). Pretty cool to check out.

We were given a really nice record player out of the blue about 6 years ago, but our family still had one before that. I love vinyl. With both my parent's collections pooled together, there's so much choice. I remember listening to the White Album every day I came home from preschool.
My mom also owns so much Genesis, it's crazy. I don't have everything on CD, but she has EVERYTHNIG of theirs on vinyl. :metal

I've been to some of these on this list. These shows are nowhere near as good as they used to be, but they can be fruitful if you're patient enough to look through everything.

Wow, this album had been previously erased from my consciousness.
I'm sure this has been reissued on CD as part of something bigger (The Works Live album?) This has a very pretentious picture of the inside of the top of a stadium, doesn't it? What's the track listing?
-
I'm so jealous of Nick right now... :(

Totally this. Last weekend I picked up a near mint copy of Iron Maiden debut (Fame re-issue) for £2.50. Listening to it now, it sounds sooooo good compared to the CD remaster I had before. The bottom end is just perfect. :D
-
Oh, a list of vinyl? Lemme see what I have (yes, most stuff is from the pre-CD era).
The Sigur Rós box is the most expensive piece of music I have in my collection.
Another thing I really value is the signed copy of King's X "Faith Hope Love".

Anyway, if you're a Floyd fan, you can't go wrong with the Dark Side of the Moon 30th Anniversary Edition vinyl. That's as good a place as any to start off your collection :).
Also, I've been trying to decide between getting the 30th anniversary version or find a good condition one from 1973. How does it sound?

Thats just off the top of my head. My Arms, Your Hearse is probably the best-sounding album I have on vinyl. Everything just sounds fuller than on the CD, and In Rainbows tends to be the LP I reach for when I want to use my record player but don't know what to listen to.
Bump'd! :D
One of the coolest things about Vinyl is you won't believe some of the deals you'll find. Just go to a record store and you'll find a TON of albums you probably wouldn't buy for full price, but for $1-4 you can get on Vinyl and check out.
Totally this. Last weekend I picked up a near mint copy of Iron Maiden debut (Fame re-issue) for £2.50. Listening to it now, it sounds sooooo good compared to the CD remaster I had before. The bottom end is just perfect. :D
Yeah this is definitely true, but the biggest problem is that a lot of those really cheap vinyl are a bit too good to be true. I was browsing a store once, found a copy of 2112 for $4. I got really excited, then I saw all the scratches on the disc and didn't buy it.
-
Lateralus on vinyl actually disappointed me a bit. I'd love to get some Kool and The Gang, some DMB and a LOT of PT ones though. And Toto IV might actually be amazing on it.
-
As soon as burning shed gets LBS back in stock on vinyl I'm buying it. Good to know Lateralus is disappointing. I've considered buying the cool picture disc version of it before, but backed out because of price.
-
Yeah, LBS would be my first pick, it seems like the perfect fit for vinyl. I can't put my finger on what was disappointing about Lateralus, as the mix on the CD is already atrocious. Apparently the vinyl did have a different mix though, maybe it was just even worse. Have you got your eye on any more Springsteen vinyls yet SDN?
Also, Summer Madness by Kool And The Gang is the best vinyl song I've heard yet that's not jazz.
-
My dad has Tunnel of Love in the attic, but I'm not a big fan of that one. All the Springsteen vinyl I've managed to find have been either albums I already have or Working on a Dream. PT and Rush vinyl are what I'm really looking for right now.
EDIT: just checked Burning Shed and LBS is available on vinyl! FUCK YES *buys*
DOUBLE EDIT: Oh fuck me this is expensive. Not using my debit card for anything for a while after this. Yeesh.
-
Oh crap I want this a lot, but I dunno if I can justify it... But it's frigging LBS on vinyl! *orders*
-
I own a good 30 records. I love going to used record stores and finding great deals. My most prized record right now is my mexican pressing on Led Zeppelin 1. Such good condition..

Holy crap, that's a lot. How is LBS? Also, is Big Whiskey good on vinyl? It doesn't seem like a natural fit for it but I can imagine some tracks, specifically LITHOG, being great.

LBS is great! The packaging itself on that vinyl is very nice too, its definitely one of those albums covers that needs to be in the 12x12 inch setup. Big Whiskey is ok, but I think it was aimed as more of a collector's item than as an actual listening medium. To be honest, I didn't notice any significant difference between the CD and the vinyl.... but then again I usually don't on newer releases.
-
Nice, I'm still not regretting spending so much on it, which can only be a good thing. :D I really want to get my hands on a Before These Crowded Streets vinyl, I'm sure that would be incredible on it.
-
The only album I have on vinyl is Operation Mindcrime. :\
-
Vinyl got brought up today in Music Theory, and my teacher disagrees with the statement that vinyl sounds better than than CD/digital. I have no personal standpoint on this, because I have vinyl, but haven't had a working record player set up in a while.

The 30th anniversary version I've got sounds pretty fantastic to me, but then again, I haven't got a 1973 version to compare it to...

I've found that it's pretty subjective and depends on what it is you're listening to. Sometimes vinyl sounds better to me, other times CD sounds better. I think that if you've got a good condition vinyl on a high quality turntable with the right amplification equipment, then the vinyl will usually sound better. The problem is that most people don't have all those things...
-
I second the initial rec for Mr. Cheapos. I go there all the time, I love that place. I have over 100 vinyls myself and listen to them fairly often. Great stuff!

Sat down with my dad yesterday night, played the LPs of DSOTM and Animals. I think I can hear some positive differences in sound, AND there's just way more charm to it. Yup, vinyl is awesome.
-
I'm not going to enter the "who has the most vinyl" contest because I grew up in the 70's and all of my original stuff is vinyl anyway. But I did buy a new turntable last year and yes, I do listen to my vinyl sometimes. Actually, not a lot, but sometimes. It's awesome.

The reason I have a list is because I go record shopping often and I sometimes forget which ones I already own. :lol

I don't think I realized you were a fellow Long Islander. What part of the island are you in?
-
My parents have tons of good stuff, but personally I only own DSOTM, 2112, Moving Pictures, Permanent Waves, Signals, and some The Beatles.

I'm from Oakdale, which is a small hamlet in Islip, Suffolk County.

Vinyl got brought up today in Music Theory, and my teacher disagrees with the statement that vinyl sounds better than than CD/digital. I have no personal standpoint on this, because I have vinyl, but haven't had a working record player set up in a while.
I don't think I can form a solid opinion on this because I haven't compared quality for all of my albums, but I have to say when I put on Opeth's My Arms, Your Hearse for the first time, it sounded a thousand times better than I ever remembered it.
EDIT: Oh. My. God. I just opened my Act III vinyl, and its WHITE. I had no idea. AWESOME.

Thats Act I and II, not Act III you nub.

Apparently 14 hour work days + drinking lots of wine impairs my reading skills. I blame the Roman Numeral system. I's and II's look way too much like III's for my taste. Damn Romans.

Mah Collection:
67. Rush Rush 1974
All of them First editions except for the Rolling Stones one
Where'd you land a first edition of that?!?! Isn't that worth like a ridiculous amount of money?
I've got one of those (Rush Moon 100s). The run anywhere from $350 to $700.
There are also Red labels that are likely more rare than the Moon pressings, but not too many people know about those (I've got a few of those too.). Those were the transition Mercury pressings between the Moon and Buildings and Trees label Mercury pressings.
-
Just found a copy of Houses of the Holy. I am happy.
-
Man, you guys would just cry if you saw my vinyl. Everything by Zeppelin, original covers with all the fold-outs and inserts; I even saved the little stickers they put on the shrink wrap and keep them in the sleeves. All Queen studio albums. Every Yes album up through 90125. The first six Kansas albums, the first 11 Chicago albums, most of The Beatles.
Sorry, had to brag. What's the point in having a sweet collection if you can't wave it in people's faces once in a while?

the cool thing was that I found that record on some outdoor market with second hand stuff.
I looked at the thing and was like: AAAAAAAAAAAARRGGHH!!!!!
and then bought it for like 5 bucks.

Just got my new record player. My old one had tons of pitch problems, and half the time, the right speaker would drone horribly. Just a few days ago, it went from half the time to all of the time. Blasting Escape right now. Journey gets a bad rap sometimes. Great band.
-
Journey is good stuff. The earlier stuff was more adventurous musically, but I have to admit that the Perry-era stuff was always well-produced and sounds awesome. A lot of talent in that band, so even if most of it was radio-friendly pop, it was damned good radio-friendly pop.

Very nice!

I still need to buy a record player, I have several vinyls just sitting round :sadpanda:
-
I grew up with dad's vinyl collection as my main source of music, it has shaped my music taste since day one. I took over them when he passed away, but I don't have a record player to play them on (his was broken during the later years). I have most of them on CD nowadays, but it would be cool to be able to dust them off and play them again - like in the old days. My younger brother has shown interest in getting a record player and start to collect some good old classic albums (60s and 70s), hopefully that can be a hobby we can share together.
My LP collection includes such albums as:
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
The Who - Odds & Sods, My Generation
Rolling Stones - Dirty Work, Steel Wheels, some hits collection
Status Quo - Quo, Piledriver, Blue For You, On The Level
And lots of singles/EPs, mainly from The Beatles. That's where my Beatlemania came from.
-
If I can find my 10" red vinyl album for Rush Red Sector A and the picture album of Eddie in a cockpit for Aces High I will. I think they are still at my parents house.

I've got that Awake album (and some other Dream Theater vinyl) myself.
There isn't much in the way of Rush vinyl I don't have. But one obvious piece I'm missing is the first single from 1973.
I've got that Red Sector A 10" as well.
I have a ton of Marillion vinyl too.

Orbert, I read somewhere that Jimmy Page had the phrase "Do What Thou Wilt" (Aleister Crowley-ism) inscribed into the vinyl (next to the circular label) on the 1st pressing of Led Zeppelin III. I fished out my old copy (purchased sometime between 1973-75), shone it under a lamp and sure enough, there it was! :hat
-
Now I have to check, too. I don't know if it's a first pressing, but it does have the wheel with the cutouts.

Crying right now. I only have their stuff through to Chicago V, excluding the massive live album. I'll continue getting the next albums next week when I can.
-
The massive live album, Chicago at Carnegie Hall was the first record album I ever owned.
In 1975, I was in junior high and it was time to start acquiring my own music. One of my friends and I were listening to the radio, it was a song by Chicago and I told him I thought they were pretty cool, with the horns and stuff. He said his sister had bought their live album but didn't like it. She tried to sell it to him for five dollars, but he didn't have the funds. I gave him a fiver on the spot and told him to go talk to her for me. I had a newspaper route that netted me $20 a week. I don't think any of my friends had jobs yet.
Anyway, I got the original box with all four records and the huge picture book for five bucks. There were two posters that came in the box too, but those weren't included as they were already on her bedroom walls. But that was the start of my vinyl collection. Original Chicago was jazzy, bluesy, and almost prog-like with their extended instrumentals and nonstandard arrangements. I listened to that album non-stop for weeks. Then I picked up Chicago V and Chicago VI.
-
I just expanded my small collection with The Dear Hunter's albums:
- Transatlantic - SMPTe - Collector's edition bought at the Whirld tour.
- Transatlantic - Bridge Across Forever - Collector's edition bought at the Whirld tour.
- Transatlantic - The Whirlwind - Collector's edition bought at the Whirld tour.
- The Dear Hunter - Act I & II
- The Dear Hunter - Act III
Next step: I gotta get me some Pink Floyd.

Wow!.. Well I'm glad I know a person into Chicago. They made music that sounded like an era, and whenever I put on one of their albums it's like blast to the past. It's just fuckin' cool. :D
-
Yeah, they don't get nearly the respect they do, because most people only know them from their hits with Pete Cetera ("If You Leave Me Now" and "25 or 6 to 4"). As with so many bands, the hits do not even hint at the goodness on the albums. The first five albums are all incredible, and really, every album with Terry Kath is at least good, though I'll admit things got shaky later as Cetera's star was starting to rise and Lamm had run out of songs.
-
Ordered "Relayer" and "Yesshows" on vinyl. I had been looking for them everywhere but I could never find them. eBay solved that. :hat

Agreed. So I forgot to mention they made some cool albums covers :D like the original logo in the foreground while the background was always interesting. If you lay them all out, it's like a landscape or something lol.

Guys! I found a copy of Wish You Were Here today!
I AM SO FUCKING HAPPY RIGHT NOW.
EDIT: and a copy of Aqualung, the disc in better condition than WYWH...for $3. Spent a total of $10 on amazing music today.

This. DSOTM is godly on vinyl. That's where I heard it first, and nothing else compares. I heard WYWH on CD, but when I heard the vinyl, I was taken aback. There's something about vinyl that does it for me with certain albums.
As for Opeth, you have chosen wisely.

Crap, I really thought Shine would be smileysome in vinyl :( I want it mostly because of that one song.

how does MAYH sound on wax? doesn't seem that easy to find outside of the ridiculous wooden box set.
-
Its a huge improvement over the CD sound. Nothing wrong with it, but the LP just sounds so much thicker and more brutal.
-
Yeah it was between that one and this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-PL-990-2-Speed-Automatic-Turntable/dp/B00009QORL
EDIT: Actually the Audio Technica one I was looking at was this:
https://www.amazon.com/Technica-AT-LP60-Automatic-Driven-Turntable/dp/B002GYTPAE/ref=pd_cp_e_1
-
Yeah that second one was what I was thinking of when I mention $100 cheap ones.
-
If you're looking to spend a little more, this one is pretty great too. Upgraded from a cheaper model about a year ago and I've been loving it so far -

Bumpage because I'm trying to organize my music collection and create backups for all my physical stuff in order to avoid too much wear on them but I dont know what to do with vinyls. Do you guys just download Jack Sparrow versions of your vinyls or do you backup them by connecting the turntable to the computer and creating a new file?
-
You can often get some pretty good vinyl rips from torrent websites. I have a USB capable turntable but I've never used the feature. What is the reason for backing up vinyls? It's not like a CD where the backup can be burned onto a blank to make an exact replica. From what I've seen vinyls are pretty robust. They're made to be played and played often! I don't have any hesitation breaking one out...even the 'expensive' ones.
-
I get the vinyls mostly for sentimental reasons, I like to have the albums I really like in a bigger format where the art is prominent. Of course, I also love their sound but I don't want to risk damaging the vinyls and for everyday use I prefer to listen to CDs or FLACs since it's less of a hassle than playing a vinyl and switching sides every 4 songs. I mostly play them when I'm not going to do anything else and I just want to focus on the music.
Will check those sites to see what they have, thank you!
-
Hmm good point. It could also be useful when you have a vinyl of a rare album and you can't find any good download links. In that case a USB turntable is quite useful. They normally have some corresponding software available on the manufacturers site, but my experience with Numaks is that it's quite fidgety. I don't really worry about lossless listening on my computer as with my current set-up there wouldn't be much different between v0 and a usb vinyl rip. There is that characteristic warmness, but I wouldn't go through the effort just for that. :)

I love vinyl. Buying a record player was the best 30 Euro's I've spent. Ever.
My collection:

I do not have a record player, although I am the mentality who would happily collect vinyl. I love having the physical product, and my first listen through any album is accompanied by reading through all the notes and looking at the artwork. Also, let's face it, when it comes to the artwork, vinyl is THE BEST. It's a decent size for the pictures, and you can see all the little details in the cover.
So no, I don't collect vinyl, but a large part of me really thinks I should.
-
Just stopping by to say I love vinyls. :D
-
Me too! I don't have a shitload but I am slowly building up the collection. Got my first new one recently:

Damn. I saw Ruben on a market a couple of weeks ago. But it was too expensive, something like 60 or 70 bucks.
How much did you pay for it?
-
Goddamn! It was only $10. The Ponty/Zappa one was the most expensive of those at $20. So fucking cool!

I bought a record player recently, along with some records. I now own an amazing collection of 8 LPs. Just ordered a phono preamp from amazon so I'll be able to use the record player on my amp who does not have phono input.. Waiting for both that and ADTOE on vinyl in the mail!

Yeah, they're great. I love how you've got the more serious folks selling the expensive stuff but you can also get a decent record for $2 if you don't mind it not being perfect.
-
My record player doesn't work anymore so now I cry myself to sleep every night with my iPod blasting 128kb/s mp3 files through $5 earbuds.

Damn son, that is tragic. I hope it gets fixed.

I was just getting into vinyl and was going to buy one pretty. I'm just popping into this thread to ask, what kind of "accessories" are necessary for a turntable? If you JUST buy a turntable, does it come with speakers? And if you have to buy speakers, do you have to buy "turntable-compatible" speakers or does anything pretty much work?
So...what I've gathered is that I need:
1. Turntable device
2. Speakers
3. An amp (which I originally thought was just a giant speaker, but oh well...)
4. A subwoofer
5. ???
-
The amplifier is the "main" component of a music system - it's the module that receives the signal from all other modules (CD, tape, auxiliary input, etc) and to which the speakers are connected. You can think of it as a CPU or computer tower - all peripherals (mouse, keyboard) are connected to it giving it input data and it produces some output data (speakers and monitor).
The basic setup is Turntable -> Amplifier -> Headphones/Speakers. Some amplifiers do not have a specific turntable input though (Called PHONO) so you have to build a preamp which is a device that will convert the turntable signal to something your amplifier can understand. In this case, you would have a Turntable -> Preamp -> Amplifier -> Headphones/Speakers setup.
-
Thanks!
So uh...I don't have any idea wtf I'm looking at.
Could you recommend a cheap "starter" set? I don't need the perfect home theater system or anything....just two good speakers with strong bass.
-
I'm gonna wait for someone more experienced for recommendations, I don't really know much about this topic :-\
-
H, just search on amazon for one that is in your price range and has good reviews. That's really the best way to start.
Also stay away from USB turntables (note: not turntables that also have USB, I mean turntables that are primarily USB input tables, made by companies like ION, etc.) The general idea is that they use needles that can damage your records.

SO JELLY. I would love to have that on vinyl.
While we're on the subject, Blue Train is a fantastic album and more people should hear it.

I'd still kill for it.

I just thought of something. Why does vinyl play in stereo? What gives it that potential? Does the needle pick up each side of the groove separately?
-

Nope, the needle picks up the grooves in different directions instead of just up/down.

Actually yes. The description on wikipedia is pretty much exactly what I said.

In that case you explained it poorly. I thought you meant just left/right movement on one axis and it picked up the left and right sides/walls of the groove (which wouldn't really work given how the needle reads sound).
-
Er, maybe I've still got it backwards. But I'm thinking inner/outer sides of the groove and not left/right.

Lately I've been developing an obsession for Vinyl. When I go to the record store there's just something that drags me down to the Vinyl-section, despite the fact that I don't own a player for it. It just has something magical, and I must buy a Vinyl-player so that I can start collecting it. While I will still continue picking up CDs, they aren't that "special". They are great because you can play them in the car, but unless they have a special packaging or something that makes them interesting, a normal CD-case with a CD in it doesn't feel very interesting. Meanwhile Vinyl just has something.
Problem is that I have no idea where to start, because there's a jungle of Vinyl-players out there. Big range in price, and I have no idea if there are any particular "features" or whatever that I should get. Some people rave about turntables, but hey.. I'm no Skrillex. :lol
Honestly though, if someone here knows a lot about players, I would love some minor tips on what to look for.

The idea of having a vinyl collection is really cool to me, but they're such a fucking pain in the ass (and costly) that I really can't be bothered to deal with them.

Thanks! I started at Christmas, and I don't have a massive amount to spend as a student. :lol

I get what you mean. Personally I would use Vinyl as more of a "get the albums I love the most" kind of thing. I wouldn't buy just any album I like (and already have on CD), but slowly collecting the ones I think are worth owning on Vinyl.
-
If an album is made for vinyl (classic rock, SW stuff), then I'll get the vinyl and not the CD. Since vinyls are so expensive, I really don't buy random albums, but only albums I've heard before and really enjoy.
5.1 surround overrides vinyl though. If I own the surround version then I don't see a point for vinyl.

I have a 130 records right now. I started collecting in November, I just head out to Cheapo

I will most likely buy my first player tomorrow, really excited. :)
Not sure if the names/numbers will mean much to someone outside of Sweden (since I'm not sure how huge the brands are), but what I'm getting is a player called: "Pro-ject Essential" (pretty cheap, but apparently very nice sound). It will cost me about 2400 SEK, which is roughly ~270 €. I'm also getting an amplifier called "DENON PMA-510AE" for around 1800 SEK, which is about ~205 €, and lastly I'll get the speakers called: "Argon 6210S", for 900 SEK which is about ~102 €.
Sadly I don't really have an enormous budget to spend on a massive system, but since this will be my first, I'm very excited. :)
My room isn't very big, so in this case I think it's good because the sound will probably sound better in my small room, then in a big living room for example. I don't know, complete newbie. :lol
I already know the first Vinyls I'm gonna order as well. :)
-
Great, congratulations! BTW, make sure your amplifier has a "PHONO" input, otherwise you will have to buy a preamp to be able to connect the record player (i.e. record player -> preamp > amplifier "AUX" input instead of record player -> amplifier "PHONO" input).
-
Yeah, I'm fairly sure it does, though I will check it in store. I believe the Phono-output is also called "RIAA" or something, unless I have it mixed up with some other thing. Though the latter is something it must have as well. :P
-
I bought a turntable and amp on Wednesday :metal

Now it's time to buy up dollar vinyl...
-
Flea markets, dude. Always a great place for vinyl. You can find some really cool stuff at them.
-
Just bought my first vinyl yesterday. I found SFAM at Vintage Vinyl in St. Louis while I was visiting a friend. I just need a player so I can listen and start finding other vinyls as well. :)
-

that may be a bad thing – in relation to vinyl, "RIAA" as an output may refer to the RIAA Curve, a specific EQ setting used to boost the reduced spectral areas (and, indeed, to reduce those areas when the audio is being cut into grooves). would seem weird to output the non-compensated audio, but then, if you can buy vinyl-specific preamps, maybe they'd take care of it...
-
Bought the amplifier and speakers during the weekend, bought the turntable itself yesterday, but it took some time to set up, but now it's all done. (the needle and finding the balance took some time, plus I'm a newbie)
But I test played one of my dad's records and it sounds really good. Will probably spin my first and only vinyl (so far) tomorrow if I have time, for those interested I bought Pain of Salvation - Road Salt One very cheap at the record store here, new copy as well. (I don't really buy used stuff, unless I have no other choice or special cases)
The turntable itself is a "Pro-Ject Essential", and I feel very happy with it so far.

I'm seriously considering giving up vinyl. I can't find anything where I live and I've had a couple of surprises with internet purchases... one of TDH's was slightly damaged in the packaging (the vinyl itself is OK) but I also got Anathema's WHBWH special edition which included a 7 inch single and that one came straight broken in half. If I can't buy anything physically and internet purchases are a coin toss, what's the point? I may sell all of this (except maybe Chuckles which holds sentimental value) and spend that money expanding my CD collection.
-
I order most of my vinyl over the web, and I get what you mean. I've only had bad luck twice with the corners being slightly bent, but it's frustrating. However, I love vinyl way too much to let go of it.

Nice collection, the Wilsons reminded me I forgot to add Storm Corrosion to mine. I should have got the Road Salt Two vinyl when I was in the Opeth/POS concert but I hadn't heard it yet at that point (except the concert songs) and I didn't know I would end up liking it so much.
And yeah I get what you say, the excitement when you pick up a new vinyl is greater than that of CD's or DVD's for me, but the Anathema fiasco really bothered me. I guess it will be pretty hard to sell this stuff anyway (even though the Transatlantics and the Color Spectrum are limited editions) so I may just wait until I'm no longer bummed out by this and then start collecting again. Right now, I really don't feel like investing more money on vinyl.
-
One thing I can think of, is to order a vinyl through a recordstore instead of over the net. If it turns up damaged, it's easier to go to the store and show it/explain the situation and have them send it back for a new one, instead of arguing with someone over the web. :P
I'd love to have RS2 on vinyl actually. Storm Corrosion is great, but I haven't picked it up on vinyl yet sadly. Not sure if you heard, but TPE is getting released on vinyl soon (in September I believe?) so should pick it up. :P
-
Does that stand for The Perfect Element? If so, I haven't heard it. The only POS I've heard are the Road Salts and I like them (especially the second one). I gave Remedy Lane a try once and I didn't particularly enjoy it so I don't know if the rest of their discography is suited for me, I got kinda tired of the whole prog metal thing a while ago.
-
Double post, let's use it to discuss your online vinyl sources. Until now I've ordered either from the band's sites (good experience), the Omega Order (bad experience with the Anathema stuff) and cduniverse dot com (mostly good experience, the only bad thing was the damaged corner on TDH's Act 3). What do you guys use?
-
I use Ebay and Amazon mostly. For some reason most of my vinyl has been through Ebay and Amazong has been more CD's, but I like both. Funny enough, I also have some bad experience with The Omega Order, they didn't seem too careful when it came to packaging, so my products got to suffer sadly. I've also used bands own websites from time to time, but that is mostly when a new album is coming out and there's a good bundle-deal or something. Generally I try to check the product on all three sites (their own, ebay and amazon) and see how much difference there is.
And yeah, TPE is The Perfect Element, IMO their best. While I understand if you're "bored" of Progressive Metal, I can still very much recommend it. I'm not the biggest prog metal-fan either anymore, but PoS are one of the bands that has something really good. You can always check the album out and if it sounds cool then consider buying it. :P It's a nice chance to get it physically on vinyl.
-
My vinyl collection currently stands at In The Court Of The Crimson King and Storm Corrosion.
I guess I'm a little behind.
-
I've got:
Mono - Hymm to the Immortal Wind
Sigur Ros - Valtari
Bon Iver - Bon Iver
plus a whole heap of old King Crimson/Jethro Tull/Supertramp/Pink Floyd ones I've been given by relatives.
-
So, just went through my dad's Vinyl collection a bit. He has some great stuff. He used to have a player, but in the last 10 years or so he hasn't bought a new one (the old one is broken) and his vinyl has mostly been stored.
I've only gone through a small portion of his collection, but these are some vinyl I found, and they're all in fantastic condition, all are stored in plastic sleeves and have virtually no marks on them:
*Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
*Pink Floyd - The Wall
*Pink Floyd - The Final Cut
*Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
*Genesis - Selling England By the Pound
*Rush - Grace Under Pressure
*Rush - Power Windows
*Rush - Hold Your Fire
*Neil Young - Freedom
*Neil Young - Life
*Neil Young - Live Rust
*The Who - Quadrophenia
Out of these I've only really heard Live Rust and Grace Under Pressure, but I just couldn't resist picking the others out as well. He also had Marillion - Script For a Jester's Tear (though I'm not a fan of Fish), some ELO-vinyl and also two vinyl with Yes, but it wasn't two of their more known one. It was 90125 and Big Generator.
So yeah, thought I would share. He has another box with vinyl here in our closet, but it's up on a shelf and ways loads, so I'll see if I can get it down. He also has several boxes down in our cellar, so I might check that out later.
-
Cool stuff!
-
I don't think I've updated my collection in this thread since Christmas. Well allow me to do so:
Bright Eyes-Digital Ash in a Digital Urn
Mastodon-Leviathan
Rush-Moving Pictures (!!!!)
I think the only albums from my top ten that I'm missing on vinyl are Frengers, In Keeping Secrets, and Images & Words.
-
Can you guess my age? ;)
For maaaany years, I did not buy any vinyl, but re-starting now. It's more a collector's thing than actually putting the vinyl on, though.

So I finally got a turntable setup, I'm loving it so far. Here's what I've got:
Steven Wilson - Raven that Refused...
Jucifer - За Волгой для нас земли нет
Dog Fashion Disco - Adultery
Chelsea Wolfe - Pain is Beauty
Giant Squid - The Icthtyologist
Elliott Smith - Either/Or
Thus far, Jucifer was really the album that blew me away sound-wise. RTRTS and PIB were both wonderful (as expected). Really though, everything's been awesome. Pics to come.
-
My own small collection:
Asia - Asia
Between The Buried and Me - The Great Misdirect
Genesis - Selling England By The Pound
Genesis - Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
Genesis - Duke
Boston - Boston
Yes - Big Generator
Yes - Fragile
Frank Zappa - In New York
Rush - Rush
Rush - Fly By Night
Rush - Caress of Steel
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of The Moon
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Emerson Lake and Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery
and a bunch more that I cant remember at the moment

Finally got around to buying a cabinet especially for my vinyl. Here it is, I'm really pleased, it makes it much easier to just take out a record and play it.

Nice! :tup
-
Might as well bump this, just got my first turntable and loving it. I only have three LP's, DT12, an original 1977 pressing of Seconds Out by Genesis and the $5.98 Garage Days Re-Revisited by Metallica (yeah, the rare one). All sounding great.
Going to a huge record fair on Sunday and hoping to bulk up the collection. Apparently Jimmy Page (who lives locally) goes to this record fair every time it's on to look for old Zeppelin bootlegs. I'll look out for him
-
Congratulations!
an original 1977 pressing of Seconds Out by Genesis
Awesome! My first Genesis album, and still one of my favorites.
-
It sounds great, obviously it's the original master, so nothing digital ever touched it! It's so dynamic!
-
I lost all my vinyl in a house fire. I had a ton of my favourite albums on vinyl, most of the Genesis records and had just bought a copy of So that I didn't even get to spin.
This thread makes me sad. :(
-
I love vinyl, still my favorite medium especially with a good set of headphones. To me CDs,and digital music just does not sound the same.Check out some new vinyl 180,or 200 Gram you will see what I mean.Just got a copy on SFAM the other day blows my mind!
-
The Moonsorrow box set has landed, this is what it looks like for the 'Die Hard' version, which is the most extensive and expensive.
The one I got does not have the t-shirt, and the vinyl is splattered colours.
I'm buying my new Rega 3 turntable today :)

I was stupid enough to leave all my vinyl with my ex when we split up, it was only about 20 records but it was rare Satriani, Vai etc. :'(
So no all I have is Steve Vai Passion & Warfare and Music from the Motion Picture Untitled (Almost Famous)

My newest purchases:

-
Oh, and who recognizes the 5 vinyls on display? :hat
-
Beardfish's +4626-COMFORTZONE, Helloween's Pink Bubbles Go Ape (the one near it looks like Transatlantic's Kaleidoscope), PT's In Absentia, and the lower one is awfully familiar though I can't remember what it is now.

Yeah, this I had no chance of guessing.

I'm thinking of making a list and maybe talking about in a video and in my blog about albums that have not been released on Vinyl, but I would love to see.
That being said, among some others recently, I finally got
Kevin Gilbert - Thud
Apes and Androids - Golden Prize/Riverside colored 7".
-
Bumping this thread. . . What turntable do you guys have. I'm looking to buy one, I have a bunch of records but no record player. Any recommendations?
-
When it comes to audio equipment, I've always sworn by Sony, because it has never let me down and is good quality stuff. I'm on my second Sony turntable. The first one lasted like 30 years.
-
My gf got me a really nice record player for Christmas (I know because they delivered it to the house with a packing label on the box). I've been listening to it and it's crazy how different the few vinyls I have sound. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with the environment is that I'm listening to it is.
Anyway, I made a massive spreadsheet of albums I want to get on vinyl, this is going to take time and money :lol
-
A lot of it has got to do with the quality of the pressing and the mastering, not taking into account your own equipment of course :P
-
well whatever it is I'm hooked.

Not sure if there's a more recent thread for vinyl discussion, but I'll revive this. My fiancé just surprised me with a wonderful gift! A new turntable and some powered speakers. As someone who eventually wants to get a receiver and have the whole setup, this is going to be a great start and will last me quite a few years. She found an insane deal on the ATLP120 and Klipsch R15PM powered speakers, and I must say, they sound wonderful.
I used to have a ATLP60 but got so frustrated with it due to its multitude of issues (mine, at least), so this feels like a nice upgrade. Luckily, I already have a decent collection of vinyl to play, so I'm excited.
Anyone else have any fun stuff they want to share?

I'm a vinyl guy too! I don't have an amazing turntable or speakers, but it sounds good to me. I'm a student, so I live in an apartment where I can't crank it up to 100 all the time anyway.
I do, however, spend like all of my money on vinyl. My collection is around 900 albums strong now, and includes a lot of limited and rare stuff, some of which I'm very proud of.
Examples:

https://www.discogs.com/de/Mark-Knopfler-The-Ragpickers-Dream/release/3023609
I always take at least one LP to concerts, hoping to get some autographs (yeah I'm one of those guys). Sometimes it works :) So I have quite a few vinyls signed too.

That's awesome, I started getting into months ago when my finance got me a turn table. I don't have much of a collection but here it is:

Hello guys,
I have a question for all the vinyl fans here, and I hope that someone can help me.
I own a Denon DP-300F turntable. After 7 years of heavy usage, the needle broke a few days ago. I googled which needle would be okay to order to replace it and finally ordered one called DSN 85 ( https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00FEFMVAS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ).
After attaching it, I put a record on and at first, it sounded great. But after like 30-60 seconds, I noticed a noise on the right speaker. Whenever I take the needle off, wait for 3 minutes and put it back on, it sounds good again. But after a minute it comes back. It sounds like a loose contact or something and it gets worse the longer the record is playing. And it's driving me crazy!
Has anyone experienced something like this and can tell me where the problem is? Is it just the needle that is shitty and should I return it? Or could this be some kind of cable problem?
Thanks in advance.
-
I haven't replaced the needle on my cartridge yet but it sounds like it's a loose contact to me. Have you tried re-installing the needle? I would find it hard to believe the needle is bad because it's ok for the first minute or so.
-
Loose contact is my first thought as well. I was concerned when you kept calling it the "needle". Typically it's the "stylus" or if it's all one assembly it's often referred to as the "cartridge" (but a lot of people just call it the needle anyway :xbones). My concern was because a free-standing stylus (or whatever they're called) is much more fragile and much more a pain in the ass to replace. I don't read German but it looks like the the DSN 85 is the whole cartridge assembly, which should be a simple replacement, so I'm thinking something inside the cartridge is loose. Hopefully you can return/replace it.
-
Thanks for the answers guys. I'm sorry about the word "needle", that's literally how you call it in German though ;)
Now, I just uninstalled everything around my turntable, including the cartridge, unplugged everything and reinstalled everything for one last time - prepared to totally freak out and smash everything in my apartment into a million pieces after still hearing that weird noise.
I might never know what the problem was... but now it works. After requesting a return-sticker from Amazon and ordering a different cartridge from another website :lol Anyway, I hope it stays that way.
Thanks for your help  I will now listen to no-man - Together We're Stranger on vinyl!
-
Cool that the problem seems to be fixed! Too bad you'll probably never figure out what it was. Life is full of disappointments, but at least it's a "good" unexplainable thing and not a "bad" unexplainable thing, which would really be annoying.
I hadn't considered the language barrier, even though the German site should've clued me in. As a former aspiring audio snob, I remember audio snobs back in the 70's and 80's discussing at length the difference between "needle" and "stylus" and "cartridge" and I guess it stuck with me. I always try to use the term which provides distinction wherever possible; I just hadn't considered that there might not be such a distinction in other languages.

I'm almost pulling the trigger in buying a turntable setup (Fluance RT85) with a Schiit Mani preamp
I'm also looking into getting this standalone CD player (probably will sell the speakers).
Denon D-M41 Home Theater Mini Amplifier and Bookshelf Speaker Pair
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B072635J3H/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_4?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
As far as speakers go, I'm tempted to get some Klipsh, but I'm decided if I should get the active or passive...Would need to connect both the turntable with the amp and CD player.
Which speakers would go best with this setup? Active or passive?
https://www.klipsch.com/bookshelf-speakers (R-41 or R51)
-
I would go with passive since you'll a preamp so you'll be able to drive the speakers. I'd love to hear what you think of the Klipsch speakers. I'm looking at getting some better speakers for my turntable.

Finally pulled the trigger for my office setup. Denon DM-41 Mini Home Office System; Schiit Mani Phono Amp and Project EVO DC with the Sumiko Rainier MM phono cartridge

Nice.
Never even thought about having a stand for the vinyl I am playing. Will immediately go after that.
I own the same Denon set (but have my vinyl player connected to an old Denon microset, the m41 is for gaming, CDs and spotify). For most things I like the Denon speakers (I came from an Edifier R1700BT active set). The most easy upgrade in my opinion is a (small) subwoofer. If you happen to change speakers, keep in mind that there is a audio filter setting in the menu called SPK OPTIMISE ,where the sound of the amp is specifically tailored to the SC-M41 speakers (which is on automatically if you buy it as a set I believe).
And while I am by no means an expert, I think CD's in combination with the HD6xx headphone sounds amazing on the Denon system (and there are gain options if you are going to use a hard to drive heaphone).
My first upgrade will be another vinyl player. I now have an entry-level Sony integrated with phone and all, but want one with more options and of higher quality.
-
Do you have a preamp for the headphones? Schiit Audio carries some nice stuff and price competitive.
What subwoofer do you have on your Denon?
-
Nice collection and setup you got there! Congratulations :metal
-
Agreed, it looks really nice!
-
I really like playing vinyl and I actually just got a second hand Technics that sounds way better than the Sony turntable I used to have.
Anyway, my kid seems to have messed things up.. the tonearm lowers too much, resulting in the stylus being pressed into the cartridge, with the cartridge resting on the vinyl. I get a few seconds of normal play but the stylus scratches along the surface very easily, resulting in a very recognizable sound.. lol.
I checked the counterweight, but she couldn't have possibly adjusted it. Guess I'll bring it for repair soon.
-

What subwoofer do you have on your Denon?
You will not need a headphone amp. And I really don't think it is a good idea to connect an amp to another amp (a volume knob mistake can potentially damage your equipment). Same for active speakers. Basically don't connect an amp to an amp (unless it is specifically preamp to amp).
But the Denon runs the Senheiser HD6xx really well (I also own a Shiit Magni 3+ for my pc setup). For what it's worth, my audiophile dad who uses an AKG k1000 (and some other audio technica closed phones) with a Naim amp I probably can't afford was really impressed by listening to the Denon playing CD's with the HD6xx.
As for a sub. It makes the sound more well rounded and for certain genres the lower frequencies do really enhance the music. I believe the subwoofer out is a pre-out, so here you do need an active subwoofer. For most smaller speakers a certain range of low frequencies will always be compromised due to, well, physics. I am, however, not enough of an expert to really give advice. The best you can do is contact a local audio dealer and look for some advice. Or even ask Denon support themselves what are recommended subwoofer specs.
I personally bought a cheap used Yamaha (Yamaha YST FSW 150) on the Dutch, local equivalent of ebay, cost me 40 euros. I have to put this subwoofer at a very, very low volume level for music (otherwise it will overpower the music). Perhaps it is a tad too powerful for this setup, but for a cheap tryout it worked out. And oddly enough for bluetooth it sounds boomy but both CD's and digital signals via optical sound great. Not sure if I recommend my model, but for the price I paid and as a test, it worked out well enough that I will consider going for a sub that has more options (adjust filters and crossover) and is a bit smaller.

Bumping because I finally got a turntable setup
Fluance RT83
Sony RTDH190 Reciever (w/ Phono Input)
And a pair of Klipsch R-51M speakers
I've been buying vinyl for years with the intent of one day getting a turntable. Excited to finally have one :D
First record I'm spinning is The Whirlwind - Transatlantic
-
Analog is still the best.

Nice! The Fluance turntable are really good. I have an RT84, but I find myself constantly going back to my Schiit Sol turntable that I got back when they were still selling them. I'm a little sad they don't make them anymore.
-
I've got a Fluance RT85, and I think it's excellent. Well worth the money.
I bought the pre-amp on their site, and that goes into my TV home theater speakers (a pair of tower Sony speakers that half "atoms" rear speakers on top, a center speaker, and a subwoofer). Obviously this doesn't matter for a stereo format, but actually, the additional separation you get from listening in multichannel stereo is really excellent.
There's a lot of advantages of vinyl (unique sound quality, beautiful physical package, excellent used market) and some serious drawbacks (price, environmental concerns), but the big one for me is one that'd go with any non-streaming product - it meters the pace of musical exploration. I found with apps like Spotify and Tidal, there's just too much new (and new old) stuff being flung at you all the time. Nothing, to me, beats going to a record store and buying something you've never heard based on either 1.) artist's previous work or 2.) friend recommendation, making an upfront investment in it, and then going home and listening to the product until you truly feel like you've got something out of the experience.
As I type this, I'm listening to Opeth's In Claudia Venenum, which I have never heard before. I fell off Opeth like a decade ago, but the artwork of the "Connoisseur" caught me eye in the record store today. I'm listening to it now, and man, it's a glorious album that has been preserved beautifully. To make it sound even more authentically "vinyl", the band had it first transferred to tape before it was then cut to lacquer. How many bands are willing to do something special like that for a physical product?
It's just such a special way to experience music, and I'm glad I waited on this record until the time was right. Now I'm enjoying it very much, and won't forget about it or, especially, the whole experience of buying it and listening to it, any time soon.

if I could go to a Record Store in the UK, I'd be seeking

Saw the list this week. As has been the case for about 5 years now there is nothing that I am remotely interested in. I guess that's a good thing since I'm behind on my CD buying anyway.

I want to get the Steven Wilson Harmony Codex extra's and the Within Temptation promo acoustic live EP (not sure if that last one is a Dutch only thing, they are this years am ambassadors).
Last year I only got the Porcupune Tree EP with those In Absentia bonus tracks.
