Mine was Through Her Eyes. I was 13 and that was the song my friend introduced me to the band with. After that I started going through their discography on my own and Endless Sacrifice was my next jam
-
Probably Metropolis Pt. 1.
Pull Me Under was the first DT song I heard, on the radio in 1992, and it certainly intrigued me enough to buy the album, but I wouldn't say that I was in love with it.
-
Another Day.
-
PMU was the first I heard, but Surrounded was the first one I loved and made me want to explore their stuff.
-
Probably Metropolis Pt. 1.
Pull Me Under was the first DT song I heard, on the radio in 1992, and it certainly intrigued me enough to buy the album, but I wouldn't say that I was in love with it.
This. But i think it was 1995.
-
Learning to Live. My first album was Train of Thought, which I liked but did not absolutely love at the time, then I got Images and Words after hearing Pull Me Under and being intrigued, and Learning to Live was it for me. Wait for Sleep, too, but Learning to Live was the main one.
-
First song I fell in love with was Endless Sacrifice, and the first album I listened to entirely was BC&SL.
-
As I Am
My guitar teacher was a fan and he gave me the verse riff as one of my first assignments.
And that badass solo!
-
I think in was Panic Attack. It was the first song I heard by them and I was hooked instantly.
-
Pull me under on MTVs Headbangers Ball... loved it, bought the record the next day and fell in love.
Couple of months later I saw them live for the first time in a small club in Stockholm called Melody. What a show that was...
Been loving the band ever since...
-
Honestly, the first thing from DT I ever heard was that Mike Mangini audition jam video, because I wanted to check out MM's playing. I had already heard JR's solo stuff and LTE but hadn't gotten around to checking out DT yet, but that convinced me instantly. The second half of that jam, where it gets more jazzy up until the end, is magical.
-
.....Constant Motion.
It was Rock Band 2, September 2008, playing the drum track. That double kick in the intro enthralled me and I went out and bought Systematic Chaos and fell in love with the band.
Immediately after that though, I fell in love with Surrounded. Christmas 2008, I had all of my Christmas decorations up and listening to that album--it was magical. I will always remember those moments
-
Mine was the Instrumedley. I remember I was blown away by several sections of it (later I would realize those bits were the bass solo from metropolis, erotomania and the dance of eternity).
The second song I fell in love with was Endless sacrifice (from Budokan as well).
-
Pull Me Under, 1992.
-
Octavarium, in late 2008. The ending knocked me for six.
-
I liked As I Am, so I checked out ITNOG in the related videos on youtube. Instantly clicked with me and is still to this day my favourite DT song.
-
Pull Me Under, 1992.
I'd have to go with that too - it was the first.
An honorable mention goes to SoC because it was the song that brought me back to DT after kinda losing track of them.
-
Probably Endless Sacrifice or In the Name of God. Octavarium was the first album I heard, at some point between the release of it and SC, but Train of Thought was the album that really got me hooked on the band and ES & ITNOG were my early favourites.
-
The Mirror. I'm not ancient, but I'm old enough to have lived in the cassette tapes era, so what we were doing at the time before widespread CDs, Napster and all that stuff was copying each other cassettes, and rounding up the running time with whatever song(s) just to not waste the tape.
My cousin was more advanced in his musical tastes at the time, so he sneaked DT songs at the end of the cassettes he was making for me, I remember he put Hollow Years and Anna Lee (at the time, the newest easy ballads) and on another cassette he placed The Mirror; I spent 4 months or so listening to it, and finally it clicked... I liked the song... I loved the song... and well, long story short, it was the avalanche effect that led me to love Dream Theater's music.
All of this was happening during the spring / summer of 1999, I didn't even had internet at the time, but I became a very devoted fan and somehow I got notion that on a certain day (ironically, exactly 16 years ago) the new Dream Theater album was going to be released, and I already decided for a blind purchase on release day.
So, again: it was 1999, without internet all I knew was the release day of the new DT album, and I walked into the store knowing exactly that.
I'll let you figure out the rest :D
-
Considering that WDaDU was my first album (bought 3 months after it was released), I'd say the first DT song I fell in love with was TOWHtStS, which was my favorite track from that album for many years.
-
Pull Me Under, 1992.
I reckon this is true for most of us old fans. I was in a trance the first time I heard that song. So different and unique and THAT
DRUMMER!
Same story I've told too many times but after hearing that on the late night FM station that introduced new music I ran
directly to the local record store the next day and bought the album.
-
The first song that caught my attention was Another Day. My father used to play a lot of music, and he bought WDADU when the was released, and every subsequent album after that.
I bought a compilation album for myself which contained Another Day. The album was a collection of power ballads (I was 15 at the time!) https://www.discogs.com/Various-Even-More-Power-Ballads/release/2488544. When ACOS was released, my father played it to death in the car. So that was probably the one that made me a fan. Although, Falling Into Infinity cemented it. SFAM was my first "new dream theater".
-
Pull Me Under in (I think) 2009. I raped that song and then did same with SFAM. I think my favorite song was Home.
-
Something from I&W. Metropolis I think.
-
Panic Attack. They had me when the drums kicked in.
-
Hmm, First song I heard was Honor Thy Father ages ago, thought the drums were impressive but it didn't hook me just introduced me to something a bit different. A couple years later I get exposed to SC on a car trip without knowing any of the songs or having much memory of anything specific. Next year I get exposed to Constant Motion and Pull Me Under through Rock Band and Guitar Hero then another year or so later Panic Attack. Another couple of years pass and I hear A Rite of Passage on a preview for my media player and I recognise the band name and think "god damn it I really should check these guys out properly as I keep stumbling onto them". I proceed to find BC&SL, their latest album, A Nightmare to Remember begins, by the time beautiful agony section comes on I'm in love. So I guess that was the song that made me click. :hat
-
Already posted this on another thread, but The Root Of All Evil was the first DT song I heard & I LOVED it (especially the chorus). :hefdaddy
-
Pull Me Under, 1992.
-
Stream of Consciousness, this the first DT song i ever heard, and the first song i can play on guitar...
-
In the Name of God (2005-2006). Then I bought Train of Thought and Octavarium.
-
Take the Time. I really appreciated some of the instrumental passages of the band before, but that's the point where it all suddenly clicked for me as a whole (and especially with regards to James' singing).
-
I heard the epic Octavarium first, about 9 years ago. I was still a young teenager back then. I was hugely into Kerrang/Scuzz so when I heard this it completely blew my mind and has changed the way I approach music entirely. I am now obsessed with prog and am a much much better guitarist as I went from learning power chords to ITPOE/ITNOG so it's had a major impact on my music life. They're also of course now my favourite band! One of the most beneficial things I've ever done!
-
Funny thing is that I had 2 bands lead me to Dream Theater. First, I loved Greenday very much and they led me to Avenged Sevenfold. I had the song Nightmare by A7X on my Ipod, but I didn't listen to it that much. It was when I payed attention to the song, I realized the drummer was Mike Portnoy and I searched up the members and found out that Portnoy was with Dream theater so I checked them out. I downloaded all their albums, starting with the latest, which was BC&SL and the first song, A nightmare to remember drew me into Dream Theater. So, ANTR was my favorite Dream Theater song and I worked my way back albums.

Fatal Tragedy.

Stream of Consciousness, this the first DT song i ever heard, and the first song i can play on guitar...
Welcome to the forum! :metal
-
Mine was Stream of Consciousness. The main riff, the incredible solos and the instrumentation are incredible!
-
Pull Me Under, 1992.
This.
-
Pull Me Under, in the spring of 1993. I bought the CD the same day I first heard the song, and I bought the VHS of Live in Tokyo only a few months later.
-
Pull Me Under, 1992.
+1
-
The Count of Tuscany... the funny thing is, before listening to it I had seen almost all of the SFNY DVD but I couldn't bring myself to like them (I was young and naive back then).
I then went on to discover A Change of Seasons, I&W (starting out with Pull Me Under, Another Day and Metropolis Part 1).
Lastly, I went back to SFAM/SFNY and I nearly exploded from the amount of awesomeness... and shame at not acknowledging it earlier.
-
My first album was WDADU in 1989... For a few months I did not like it, then it became impossible not to listen to it everyday!
My favorite at the time was Ytse Jam.
-
Imma gonna cheat..... (2 songs)
Mirror/Lie :metal :metal :metal
-
Bombay Vindaloo........ blurry memories... long time ago!!!.. Live at the marquee was the first CD I heard from DT
about a couple of month later, my brother got a copy of Images and words and I got hooked with Take the time.
-
ACOS, in 2007.
-
ACOS, 2006 :heart
-
First heard of Pull Me Under, checked out Under a Glass Moon and the intro got me hooked.
-
Dance of Eternity. A friend showed me the concert DVD and I was blown away by there skill. I bought the album and always got excited when DoE came on. I loved the whole album.
-
I first heard awake. 6.00 knocked me hard with the proggy intro but then came innocence faded with James beautiful soaring combined with a magical melody :hefdaddy
-
New member, by the way.
The Dream Theater hipsters may not be pleased, but the first song I fell in love with would have to be "Pull Me Under."
In retrospect, it drags on way too long, but the vocal hooks and melody more than make up for that.
-
Nothing wrong with liking Pull Me Under, I think many of us were partly exposed to DT from this song alone. ;)
-
No problem with PMU at all! :tup Welcome to the forum.
-
No problem with PMU at all! :tup Welcome to the forum.
Thank you ;D
-
Beneath the Surface. This incredible voice touched me in so many ways that I was totally choked up from the beginning.
-
The first for me was Surrounded. Beautiful melody, great lyrics. It was the first song that I actually felt a high listening to. That sort of giddy "Hell's yeah!" sorta feeling.
-
A Nightmare to Remember (first DT song I heard)
and then the total of Score xD
-
I had previously heard PMU on the radio and liked it, but what really got me hooked was seeing the Lie music video on The Box (public TV alternative for people whose parents were too poor/didn't care for cable). The next time it came on, I busted out my music video VHS and recorded it.
The Box got me into a lot of music. Marilyn Manson, Primus, nine inch nails, etc.
-
Back when I was taking guitar lessons (somewhere between 2005-2007), my teacher, which was a fan of prog band like DT and Tool, taught me Peruvian Skies and the easier parts of Pull me Under. At the time I thought they were cool songs. but nothing more (I was into pop punk at the timeback then)
Then fast forward to 2009, the music I'm listening to doesn't satisfy me anymore. So while I was looking through my old guitar lessons, I found the Pull Me Under and Peruvian Skies tabs my teacher had given to me. I played them on my guitar and thought it sounded cool. I then bought the greatest hits since it has both songs. Between Pull Me Under, Peruvian Skies, Home, The Root of All Evil, Sacrificed Sons and Lifting Shadows I found a band that was pretty much what I was looking for musically.
However, a few weeks later, Black Clouds & Silver Linings was released and this
A Nightmare to Remember
happened. :omg:
They've been my favorite band since then :metal
-
New Millennium.
-
Another Day - 1999 - dat solo
-
Overture 1928, 15 years ago, mind blown !
-
Pull Me Under in 92 was awesome but it was Lie in 94 that blew me away. Then when A Change of Seasons came out the following year I knew they'd be my favorite band the rest of my life.
-
1996. I was in a CD store (they had those back in the day) and stumbled across a used version of A Change of Seasons. Now, I already owned Images and Words and liked it but not enough that I had strong feelings about DTheater. And frankly, the cover versions on the album most interested me.
But I vividly recall the first time I played the 25-minute ACoS...it was clear I was going to like this song! I played the hell out of that song for the next 6 months or so. I also revisited I&W and realized I hadn't given that disc the appreciation it deserved. Soon I bought Awake and also Falling Into Infinit....and pretty much everything since.
But ACoS was definitely the song that turned me on DT and to this day it is still my favorite piece by the band.
-
I first fell in love with Pull Me Under when I heard it on the radio back in 1992. I specifically remember thinking it sounded familiar, but I didn't know why. I still don't know why, but I still love that song.
Anyway, I bought Images and Words as soon as I was able at a local music store. I love every song on that album. I didn't care for Take the Time at first, but that song eventually grew on me. I've spun that cd so many times over the years, and I'll hear it many more times before I die.
-
Went to see Qryche in Balto in 2003. Arrived during their set, not knowing that DT was the headliner that night.
Bought Six Degrees the next day.
So, I get to cheat. Loved 'Misunderstood' but hated the final 90 seconds.
So, I guess I get to say that 'Six Degrees' was the first song I fell in love with....especially 'Overture/About To Crash' and from 'Goodnight Kiss' onward.
Who in the hell made music that good back then? Or now?
Guess that's why I love 'Octavarium' and most of ADToEvents.
-
A muso mate of mine lent me I&W in late '94 or early '95, and I enjoyed it, but it was 'Surrounded' that really dragged me in. Once Awake was released and I heard that opening of 6:00, I was hooked..
-
A Nightmare To Remember and Misunderstood were the first DT songs I discovered and loved, I think at the end of 2009. I remember I started listening to BC&SL after reading an interview with the Avenged Sevenfold singer who said that BC&SL was his favourite album of the year, and then I discovered the rest of the discography over the years really slowly. Only one year ago I fully appreciated Six Degrees, I listened for years only to Misunderstood ;D
-
Under A Glass Moon!
-
The first Dream Theater song I ever listened to was Octavarium. Now, that was waaay too deep for my mind to grasp at the time (both musically and lyrically) so I really didn’t understand it. A few months later I found another song by them and instantly fell in love with it – that would be Metropolis Pt. 1. So that was the first one I really could grasp, but now I love all of their songs! :metal
-
I found about them around 2007-2008, someone showed me Hollow Years(budokan), instant boner. Then i found Tokyo G3 and few hours later, that was it ;D
-
In The Name of God
I had listened to a bunch of their songs by that time but this one stood out. It's lenght is exactly the time I need to walk from home to school and damn did this song make the walk better. Also I discovered them only last year (am 19 now) but I quickly got into them and I am a fan now.
Hope for a concert in BG this tour

Cool, that's definitely one hell of a song! I'm around your age and also been listening for only a few years as well, go figure :lol
There's nothing like the journey of becoming a Dream Theater fan. I still remember that feeling of awe going through all the albums and listening to them one by one, knowing barely anything about music beforehand. Wish I could go back to those moments!
-
That's a simple answer. The first DT song I heard in 1992 was PMU. So yeah...
-
I have a bit of a different story than a lot of people. I first heard DT in the mid to late 90s and wasn't all that impressed and don't even remember what songs I heard. Later, I felt like getting out of town and some friends were driving to Milwaukee to see DT so I went along. In the lead up to the show, I heard some of Scenes from a Memory. I didn't love it but I was intrigued and kept going back to it. My favorite music is usually composed in a minor key so when I heard Overture 1928 I was surprised I didn't hate it. I spent the next year listening to Scenes from a Memory off and on but I never really "got it" although I did appreciate it and liked a lot of the melodies and strange time signatures.
Over the next few years I scoured the used CD stores and got the rest of their catalog. My reaction to the rest was about the same. Definitely not my favorite band but I sure did like it. Then when I had it playing the background, Anna Lee came on. I had heard it before and usually skipped it but this time it finally spoke to me. I fell in love with it. Later I listened to Hollow Years and had the same reaction.
So even though I definitely like DT's heavy stuff the most now, it was actually some of their softer stuff that turned me on to them. Train of Thought came out and I finally "got it" and by the time 8V came out, I was a hardcore fan.
In summary: I've listened to DT for the better part of 15 years but for some reason only became a hardcore fan for the last 10+

Another Day.
Glad not to be alone here. I hate to admit it, but AD is to me the perfect ballad, and one of JP's top 3 solos. The way how every note counts and how perfect it fits is just amazing. And not to mention JLB's vocals are his best.
-
Mine was Octavarium. I had been listening a lot to the longer Iron Maiden songs for years. Then i started looking for more long songs, and found some in Pink Floyd, Rush and Jethro Tull. I knew i wanted long songs, and something more metal. Then i listened to Octavarium, and there is no more to say about that :hefdaddy
-
Mine was, as some other people here, In The Name of God too. :metal
I consider this song to be THE song that "saved" me from the techno genre, and set me on the path of Prog Metal, when I was much younger. :hefdaddy
-
The Dark Eternal Night
I was a big fan of Metallica and Dragonforce. This song was *designed* for me.
Not as big a fan anymore. Prefer earlier era DT stuff or lighter prog rock/fusion now, but occasionally the heavier stuff still scratches a certain itch that nothing else can.

A Fortune In Lies (in 1991 circa)
