I think it looks pretty cool ;DI don't like the new aesthetics, it looks like it was designed for use on phones and tablets, and on a 17" laptop screen I find it annoying. I can't imagine how horrible it is on a 20"+ desktop monitor. But I will probably get used to it eventually. What annoys me the most is that they went live with something that clearly should have stayed in beta for several more months. They replaced a perfectly fine, working website with one where hardly anything works as intended and that has a significant number of basic features missing. I don't understand why they couldn't continue to let the userbase use the old, working website while they were fixing up the new one, which is what they were doing at first.
Cool, now for the arduous task of finding the 10 bands out of a thousand that we don't have in common.So far I've only got 11 that I have any confidence in. :lol

It always boggles the mind when websites/software vendors release an "upgrade" that is clearly inferior to the old version in almost every way. iTunes 11 was like that and I went through all sorts of trouble (incl losing my library ratings at the time) to roll back to iTunes 10.

My tastes. For those that don't know, figure it out yourself :lol. I will do this however - if you send a band that I already know I'm not that much of a fan of (eg, Opeth, C&C), I'll warn you that you're taking a risk. Sometimes there's a reason that a certain band doesn't have many last.fm plays - it's because I think they suck, or I don't "get" them. Feel free to take that risk, but I'll forewarn you.
I will have to check my log when I get home but I own somewhere between 2000 - 2100 cd's.
DVD's I'm not sure, I probably have about 300.
Sometimes I have bought up to 20 cd's at one time.

@ the last, I can't recommend you get the other three albums enough Paul... all of them are killer. Absolutely killer. One of my better discoveries (from Nick's radio show) over the last couple of years. Worlds Untold is their first... the other three are as good, if not better.

It's nothing too intense really... just a heads up as some of you might be anticipating (hoping) to make it to the main competition - though 6 of you are going to be eliminated... that's a pretty high ratio - 40% of you are about to go buh-bye.
However... for the confident ones, the main competition will not have any firm rules or themes. The only requirement will be that everyone must send at least one ballad. I love me my ballads - be it a power ballad like I Remember You by Skid Row, or a simple acoustic or piano only track like Hardline's In This Moment. Do whatever you want, whenever you want it. Just don’t send me songs until a round starts. No squatting on your territory (band) early like we did in TAC’s.
So, if you have such a song in mind, don't use that band just yet. Since most are bitching/whining/moaning about how tough it is to find me a song (I tease), I thought I'd give the heads up now so that if by any chance you are using a band this round that has an awesome ballad, you may want to take that into consideration. I offer this because of a time (with Nick) where I submitted a Triumph song in Round 1, and then a couple rounds later, his theme was "song by a 3 member band". Boy, sure woulda been nice to have Triumph for that round! So, I don't want anyone to think "wish I woulda had that I already used band for the ballad".
There will be a couple more guidelines when the main competition starts.

Probably a bit of leeway. For instance, if Elite sends a mediocre song, he'll be aided by the fact he killed it in Round 1. If he totally shits the bed though, I got no problem putting a bullet in him.
If it comes to a close decision for the final in-or-out spot #10, then I'll definitely be taking into consideration both rounds.

No... but if I end up liking the non-ballad better, (thus that is the song used for your ranking) then you still need to submit a ballad. Ergo, if you wait until the final round (round 7), then yes... you'd need to send 2 ballads, otherwise you're wasting your tag-team option.

Brent is moving on to the chicks. Very good, but every song in this round was at least "very good". Good voice - but not by any stretch anything I'd put top 10 when it comes to the ladies - rock, metal or symphonic. The rhythm section, while fairly straightforward, added a few nice effects. I liked the guitar harmonies and melodies plenty. Reminded me a bit of Mindmaze, and I love Mindmaze.

In the normal rounds there was a lot of risk vs reward because you could potentially lose money. In the final, it was impossible to lose money and so there was no risk involved. There was no reason at all to not go all in, and so that's exactly what we all did. :lol

I wasn't overly impressed on first listen, but it rocked way better on listen #2 (and subsequent ones) with headphones. Pretty run-of-the-mill melodic rock, but it's still a pretty good mill. Everything about it was just right - good vocals, good composition, nice melodies - but nothing that wow’d me - so it’s a middle of the pack ranking. Ranking wise, it was virtual tie with CIIC, so you unfortunately gained nothing with your tag team - other than me putting another band on ‘The List'

Angelmaker was my first Seventh Wonder song (and not in the context of a roulette), so it struck a chord with me.I think when it comes to progressive metal for me, the earlier I heard a band the better. As time goes on I just get harder to please when it comes to any style of music, but progressive rock/metal seems to be the worst. It's the stuff that's a little more out-of-the-box that makes a better first impression. Had I heard The Great Escape when it first came out in 2010 I'd probably be a fan of the album now. I might still end up becoming one - I haven't listened to it at all yet - but it'll be an uphill battle.

This one has some really wanky guitar work - I'm really not sure what to make of the guitar effect, and have no words to describe it - literally I've been searching for the right word for a few days, but can't find it. Squeeky?? … like the guitar strings are made of elastic rubber, and not conductive metal?? That's about as good a description I can come up with. Vocally very nice, but that squeeky-ness of the main melodies didn't click - really didn't click. Good production, good drum work, and 'normal' guitar sound was nice. Solo/instrumental wankfest was enjoyable, but the whole thing had me put off by that weird guitar effect. :\

It's not like I'm with-holding themes that anyone has to wait for, so no one should need to do any real "what should I send" thinking at the beginning of a round. I'd think most have at least some kind of idea, or a few songs in their "inventory" of what they're gonna play - unless they get cock-blocked by someone. Six days isn't horribly quick, or quicker than I have been running - only one less day ... and now that I've given everyone the heads up, hopefully ya'll try to somewhat map out your final three rounds.Some people are just always so slow to send.

Despite the very repetitive rhythm guitar line, it was a good enough not to bore me or have me wishing it away. I really liked the vocal fade in/out effects, which to me were very reminiscent of Epysode, and most of you know how stiff that music makes me. This had an excellent chorus - especially the step-down part 1/2 thru the chorus. Percussion - was very Portnoy-like on some of the drum creativity. Very familiar vocals - not sure why, or who it’s reminding me of.

Ok... so for those of you with your eye's on the Final Three (or Four... still TBD), here's how shit's gonna work.
Each finalist will submit a maximum of 30 minutes of music from as many or as few artists as you want. Doesn't matter to me - send 1 song, send multiple songs, multiple artists... this is listeners choice. 30 minutes is the max. No leeway... I don't actually want 30 minutes, so you go 1 second over, I'm dropping one song from your submission.
Scoring:
I can't exactly stack rank, as it will be unlikely everyone submits the same number of songs. I also wanted to do something to take into account performance from the main seven rounds, but put more emphasis on the finals. So, this is going to be like going to back to school - we've all been there, so I think everyone will get the concept. Although I'm stack ranking to produce scores currently, I've also been assigning a "grade" to each song. Consider this like a test score... so everyone will have 7 test scores at the end of this, and you'll have an 'average' grade. In the finals, consider it to be your final exam. Each song will also get a test score, and a resulting average. Your final mark will be 1/3 weighted to the 7-round competition, and 2/3 weighted to the final round.
Capiche? If not, I'll clarify again once we get to the finals... giving everyone their current "grades".

Finals. After the seven rounds, the top 3 or 4 (depending on how close scores are) will send me no more than 30 minutes of music each, from as few or as many bands as they want. Don't ask for any buffer. I don't actually want 30 minutes, so that is your absolute max. One second over, and I'm not listening to one of the songs.
I'm looking forward to the revealing of those scores, they will be a much better indication of how much you did or did not like my songs than the rankings give.

Another gorgeous female vocal performance - you love you ladies more than Zook methinks. I didn’t get the folk-sy vibe you were preparing me for, but liked it long time anyway… the slow acoustic start allowed her voice to seep right in, instrumental mid-way was nice, but it was the outro that blew me away - highlight of the song.

Here's the reason for my deadline of tomorrow night - if the song isn't on Spotify, I need my personal laptop in order to sync it to my iPhone. Since my flight leaves at 8am Sunday morning, and I'm not taking my personal laptop with me on my trip, if your song ain't on Spotify, I won't be able to spin it until I get home on Thursday.

Interesting question and something I considered in preparing an EP for jingle.boy in case I make his final. The way I read his rules it didn't seem like the flow of the EP would affect the rating , but all the same I have placed one short interlude track on it for that reason - the transition from one track to the next was too jarring IMO.

If you look at the ratings above (and round up + convert to score out of ten ) almost everyone had a majority of their submissions >75% which would equate to an 8/10 in my roulette. So everyone is handing out 8's like candy :P

I wasn't implying anything wrong with the rankings...............just that people seem to think I am hard to please and Chad's were a bit tougher. I also think sometimes people seem to see a 8/10 as much better than say a 78/100.

And so it ends. It was fun while it lasted, even with those couple of rounds I gave the worst song. I do believe that I'll go into retirement now. As you've said many times, roulette's are about having fun, and not being able to post in the thread, and participate along with the others was a bit of a drag - it just wasn't the same trying to send messages through you over email. Sure, it was fun to share some of my favorite music - although it was tough since you already know so much!
So I will remain a mystery, an enigma, an elusive presence hiding in plain sight. I didn't reveal myself in morawintersoul's roulette, or Dr. DTVT's, so I'll not reveal myself here either. YBS took part in Milena's roulette alongside Mystery though. I have a feeling they wouldn't join a roulette twice since it means some other person loses out. I think it'd be a bit of a dick move to do that. But obviously I can't rule out the possibility that Mystery is a dick, because they very well could be.

Three listens in so far. Good stuff - couple of plodders (as Brent would say). I think this is gonna be a close one. Might have results up on Friday, if not then Sunday (as I've got shit to do on Saturday).
Just a heads up... if you thought I was handing out tough ratings before, it's gonna be even a tad tougher for the finals. You've all had 2 qualification + 7 main rounds of competition to zone in on my tastes. Just like in school, that gave you plenty of time to 'study', and thus my expectations of a good performance are a little higher than they were earlier. You're the best of the best, so I came into this round expecting you to demonstrate it. Something that got a low 80s in the main competition is likely going to get a mid/high 70s.
I don't care if I get 60's , as long as everyone else gets 50's :biggrin:

Ballad was a mistake. The Canadanian (as my son called him the other day!) says he likes ballads but his roulette scores would disagree... :biggrin:

Well, this was a helluva last minute change. Not really much to say here that I haven’t said about a bunch of the 80%+ songs throughout this roulette - killer riffs, killer vocals, drums and bass that do more than just keep the beat, keyboards that add a little atmosphere here and there. Everything was right in my wheelhouse, but what really stuck out was the chorus. Song of the round. Good thing I knew The Four Horsemen already, cuz this song slayed it. Seneca’s really gonna kick himself now, as this was a band he ‘checked’ but didn’t use.

Definitely cheating on with my man-love of Kuntz's vocals at the moment. Double cheat points for sending Italian Power Metal that’s also a little groggy. Gonna check this out, with a couple of other nice guest vocalists - Luppi (Secret Sphere/Vision Divine), Lione (Rhapsody/Vision Divine/Angra), Basile (DGM/Mind Key), and Tiranti (Labyrinth).

I’m not rating this as two tracks… the intro track just sets the mood/vibe, and my ears were prepared, but my God!!!! The lyrics were cringe-worthy… if not for that, it would've been the clear favourite of the entire finals - musically it was everything I love, and a bag of chips. But man, those lyrics. Any song that uses “mistress” and “temptress” in the very first verse is sending a warning “Beware! Cheese ahead".
