I saw that American robot in a video, and it appeared to be little more than a glorified prop. Japan will show up with Mecha-Godzilla and kick their ass. You can't out-robot Japan.

Also, I have little hope for our chances unless the US military takes control of it. I got a c-note on the Japanese as well.

I could have sworn there was a thread for this, but I can't find it. You may have heard some time ago a US team randomly challenged the country of Japan to a Megabot battle. Japan wasted no time in accepting the challenge.

This is what they want to use as the base.

It's going to be a blast, and I can't wait. I predict that the American team, in true 'murica fashion, is going to build a behemoth of a machine. It will probably be a combat tank with arms. It will be slow and massive. Japan will build a super sleek ninja robot. Rather than relying on sheer mass and weapons, their advantage will be in clever programming and nimbleness.

My strategy going into this (assuming it's to win and not put on a spectacle) would be to tip my opponent over at any costs. I'd trade weapons for two powerful lifting arms. I bet being able to get a fallen robot back on its feet is not going to be high on either team's priority list. Japan will have self-stabilizing software and take any hit the Americans can dish out.

I think they're going to shatter the $500k goal. There are a lot of really rich nerds out there. I also wouldn't be surprised if they pick up a major sponsor along the way. I'm hoping that this turns into a huge event that gets friendly competition going between countries in the realm of science and technology. It'd be awesome if this could turn into an annual event with a dozen or so countries competing.

If there is any possibility of decent viewership, it likely will turn into that.  If it looks like people will watch it, you will have Go-Daddy, Subway, Coke, and a million other sponsors kicking in money to have a decal with their logo put on the robots, and then there will be no more need for private funding.

Whoever wins, I just hope the fight is awesome, more along the lines of MechaGodzilla, and less like Robot Combat League. With the building hype, I get the feeling it's going to be a letdown.

Ugh. I'm so hoping that's not the case. Fortunately for this competition, they are under human control. That will make managing this things movements a million times easier. The autonomy and software if what did the DARPA bots in. Mechanically they were pretty sound.

There was a show on not too long ago called Robot Fighting League (It sucked super hard). Is that what you were talking about? The pilots used controllers like the one below.

I'm talking about the show a couple of years ago called Robot Combat League, hosted by Chris Jericho. The robot interface was identical to that, not sure about the robots though, but it looks like they're related. The robots appeared to be designed to break down and shoot sparks and fluid upon the slightest touch for dramatic effect.

We must be talking about the same show. One guy built all twelve (or how ever many there were) robots in the competition.

Yeah, sounds like the same one. I watched the whole series, and it had a lot of potential, but it was kinda lame.

After 5 minutes of watching YT videos, my money is on Japan, based mostly on the reaction speed of Karatas's driver. Moreover, it's already a functional platform. Watching the US robot spend a few minutes just picking a car up (and not ripping it in half) didn't fill me with confidence.

Well, since this is a very early stage of robot fighting I guess it made sense not to broadcast it since it could have been a complete disaster. I hope the videos are fun and portray something close to what it really was.

That was their logic, and I get it, but I think people would have been understanding if there were delays for technical problems, and the novelty would have made up for that. The worst part for me is that they never announced a clear date or info or even that we wouldn't get to see it live as far as I'm aware, then afterwards were just like "so yeah, it's already happened and you missed it but eventually I guess you'll get a video of it". That really deflated the whole thing for me.

Doing it live could have potentially been a disaster.

1) They're trying to turn this into a legitimate sport and having a shitshow of a first live airing could have killed the idea from the get go.
2) This was trial #1. From what I've read, the fight consisted of multiple rounds with 1 round being fought per day (and not at the same time). There wasn't really a schedule and making sure the drivers remained safe and the bots worked as intended was the most important thing. Had they gone live and in the first 20 seconds a bot had a wire cut and the fight ended, everyone would be up in arms about that.

I'm waiting until they release the video before making my final judgement, but I'm thinking this was the right call.
