Title: What do you love about your job?
Post by: bout to crash on June 25, 2015, 06:46:26 PM
Let's look at the positive side of things! There's always a lot to bitch about when it comes to work, but there are plus sides to every job. Let's hear 'em.

I'm a hospice social worker, and despite the exhaustion it can bring I feel very fortunate to have found an awesome field/job and to be doing something that is not only truly making a difference on a daily basis, but positively impacts the way I live my life/spend my time. You think a lot more about how to seize the day and live life in a way that makes you happy when you are constantly reminded of the fact that it will end- maybe at 96, maybe at 35.
Also, the money is better than I expected for a social work job (plus we just got a 403b), and the independence I have is amazing. For the most part, I make my own schedule, I spend my days driving around visiting people, and there is nobody breathing down my neck. Sure, my boss may occasionally have to remind me of something I forgot to do, but for the most part she trusts me to get things done. Most of my coworkers are awesome and I feel like I'm part of an amazing team that really helps people live and die in the best way they can.
We get a quarterly "wellness" benefit which for me means a free massage  ;D (others can get facials, manicures, aromatherapy/pain creams, and more)... which leads me to the fact that the company as a whole is very flexible and understanding and encourages us to take care of ourselves when we need to. They've found ways to keep people on staff who have broken legs and can't drive, the team has come together to help out coworkers with cancer or with sick family members, that sort of thing. You have to have a big heart to be in this field, and that shows in how we're treated as employees and colleagues. Good stuff.

- my Health Insurance. Working for a large Healthcare provider has been a blessing to our family concerning how little I pay a month compared to the awesome coverage we get. I hear from close friends and relatives what they are paying and I know how lucky I am.

- The Freedom I have. I don't have anyone looking over my shoulder...if I doing my job no one is asking me any questions. I come and go as I please to meetings, job sites, the office and home. I love that flexibility.

- making big decisions. My project budgets range from $25k remodels to $15-20 Million dollar Outpatient Surgery Centers and 'I' am responsible for coordinating, budgeting and ordering all the equipment for those projects and getting them installed correctly. It can be stressful but it's a 'good' kind of stress.

- the people. I meet and work with every type of personality and it reminds me a lot of when I was Managing Restaurants. Just every type of person from the Jack leg jerk to the nicest of nice. I enjoy the interaction with them all.

Yeah, I should appreciate my health benefits as well. Being in a union house, I have pretty much complete medical, dental, and vision for a mere ten bucks a month.

I've got a lot of funny stories to tell

I've met and worked with some really cool people

I've developed a strong work ethic

most of the people i work with are now good friends of mine, AND the shitty coworker just got kicked out of my department, so i'm pretty stoked on that.

employee discounts are pretty chill too. and the flexibility w/ the hours i work is great.

I love about my job that it is varied. I don't do one thing all the time, which I would imagine gets tedious no matter how much you love it, I do different stuff - guided tours, children programs, preparation for museum events... - and even though I like some things more than others, I much prefer the variety.

I get to work with what I've always wanted - computers, and sitting at a desk all day in front of one. And I have great co-workers, that's always nice. I make enough money from it to pay the bills and even buy stuff I want, CDs, movies, computer stuff without having to worry about it (that's single life for ya!).

I bitch and I complain about my job, But I know when it comes to my "field" (lol security guard), this is the best company in the area to work with.

I've worked with my Supervisor and my Regional Supervisor for almost 3 years. We all started in the same place and worked our ways up (myself a tad slower than the others... lol.) I consider them friends as well as coworkers / my bosses for the most part. I can be blunt and tell them like it is without fear of getting in trouble (for the most part.) I also like the fact that I can still call the owners of the company anytime and have a real conversation with them, and that they (my bosses, and the owners) trust my opinions in a lot of matters.

Also, I do enjoy most of my coworkers. I've got a couple great friendships that have blossomed while being here.

Last, I like the fact that I get to help people with some of the most off the wall problems. You know how cops always have the most out of left field stories? Well.. I do to. Not that I am comparing myself to an Police Officer, but when you work in a community of almost 500 residences, you experience a lot of crazy shit.

The fact that I turned in my resignation last week, and get to take batting practice on a former manager without fear of retaliation. j/k ;)

My job allowed me to easily move states, learn how to diagnose using the DSM IV-TR, and advance my professional license for free. The co-workers were also always awesome, and I will miss the shared grunt level trench pains we had carrying a large community non-profit on our backs.

Not sure what the new position will bring. The fact that I call it a position vs. a job is how positive my outlook is for it. The fact that my boss seems awesome, is back in corrections where I have been chasing to get back to for several years, set 9-5 type hours, has a partial pension, and gives me from what I understand a huge budget for Continuing Education in my field are solid things from the start. Oh, and apparently an office.

For as much as I really hate my retail pharmacy job (which I only do for a scholarship), at the same time I LOOOOOVE my hospital pharmacy job.  :heart

Pretty much every negative for working at a Rite aid or CVS is reversed in the Hospital

When people think of a pharmacist, 90% of them will only think of Rite aid and CVS, but hidden away in the hospital are pharmacists as well and its so different.

What most people don't really even realize is that every single order written by a doctor in the hospital must first be reviewed and verified by a hospital pharmacist before the nurse can give the med. So if you go to the Emergency room and say you have a headache while you are there, the nurse can't even give an Advil or tylanol until the pharmacist reviews the order.

What I love about Hospital pharmacy:

1. Fixing one problem at a time. Sadly I'm just not a great multi-tasker. At Rite Aid, you are handling a drop off, while having a phone on your shoulder, while checking another prescription, while ringing someone up on the register, while giving a flu shot, while pulling a new script off the Fax. Screw that. A lot of people make mistakes, potentially deadly ones since their attention is divided. With hospital pharmacy, I can review one order at a time. There's 3 other pharmacists there so everything is balanced out so that I can focus on what I'm doing and I have other people to bounce Ideas off of or ask questions.

2. Every problem can be fixed, either right away or with-in an hour max. Need to talk to a doctor? well, they are in the same building as you, so you just call them and resolve what ever issue, right there on the spot. Your computer dies, you call IT and the in-house IT person comes down in like 15 mins. Out of a med? just call one of the neighbor hospitals and borrow it. A courier usually arrives in about 20 mins. Hospitals are huge machines with a lot or resources. The resources you need to do your damn job.

3. I get to take a lunch Believe it or not, pharmacists at CVS and rite aid work 12 hours a day and don't get a lunch. Fucked up? Yeah, but that's the way it is. They will nibble at stuff through out the day, but that's usually interrupted constantly. Hospital, I get a lunch every single day, without question.

4. Random food- once a week there's typically a catered inservice lunch in kind of deal where Drug reps come to discuss a new drug being developed. Bitchin good food and learning about new meds. Win-Win

5. Good tunes- We get to listen to music all day long. Huge plus and good motivator.

6. I get to use what I went to school for- Pharmacist's go to school for 6 years and get a PharmD (Doctorate of pharmacy). Every retail pharmacist that I've met spends 90% of their day billing insurance ( :censored) which is awful and then getting yelled at over 2 dollar co-pays. If they are lucky, they might get 2 seconds to tell somebody to take an anti-biotic with food, as the person is staring at their watch, ready to haul ass out of there and get on to the next errand they have to do. You have the knowledge of a medical doctor for the most part but never get to use it. In hospital, I have a full picture of a person's medical profile. Age, weight, height, liver function tests, lab values, kidney function, ect. I have to necessary information to actually safely decide if a patient should receive a drug or not or if the dose is correct. On top of that, when a person is laid up in a hospital bed because they weren't taking their meds right, they are much more willing to listen to your counseling. And you can actually take the time, one on one, with privacy to make sure they understand their meds and how to take them.

5. Dysfunctional yet loving family- There's like 20 people that work in a hospital pharmacy, as opposed to 1 pharmacist and 1 tech at a lot of retail pharmacies. These 20 people I pretty much consider family. Its a huge group of people working together to hold this crazy hospital together. We bust ass, get the work done and then just chill and have a good time.

Hospital pharmacy is a job I look forward to going to everyday, and presents reasonable challenges to keep my mind challenged and makes me feel fulfilled each day, without overwhelming me. I am happy as a clam working this job that I love  :heart

TLDR- screw Rite-aid and CVS. Hospital pharmacy for life  :metal

I eat very, very well.  :RJ:

I came here to state what I love about mine, but I got derailed with this comment. I envy you. I've been learning how to cook well over the last several years and I was considering a brief stint in culinary school just so that I could learn more for myself and to cook for people I know. Books, youtube, articles and friends have been my go-to for learning. Right now, I'm tackling spicy pulled BBQ chicken, pulled pork, and picked shrimp.

Anyway, I love my job because it allows me to travel the world.

This sounds like a dream situation for any job.  Problems at my job require days or weeks to resolve, requiring contact with lots of people both in our building, and elsewhere and they are never available when the problem arises.  This requires constant follow up calls and emails, and hunting for data in an office with terrible documentation habits.  This is all happening in between your "real work" and is thus not allocated any time.

BTW, I typed this response on my phone, and it took freaking forever.  How do some of you folks use your phones for shit like this ?

I work in a cafe so I get fed but it's not fresh fruit and salad :P

It's chips ( frites ) and sausages and chili and so on but I don't have to pay so swings & roundabouts. :)

I walk up to 6 miles a day just walking around the cafe and to and from work so...

I'm simply not a morning person, so I like it.  Don't have to shift my day around for doctors appointments or emergency errands.  The only drawback is that I don't get to attend industry screenings as much anymore.

Yeah, that's true. It could be stressful/busy but at least it flies by. Dragging days just SUCK. That was one thing I didn't like about retail. The busy times were great, but then on slow days you'd just stand there drooling at the cash register or doing the same "cleaning" over and over again.

I don't know that I ever get a chance to love anything about being an electrician in general.    In theory, everything I truly enjoy about being an electrician is not allowed because of time constraints.  (Being a bit OCD about my finished product, taking the time to make sure something is going to look perfect even when no one is going to see it, taking the time to think things through before bulldozing ahead and finding out I have to adjust my plans....you just can't do any of that stuff in construction and remain competitive)

But what I love about my *current* job is that it is 15 minutes from my house, and I'm working inside a relatively cool and shady concrete building when it's in the mid to upper 90's outside.

Among other things, the fact that I can take lunch pretty much whenever I want.

I was on the 6:30-3:30 shift for the last six months, and I would always go to lunch around 12 or so, so I'd get back around 1 or so, and my afternoon was a breeze; 2 1/2 hours at the most!

Now I am back on the 8-5 shift (yay for a promotion), and I am trying my best to go to lunch not until close to 1, that way I get back later and still have a shorter afternoon.  I had to go to lunch at the same time as my trainer for several days, and she always goes at 11 (she is on the 6:30-3:30 schedule), and my afternoons were sooooo long.

A long morning shift, lunch, and then a short afternoon shift is the way to go. :tup :tup

Ol Ol Ol Ol

technically I don't really get one either - but if it goes quiet and we have ten minutes - we are allowed to grab some food and sit down.

But 5 hours is a short shift and it goes really quickly. I mostly don't take a break - or I eat something as I go.

:)

We don't get luck breaks. We eat when we can during the shift. If it's slow... the entire shift is a break. If it's busy... well... you aren't eating.

I wouldn't know what to do with a break.

I've been there before in that situation, so I know what you mean.

I am fortunate now in that not only do I get a 1-hour lunch whenever I want to take it (so long as we aren't all gone at the same time, which never happens), but I am about 6 miles/12 minutes from home, so on days I don't do lunch with co-worker friends, I can drive home, eat lunch, still have time to kick back and relax for 15, and then drive back to work.  If nothing else, it gets me out of the office for an hour.

Same here...and it is nice. I can meet up with friends, run errands....do whatever. Also, being a procurer of equipment there are a LOT of vendors that want me to buy things from them. So, on any given week in our office there are two, three...sometimes even four "Lunch and Learns" where these vendors will cater a lunch to get us all in the same room and listen to them pitch their product. So I often have the option of not spending any $$ on lunch if I can sit and listen for an hour.

I'm a programmer, so Benefit Number One is that my job requires me to sit at a computer.  I can sit and play around on the Internet all day if I so choose.  I have done so in the past.  As I type this, right now, I'm on a 1.5-hour web meeting which is required training.  That's happening on my other screen, and the presenter is blabbing away on my cell phone, since I'm sitting in my basement, in my pajamas, officially on the clock.  What a country!

Okay, that's kinda flippant, but it's pretty much the truth.  I'm salaried obviously, so basically if my work is getting done, they don't give a shit how many hours I put in on any given day.  Driven by a weird combination of laziness and a ruthless sense of efficiency, I've automated almost every process I'm responsible for.  Right now, in addition to getting credit for "being at work" and participating in the required training, one of my PCs at work is cranking away on my regular Wednesday processing.  I got up at 7:00, downloaded some data, and started the process.  Some time this afternoon, the jobs will be done, and I will have generated over 10 gigabytes of data, with a few clicks of the mouse over about ten minutes time.  Again, they don't care how much time it actually takes me, what matters is they look and see the shitloads of data that Bob produces, and isn't he fucking amazing?

Sure, there are days when I'm coding for ten or twelve hours straight.  But when that happens, it's usually because someone built a timeline that's basically impossible to meet, so the higher-ups actually pay some attention, and then when I come through, I'm a fucking hero.  Also, I've been doing this for over 20 years.  Even as I'm pulling code directly out of my ass and typing it in, it's structured, organized, and efficient.  Tomorrow there might be questions, or they might ask me to re-run certain pieces of it because that was test data before and now we have the production data.  Sure, a couple of mouse-clicks, I go get some lunch, and later I say "Here's that production data you wanted."  And it's all perfect and again I'm a hero.

What I love about my job is that I'm good at it, and everyone else seems think so, too.  I'm lazy as hell, but I've got them all fooled.

My job has great benefits:

Ridiculously good and cheap health insurance including dental and vision
Matching 401k
They stock us up with a macbook pro, samsung s5, bose noise cancelling headphones and a mifi
Free life insurance equivalent to 1 year of pay
Stock options (too many granted that I can't even afford them)
I am allowed to expense my tolls for my commute (over $200 a month for me)
I keep all my credit card rewards for my company expenses (over 25k a year I spend for work)
and a $60 monthly budget Im allowed to spend on snacks for myself at work (half of which usually ends up in my house).

Just started in my position, so some of these are surface as I'm doing stock training;

-Pension plus 401k
-Pretty good health insurance, free vision and dental in one year
-Gift cards for wellness milestones
-Relatively insane amount of combined time off
-8 to 4, done, 40 hours a week. I love straight 8 shifts. May have the ability to do four 10s eventually.
-An office. A long term career goal that I hit sooner than I expected
-A fantastic boss who will turn into a mentor, as he has a doctorate in the subject area, so I can pick a bit of his brain when I go for a PhD
-Work group seems mostly very friendly, the ones that I have met
-Job security. Will be hard for my job to be retracted if cuts ever came, which is also unlikely due to the field and expanding population
-HUGE training funding if used at the right time, which is rare I feel in my field. It will allow me to attend a training conference that I thought would always be too pricey
-And a significant pay raise vs. my last job

Currently I am in New Zealand travelling for the past 6 months, but before that I worked as a labourer/installer of housing exteriors (siding, soffit, fascia, that kinda stuff). The boss was my brothers friend, and he's a pot head with hardly any work ethic, same goes for his brother, and all of his staff besides myself are either potheads, borderline alcoholics, or both, so when I began I worked my ass off, and by the time I left for vacation (just over 2 years) I had basically become the foreman of the crew and had been for about a year, and was making nearly double what I did when I started.

The thing I loved about it are his flexibility (if I wanted to take an afternooon off to golf I could, and would always more than make up for it), the feeling of seeing a finished product, the ability to work on my own with headphones and zone out, working outdoors in the summer, and getting along with my boss since we are very tight now.

Last week he emailed me and asked if I would come back to work with him because the crew has turned to shit since I left, but I am moving about an hour and a half away. He offered me a significant raise, and said I could work 4 days a week so I could spend weekends at my place, and if I was interested he would let me stay at his place with his family during the week for free or else he woiuld pay my gas to drive back and forth every day. It's a tough offer to pass up, and not often does one get a raise for not working for 6 months  :lol.

So yesterday my company had our annual Field Day.  Essentially everyone who comes (the NYC and Philly offices, and then the few remote workers like myself who live in the area) is divided into four teams and you compete in various events to determines who wins.  Games such as volleyball, dodgeball, pie eating, tug-o-war... plus tons of amazing food and an open bar (with liqueur too!).  You are allowed to bring your family as well.  The NYC office took a chartered boat from Manhatten to Liberty State Park in Jersey City, the Philly office got bussed in.  I drove  anyway, it was beautiful yesterday... and I got paid too!  Definitely a cool perk.

Here are some pics:

• I only work 5 hours a day

• Shifts go by stupidly fast

• I get fed on my shift for free

• I get free coffee all day

• I work Fri - Mon. Start early and finish early afternoon - meaning that from 2:30pm on Monday to 10am Friday Morning i'm off work :)

I get a paycheck every two weeks.  That's it.

I get paid every week. It's nice to have a top up every 7 days.

I feel like waiting 4 weeks for your next payment is too long.

I'm currently doing way more hours because of the summer and it should definitely help with the rent - but man I can't wait to go back to having 3 days off in a row. :)

I wouldnt like getting paid monthly.  Makes managing your money during the month a bit more difficult I would think, but never had a job like that.

I like my bi-weeky payments.  First paycheck of the month goes to my credit cards and my savings account.  Second paycheck goes to my mortgage and housing expenses as well as credit cards, I usually don't have money to put into savings from this check.  And then there are a couple months a year where you get a third paycheck in that month. That goes to my credit cards and savings or maybe something specific if I was looking to purchase something.

I do the exact same thing. First check is always car payment, oil, electric, and cable. The second check is always mortgage and credit cards. The second check is more or less spent the second I get it, I usually only have $150 or so left from it.

I get paid on the 8th and the 23rd. It took a while to go from gwtting paid every Friday, to every other Wednesday,  to set dates every month.

My buddy,  who just started with my company,  is already going on about how much of a pain it's going to be.

On a positive note... I got paid early.  And Apparently I am accruing sick time now.

I get paid on the 8th and the 23rd.

That's different.  But I had a job where I got paid on the 1st and 15th every month, so I guess this is the same thing, just a week later.  For the most part, I found it easier to budget, since most of my expenses are monthly.  Rent, utilities, car payments, etc.  But things like groceries tend to be bi-weekly.

I like getting paid every two weeks better because, as others have pointed out, a couple times a year there's an "extra" payday that month.  Once the groceries and gas are paid for, the rest is basically extra money.  I think of it as my reward for being so good at budgeting.

Yup, that paycheck feels like a bonus because you don't account for it in your monthly budget besides the cost of living each day (food, gas, and whatnot)

The pay periods are the 1st to the 15th (Paid on the 23rd), and the 16th - end of month (Paid on the 8th). Used to get paid on the 6th and 21st... but they bumped it back due to the sheer amount of time it takes to do payroll sometimes
