No videos as of yet?
If you find some, post them here.
-
doesn't the tour begin tomorrow?
-
Oh crap, you are right. Somehow I had the 21st in my head.
Well, hopefully some videos will pop up nonetheless.
-
I'm sure they will the very next day (or even in the same day)! I cannot wait too!
-
Yea, tomorrow they will be playing at Metropolis Fest in Poland, a 1:30 hour set.

If DT were Metallica ( which thank fuck they aren't ) - they'd play a show that's CALLED Matropolis and not play Metropolis.

This might almost be enough for Metropolis Pt.1 + SFAM for Metropolis Fest :metal

Are you referring to when Metallica played in Antarctica and didn't play Trapped Under Ice? Because that pissed me off.
-
No, actually, I think he was referring to the time they played Australia and did not play Creeping Death. Because there is death in Australia.

Don't talk about Blob's untanned pasty white body like that. He needs sun.

They also played *their own festival* called Orion and didn't play Orion on any of the two nights they played.
They also had a concert movie called Through The Never and didn't play Through The Never.

They also played a concert in Philadelphia and didn't play Don't Tread On Me.

They also played in Delaware and didn't even............:| hi.....we're in Delaware.....
-
Dammit, I thought maybe I was wrong and today was the first show. Oh well. I was hoping that maybe they would suddenly reveal the new album and single before starting the tour but oh well, I'm excited nonetheless to see what they will be playing.
-
What about the time they played in a garbage dump and didn't play St. Anger?

That setlist.fm link may not be correct. All we know is that clips from those two songs have been posted. We do not know the order in which they were played.

It may not be correct, but holy fuck, WHAT A GLORIOUS SETLIST!!! I really hope it's real

Could have gone without CM and Wither, but the rest is pretty cool.

Cool setlist. I'm sad that I'm not going to see a show this tour.

-
Easily the best setlist they've had since MM joined, despite ACOS and BTV. Nice to see As I Am, PA, and CM played, given how sadly overlooked that huge chunk of their discography was last tour.

If that's the encore then I may have to leave early... aside from that and *spoilers* The spirit Caries On its a great set!
-
Aside from Afterlife and Burning My Soul, there is little to complain about. From both of those albums, I would rather have just about any other song chosen to represent them. Otherwise, the setlist is solid. I particularly like the DT12 choice, hopefully they play it on the DT13 tour.
-
So this tour is basically the Queensryche/Dream Theater tour twelve years later!
-
The setlist is good, not great. I would prefer if they play the entire ACOS.
I don't understand why the choose Behind the Veil as a last song! The Bigger Picture would be a far better ending for a concert.
My favourites of this setlist: ACOS and About to Crash
But seriously... Caught in a web... Again???
-
Keep in mind the length of the slightly shorter set when trying to fit a song from every album, the different audience, and also the fact they're still in the middle of recording an album and probably want to help minimize how many new songs they have to learn. All things considered, I love the setlist. No setlist is going to make everyone happy.
-
Tommorow is my 1st show in 15', hope they changed some songs
-
Oh I am really liking that setlist :):) Only one song from their (I.M.O) worst ever album (DT12) and that one is also by far most favourite on that album too :) and some cracking songs from throughout the history of the band.
Hope its the same or very very similar at the "Ramblin Man Fair" gig next month :)
-
All things considered, I like that setlist! Definitely some songs I wouldn't personally choose, but there are enough great songs to make up for that.
-
So this tour is basically the Queensryche/Dream Theater tour twelve years later!
Because it has Metropolis Part 1 and sometimes Spirit Carries On? :lol
-
I've been a huge defender of Mangini era DT in every aspect but man, this setlist kinda sucks.
Of course, a sucky DT setlist is still worth going to see and I love that they brought back Burning My Soul and I've never got to see them perform About to Crash so that would be cool but everything else is kinda bland.
Still I love Constant Motion and As I Am although I feel like I've seen them perform those a lot. I wouldn't mind them playing COIW every show so thats cool.
-
as posted in the other thread... WOW this is awesome!! :metal :metal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipWqb8a02jw
-
Nice setlist besides BMS.
-
That is an interesting setlist. If I'm not mistaken, 5 of the songs were played live since Mangini joined the band and 8 weren't... very interesting indeed...
-
Seems like Mangini scaled down his kit. I'm seeing two bass drums instead of four.
-
I did not notice, but it would make sense to bring less gear on a festival circuit. It is expensive to haul gear around Europe for the summer. That's why so many bands at festival gigs rent amps, lighting rigs, and other equipment--it is cheaper than hauling their own. Mangini's kit is so customized that there is no way he can do that. He has to bring his own.

Yeah, I personally dig it this way. The whole stage looks a bit less cluttered. I miss the Systematic Chaos ants on stage though :lol

I seem to remember reading somewhere that Mike said he would be getting rid of at least one of them which was used for sound triggers. I think someone wrote that on this forum when they spoke with him last.
But yes, seems very scaled down. Kind of odd looking to see it so small.
-
Set list is very cool... I haven't seen any of these songs live yet.
But I would have liked some other song from the Metropolis album. I still don't get why Spirit is such a big hit, never liked it for some reason. But I'm probably in the minority with this opinion :blush
And I really hope they will play the whole A Change Of Seasons at the 2 hour gigs... then I could die happy :hefdaddy

Afterlife! They could not have picked a better WDADU song to open with imo

Setlist from todays Dream Theater performance at "Metal Hammer Festival": https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/dream-theater/2015/spodek-katowice-poland-33c95cc5.html
Obviously pretty much the same, only difference with the last being Innocence instead of Crimson Sunrise

Very surprising to me.. I hope they continue to doing that.. :metal I'd love that idea..
-
Before any video pops up... Any predictions for JLB's live phrasing and pitch differences for Behind The Veil on this tour?
I'm going to predict:
1. "Please" becomes "Plaze",
2. "Away" and "Day" are held out way longer than on the studio version with reeeaally thick vibrato (a la "What would you say, if I walked away" live)
3. in "finest hour", "hour" becomes exaggeratedly short and "owaah"
4. at least one "someone save me" becomes the same note (G) on both "someone" and "save me" rather than switching to F#
edit: also: 5. "why can't face another day"

I don't like Spirit that much either and I'd prefer Through Her Eyes in that spot, but TSCO is a fan-favorite and a more suitable song for festivals. Constant Motion is also one of my least favorites and I'm pretty indifferent towards Panic Attack, but I'm going to the show with the mentality that those songs will probably come across better live, and I'm just happy there are no repeats from last tour.

I seriously hope DT won't try to cover something from every single album for the upcoming world tour like they did with the Octavarium tour.
Simply because we got now more albums.
Certainly they will be releasing some sort of Score+10 for 2016, however, rather than covering a song from each album, I think the shows should be more flexible and better structured, which is what MP did very well. What sounds good? What fits? What kind of show do we want to give?
When groups add themselves limitations like this (they are forced to pick one song from each album), it also affects their creativity and the flow of the show, especially at this point of the band's career where they got so much material that they got to play shorter and not so-satisfying songs (Wither? I mean, like, why? Having ARoP)
Now, if this is the case for the festivals, I can only assume that the first act from each show of the world tour (which I hope is in the Evening format) will cover relevant songs from DT's history, and that's okay. I would rather have a full metal show with heavy songs and then flowing into quiet, calmer songs, than having one heavy song and then of sudden a calm one and then yet another heavy one and so on. You can leave Awake in peace for the time-being, I seriously don't want to hear anything from Awake after the last tour, yet I really wanna hear some Anna Lee that flows into Through Her Eyes, there you would have a calm section for a show.
I don't know, but these are my thoughts huh

They should play one song from each album but maybe not in chronological order. That would give them a little more flexibility in making the setlist while also allowing them to represent their entire career.

Really good videos coming out so far. Mangini is a standout on the Metropolis vid from Minsk and Labrie sounds really good on Caught in a Web from Poland and most the others. I know we pretty much say this every time around, but Labrie just keeps getting better and better with an expanding range. I'm not sure how this is happening but it's great

Totally agree with you, it limits the band's creativity a lot set-wise, and I think it's fine for now while they're still working on the new album and can't really Take the Time (haha) to learn a lot of new stuff for their live performances, but for instance, I'd like to see a better concert closer than Behind the Veil during their world tour, something like Finally Free is way more epic as a closer, and they would still be able to put BTV in the set, just not at the end.
-

I thought James sounded out of tune in the first half of that CIAW video, but he'll probably improve as the tour goes on.
-
Honestly, I think what the best thing for them to do for an anniversary tour at this stage in the game is to go on tour without a new album, and only honor past material. With DT13, there's gonna be likely 65-80 min of new material to pick from, and since it's the album they'll be promoting, it's safe to assume about 45-50 min of that will be played. In a 3 hour set w/ intermission, that leaves about 105 min of set time left for the past albums, which is 1 hour and 45 min. If they choose ACoS as the encore, then it's about 1 hour 20 min left for 12 other albums. It's definitely doable, but I think to showcase their entire career, the proper way is to just play their material up till now and do more than just 1 song from every album, and not only pick songs that are shorter due to time restraints. They wouldn't be able to play songs like LitS, Home, The Glass Prison, etc without seriously butchering other album choices.

Finally Free as a closer?
I don't think so
for me that song is a nice way to end a "special show" like a DVD or to end a show where SFAM is played in its entirety or something in that terms.
but for any other kind of show its feels kinda weird, it doesn't flow well IMO.
A similar feeling came to me when i saw that they are playing About to Crash. Is a good song and a cool thing to do to play it again after so long, but i can't see that song flowing in a setlist without WIMH after it (or any song right after it). I mean the begining is great but at the end of the song it begins reflect the fact that is a part of a bigger song (SDOIT) more than a stand alone one. And that to me, is something that doesn't help the momentum of the show.
I'd rather see from SDOIT (album) a "more stand alone song" like Misunderstood, BF, or even AtC Reprise maybe.
Actually it would be cool if they could play that both songs together, AtC and AtC (reprise).
Yes, this kind of setlist may affect the band's creativity in setlists term but i think they still can find a way to make it feel like fresh and new again, without change this thing where they play one song of each album.
Actually they could put all the AA saga in there as a way to visit each album from SDOIT to Silver Linings.
Who knows, maybe they'll go with that in a further part of the tour.
-
Setlist Spoilers ahead, obviously.
I feel like a set like this, using the current songs they've played on this tour, would work (just a different order for better flow):
False Awakening Suite (intro tape)
As I Am
Panic Attack
Wither
Afterlife
Caught In A Web
A Change of Seasons II: Innocence
Burning My Soul
Constant Motion
About To Crash
The Spirit Carries On
Bridges In The Sky (abridged)
Behind The Veil

REALLY!!!!
I wish someone would tell me why the HELL the SONG Through the Never isn't in the MOVIE "Through the Never!!"
-
There's no way to make this perfect for everybody, but if the current show is only about eighty minutes, then I think the best thing to do is include all three of the NEW songs that weren't played on the last tour, and also commemorate the anniversaries of A.C.o.S. and 8VM. Maybe something like this:
1) Surrender to Reason
2) These Walls
3) The Bigger Picture
4) Sacrificed Sons
5) A Change of Seasons
6) Behind the Veil
7) Metropolis
8) "Encore-" The Root of All Evil

The vid I saw of 'Afterlife' was pretty good. Mangini's version of drumming that song is AWESOME!! A lot more footwork and his hands are all over the place. It's not fair to say it's 'better' than MP's recorded version being that he wrote/recorded that when he was what....18..19? But, I do think Mangini's version I heard was much more enjoyable to listen to than MP's 'SCORE' version...

Ok, stupid question: At the very end of the video, there's a drawn-out guiutar feedback sound. But, JP hands off his guiutar at that moment. Who makes the sound?
-
It's on the backing track. They did it at Budokan too, so the chord can ring out while they switch guitars.

I couldn't agree more. MM drumming really improved the song and brought it to a new level IMO. I always watch the same songs in different gigs, just to see what MM brings with his interpretations/versions of the songs. And the way he's been doing this, is really improving DT's sound.
Also, I like the current drum sounds better than the one from the previous tour.

So, a question rised up in my mind: As I know, the setlist e.g. for Wacken will be 75 minutes (https://www.wacken.com/de/bands/running-order/) consequently leading to the setlist being a bit to long. In addition, there is this Bonn festival (with Devin Townsend + Haken as supports and those three being the only bands to play that day) and I think that DT could get a longer gig there.
I just want to say that the setlist HAS to be changed (at least for Wacken), so what are suggestions for alterations being made?
-

Suggestions by who? I am not sure what you mean.
But as far as changing it, yes, they will have to in locations where they have shorter set times. They may change a song or two here and there. But I expect they will just eliminate songs to make the set fit the time slot.
-
Sorry, perhaps I said it in the wrong way. I wanted to ask generally which alterations you think will be made. But you already answered my question somehow, so...
-
Oh, okay. And if you want to know more specifically which songs people think they will change or cut, I will leave it to others to guess. I have no clue.

Allegedly in Pistoia they will be getting sone extra time ( to be confirmed).
Would they then play ACOS in thei entirety? And/or given that Pistoia is in Tuscany... A special encore for the occasion? ;)
-
I still find it hard to believe that we might get some extra time. I think it's best for us to just assume we'll get a regulae set, instead of pumping up our hopes and then face a disappointment. :-X

In Prague guys sat only in the hotel and arena, even JR, didn't walked through the city.I waited for autographs but this time not lived to see.In Katowice 15 fans catch all members, but unfortunately I was waiting for the bus at this time.Which was delayed 4 hours  :)
-
But, honestly, they cannot play this setlist at Wacken, because the setlist is too long, except they play shorter versions of some songs. So at least something must be different at that concert.
-
So at least something must be different at that concert.
+1, but maybe he forgot that at some concerts have a different amount of time .We'll see :hat
-
DT plays to prerecorded click tracks, they can't just easily trim a song to make it shorter. Very likes they will just skip songs.
-
They should totally just exchange songs with other short as shit songs from the albums.
Goodbye Metropolis. Hello Wait For Sleep.
Goodbye As I Am. Hello Vacant.
Goodbye Shaman's Trance. Hello Far From Heaven
Goodbye Burning My Soul. Hello You Not Me.
Goodbye Caught In A Web. Hello Silent Man
Goodbye Spirit. Hello Through My Words.
Goodbye About To Crash. Hello War Inside My Head.
Goodbye Panic Attack. Hello I Walk Beside You.
Goodbye Constant Motion. Hello Forsaken.
Goodbye Behind The Veil. Hello Along For The Ride.
Wither is the shortest song on Black Clouds... Afterlife can stay... and Don't fuck with ACoS

Have you been drinking?

Have you been drinking cough syrup?
-
Nope.
Ok I am now
But I wasn't when I posted that
-
Count me among those who don't think it's necessary to organize the setlist chronologically. They already did that for the 20th anniversary shows.
-
Middle Fingers to those that don't understand...BTV is the best Encore.
-
The Bigger Picture is the best choice IMO
But... ya know... saving for the next full tour probably
-
The problem is, neither the first or most recent album has a song classic enough to be the last song played at a concert yet. I get the logic of doing the chronological thing, but while it is cool that Behind the Veil is getting played, I am not sure how much a set list works like that in reality. You don't want your last song at a concert being one where a lot of fans are wondering, "What song is this?"

I think they should play the albums in chronological order and the encore should be ACoS.

Breaking All Illusions would qualify, to me.

BAI is not on the first or most recent.

My copy of IAW has BAI on it. It flows right into it from PMU.

The Killing Hand (extended version) and Illumination Theory would be great as closers..

They've been using IT as closer and it's the most anti-climatic thing, just like Count of Tuscany. IMO.

Anyone that's gone to one of the shows.... Is there a 30th Anniversary Poster or T-shirt? What other kind of merch do they have set up for the festivals?

I can't really see how those songs are anti-climatic at all - they all have these glorious, epic endings.
-
Exactly.

No, it's not.

As for the longer songs for certain concerts,
This won't happen, although if love it as I'll be at the Bonn gig (best prog gig ever) but they have set click tracks and light shows for all gigs, they will not change this for a few venues.

Still, the show tomorrow is gonna be really awesome and I`m glad to be there too! In addition, I think that the setlist`s pretty good, since this will be my first DT show and two of my favourites will definitely be played (Metropolis + Panic Attack) :D

Cool, have fun at the show!
I like the setlist, too. It will be my third DT show (in 3 weeks) and they don't repeat any song from the last tour, so I have seen none of these songs live yet.
I'm curious to see how this chronological set will flow. :)
-
JLB is sick right now apparently. My brother went to see them in Bonn, was apparently a rather rough performance.

Damn, that sucks. I remember watching a recent show where he was pretty on point except he couldn't reach his highest notes (ie. Caught in a Web verse 2 and 3). Maybe that's why.
-
In a totally unexpected turn of events, I'm gonna see them coming Sunday at a festival called Bospop in Holland. Steven Wilson, Anathema, Black Label Society and Europe too. Pretty cool line up!
-
If I were going, I would hope Wilson was on first so I could just arrive late and avoid his set altogether. But cool lineup otherwise.
-
Ending the show with Behind the Veil is pretty weird. The whole setlist seems off, in my opinion. "A Fortune In Lies" would work a lot better than "Afterlife" as an opener.
-

People keep saying that, but I'm not sure what most mean. Some have clarified that they think it is odd because it is a newer and not well-known song. I think I agree with that. But many have implied that it just seems odd as a closer musically. I don't agree with that. I think it is actually a pretty good closer from that standpoint.

I have not even the faintest idea what you look like, but see you there I suppose.
Also, I wonder what songs they will scrap from the setlist, since they only have an hour to play.

Somebody has to counter the Steven Wilson cirlcejerk around here.

Behind the Veil would make a killer opener, especially at a festival.

Not sure I understand. The guy is going on after DT and is the last performer. So wouldn't you just leave after DT's set and avoid the rush home? :P

Well, since the person who posted the lineup did not state the order, I have no idea who is first, last, or in between. But thanks for the unsolicited snarky comment anyway.

I will mock you bosk1 for your lack of Steven Wilson love. Take that you silly person.

And

Yeah, that's right.

It will be good if you can leave before Steven Wilson's set, because it's dangerous to drive while half asleep.

Guess what? I'm going there and I will enjoy the hell out of Dream Theater, Anathema and Steven Wilson (in that order) and then drive home through the night afterwards not even close to being half asleep because I had an awesome day and I'm full of excitement.
Take that :|

Count me in as a massive prog fan (generally) that isn't in the Steven Wilson fan club. I liked (not loved) his work with Fish, and his Crimson remasters are out of this world, but other than that... if he's first, I'll be in the parking lot, and if he's last, I'll be beating traffic.
(That's not precisely true; I'll see anyone live once, but I'm making a point).
-
I hate interrupting this poignant Steven Wilson discussion, but the first bootleg of the tour has emerged! It's a good quality recording of the second show of the tour in Katowice, held on June 27th. I uploaded it on my onedrive folder for those who don't have an account on dimeadozen.org!

Well, as a bootleg trader and collector I would never trade/share a recording in a degraded form. The taper recorded this show in lossless format, as per the bootlegging etiquette, and as such it is to be circulated! :)
-
I can't even attempt to explain the show in Bonn.... Utterly amazed.
Behind the veil is not a good song to close on though.

This. Even if JLB was a bit weak that show, as he announced after Metropolis.

Thanks Wasteland, sounds great.

So after the Germany show, I met haken and chatted to them for the best part of 2 hours, I posted some pics in the haken thread for you fans of them to check out! :metal

Can someone explain the problem with "setlist spoilers"? I don't get it...
What's the worst that can happen ?
Dude! I just got back from the DT show and they played You Not Me ! ;D
 Oh thank YOU for telling me - now I know they play Dream Theater songs !

Some people like the surprise of not knowing what song is being played next. The anticipation and surprise can add to the fun.
Generally I personally prefer to have an idea of what songs will be played, because it might affect whether or not I attend in some cases.
-
But - unless you know for definite that they're playing the same songs every night as they did recently - you might not even get that song....
-
I meant in a general sense. If a matter of one or two songs is make or break, then it's probably not worth it. :lol For a lot of bands, there's no worry anyway.
-
Plus I think once you're in the venue and the lights go down and the band starts - you will probably forget everything anyway and just enjoy it.
Unless you're so OCD that you just stand there like " I can't enjoy this gig knowing what songs they're going to play " :\
-
:lol
Of course, but I get that some people want that extra little bit of surprise too. It's a minor thing, but I respect that some people don't want the setlist spoiled in advance.
-
Kotow, Blob is one of those guys. :lol
-
Kotow, Blob is one of those "guys". :lol
Yes! I am also a "guy". :)
-
I thought that was understood.
-
I could care less about 'spoilers', even in TV programs and movies (most of the time lol). If knowing something in advance is enough to make the experience of watching something or being there not worth it for some people then that's completely fair enough, but whether I think I know something or not, if it's a show I want to see, I'll go to it / watch it anyway.
Anyway, thank you wasteland! I'm very grateful of all the boots you've made available, you've saved me having to look through all the rather questionable audio quality vids on youtube. ;)
-

I always found that stance to be somewhat silly when it comes to bootlegs. The source material's degradation is magnitudes larger than any compression degradation.
-
^^^ While I see your point, I think the stance is more about trying get the best quality with the means available. It's either that or not bother with bootlegs at all which is probably what most audiophiles would do.
In any case, I just put this show on my phone so I can listen at work with headphones and after some slight adjustments to the EQ I think it sounds really good.. For a bootleg... Haha. ;)

That is all fine. But those people should have the common sense to stay out of threads on a discussion forum about the tour. Once a tour has started, people WILL be discussing the songs. There should be no need for a "spoiler tag." Same with movie threads. If you don't want to see spoilers about the film, stay out of threads about it once release date draws near.

Oh absolutely. It should be assumed that a thread about the tour is going to have setlist spoilers (even before it was specifically stated). Same goes for movie threads.
But we were also discussing setlist spoilers in the new DT album thread before DT had even played a show, where people may not have expected to see it, so common sense may not have helped there. I'm not sure how many people care that much, but sometimes info slips out in unexpected places.

Sounds like you've got a really good job then if you can listen to music whilst you're working!! :)
-
While it's true that one wants to have the excitement of now knowing what are they going to play next, it's also a good to have a slight idea of What they are going to play.
Some people are just not masters in DT catalog and there are some songs they simply don't know (specially FII and WDADU), so, if a person who isn't very familiarized with Awake, but loves DT12 and SFAM, will be very excited for these parts during the last tour's show, but will be very confused or awkward with the Awake half.
Just a random thought.

Holy crap, you can actually hear JP singing live in CM. That's a first since MM joined. Some songs also feel a bit faster, are they not playing to a click anymore?

We had a slight unschedule addition at yesterday's show! Jordan played a short piano solo between TSCO and About To Crash, featuring the Italian National Anthem (which the crowd proceeded to sing along to once we realised what was going on :D )
Also, James has fully recovered from his illness. He sounds perfectly alright and some now!

An Italian crowd sing along with something? Get outta town! :metal

I have a feeling that MM is using triggers on the bass drums, and this is evident on pretty much every live video from this tour. I'm not sure i like it.

I like these summer tours. Yes, the setlist is usually shorter, but the venues are usually much more fascinating.

It would have been great. It didn't happen, though. There have been two shows in Tuscany since the song was released, I attended both and neither featured TCOT. Not that I was expecting a different outcome, that's the knack with fixed setlists! They did play the national anthem yesterday, though!

I can see myself in the first picture!!!! :metal
In the little tribune under the steeple, on the far left of the picture, in the first row seated there's a girl with a green dress: I am the guy with raising arms (black t shirt) on her left (i.e. On the right of the picture ::) ).
For the record I don't know who she was.
For the second picture, this is Arles indeed not Marseille (not very far but awesome location anyway).

Sweet clip! That's some great playing, the fill at 1:19 is sick!
Also, I'd be totally satisfied if he used that snare drum on the new album, as long as they don't mess with the sound too much. Its nice and tight, decent pitch, I'd be down with that.

That second one reminds me of Nimes - where Metallica filmed their "Francais Pour Une Nuit " DVD.
