:caffeine::caffeine::caffeine::caffeine::caffeine::caffeine::caffeine:
I've been burned by adaptations before but I feel like you'd need to make a concerted effort to fuck up this story.
The Rock for Shadow! That's who Gaiman says would be best (at least from a looks perspective)
-
Been so excited about this for ages, so it's great to hear it's been greenlit now! :caffeine: :caffeine: :caffeine: :caffeine: :caffeine:

I could pry open a locked car trunk with the boner I have right now.
-
I just learned of this. Sounds good and has piqued my interest in Gaiman's work.

Pictures or it didn't happen.

This. Glad it's finally official. I have mixed feelings about The Rock but he would fit the profile. I always pictured Wednesday as looking like George Carlin for some reason, so maybe they can have him resurrected for the role.
-
Hoping noone misinterpreted my first post: The Rock hasn't already been cast he's just who I'm hoping for.
-
I always pictured a thuggish Edward Norton myself.
-
It's never expressly stated in the books to my knowledge but Shadow is definitely half-black half-white. This is primarily based on a part where it talks about Shadow's mother having had sickle-cell anemia, a disease which is far more common in (in fact almost exclusively affecting) women of African descent than any other demographic.
Not that his race is super important (though for obvious reasons he needs to be at least half white) but I think turning a half-non-white person into a full-white person would stir some outrage.

Pretty sure Gaiman himself has already said that the actor cannot be white caucasian, or words to that effect.
-
Yeah, he's definitely not white and he's also supposed to be very large... I love Norton, but no way. Unless you meant Wednesday :lol
-
I wonder how they intend to get the Low Key Lyesmith thing past anyone when it will be said out loud.

Mm, they might need to use a different name possibly. Something that similarly hints at who he is but isn't as obvious out loud.
-
Anybody looking forward to this series? I am so far removed from reading the book I have yet to become really super enthused about it, but I'm sure if I reread it I'll be eager for it.
Anyone else? I hear it's supposed to debut at SXSW this year.
-
Looking very forward to it! The book was wonderful and captivating, and Ian McShane as Wednesday looks like a glorious casting decision :metal
-
Just saw the preview on Starz...April 30th can't come soon enough... :caffeine:
-
And so it begins...
So far, so good. Good casting on Shadow, great casting on Wednesday. Very brutal, very in your face, very surreal and completely out there. That "what the fuck" sense of wonder that encapsulates the book is carried over perfectly in my eyes. Can't wait for more.
-
Watched the first episode last night having never ready the book. Very out there at times, but very interesting. I'm in for at least a few more episodes.
-
First episode and already mind is blown. Awesome concept.
-
Haven't seen the episode yet because work is heavy for the next 2 days but I'm somewhat excited. Wasn't a huge fan of the book but Bryan Fuller is a genius so I'm looking forward to it on the whole.
-
Waiting to see the opinions before watching. I'd have to order STARZ to watch, it's only $9 a month through Amazon but I'm not sure I want to do that yet.
-
Seems pretty positive across the board, especially from peeps like me who treasure the book.
-
First episode was visually and artistically stunning. Good acting too, Shadow and Wednesday both obviously great but I also really liked the other characters like Mad Sweeney and Lyesmith.
Very excited to see how the show develops. The story is so amazing, I hope it translates well. Given Gaiman is directly involved as exec producer, I would imagine that at least the characters are portrayed well and the key themes come out.
-
I'm more a "Watch one episode per day" kind of person so I will patiently wait when the whole season will be over. I guess that knowing and loving the book, I could even survive with some spoilers here and there. But I'm glad that first impressions are all positive, American Gods was a too much mesmerizing book to mess up! :metal
-
Personally, I'm not a fan of the 'heavy on the red-sauce' style of showing violence. It pretty much made Spartacus unwatchable for me.
For this I'm willing to make an exception, though.

Lucy Lawless compensated for everything wrong with that show.
-
Wait, she's in there? Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuu..
-
Holy shit that opening of Ep 2 was some powerful shit. :omg:
-
Yeah, Shadow can't seem to get a f'in' break! ;D
-
Interesting episode tonight, none of that was from the book as far as I know, yet they didn't skip a beat.
-
I don't know. I must be the only one, but at least the first half bored me to to tears. After the car crash, it became more enjoyable
-
Even though it didn't really advance the main story, I really enjoyed last nights episode. It added a layer, dimension, to Mad Sweeny that I wasn't really expecting. I was surprised at the sympathy I felt for him when Laura woke up and punched him. Great episode!
-
The season finale was a pretty big departure from the book and I'm really not understanding why.
-
I enjoyed the first season and the final episode looked spectacular. Maybe a bit too much polish and too little story though.
-
Bumpetee bump.
Finally watched the whole season... I liked it, but I don't know how much I would have enjoyed it without having read the book. I would have found it very slow (2 "detour" episodes out of 8?) and weird, and the story would have looked a bit like a mess.
Some scenes from the book were done more than justice, it was a thrill to see them. And Ian McShane as Wednesday is one of the best castings ever. Still looking forward to the rest, but I'm glad I've read the book before because otherwise I wouldn't have gone and read the book from the TV series.
-
S2 started last night, and it was a pretty dramatic re-introduction to the show. God I wish they'd do more of Nancy, love that frikkin character.
-
Yeah Mr Nancy continues to be brilliant. Really cool episode but I do wish they'd done the House on the Rock at the end of season 1 like they originally planned.
-
I was actually ok with the S1 ending, and I felt this gave S2 a good rolling start.
-
So I've finished season 2.
What.
The.
Hell.
Did I step into an alternate dimension where it's not A Song of Ice and Fire, but American Gods which is not finished, and the authors have to come up with the story? what's this? this is not American Gods, this is a story inspired by American Gods and that uses its characters.... and it bloody sucks!
It's an uncoherent, unfollowable pretentious mess. It makes no sense as adaptation (what's left from the book, 5% ?), and it makes no sense as an original story based on the characters. One thing is to streamline things, to adapt, to change here and there to make concessions to the visual medium, but they completely derailed the story, made tertiary characters protagonists, and made the villain so over the top that it's laughably bad.
What a waste of good production values and an amazing cast - Ian McShane was basically the best one could ever hope for to play Wednesday. And also Mr. Nancy and Mad Sweeney were great. But the story is a complete trainwreck, and a damage to anyone who has not read the book and certainly won't do so after seeing it.
They should cancel it and reboot it 5-10 years down the line. I don't know why they screwed up so, so, so badly.
