Post by: JLa on June 13, 2015, 04:23:37 PM: I was just watching some prog metal in Spanish, and while I couldn't understand the lyrics at all it gave me this idea for a thread. Post some music from your country, in your language. The band/artist are probably not known at all outside of your country, but music is meant to be heard, right?

I'll go first. This is for you heavy rockers out there, this is the Norwegian band Seigmen, performing the song "Döderlein". I don't really know what the song is about, the lyrics are kind of hard to "get". The chorus is "someone deserves a good death", whatever that's supposed to mean. Some say one of the band members were suffering from migraine and his doctor was called Döderlein, I don't know if that's true or not. A good tune anyways!

The default NZ rock band these days is Shihad. They're an interesting band in that they alternate between albums that are quite poppy and ones that are really hard rock. While Unexpect are French they usually (or always? Not super familiar with most of their catalogue) sing in English. Not aware of any French-singing bands off the top of my head, though I'm sure they're out there.

They have played a few shows outside of Finland, but barely anyone knows them abroad, although they're a cult band here and have been awarded a dozen gold records and a few platinum records. However, A.W. Yrjänä's cryptic lyrics are a pretty big part of their music, so I guess it may be difficult to get into them if you don't understand Finnish.

The most acclaimed CMX album is Aura from 1994, and it includes their greatest hit, Ruoste (Rust) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8MJKwA9LZo), which is an acoustic ballad with strings that continues to get radio airplay to this day in Finland.

Faith No More bassist Billy Gould produced their seventh album Vainajala in 1998, here's a song from it: Ei yksikään (No One) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDwflWEfdEk) (reportedly the song got the nickname Hey Mexican from the way Gould tried to pronounce the title :lol)

Aion from 2003 is a thematic album about evil, and it's got some pretty experimental stuff on it, such as the backmasked guitars on Melankolia (Melancholy) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGbdexscFHk).

In 2007 CMX released a sci-fi concept album called Talvikuningas (The Winter King), which is probably the closest they ever got to prog metal - there are heavy Tool and Rush influences on that record. The latest album Mesmeria came out earlier this year, here's the lead single Rakkaudessa ja sodassa (In Love and War) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6LiZy6R0D0). I love Nusrat, though I've never listened to any of his "crossover" albums. I stick to albums like Shahen Shah, Shahbaaz, and his Paris concerts.

I'll keep the ball rolling with some more Norwegian stuff. This is folk rockers Gåte, blending traditional folk tunes with rock and electronica elements. Being old traditional songs and poems, lyrics are being sung in old rural Norwegian dialects.

They are one of the most clever, interesting and consistently good bands I know. Their riffs are just so... fun! I don't know how else to put it.

The band has released six albums, of which the sophomore effort Uudet Kymmenen Käskyä (New Ten Commandments) and the fourth one Viimeinen Atlantis (The Last Atlantis) are generally the most acclaimed ones. They also happen to be my favorite records of Stam1na, though all their stuff is really awesome. I think they have not released even one bad song so far, that's saying something.

The lyrics are naturally all in Finnish, but I really wish you all could understand them. I rarely pay attention to lyrics at all, but the ones written by Stam1na's frontman Antti "Hyrde" Hyyrynen are just so twisted (not in a creepy kind of way), interesting and clever that even I get tremendous joy out of them. Finnish lyrics are generally pretty bad I think but this band proves the power of words when done right.

Here is Merestä Maalle (From Sea To Land) off of Uudet Kymmenen Käskyä. A more groovy track with awesome rhythmic guitar work and trademark vocals from Hyyrynen.
