As promised, we're streaming the big chamber gig we are playing today. Both albums in full, new chamber arrangements and a lot of Russian speaking (sorry for that:). The streaming will take place at our official YouTube channel
Part 1 was AWESOME. :hat

Managed to hear some songs before it ended. That was... beautiful :heart .
-
wow thanks..will watch later.
ironic how I'm streaming the Steven Wilson show from LA right now, and Marjana is such a huge fan of his. A stream on the same day as one of her favorites.

Featuring guests Gavin Harrison, Colin Edwin and Mariusz Duda (Riverside, Luantic Soul) and engineered/mixed by Marcel Van Limbeek (Tori Amos), Lighthouse is the 2016 album from Russian Post-Progressive duo iamthemorning.
Rich and eclectic, Ligthouse possesses elements of Classical music, Canterbury Prog, northern Folk, Jazz and Ambient music.
Recorded across London, Moscow and St Petersburg, the core instrument of the band, the grand piano, was recorded in Mosfilm Studios Moscow, the largest and oldest studios in Russia. Founded in 1920, Mosfilm is renowned for recording orchestras for soundtracks for the most famous Soviet-era films, including works by Tarkovsky and Eisenstein.
Lighthouse chronicles the progression of mental illness. The album takes the listener through the stages of breakdown via a central character - her attempts to fight it, temporal remission leading to a final collapse and has been inspired by the works and lives of Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath.
The album artwork for Lighthouse was created by watercolour artist and long-term collaborator, Constantine Nagishkin.

Saw Mariusz post about this on facebook this morning, and I'm definitely interested.
-
Colour me hyped :caffeine:
-
The vinyl is a must-have for me. :hat
Oh, and last autumn, I got to see iamthemorning live (supporting Gazpacho). It's kinda rare to have a singer that can immediately draw the attention of everyone in the audience. Marjana did just that. This band has a bright future if they do it right.

Can we make it the band's thread?

New song sounds very promising :o

So, today is one of the two Lighthouse release gigs in Russia. Here's my view from the first row, center.

This should be seriously awesome.

Post Scriptum
Amazing show. The new album really works well live (except perhaps for Clear Clearer - Sleeping Pills section), especially Too Many Years and Chalk and Coal. I was so immersed in the music those two hours just went by.
I usually don't take any photos at the shows since I think it's kind of disrespectful—especially if you're at front row in the theater— but I did take some with bad focus. Here are the best of them:

And I've also got a video of my favourite moment from the new album... here's Lighthouse ending without Mariusz Duda. Perhaps not as powerful as it's on the album, but I still had chills from this. Turn the HD on, otherwise the sound isn't so good.

I also got all three of their studio CDs in digipack versions from the merch stand so I am a happy person right now.
-
Awesome - thanks for posting! :tup
-
I'm intrigued by the name, the band style, their cover arts and a song I'm listening on YouTube (Chalk & Coal). Will check them out!
-
The singer, Marjana, is also very active on Facebook.

Livestream tomorrow....

Had a chat with Gleb and Marjana after the show in Moscow today. Here's what I learned:
- their new album will be out next year, they're not exactly sure which month or season it'll be out yet, but definitely next year;
- they had some heavy brainstorming and writing sessions for the new album last month, put it on hold for the two shows in Russia (they played in their hometown last week and Moscow today), and now the writing sessions will resume;
- Gleb wanted to play a solo show in Moscow as a presentation for his solo album (which they sold at merch stand today, I bought it and got it signed by Gleb :metal ) but had to postpone this idea because of the writing for IATM 4; he said he'll probably do it later, maybe in late autumn or winter;
- they already have some songs written and a lot of ideas for the other songs, they're playing some new songs live now - not sure how it is with the other shows, but today they played two new songs without any additional musicians, just Gleb on piano and Marjana on vocals;
- one of the new songs is called Six Feet and it's about a girl buried alive (I think?), this title is probably gonna make in on the album; the song is pretty dark with some Sleeping Pills-esque chorus (I think? Hard to tell from one listen tbh), I guess this is going to be even darker with the bass and whatever arrangements they'll make;
- the second song they played is called Ghost of a Story, this is a working title and Marjana said it will probably be changed before the release; I loved this one, thought it was way better than Six Feet;
- after the show Marjana said they're looking for a guest vocalist for one of the songs (I think for Six Feet, but I'm not sure, missed that part) to sing the second verse because it fits the song from a narrative standpoint; they're looking for a British male singer and they already have someone in mind;
Gleb is very happy with how his solo album turned out, I told him it was a great feat to actually get all the guest musicians on board and he agreed saying it was quite a quest. Also got complimented by Marjana on my Leprous shirt. All in all, great evening, small sitting venue (I was lucky to get a first row seat) and it was good to see some heavier songs played - they had bass, drums and electric guitar players in the lineup today.
-
That's awesome, Evermind.
I would love to see a solo Gleb show. Checked out his album recently and was blown away, it's a really damn good album!
-
I swear I've seen like three dozen iamthemorning threads here
Also, all that information has me HYPED for iamthe4ning. Especially the descriptions of the two new possible songs. What did Ghost of a Story sound like?
And yeah, his new solo album is close to the level of the 3 iamthemorning albums. Only thing that really drags it down for me is the Steve Hogarth guest spots. I just really do not like the sound of his voice :/
-

Also, all that information has me HYPED for iamthe4ning. Especially the descriptions of the two new possible songs. What did Ghost of a Story sound like?
The things that stood out the most about Ghost of a Story were some beautiful piano passages and Marjana not doing high notes, so if I had to describe it now, think Oz Lunatum verses but with a slower pace. However, I was so immersed in the show I can't quite remember any melodies from the songs now. :P So I guess take my descriptions of new songs with a grain of salt.
I saw people around me filming some of the songs, so maybe you can find them on YouTube.
-
In three months time I will see them live for the first time.... really looking forward to the Progressive Circus festival
-
As much as I usually envy you American and European folks for all the great bands touring your countries, here's my view for iamthemorning gig coming up in a few minutes:

Have fun!!! :metal
-
Envious.... have a great concert. I'm sure it will be....
-
It sure was! They were streaming the concert on Facebook, the whole video is there if you want to check it out. They played a bunch of new songs, four during the main set, and I think the one in the second encore was also new. The first one featured Marjana on acoustic guitar, the second I think was the one they called Ghost of a Story before, but with completely reworked lyrics and added sections (it was great), the third one was Six Feet (still not crazy about it) and the fourth one, well, was there. Don't remember much about it, but you can watch it on Facebook.
They had two additional people with them today, playing violin and cello. Once again I'm convinced that iamthemorning with strings is way better than iamthemorning with electric setting.
The show had two acts, the songs from the first two albums in the first act, intermission, then new songs and Lighthouse ones in the second act (ending with K.O.S. as usual), including Too Many Years. First encore was Matches, second encore was a new song. Marjana forgot to print a setlist and didn't know what song would come next. At one moment she started singing Sleeping Pills while Gleb started playing a new song. :lol I'm pretty sure it's also in the video.
I sat in the front row right next to the phone that was streaming the show (to the right). I considered photobombing it at one point too. :lol Also the whole "stage" didn't have a stage, the seats were at the same level with the band, and so the mic stand was about a meter from me. Also the venue had a good cider. Here's me, in my iamthemorning t-shirt, returning to my seat with the aforementioned cider:
:lol
Ninjabait, I didn't talk to Marjana this time, but I asked Gleb your question about sheet music, he said that would be difficult for iamthemorning as he doesn't have any notes for the material so that would take a lot of time to do it. He does, however, have notes for his solo album and he said he was toying with the idea of releasing them via bandcamp, but couldn't find the time with his current schedule. A few more people heard me asking that and also pitched in, encouraging him to do it, so he said he'll try to release it for his solo album, but made no promises about iamthemorning sheet music.
All in all, had a great time, will go see them again next time or will even take a train to St. Petersburg if they're playing there anytime soon. This band is just great.
-
Still envious of you getting to see iamthemorning live now......
Haven't had time to watch the recording yet but will do.
Marjana now takes questions for an upcoming IATM4 FAQ video from the people who support her on Patreon:
https://www.patreon.com/posts/26576889
-
Watched the recording of the show yesterday. Had to ask Marjana on Patreon to open it up again as she had closed it.
What a beautiful concert...... would so have loved to see it even if I did not understand one word she was saying.
Really hope they tour with IATM4 and that they do a stop in Sweden. Would love a chamber version tour.....

His solo album is fantastic so I'd be very happy to get my mitts on some sheet music for that. I've pretty much consistently had trouble getting any sort of sheet music or tabs of Bandcamp and I'm a little bummed about the lack of iamthemorning sheet music tho. I'll be sure to grab that whenever it drops

Our new album The Bell is out on Kscope on August 2nd.
Preorder: iamthemorning.lnk.to/TheBellFA
Soon on Bandcamp
1. Freak Show [07:09]
2. Sleeping Beauty [03:42]
3. Blue Sea [03:08]
4. Black And Blue [03:58]
5. Six Feet [03:56]
6. Ghost Of A Story [03:58]
7. Song Of Psyche [03:20]
8. Lilies[04:28]
9. Salute [07:27]
10. The Bell [05:04]
The Bell was inspired by 19th century song cycles, a genre established by Schubert, and themes from Victorian England art and culture. It is divided into two parts, but each song is a story in its own right, all of them are fuelled by human cruelty and pain caused by it. Cruelty and different ways that we cope with it and suffer from it is the central theme of the album. This album is multi-layered and is, in many ways, a journey inwards, taking us inside of a mind of a person suffering from abuse or neglect or open hostility of the society or a specific person.
And even though aesthetically the album is based on themes taken from Victorian England’s art and culture, it is mainly a way to look at ourselves and modern society and realise that at its core, humankind isn’t making much progress in terms of emotional maturity.
-
Hell yes! Love the artwork.

-
Yes..... it's fantastic. Have known this for quite some time and been dying to tell you.
-
Oh.... and their bandcamp will soon have very special editions with lots of "bells" and whistles....
-
I asked Marjana and Gleb a whlie ago about where should I buy/order their stuff so it would be the most profitable for them, and they said bandcamp, so that's where I'll be pre-ordering from for sure.
-
Schubert song cycles as inspiration? Sign me up. I was pumped about this before, but now I'm like...double pumped. Judging solely by the limited info we've been given, I'm most excited for the last two songs on the album.
And I agree that that artwork is fantastic. iamthemorning always has great artwork.
August can't come soon enough.
-
Not sure if there was any info there about the bell that is on the cover and where Marjana drew her inspiration to the lyrics from but that is also soo interresting (she has been feeding her Patreons with info).
-
I considered signing up for her Patreon to support her but then I have a limited budget for monthly subscriptions and I don't know what to drop from the ones I'm already signed for, so I guess I'll pass for now and will save the money for concerts and the stuff they release. Especially with the currency rates right now in Russia. The ticket for the latest gig cost me ~$7. Patreon is at least $5 a month. I feel it's more foreign-oriented too, considering Marjana has to prove to the UK folks she earns enough to live there on a constant basis.
I don't think there was any info about that, she certainly didn't talk about bells during the show or after it (from what I've heard of), but I'm sure it'll come up in the interviews as the release date growls closer.

Stumbled upon pictures from the Moscow gig this morning and hey, actually found one with my face in it. I'm on the right.

Yep.
-
The bell on the cover is a depiction of a coffin bell - the Victorians were terrified of being buried alive, and so there was a brief vogue for having a bell attached to the headstone, with a cord leading down into the coffin, so that the inhumed could ring the bell to alert people that they were still alive.
Anyway, really looking forward to this, Ocean Sounds was superb.

Huh, I wonder if one of the songs will deal with a poetic subject wondering whether to ring the bell or just lie there and die.
-
I bet it will. It sounds like a typical iamthemorning song subject, now that you put it like that.
-
The Bell is now up for preorder on iamthemornings bandcamp.
There are some wonderful special editions.... I ordered the one with a bronze bell.

Same, ordered the big CD package with the bell. :tup
-
The first single, Ghost of a Story, is out now. First impression: easily one of their best songs. And that's saying something
-
Heard it live already. :P It's pretty much nothing new from them, but it just so happens that I love their music so I'm fine with that. The song is very good.

Review:
https://www.sonicperspectives.com/album-reviews/iamthemorning-the-bell/
-
The new album "The Bell" just dropped yesterday. It's pretty much exactly what I expected and it's at the same level of quality as their past three albums. Salute is probably my favorite song off the album (and imo one of their best), but I will acknowledge it's a lil weird. Not really a song I actively disliked on there, which has been the case for the last three albums too.
-
It's a great album, and yet another contender for album of the year in what has been a year full of great albums.
This is so full, so sumptuous, it's going to take multiple listens to really reveal itself. I love it - their strongest yet, and like you say, no obvious filler either. Only real problem - it's too short!
-
I got the album late last week but I've been listening to Gleb's solo album a lot lately. Not sure why I didn't play it when it was released but damn...crazy good. Loved how Gavin Harrison's drumming is on this one, a bit different on what I'm used to hearing him.
-
Two things.....
1. Found out that Gleb Kolyadin has been releasing instrumental music under the moniquer Poloniumcubes at bandcamp.
https://poloniumcubes.bandcamp.com
Very soothing music
2. iamthemornings touring drummer, Evan Carson, has released a soloalbum (cowritten by Gleb Kolyadin)
https://evancarsondrums.bandcamp.com/album/ocipinski
For me, this is a strong contender for album of the year

Also seeing them tomorrow, they're supposed to have Evan Carson's album at the merch stand so hopefully I'll be able to grab one and get it signed.
This went successfully enough, most people were speaking to Marjana so I had a nice chat with Evan (as did a few other people who approached him) and I actually happened to grab a red pen from my working place so the signatures by Evan and Gleb ended up fitting the album cover so well:
Didn't bother Gleb (except for the signature and to remind him he promised to put out his solo album piano notes last time) or Marjana as I mostly have all their albums signed, Evan was the friendliest guy ever though. I'm glad he's becoming somewhat of a regular with iamthemorning, he fits the band so well both performance-wise and attitude-wise. Also, the band exchanged our ugly e-tickets for these beautiful ones (see photos), and it's such an easy and nice gesture but I'm over the moon about this. Damn, these tickets are fantastic.
The merch stand was excessive tonight. All their albums on CD, vinyls, two t-shirts, tote bags, bells, five different pins, Evan's album, probably more stuff that I haven't noticed. If you guys ever need something obscure from this band signed by Marjana and Gleb, let me know and I'll do my best to get it.
-
Wish I could see them live now with
The Bell out. How were the new songs live?
Also wish I could see Evan Carson do Ocipinski live.... I totally love that album.
Glad you got it signed and talked to him, he seems like a very likeable fellow.

Missed this post, the new songs were interesting, now that I was more familiar with them. I thought the transition between Sleeping Beauty and Blue Sea was amazing, with Marjana playing guitar on Blue Sea. Ghost of a Story is my favourite from the album and it's great live. Freak Show isn't that impressive live at least with only a drummer and a cellist, it lacked some oomph to my taste, although that was probably the only song where Evan got to drum in earnest. Also they played Lilies which, as they said, they're only playing if they have a proper grand piano on stage. Gleb is such a beast, it's fascinating to watch him play that one. Gleb also wanted to do a seamless transition from Lilies to Salute but Marjana interrupted that with a story so the transition didn't happen :lol The title track is also very impressive live.
I'd say Blue Sea, Ghost of a Story, Lilies and The Bell work really great in a live setting. We'll see about the other songs, I assume I'll see them at least a few more times live in the next few years.
-
Thanks for the info......
I will get to see some new songs as I have tickets for The Flower Kings in Stockholm on the 14th of December.
Kayak has had to cancel due to health issues by Ton Scherpenzeel and are replaced with
iamthemorning
and
Rickard Sjöblom
-
Excited for you, everyone who will see them, and the band themselves! Let us know how it goes.
-
Marjana has cowritten two songs on Blurring Into Motion, an album by Charlie Cawood. She also sings on those two songs and Evan Carson plays bodhran and shakers on the album.
Check out a lyric video for Falling Into Blue, one of the two Marjana Semkina songs:

Today is the day:
Marjana tweeted this:
Today is the day. Check my socials at 3 GMT or @kscopemusic at 4 for a lot of flowers and dead things. 🌸💀

Hmm, I see nothing new...

Okay, now it's online.

Interesting, looking forward to it!
I think I won't preorder this time though, none of the bundles look too appealing. I'm fairly sure they'll be selling this one next time I see them, that's when I'll get it.
-
I don't have any use for Vinyls or casettes so I preordered the Bigger CD bundle. Partly to support Marjana, partly because I like tshirts, totebags and stuff....
-
Excited as hell. Getting solo albums from both Marjana and Gleb in addition to iatm albums means three counts of this unique, good music they make.

I love it, fantastic. (mind you, I've yet to familiarise myself with iatm, but it will be worthwhile I'm sure. Marjana's timbre and phrasing are great IMHO)
-
Had a fantastic time at the last show of the The Flower Kings, iamthemorning and Rickard Sjöblom tour on saturday.
Fantastic night out in Stockholm, first a meet up with 15 other progressive music lovers talking over a dinner at O'Leary's and then a concert with three fantastic acts.
First Rickard Sjöblom with Marjana Semkinas guitar playing some Beardfish and Gungfly songs. Then he is joined by Jonas Reingold for a Big Big Train song. And then Roine Stolt, Zack Kamins and Mirkko de Maio join in for Björn Json Linds Brusa högre lilla å..... beautiful
Then comes iamthemorning, the Russian duo Marjana Semkina and Gleb Kolyadin who on this tour were accompanied by the amazing Evan Carson and a Cello player that I did not get the name of. Utterly spellbinding show, though too short. Hope they come back in the near future.
I think they got a better reception than they had expected, the cheers did not want to end.
And The Flower Kings.... probably the best concert I have seen with them so far. Stardust We are..... so great!!!
Also great to see Hasse Bruniusson guesting on The Truth Will Set You Free.
And as a closer everyone comes up on stage and does The Beatles song Long and Winding Road.
Wow..... marvellous concert
I have plugged Evan Carsons album Ocipinski on FB tagging him.
He recognised me at the front of the audience and came up to me after the iamthemorning gig, took my hand and thanked me for all the support.
After the show I got Ocipinski signed by both Evan and Gleb and got a very nice chat with them both covering lot's of ground, espescially interresting to hear some of their plans for the future.
I also talked a bit to Marjana.

Sounds good! What did iamthemorning play at your show? I looked at the previous setlists and they seem to rotate a few songs.
-
I'm quite sure it was this setlist (did not take notes but looks right to me):
Touching II
Sleeping Beauty
Blue Sea
5/4
Freak Show
Salute
Chalk and Coal
K.O.S.
Short but sweet.... loved hearing the new songs
The older songs were also played in Malmö last year but with this setting it was like hearing them fresh....

Mariana Semkinas album Sleepwalking is released today.
Brilliant album.....
She also released a video for Still Life (with Jordan Rudess on piano)

Didn't have an opportunity to listen yet, need to do it on weekend before my trip to St. Petersburg. Wonder if I can pick up the album there, I should actually write to the band and ask them I guess.

I paid a lot more but then I will get a CD, a mask, a beanie and socks.
The EP is good and the proceeds will finance the next full album

Gleb Kolyadin is performing in Moscow tomorrow with the presentation of his solo album, Water Movements, and the circumstances aligned for me so I'll be there, got a ticket for the front row! Excited to see live concert for a change, it's been a while. I wonder if I'll be able to talk to Gleb or that'll be shut down due to the Covid restrictions, we'll see.
Update for SwedishGoose and other two fans frequenting this thread: I did talk to Gleb (signed my copy of Water Movements too). He said he has a new, more full-fledged solo album written already. If everything works out, it may even be released this winter. He said it'll be more in a jazz-prog vein. I asked about possible guests, he said Evan Carson is a given, no information about others yet though.

Oh, that is great news.... would love a new album by Gleb and love when he and Evan cooperate

Terrible things happening in the iamthemorning camp now.
Gleb is on tour with Belarusian band Bi-2 and all of them have been arrested in Thailand over some issues with papers.
They are thretend with deportation to Russia.
See Marjana's post here about how you can help:

Oh shit, I saw the B-2 news but didn't know Gleb was touring with them as a session keyboard player. This doesn't look good at all. I hope he doesn't get deported back here, I expect the government here to make an example of the band if they get deported to Russia, and I don't expect the government to know the difference between band members and session musicians.
-
Marjana shared the news with her Patreons on discord yesterday.
Feels like such a nightmare since then.
I really hope the deportation threat is not realized.
That would probably be the end of iamthemorning.
-
Let's hope that the attention this gets stops the deportation

This is really awful. Glad CNN picked it up at least.

Please sign this petition to stop members of Bi-2 plus session musiscian Gleb Kolyadin (iamthemorning) from being deported to Russia.

Gleb is back on UK grounds....
Marjana just posted a photo to her patreons of the two of them at arrivals....
So glad that this turned out fine....
There is hope for iamthemorning again

yes, very happy news.
-
I'd be worried if that was really some kind of a setup and they're trying to make an example of them, that it could happen again if they continue to tour globally, and possibly with a less happy ending next time.

Thailand should definitely be out of any former russians schedules.
I think the russian consul hoped that with thailand beeing one of few countries where russian tourists are welcome that they could excert power.
Luckily a lot of other agents got involved and the russian plans did not work this time.
I guess both Bi-2 and Gleb will think twice about any touring plans in the future. Any musiscians with russian citizenship should be cautious after this.

Marjana had a really nice patreon zoom hangout yesterday where she played som covers on acustic guitar, Norwegian Wood (Beatles), My Ashes (Porcupine Tree) and On the Turning Away (Pink Floyd) were some of them.
But she also talked a lot and answered questions.
Very nice hang out and there is some interresting things coming up.
Gleb wasn't there this time but he seems fine although Marjana thought the full impact of what happened had not sunk in yet.
There is soon a concert by iamthemorning in London on the 14th.... whish I could go.
