Title: Neal Morse Survivor 2015 - Results & Discussion
Post by: The Letter M on June 10, 2015, 12:59:03 PM
Hello and welcome to my 3rd (Semi-)Annual Neal Morse Survivor, for the 2015 season! Here I will post the album results, and eventually, the finals! To start off with, I'll post the track lists/options for each survivor, then as we finish each album, I'll update the track lists with the final results.

As usual, each album's 3rd place song will move to Consolation, with the exception Testimony, which will have it's 5th and 6th place songs move into Consolation, while it's top 4 songs will move to the Finals (as I have done with previous double albums in other Survivors).

Because of that, the Consolation Rounds will consist of 9 songs (2 from Testimony, and 1 each from the other 7 albums) and the Finals will consist of 20 songs (4 from Testimony, and 2 from each of the other 7 albums, plus the top 2 of the Consolation Rounds).

***Due to lack of interest in them, the first two solo albums, the self-titled debut and It's Not Too Late, will be omitted for this year's survivor.***

My first question to the folks participating: Should I include the Richard Harris cover, "MacArthur Park", in the Special Edition Track list of The Grand Experiment? It *IS* a cover song, albeit a wildly re-arranged one by Bill, but up until its release, Mike and Randy (and who knows who else) were convinced it would be on the album proper, but I guess Neal or the others vetoed that out and it was relegated to Bonus Disc status.

But because it was considered for placement on the main album, I'm tempted to keep it on THAT album's survivor, but I am tinkering with the idea of doing a fun "Covers Survivor" after the whole thing is done with Finals and all, and could possibly place "MacArthur Park" in THAT survivor, and just leave TGE with its 7 original songs and not include the cover.

What do you guys think - leave "MacArthur Park" on TGE or exclude it (and save it for the Covers survivor)?

I'm following!  Thanks for running yet another survivor poll.

Regarding MacArthur Park: it's a "grand" rendition, but my opinion can be expressed in the words of the English Beat: "Save it for Later".

I would leave off MacArthur Park, and any other covers.

They are covers.

Also, I will not be participating for those first two albums.

Not that I have listened to the album so much that I could participate, but shouldn't Song From November be part of this? I mean, if you left the first two albums off then that would be fine. But if the Self-Titled and It's Not Too Late are on here, then I think Songs From November should be too.

And, no on MacArthur Park. But, yes on covers Survivor!

Good point, but considering it was a self-made solo album on his own personal record label, Radiant Records, I didn't think to include it. The first two albums he made were released through InsideOut, and at very leasta, the self-titled debut had more prog elements, including a 4-movement epic.

If the general consensus is NOT to include the first two albums and just start with Testimony, then I can do that, which would then mean leaving out Songs From November easily.

Up to you guys - I don't care either way. If not a lot of folks are familiar with them, or care about them enough to participate, then I'll just start with his first major solo prog release.

I like both first albums, but I could see why most wouldn't vote for them. And since the only prog-ish track on either of those discs is split up, it's no use sending it to the next round.
Again, I'd love to vote for em, but I don't think the songs will get far anyway.

Looking at the Finals final ranking on my last Neal Morse Survivor, here's where the four tracks from the first two albums landed:
12. A Whole Nother Trip

20. The Change
21. Living Out Loud
22. It's Not Too Late

And 22 is the last place song, sooooo yeah. That's pretty self-explanatory.

You could leave off those albums and I wouldn't even notice.

The Survivor for Testimony is finally over with, and the results have been posted in the OP.

The top four songs (It's All I Can Do, Sing It High, Somber Days, Oh, To Feel Him) move to the Finals, while the 5th and 6th place songs (Wasted Life and Sleeping Jesus) move to the Consolation rounds.

ONE has already begun!

Finally got around to updating this with the results for the first three albums and their Finalists and Consolation songs in their respective survivors near the bottom of the OP.

We're on track through the 4-songs Sola Scriptura, then onto 9 tracks with Lifeline! Halfway through, and oddly enough, we managed to get through SS and ? just around Neal's second MORSEFEST, which featured those albums performed in their entirety! Brilliant!

Wrapped up the ending of Momentum, where the album's epic takes the top spot while the Thoughts sequel takes second and joins it in the Finals. The title track moves into Consolation as well.

We're on the final album, Neal's latest with the Neal Morse Band, The Grand Experiment, and then in the next couple of weeks, we'll begin the Consolation Rounds, where nine songs face off to see which of the top two will move on to the Finals!

Once again, for the 2nd time in a row, "Seeds Of Gold" takes the gold! The final Finals list is updated in the original post, and for comparison, here's the previous Finals line-up from the 2012-2013 Survivor:

2. World Without End
3. The Door

7. The Creation
8. The Conclusion
9. Crossing Over/Mercy Street (Reprise)

Thanks again for everyone who stuck it through with this. Is anyone still interested in doing a short Covers Survivor for Neal Morse? If there isn't at least 3 or 4 folks who want to do it, then I'll just forego it this time around and gear up for my Spock's Beard Survivor for 2016!

So many roads was number 5 last time around (fair spot if you ask me), yet it's nowhere to be seen this time around. Too bad.

Nice number one and solid list overall. Thank you once again for running this, M.  :tup

So many roads was number 5 last time around (fair spot if you ask me), yet it's nowhere to be seen this time around. Too bad.
...and the new number 5 Author of Confusion was nowhere to be found last time around.

What stands out to me is the resurgence of the One album in the top 5 with both Separated Man and The Creation each moving up 4 spots from last time!  I like it.   :hefdaddy

Great job, M.  Thanks for running this survivor.  It was fun.   :tup

Interesting that a Consolation song only just missed out on winning the whole thing by just 1 vote.
