Wow, I can't believe it's been a year and a half since I last ran one of these. Time flies.
The format will be a little different than last time. Looking for 10 participants. Right now I am planning on 8-10 rounds. Someone will be cut after the second round, and one player will be cut each round after that until we get down to 6 players. If you followed last time, my rounds were pretty open as far as what could be sent. This time they are even more open. In fact every round is open. The only restriction is that you send some awesome music.
Here is a link to my last.fm, my previous roulette, and my top 50 albums to get an idea of what I like and what is banned from sending. I'll try to update the banned list here soon. In general if I've listened to an artist more than 10-20 times, they are probably banned (ask if it looks like a may have overlooked something awesome by that artist).

Your banned list is pretty big for me, but what the hell I'll give it a shot anyway. You did great in my roulette so hopefully it works both ways.
-
I'll give it a shot. :)
-
Count me in.
-
This should be interesting - I'll join :hat .
-
I'll have a go BH.................your taste blows mine away in terms of diversity , but I can probably come up with a few things within my little area of interest .
-
In.
-
If you'll have me, I'll play.
-
I should be able to scrape up at least 8-10 things to send, though I'll probably be eliminated before I need to send all of them. :lol Sign me up.
-
If You'd have me sir.
-
I'd like the chance to please you, good sir.
-
ok, that's 10. This is looking like a strong group of participants!
Elite is back to defend his crown as he won my last roulette. Scorp and LieLow are also repeat contenders, trying to improve on their finishes last time out.
Lots of newcomers headlined by one of the most successful roulette players recently, senecadawg2. Will someone keep Elite from back to back Big Hath roulette glory?
-
First round is open for business! It will be very interesting to see what kind of submissions we have and what scores well.

I'm gonna study your first roulette, top 50 and last fm real quick and send in a few hours... should be a good one!
-
To all participants: please PM youtube or grooveshark links if you can find your songs there. If you need to send me an email with an attachment, let me know.
-
When I get home form work, I'll do my homework on you :lol and send a song tonight!

I won't copy the quote, but the sentiment is the same!
Also, I was wondering how you will do the scoring? Is it the same as in last roulette, or a different system overall?
To all other contestants:
I'M HERE TO DEFEND MY CROWN APPARENTLY SO YOU ALL BETTER BEWARE

Also, I was wondering how you will do the scoring? Is it the same as in last roulette, or a different system overall?
this time around I'm going to rate on a scale from 1.0 to 10.0 (hopefully not too many songs will be in the 1 - 4ish range), and two songs can theoretically receive the same score instead of the stacked ranking from my last roulette.

I'M HERE TO DEFEND MY CROWN APPARENTLY SO YOU ALL BETTER BEWARE
*Pumps chest*
*Then coughs from holding in breath to make check big*

I believe everyone has sent except lielow at this point.
I can tell you from listening to about half the submissions thus far that you guys have come out of the gate with guns blazing!
-
Sweet! Can't wait for the reviews!
-
still need a song from LieLow.
-
My bad. Sent!

:caffeine:
-
now that all songs are in, I am listening and will have the results by Friday night (US) at the latest.
-
okay boys and girls, we've got scores!
LieLowTheWantedMan: Kairon; IRSE! - Valorians: I can appreciate the music, and the dreamy kind of atmosphere is pretty cool, but for the most part this genre is not for me. I like really clean production and it sounds like the band is playing inside a running washing machine. There is a twinge of In The Court of the Crimson King that comes through though, that is pretty cool.
Score: 6.0
Scorpion: Dark Empire - The Forgotten Sin: For some reason the production seems a bit off during the heavy sections – almost has a doomy/sludgy feel when the music seems like it should be more in my face. The vocals aren't really my favorite. There's not toooo much wrong with the song, but it just kind of sits there for me while listening.
Score: 7.0
adace: Scale The Summit - Atlas Novus: Kind of lulls you into a trance. A bit reminiscent of Yes at times. Ultimately a really nice instrumental piece, but it lacked a bit of magic that they typically need to draw you in and become memorable.
Score: 7.0
Tom Bombadil: Wings Denied - Generation Y: Slightly too busy for me, but I appreciate the heaviness, and extremely tight playing. Sounded a bit too "generic modern prog metal", if that is the right phrase. Good song but doesn't grab me as much as some of the better ones this round.
Score: 7.5
Sacul: Throne Of Chaos - The Window: Vocals are a little weird for me, kind of too theatrical is my first thought. Nice Rhodes during the break. And after the break I like the shift back into the faster pace with the soaring guitar solo – that kind of had a 70's tv show feel to me for some reason. My wife just walked in and said she liked this song, so that's worth an extra half point. Overall a really cool song.
Score: 8.0
senecadawg2: Angra - Make Believe: Feels like I'm at church at the beginning, I like the Hammond. The guy obviously has a great voice, but the vocals are slightly too emotional for me with a very slight whiny component. I kind of wanted him to be quiet for a bit so I could hear the guitar solo better. I like the acoustic playing over the crunchy rhythm guitar. Very cool relaxed feel to the song even though there is a lot going on.
Score: 8.0
Elite: Darkwater - Again: I like the low key opening in the verses with the extremely crunchy guitars. Tasty riffing during the second half of each verse. Very tight playing by these guys. The bass guitar is really punchy and cuts through in the mix, I like that sound. Portions of the song, primarily the chorus I think, reminds me of Speaking To Stones.
Score: 8.5
Bolsters: Thoughts Factory - No Way Out: So far this wins the title for best riffage this round (probably the quickest way to my heart in the musical sense, hint hint). The vocals remind me of Circus Maximus/Michael Eriksen, which is not a bad thing.
Score: 8.5
bl5150: Arion - Shadows: Nice and heavy! I really like the guitar tone. What does that keyboard solo remind me of? Going to have to think about that one for a bit – maybe something from Images & Words? This song really grabs you and doesn't let go.
Score: 9.0
kingshmegland: A.C.T. - A Truly Gifted Man: Cool reggae groove. This guy sounds like Michael Jackson at the beginning. Pretty cool 80s rock throwback sound with a bit of hip hop production in the vocals. Love that Toto influence. Really enjoyed the vocal performance. My one concern: does this band have enough variety in their music to keep me interested over an entire album, and with multiple listens?
Score: 9.0
Guys, this was an awesome round. If the rest of the roulette is of this quality, I will be very happy. Every song provided at least some level of enjoyment and those at the top were really, really good to my ears.

Very glad you liked it. I'd convinced myself that the song wasn't going to be good enough after I'd sent it, which I do all the time in roulettes. I really should try to have more confidence. :lol
Round 2 has been transmitted.

Dang. Oh well, not everyone can like good music. :P
Will send later.

it's been another awesome round. Will get in one more round of listening to the songs tonight and post results.
-
it's been another awesome round.
:dangerwillrobinson:
-
like I said earlier, this was a great round. You guys are sending some awesome music!
adace: If These Trees Could Talk - Thirty-Six Silos: Good stuff. I liked the climax around the 3 minute mark. I've dabbled in the post-rock genre, but I can't say I've fully come around to it yet. It gave me the feeling of a slightly more polished GYBE song. Other than that, I felt about the same way for this instrumental as that of the last round. Really needed something to push it over the top to become memorable.
Score: 7.0
kingshmegland: Dada - Baby Really Loves Me: I can dig it. I thought there was some very interesting things going on between the guitar and bass. It's decent enough, I just don't think I would choose to listen to this very often.
Score: 7.5
LieLowTheWantedMan: Talking Heads - Crosseyed And Painless: I'm familiar with some of their output later in the decade, but never really delved into their discography. This song has some cool stuff going on, especially rhythmically, to drive the song forward. Also really enjoy that thumping bass line. It has qualities that makes me think Beck took some inspiration from this on some of his earlier albums.
Score: 7.5
Bolsters: The Black Mages - Maybe I'm a Lion: With this band name I was thinking this was going to be some heavy doom. It was not. I like the groove. There is a very strong Led Zeppelin vibe especially early in the song. And lots of keyboard everywhere. I take it these guys are somehow part of the video game world and this definitely has that epic video game feel to it even though it is a rock/metal version. Lots of heavy riffing makes for an ultimately very cool song. Gong!
Score: 8.0
Tom Bombadil: Umphrey's Mcgee - In the Kitchen: From this band's name I was expecting some kind of raucous Irish punk, something akin to The Pogues or Dropkick Murphys. It turns out this is kind of laid back and really jammy, which was a bit of a relief. While it's something I would have to be in the mood for, I quite enjoyed this song. That little riff/rhythm during the short instrumental break (right before I guess what you'd call the bridge) that returns near the end of the song keeps getting stuck in my head.
Score: 8.0
Sacul: Orphaned Land - All Is One: So I m a big fan of middle-eastern influences in metal music, whether it be an established band borrowing instruments/influences or a band from that area of the world mixing their background with the music they create (such as Myrath). The “epic choir” was pretty cool. And the song as a whole was pretty great, but for some reason I feel like I should have liked this more than I did. After the few listens I've had I can tell it is really growing on me though.
Score: 8.0
senecadawg2: Thank You Scientist - A Salesman's Guide to Non-Existence: This guy wins the Michael Jackson sound alike contest this time (are you guys going to send one each round?) So anyway, HORNS! Very fun song. There were a lot of very cool moments throughout.
Score: 8.5
bl5150: Angel Dust - Come Into Resistance: In your face from the beginning. I like the bouncy energy this song displays. Each time I play it, that pounding rhythm plus the awesome riffing gets stuck in my head. My only slight knock against it is that some of the background vocals sound a bit weak in the verses. Great song!
Score: 9.0
Scorpion: Psycrence - Moral Decay: Great opening makes me feel like am about to hear something epic. Really good mix of heaviness and progressive elements. Definitely scratches some of the right itches. Gets ever so slightly stale near the end before the outro, but overall very good song.
Score: 9.0
Elite: Epysode - Obsessions: Interesting mix of progressive metal with a singer that sounds like he's from an 80's hair metal band. The high energy is a big plus on this one. Ripping guitar solo!
Score: 9.0
Unfortunately someone must go home after this round. And by an ever so slim margin, we'll be saying farewell to LieLowTheWantedMan. Thanks for participating!
Rankings
bl5150 - 9.0 + 9.0 = 18.0
Elite - 8.5 + 9.0 = 17.5

Bolsters - 8.5 + 8.0 = 16.5
senecadawg2 - 8.0 + 8.5 = 16.5
Sacul - 8.0 + 8.0 = 16.0

Tom Bombadil - 7.5 + 8.0 = 15.5

Thank You Scientist <3
If I'm gonna be honest I consider Salesman one of the lesser songs on their album (8.5 is around what I'd give it too :lol ) so I really recommend checking out that entire album.
Also now I'm absolutely positive about something related to a different roulette, ahah :V
-
I take it these guys are somehow part of the video game world and this definitely has that epic video game feel to it even though it is a rock/metal version. Lots of heavy riffing makes for an ultimately very cool song. Gong!
The band was actually put together by the guy who wrote the music for the majority of the Final Fantasy games (Nobuo Uematsu), and he is one of the keyboard players in the band. I often recommend these guys to people that I know enjoy rock/metal even if they aren't Final Fantasy fans...usually to success. Glad you liked it. :tup
I'm sent for round 3.
-
This is going well :D
-
Still a good score even though it didn't catch your liking as much as the others. On to figuring out the next song to send!

Just got to up my game then!

yeah, very cool song. Am I crazy in thinking there was a serious Zeppelin vibe, especially in the first half of the song?

sorry I missed this earlier.
If done well I think they add a great deal to the music. My favorites are in the vein of Akerfeldt and Swano. I'm not much of a fan of black metal shrieking/growling.
Hopefully that makes sense.
-
Do you like experimental stuff?
I guess I would describe my tastes as more traditional, if that means anything. I guess it depends on what is being experimented with. :)
-
I will send a song tomorrow morning or late tonight. Heading over my friends house to see him and his family

you need to get your priorities in order :lol

I'm sorry, I haven't been online in a while. I'll send within the hour.

no worries. Got it.

So, when can we expect results? :)

currently targeting Thursday.

results tonight!
Very consistent round from a quality standpoint, but the genres sent were all over the board (relatively speaking). Made for interesting listening sessions.
-
I forgot what I sent! :lol
-
I have no idea either because I just pick up the links from the PMs without looking to see who sent what. I don't know who sent what song until I'm posting results.
-
Nice! That's how I run roulettes too, you can't get biased this way :)
-
yeah, my extreme dislike for kingshmegland doesn't affect his scores :lol

I should do that on my v2, but I think it's gonna be tough for me - having a good memory ain't always a good thing.

king, we'll always have TOP

Ouch, that doesn't sound good.
and yes, I love that damn album. Stole the songlist from the stage for my younger brother who i took!

don't worry, that comment had nothing to do with the standings

this must have been the unofficial female vocals round as 4 of the songs had females as either lead or prominent backing vocals. It was a weird round to listen to as each song was very different from the next. Sorry for some short notes on some of these, I guess the song either struck me or it didn't. And we have another elimination to take care of . . .
Sacul: Destiny Potato - Love Song: I can appreciate the heaviness, but the vocals are just not doing it for me, unfortunately.
Score: 6.0
kingshmegland: Enchant - Under Fire: Wait, I know that voice. The Spock's Beard/Affector guy. I like his voice, but the song never really goes to that awesome level. Favorite part was the instrumental build-up to the solo.
Score: 7.0
senecadawg2: Enslaved - Roots of the Mountain: Let's see, I mentioned I don't care for black metal shrieking and that's what someone sends. Just kidding, it was only right at the very beginning and a few other spots. It's kind of hard for me to get a handle on this song with so much going on - lots of different vocal styles, several changes in mood, etc. It's one of those I need to listen to A LOT to let it sink in. I can enjoy this but I need to be in the mood for it.
Score: 7.5
Tom Bombadil: The Count Basie Orchestra - Step Right Up: Love big band. This song had very much a Glenn Miller feel with that frantic sax-led theme with the brass providing the accents. That trumpet soloist has a great tone, nice and full. Very enjoyable tune.
Score: 7.5
Elite: Pagan's Mind - Into the Aftermath: I had to go with your second song as the first was just a bit over the threshold. I feel like I'm familiar enough with Jolly, just haven't gotten that second Audio Guide album yet. This song was heavy with some fast and intricate riffing just under the surface, awesome. But that screaming section puts me off just a bit. Overall I like what I've heard and will definitely check out more from them.
Score: 7.5
bl5150: Beautiful Sin - Take Me Home: High energy song, fun stuff. She has a great voice. Rather short song, but it didn't really feel like it for some reason.
Score: 8.0
Scorpion: Kamelot - Memento Mori: Big fan of that huge, slow guitar slide that ushers you from the soft intro to the heavier section. The driving choruses are my favorite parts. The galloping riffing for those choruses was a big plus. Very epic feel.
Score: 8.0
adace: Avatarium - Moonhorse: Some really interesting juxtaposition of extremely doomy sections with almost folky/medieval verses. Was more a fan of the heavy parts and the guitar solo rather than the early verses, although they were quite haunting. I did like the hard stop right before the guitar solo, very striking. In fact, that was my favorite part of the song from about 3:20 to 5:00 or so. Really cool song!
Score: 8.5
Bolsters: Primal Fear - When Death Comes Knocking: Very cool atmosphere created in the intro (that opening picked part on the guitar reminds me of Dream Theater, maybe On The Backs of Angels?) before the heavy guitars come in. I like that thick heavy sound from the bass/guitar combo. I appreciate the sitar mixed in as well. Overall the song has a raw energetic feel I really like.
Score: 8.5
Rankings after round 3
bl5150 - 9.0 + 9.0 + 8.0 = 26.0
Elite - 8.5 + 9.0 + 7.5 = 25.0
Bolsters - 8.5 + 8.0 + 8.5 = 25.0
senecadawg2 - 8.0 + 8.5 + 7.5 = 24.0
Scorpion - 7.0 + 9.0 + 8.0 = 24.0
kingshmegland - 9.0 + 7.5 + 7.0 = 23.5
Tom Bombadil - 7.5 + 8.0 + 7.5 = 23.0
adace - 7.0 + 7.0 + 8.5 = 22.5
Eliminated
LieLowTheWantedMan - 6.0 + 7.5 = 13.5
Sacul - 8.0 + 8.0 + 6.0 = 22.0
Sacul, thank you for participating, but it is now time for you to go. adace had a very strong song that saved him from elimination this time around but he'll have to do it again next round. Both bl5150 and Elite had tiny dips this round, allowing Bolsters to close the gap a bit.

Round 4 is dispatched.

after two more rounds we'll be down to a final 6, at which time I'll announce how the rest of the roulette will play out.

I felt a bit uncertain about the Enslaved track, so I'm relatively happy with the 7.5.

that song/band has a good bit of potential for me. Will just need to spend more time with it than I could for a roulette round. Definitely going on the 'bands to check out later' list.

just need songs from Elite, adace, king, and Scorp.

-
Sorry, as stated in my roulette I was away for the weekend. Will definitely send within the next few hours, that is, tonight.
-
no worries. Today is the first day I will have had a chance to listen to anything from this round.
-
this round, somebody has sent a song from a band that previously had a song submitted which scored an 8.0 or above. It is a different song from a completely different album.
Question for the remaining 8 participants, should I keep the song or ask for a different one?
-
It's up to you and I don't care much either way. But since you asked, I think you should ask for a different song.
-
You never said in the rules that it's not allowed to send songs by the same band again. However, it is obviously implied with roulettes that the aim is to send a different band/artist every round and that duplicates shouldn't be allowed. It's up to you, but I think you should send a different song. Otherwise, any participant can easily win just by repeatedly sending a well-scoring band which completely defeats the purpose of this game.
-
Sent.
I also agree with Elite and seneca, but at the end of the day it's very much your call.
-
If the song is really different from the previous one, up to the point they seem two different bands, I would keep it. But it's up to you anyways.
-
I think Evermind has a pretty good system..................if a song gets above 7.5 (I think) then the band is not allowed from there as it's an easy piggyback and sorta defeats the purpose. If it got a lesser mark and you want take your chances then fine.
-
Guys. Don't sweat it. It was me. I missed UM was already played. I sent another band all ready.
-
two of you were thinking along the same lines this round . . .
-
Round 4 is in the books. And another one bites the dust.
senecadawg2: Zelliack - Call Me Old Fashioned: Not much a fan of this type of vocal-led crooning I suppose. The guy sings just fine, but I'm not really feeling it without a bit more going on instrumentally. If this were in the midst of an album that had some really cooking songs on it and this were a bit of a showpiece for the vocalist I could maybe get into it, but as a stand alone song I'm not really digging it.
Score: 5.0
adace: The Oath - All Must Die: The thing I don't care for about some stoner and doom metal is the looser production, and unfortunately that kind of shines through here for me. The guitars are a little bit to loose if that makes any sense. Overall I could get into the doominess, but it just didn't have quite enough going for it. Doom is a genre I'm just exploring and I wouldn't say I really love it (yet). The Avatarium song was much more of what I like about the genre.
Score: 6.0
bl5150: Jimmy Barnes - Too Much Ain't Enough Love: Very good blues bordering on soul. But maybe juuuust on the soft for my tastes. Great solo, however. Something in the tone reminded me of David Gilmour.
Score: 7.5
Tom Bombadil: Soen - Delenda: I don't mind in the least when bands wear their influences on their sleeves. So even though this guy is a Tool sound alike, I think it's great.
Score: 7.5
Scorpion: Conception - A Million Gods: I wasn't sure about this at first, but it started to grow on me and I really liked it. When I saw Khan was the singer, I wasn't expecting it to be as rocking or prog or whatever as it was, I was thinking it was going to be more symphonic power metal.
Score: 7.5
Bolsters: Thunderstone - Forevermore: Power metal but with a bit of a classic/almost hair metal groove in places, I like it. I'm a fan of the attitude the song takes on during the verses, particularly the second half of each verse.
Score: 8.0
Elite: Soen - Pluton: This song seems a bit more ambitious than the song I received from their earlier album. Sometimes it works, sometimes it falls slightly flat, but I think I liked it just a little more than their other song. Going to have to seriously check out this band further.
Score: 8.0
kingshmegland: Big Wreck - Ghosts: Well, this is a very interesting song. Nice separation of the instruments. Love that bass during the bridge/solo. In fact the bass work in this song is pretty great throughout the entire thing, big plus for me. The vocals with the big harmonies and production remind me of Dave Matthews Band.
Score: 8.5
Rankings after round 4
bl5150 - 9.0 + 9.0 + 8.0 + 7.5 = 33.5
Elite - 8.5 + 9.0 + 7.5 + 8.0 = 33.0
Bolsters - 8.5 + 8.0 + 8.5 + 8.0 = 33.0
kingshmegland - 9.0 + 7.5 + 7.0 + 8.5 = 32.0
Scorpion - 7.0 + 9.0 + 8.0 + 7.5 = 31.5
Tom Bombadil - 7.5 + 8.0 + 7.5 + 7.5 = 30.5
senecadawg2 - 8.0 + 8.5 + 7.5 + 5.0 = 29.0

adace, thank you for participating, sorry to see you go. That Avatarium song was freaking amazing.
The top of the ranking is starting to get very bunched. And one more elimination is scheduled to happen after the next round! seneca took a gamble that didn't pay off this round - can he get back on the horse and come through with a huge score to stave off elimination? When I post the round 5 results, I'll let the final 6 know what is happening the rest of the way.
-
Wow- the worst song in the roulette. Bad dog!

When I saw on Last.fm that you were listening to a Jimmy Barnes song, I knew who and why. :lol
Round 5 has been sent.

Get to live another round. :tup

Dang, well it was fun playing. Hope to participate in your next one if you decide to have it.

Get to live another round. :tup
Their second album is better, Big Hath proves it :P

When I saw on Last.fm that you were listening to a Jimmy Barnes song, I knew who and why. :lol
and Jimmy would be offended that a Chicago fan (me too!) thinks he's soft :lol That was at the lighter end of his output in that era BH - perhaps check out Driving Wheels, Working Class Man , American Heartbeat etc....
I better up my game - my ratings are trending towards zero ;D

Here are the round 5 results. After this we will be down to the final 6!
Scorpion: Ark - Just A Little: Knowing Jorn was involved, I definitely was not expecting what I heard. This was almost Latin Jazz. Heck, it IS Latin Jazz. Very interesting. Is the rest of the album like this? I wouldn't say I was blown away, but I found it enjoyable. For THIS song, I think I actually preferred the other guy that seemed to do most of the singing instead of Jorn.
Score: 7.0
Bolsters: Edenbridge - The Invisible Force: Musically I was very fond of the big symphonic sound and thick guitars, but I wasn't all that crazy about the vocalist. It just didn't seem like a strong enough voice to compete with what was happening with the instruments.
Score: 7.0
Tom Bombadil: The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra - The Jody Grind: Nice little bossa nova after that screaming opening. Reminds me of Horace Silver. Then I look up a little more info on this song and what do you know, it's a Horace Silver tune. Makes sense! I like the “big band with the sound/style of a smaller jazz group” format, in a similar vein as the Mingus Big Band. The trumpet section is on fire in this performance.
Score: 7.5
Elite: Armed Cloud - Jealousy with a Halo: Whoa, nice thick/heavy sound! The vocal delivery and production remind me of System of a Down, although I wasn't crazy about his voice, especially on that little vocal melody in the chorus.
Score: 7.5
kingshmegland: I Mother Earth - Soft Bomb Salad: About halfway through the song I was not really feeling it, although I like the bass production. Wait there could be something awesome brewing, ok this is more like it. The intensity buildup was really well done and gets some extra points for the song, but ultimately I wish it had taken the song to a new level. However, it just seemed to peter out.
Score: 7.5
bl5150: Trail of Murder - Nightmares I Stole: Ah yes, this is a great riff right off the bat. That solo between the chorus and 2nd verse was quite tasty. Just a very solid song all around.
Score: 8.5
senecadawg2: Sound of Contact - Pale Blue Dot: Very good first impression. I liked the spacey intro (music, not video) and the thick rhythmic accents throughout the song. The dude sounds just like his father. When he sings that “I” with the echo it reminds a lot of Turn It On Again. I really like that epic sounding bridge.
Score: 9.0
As you can see below, we had a tie for the elimination spot. In my mind the first tiebreaker was whoever had sent the highest scoring song during the roulette. In this case senecadawg2 had sent two songs that scored higher than Tom Bombadil's highest (had they tied on this tiebreaker, the 2nd tiebreaker was going to be who scored the highest in this round, which was also senecadawg2). So there you have it. TB, it was a pleasure to have you play and thanks for sending some awesome music. The Umphrey's Mcgee was excellent and you have already lightened my wallet a bit!
Rankings after round 5
bl5150 - 9.0 + 9.0 + 8.0 + 7.5 + 8.5 = 42.0
Elite - 8.5 + 9.0 + 7.5 + 8.0 + 7.5 = 40.5
Bolsters - 8.5 + 8.0 + 8.5 + 8.0 + 7.0 = 40.0
kingshmegland - 9.0 + 7.5 + 7.0 + 8.5 + 7.5 = 39.5
Scorpion - 7.0 + 9.0 + 8.0 + 7.5 + 7.0 = 38.5
senecadawg2 - 8.0 + 8.5 + 7.5 + 5.0 + 9.0 = 38.0
Eliminated
LieLowTheWantedMan - 6.0 + 7.5 = 13.5
Sacul - 8.0 + 8.0 + 6.0 = 22.0
adace - 7.0 + 7.0 + 8.5 + 6.0 = 28.5
Tom Bombadil - 7.5 + 8.0 + 7.5 + 7.5 + 7.5 = 38.0

Pretty sure Jorn is the only guy singing on Just A Little.
-
so here is how the rest of this roulette will play out.
You keep your scores, and for the next two rounds you are playing for seeding, meaning that Rounds 6 and 7 will be just like before. But after those two rounds you will be seeded 1 through 6 based on your ranking after round 7.
That is because round 8 is going to be a one on one elimination round, in honor of March Madness. #1 vs #6, #2 vs #5, and #3 vs #4.
That will leave us with 3 participants for rounds 9 and 10, which will return to our normal scoring (with scores reset to 0) and reveal the ultimate winner. Got it? Sound like fun?
-
Pretty sure Jorn is the only guy singing on Just A Little.
well color me crazy. I know he has quite a range of styles and sounds, but he sounded completely different in some parts than others.
-
I should have sent Pale Blue Dot sooner. :getoffmylawn: Dimensionaut is such an underrated album on this forum, I never really understood why it didn't generate more buzz here. So, I'll be glad if there's another fan in the fold regardless. :tup
I agree with your comments on the singer in my song - I like Edenbridge but vocally there's just something lacking. Sabine isn't a bad vocalist by any means but as you said, she doesn't have a powerful voice and sometimes the songs need it, especially the heavier ones, and there's not a lot of variety to her singing. Still, the albums made since they started using a proper orchestra haven't been bad at all.
I'll send the next round later tonight, I might have to think a little harder about what to send given the new rules.
-
I'm surprised and relieved to still be in it... I really thought that the Zelliack song was going to prove fatal, but I'm glad to see you enjoyed the Sound of Contact song. I agree with Bolsters, it's a great album.
And cool idea for the last 5 rounds! I'll likely send tomorrow

I'm not sure I like where this is going . . .
Scorp sent Kylie Minogue in my roulette, it wasn't that bad.
I think it got 4.5 out of 10 though. :lol

I love the set u for the rest of the roulette!! Really fun idea!
-
Darn. At least you mostly liked the things I sent. Thanks for hosting a great roulette. And good luck to those other jabronis.
-
Big Hath, that song is very much an outlier on that album. The rest is progressive metal - very well done, but still, Just A Little is my favourite song for how unique it is.
Will think about what to think. Expect a song by tomorrow.
-
Hey Big Hath, how do you feel about classical music? Forgive me if the question has already been asked somewhere else and I missed it.
-
Hey Big Hath, how do you feel about classical music? Forgive me if the question has already been asked somewhere else and I missed it.
I would tread lightly in that genre. I seem to be very specific with what I find enjoyable and I don't even know if I could articulate what it is about the pieces I do like that makes them stand out. Hope that helps.
-
I will listen to some songs I'd like to send and send one out tonight or tomorrow morning. Going to see my brother's cover band tonight.
-
Will get something through tonight - have spent the weekend packing/flying home and arrived to find the usual shambles of mail and overdue this, overdue that etc..
If I can think of something good I might try and test the boundaries a little across the next 2 rounds, as my lead ain't really worth protecting now - sudden death against any of these guys doesn't fill me with joy :lol

That sounds promising for you seneca!
-
I was talking about the song he sent after the round he bombed in.
-
Round 6 results in da house!
Elite: Agent Fresco - Dark Water: The vocalist reminds me of Sieges Even's vocalist. The song was just ok I guess - I didn't get a lot of WOW moments. I didn't hate it, but overall it's just not quite a style that I'm crazy about.
Score: 7.0
Scorpion: Heart Of Cygnus - The Mountain King: I assume Rush is a big influence. Lots of 70s Rush vibes in this one. The section starting about 2:50 was well done. While I love the many facets of Rush's music, the softer side is probably my least favorite, and that's what this seems to cater to. The song does have a lot of redeeming qualities, just not something I would choose to rock out to, which is what I typically like doing. My guess is that this song will get better and better the more I listen to it. The band is definitely going on the "check out later" list.
Score: 7.5
senecadawg2: Byzantine - Ancestry of the Antichrist: The music = good to great. The screaming vocals = meh. The instrumental section was really, really cool. And I didn't really mind the vocals so much right after that when the guy was singing a bit. The bass played off the guitars very well.
Score: 8.0
bl5150: Masquerade - End Of Nothing: Great little riff after the intro! But the vocalist is throwing so much weirdness into the vocals/pronunciations I almost feel like I'm, listening to Tenacious D – especially right after the solo. HA! I like the guitar work. Short but sweet solo. If the vocals weren't quite so weird this would have been a contender for best of the round.
Score: 8.0
kingshmegland: Druckfaben - Dandelion: Wow! This is like Yes with a fusion edge. I like this! This is some chill out music for me. The early portions of the song reminded me of Dixie Dregs with that overdriven violin tone.
Score: 8.5
Bolsters: Burnclear - Haven: The guitar in the intro reminds me of Iron Maiden, similar tone as some of their 80s stuff maybe. I like this guy's voice as well. Definitely a fan of the energy and pounding riffs. First impression was really strong. Really great song!
Score: 9.0
Rankings after round 6
bl5150 - 9.0 + 9.0 + 8.0 + 7.5 + 8.5 + 8.0 = 50.0

kingshmegland - 9.0 + 7.5 + 7.0 + 8.5 + 7.5 + 8.5 = 48.0
Elite - 8.5 + 9.0 + 7.5 + 8.0 + 7.5 +7.0 = 47.5
Scorpion - 7.0 + 9.0 + 8.0 + 7.5 + 7.0 + 7.5= 46.0
senecadawg2 - 8.0 + 8.5 + 7.5 + 5.0 + 9.0 + 8.0 = 46.0

Tom Bombadil - 7.5 + 8.0 + 7.5 + 7.5 + 7.5 = 38.0
Already we have a bit of a shake up in the race for seeding. King and Bolsters both jumped over Elite, but I have a feeling the defending champ isn't about to give in just yet. Seneca has pulled even with Scorp. If they both have the same score next round, I'll have to figure out another tie breaker as they both would have had the same highest score and the same score for Round 7. May have to flip a coin if it comes to it . . .
-
Happy with an 8 - glad you liked it as I really had no idea what the reaction would be. I was prepared for a huge hit with that one . ;D Looks like I can venture further out of the comfort zone before sudden death hits .
I have the same reaction to the vocals too btw (only thing that grates a bit with me) - it's not like that throughout the album......just trying to sound "alternative" I suppose , which is in keeping with what was going on at the time.
-
Glad you liked Burnclear. :tup The band is currently recording their first album, and if the four songs they released onto Youtube are any indication, it'll be a good one.
Round 7 is on its way.
-
Cool. You can thank _floyd for that one
Also funny that the old king sent Druckfarben. I was considering sending them later in the roulette (which incidentally is why I asked about Yes earlier), but I suppose I don't have to make that decision now :D
I'll send tomorrow!

sorry for the delay. Family is in town. Results are likely tomorrow.

Round 7 results are now in the books. Kind of a hard round to judge as nothing was really bad, but nothing really killed it for me either.
Bolsters: Last Tribe - Sacrifice: Not completely sold on the vocals. But I loved that extended guitar solo. The rest of the song was solid but never really approaching awesome. The chorus melody got a bit repetitive. But as I said the solo alone got some major points.
Score: 7.5
senecadawg2: Sylvan - The Sound of Her World: I like the heavy/thick production. Unfortunately the vocals aren't really doing it for me. Too dreamy during the chorus, too understated during the verses. But I thought the buildup during the last third of the song was very cool.
Score: 7.5
kingshmegland: The Twenty Committee - How Wonderful: I like the uplifting nature of the song. Sounds kind of like a poppy progressive rock, sort of in the Flying Colors vein. Other than that, I kind of drifted in and out of the song while it was playing, so unfortunately nothing really grabbed me.
Score: 7.5
bl5150: Robby Valentine - Valentine's Overture (Part I): The build up in the intro and first sections of the song were effective. The vocal swell around 3:50 was cool – a few bars before the first guitar solo. Parts of the middle section really reminded me of Avantasia. I really like the energy of the song, but I will admit I kind of get lost with all the theatrics from time to time, especially from about the 7 minute mark and after.
Score: 8.0
Elite: Mechanical Poet - Old Year's Merry Funeral: This song is all over the place - lots of stuff going on in the song, but I like it for the most part. I'm not sure what is happening in the background vocals, but some of it sounds really weird! Similar to the Robby Valentine song, things get just a bit too theatrical/over the top at times.
Score: 8.0
Scorpion: Distorted Harmony - Kono Yume: Oh, yeah. I really dig that first heavy riff. The intro provided a great buildup to the heaviness. Sometimes I feel like that vocals aren't quite strong enough for the rest of the song – I don't know if it's the guy's voice or the melodies. In the end it was a very strong song that I enjoyed quite a bit.
Score: 8.5
Rankings after round 7
bl5150 - 9.0 + 9.0 + 8.0 + 7.5 + 8.5 + 8.0 + 8.0 = 58.0
Bolsters - 8.5 + 8.0 + 8.5 + 8.0 + 7.0 + 9.0 + 7.5 = 56.5
kingshmegland - 9.0 + 7.5 + 7.0 + 8.5 + 7.5 + 8.5 + 7.5 = 55.5
Elite - 8.5 + 9.0 + 7.5 + 8.0 + 7.5 +7.0 + 8.0 = 55.5
Scorpion - 7.0 + 9.0 + 8.0 + 7.5 + 7.0 + 7.5 + 8.5 = 54.5
senecadawg2 - 8.0 + 8.5 + 7.5 + 5.0 + 9.0 + 8.0 + 7.5 = 53.5

LieLowTheWantedMan - 6.0 + 7.5 = 13.5
Sacul - 8.0 + 8.0 + 6.0 = 22.0
adace - 7.0 + 7.0 + 8.5 + 6.0 = 28.5
Tom Bombadil - 7.5 + 8.0 + 7.5 + 7.5 + 7.5 = 38.0
So there you have it, after last round's shakeup in the standings, nothing really changed this time around other than Elite catching King for 3rd seed. But ultimately that doesn't matter since they are facing off against each other anyway. So here are the match-ups for the Round 8. The losers go home.
#1 bl5150 vs #6 senecadawg2
#2 Bolsters vs #5 Scorpion
#3 kingshmegland vs #4 Elite
There will be no scoring for this round. One song will be chosen as the winner from each pairing. Good luck!

Before I get to the results, let me just say that we will be saying goodbye to three forum members that have sent some AWESOME music in this roulette. And this in no way reflects on how I feel about them as individuals (the people that were eliminated prior to this round, well, that's a different story ;)).
Round 8 Results (higher seeded song is listed first)
Matchup #1
#1 bl5150 vs #6 senecadawg2 - The top seed vs one of the most successful roulette participants
Testament - Signs of Chaos/Electric Crown - Mysterious intro: check. Heavy, crunchy riffing: check. Virtuoso leads and pyrothechnic licks on top of the heavy rhythm: check. My one small knock is the relative weakness in the vocals which seem a bit limited in range.
Gordian Knot - Muttersprache - This song has a lot going for it. Very cool instrumental that takes you on quite a journey. I think my favorite part was the more jazzy slowed down section near the end before the short guitar solo.
This was veeeeeeery close, but bl5150 just barely eeks into the championship rounds.
Matchup #2
#2 Bolsters vs #5 Scorpion - The newcomer vs the returning contestant
Arcane - Keeping Stone: Sound on Fire - Oh yes, I loved that moment when the guitar rips in. Digging that section which moved right into another really cool riff under the second verse. Powerful delivery in the vocals as well here. Really cool stuff happening instrumentally and the vocalist is keeping up. Definitely one of the better songs this roulette. The last couple of minutes, especially the repeating riff during the outro, reminded me of Opeth. The rest of the album is like this??
Cat Empire - Fishies - Fun little song. Unfortunately it ran up against a juggernaut this round.
Bolsters wins by a fair margin.
Matchup #3
#3(3a) kingshmegland vs #4(3b) Elite - The king vs the reigning champ
Rocket Scientists - Earthbound - Awesome synth sounds! Love that build up but then the song kind of takes a right turn, would have liked a bit more exploration of that first theme maybe a bit heavier. Overall this really reminds me of Ice Age, maybe some Shadow Gallery with the vocal harmonies. Very cool prog rock. Great entry!
Pyramaze - The Bone Carver - This song was definitely enjoyable, and is probably a band I wouldn't mind checking out sometime, but there was really nothing about it that stood out from being kind of standard progressive/power metal.
Elite made a game of it, but kingshmegland is the winner.
So there it is. bl5150, Bolsters, and kingshmegland will battle it out for the next two rounds to determine the champion! Remember, scores are reset to 0.
-
AHHH! Oh well... :azn:
Good job bl5150!
I was planning on sending an Arcame song if I made it through.. Selfsame, more specifically. I'd highly recommend it, given that you liked Bolster's pick so much.
-
Cool ...........I had the same reservations BH (vocals) but the guitar is just so damn good I don't care. Having said that the vocals are near the top of the class for bay area thrash :P I actually have that Gordian Knot album somewhere seneca but haven't played it (or can't remember).........it must be good though as it's not my normal style and presumably I bought it for a reason :lol
I couldn't think of two nicer blokes to take on for the final two rounds - not at the moment anyway . And I'm a bit tipsy.

Round 9 results! The first of two championship rounds.
kingshmegland: Presto Ballet - One Tragedy At A Time: I really liked the section with the shimmering guitar chords at around the 10 min mark. It's a really good, well crafted song. But It's not quite scratching my itch. At times I feel like this may be a touch too psychedelic for me. I think the main thing is overall I feel like I've been around the block a time or two with this style of progressive rock, and unfortunately it felt slightly stale for me (relatively speaking of course, since I have to judge it against other songs).
Score: 7.5
bl5150: The Poodles - Before I Die: The Poodles? With a name like The Poodles, I wasn't quite sure how this was going to sound! Nice thick/heavy production on the guitars. I like the active keyboard/piano that drives the pace just underneath everything else during choruses. For the second time around with the song, it sounded a lot more “epic” which helps for longer term listening. Just picked up on those cool bass chords during the instrumental break between the solo and and last string of choruses. Cool song. High energy.
Score: 8.5
Bolsters: Circle of Illusion - New Age: It seems like I might have listened to a track or two from this album a while back when it was first mentioned here - but that was quite a while ago and I never got back to it for some reason. Great riff during the intro! Serious Flaming Row vibe when the vocals kick in. Quite a variety of styles crammed into one song. The ever-changing rhythmic patterns are really cool. Makes for a fun listen!
Score: 8.5
One more round to go! Cumulative high score for these two rounds determines the champ.
-
It's definitely the kind of album that requires several listens to begin appreciating. I wasn't impressed with it either at first, but eventually I warmed up to it and now it's one of my favourite releases from the last couple of years.

kingshmegland: Echolyn - The End Is Beautiful: I like the way the song switches between a dreamy feel and a more in your face full on Gentle Giant/Yes extravaganza. Strong vocal performance. I feel like the main chorus is the weakest part of the song, so the fact that it gets repeated a few times drags it down slightly for me.
Finals Score: 7.5 + 8.0 = 15.5
Bolsters: Shineback - Rise Up Forgotten, Return Destroyed: Pretty frantic opening, I really like the drum fills and rhythms at the start. The “save yourself” section started off a little weird, but by the end it redeemed itself. Very enjoyable song. Loved that transition at about 2:30.
Finals Score: 8.5 + 9.0 = 17.5
bl5150: Beyond Twilight - Ecstasy Arise: Strong opening statement – including that scream. They sure don't mind liberal usage of pinch harmonics do they? Thunderous rhythm section in this song. Pretty badass attitude and riffage throughout the song. And I like the use of pinging the sound back and forth in stereo – cool effect that can be overdone, but it serves the music well here. Knowing this is part of a larger story on the album makes me want to go out and buy the whole thing. Great song that is one of the better ones this roulette. Awesome vocals and killer music to match.
Finals Score: 8.5 + 9.5 = 18.0
So there you have it, bl5150 is the big wiener, I mean winner!
