The Zune is superior to the iPod. End of discussion

It was until it bricked. My Zune has given me more grief than any other piece of equipment I've ever owned.

The Zune is superior to the iPod. End of discussion
Would you like to explain why?
-
Most things are better than iPods. Unfortunately, Apple seem to be one of the only companies making reliable large-capacity portable media players without charging an absurd amount of money.
Which is why I'm waiting before I buy anything until someone else releases one!

I've used both and I <3 my Zune, though syncing it is a bitch.

I would really like a little more explanation than that.
I want to buy a portable media player with a large memory (I got 35 GB of music).

I just like the interface more than the iPod interface. I also like the fact that it has an FM tuner, games, and wifi.

I own the 80 GB Zune, and first of all, it was cheaper than the comparable iPod by about 50 bucks. Second, I don't know how your Zune is giving you grief Guitarded, but I've never had any problems at all with mine. It plays well, and syncing it isn't terrible. Using the Zune software is really easy. It has a wider screen, which is fantastic for video. I really need to upgrade to the 120 GB (I acquired TONS of bootlegs since I got this one).
I've used iPods before. iTunes, when I had first downloaded it, made duplicates of each of my music files, doubling the space taken up on my hard drive. As an Apple product, it kept giving me the option to get other Apple products, and every time I click no, it kept offering. So I sold the iPod and got a Creative Zen (which is awesome, but not as good as the Zune). Then the Zune was released, and I jumped on that.
My only complaint for the Zune is the lack of peripherals. Everything is "made for iPod". Damn you, Apple.
-
I had no problems with my 80GB Zune.
-
Same. Been loving it for over a year and a half. Never had much experience with an iPod but iTunes was enough to turn me off.
-
I use an iPod but once the Zune HD comes out I'm going to be very tempted to switch (if I ever stop using my mac, that is)
-
I have one of the original Zune 30's, and I have to say I am absolutely in love with all that Zune has to offer.
It can support many different audio types and ranges of quality, which is what makes it perfect for me.

Wait a sec, you imported a Zune?

I plan on getting a new mp3 player and thought I'd get a Zune since I don't want an iPod. Any suggestions for model?

About how much space do you need?
-
I've had one of each. Hated my iPod, love my Zune. I have no allegiances to Apple OR Microsoft, and am not a fan of either, but I figured one or both of them could put out a solid portable mp3 player. What follows is my own experience; I realize there are tens of millions of people who absolutely *love* their iPods.
iTunes is garbage, and I hate the damn circle thing you have to slide your thumb around. That may be the dumbest "innovation" in the history of mankind. My iPod's battery went to shit after less than a year, and I didn't bother replacing it. The sound would always randomly turn way up and down, scaring the shit out of me at times. :lol
My Zune has yet to cause me any real problems. I much prefer the interface of the Zune software, but I have found it to be just as buggy as iTunes.
The lack of decent Zune-compatible peripherals is a good point, however.

About how much space do you need?
I'm currently getting by on 30GB but I'm gonna want a decent upgrade from that. How many different types of Zune are there anyway? I should do some research, but I've been holding off until I actually start getting some real money.
-
I have a question: Everyone says iTunes is terrible, awful shitty, whatever. What exactly is wrong with it? I've used it on my Mac for 5 years and I have no problem with it. Is it a Windows thing?
-
I've used iTunes before and think it's fine. I very much prefer the Zune software and features, though.
-
Well, I have the 80 Gig, but that's been discontinued, though you can probably find it on ebay. The standard is now a 120 Gig. If you have a lot of video, this is the way to go. I'm not sure how much it is... Last time I was at Best Buy it was about 250 USD (not sure about where you live Demi). The other models are 16, 8, and 4 gig I believe. Personally, I recommend you try and find an 80 gig if you can. 120 seems excessive to me
-
I would recommend waiting for the HDs to come out, then see what capacity models they have.
-
Oh, those aren't out yet? I remember hearing about those a while back and being interested. Yeah, I'll definitely wait to see what those are like for sure.
-
They'll probably be far more expensive... and personally, I don't see a need for portable HD.
So I'll keep using my current Zune until it dies (or I amass much more music) :)
-
Well I had an original Zune30gb, but last month it got this error that made it useless (sittin on my dresser;dead). So instead of paying over $100 to repair it, I upgraded to the 120gb 2nd generation one (bought off ebay for $230) and im loving it!
-
I had no problems with my 80GB Zune.
Wait a sec, you imported a Zune?
I just bought it off Ebay (UK). There is also various sites that let you buy Zune stuff in the UK.
If you want to sign up for Zune Social, just make a fake account Hotmail account where it says you live in America and either get an American to sign up for you (since Zune's signup page blocks all IPs outside of Amerca) or find an American proxy server to use.
-
I have a Zune 120GB, and I wouldn't think of switching to any other player.
It has a ton of storage, it has great sound quality, the Zune software provides a very nice organizational setup for my music library, and the screen is fantastic for videos, and even the album art. It's been a very reliable player so far as well, having had it for nearly a year.
-
My iPod 80 GB has worked great for over 2.5 years. I'm content. I only need it for listening to music, and maybe watching a movie on a road trip, so im perfectly fine with not having any weird bells and whistles.
-
I had an iPod for about 2.5 years, and I barely used it. Once I started using it more frequently, the screen just went out and the sound got bad. It just sucked. Also, iTunes in general is such a stupid music player. I can't pinpoint why, but I hated it, and it was slow as well.
At the request of Lasers, I bought an 8GB Zune. It is sooooooo much better. I got it last year, and I have used it a ton at the gym, college, and walking around my neighborhood. It's easy to navigate in both touch and onscreen navigation, and the Zune software is great.
My only two complaints, as already mentioned:
1. Syncing can be (but is not always) a pain. That may be the only thing that makes iTunes preferable.
2. The lack of Zune-related peripheral devices. I would love a hook up for my car or a stereo that can play it.
-
The lack of Zune-related peripheral devices. I would love a hook up for my car or a stereo that can play it.
This. Though it's true that I can still hook it into my car's sound system with an adapter that hooks into the headphone jack, it would be nice to have something I could use to hook it in through the USB. Having it charge while driving and having slightly higher sound quality would be nice.
-
I have an original 30 GB. I like it a lot. Syncing is a bitch indeed, and the software is bland and useless compared to most, but the device itself is a God, which is really all that matters anyway.
Social: Prog&Moog
(Though to be fair, I'm not sure what the point of the social is, as I've never used it)
-
whats the complaints against iTunes? i've never really had problems with it.
-
It's a clunky, bloated RAM hog. Plus it forces you to install Quicktime for some reason I have yet to figure out in order to use it.

You can look at friends music, and others who have similar tastes. It's like getting suggestions without actually talking to people. And you can share tracks temporarily, but I think you have to be in close proximity to another Zune
And I'm looking for you on the Social but can't seem to find your tag

I think Apple did this deliberately, mac version is very fast and reliable (and I don't even have a mac, I run leopard on a pc).
-
Well guys, at least we know we'll be getting a software update next month! Hopefully the lyrics function that has long been requested will come up. I think they would have done it a long time ago if they hadn't been working to develop software and functions for the Zune HD.

I own one of these originally priced at $179 ( Got it for $49.00 when Circuit City went belly up)
I have no issues with it...
OMG its only 8GB well its holds well over 500 songs and that's way more than what i need to get and forth too work...when I get tired of some songs I just swap them out
-
Yea I used to have a small one.. but when it came time to decide what should go when I got new music, it became increasingly harder to choose, and so I decided to get a large capacity MP3. The zune was just released, so I got the 30. Then that was stolen from me, so I got the 80. A lot of times I'll just put certain artists on Shuffle, and occasionally I'll shuffle all. It's strange what might come up... I once had Opeth come on, and then after that was some Django Reinhardt. That's a weird combination :lol

You keep your Sony garbage nonsense out of this holy place! in case you haven't learned my humor by now, j/k
Speaking of Zune, who else loves it when the software does this?

I've got the ol' 30GB Zune, and it runs with finesse. Even though editing song info can be really freakin' annoying, I love it. :heart :heart :heart

This thread has me really missing my Zune. I should send it in. :(

HD now with specifications and pre order!!!!
Pre order prices:
16 GB: $219.99
32 GB: $289.99
Which will obviously go down when released.
-
While I'd love to get this I think I'll wait until at least a 64 GB version is released.
-

Yeah. I have about 50 GB on my 80 right now. I don't want to have to choose what to keep
-
Looks cool, but I don't think any of those features are really that great. Maybe for other people, but eh. I've only got like 10 gigs on my 120 so I think I'll be fine for a while, hehe.
-
Wait, I forgot how pre ordering stuff that's not music works. Does it get more expensive or less expensive after it's released?
I asked a friend today and he told me that gadgets are usually more expensive after they're released.
-
I went ahead and reserved the Zune HD today at Best Buy on my way back from college. I can't wait to have it in my hands.
On the drive home I realized that I had just reserved something that maybe 8 other people will buy on release day. :lol
-
Just got this email:
Dear Twilight Sonata,
As we work to bring you the next level of Zune entertainment, we want to inform you the Zune service will be down starting at 11:00 am (PDT) September 14th until the early hours of September 15th. During this time you will not be able to sign into Zune.net, Zune forums, or Zune Marketplace. We're sorry for this inconvenience, but come back to www.zune.net on September 15th and get ready to experience a whole new world of Zune.
Sincerely,
Your Friends at Zune
I hope this is something worthwhile
-
Well, it's the same as the release day for the Zune HD. Which pretty much guarantees a new software. We're looking at Zune 4.0 here.
-
The Zune is worth having for the Zune pass alone. Unlimited music, how could you pass that up. I have an ipod as well, had it before the zune, I pretty much just use it for running now, I find it more sweat resistent than the zune and I use the Nike+ with the ipod.

Tuesday can't get here soon enough!
-
Have any of you guys checked the zune.net homepage? I think what is shown in the laptop image is a sneak peek of the Zune 4.0 software :caffeine:
.....so probably Zunes and Zune software will be updated to the 4.0 interface in the wee hours of the morning.
-
Updating now :D
-
Smart DJ is what I've always wanted, and it's awesome.
-
I'm updating now as well. And tomorrow when I get my Zune HD I'll just be able to blow my Zune load all over the place.
-
I keep thinking the thread title is "Zune Users Come Hitler!"
On topic: I really want a fucking Zune, but I can't get one until MS releases software for OS X.
-
I never really looked at Zunes, been thinking about a touch lately. I have never owned an ipod, I have been a creative zen fan for years now. That Zune HD looks pretty slick though, I'm really considering one.
-

I'll be picking mine up tomorrow, so if you have any questions about one I'll gladly answer them after I figure the thing out.
-
I would totally get the Zune HD if it had more storage...
-
I'd give it about 6 months before they come out with a 64 GB version.
I'm getting the 32 GB model because my CD collection isn't that big and I'm only using about 12 gigs at the moment. And that's 70 albums at 320 kb/s.
-
Yay! I got my 30gb zune working again! I was stuck using a damn 8gb for a while because my 30gb was messed up, finally got around to looking on Zunes website. I had to completely clear the memory and redo EVERYTHING. But it was well worth it.

Plus can anyone tell me why I need to download Quicktime as well in order to run iTunes? I can see not downloading it and disabling the video portion until you do but there is no reason for it to force you to download it. I have never seen a worse combo of programs (iTunes/QT) in terms of the extra updating baggage it comes with that bogs down computers without fail.

Quicktime is the worst media player I have ever used. It makes my computer slow as fuck during startup and auto updates itself every 6 hours... I hate it. I'm all about the VLC media player.

My friend just got the Zune HD, and I must say, their quite sexy :-*

There is also news that Microsoft will be steadily building up its Zune apps store. In the next few months Zune will have apps for Facebook, Twitter, etc. Those will be free, as most of them will be, I believe.
It may not kick iPods ass in sales, but in features and functionality I can see it doing more than holding its own once Microsoft adjusts to the coolness of the apps pool.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure.
And they're also halting production on all other Zunes beside the HD.

My software is no longer recognizing my Zune.
WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY?
-
According to my mom, verizon is talking to microsoft about making a Zune version of the iPhone. If I can find a link I will post it.
-
I believe the Zune version of the phone is the "Pink", correct?
-
I don't know wich is better but i have had both pod and zune and the last time i wanted to upgrade the zune i found out the took out the eq It makes a big differance with good headphone's
Someone needs to make one with a non preset EQ and that will be FTW
-
They have equalizers now. Actually, they've been there for a while.

I have the Halo 3 Limited Edition 30 GB ZUNE, I got it on the very first day running to the nearest game stop to buy one and to my surprise I was the first and only one to buy it that whole month and maybe more after that, so far I haven't seen anybody else with it.
-
It's frustrating that they're going to be more or less halting production on all models except for the ZuneHD. The entire reason I bought a Zune was that I wanted a high capacity MP3 player. I really don't see why they couldn't keep the Zune120 around as well. I tend to have all my music files in relatively high quality, and as such, have quite a bit more than 32GB worth of stuff on my current Zune.
Also, I actually prefer the touchpad to a touchscreen, since I don't want fingerprints all over my screen protector.
-
I think I'm going to get the Zune HD 32. I have about 70 gigs of music, but I only listen to about 20/30 of those regularly. So I figure I would just switch things out as they become stale
-
I'm keeping my classic 30GB that I have named "Brick".
It's big, but i love the damn thing.
-
I love mine too, but it's got a huge crack in the screen that I'm actually surprised hasn't completely broken yet.
Plus, apps/internet
Yes
-
I never understood how old Zunes/Creative Zen Jukeboxes were considered bricks. How small are your pockets, people?
-
I never understood how old Zunes/Creative Zen Jukeboxes were considered bricks. How small are your pockets, people?
I prefer to have something slightly larger. I like the size of my Creative Zen, it doesn't feel as though I can break it in half, or smash from a short fall.

Mine fits well in my pocket, and seeing as I use DJ headphones, I'm definately a "the bigget the better" person.
-
I had to use a Zune for like a month earlier this year, I think it blows a varity of donkey organs.
-
Sometimes, metty, maybe you just need to wake up, look in the mirror and realize that it's just you.
-
Not selling Zunes in the UK is massive fail. I wanted one when my iPod broke, but I had to go out and buy a 120 iPod instead. Had no problems with it so far but the audio quality isn't amazing (iPod earphones? you might as well rustle paper by your ear).
Oh, and iTunes itself isn't so bad. After you customise the EQ and sort the 'Smart Playlists' out, it's kinda cool. Needing to install Safari and Quicktime every 5 minutes is annoying as hell though.
-

I love my Zunes, I originally bought the 80 gig then bought the 120 when i sent the 80 in for repair (i dropped it and broke the glass, ended up having to replace it myself... had to gut it to get to it..lol.. but it still works :) ), also got a 4gig cuz it was cheap and it was referbed (display model). I recently bought the Zune HD... and I love it.
-
So, I am thinking about getting the Zune Pass again. I had it last year and it was awesome, I only stopped it to save some money and explore the music I already have. I think now, though, I want it again. Do any of you have the Zune Pass and like it?
-
I'm more of a CD collector guy, so I never really had interest in getting a Zune Pass. But it's highly regarded as the best deal for music out there from everything I've read.

When you cancel your subscription all your music goes byebye, right?
-
Not the tracks you get to keep. You keep 10 tracks every month, and I don't think that goes away. But if you stop using the pass then all the zunepass music you have in your collection and on your zune goes away.
-
Yeah, keep 10 tracks a month. That's really awesome, because it can be like just buying an album every month while being able to get an insane amount of music along with it.
I bought it tonight, downloaded Snowfall on Judgment Day to listen to it. I love Zune.

Tired of my old Zune so I ordered the new sexy HD one. Can't wait.
-
It is pretty nifty.
Unfortunately, the "apps and games" that Microsoft advertised for it are pretty much nonexistent. That doesn't make it any worse of an mp3 player, but it has been made pretty clear that all the app development is going toward the Windows Phone 7, which is not compatible with the HD.
-
How much does a Zune cost? I dropped my iPod in the toilet the other day and it had a short. I need a replacement musical device.
-
Anyone manage to find a good cheap way to hook a Zune up to a car? I'm not spending $75 on the FM adapter.

I paid about $270 for my 32 gig version, but the prices have come down since then.
Anyone manage to find a good cheap way to hook a Zune up to a car? I'm not spending $75 on the FM adapter.
I got the FM adapter for Christmas, and honestly, don't bother with any of that stuff. No matter what you do, there will ALWAYS be some amount of radio interference and fuzz. I tried using it out in vast stretches of nothing on long drives and the simple fact is that it's just a shit idea. Your best bet is to get a car stereo with a 1/8" jack for mp3 players. It's not cheap, but at least you wold get something worthwhile that would bring p the value of your car as well.

Is Windows Phone 7 going to have Zune software on it?

That sucks. But I hear there's an MSN messenger app, which is really all I'll need :P
-

Yeah, the phone interface is pretty much exactly the same as the Zune HD interface, and the media is all zune software.
-
Godamn this thing is so sexy. The display they use for the music is incredible. I don't really mind about the apps because I have a phone, and most apps are pretty dumb.
And the sound quality, OH MY GOD!
-
I have made love to my Zune HD countless times. I'm amazed it still works, actually.

That's why Zunes are so awesome, when people don't understand why people love them, it's because they don't understand that people love them.

The Zune is superior to the iPod. End of discussion
Ehhh vale.
https://mashable.com/2011/03/14/rip-zune-player-2006-2011/
Microsoft is not planning on releasing any further Zune devices. Instead, the company plans to focus on Zune software for smartphones.
Microsoft declined to comment on the future of the Zune players, but in a statement to Bloomberg noted that it remains “committed to supporting our devices in North America.”
Zune launched in November 2006 to much fanfare and hopes that it could beat Apple’s iPod. But sales never came close to reaching the levels of Apple’s best-selling and market changing music and media player.
In 2009, Microsoft decided to separate the Zune team into software and hardware divisions, and attempted to get developers to target the platform. It hasn’t really worked. Zune Marketplace support for the Xbox 360 aside, the Zune brand still has limited appeal outside of North America.
According to Bloomberg, Microsoft will continue to put its Zune features into Windows Phone 7 and in the Zune desktop software for Windows. Microsoft’s Zune Pass remains an economical way to stream and have access to a large array of music, but the fact that it only runs on Windows devices ruins its potential as a true iTunes competitor.
The Zune was never a bad MP3 player. The failure was that the product never managed to differentiate itself as being better or cheaper than the iPod. If anything, the Windows-only requirement made the device more limited.
For that reason, we don’t imagine many users will shed any tears over Zune’s passing.

Yeah,, the Zune is definitely a waaaay better device than the iPod as an mp3 player, but as far as other features go the iPod always had it beat. The Zune could have had the same features, but Microsoft never really pushed anything and it seems like they've wanted it to die from the beginning.
Whelp.

I love Zune, but I went through 3 in a row that bricked for no reason at all. It would work for a while, then go to that annoying error which usually means hardware failure.
Switched to a Cowon S2, and Im very very happy with it.

I am a proud Zune owner. I am still rockin' one of the original First Gen 30 gb Zune players and it still works great! I use it all the time with my Xbox 360 as additional hard drive space where I keep music, videos and photos so I can use my Xbox hard drive exclusively for gaming material.

The Zune is superior to the iPod. End of discussion
Typical garbage tech journalism
And a wild counter-post appears!:

Well the Classic Ipod is most likely dead so the Zune dying doesn't surprise me.
-
I think I'm going to get a 64GB Zune HD when I can afford it. I love my Creative Zen (the sound quality is really good) but the user interface makes me want to drown children every time I use it.

Zune definitely has the best user interface.

Indeed. One of the favourite things about my phone.

What? Why or how is it dead?

The rumors are that they will stop making new models as they haven't really been updating them much in the last few years. Since the best ipod they make is already in the Iphone and Ipad and they sell the ipod touch... doesn't seem to be a real need for it anymore. Apparently they were being out sold by the Ipod touch by a lot.

Guardian posts a retrospective piece about the original iPod and points out that the Classic iPod design has not been updated since late 2009.
The iPod Classic, as the famous scroll-wheel design is now known, hasn't been updated now since September 2009, with a modest capacity jump from 120GB to 160GB. On the Apple Online Store, shipping times have slipped from 24 hours to 1-3 days. Across the US, several major retailers have reported short supplies, leading to speculation the device may soon be discontinued. It didn't even warrant a mention at Apple's annual Developers Conference in 2010. "The iPod's essentially finished, give or take," says Dr Alice Enders, a former senior economist at the World Trade Organisation who now reports on global music markets for media consultancy Enders Analysis.
The iPod was originally launched in 2001 and laid the groundwork for Apple's resurgence this past decade. The article gives a nice lookback at the iPod.

Pity, it was the only iPod I was ever vaguely tempted to buy. At least until they locked the firmware down.

That's a shame. Sadly, I guess I'm not surprised. I bought my 160gb iPod Classic just a few months ago, and I had to go to five stores before I was able to actually find one. I wanted a traditional iPod, not a touchscreen one.
