Well 2 of my top 10 are already gone in Animals and Foxtrot. :lol
Will follow

Following :hat
-
Will follow for sure ;D
Also, man, you can write :tup
-
There's some top classic albums in there. Interested in seeing what makes the cut, so following.
-
Some excellent HMs!
-
sounds like it will be an interesting list! following.

Rust In Peace man :metal :metal :metal
Always wanted to check out some ELP, maybe it's finally time. Solid first update :tup
-
Always nice to see some ELP in Top 50, good pick here.
49. Trout Mask Replica – Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band (1969)
So yeah, this is definitely one of the weirder entries in my list.
Yeah, I mean, just look at this cover. :lol

It's probably with weirdest album I've ever heard. Like, it almost seems as just pure improvisation and playing with the instruments. Or it might actually be that :lol .

In some songs, that's exactly what it is. ;)
In terms of "weirdness", there might only be one other album on my list that beats this one out.
Love all three of those. :heart

Ok, I'm following now. Any list that include THE is worthy of following. Never did get into Gentle Giant, but Fragile is of course from the best year that ever made rock music (awaits Kev and Jaq argument for 1976).
-
Two great releases and I've never heard Octopus, I'll probably check this one when I have time.
-
:hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy
I'm curious about Gentle Giant. I need to check them out sometimes.
-
Another great 3. Gentle Giant is really amazing and Free Hand was very close to making mine. Yes had a few albums I'd consider close.

-
Not a fan of Metallica ;D . But that GYBE! album is bloody good - even in the calm sections there's always something interesting going on. With Laughing Stock pendent, it's time to give it a listen.
-
Although that is not my favorite Godspeed or Talk Talk record,I love those two records. :tup
-
Master :tup - I haven't heard the rest of the stuff, but the post-rock album sounds interasing!

Definitely do give them a listen. Well worth it. :tup

That Mono record has such a unique beauty. Haven't listened to Ashes Against the Grain in while. And the electronic album seems interesting :coolio .
-
Some might scoff at the idea of an album being almost entirely made of samples, and some might condemn it as uncreative.
Ironic that Since I Left You, while made of samples, is the total opposite of being uncreative :tup
-
Frontier Psychiatrist is one of the most awesome songs in the history of ever. Whole album is great.

Zeppelin IV is far too low. The remaster (just got it last week) is really nice, cleans up a handful of things, and makes the album fresh again (not like it went stale or anything), but it's like the difference of a 1971 Corvette, and a 2014 Corvette Stingray. Love it.

I haven't gotten myself the remaster yet, but I love what they did with the prior three so I'll definitely get to it soon. :tup
-
Late for the party, but those are some amazing updates. Kudos especially for AATG, RIP and HTTIW. I was never a fan of Captain Beefheart though, and that album is just a mess, but I'm looking forward to future updates nevertheless.
-
Aside from Master of Puppets and Led Zeppelin IV I love everything so far. :tup

The I heard Spiderland was the first post-rock album, I didn't expect it to be that... weird. I don't even know how it is even related to post-rock.

The I heard Spiderland was the first post-rock album, I didn't expect it to be that... weird. I don't even know how it is even related to post-rock.
Post-rock refers to less of a particular style of sound and more of a style of method. For example, both Spiderland and Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden are considered some of the first post-rock albums out there, yet stylistically they sound as if they belong on the opposite ends of a pole--the first coming more out of post-hardcore and the latter coming more out of new wave and jazz. Post-rock mainly refers to using rock instruments for "non rock" purposes. I'm no guru in the genre, so there's definitely people out there with more knowledge than myself about it all, but it would certainly fit the criteria if we're considering post-rock a genre by itself.

Interesting, but isn't that the point of Noise rock?

I'm even less of an authority on noise rock. :lol
Apologies for the inactivity in this thread. I should have another update coming pretty soon.

Not really. Noise rock is still pretty clearly defined rock, while post-rock seems to blur the lines quite often.

Leaves Turn Inside You is one of the most indescribable albums out there. It's amazing, but I can never properly articulate why. It just is. Great stuff. :heart
-
Mercy Falls :tup Yeah, those spoken parts are incredibly bad.

Mercy Falls :tup Yeah, those spoken parts are incredibly bad.
No kidding. "and are nowhere near bad enough to ruin the experience as a whole."... but they sure do try. :lol

still can't get over the fact that after recording them, someone listened to the lines and thought "yep, now THAT is what we were going for. Awesome stuff!"

No mention of Skinny Love on your For Emma Forever Ago? :tdwn
But still, wonderful albums (although I don't care for Transatlantic.)

No mention of Skinny Love on your For Emma Forever Ago? :tdwn
If I covered every single song on these albums in each of my write-ups, they'd end up three times as long. :lol But I do have a lot of love for Skinny Love. It's a fantastic song and probably did deserve a spot on my "Favorite Tracks" there.
-
3 albums and bands I still have to check.
-
"Tunnels", the best song of the noughties :hefdaddy
-
Right on with Funeral. As a guy who thinks Neon Bible is pretty great but nothing overly special, and that Suburbs and Reflektor are boring, Funeral is still amazing and has a special place in my heart. That album brings a weird sense of nostalgia and wonder-like emotion like so few albums do.

If “Arcarsenal” isn’t one of the most jaw-dropping openers to any album ever, then stop me now.
Damn straight. :hefdaddy My mom got me into AtDI a long time ago before I even knew who The Mars Volta were. Amazing music.
Never been much of a Sabbath fan. Faust is :tup :tup

I recall listening to Paranoid ofr the first time some weeks ago and it was anything but metal :lol . Like I&W, Pink Floyd it's an essential band for any top 50 list in DTF. What they did with DSotM is truly timeless. Each time I listen to it, I can't believe it was done recorded than 40 years ago.
-
I recall listening to Paranoid ofr the first time some weeks ago and it was anything but metal :lol .
You must have a pretty skewed idea of what metal is then. :lol
-
To be fair, I listened to their debut, Master of Reality, Paranoid and the one with angels on one run, so I might be talking about the wrong album :lol .
-
To be fair, I listened to their debut, Master of Reality, Paranoid and the one with angels on one run, so I might be talking about the wrong album :lol .
Might you be referring to their debut? With the exception of the title track, most of the songs on there are pretty bluesy. Not to say it isn't still metal, but I could see why someone more accustomed to more extreme forms of metal would think otherwise.
Keep in mind that they were the pioneers. Listening to their debut is listening to the birth of a genre.
-
great choice with Rush!!
-
American Football! :heart :heart :heart :heart Such a beautiful album.

Yeah, I think it was that - it reminded me a bit of King Crimson. But well, modern prog is little like ItCotKC, so I get your point.

Terria is a rough 20 places low, but still awesome to see it appear. Love that album.
-
Meh, Terria is ok. Never got the praise it receives, since Devin has far better albums. Maybe it's time it give it another listen, just to see if it click on me.
-
Catching up on this list. There is a lot of music I haven't heard and I'm looking forward to checking out.
-
College essays suck.
You think writing ONE sucks? Try grading an entire class worths of them :)

O:M is one hell of a ride and one hell of an album!

O:M is one hell of a ride and one hell of an album!
Indeed. It blows me away how each song is damn catchy, and different from each other. Amazing.
I still have to get fully into Sigur Ros (someone please make a discography thread), and knew ( ) and loved it enough to put it in my top 50. But there are no words no express how much my mind was blown when I first listened to Ágćtis byrjun. It was more beautiful and warmer than the other. Wonderful :heart .

Late to the party but I can say I've enjoyed at least one album of every update, kudos kudos. Great list so far :tup.
-
Indeed, this is a great list so far. I&W and Powerslave are both stellar :metal

.
-
I'm waiting for Zappa Discography thread to check out something from him, but I'll keep this one in mind.

To like Swans is to be masochistic, to digest such a long and complex album.

To like Swans is to be masochistic, to digest such a long and complex album.
I honestly don't think it can be possible to do in one sitting. :lol I feel as if they were aware of this, thus why there are highlights and longer, post-rock tracks dotted throughout rather than concentrated in one part of the album. I also feel that that this is why both discs are more or less equal to me.
-
.
-
Fuck yeah, Colors. The opening of the album never fails to suck me in to listening to the whole thing.
-
Tyrias got me into Brand New with Limousine - dat crescendo and solo dude, epic as fuck. Still have to give it more spins, but what I've heard so far is great. And although it can be an overwhelming listen, Colours is amazing, full of win :heart.

Great Opeth álbum. Still have to give The Mars Volta a listen though.
-
Yes, both albums are amazing, De-Loused is one of my favorite records. And I love the lyrics too, though I admit to not having a clue what the fuck they mean. :lol

Definitely give TMV a listen. Can't go wrong with either of their first two. De-Loused just happens to be my favorite. Very unique take on more modern prog.

Same here. :lol. It could seem at times that Cedric is just spitting nonsense, but I'd honestly prefer it that way than something too straight-forward or less eclectic. I still feel it perfectly compliments their style.
-
Flawless update.
As eclectic as these songs are, they retain a very strong sense of catchiness.
I totally agree, and I think that's the reason my interest in TMV wanes after De-Loused. This is the album where their jamming and stuff sorta plays second fiddle to the actual songs, and that role is completely reversed the further into their career you go. I find at least. France The Mute gets a lot of praise but for me the lack of actual songs is what fucks it for me.
-
Eclectic yet catchy? Me interested.

Amazing album. :heart :heart
I also find it amusing how cheerful Dan seems outside of Have a Nice Life, with his business (https://twofriendlynerds.com/) and all. Quite a contrast. :lol
-
Wow. I'm ashamed to say I've never heard or even heard of this album, though the way you describe makes me want to listen to it. So I'm going to do that. Fantastic writing, Guy.
EDIT: listening now, really enjoying it so far! Its beautiful. Although your title should say "Arrowheads (x75)" :lol

Definitely. :lol Though I honestly find it quite inspiring. He was clearly in a very dark place when he wrote this album, yet he was able to battle his demons. I've got nothing but love for the man.

No shame in that. :tup It's an overlooked gem in my opinion. And as long as I can get at least one person to give it a chance, I've done my part.
-
Still have to check this out :tup .
-
.
-
Another album I really should check. I like what I've heard of shoegaze/dream pop - don't know why I haven't deepened more into it yet.
-
I'm curious if you plan to finish this :P .
-
Funny enough, I feel like I've listened to enough music since I began this list however many months ago that I feel I could probably re-do it, but none of my top ten has changed since I originally conceptualized it, so I'll simply continue this one.
I will finish it one day. :lol My write-ups for the top ten are freaking monsters to write, and I don't have all of the time in the world anymore, which is why I just decided to put it on hold and let other people go through with their lists while I try and complete mine--I felt kinda hoggish for stalling people up who probably already had their write-ups complete and ready to go.
The tl;dr version: Yes. :P
-
hate to ask after 5 months, but is this still happening?
-
That's a completely reasonable question. :lol
Been musing about that recently. A bit of my top few picks has since changed, but I'll find a compromise. I'll continue this list, and get started on writing the next write-up soon. Give me a couple days most, this is happening. :hat
