Time to start the fun. As I mentioned in the preliminary thread this will be an elimination roulette that will work like this: First round will be matches between participants that were randomly generate by a website (blame the internet for your match up, not me). Since we have an odd number of participants one of the groups will have 3 participants, again that group was chosen randomly by a dice (blame the dice). In case we get a last minute participant one of the members of that group will be matched up against the late runner.
You each have to send me a song that will go against the one your match up sends. The one I like best moves on, the other one gets eliminated. In the 3 person group, 2 people will move on if we don't get a late runner.
After that the remaining participants will go in a classic roulette death match. I will score songs from 1 to 10 and the lowest score each round will get eliminated. If 2 players are tied for the lowest score I'll decide who lives and who dies because this is my roulette and I am god.....
The last 2 participants will have a final match up in which they'll have to send a whole album.
All the rounds will be open so people don't start complaining about how music is not supposed to be happy and all that (you know who you are)
Here's the link to a rate your music list which has most of the bands I like. The list is not complete so you might have your song rejected even if it's not there. https://rateyourmusic.com/list/nekov/bands_i_like/ (https://rateyourmusic.com/list/nekov/bands_i_like/)
You can send grooveshark links, youtube links, other website (not spotify) links. In case none of those serve you ask for my email and send me an mp3.
Matchups for the first round

Seneca - vs - Lonestar
Sacul - vs - J.boy
Dr. DTVT - vs - Xenon

Nope, I'm already familiar with Camel.

Looking forward to the results!
-
Well, first we need that final oaf to submit.
-
He hasn't been in here for a couple of days so I wouldn't hold my breath. I'll probably write everything up tonight when I get home so it won't take long after he submits.
-
Wow. You're fast :omg:
I would love to be banned.
:lol
-
Dude, why aren't you participating in this roulette?
-
I'm not a Roulette guy. Too much stress! :lol
I have only participated in 3 and the only reason I did was because I was invited. And honored to be.
I did sign up for the Doc's upcoming Roulette. I guess I couldn't pass up a chance to be an official member of Team Fogey. :lol
If you have another one, give me a nudge.

Yeah, I'm missing one player. Please join the fun

TAC, get off your rocking chair and get in here now.

Sorry, got distracted with the game that no one cares about. Couldn't we have played like this in the final? >:( >:( >:(

Lucien - Dmitri Shostakovich - Symphony 5, Finale
I don’t listen to a lot of classical music but normally i find it enjoyable. This was the case, nice and epic tune that travels through several different moods, good instrumentation and good transitions.
Lolzeez - Built to Spill - I would hurt a fly
Well this song is…...depressing as fuck really and while I do sometimes enjoy the somber mood I really couldn’t listen to this song more than 2 ½ times. So I guess it succeeds the band’s goal but unfortunately that doesn’t make it any better for me
The Battle - Lucien comes into the battlefield with a great army and is surprised to see Lolzeez standing there just by himself. While he decides if sending his whole army against one guy would be seen as unfair Lolzeez takes a knife out and cuts his veins while crying
Winner - Lucien
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. DTVT - Evergrey - King of errors
Boy this song is fun and powerful. The intro left me thinking that this could be something soft and peaceful but no, it immediately goes in yo’ face. I’ve been neglecting prog metal lately and this song really makes me wonder why. The vocalist does an amazing job, the keyboards provide a great ambience and the guitars are simple but very effective. And the chorus is so damn catchy.
Xenon - Plini - Sweet Nothingness
Fantastic jazzy vibe with an incredible instrumentation. The drums are simply mind blowing, a great display of technique and timing. The piano sections were also very nice and add a lot to the song. I do get a bit lost when the guitar comes in with the distortion changing the mood cause there’s not a good transition but it picks up a bit towards the end
The Battle - Dr. DVTV rides with his army of norse fighters down the hills, all thirsty for battle and blood. Xenon’s army doesn’t look like much really but when the fight starts his men show that what they lack in intimidation is compensated by their fighting skills. It is a bloody battle with men falling on both sides until it all comes down to the generals facing each other. Dr. DTVT goes at it with strength and heart, showing that after all the fight he still has energy left within him. Xenon puts a great fight and is determined to not fall down so easily but at the end of the day, the norse heart prevails.
Winner - Dr. DTVT
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sacul - David Maxim Micic - Where is now?
The female vocals and the keyboards stand out to me as they have a very nice harmony. The guitar and drums are not very impressive yet both do a good job at setting the tone of the song. I usually appreciate the good use of violin in a song and while I liked it here I feel like it was thrown in there just because. The first half of the song really gets my attention but the second one falls a bit short.
Cheater.boy - Dec Burke - Signs of life
Quoting you: “Win if you can, lose if you must but always cheat”. As you mentioned, this sounds very Frost*y and you know I love Frost*. The keyboards and the vocals are great and the song is greatly crafted to be very intense even though it is clearly led by the keyboards.
The Battle - Sacul runs into the battlefield followed closely by his men, all dressed in shiny armor and ready to fight. Little does he know that Jingle.boy has rigged the game already. Before Sacul’s men are able to reach Jingle’s the floor starts trembling and braking, leading the army to fall into a bottomless pit while Jingle.boy sits in a throne laughing and eating cake.
Winner - Jingle.boy
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Seneca - Need - Mother Madness
I like the smooth intro and how the song goes into powerful mode right on, unfortunately that’s as far as it goes. I feel they are trying to be prog just for the sake of it and making the song lose any flow it might have. The chorus is nice the first time, the second times it feels a bit boring. I did enjoy the more mellow sections but overall I can’t grasp the song.
Lonestar - Dream the electric sleep - Utopic
Really nice intro which leads into a very smooth and enjoyable build up. After that the song goes a little stale for a while but manages to pick up when it goes upbeat. I enjoyed the singer’s voice, definitely the highlight in the song. The first solo is not very impressive but the second one while simple fits the song a lot better.
The Battle - Since Seneca and RJ know each other they go at it like real men and set to fight without any support, just a one on one, mano a mano. Seneca is young and fast and quickly gains the advantage on lonestar who seems a bit tired after working 80 hs in the past week. Seneca realizes he has an advantage and gets confident in his chances, a little too confident maybe since he fails to see RJ reaching into his apron pocket for some pepper. Next thing he knows his eyes are on fire and he’s blinded. RJ patiently gets behind him and stabs him with his biggest knife, chops him into pieces and starts thinking what he’ll have as a side dish for dinner...
Winner - Lonestar
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scorpion - Flaming Row - Nightingales Chirp
Groovy and changing song with really good transitions, a powerful chorus and a great mix of vocalists. That bass had me almost jumping out of my chair, I just couldn’t stop moving to it’s rhythm. The only thing that threw me off a bit where the silences when the solo comes in but since it’s very brief and they pick it up quickly, it’s not that bad
GentlemanofDreaf - White Willow - Sunburn
Well, this song really brings me down into a dark place. It’s quite somber and has that slow pacing that feels like walking through a swamp. There’s some light in there provided by the female vocalist and a very fitting violin but to be honest I’m more of a happy music kinda guy.
The Battle - GentlemanodDread won the coin toss and got to chose the battlefield. Scorp’s army passes the hill and they find themselves looking at a dark, cold and quiet swamp. They stop and evaluate the situation as it seems that they are at a disadvantage here. Fortunately for him, as a good German, he’s always prepared and brings up his Napalm throwers to the front. Everything ends up quickly with shouts of pain as GoD’s creatures burn into the night.
Winner - Scorpion
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
kingshmegland - Anubis - Blood is thicker than common sense
A surprisingly groovy song considering how prog it is. The first section is very good and complimented perfectly by the chorus. After that the song goes downhill, not drastically but it slowly turns less interesting. The last minute and a half could just be cut off.
Freezingpoint - Marco Sfogli - The Forest
Quite an impressive display of technique. I like the more jazzy start of the song, very mellow and enjoyable. The transitions are smooth and don’t break the flow of the song at any moment. I got a bit bored when he started soloing like crazy but then the ending of the song makes up for it. I enjoy a good display of technique but in the right amount.
The Battle - King’s men ride through the forest following their leader who as usual is pretty drunk and riding aimlessly while making dick jokes. His lieutenants look at each other worriedly and ask the King where they are heading. “To the battlefield” he replies and laughs again. Going deeper into the forest everything starts growing quieter and more calm, something that would normally make this men more alert but on the contrary they feel relaxed. Exactly what Freezingpoint was waiting for. While King’s men walk absentmindedly, arrows start coming down from the trees like lightning and men fall down from the branches attacking the surprised soldiers. The battle is a short one, with the King’s men falling, with him last, still laughing and making dick jokes.
Winner - Freezingpoint
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tyrias - Susanne Sundfor - The silicone veil
As you said, you took quite a risk. At first I wasn’t sure how the song was gonna turn because the intro is just so soft and peaceful. It took a couple of listens for me to overcome my natural rejection for poppy sounding music but I ended up enjoying this a lot. Good use of the keyboards being supported by a very simple but effective percussion. And her voice, oh my gawd her voice...
TAC - Sun Caged - Shades of Hades
Nice prog metal tune, it has all the classic elements of the genre. Unfortunately they don’t go out of the, let’s call it “Cliche” prog metal tune much. I liked the little bass solo almost at the beginning, that was a nice touch.
The Battle TAC army of rabid men is sailing to the battlefield, the sea is calm, the sun is up and there are no clouds, it’s the perfect day for fighting. The shore is near when suddenly a melody comes out of nowhere, more beautiful than anything this men have ever heard. TAC is doesn’t fall under the spell but all of his men do so there’s nothing he can do to stop them changing course and heading towards the rocks where the sound is coming from. A single mermaid stands atop the highest rock singing her song and the men forget to stir the boat, crashing against the rocks. TAC jumps off the boat and tries to swim for the shore but he is caught by one of the many sharks that roam the siren’s rocks. Before being dragged deep into the water he curses his men and Tyrias, who sits comfortably in the beach having a mojito and enjoying the show.
Winner - Tyrias
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adace - Threshold - Watchtower on the moon
Really good and powerful riffs, great use of the keyboards to provide background support and good vocals. The flow of the song seems a bit wrong but overall it’s an enjoyable song.
theseoafs - Surrendered
The Battle - Before the fight even started theseoafs announced that he was surrendering thinking he could easily escape death but he only managed to delay it. The ruler of the kingdom decided he would set an example to discourage this kind of behavior so he sent theseoafs to the darkest dungeon of his great castle where he was kept alive until he turned old, all the while having to watch twilight marathons, being awaken with Justin Bieber songs played at an almost deafening volume and occasionally being raped by Ron Jeremy.
Winner - Adace
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Winners go through to the next round. Remember, from now on it's a battle royal where songs will be scored each round and the lowest score gets eliminated. I didn't mention this before so I want to make it clear now, the score is summed up each round. That way none of you will be a slacker.
To everybody that got eliminated thanks for joining and sorry you couldn't go further. In some cases I was a prisoner of my own rules and had a hard time deciding who to let through.
-
Well, that sure was fun! :yeahright
-
It would have been sweeter to win against Chad with Flaming Row, but you can't have it all. Thank you, band that has yet to let me down in roulettes! \m/
-
Nekov, don't give up on Threshold. I understand sending the new song (since that's what I did as well), but I don't think Watchtower on the Moon would make my list of top 20 Threshold songs, whereas the Evergrey song I sent you could have competed for a top 5 spot.

Agreed 100%. March of Progress or Wounded Land would be good places to start
Oh snap! I let the old farts down. Go get em' RJ & Chad and Mason!
Yeah, wth!?!?! Although, I'm glad you played Anubis and not me. I was holding them for later... though I would've likely picked a different song. I gotta go have a listen to Marco Sfogli - The Forest now.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lonestar - Redemption - Peel
A powerful tune. I like the use of the keys both when they’re providing background as well as driving with the melody. The song is pretty consistent and flows well though nothing stands out to me.
Score: 5
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tyrias - The National - Wake up your saints
So this is “happy”? :lol Nice tune with a slow buildup with a good work from the piano. Everything is quite simple but that’s alright because it all fits together. I find the pace of the song soothing even though it’s not slow.
Score: 7
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Freezingpoint - Shiny Toy Guns - Wait for me
Weirdest song of the bunch by far. You took a risk and I’d say it payed off. The intro is a bit misleading but right after that the song shows what it’s about. Both vocals are great and the music is obviously thought to support them. The electronic elements bring a different and refreshing feeling to the already soothing mood.
Score: 7
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lucien - Alexander Borodin - Polovetsian Dances
Another nice piece of classical music. This one more mellow than the one you sent before but not as solid. The individual sections are nice yet the transitions seem a bit forced and attempt against the natural flow of the song and eventually it gets a bit stale.
Score: 4
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jingle.boy - Bruce Springsteen - Jungleland
Very nice intro and some good ol’ rockin right after that. I like that the song is more piano led, contrary to what I would expect from Springsteen. Closer to the middle of the song it starts getting a bit boring and loses all the great momentum it had built upon which is a bit of a shame. It does seem to wanna pick up at the end but it’s just too late.
Score: 5
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. DTVT - Fish - Vigil in a wilderness of mirrors
The song starts out very calm and my first impression was boring but after listening to what comes after I think it’s fine since it provides a nice setup to the buildup that comes after. The song turns out really nice and beautiful, I love happy music and this qualifies as that. Even better because it has good instrumentation and sets some good moods.
Score: 7
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scorp - Beyond the bridge - The call
Powerful song. It’s another quite standard prog metal song that is good but lacks that something special that makes a band stand out.
Score: 5

whew... just snuck thru. Ok, time to buckle down this round.
-
Glad you liked it! If you listen to anything else from their latest 2 albums, you'll get why I consider this song happy by comparison^^.
Whats your stance on sennding bands that have already been sent? And so you add up the points or does each round count extra?
-
Bands that have already been sent are banned. And quoting myself to answer the second question:
Remember the scoring adds up each round.
-
Sent... put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Wow, glad you liked it so much! Your reaction is pretty much the same I had the first time I listened to them (and every time since).

Dr. DTVT - Pyramid Theorem - Another day slips by
Nice intro and even better transition to the more powerful section. The guitar melodies are very nice, the keys provide a great background and the drums are quite interesting. Overall a good song and as you said, this stands out in the prog metal world.
Score: 7
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adace - Mono - Follow the map
I love me some post rock. I have been procrastinating with this band, I’ve seen it around here a lot but never got to listening to any of their work. Very soothing and peaceful song with great string work and beautiful guitar melodies. Luckily they knew not to make it too long though it leaves me wanting a bit more.
Score: 7
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scorp - Sikth - In this light
There are some interesting bits to the song but the cadence and the overall feeling I get from it are not very satisfying. As I said before, I’m more of a happy music kinda guy.
Score: 4
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lonestar - Shaft of steel - Drive
I knew what to expect as soon as I saw the name of the band and quite frankly I was not disappointed. While it’s cheesy it still manages to be very fun and powerful. Man I wanna be at these guys’ concert rocking the hell out of this song.
Score: 9
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tyrias - Flogging Molly - You won’t make a fool out of me
Fun song but this super Irish stuff gets old pretty quickly and it all sounds more or less the same. I enjoyed it but it’s just one more Irish song.
Score: 5
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Freezingpoint - Les Friction - World on fire
This song is weird. It feels like it could easily be a soundtrack for a movie or something of the sort. It has some really cool sections thought the transitions are a bit sudden and mess up with the flow. The vocalist is quite amazing.
Score: 6
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jingle.boy - Roswell Six - I am the point
Groovy song, nice melodies and rhythms. The whole instrumental section of the song is quite amazing. Unfortunately for you your cheatin didn’t play here. First of all Labrie is my least favorite DT member so not a good choice and second he brings the song down with that horrible chorus. If this song was purely instrumental it would be fantastic.

Dr. DTVT - Knifeworld - Send him seaworthy
The overall feeling of the song is quite somber and uncomfortable for the first half. There are some sections with nice guitar melodies and the vocals are quite alright but the use of winds brings the song down every time. The second half is better especially during the instrumental section.
Score: 5
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adace - The contortionist - Language I: Intuition
The intro to this song is just perfect, that guitar melody drives me crazy and luckily for me it didn’t stop there. When the rest of the band joins everything gets all over the place yet still very driven by that same melody. I normally can’t stand growls but here they have a good contrast against the clearer voice. Theres’ some jazz in here, metal, prog rock and everything is very well connected.
Score: 9
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lonestar - Persona Grata - Ace
The intro is kinda weird, it has a strange vibe to it not very pleasing. After that it gets quite nice. The guitar melodies are very attracting, the vocals with all the changes are very solid and the song itself varies a lot, sometimes the transitions don’t feel right but other they fit just right.
Score: 6
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tyrias - Guro von germeten - A tiger and a daffodil
Yeah, just no. Circus music is really not my thing at all except when used correctly within another musical genre.
Score: 2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FreezingPoint - Kip Winger - Endless circles
The piano intro is just beautiful and the rest of the song is as well. I like when everything in a song fits just right and there are little arrangements here and there that bring a sudden breath of life. I felt very relaxed and joyful listening to this tune.
Score: 8

Adace - If these trees could talk - Thirty-six silos
Nice post rock song, very true to the genre. The guitar work is quite good with some great melodies. The transition between peace and intensity is so well done.
Score: 8
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. DTVT - Ice Age - Perpetual child
Man this song is really good. I don’t think I have listened to anything like this recently or maybe ever. It has a great combination of classic prog and metal and is quite different from the average prog metal band. Not sure if it’s the keys or the guitar sound but I simply loved it.
Score: 8
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
jingle.boy - Star one - Cassandra Complex
Nice cheating again. Out of all the great vocalists the one that gets me more is Dan Swano, I fucking love how the guys sings. The song overall is amazing with lots of similarities with Ayreon, great keyboards and awesome guitar lines
Score: 9
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lonestar - Mandroid Echostar - Ancient arrows
Another fun song. I like the guitar work throughout the whole song the most. The singers voice was a bit annoying to be honest and the ending threw me off a little bit but other than that everything pretty much falls into place.
Score: 7
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Freezingpoint - Franz Liszt - Les preludes
Some nice passages here and there but as with most classical music I liked it a lot during the first listen but then it got less interesting with each new listen. Nothing wrong with the song it’s just how I feel about this genre as a whole.

Lonestar - Shineback - Rise up forgotten, return destroyed
There are so many great things about this song that I don’t even know where to start. Everything is perfectly in place, the melodies are great, the vocals are great and that instrumental with a bit of a jazzy vibe is awesome. It even has a good a cappella section.
Score: 9
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
jingle.boy - Powerworld - East comes to west
Ah, Mac’s voice is so awesome. The song overall is nice and flows quite write from each section to another and I like each section separate as well as the whole thing. It does fail to get me all pumped up but it’s still very enjoyable.
Score: 6
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adace - Skyharbor - Evolution
Weird song but quite interesting. Lots of melodies and musical landscapes and oddly enough everything falls in place despite the differences. The vocals are a bit weak for me mostly because of the singer´s voice.
Score: 7
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. DTVT - Jolly - Joy
Well, I’m not getting the happy part of the song :P The piano melody is really nice but the rest is a bit more somber really, not dark, not at all but still I would hardly call this an uplifting song. It’s a bit samey all throughout and not very interesting
Score: 5

Fuck that man, let's duke it out in the finals. I got my album picked already, and I'll even tell you what it is so you can really start sweating bullets.
As far as the Shineback album goes, it was very close to being my AOTY last year, and that tune was easily my song of the year. Whole thing streams on Bandcamp, well worth the time.
-

I don't count my chickens before they hatch. One round at a time. Plus, I'm a realist... Adace would have to score 4 or under for me to mathematically get ahead of him.
-
Sent, let's take this fucker home...

Lonestar - Silent Memorial - The Darkest Hour
I really liked the intro to the song and the use of keyboards throughout the whole song however the rest is pretty much standard prog metal and not very interesting.
Score: 6
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jingle.boy - Magnus Karlsson’s Freefall - Not my savior
Read above minus the intro and keyboard part. You would have been better off sending Alpha Rev.
Score: 5
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adace - Kamelot - Falling like the farenheit
By far your worst submission. Pretty boring song overall where the only thing I can point out as good are the female vocals and that’s like 10 seconds of the song at most? I didn’t dislike the song but I didn’t enjoy it either
Score: 4

OK guys, this is the last round. Those points you see there don't matter any more, it's a one on one, mano a mano. You both send me an album and the best one will take this roulette home. In case you can't find it on grooveshark or youtube send me a message and we'll figure it out.

On the first part, you're probably right. Should've kept cheating, and sent with my head... alas, I went with my heart. On the second, neither was I, so I exit with my head held high.
You really are an enigma when it comes to the Prog Metal genre. These were three awesome songs. All 8s and 9s in my books.

Just wanted to let you know I've been kinda busy. I'll have final results up between Thursday and the end of the year ;)

Lonestar - Karnya - Coverin’ Thoughts
My first thought when I pressed play was “well, I’ll have to sit through an hour of standard prog metal” but as we all know people shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover. After that initial song the album starts slowly drifting into a cleaner and more prog sound and by the end it’s plain awesome. The transformation is quite stunning to be honest, first because I didn’t expect it and second because it was so smooth that by the end of the album I hardly remembered that initial dislike I had. As you said in your message, this band is something else.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adace - Myrath - Tales of the Sands
I started listening to this and it felt a bit familiar so I looked at my past roulettes and it turns out someone had sent this band to me before and at that time I thought it was just OK. This time though I found it to be quite interesting and enjoyable than that time, maybe this works better as an album than individual songs for me, not sure really. Point is, I liked this, some very powerful stuff mixed with those nice “arab” vibes and lots of prog. I’m hooked.
I thought about giving scores but it was pretty close. You both did a great job throughout but the rules say I can have only 1 winner so.....
Congrats Lonestar!
It was a hard to chose a winner here but at the end of the day I feel more inclined to listening to that Karnya album a bit more that the Myrath one.
There's a prize for you if you keep going down :tup
Thanks everyone who participated. I have tons of new music to research.

Thanks, Nekov for running a fun roulette. I'll definitely play again if you have another one.

I'm officially creeped right the fuck out.
RJ, congrats pal. And as usual, the real winner is the host.
-
Bloody hell - I thought I'd check in and see how things went but not sure I made the right call ;D
-
Sweet, double pleased that Karnya beat out Myrath, that album is hella sick. The coolest thing about the Karnya album is that once you start grasping what they're doing with the concept, it just gets so much more brilliant.
Thanks for running this thing with class as usual, and a tip o the hat to adace, with that album, I would have had no shame in losing..
Not even gonna mention how hot that pic is Chad, good thing I didn't see it before we hung out yesterday ;)
-
Didn't think I could get any more creeped out by that picture.
