Title: Dr. DTVT's Peaceful, Euro-game styled roulette - Round 7 results
Post by: Dr. DTVT on August 26, 2014, 08:04:58 PM
Ok, I started the murderous roulette theme at the end of my first roulette, and took the bloodshed to levels not seen since in my second roulette.  My third one I made the mistake of making people stick to one band.  But I learn.  A few years ago I got into strategic board games and Euro-styled board games, and I'm going to try to take some themes I picked up from them and apply them to a roulette.  Maybe some of my innovations will stick.

While I'm looking for new music, I want to have a little more fun with this because I have about 3 metric assloads (yes, that is now an official SI unit of measurement) of CD's.  So the first thing I'm going to do is not eliminate anyone.  If you are in, you are in to the end.

While I'm not going to have divisions, I want to take four people who I know well and know their musical tastes align very strongly with mine (Team Fogey, even if they are younger than me), and four people whose tastes I am less familiar with, or I think will provide me with music that Team Fogey won't send but I will still like (Team Wild Card).  I assign teams, because the teams aren't really playing against each other. Before signing up, take a look at my last.fm here https://www.last.fm/user/mrouser (https://www.last.fm/user/mrouser) and see if you have 9 rounds worth of material.  If you do, keep reading.

So, how am I going to incorporate Euro-style games into a roulette?  First, there will be FIVE scoring aspects, of which two will be public, scoring from the other three will be completely hidden to other players.  The public scoring will be the traditional "how much did I like the song", scored from 1 to 8 based on ranking, with a bonus point going to the player whose song fits the round theme best in my opinion.  The first private scoring method is that along with your song, you are going to send me a secret parameter, and whichever song OTHER THAN THE ONE YOU SENT matches that parameter, that person gets bonus points, and the more parameters a song wins, the more bonus points it gets.  But you can't score on your own parameter, so if you say "shortest song", and end up sending the shortest song, the person with the second shortest song would get you point.  More on this later.  The second private method is to pick a song from a band on a secret list of 15 bands which I think cover a wide range of styles.  The last private method, and maybe the hardest to get, is what I call reversal points.  If you send me a song from an album that I either own or used to own and gave up on, AND I end up liking it, that's worth some cheddar.  To a lesser extent, if it is a band or from an album I listened to a before and you send me a song that makes me reconsider, that's worth at least some imitation cheddar.  The partially hidden score I am taking from games like "Lords of Waterdeep" and "Nightfall".

So, why should you keep your true score hidden?  Because there is going to be a system in place that allows the people in last and next last place to place a handicap on the player they feel they need to catch up to, which will most likely be the players in first and second place on the public score.  I already have picked handicaps the players can choose from, and each round I will introduce nastier ones the game progresses.  It should make things more fun.  The handicapping mechanism is taken from several games, but "Power Grid" is the first one that came to mind.

If you have any questions, post them in here and I'll answer them.

I've no desire to join (especially after perusing your Last.fm), but I'm looking forward to following this one. The concepts you've got going here sound interesting.

I'm in fo sho. Pretty sure I've got 9 bands in my arsenal.

I'm already confused as fuck on the rules, themes, scoring etc... But it can't be any less complicated than the systems I came up with.  :lol

I'll figure it out as we go.

Put me in as a maybe. Just need to make sure I have enough material to send for 9 rounds that I feel confident in.

I'll give this a try. I think I understood the rules.

But, didn't you say that there are two public aspects, and then went on to name only one? Or is one of them the 1-8 points and the other the optional bonus point for the best theme fit?

I'm already confused as fuck on the rules, themes, scoring etc...

Take your geritol,  Chad.

Scrop, yes, the second one is the bonus for fitting the round theme.  Fitting the user supplied hidden themes is secret points.

Also, collusion (RJ and Chad) will be met with harsh reprisal.  Lonestar and jingle are on team Fogey.  Obfuscation is on team Wild Card if he decides to play.  Scrop, even though you are young, I think I know your tastes well and you might end up on team Fogey.  Not certain yet.

TAC is on Team Fogey.  I think Nekov and Scorp could go either way because I kind of feel like I know what you would send.  You both can play, I just hope I can find two more people who can shake things up for me, like Metty and kari (Ruben) did in my second roulette.  Dark Castle, get your ass in here.

Just re-read the rules and I think I've got it.  Already conducting my listening research.

Question, doe the secret parameter have to be something that only one other participant can be awarded?  You used the example of shortest song - only one song can be the shortest obviously. What about a parameter like 'song from a debut album'. More than one song could qualify.

Lets see

Team Fogey: oldstar, jingle_grandpa, TAC (The Angry Coot), Necro (Nekov)

Team Wild Card: Obfuscation, Scrop, Dark Castle, Sacul

Obfuscation said he was a maybe, but its his until he relinquishes.  However, if someone wants to claim the backup spot go for it.  Still have to wait for DC to finish, so it might be a week or two.

No, there will be themes, but they should be broad enough that people can find something in their library, so as much as I would like to have a "heavy and brutal as all fuck" round, I don't think that would be fair.  I'll get started when it is my turn, I don't want to rush people.  I just knew that you were on your next to last round and someone else was on final round, and I think the third one is pretty far along too.

Shit, I passed over your post this morning.  We can play with nine, I'll just score two songs the same each round.  Probably seven point level.

I say we call Seneca "Uncle Albert" for this roulette.

Another question on the 'secret parameter' thing (though it's not like you answered my first question!).  Can it be something subjective... like 'song you'd be most likely to play during your weekly enema'.
Title: Re: Dr. DTVT's Peaceful, Non-violent, Euro-game styled roulette - sign-up phase
Post by: Dr. DTVT on August 28, 2014, 08:20:19 PM
The secret parameter should be something I can pick either objectively or subjectively each round.  So "something from a debut album" would not work because everyone might send something from a later album.  It cuts down on research time on my part, and prevents collusion.  So 'song you'd be most likely to play during your weekly enema' would be ok if I tweeked it to 'song you'd be most likely to play if I had to have an enema'.

Post by: jingle.boy on August 28, 2014, 08:42:05 PM
ok, so at least one song has to be awarded a point from the secret parameter?  Because, I'm racking my brains to think of something objective amontstly 9 random songs, other than song length, that would be unique to have only have one qualifying song.  I'm not coming up with anything.

I don't want to tell you how to do your job, but you could have choose something like best riff, most interesting drumming, or  waiting at the DMV.  Reread my post, I said objectively or subjectively; just make it something I could reasonably apply to 99.5% of songs (because there could always be some random outlier).

Well, wouldn't a good strategy be to offer a parameter that NO song got a point from?  Like, song with the word triskaidekaphobia in it.   :lol

I got it now... Every parameter will have one song earn a bonus point from it.  Assuming that parameters can't be reused, my spidey sense is telling me this could get difficult come the later rounds.  9 participants; 9 rounds; 81 different parameters we have to come up with.

Some can get reused inadvertently.  Secret parameters will only be revealed to people when they win them and at the end of the game.

Dr. DTVT scoring summary for Dummies:

1 - he stack ranks; songs earn between 1 and 8 points
2 - potential bonus point(s) for hitting a 'secret parameter' - each player submits a 'secret parameter'
3 - potential bonus point for turning Doc on to a song he once dismissed
4 - ???? - something to do with a list of 15 bands
5 - ???? - something to do with being handicapped

How am I doing so far?

Time to get started.  I don't have spotify, but youtube and grooveshark work.  Also, if you want to send me an mp3 or aac file, my email is mrouser  (at)  coker (dot) edu

Some of you have another email address for me, but I check my old work email a lot and it is a gmail addy, so large attachments are not a problem, and if needed you can share on your google drive if you have one and the file is too large.

Since we are starting, your theme for round one is "Ignition".  Take that as you may.

Also, send a secret parameter in your PM as well, and remember you can't score on your parameter, only other players.  And don't help your friends...people in the lead get handicaps that last for two rounds  :xbones

Secret parameter scoring:

Match 1 - 1 point
Match 2 - 3 points
Match 3 - 6 points
Match 4 - 10 points
Match 5 - 15 points
Match 6 - 21 points
Match 7 - 28 points
Match 8 - 36 points
Match 9 - 45 points

I doubt anyone will get more than 3 matches in a round unless they are lucky and multiple people sent the same parameter.

The one downside to running this with secret parameters is that I can't start listening until I have all songs in.

Still waiting on YBS and Obfuscation, as well as a secret parameter from Scrop, who forgot.

I've listened to every song once.  Because lonestar can't read and I didn't know it was free, I now have a spotify account (free version).

I also accidentally discovered something really cool.  I didn't realize spotify would take me to the next song automatically, so I played Dark Castle's song overtop the song after lonestar's song, and it was awesome sauce.  Too bad I can't take that into account when scoring.  I'll post the links when I do write-ups, probably Friday night, Steelers play Thursday night and I might still be writing a test tomorrow night for Friday's class.

Seeing that I not only own, but have reviewed that album, I would have rejected it.

I do like that band though, so your thoughts were in the right place.  The top three will almost certainly be TAC, Dark Castle, and Senecadawg2 in some way shape or form (I know the order, just want to leave some suspense).  I'd say 4th place, 8th and 9th are also pretty secure.  I just have two more parameters to make decisions on.  Round will be scored late night Friday for sure.  Emphasis on late - I have to attend a dinner to honor one of our department's biggest donors tomorrow night.

Also, please make sure there is room to get PM's, because I will need to inform some of you of secret points scored, and I will have to inform the low players of their options for handicapping the top players.

Bold added for emphasis.

Round 1 – Ignition
jingle.boy: Epysode – Driven
Jingle sent two songs, the first being an intro track, but 2 minutes is a little much for a lead-in track to be an addition to another song.  The intro track was called “Ignition”.  My biggest gripe with this song was the singer.  He just wasn’t working for me on this track, and it felt like a step down from the Epysode album I do have.  Musically, it was fine, but nothing that stood out and grabbed my attention.  I’ve listened to all the songs at least 3 times, and this one a few more since it wasn’t that long of a track, but I honestly can’t recall anything from it.  Things stick to my mind for good and bad reasons, so if nothing sticks, that’s pretty average.
4/8

Scorpion: Adagio – Dominate
The beginning of the song immediately made me think of the x-4 castle world on Super Mario Brothers :lol  Scorp also went the look into my last.fm and find something I had few listens on.  I have never owned any Adagio albums, so I am guessing it came up some time a few years ago when I would play a band’s “radio station” on last.fm.  But I had heard of them.  This had a Gothenburg metal feel to it that largely hit the spot, and this song grew on me with each listen.  The cleans are good, and the harsh vocals are used sparingly and appropriately.  Adagio is certainly on my radar now.
5/8

TAC: Hibria – High Speed Breakout
If there were points for best cover art, this might have won that.  This song felt like one of the rarest of birds, power metal that isn’t cheesy; at least the parts of the song with singing going on.  The instrumental sections had a speed and thrash metal vibe to them, keeping the song fresh throughout.  Another band on my radar now.  Make sure you read your two round handicap below.
7/8

lonestar: InnerShine – Divided In Two
This is one of those songs where I was scratching my head about the theme.  Then lonestar tried to blame it on his vacation.  Nevertheless, this song lacked the punch I was looking for this round.  That gripe aside, even before I was made aware of lonestar’s mental vacation I was scoring this round based on how much I liked the music.  While this song certainly grew on me a little bit, all that really stood out was an instrumental section, and that the song after this on Spotify sounded really cool when I accidentally played it while listening to Dark Castle’s song.  Again, there’s that whole reading comprehension thing, because I had to sign up for an account.  I didn’t realize it was a free service though, so I guess that brain fart smelled like roses.  In all, it was a nice song, but not nice enough to stack up against some of the other songs in this round.
4/8

Dark Castle: Wormrot – Loathsome Delusions
The first time I heard this song, it was playing simultaneously with a different InnerShine song and it had a wonderful contrast that made a really cool song.  Then the ferocity stopped after 1:25 and I was left with some touchy feely song, and at that point I realized there was another song playing in the background.  It was at that point I learned Spotify just moved to the next song.  So DC’s song was very short.  But much like a good story, I wanted more.  After some initial feedback noise (which I’ve always hated), the song goes straight for the jugular in a brutal flurry of riffs and fills, then the brutality goes up when the harsh vocals come in.  This is the song you play when you want to show the world you have no fucks to give about their opinion.  It’s harsh and brutal, and while DC and I might be the only people in this thread to like this type of stuff, its great in small doses, which is why most of Wormrot’s songs are less than 2 minutes long.
6/8

senecadawg2: Orden Ogan – Nobody Leaves
It’s a good thing I’m not lactose intolerant, because I got my recommended daily dose of dairy on this song.  BUT I LOVED IT.  This is power metal done right, and that’s important in a genre where there are some good acts, but there are lots of bad ones that seem to bring the genre down.  I feel like I got to get my hands on this, and I’m sure it won’t be that long until I do.
8/8

Obfuscation: Boris – Just Abandoned My-Self
This song shows the difficulty of making a long song.  Clocking in at over 18 minutes, it had some really cool sections that if isolated and tied tightly together would have scored very well.  However, the song had a real lack of bass and all that treble was exhausting, and that might be part of what made the song feel repetitive in some of its stanzas, and made the guitar and noise middle section boring and droning.  I appreciate the risk, but that middle section made the subsequent listens feel like a chore.
1/8

Sacul: David Maxim Micic – Where Is Now?
My impression of this song is that it could be a song that was written for Devin Townsend’s Epicloud, didn’t make the cut, and was then recorded by finding replacements for Devin Townsend and Anneke to take over the vocals.  Basically, it sounded like a DTP knock-off for the most part.
3/8

Nekov: Galleon – Before the Sunrise
This song challenges lonestar’s song for the title of “Antithesis of Round Theme”.  Again, taking the lack of a proper theme fit aside, this song didn’t really have any parts that grabbed my attention.  It was nice and mellow, but suffers from sounding a little too samey over the course of 9+ minutes.
2/8

While a few people have songs that fit the theme, and even though jingle tried to go with an actual song called Ignition, TAC’s song explodes right from the get go, and so he’s going to get the round theme point.

If you earned any private points, you have been informed by PM.

Public Standings:
Senecadawg2 – 8
TAC – 8
Dark Castle – 6
Scorpion - 5
Lonestar – 4
Jingle.boy – 4
Sacul – 3
Nekov – 2
Obfuscation – 1

HANDICAPS
Senecadawg2, for the next TWO rounds, you must send me instrumental songs.

Two things: 1) don't forget to send a secret parameter (lonestar)

2) make sure your parameter is something that could reasonably apply to most songs.  Remember, somebody will score on it.  Don't give a specific situation or genre.  Think things like _______iest song, or best song to do while _________, or something that could be easily determined like song whose length is the mode for the round.

There was an issue with one of the songs I got, and since I am essentially grading 9 songs on anywhere from 5 to 10 criteria each round, rounds will go a little slower than usual.  Doesn't mean I'm not listening, it just means I have to listen more.  If it goes to page 2, so be it, lots of things get discussed here.

Round 2 – Evolution
Sacul: Infected Mushroom – Becoming Insane
To be fair, this was his backup song, as the song he tried to send was not available on Spotify, but it is in his country.  I wish I could have heard that song, because this song missed the mark in terms of what I like.  I appreciate that you went outside of the box, but the first half of the song lost my interest.  The second half of the song improved, but the electronic drum did absolutely nothing for me.  The highlight of the song was the Middle Eastern inspired riff, and had the song been built more around that I think I would have liked it more, but this was clearly my least favorite song of the round.
1/8

TAC: Eldritch – Our Land
Another strong submission from TAC.  Italian power metal bands tend to be more miss than hit for me, but this one has potential to be hit for me I think.  While I don’t mind cheese, this song manages to avoid it, and the environmentalist in me digs the message of the song.  The singer wasn’t doing much for me, but beyond that this was very much in my wheelhouse.
5/8

Obfuscation: Blotted Science – Cretaceous Chasm
Obfuscation decided to impose the same handicap he slapped on senecadawg2 this round and went with an instrumental.  AND HE TOTALLY REDEMED HIMSELF.  The tension built up over the course of this song is intense, and in the end we never get that resolution of the I chord at the end of the song.  The song was very technical, but never felt like it devolved into wankery for wankery sake, and was an intense, enjoyable listen each time.
7/8

senecadawg2: Clint Mansell – Death is the Road to Awe
When I was looking into the artist background for some info related to the secret parameter, I realized I knew who this guy was, at least musically.  Clint is the former front man of Pop Will Eat Itself, a band I was familiar with in the mid 90s.  Based on this song, I never would have made the connection, so that evolution, which I have no idea if senecadawg2 was aware of or not was pretty cool.  I noticed from his related videos that he did the soundtrack to Requiem of a Dream, and this song sounds like it should be a part of that even though it is not.  The song starts out as an mellow instrumental duet, but as the strings and other elements get added in, what was relaxing number begins to build up tension, and finishes in an intense climax.  The song alone wins the theme, and all the background info I learned showed it wasn’t just evolution in the song, but in Clint’s career.  I thoroughly enjoyed, but not quite as much as the top two.
6/8

Nekov: Yargos – Human Nature
Wait…I know this voice…It’s Mac!  Funny that you sent me Mac after receiving Mac from jingle in your roulette.  Mac aside, the rest of the band is solid as well.  A good, but not spectacular, prog metal song.  Not much more to say.
5/8

lonestar: Shineback – Rise Up Forgotten, Return Destroyed
Not bad, but nothing really grabbed me.  I don’t see why this needed to be a 10+ minute song.  It felt like a 5 minute song stretched over 10.5 minutes because that’s what you are supposed to do as a prog band.
2/8

jingle.boy: Thunderstone – Down With Me
5 listens in and nothing really sticking to the wall.  I don’t hear anything I don’t like, but this is the musical equivalent of some random dude waving hello on the street
4/8

Scorpion: Destiny Potato – Lunatic
You got some solid brass balls going here after my cold shoulder to DMM last round.  It was an improvement in many ways. However, it just ran up against a stronger group of songs. Probably the most maddening part of the song was the first line of the chorus reminded me of some other song and I still haven’t put my finger on it, and it’s pissing me off :lol  That’s not a knock on the song.  One of the things that bugged me was the guitar was way too loud in the mix, it was overpowering and jarring at times, pushing for more space than it probably needed.  I slowly warmed up to this song, but the guitar just overpowering the female vocalist was just a little much.  The circus bits I didn’t get either.
3/8

Dark Castle: Howl – Heavenless
This song is just a sledgehammer of awesomeness to the face, if you like harsh vocals.  One of the best harsh vocals I’ve ever heard.  I need more of this band.  It’s hard, heavy, and gritty, and starts with a nice build up over a sinister bass line.  This song just drips with evil, and relies on the vocals for the heaviness, as the guitar tone is not laden in effects, allowing the rhythm of song to take center stage.  Easily my favorite of the round.
8/8

Round theme winner: Senecadawg2

HANDICAPS

Senecadawg2, for the next TWO rounds, you must send me songs less than 4 minutes, and the song next round must also be an instrumental.
TAC, for the next round, your song must be between 4 and 5 minutes.
Dark Castle, for the next TWO rounds your song must be from a band that begins with one of these letters: G, H, L, U, or V

Round 3 theme is dangerous

Round 3 – Danger
Sacul:  Saviour Machine – Carnival of Souls
A long time ago, on a prog message board long since deceased, I heard of this band, and was told by someone that I would probably like this band except for its Christian message.  I was more militant in my beliefs back then, and now consider bands like Affector and Theocracy important parts of my collection because musically they are so good, without getting overly evangelical.  I don’t know if I’m getting a lot of Christian influence in this, but I am hearing a lot of good stuff.  Sonically, this reminds me a little bit of Type O Negative, which makes me think I should pull out my Type O Negative again.  This was a very strong song in a very strong round, but pretty different from the other 6 point song this round.
6/8

TAC: Reverence – When Darkness Calls
TAC must have dug deep for these guys, because their official youtube video has a lot of home photographs of the band because they still have the datestamp on them :lol  The amateur video production aside, these guys showed that amateur hour was long gone when they pick up their instruments.  This had a nice old school metal sound without sounding dated and old, probably due to the high register vocals.  This almost got into the 6, and probably would have in a previous round.
5/8

Obfuscation: Dead Congregation - Nigredo
This song was the heaviest and most brutal this round, possibly of the roulette so far.  Like others, this song suffers from being in a strong round, but I think the biggest difference between this song, and the two best of the round, are the quality of the harsh vocals.  If there was a best riff or solo parameter this round, this song might have won that.  Despite the low score, I’d still go out and see this band live and give their stuff a try.
2/8

senecadawg2: Dysrhythmia – Nutritional Facelift
The cool thing about instrumental songs is you can for the most part name them whatever you want.  This song built up some tension early on by not resolving to tonic, and ended with an angry flourish.  Lots of punch in this short little number.  Senecadawg has no fucks to give when given handicaps, apparently, because he isn’t letting them slow his pimp game. This song just had the misfortune of running into some very stiff competition this round, as it was the strongest round yet overall.  This might have been a 5 or 6 in some of the earlier rounds.
3/8

Nekov: Dragonland – Supernova
This song was originally rated low by me, but by the time I got around to scoring and trying to place parameters, I realized that original “meh” I gave this was no longer an appropriate grade.  With a name like “Dragonland”, I was fully expecting youtube to open up and show me pictures of giant wheels of cheese.  Or dragons.  Or knights.  Or wizards.  But this song was about as anti-dragons as you could get.  Maybe Dragonland was destroyed by the Supernova in the song, because the song was about a supernova – a man made one by detonating the sun according to the lyrics.  So, after I divorced my expectation of hearing a very bad Rhapsody of Fire knockoff, I found a fun, playful power metal song.
4/8

lonestar: Incura – Turning Blue
This song was more annoying than it was enjoyable.  I didn’t care much for the vocal style, and it was too repetitive.  The songs over reliance on some of the lyrics just got old really fast.  It was the first song to get a grade of “meh - -“.  Probably the biggest detraction about it was that I think it actually affected how I felt about the next song I listened to negatively.
1/8

jingle.boy: Presto Ballet – The Chemical Age
Well, here is another song to add to my “Chemistry” playlist, and yes I have a playlist of songs that are all related to chemistry.  This song was solid.  Nothing too flashy or big about this song, just a plain ol’ prog song that kept grabbing my attention without being flashy.  This song is like girl that know she’s good looking, but doesn’t go around flaunting it.  Easy to overlook, but once it has your attention it sticks around in your head.
6/8

Scorpion: Sigh – Amnesia
The bad news is that Scorp took a bit to send.  At least the song was worth the wait.  This was dark and jazzy, kind of like a toned down Ihsahn.  The instrumental part at the end was great, as it builds up layers and then starts to strip them away until the song slows down until ending with some random noise.  The harsh vocals weren’t too overpowering or over the top.  There were so many different parts to this song, but it still managed to be cohesive and not meandering all over the place.
8/8

Dark Castle: Gorod  – 5000 at the Funeral
This song started out very mellow and minimalist, before kicking into the neck breaking part of the song.  The one thing that really stood out was how crisp the tone and drums were.  Because I am not listening to the source material on youtube, grooveshark, and the like, I don’t dock ratings for what might be poor production because it could be compression caused by the rip, but it is real nice when you know that the artist didn’t brickwall the sound because the rip isn’t.  I really loved the tone of this song.  I liked that it mellowed out some of the harshness with airy instrumental parts.  This, as well as the Sigh song, is the type of song I would use to show someone that extreme metal isn’t all “RO-RO-ROOOOOOOOOOO”.  Good stuff, mang.
7/8

Round theme winner: Obfuscation

Ditto... I really don't know why Roulette hosts don't share ahead of time (unless they don't know themselves).  Really helps the planning process for the players.  For instance, way back in Nick's roulette, I sent Triumph in the opening round, then he had a theme of 3-member band.  Boy, Triumph would've been nice to send that round.

In my case, it is partly that I haven't thought of themes ahead of time, and the other part of it is that those who are handicapped might not be able to plan ahead.  The themes here haven't been anything very restrictive as a result of the second one, and grading against the theme is more for bonus points and tie breakers.

I am still waiting on the new handicap for TAC, but I wanted to get these up before Monday morning because if I don't I won't get to until late Monday.  I will PM TAC so he can prepare for one of two choices.

Round 4 – Stealth

The top six songs (4-8 points) in this round were all very close to each other, and I had a hard time trying to separate them, but I managed to do so, because I get paid the big bucks ($0) to do so.

Sacul: Last Crack – Wicked Sandbox
If someone told me Metallica lifted and embellished the secondary riff of this song and made it the famous Enter Sandman riff, I’d listen to that argument, because that’s what I’m hearing, and this song came out first.  Parts of this remind me of Soundgarden, which was my favorite band for a time in high school.  It has that early 90s hard rock/metal feel that is brings back some warm memories.
4/8

TAC: Zonata – Illusion of Madness
This song reminded me of so many other songs in places, in completely good ways.  I hear some Symphony X, some Blind Guardian, some Dimmu Borgir, and a few other things I can’t place that sound familiar.  My only wish would be to hear the song that isn’t being butchered by the rip to get around youtube’s copyright catchers, but I didn’t dock any points for that.  TAC is playing winning five card stud in a seven card stud game now folks.
6/8

Obfuscation: Massive Attack –  Angel
I have heard of Massive Attack, and I have seen this album on tons of lists of influential albums and best albums.  Different people like different kinds of food.  I like my music like I like my food: lots of bold flavors, spicy things, things with lots of different things going on.  This felt like bologna and iceburg lettuce on two slices of plain white bread.  There just wasn’t enough going on musically to keep me interested, which is a big reason I tend to gravitate towards busier music.
1/8

senecadawg2: Dynazty – Starlight
Seneca said this was a fun song, and he delivered on that promise.  This was another straight up power metal song, and it has all the elements of a good power metal song.  It was real hard to separate these power metal songs out, but the biggest difference between them all was the vocalist and the guitar tones.  Not that these were bad, as reflected by the score, this just fell a little flat compared to the others this round.
5/8

Nekov: Genius – There’s A Human
When I saw the lineup for this song, I was pretty excited.  Lots of people I know and trust musically.  When I saw it was a rock opera, I was worried because they can be very good (Streets, Tommy, SBEMAIL  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xASjOErPSdI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xASjOErPSdI) ), or they can be very, very bad.  Well, this one was not at either extreme, but it did feature a cringe inducing chorus, which may have worked better in the context of the album, but alone as a track, that chorus was some rancid cheese – and I don’t really mind good cheese.
3/8

jingle.boy: Mob Rules – The Oswald Files: The Dead Man’s Face Chapter V
I’m not sure if jingle is trying to play to my interest in the JFK assassination with this song, or it is just a coincidence.  Also, I can’t be the only person who immediately doesn’t think of Black Sabbath when they hear the name “Mob Rules”, and I don’t even own that album.  Anyway, I know poor jingle must be getting frustrated at my love/hate relationship with power metal.  This song lies much closer to the love end of that spectrum.  While I don’t mind traditional power metal, I really like when bands take the power metal sound and have songs about things other than fire and fantasy themes.  I will probably end up buying this album just because of the multipart song about Oswald that probably won’t suck if this song is any indication.
7/8

lonestar: Odd Dimension – Light Speed Journey
If there is anything I find more hit or miss than power metal, it is Italian power metal.  I seem to be the one person who is capable of liking power metal who doesn’t care for Mind Key and Soul Secret.  TAC found a hit with Eldritch earlier though, so it isn’t impossible to find an IPM band I might like.  So it was with apprehension that I opened lonestar’s incorrectly linked song the first time, his performance up to this point not withstanding :)  As I started listening, I realized this wasn’t sucking.  No…this was beyond not sucking, this was good.  Damned good.  The guitars were bright, crisp, and powerful, as was everything else.  Dare I say, round winner.
8/8

Scorpion: Persefone – Truth Inside The Shades
While over half the people decided to go power metal this round, Scorp decided to go back to the well that worked for him last round, sticking to subgenres of death metal.  I think calling this band late 90s Opeth’s cousin would be a fair comparison, different enough in the harsh vocals to not warrant the sibling connection, but similar enough to say that fans of Opeth probably would like this as well.  Also, this is one of the few bands you can get into from Andorra, regardless of the genre.
6/8

Dark Castle: Haim – Forever
I knew DC had a part of him that likes poppy music, and was just wondering when it was going to turn up in my roulette.  My MO for listening to these is to usually open it in another tab, and not watch the video.  With a very 80s sounding intro and the band name of “Haim”, I was starting to expect this to be a Corey Haim tribute band :lol  For poppy music, this was actually good.  I might not ever reach out to listen to this, but I don’t think I would complain about having it imposed on me occasionally, and I certainly wouldn’t argue that they are no talent hacks riding their good looks and a strong push from a record company.  These girls can sing.  The vocals were the stand out of this song, beefing up a rather plain accompaniment.  This song isn’t bad, and I would be happy if bands like this started taking over top 40 and replacing the manufactured crap, but this type of music just really isn’t my thing.

lonestar: Odd Dimension – Light Speed Journey
8/8

I used this very song in Kirk's roulette a couple of years ago. Love Odd Dimension. Would've likely used them in this roulette but they don't fit any of the handicaps.

This round was very tough to judge.

Round 5 – Surprise

Sacul: Ulver – I Troldskog Faren Vild
I’ve been sent Ulver twice in previous roulettes and I remember being underwhelmed by it, so I wasn’t too enthused when I saw Ulver again, even though I know their career has covered a lot of ground.  After doing a little research, It seems that the early Ulver would interest me the most, and that’s where this song comes from, and it looks like my research is right, because I do like this song much more than the other Ulver songs I’ve heard.  It’s dark but has a bit of energy to it, but the sound is crisp and I’m guessing well produced based on the quality of this clip.
7/8

TAC: Jerusalem – Beyond the Grave
For being an early 70s hard rock song, this song is all over the place.  The song starts with a section reminiscent of the Canterbury Scene, which later gets replaced with a darker, Black Sabbeth-esque guitar tone, and later a guitar solo in a Phrygian dominant scale, giving that part a very middle-eastern feel, and that is all in the first 3 minutes.  This song really grew on me the more time I had to appreciate it.  It is a shame this band only released one album, because as Ian Gillan said, while there is some rawness in their sound, there is a ton of potential.
6/8

Obfuscation: Maximum the Hormone – Alien
When this song started, I was thinking, “Aaaaannnnd we’re back on track.”  Then about two minutes into the song I had to make sure another one hadn’t started.  The band might be called Maximum the Hormone, but it might as well be called Maximum the Japan, because as a whole this was just one weird ass song and video.  The first half is :metal and balls out brutal.  Had me hook line and sinker.  Then pretty much halfway through the song, what in the actual fuck?  Japan happened, that’s what.  I think the video is worth sharing, because the video, while not judged, is pretty much required viewing if you love crazy Japanese stuff.  If the first half of this song is par for the course for this band, I’m interested.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdwT5JlH8gM  (warning, this will get stuck in your head)
3/8

senecadawg2: Journey – Kohoutek
Neil Schon is a beast on guitar, I’ve known that for a while.  This is the second pre-Perry Journey song I’ve heard, the other one I remember enjoying a lot, and I checked to make sure it wasn’t this one.  This song takes two minutes to get going, but when it does with that simple, but awesome buzzing riff, it takes no prisoners.  At some point I’m going to get these old Journey albums.  Again, score not reflective of how much I actually liked the song.
4/8

Nekov: Von Hertzen Brothers – Bring Out The Snakes
This would have won the round theme if it weren’t for the schizo song Obfuscation sent.  I got a Von Hertzen Bros. song in a previous roulette, and remember not being very wowed by it.  I’m going to guess that the first half of this song isn’t typical for the band, and it was just them being goofy.  The second half of this song was more interesting than the last VHB song I got, so at least there is improvement on that front.  I’m not sure if this is a real song, or just a goofy song that bands sometimes put at the end of an album.  This song just ran into a literal buzz saw of death this round.  I’m guessing this song was sent for the round theme, but for non-roulette purposes I would like to see what you think their best song is, because maybe it’s time for me to give this fake boy band another shot (it sounds like a boy band for hormonal teenage girls, you can’t deny that).
1/8

jingle.boy: Beautiful Sin – Lost
Well folks, Nanook of the North has awakened.  I know of this singer from her work with Ayreon and Flaming Row, but didn’t even know what band she came from.  That has now been answered.  This song was enough to convince me to put this on my next amazon order.  This song got in my head like a Ceti eel on my first listen and stayed in front over several listens.
8/8

lonestar: The Hive-Mind– Sparks
Probably this songs biggest problem is that it was less memorable than the other instrumental this round.  It’s not bad at all, but hours later I can still remember what the Journey song sounded like, whereas this song isn’t sticking in my mind.   Again, this was quite enjoyable, but it just ran into very tough competition this round.
2/8

Scorpion: Ensiferum – Lai Lai Hei
Folk metal…he shoots he scores.  With most folk metal, I’m listening more for the music than the lyrics, as the lyrical themes can be hit or miss.  A big chorus helps, and that’s what this song has in “LAI LAI HEI!”.  Overall, a fun romp through the metal forest.
6/8

Dark Castle: Altar of Plagues – God Alone
Damn, that opening riff is jarring, creating a ton of tension right off the bat.  If panic attacks had a soundtrack, this would one of the first songs on it.  Much like DC’s other successful songs, it is dark, loud, and abrasive as 60 grit sandpaper, yet it has a cohesive sound that works.
5/8
Round theme winner: Obfuscation

I'll take a long song (12+ minutes) or a suite, or a shorter doing if it is really epic sounding, but that option is more of an out for someone who doesn't have a long song that I don't already know.

Thanks for the email, I really need to listen to some snippets from the album to pick a song, and to see the song title. If I'm not too tired when I get home I'll send.

My handicap in this round was a song pre 1978. I think I sent it so long ago, it was actually a current song!!

Round 6 – Spicy

Sacul: Throne of Chaos – The Window
After a slow start, I think Sacul is starting to hone in on my taste.  This song has some really nice instrumental parts, and the singer fits the music well.  He doesn’t seem to fit into some of the known singer archetypes and no one is going to confuse him for JLB, Bruce Dickenson, or Russell Allen, but he seems to know what he can do and doesn’t do, which is why his voice seemed to stick out.  The main riff was very catchy, and the mellow middle section had a slight Caribbean feel.
7/8

TAC: Lucifer’s Friend  – Ride The Sky
Just finding something that fit your handicaps was really good.  To find something that was pretty cool from before 1978 and featured an organ and French horn…mighty damn impressive.  I loved how the horn was used too.  I’m surprised I haven’t heard of these guys influencing other bands, because it certainly seemed like they were doing a lot of interesting things back in 1970.   This score is more a result of ranking songs than how much I enjoyed it.
2/8

Obfuscation: Rammstein – Te Quiero Puta!
Translation: I love you whore!  Back when I was in high school and starting college, I had two Rammstein albums (Herzeleid and Sehnsucht), and just assumed they made German industrial metal ever since then.  Then in my second roulette Metty sent me a Rammstein song that felt like it was heavily influence by surfer music, which was quite a surprise.  This song had a Latin feel beyond the Spanish title, so I my official stance is I have no idea what these guys did beyond those two albums, and they are clearly a stronger band than their gimmick laden persona suggests.  The one part that will generally be a mystery is their songwriting, because I don’t speak German, but I respect the hell out of them for sticking to their roots and writing their songs in German.
3/8

senecadawg2: Byzantine – Jeremiad
If White Zombie and Pantera had baby, and it was raised by Mikael Akerfeld, this would be the result.  It was heavy, groovy, and had maybe the best guitar solo of the round.  Black_floyd had asked me to check them out before, and I never got around to it.  I’m going to have to change that post haste.
6/8

Nekov: The Contortionist  – Language I: Intuition
This song from the first listen had pole position this round, and it never gave it up.  The song started with a very mellow airy intro and started to build up, and right when it seemed like it was going to boil over into some aggressive riff, it suddenly ended.  I think the song is more than the sum of its parts, because while I can’t specifically say what I loved about it, I thoroughly enjoyed it when I listened to it.
8/8

jingle.boy: Glass Mind – Haunting Regrets
This song and lonestar’s were real close, and initially these were switched, but while I think musically they were neck and neck, Profusion had just a slight edge in the vocals department.  But another solid entry by jingle.whiney.
5/8

lonestar: Profusion – Dedalus Falling
Another solid prog metal entry from lonestar.  The strength of this song is the chorus, which is catchy.  There is a nice instrumental section in there towards the end, because all prog songs must be at least 7 minutes.
6/8

Scorpion: Tyr – Hear The Heathen Call
Another folk metal entry from Scorpion.  If it works, might as well stick to it.  The strength of this song is the pre-chorus, which shifts up an octave and grabs your attention, whether you want to give it or not.
4/8

Dark Castle: Red Hot Chili Peppers – Sir Psycho Sexy
I probably should have DQ’ed this song because I used to own this album…on cassette tape, but that probably also gives you an idea of how long it has been since I heard this song.  When I was a kid I thought 8 minutes was entirely too long for a song :lol  This song is just RHCP being silly and overly sexual.  The lyrics are so over the top all you can really do is smile and laugh because I don’t think the song is meant to be taken seriously.  NOW SUCK MY DICK!  This song is what it is;  a funny song that in the second half turns into a groovy romp.  Songs like this have me wanting to see Flea take a crack at something like prog because I think he’d slay it.  Time being what it is…20 years ago I thought this was funny and cool, now it’s just not my thing.
1/8

Round theme winner: Dark Castle

Round 7 – Cold
Sorry for the lack of write-ups.  I promise you I have a really good reason, but it is not one I’m going to disclose, but it has nothing to do with the quality of the songs.  Aside from one song, this was the strongest bottom of the round to date.
Sacul:  Obsidian Kingdom – Oncoming Dark/Through The Glass/Cinnamon Balls    7/8
TAC:  Shooting Star – Last Chance  2/8
Obfuscation: Immortal Technique – Dance With The Devil
This content of this song was really uncomfortable.  I don’t really care for rap.  I don’t relate to most of it.  My personality, lifestyle, and upbringing are pretty much the antithesis of most rap songs.  Call me cold, but I don’t want to hear about gang-banging, drug dealing, and life in the hood, even when it is presented like it is in this song where it is not glorified, but vilified.  The guy can rap.  I even liked the simple, minimalist music that was underneath it.  If someone told me Immortal Technique was their favorite musician, just based on this song I could easily respect that decision.  But I still can’t get into rap.  I don’t relate to it lyrically, even when the musical part isn’t drek.
1/8

senecadawg2: Gallowbriad – Stone of Rememberance  8/8
Nekov:  Pure Reason Revolution – The Twyncyn / Trembling Willows  6/8
jingle.boy: Kamelot – The Haunting (live)  4/8
lonestar: Prospekt – The Great Awakening 3/8
Scorpion: Caladan Brood – Wild Autumn Wind 5/8
Dark Castle:  The Atlas Moth – Coffin Varnish 7/8

Round theme winner: Dark Castle

I was sure you'd like that toolish sound the song has (I'm assuming that's why you liked it)

Also this
Also, almost goes without saying but I feel like it should be said regardless- I hope everything is going alright with you.

Will send later today

Send parameters.  No one is handicapped at this point too.

Ooo man Immortal Technique. That song gives me the chills.

Yeah, that song was really uncomfortable at the end.  As far as rap goes, it was good, I just can't relate to that, living in the ghettoes of academia.

This was sorta the reaction I was expecting but I was just rolling the dice in this roulette and seeing the what the reaction would be.

Do you have an email that I can send to? The song I want to send isn't on YouTube.

Goes without saying, but hang in pal.  You always got friends here.  And awesome music always gets the mind in a different (better) place.  You got lots of it this round!

I hope everything's ok.

Me too

Perhaps we should just call the results final, as they stand in the public rankings  ;)

Nope, gotta finish or it doesn't count as a legit roulette win. You'd be at 8 with an '*' after it.

I think I've actually only won 6, but thanks for the bump  :-*

Ah, it's Zander with 7, and he's not really active anymore. So with a two win cushion, plus the inevitable 'w' in Ruslan's roulette, I think I can let you have this one, with an asterisk of course.

Don't forget there's hidden points. Someone else might be the real winner

Yeah I know, I was just being a jackass. I suspect a few people have more secret points than me.

I'll get to the last round soon.

To fill those in who don't know.  There was an incident at work in December that opened some old wounds and left me a head case.  On the outside, I seem fine.  My mind however is fucked and isn't moving on.  I thought I would be past it by the holidays, but I'm not, and now that the semester is in full swing it is really hard for me to work in my office now because I'm always on mental alert.  This means I have to take work home all the time, and working from home means staying away from the computer, lest I slack off.

I'm sorry to hear that doc. I really hope you can get through this bad situation and come out without damage. Don't mind us here, focus on the important things
