Title: Tyrias' Roulette v. THE FINAL RESULTS
Post by: Tyrias on August 02, 2014, 04:08:50 AM
Welcome to my first Roulette everyone! Before I say anything else about the Roulette, I think I should introduce myself, since I haven’t been the most regular poster on here. ( despite lurking all the time ;) ) Since ? is in his final round now, I figured it would be okay to start lokking for participants  .
I’m 20 years old, live in Austria and study economics. Currently I’m doing an internship and find myself with plenty of free time at my hands, so I can safely promise the pace of this Roulette won’t be a problem. Also, please forgive any mistakes, I haven’t really actively practiced my English skills over the last year ;) .

My music tastes are all over the place, so I’m rather sure anyone who would like to play will find plenty of stuff to send  ;D .

So, here come…

THE RULES:
Every participant sends one song for each round and I score every song with a maximum of 6 points.

THE ROUNDS:
I’m going to go with pretty simple themes so you have a lot of music to choose from, but I’m not a big fan of open rounds, so there’s probably going to be a theme for every round.

SIGNING UP:
The first 8 people to post in this thread are in ;). If we don’t have 8 people by the time ? finishes his Roulette, we’ll start anyway  :P .

HOW TO SEND:
I prefer spotify links, but generally I’m fine with everything as long as the quality is good  :D . Just PM me the link and the song, and it should work out fine.

BANNED ARTISTS:
Not every band I have ever heard of is on that list, but those are all artists I listen to fairly regularly and like or love.

Title: Re: Tyrias' Roulette v. WHO IS THIS GUY? I'll take 1 more participant!
Post by: Tyrias on August 04, 2014, 10:50:53 AM
Well, since no one else has signed up for 2 days now, I figured I'd just post Round 1 Results. If anyone still wants to join after this, they can just resend the first round and I'll score their song with the next update  ;) .

Before I post up results, I will explain my point system a bit. I figured that sending one terrible song shouldn't mean your chances at this roulette are over, so I designed my point system that getting 0 points here would get you something between 0-3 points if I'd ranked the songs out of 10 points. 0,5 points would mean something between 3 and 5 points if rated out of 10. TO give you a clear reference, here is what I had in mind for each number of points:

0 points - I never want to hear this song again.
1 points - I won’t mind this song if it’s in the background, but don’t really want to listen to it otherwise.
2 points- okay
3 points- liked it
4 points- really liked it
5 points- awesome song
6 points- perfect in every way possible

So if you only get 3 points ot of 6, that's actually still really good  ::).

So, the results:

senecadawg2: Susanne Sundfør - The Silicone Veil - Live at Skavlan 05-10-2012  (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ze9bcegcmW8)
This song really surprised me on first listen, I wasn't really expecting something so calm. Nevertheless, this song was just amazing vom start to finish. Loved the way it built up from a calm start to this (by comparison) epic ending. Also, her voice is just gorgeous and takes the song up another step. I'm definetely checking out more music from her  :tup
5,5 / 6 points

Lucien: Frost* - Toys (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJk61r6iUX8)
This song sounds like a prog metal band doing pop for once. I wasn't completely sold on the result on first listen, but it grew on me with each time I listened to it. The last two times I couldn't help smiling when the song started and shaking my head to the beat  ;D . Also, I could definetely play this at a party with my friends without getting many weird looks, so props for that  :lol .
4,5 / 6 points

Sacul: Infected Mushroom - becoming insane (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kipooHI1NGc)
I actually knew this song, but I had only listened to it one or two times so I let it pass. This is definetely out of my usual genre pallette, like a Trance track with some Spanish guitar and rock riffs thrown into the mix... The song is definetely very fun to listen to and just hop around the room like you're becoming insane (get the pun  ?). However, i felt it went on a bit too long for it's own good and cutting a minute or two would have added a point or two to the score ;).
3 / 6 points

adace: Enslaved-Fusion Of Sense And Earth (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EC6gds4QVQE)
Another song that grew on me a lot over consecutive listens. The screams at the beginning really out me off at first, and it took me a while to see those great riffs underneath. Really, every riff on this song is excellent, but the solo and those higher pitched growls/screams at the beginning were'nt really my cup of tea. By contrast, I enjoyed the low growls towards the end, a shame they were mixed so low.
Also, if I played this at a party my friends would probably start to question my sanity , but never mind that :lol  :metal
3,5/6 points

Tom Bombadil: David Bowie - Thursday's Child (Spotify link:  spotify:track:6aAVlNsl1ND24oy33Cq9Sb)
Literally 10 seconds after I first started listening to this song I had  a picture in my head: It's 4 a.m., most people are already home and only a few still left, there are a few couples on the dancefloor hugging each other/making out and some people just sitting around and singing along drunkenly...  :lol
Luckily, I really like this feeling. Great song, but it didn't quite blow me away :D.
4 / 6  points

lonestar: Boston - Smokin' (spotifly link: https://play.spotify.com/track/37neU3YM4yysrailQPlMl6 )
I'd never heard of this song before you sent it to me, despite it being so popular.. I guess I need to brush up my knowledge of pre-90s music .
It's a really cool rocking tune, the main riff should get anyone who likes rock  moving along, and the solo section is quite good as well. Especially love the keyboards starting at 2:45, but those 2 quiet parts at 3:30 really sound out of place. Also, the production sounds pretty dated (which is of course obvious since it's an old song), I think the drums just lack a bit of punch that would have raised the song to another level. Still, solid submission  :tup
3,5 / 6 points

Shadow Ninja 2.0: Voyager - She Takes Me (Into The Morning Light) (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxdXmfKySHI)
Stilistically, this is pretty close to the Frost* song, unfortunately the song just doesn't do quite as much for me. It has a really great and catchy chorus that's gonna be stuck in my head for a while but the verses just don't quite do it for me for some reason...
3 / 6 points

So, we have a first ranking:

senecadawg2        5,5
Lucien                    4,5
Tom Bombadil        4
lonestar                 3,5
adace                    3,5
Shadow Ninja 2.0  3
Sacul                     3

I liked each song you sent me, so keep up the good work  :tup .

Round 2 theme is gonna be: Send me something dark. Interpret that as you will  .

(And if anyone's wondering, yes, the next round is gonna be something "bright"  :o )

So; Round 2 Results. It's pretty late already, so I'm going to keep my write ups short (and I will have no time to post until wednesday, so I have to do it today  )

Results:
Shadow Ninja 2.0: Dir en grey - reiketsu nariseba

First listen: wtf?
Over multiple listens I've grown to like this tune quite a bit though. It's still really all over the place, and the vocals range from bark-like sounds to high pitched screams, but it somehow ... fits.
3/6 points

Sacul: Dead Can Dance - Children Of The Sun
This is quite a dark tune and I liked it on first listen. It has a slightly doomy feeling and it feels a bit like music from the 80s, but with modern production ;) . Ideal music to put on at nightime, would listen again. Especially liked the orchestral parts near the end  :tup
4,5/6 points

Tom Bombadil: A Perfect Circle- The Outsider
Starts of with a really nice melody, than it becomes quite Tool-y, but in a more concise and to the point way than Tool ever managed to be. Since their songs being too long as always my biggest problem with Tool, this is quite a step up and a great tune! Also, Maynards vocal performance is great  :tup.
4,5/6 points

senecadawg2: Dir en Grey- "Vinushka"
Starts off awesome, but somewhere along it's 9 minutes this song just loses me. However, there are awesome parts all over the song that drag me back in, even though I still think it could have been a bit shorterwithout losing anything- It's also not so ridiculously over the top heavy as the other Dir En Grey song sent to me this round, another plus point  :D .
4,5/6points

lonestar: IQ - The Road of Bones

So, I honestly thought I was done with discovering great new Prog music and moved to other genres, but this convinces me I have at least one more band to check out ;D. Seriously, everything from the calm start, over that awesome bassline to that heavy end is fantastic. Great send  :tup Reminds me of Porcupine Tree's FOABP quite a bit, and that's in my top 5 albums ever, soo..... ;)
6/6 points

Lucien: Dmitri Shostakovich - Symphony 5, Finale
I've always liked classical music when we had it in music lessons in school. I've heard of Shostakovich before and this is a great piece of music. Loved the clever dissonances and dynamic contrasts, along with some beautiful melodies  ;D.
5/6 points

adace: Draconian - Seasons Apart
Stellar song! Probably the most "normal" song, as in closest to my normal listning habits, I got this round. The riffs were great, the female singer was great and the growls were fantastic as well! Reminded me a bit off Ghost Reveries, but with female vocals and a bit more accessible  :metal
5,5/6 points
senecadawg2        10
Lucien                    9,5
lonestar                 9,5
adace                    9
Tom Bombadil        8,5
Sacul                     7,5
Shadow Ninja 2.0  6

Overall, great round! As I said before, Round 3 Theme is to send me something bright!

Oh, you LIKE classical music? That makes this much, much easier.  ;D
Well, being from Austria I'm at least bound to be aware of its existence  ;). We have at least 8 years of compulsory music lessons, and classical music is usually a big part of it.
There are still lots of students who find it immensely boring, though :P .

Glad you sort of enjoyed the dir en grey song. I know it can be a lot to swallow, but I still enjoy it a lot.

I sent a true classic for this next round.
I think the rating for both Dir En Grey songs could have been higher if I'd given myself a few weeks to get used to their style. But I'm kinda leaning towards taking no more than a week for one round, so there you go ::).

Also, since lonestar asked in his PM: Any song length is fine, but keep in mind that I also have to find time to listen to the songs. If everyone starts sending me 20 minute songs all the time, Rounds are going to take a lot longer.

Also, please try getting everything in within the next 24 hours or so, so that I can start listening tomorrow. No time today, since I'm going to see The National .

So, Round 3 Results are ready ;).

senecadawg2: Rush- "La Vila Strangiato"

I've actually listened to the latest Rush album and quite liked it, but I never got back to checking them out more thoroughly. Hence they aren't on the banned list ;). I actually quite liked this song, and now, listening for the 5th time, I realise it's an instrumental :rollin .Which is good, since I never particularly liked Rush's vocalist. Anyway, the song has some great riffs and melodies, with some-not-quite-as-good sections thrown in. The end feels a bit sudden as well. But, as a whole, I enjoyed this song
4/6

Shadow Ninja 2.0: Jon Gomm - Passionflower

So this was definetely my favourite song this round. The melodies and rhythms, as well as the singing are fantastic. The first time I watched the video I was literally sitting in front of my computer with my mouth wide open, I never would have thought you could do this much with just one guitar :omg:. And then he just plays the main melody with the fucking tuners.  :omg: At times, I would have thought there were 3 people playing simultaneously, if I hadn't watched the video.
5,5/6

Sacul: Flying Colors-The Storm

So, the first of 2 Flying Colors songs I got this round. I actually meant to check them out some time ago, but never got around to it. Compared to the other song, this one seemed a lot more like a 'standard-upbeat-rock-song' which is of course not necessarily a bad thing ;). Still, I liked this one slightly less than the "Kayla". Which is not to say that I didn't, it was just not quite as good.
4/6 points

Tom Bombadil: Flying Colors - Kayla

Really like the acoustic melody, it's a shame they didn't explore that more. The rest of the song is great as well, though, I especially liked the catchy and happy chorus. All in all, this was a really nice, happy rock tune and I don't really know what else to say about it ;D.
4,5/6

lonestar: Spock's Beard - Waiting For Me
I have a somewhat hard time rating this song because, like in many long songs, there are some fantastic parts and some not-so-fantastc moments. Most instrumental parts are fantastic, but the parts with singing are somewhat lacking, mostly because I don't like the singer's voice. It seems like a mix between a normal prog vocalist and a usual pop vocalist, and something about it just rubs me the wrong way... The guitar parts (and the guitar tone) are stellar, though  :metal. There are also a few rather sudden mood changes that put me off somewhat on first listen.
So, we have 2/6 for vocals and 5/6 for instrumental parts, which makes it a total of....
3,5/6

Lucien: Rush-Marathon

Another Rush song :) !
As always with Rush, the vocals are the weakest part of the song. Other than that, I really liked how they pulled off the contrast between the mostly quirky bass and drums and the rather calm and epic guitar track. The melodies were great as well!
4,5/6

adace: Hammock - Breathturn
Post-rock/ambient, if done right, is one of my favourite genres. I loved the echo-y guitars and vocals and.... just about any instrument , really  :lol. This is a fantastic song to listen to when you're just relaxing and dreaming about life and stuff, and it was definetely the "brightest" track I got this round (at least in my interpretation ;) ).
5/6

So, after 3 rounds we have the following standings:
senecadawg2        14
Lucien                    14
adace                    14
lonestar                 13
Tom Bombadil        13
Sacul                     11,5
Shadow Ninja 2.0  11,5

So we now have a 3-way-tie for first place, 2 players on second rank , and 2 players on 3rd rank :o. This wasn't really intentional, but oh well, it keeps things interesting, doesn't it ;). Anyone still has chances, since there are only 2,5 points between first and last place, so do you best ! :tup

Round 4: I just realised I at least half of the songs (more like two thirds) I got so far were either prog or metal. Which is kind of obvious, since this is a board for a prog-metal band :P. Still, for Round 4 I wan't you to send something that's neither prog nor metal (preferably not rock as well, but I don't know much about your music libraries, so just send something rockish if you can't think of anything else that's decent ;) ). Anything else is fine!

4/6 still means I really liked la vila strangiato ;). Also, it's probably easier to score high with a song out of a genre that I'm not that familiar with. First, I don't have so much to compare it to. 2nd, it feels fresher for the first few listens
Of course, it could also backfire drastically if it turns out I HATE the genre :lol

La Villa Strangiato is actually one of my least favorite Rush songs. It's like The Dance of Eternity for Rush.

Neither prog nor metal/rock? Challenge accepted :coolio. Btw, do you like electronic music?

Electronic music is fine ;). Bring it on :hat

And, to be fair, I like The Villa Strangiato far better than TDOE. TDOE would probably have been a 2,5/6... Some good parts, but mostly just too wanky by far :P

So, first, because this was a rather quick round, I withhold the right to add points to songs until the next round. Just in case something grows on me... But next chance for me to post something is on monday, and that's a bit late for my taste  :P. I think this was a difficult round for some of you, and from now on I won't be having limitations on genres.

So, here are the results:

lonestar: Sparks - The Hive-Mind

You needn't have worried so much ;) . While this wasn't perfect, it was a very nice jazz/funk instrumental (I guess those two genres sum it up the best.) I don't have much experience with this kind of music, but I might have to expand my musical horizon...
4/6 points

Sacul: Burial: Raver (Hyperdub 2007)
This was a very interesting piece of electronic music. The beat is simple but sounds great, I especially like this wobbly bass in the background. I like the glockenspiel and keyboard melodies, but the vocals are somewhat of a turnoff. They are a bit too whiny for my taste. Also, cutting about a minute of the song would have benefitted it as well. All in all, that's...
3,5/6 points

adace: Boards of Canada - Dayvan Cowboy
I actually have two albums by Boards of Canada at home, but I never listened to them enough to judge them properly... Anyway, this was a cool and relaxing piece of ambient music, and I'll definetely put on more of their music after this Roulette is over. It wasn't as good as that Hammock song you sent me last round, though.
4/6 points

Tom Bombadil: Reel Big Fish - Sell Out
I didn't even know a genre called ska existed until you sent me this song :lol. Anyway, this is a very fun song both musically and lyrically, especially liked the heavy use of trumpets. It had me dancing around the room as well, right now I'm having a pretty hard time staying put in front of my computer and not dancing away  :metal .
4,5/6 points

Shadow Ninja 2.0: Second Person - Gone Fishing
I've always had a faible for trip hop music, and this song is no exception. Pretty much everything about this song is great, loved the atmosphere, the beat, the vocals, the chorus, the bridge... I'Ve found another band I need to check out ;D
5,5/6 points

Lucien: Lucien - Cave Of Ghosts
So; I wasn't really expecting someone to send his own music, and I definetely wasn't expecting it to be classical music (at least sort of), but this was awesome. It feels pretty drone-y alltogether, but there are some really cool melodies thrown in and reprised. The overall atmosphere is really bleak, but in a good way and in the end there is an awesome beautiful climax. Great song  ;D
5.5/6 points

senecadawg2: Clint Mansell - Death is the Road to Awe

Another awesome classical piece (well, actually it's a soundtrack...). Dramatic music with a big climax has always been fantastic for me, and this one has not just one but three (!!!) climaxes! :o IT starts of  very calm with piano, and then some awesome strings enter and it builds and builds and builds... I really need to see this film and listen to the rest of the soundtrack!
6/6 points

So, standings after round 4:
senecadawg2        20
Lucien                    19,5
adace                    18
Tom Bombadil        17,5
lonestar                 17
Shadow Ninja 2.0  17
Sacul                     15

senecadawg2 retakes his lead, but is closely followed by Lucien! Since we're only about halfway through now, everyone still has a chance!   ;)

Round 5: Send me something with an awesome climax!

So, round 5 results. Pretty diverse round, I was expecting a lot more samey stuff, but I'm glad most of you sent something not that obvious :tup.

Shadow Ninja 2.0: Widower by The Dillinger Escape Plan

This was a really weird track. Starts off with ambient noises, then becomes kind of classical with an atonal influence, then some really cool stuff I can't really describe and some really heavy shit to top it of. Followed by another piano section and a reprise of the louder parts. Sounds like it's never going to work out, but somehow they manage to pull it off splendidly. Really cool entry, and definetely a worthy climax  :tup.
4,5/6 points

senecadawg2: Damien Rice - 9 Crimes
Oh, I love me some singer/songwriter stuff. This is a really sad, very laid-back ballad with a bit of a build up thrown in. Both the male and the female singer's voice fit the song perfectly, and the strings that kick in about halfway through are absolutely amazing. I'll definetely be checking out more of Damien Rice, this is right up my alley ;D.
5,5/6 points

lonestar: Absolute Priority - Dead Man Walkin'
I've always said that italian singers always sound like they are singing a love song, and this is no exception... even though he is actually singing about a serial killer waiting to die :lol . Anyway, this song is quite fantastic. Starts off acoustically with some beautiful melodies, and somewhere around the 3-minute-mark the whole band kicks in and there's an awesome guitar solo. I do however feel that the outro could have been a bit shorter. It's still great, but... yeah.
5/6 points

Lucien: Disney's Fantasia 2000: Firebird Suite
For some reason, the beginning of this song reminds me of Harry Potter :lol. Anyway, this meanders far too long before anything interesting happens. When it gets louder though, it's really great. Unfortunately, that means it's just good overall.
3/6 points

Tom Bombadil: Beyond The Bridge - Where The Earth And Sky Meet

This is a very atmospheric song with some great guitar work. It's a great listen when you are just lying around relaxing and has some really cool melodies. I don't really have anything else to say, but I definetely liked it :tup.
4/6 points

adace: Isis - Panopticon - 4 - Wills Dissolve

I was expecting lots of post-rock/metal this round, but for some reason you were the only one who met those expectations. ;) This song has a really cool build-up with some really strong riffs/melodies and reminds me of Russian Circles a bit (except for the vocals of course). Never quite manages to blow me away, though...
4/6 points

Sacul: David Maxim Micic - Where Is Now?
This is right up my alley. Sounds a bit like Devin Townsend, but not so much that I would call it derivative. Plus, it's better than anything recent I've heard of Devin (I'm not oe of his greatest admirers, so I haven't exactly listened to every album of his, but you get the jist ;) ). If I had to describe this song in one word it would be: Epic!
5/6 points

adace                      22
Tom Bombadil          21,5
lonestar                  22
Shadow Ninja 2.0   21,5
Sacul                       20

Round 6 theme: Send me something epic . Keep in mind that epic doesn't necessarily have to mean "long", a 4 minute song can be epic as fuck if done right ;) . Also, just in case someone wants to go overboard with this; I'm setting a time limit: 18:43 minutes at maximum. (inspired by lonestars "best of the epics" thread  ::) )

Post by: Tyrias on September 05, 2014, 01:16:09 PM
Rejoice, after a long wait results are here! I'm sorry it took so long, but in my defense, I had about twice as much music to listen to as in previous rounds because there was exactly one song under 10 minutes :lol.

So, here come the result
Shadow Ninja 2.0: Caladan Brood - Wild Autumn Wind
Apparently even the genre tag of this song has "Epic" in it, so I guess it was a perfect send for this round ::) . This is some kind of Atmospheric Black Metal with Folk influences (at least it sounded kinda folky at times). In a way this reminds me off Agalloch's Ashes Against The Grain, just slower music, worse production and a bit less diversity; replace that with some orchestral epicness and you've pretty much got the sound of this song down. It falls a bit short of AAtG's greatness, but nevertheless it is a pretty epic and likeable tune.
4/6 points

Lucien: Tchaikovsky - Swan Lake, Act 4 - No.29 Scène Finale

This video feels like it starts one and a half minutes early, that part until 1:20 totally sounds like the ending of a previous movement ::). It's still awesome, but feels kinda tacked on. I can totally see why you sent this, it's about as epic as you can get with classical music, and it pulls of the epicness splendidly. Lots of huge melodies, with some calmer interludes that make for awesome dynamics and keep you attention throughout the whole piece.  :tup
5/6 points

lonestar: The Omega Experiment - Stimulus
Listening to this in a playlist right after Tchaikovsky sure feels weird :lol. Apart from that; I'm not sure what to think of this track. There are awesome parts all over the song, but it feels like a chaotic mess. No part really has time to shine and drowns in all the stuff that is going on. As someone who's not that fond of chaos in music that unfortunately means that this song fell kinda flat for me...
2,5/6 points

Sacul: Nils Frahm - Toilet Brushes - More (Live in London)

This was fantastic! This whole song feels more like an improvisation than a composed song, and it's really repetitive, but somehow it works splendidly. Despite its 15 minutes running time I never once lost interest in this song and it kept me thoroughly entertained all the time. Also, the improvisation with Olafur Arnalds in the related videos is absolutely beautiful.
5,5/6 points

senecadawg2: Ludovico Einaudi - Oltremare
This was a surprisingly relaxing song/solo piano piece. Also, I didn't quite get a "Sea of progressive rock and metal", unless you consider 2 out of 7 songs a lot ;D . Anyway, I really liked this, but I have one qualm: If I really try to focus on the piece it's just a tad to long and if I listen to it as background music it takes too much attention away from what I'm doing. I imagine this could be great as background music while daydreaming, but I've been to busy lately to daydream ::) .
4,5/6 points

Tom Bombadil: Redemption - Love Kill Us All / Life in One Day

This was a pretty standard prog metal song, but then I wouldn't be on this forum if I didn't like Prog and Metal. I like the calm intro (despite that cheesy keyboard sound), but the song really kicks of when it gets loud and epic. Some really cool riffs, great solos that are more than just shredding, and I also like the singer's voice quite a lot. Good one :tup
5/6 points

adace: Saor - Pillars of the Earth

This was really similar to the song Shadow Ninja sent. The Folk influences were turned up a notch, but in terms of overall sound and atmosphere it was just a bit more trashy and faster. The production sucks (especially the guitars), but I really like the music. The acoustic interludes provide a nice and needed break from all the blast beatsm screaming and fast guitars. Cool song!
4,5/6 points

Standings:
senecadawg2          30
Lucien                      27,5

Shadow Ninja 2.0   25,5
Sacul                       25,5
lonestar                  24,5

Round 7 Theme: In response to the epic last round, send m something that is calm, subtle, relaxing, .... And most definetely not epic :o (Can be a ballad, something ambient or anything else really but try to keep loud parts to a minimum.

Also, so you can all prepare: Round 8 is going to be the last one and it's going to be an open round. You've had 7 rounds to figure out my tastes in music now, send me something I will absoultely love ;). Also, since this is the final, I'm going to be scoring out of 10 points instead of 6. Feel free to send now if you want to, but you can also wait until results are up for round 7.

Also, I'm not really sure how seneca was planning to post results, but I'm really curious to find out  ;D

WTF? :lol Please elaborate ::)

But I guess you were correct, just two hours early.

Shadow Ninja 2.0: The Album Leaf - Window
The very first chord totally reminds me of Sigur Ròs' Vardeldur, but the chord progression is slightly different. But in terms of overall feeling and sounds used those two songs are really similar. I liked it though, something nice and relaxing to put on before going to sleep. (Not recommended as a morning alarm, as it'd put me back to sleep straight away ;) )
4/6 points

adace: Lever du jour - Daybreak - Daphnis et Chloe by Ravel
This is the first of several classical pieces I got this round. Absolutely beautiful piece and daybreak seems like a perfect title. THe whole feeling of the song is like waking up to a wonderful, sunny day you're looking forward to and just loving it.
5/6 points

senecadawg2: Paradise - Sarah Fimm

Really nice, subtle pop song. She has a really soothing voice, the piano fits perfectly and the beats give it a bit necessary rhythm without ever calling attention to them. Great send!
4,5/6 points

lonestar: Yes - Turn Of The Century
I actually have 4 Yes albums at home, but I never really got around to listening anything besides Close To The Edge, so they didn't make the banned list. List is a pretty hit or miss band for me. When I'm in the right mood I really like their music, at other times I ask myself how anyone could ever seriousl listen to this and actually like it? Anyway, I quite liked this song, definetely a lot more than the epic song you sent me last round ;). Calm guitars, piano and some other instruments I can't quite out my finger on. Not a big fan of his voice, but the music makes up for it.
4/6 points

Lucien: Okami OST - Cave of Nagi (イザナギ窟)
I think this is a soundtrack for a film or a game, and I imagine it works fantastic in that context. Just as a piece of music it's just good, it creates an interesting atmosphere but despite it's short length far overstays it's welcome.
3/6 points

Sacul: Air - Johann Sebastian Bach

This is even more beautiful than the last classical piece I got from adace. It somehow manages to feel both sad and happy at the same time. Kinda reminds me of a walk through a beautiful emperial garden with a prince/princess at your side. I'm not sure any of this made sense, but this was amazing  :tup.
5,5/6 points

Tom Bombadil: Tenhi - Lauluni Sinulle
Um.. so this was supposed to be weird? I didn't quite find the weirdness, but it was awesome nevertheless. Kicks of with some really mellow and beautiful acoustic guitars, than drums kick in and everything gets a bit louder but still subdued. The vocals surprised me a bit, but they fit perfectly with the music and I'm all for pleasent surprises. I'm kinda torn between 5 and 6 points right now, so I'll just give you...
5,5/6 points.

Standings:
senecadawg2          34,5
Tom Bombadil          32
adace                      31,5
Sacul                       31
Lucien                      30,5
Shadow Ninja 2.0   29,5
lonestar                  28,5

While seneca has the lead by more than 2 points, from second to fifth rank it gets really close. And with a good song seneca can still be beaten ;). Remember the next round is rated out of 10 points, so it's easier to gain ground!

It still completely baffles me that I got a higher score with one of my own pieces than with the Swan Lake Finale.

Seriously, that's the biggest compliment I've ever received to my music, ever. That finale is one of my favorite pieces.

Glad you really liked the song! The weirdness for me is just the vocals being in Finnish.

Will send tonight.

 :lol

I was thinking about sending a certain piece of music but I'm frightened it won't score well at all.

This again will take some thought.

I'm sorry this round is taking so long, but since adace sent I've been out from 7a.m. till 9p.m. daily. I have saturday free, so you can expect results then. What I can say is that I got lots of great music this round, as I expected from the final  ;) :tup

So here we hace them, the long-awaited results for the final round! Just a quick reminder, I'll rate every song out of 10 now. Also I've decided that rating out of 10 is kind of pointless if a previous 2 equals a 6 now, so I give you a slightly revised rating system:
0 points - I never want to hear this song again.
1,5 points - I won’t mind this song if it’s in the background, but don’t really want to listen to it otherwise.
3 points- okay
5 points- liked it
7 points- really liked it
8,5 points- awesome song
10 points- perfect in every way possible

Shadow Ninja 2.0: Sonic Syndicate - Enclave
This was really cool, I loved the vocalists voice (despite being rather poppy in a rock way  ::) ) and the vocal melodies, especially the chorus. Not a big fan of the guitar tone though, sounds too much like noise for me, but the piano and drum sound even that out a bit. The piano in the background really added a lot to this song, pushing it up at least 2 points.
7,5/10

lonestar:  InnerShine with Always Late
This was a fantastic song. Despite it's 12 minute length it managed to keep me interested all the time. Really cool riffs all over the song and some stellar keyboard parts. The vocals are the weak point here, as they're "just" good. I will listen to this again, probably ;).
8/10

senecadawg2: David Gray - "Please Forgive Me"

I can definetely understand why this is your favourite artist! There's a nice contrast between the electronic and the acoustic parts, and they seem to blend together effortlessly at the same time. I especially like the guitars between the 2 and 4 minute mark, and the last 50 seconds or so. His voice has a very nice tone and lots of charisma, and I don't really mind that the melodies are pretty simple.
9/10

Sacul: Destiny Potato - Love Song
Fantastic song, really cool riffs and the female vocals fit really well with the heavy-ass guitars and drums. The quiet breakdown in the middle is fantastic as well. There's really not anything I can critizise about this song, except that it doesn't really sound like a love song :lol . Also, awesome band name :tup.
9/10

adace: If These Trees Could Talk - They Speak With Knives
This was a fantastic post rock song, with some great and slightly unsettling calmer sections and loud climaxes all over the place. Reminds me of Russian Circles a bit, but in a good way.
9/10

Tom Bombadil: Genesis- Can Utility and the Coastliners

I have never heard ths song before, despite your doubts ;). Of course I lnew Genesis existed but besides their hits I had never listened to them. This song is pretty good. It's really beautiful, but feels a bit too nice for the first minute and an half. It gets a lot better after that and really picks up! :tup
7,5/10

Lucien: The Enid-Tripping The Light Fantastic(1994)
Half an extra point for sending a song from the year I was born! The song itself was unlike anything I've ever heard before. Sure, it's obviously prog but it feels completely different than your average prog song, despite being similar in every other aspect. Well, except for the classical influences I guess :lol. This did everything it set out to do, and splendidly at that.
9/10

That makes the final results as follows:
senecadawg2          43,5
adace                      40,5
Sacul                       40
Tom Bombadil          39,5
Lucien                     39,5
Shadow Ninja 2.0   37
lonestar                  36,5

senecadawg2 wins my roulette 3 points ahead of adace, followed by Sacul! Congratulations!
I want to thank everyone who played, all of you introduced me to some great music and I will spend a lot of time checking out all the awesome artists I learned about during this Roulette!
I want to apologise again for the slow pace of this last round, but I think I kept the pace pretty reasonable apart from that. (I think I'm at exavtly one week per round). Thanks to you for sending (mostly  ::)) quick and not making all the poor people in the waiting list wait longer than necessary.
I'm done here, let the next roulette start!

Almost done
WTF? :lol Please elaborate ::)

How else can you explain the results   :D

I'm glad you enjoyed the song, I had a lot of fun playing in your roulette! I've never used so little metal in a roulette before and I'm glad to see it worked.

Aw shucks... You taught me how.  :blush

Also, awesome band name :tup .
Finally somebody that doesn't think it sucks :lol . Their debut Lun is really solid, so there you have more songs like that. Best new band of the year.

It was a cool roulette overall, and I don't mind about the delay on this round, we all have lives outside the forum, and it being your priority can't be criticized. Enjoy your new music  :tup .
